i have not watched content smp so i dont know what the vibes are but the main mcyt series we've watched and enjoyed over the years are these ones:

hermitcraft: ten seasons. eleven years. pg. all up on youtube. very laid back and silly but also has a specific brand of insanity you cannot get anywhere else. it looks intimidating from the outside but due to it not having a definitive storyline you can start watching anyone at any time and pick up on things pretty quickly. some of our favorite Hermits include iskall85, xisumavoid, and mumbo jumbo! empires smp: two seasons. three years. pg. all up on youtube. there's more of a focus on lore and roleplay (especially s1) if you're into that, but the server is also full of amazing builders who build amazing things! naturally i recommend pixlriffs for both seasons (s1, s2) because i am insane about that poor little cubito but his s1 pov cuts off early and fwhip has a much more involved viewpoint of the series in both seasons (s1, s2).

speaking of pixlriffs, he has a metric fuck ton of solo series he made up on his YouTube that are amazing. i especially enjoy his one block at a time (minecraft april fools 2022 update) series and his chicken skyblock series with zloyxp! hes very calm and very relaxing but also immensely funny. riffs :)

mianite: two seasons, one spinoff, one technically unrelated series that gets referenced a lot anyways, around 3 years long (?????), not pg, all up on youtube. predecessor to a lot of modern day mcrp (minecraft roleplay) series. i am currently losing it over this one. people usually balk at the series length + relatively unaccessible entry point that kinda comes with its format, but people have made some very good posts about how to solve those problems (will add them later because i cant fucking find them and im tired. @ the 7 other people in this fandom u know what im talking about pls help). would not reccomend starting with this one because it probably wouldnt be worth it. theres themes there tho if you're into those

so the good news is: there are a lot of things you can do in these circumstances to make the game easier/better for you! the new update of vault hunters has a guide book that’ll take you through everything you need to know, so don’t worry about not knowing much yet and make sure to read it as you go. but as for “I don’t have much time” and “I’m not good enough at PvE”, there are some game rules that help! the difficulty is pretty customizable!

I go into detail on the game rules you can change to make the game easier to play below under the readmore but I say go for it! I’m pretty bad at minecraft too, and I figured it out! you’ll have fun!

world type

there are two options; this is set when you create the world. in the world creation menu, where you would select between a normal and a super flat world, there should be an additional world type option called sky vaults. if you’d prefer to play skyblock to vanilla, set the game to this. in sky vaults, you will have a special budding crystal block that created raw vault crystals. these crystals lead you into raw vaults, in which you can venture to get various materials you would otherwise be unable to get in a skyblock. unlike regular vaults, they don’t give you vault experience, they always have beginner’s grace, and you can’t find most vault materials in them (instead finding things like ore mines). this mode has special sections in the guidebook if you play it. iskall, however, is playing a regular world, I just thought “skyblock is an option” is probably important in the vault hunters difficulty explainer!

additionally, before we get into the vault-specific game rules, remember that minecraft game rules still work! just remember the world difficulty is for the overworld, not the vault. you can set the vault difficulty with the command I show below, but this allows for you to, say, have the vaults be on easy but the overworld be on hard if you want. additionally, keepInventory tends to be kind of buggy in the vaults. use one of the vaultMode commands instead if you want to make sure it will actually work!

/gamerule vaultMode [mode]

this has three options. it is set on a global basis in multiplayer. this affects what happens when you die in a vault.

NORMAL means that when you die in the vault, you will leave behind a spirit, which can be revived using the spirit extractor to regain items you’ve lost. this gets expensive quickly, so it’s generally best not to die. (this is the default.)

CASUAL means that when you die in the vault, you return to your spawn with all the things you had on you, but take a durability hit. it’s as though you had put afterlife on every crystal, or as though you had beginner’s grace for every vault, even after level 20.

HARDCORE means that when you die in the vault, you can’t get your things back, and must start from scratch with backup gear. this mode works like old vault hunters.

/the_vault difficulty [difficulty] OR /the_vault local_difficulty [username] [difficulty]

this has five options. it can be set on a per-player basis in multiplayer. this changes how hard the mobs hit. in singleplayer, this can be changed in the menu the same way the Minecraft world difficulty can be.

EASY is 0.5x hp/dmg

NORMAL 0.75x (this is the default.)

HARD 1x

IMPOSSIBLE 2x

FRAGGED 4x dmg 2x hp

/gameRule vaultCrystalMode [mode]

this has four options. this is set on a global basis on multiplayer servers. this changes how hard it is to get vault crystal materials by changing how fast the amounts you need scales.

NORMAL is 1x material scaling (this is the default.)

GRINDY is 2x material scaling

EXTREME is 3x material scaling

INFINITY is 0x ingredient scaling - in other words, this is a mode that allows you to infinitely do vaults without having to fill out materials in the vault altar. this is if you really enjoy vaults, but don’t like the part of the loop for building farms and collecting overworld materials!

/gameRule vaultLoot [mode]

there are three options. this is set globally on multiplayer. this changes the amount of loot (and exp) you will get inside of the vault. this lets you progress much faster and with less required grinding, but may occasionally mess with the pack balance.

I was on Tumblr hiatus throughout most of 2021 and 2022, so y'all didn't get to see me liveblog Double Life and Limited Life (I'll have to dig up the doodles I posted on other platforms... I also did a ton of Naked and Scared and Skyblock doodles because... Imp and Skizz my beloveds <3), but I plan to reblog stuff to this blog too.

I've also got a shiny new Life fan series 'fic ready to go. It's called Dog's Life and it'll update Tuesdays. Is this the dawn of a new era where I actually post short chapters?? idk

At the moment I'm just planning the one 'fic since I don't have a lot of plans to mess with the world itself and all I really want to do is a character analysis 'fic about arranged marriages and consensual murder, but I'd love to write one nice 'fic for all my fandoms before I retire from 'fic writing someday, so here we go!

so i had a lot of trouble running the 1.16 modpack but i haven't had much issue with 1.18 and sky vaults. on my computer that often dislikes running modpacks (that time i played a create server with some friends and got exactly six frames in my base), it's running pretty smoothly - about as well as standard minecraft, i think. additionally, due to being skyblock, it doesn't have to load as many chunks, so that may make it run better! to play it, download vault hunters from curseforge using your launcher of choice (easiest if you're unfamiliar will be curseforge, i'm using prism launcher atm, which is a fork of multimc). when you create a new world, hit "more options", and then go to the world type and click through until you see the sky vaults option. you'll be good to go then!

No one believes me, this happened back in like 2014-2015, I tried telling a couple people, but obviously given how far-fetched it is no one would believe it, I dont even have proof, I didn't think to take a screenshot or picture but yeah

I was playing a lot of sky block at the time in Minecraft, lots of sky block, I got on so many servers just to start a new island over and over, I don't remember which server it was on, but im inclined to believe it was Lemoncloud, I had made much bigger strides on my island than normal, I had a lot of space of cobblestone slabs spread about, and was working on a pretty big cactus farm I'd seen on another island when it happened

I was stunned and tried to talk to him, but just as sporadically as he joined, he left. I checked Tab and he was no-where to be found (it showed all the players on the server) and I immediately went to the global chat where I was promptly laughed off.
