Bdubs Builds #1

For season 10, Bdubs has been sculpting some picturesque landscapes, but XB recently hired him to build a garden in his Guardian Temple base. When talking about builds people usually break them down into three parts: landscaping, exterior, and interior. This challenge is more of a hybrid; An interior, but instead of making chairs and cupboards, its dealing with plants and landscaping.

Down the first hall, Bdubs frames a bonsai-like tree before a small window. The shape is so distinct on this tree: Bdubs used lots of signs and fences to bend the branches just so and the leaves are in three clumps (but two are connected on the backside so it doesn't feel bare). The wall of bamboo adds detail without being distracting. The path is so good: a broken stone path that transitions to path beneath the tree, the grass and moss build up along the edges where people wouldn't be walking. The use of pots, flower pots, and similarly colored blocks to create larger pot variations is very fun. I love when builders don't just make smaller variants of a thing (boxes, barrels, trees, etc) but also make a BIG fella.

So, originally, XB had thick pillars holding the water elevator and I liked the design of these pillars! But I understand why Bdubs pulled those out and went with a slimmer approach; This freed up more room and the pools of water complement the surrounding garden.

To section off the garden, Bdubs put in an unobtrusive wrought iron fence. This makes a clear break between the reast of the building and the garden without distracting from the garden. Leaves crawling up the pillars and growing from the ceiling are always great. Bdubs tucks in various details like the vines and propagules. I'm not totally sold on the bush using the propagule to simulate a stem? But I can see the potential. The use of buttons on the lamp is neat, I think, because it makes the shape reminiscent of Guardians' spikes.

LOVE that Bdubs incorporated some Guardian iconography into his design. The brick/granite/weathered copper colored are nice because they contrast with all the greens/teals, but are more subdued than bright oranges would, letting the greenery remain center stage.

First of all, for the next hallway, including a doghouse for Bishop is such a kind gesture to XB (irl his dog Bishop recently passed away).

I wasn't sure what the item frames on the pots were meant to be until Bdubs explained it was meant to be like adding a design to the pot. I can see the merit! from straight on, I can buy into the illusion of the green and tan being painted on. But from the side, the item frame and item extruding kinda breaks that illusion for me. Perhaps it'd work best placed against a back wall, like the pots lined up back there. Speaking of which: I love the value variations and subtle shape variety Bdubs created by putting the minecraft pots next to his own custom pots. The various types of shelving holding the small potted plants are also so good; They really sell the idea of the space for me.

jokes (does she like to joke around)- i mean… let’s not forget the fact that she calls you ‘bro’ on daily basis…. minji is secretly a part time comedian, although she takes 80% of her jokes seriously

love (what’s her love language)- minji strikes me as a person who’d enjoy building legos sooo 🤭 (not the flowers, the flowers are lame) YALL CAN DEFFO BUILD THE BONSAI TREE TOGETHER

memory (what’s her favourite memory together)- when you first came to the newjeans dorm and you beat hanni at mario kart because she was whining about how clingy the two of you were 👁️ (to this day hanni holds a grudge because of that)

rush (does she rush into things)- i mean… first thing she did asking you out was placing her minecraft bed next to yours, i’d say that’s moving fast…

secrets (how open is she with you)- she tells you NOTHING about comebacks, but overall, she’s pretty open? i feel like minji wouldn’t share everything from the begging of your relationship, but she willingly talks about things if you ask her about them

time (how long did it take for her to confess)- how long does creating a new server in minecraft, forcing you there with her, building you two a cute lil home and finishing it by dramatically placing her bed next to yours take? because that’s how she confessed 🫡

upset (what’s her reaction when you’re upset)- she’s a bit confused, why are you sad? if she’s the cause, my girl goes out of her way to earn your forgiveness :(( she ain’t the cause? minji will beat up the actual cause of your sadness (yes, even if it’s a jar you couldn’t open)

visibility (is she afraid of the public opinion)- kinda? minji wouldn’t be the one to propose coming out to public, but if you really wanted that, she would make sure you’re protected and stay away from all the potential hate the two of you could be getting

warrior (how often do you fight)- actually, small fights with minji happen a couple times a month. it’s usually nothing big, just about how she didn’t wake you up before she left for practice etc. most of those banters get resolved with a kiss mwah 🫢

x-ray (is she able to read you)- y e s; she squints her eyes as if she needed glasses, uses her magical superpower (she makes you laugh by looking silly with her eyes squinted) and checks if something is wrong 🫦

yes (how would she propose to you)- now very important, i think minji doesn’t really like change. for now, it’s cool as it is! maybe in the future one of you could propose, but for now? minji’d rather stay as girlfriends

About Me

Hello there! I'm Drakmanka, an Asexual, Genderfluid/Non-Binary, plural Dragonkin. I use They/Them pronouns and often refer to myself as "This Dragon".

Current age: 31 years.

Though I am host of a plural system, this blog will predominantly or possibly exclusively be run by me, Drakmanka. My headmates prefer more private settings in which to front and share their thoughts.

My alterhuman identities (that I am confident about) are as follows, in order of importance to me: Dragon, dinosaur, raven, Tigger, demigod (of some sort, still figuring that one out), and elf. I am also questioning a ghoul 'type. I identify as both Therian and Otherkin.

I am also cat-hearted, rat-hearted, horse-hearted, and ent-hearted.

My plural system is primarily comprised of fictive walk-ins, but a few of my OCs have also shown up (this actually makes writing about them really hard with someone actively critiquing my portrayal of them).

While wearing my Human Costume(TM) I drive a school bus and make cat noises at my coworkers (some of whom do it back!). In my free time I enjoy chatting online with fellow alterhumans, working on one of my original stories, drawing (mostly dragons), reading, playing video games, and building LEGO sets and MOCs.

I have two cats: Layden my heart-cat; a grey tuxedo rescue who's been with me for over 10 years, and Jasmine the family cat; a flame-point Siamese who was rehomed to us last year when her original owner had to move to a retirement home.

I also have pet rats: I recently lost my dear fuzz-butt Frodo to cancer, but his cage-mate Samwise is still doing well even at the advanced age of 2.5 years. I've been keeping rats for nearly 17 years now.

And lastly on the pets front, I keep a tropical freshwater aquarium. It's a 29-gallon community tank. Ask about fish names if you're curious!

Some of my favorite titles and franchises of various media (in no particular order) are: Bionicle, Lord of the Rings (especially the books!), Minecraft, Dishonored, Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, D&D5e, Girl Genius, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Stargate SG1, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dragonriders of Pern, Super Mario Bros, Spyro (the Dragon/Legend of), Calvin and Hobbes, TES Skyrim, The Age of Fire, and Wings of Fire.

Some of my non-media-related interests are: Zoology, Paleontology, Meteorology, electronics, horticulture, auto mechanics, Astronomy, forestry, and Geology.

I also enjoy training my pets, practicing music (I play piano as well as ocarina, and am trying to get good at guitar), language study (I am low-level conversational in Spanish, am attempting to learn Thai, and want to learn German, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian someday), and I'm trying to raise a bonsai tree from seed but keep losing my seedlings.

I collect rocks, rubber duckies, and suffer from an affliction known as bibliophilia which has rendered my bookshelves utterly stuffed. I have a plushie collection that takes up a little over half my bed. I'm also addicted to music.

I enjoy most forms of music except jazz, rap, and blues. My favorite music genres are Alternative, Rock, Metal, World, and Ambient Music.

I live with my Found Family whom I affectionately refer to as my sister, my gramma, and Sensei/grampa.

I am adopted, which definitely makes the way I define family looser than some.

My adoptive mom, I refer to as just my mom, and same with my adoptive dad. I have an adoptive older sister who amusingly is almost the same age as my chosen sister. I have two biological half-sisters, whom I generally refer to as my bio-sisters. I refer to my biological mother as my birth mom, and my biological father as my father. I have never met either of them but I have met my bio-sisters.

I also have step-family: my dad divorced my mom many years ago now (amicably) and she remarried when I was 18. My step-dad is a pretty nice guy, and I also have a step-brother and step-sister (my step-sister is also, amusingly, almost the exact same age as my adoptive sister and chosen sister).

My family situation is a bit of a tangled mess to explain but it all makes perfect sense to me!

When I refer to "my family" I am almost always referring to my Found Family. I don't expect I will make such references often though.

Check it out everyone, 3 years of art progress! And I wrote a guide for beginners! 😊

Hi! I’m Laura, age 31. I’ve always drawn occasionally, but never really stuck with it. Frankly it stressed me out. I’d draw for a month, then cry a bunch, then quit for a couple more years. But this time I turned it into a habit somehow. I’ve been drawing near-daily since Feb ‘21 and my life is better for it. Art’s a huge part of me now; it affects how I spend my time, how I express myself, and how I see the world. I feel like a happier, more complete human being.

So here’s what worked for me. This is a guide for hobbyists (I don’t have commercial ambitions) and it may or may not work for you. But I hope you can learn something from it regardless. Without further ado, my thesis:

 ~ Laura’s Steps for Drawing A Lot and Hopefully Getting Better ~

 1 – Manage Your Health 

Know what’s bad for your art? Depression! Glad I got around to treating mine. But for real, if you lack self-confidence you might want to check your mental health. It isn’t the sole factor but it can rapidly overtake the others. Every day I see a post like “how do I improve, every time I try to draw I’m overwhelmed with thoughts I’m bad at everything and a burden to the people around me”. That’s relatable but not a healthy way to see yourself. Low self-esteem can be treated. Please consider talking to someone - you’re a wonderful, lovable person and deserve a happy life.

Also, try to get plenty of sleep and eat regular meals; it helps with everything. Exercise is worth a shot too. Going for walks is good for your mind and body. Yes it’s boring, but boredom gives you space to imagine things.

 #2 – Make It Fun

You’re taking this too seriously. Yes, you. It’s just a hobby. Take the pressure off. Have fun.

What does that mean? It means you need to make art approachable. It has to be a comfort hobby you’re naturally drawn to. That means killing all thoughts of what you SHOULD do. If it makes you want to draw, go for it. Anime characters? Pretty ladies? Fanart? Furries? Doodles from imagination? Zentangles? Pencils? Digital? Do it. If drawing the “right way” burns you out, draw things the wrong way instead. You know who draws a lot? Children. You know who doesn’t draw super well? Children. Have that mindset. Draw like a child. Don’t compare yourself to others; just enjoy the process of creating something. You had that ability once and I know you can reacquire it.

 Intimidated by an empty sketchbook? Don’t wanna ruin a white page? That’s OK; find something you don’t mind ruining. Grab a half-used notebook and a ballpoint pen. You EXPECT those to look horrendous. If you can have fun filling that notebook, you can have fun drawing regularly, and if you draw regularly you can slowly improve your art. It happened to me. I went from rarely drawing to wanting to do it every day. I still sketch in ballpoint now; it’s fun and comfortable.

Also, if drawing’s NOT fun? That’s OK too! There’s loads of ways to express creativity; go do do one of those. For me it was The Sims 3, then knitting, then drawing. Find something accessible and build your confidence up. The world needs bonsai trees and Minecraft castles just as much as drawings. <3

#3 – Seek Instruction

You’ve made drawing a habit, congratulations! You’ve probably learned heaps already; it’s natural to work out techniques as you go. But deducing art wisdom from scratch isn’t super efficient. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel when you can learn so much from others.

You can do a paid course (great way to meet people), but you don’t have to. All the information’s free on the internet! Teachers will cover the same things in different ways or from different perspectives. There’s no exclusive knowledge; the more you study, the more overlap you’ll notice. It all comes together for a more complete understanding of fundamental concepts.

Here’s some of my favourite resources (currently all available free online)(except the Winslow one which was taken down, boo):

  r/artfundamentals, ie. drawabox.com . A great starter course on how to hold a pen, draw lines, build forms and so on. You can follow structured lessons or just practice whatever you need to.

How to Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, by Scott Robertson. This book’s the gold standard on perspective and great for technical thinkers. It gets VERY advanced but there’s basic stuff to learn from as well. If the textbook intimidates you, try this excellent video playlist by Dan Beardshaw. He walks you through the same concepts in a simple approachable manner. Vital information if you want your work to look 3D.

anything by Andrew Loomis. He’s an icon for a reason; the Loomis head is a standard art tool to this day. I also enjoy the anachronistic career advice (“all advertisers will pay for a well-drawn head” or whatever it was). Here’s the ones I’ve read and enjoyed:

Classic Human Anatomy in Motion, by Valerie L. Winslow. Hot take – people who say “learn anatomy” to beginners are idiots. SO MANY fundamentals come before anatomy if you wanna draw good-looking characters. You’ll get better results studying proportion, form, gesture, shapes and composition first. But if/when you want to learn bones and muscles, this is the book for you! It’s probably overkill, but I loved the breakdown of facial muscles and how they create expression. Top-tier reaction image material.

Proko!! Fabulous Youtube channel. Not only is Stan a great teacher, he invites on other artists too. Just go to his search bar and plug in a keyword; you’ll always find something helpful. I recommend his channel if you want to draw humans (loads of gesture, forms, proportion, anatomy etc.), but there’s a video or two on everything. Some of my other favourite videos:

Mind-Blowing Realistic Shading Tricks. Simple effective intro to light and shadow, I still go back and learn from it.

How to Draw Dynamic Shapes – FORCE Series Part 3. So compelling I bought the book afterwards. Blew my mind, instantly improved all my shapes and in turn my composition and gesture.

Painting Skin Tones and How Light Affects Color. Marco Bucci’s a genius with colours, he explains value and saturation in such fascinating ways.

Digital Shape Carving with Scott Flanders – good companion to the shading video above, teaches dramatic silhouettes and cel-shading within a really interesting workflow.

Google. Any question. Throw it in. Someone’s made a video or reddit post about it. You’d be surprised! I swear, the number of times I’ve typed “composition tips” or “digital watercolour clip studio paint” or “how draw horse head”.

Remember, take it easy. Don’t burn yourself out. Back off if you feel the tears creeping in. Study should supplement your drawings, not replace them. If in doubt, revert to step 2 – “bad” art is better than no art.

4– Study Life

If you did step 3 you’re way ahead of me on this one. USE REFERENCES. Draw things from photos (or real life if possible). Fill your brain with visual information. Here’s a thread I made for sharing references of humans.

What if you prefer to draw from imagination? That’s fine – try a hybrid approach. Doodle whatever comes to you, then look up references and try again. For example I’ll doodle a bear, then draw from photos of bears, then doodle new bears using the things I learned. It’s fun and also a good way to test your knowledge. You may also enjoy combining different references; eg drawing animal fusions, combining poses with an outfits etc. It gets easier to do the more you practice.

Between art pieces I keep a balance between drawing from imagination, drawing from reference, following art lessons, and studying other artists. Speaking of which –

5 – Study Art

Ever heard “Don’t draw anime until you’ve learned anatomy?” or “Learn the rules before you break them?” I strongly disagree with both of those statements. Fundamentals are great but there’s never a point you stop learning them, and studying life won’t teach you how to stylise. That’s why you also need to learn from your favourite artworks. This gets easier/more efficient as you build your broader art skills, but you can learn styles at any point of your art journey (see – step 2). In fact, it makes study more enjoyable, since stylised art can look better and feel more “you”. You already know what you want to create– why not start now?

Let’s take anime as an example. That’s a huge genre with loads of variation. So, what’s your personal taste? Round and cute, or sharp and serious? Choose your favourite shows and study how they do it. Observe their lines, shapes and proportions. Then try it yourself. Make fanart. Not only is replication good art practice in general, it’ll teach you a bunch of new tricks. For original work, pull from loads of sources, the more diverse the better. Work in your love for Silver Age comics or medieval tapestries or German expressionism. The more places you learn from, the more unique and personal your style will be. Your art becomes a visual scrapbook of all the artists you love. I think that’s beautiful. <3

 6 – Find Community

Art friends! Best thing ever. You can bond over your shared obsession, commiserate over tough parts, and learn about art together. A lot of my drawings are in-jokes exchanged with my BFF. I’ve known them from childhood (lucky) but apparently adults can make friends too. Fandom spaces are great for this; many Discord channels have a dedicated artists’ zone. You can also try r/sketchdaily or challenges like Mermay/Inktober if you want a sense of community.

If you don’t have art friends (yet), that’s OK; parasocial works too! I like watching “Draw With Me” content on Youtube. It’s great to put on while you’re creating, especially when you don’t have the energy for something educational. Not only is it inspiring, you can learn tips and tricks along the way. And of course, you can never go wrong with Bob Ross.

 7 – Be Interesting

The very first step was to manage your health. In a way, we’ve looped back to the beginning.  Because no matter what you do, art begins and ends with who you are. You can practice fundamentals 12 hours a day but if you never live your life, you’ll never make interesting art. No one cares for artists whose only character trait is how hard they grind. So go be the most vibrant version of yourself. Take up weird hobbies. Make weird friends. Seek new experiences. Question the beliefs you grew up with. Read books for a while instead of drawing. Develop your principles. Embrace what makes you different. Survive the worst year of your life somehow. Learn what makes you thrive. Your art won’t be for everyone. But it WILL mean the world to some. And to me, that’s the whole point of doing this. Good luck, fellow artist. The world is your adventure yet to come. I believe in you. <3

Commission info

So basically, I'm opening commissions to raise money to take my children to the zoo this summer before school starts back up again... so I figured I would lay some ground rules first.

Under cut to shorten post

Rule 1: No NSFW 🔞. The closest I can get to is seduction, but that's it. And it's not that I can't... just that I'm old (by internet standards), and I get enough of that with my boyfriend/husband on the regular... so no.

Rule 2: Nothing Political. I read enough about what is going on and all... I'm tired of it.

Rule 3: No Heckling to lower the price. I believe my prices are far for the art I do, even though I've never done commissions before... I'm not the best artist when it comes to most media, and I'm a little out of practice for drawing anything other than my minecraft ocs... I'm not the worst artist out there, but I have to be honest as there are much better artists out there with better skills than me...

Rule 4: Art takes time. Anything I offer in my commissions will take time to do, I have work and children to tend to... so please be patient with me. I will, however, work as fast as I can humanly possible to get your commissions sent to you...

Rule 5: I've got the shipping and handling cost. The Drawings and Digital Art are free to send, but most of the other things will cost to send... you shouldn't have to pay extra for your commission to be sent to you, especially when you paid for it with your saved up money/spare money...

Rule 6: it doesn't have to just be Minecraft related. It's your commissions. You should be free to have something you really want... After all, it's your money you're spending~

Rule 7: Please don't spend what you don't have... If you have anything that's more important to pay for right now, such as bills or a needed expense paid off, please don't. I'm not asking for commissions to pay for bills as I as I can take care of that myself... I just wanted to make some extra money to go towards a vacation trip for a single day at the zoo with my girls and husband... I don't want you to get in the hole because you felt like you had to buy something from me... bills come first! (Also, my husband and I are tucking back a little money from our paychecks to add to the funds. The tickets at the moment are $150 for all four of us to go... the extra money is for food and gasoline)

With that out of the way, now on to the price of the commissions~

Again, drawing characters Is a little easier for me especially when I am drawing on paper Digital artwork however is a little bit more of a task for me As I have to draw it out first and then put it in a digital program too finish Drawing it digitally. That is why the price for the digital is doubled as you will also receive a copy of the sketch with the digital drawing... The colors are a little easy. backgrounds are a lot tougher, but I left them at the same price as it wouldn't be fair to charge one more because it's more difficult ( at least to me anyway... I'm sure a lot of you would disagree on that... 😅)

And just in case you wanted more than 5 characters in your picture, there is an additional $1.50 per character....

Wire trees are different medium that I learned from my father to do for a while back, He was being a bit of a behind about teaching me because he believed that was his thing but I think he was actually joking so I might be able to do some plus I can add a spun twist with the pipe cleaner leaves... And no, they're not the little bonsai trees. These are different types of wire trees... But I plan to make more than just the one kind my father makes.... This is also the reason I stated I would pay shipping and handling as it comes with a big old rock for the tree to sit on... That thing alone will bring the price up to ship it 🫠

I want you to be satisfied with the work I do, not to be upset over what you think might be a shotty work of your request.

my favorite modpack for minecraft includes many different types of fantasy soil, each tier increasing the speed at which my bonsai trees grow. every tier is progressively harder to make, requiring more advanced machinery. the final tier is capable of growing little bonsai trees at 10x speed
