PLI scheme for Pharma, drones and textiles to be modified by govt

New Delhi:Â The government is planning to make adjustments to the production-linked incentive PLI scheme for pharmaceuticals, drones, and textile sectors. According to an official statement, these modifications are intended to stimulate investment and bolster manufacturing. An official source has stated that these sectors were chosen on the basis of their performance under the existing scheme for various products.
Higher disbursement scheme for PLI scheme
The official said, âDisbursement of production-linked incentives (PLI) for white goods (AC and LED lights) would start this month and that would push the amount of disbursement, which was only Rs 2,900 crore till March 2023.â
After the identification of sectors, a combined note for approval from the Union Cabinet will be sent. The change in disbursement includes an extension of time for Pharma sectors, and addition of products in some sectors. Within the textile industry, there is a proposal to expand the scope of particular products within the technical textiles category, while in the drone sector, there is a plan to raise the incentive amount.

"The Netherlands is pulling even further ahead of its peers in the shift to a recycling-driven circular economy, new data shows.
According to the European Commissionâs statistics office, 27.5% of the material resources used in the country come from recycled waste.
For context, Belgium is a distant second, with a âcircularity rateâ of 22.2%, while the EU average is 11.5% â a mere 0.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
âWe are a frontrunner, but we have a very long way to go still, and weâre fully aware of that,â Martijn Tak, a policy advisor in the Dutch ministry of infrastructure and water management, tells The Progress Playbook.Â
The Netherlands aims to halve the use of primary abiotic raw materials by 2030 and run the economy entirely on recycled materials by 2050. Amsterdam, a pioneer of the âdoughnut economicsâ concept, is behind much of the progress.
Why it matters
The world produces some 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste each year, and this could rise to 3.4 billion tonnes annually by 2050, according to the World Bank.
Landfills are already a major contributor to planet-heating greenhouse gases, and discarded trash takes a heavy toll on both biodiversity and human health.
âA circular economy is not the goal itself,â Tak says. âItâs a solution for societal issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental pollution, and resource-security for the country.â
A fresh approach
While the Netherlands initially focused primarily on waste management, âwe realised years ago thatâs not good enough for a circular economy.â
In 2017, the state signed a âraw materials agreementâ with municipalities, manufacturers, trade unions and environmental organisations to collaborate more closely on circular economy projects.
It followed that up with a national implementation programme, and in early 2023, published a roadmap to 2030, which includes specific targets for product groups like furniture and textiles. An English version was produced so that policymakers in other markets could learn from the Netherlandsâ experiences, Tak says.
The programme is focused on reducing the volume of materials used throughout the economy partly by enhancing efficiencies, substituting raw materials for bio-based and recycled ones, extending the lifetimes of products wherever possible, and recycling.
It also aims to factor environmental damage into product prices, require a certain percentage of second-hand materials in the manufacturing process, and promote design methods that extend the lifetimes of products by making them easier to repair.
Thereâs also an element of subsidisation, including funding for âcircular craft centres and repair cafĂ©sâ.
This idea is already in play. In Amsterdam, a repair centre run by refugees, and backed by the city and outdoor clothing brand Patagonia, is helping big brands breathe new life into old clothes.
Meanwhile, government ministries aim to aid progress by prioritising the procurement of recycled or recyclable electrical equipment and construction materials, for instance.
State support is critical to levelling the playing field, analysts say...
Long Road Ahead
The government also wants manufacturers â including clothing and beverages companies â to take full responsibility for products discarded by consumers.
âProducer responsibility for textiles is already in place, but itâs work in progress to fully implement it,â Tak says.
And the household waste collection process remains a challenge considering that small city apartments arenât conducive to having multiple bins, and sparsely populated rural areas are tougher to service.
âGetting the collection system right is a challenge, but again, itâs work in progress.â
...Nevertheless, Tak says wealthy countries should be leading the way towards a fully circular economy as theyâre historically the biggest consumers of natural resources."

The Marauders Era Historical Resource Guide Part 1: Pre-1960 to 1970
So, to start with, let's take a look at what came before the Marauders, at some of what their parents experienced because this will influence how they raise their children.
Cokeworth, being Muggle, is the easiest to cover. Cokeworth probably experienced a population boom in the Victorian era for either one of two reasons (possibly both reasons!): the "coke" in cokeworth refers to a byproduct of coal that was very important in the Victorian era as a source of fuel for coal-burning stoves and furnaces. We know Cokeworth is in the Midlands, and coal mining was a big industry in the Black Country, so Cokeworth could have coal mines. The name "Spinner's End" implies that there might also have been a textile mill there as well. The textile industry was huge in the Victorian era. Conditions for either job were, needless to say, brutal. To get an idea of what Severus's grandparents and great-grandparents lives might have been like in Cokeworth, I recommend checking out 24 Hours in the Past on YouTube: 24 hours in the Victorian era - YouTube (only the first 8 videos in the playlist)
If the Snape family are native to the area, they probably worked in either one of these two industries (or both!). Other options would be the service industry, which was very large up until the 1940s (to get an idea of what life was like for servants, I'd recommend reading the biography Below Stairs by Margaret Powell). Even a middle class family had a servant or two, but by 1960 this was a thing of the past. Only the wealthy had servants, though Eileen might have taken on work as a charwoman (cleaning lady).
Or there was workhouse. The Victorian workhouse of Oliver Twist was still very much a thing until 1948 when the NHS was formed. Now, granted, by the 1930s it wasn't quite the Dicksonian terror it had once been (though it still was not what I call great), but Tobias could have very well ended up in a workhouse during his childhood. If he was illegitimate, he might have been born in one. To get an idea of what the workhouse was like during the 1900s, I'd recommend reading about Charlie Chaplin's early life. Yep, that Charlie Chaplin, famous actor of the silent screen spent a portion of his childhood in a workhouse.
The house in Spinner's End does seem to be from this era as well. This meant that it would have been built with no running water and either gas lamps or lit by candles. The government started to refurbish these old houses with running water and electricity by the late 1960s, which meant that for much of Severus's early life he would not have had access to running water or electricity, maybe even as far as 9 years old. He would have had to pump water by hand at the neighborhood pump.

With this he and his family would do laundry, fill a bathtub, wash dishes, and cook with. There would have been an outhouse, probably one he would have shared with his neighbors. Here's a picture of an ex-council house outhouse from the 1950s:
Lily's family, in contrast, has either middle class or lower middle class roots. The Evanses are probably either highly skilled blue collar workers (electricians, chefs, land surveyors, nurses, etc) or are white-collar but are not extremely high paying like doctor or lawyer (such as teachers, secretaries, middle managers). However even the Evanses would have experienced deprivation due to wartime rationing, which only ended 4 years before the characters were born. Mrs. Evans was likely a homemaker. Most likely, her house was built with running water and electricity in the 1930s-1960s.
Remus's mother was a Muggle, and his father Lyall was a civil servant who worked for the Ministry. Lyall's anti-werewolf comments led to Greyback retaliating and biting Remus. From this we can infer two things: that Lyall was important enough that the Daily Prophet recorded his statement (Greyback had to have found out what he said somehow, and I don't think he was hanging around the Ministry water cooler listening to gossip), and that this means the Lupins were probably middle to upper-middle class. (Adult Lupin is poor because he can't get a job due to his condition, child Lupin, however, was not poor and considering how everyone's parents are dead in these books, safe to say his parents died at some point prior to PoA)
Lily probably would have grown up with a television, though probably not a color tv (my mother didn't get a color tv until high school, the mid 1970s, and she was shocked to realize The Wizard of Oz, which was periodically played on tv, was actually in color). Severus probably wouldn't have gotten a tv until after he started Hogwarts. By this time a basic black-and-white television would have cost ÂŁ70 (about ÂŁ940 today). In contrast, a color tv would have been much more expensive. Remus might not have had a television at all, if his mother had fully integrated into the wizarding world. He might have had a telephone though, so that his mother could keep in touch with her family. Lily most definitely would have had one. Severus might not have. If anyone in his family needed to make a phone call, they might have gone to a neighbor or pub. If there was an emergency, Lily or Severus might have used an honest-to-gods police box (its not just for time travel). These would have been phased out in the 1970s, during their school years.
Children would have been free range. Even for someone like Lily who grew up in a loving home with good parents would have been expected at as young as five or six to go to the store by herself with money her parents gave her and spend the rest of the day roaming the streets and playing with Severus and other neighborhood kids. You might be thinking, wasn't that dangerous? Yep, Diana Tift was abducted and murdered in 1965 at the age of five when she was walking home alone from her grandmother's house. That's just what they did back then. Lily might even have been expected to pick up cigarettes or liquor for her parents at such a young age. Her parents most likely would have smoked, so would Severus's, and they themselves would have probably picked up the habit. It was much more socially acceptable back then, even for teens. So was child abuse. People might not personally approve if they saw Tobias Snape beating his son, but few would intervene. They would say, "how he disciplines his family is his business."
Corporal punishment was permitted in schools until 1986. Caning was the preferred method, sometimes on the bare bottom and in front of the rest of the school, and hard enough to make them bleed. Girls were not exempt from this. Girls might be more often to get beat on the hands if the school was co-ed, but if it was an all-girls school then they were probably canned bare bottomed as well. Here is a series of school articles from 1976 about it: Caning and strapping of girls and boys in UK schools, January 1976 - CORPUN ARCHIVE uksc7601 Severus, if he did not experience caning himself, would have seen it done. Lily might have gone to a girls' school and experienced it herself, or seen it done, or else be hit on the hands. Since Remus's family seems to be fully integrated into the WW, he probably didn't experience this since he most likely didn't attend school at all. To get a better idea of the sort of school Severus might have gone to, here is a tv news report from 1969 about a school serving an impoverished, rought neighborhood in Sheffield: British Education in the 1960s | It's a battle ground | Education | 1960s | Report | 1969 - YouTube To learn more about the sort of school Lily might have gone to, you might want to check out The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark.
A film that's set in an East London British school from 1967 is To Sir, with Love starring Sidney Poitier. You know those cheesy movies from the 80s and 90s about a white teacher going to an inner city school? This movie the exact opposite, where an African-American teacher goes to a run down British school to teach white kids how to read. It stars Sidney Poitier, one of the best actors of all time.
All three (yes, even probably Remus) would have been aware of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear annihilation. The UK was an ally to the US during the war. Britain occupied a part of Germany after WW2, they were involved in spying and in combat in Korea. It was Winston Churchill that coined the phrase "Iron Curtain." There wasn't desk drills where children were taught to hide under desks in the case of a nuclear attack like in the US, but in 1974 the British government published "Protect and Serve" (https://digitalarchive.wilsoncenter.org/document/protect-and-survive), a pamphlet outlining how to survive in case of a nuclear attack. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima would have been a terrifying thing for the wizarding world to behold, who had always considered Muggles to be powerless against magic. I can definitely see how the fear and paranoia of cold war nuclear attacks would inflame the rising tensions that sparked the first wizarding war.
James and Sirius would have grown up very differently. Both of them are exceedingly rich, both are purebloods (though only Sirius is considered one of the Sacred 28), and both would have had limited contact with the Muggle world.
The wizarding world seems to be very old-fashioned in many ways, though less sexist to a certain extent (though JKR can't help but infuse it with her own particular brand of misogyny). Whether it's homophobic is a coin toss. You can either state that Dumbledore was hiding his sexuality (though he definitely would want to hide he had the hots for Grindelwald lol) or its so unremarkable to the WW that it's not worth commenting about. There's a whole thing breeding thing going on in the pureblood world, so I can definitely see it as a "gay is fine, so long as you still do your duty and reproduce" kind of thing. As for trans issues, I'm sure JKR has her own opinion about that, but fuck her. If McGonagall can teach 11 year olds to turn a rat into a goblet, people can change their genders. However, they wouldn't call themselves trans or transgender, they would use the term transsexual or, less accurately, transvestite. Muggles would use this word as well. Neither of these were considered slurs at the time and were widely accepted by the community. Likewise, they wouldn't really use gay. It was certainly around by this point but it wasn't as common. Queer, lesbian, and homosexual were all used. Lily and Severus probably would not have encountered this. There were certainly poor and middle class gay people in places like Cokeworth, but the sodomy laws weren't overturned until 1967 and even then only for men over 21. Severus might have come into contact with the seedy underbelly considering where he grew up. There might have been prostitution and it might have been area for "cruising" (anonymous public sexual encounters between gay men, since it was illegal anonymity was important, so men would go to places known to be an area for cruising and have sex there).
The most high tech thing the WW is shown to have is Molly's radio. Considering just how obsessed the WW seems to be with blood status, the fact that there doesn't seem to be a mini-skirt robe option and everything is ankle-length, it's giving Downton Abbey. It's giving Jane Austen. The Ministry itself is almost a monarchy. The Wizengamot is both the judicial system and the legislative governing body. The Minister of Magic is voted in, except when the Wizengamot decides to name who they want as Minister, votes be damned, like what they tried to do with Dumbledore. The WW has never heard of "checks and balances."
The WW is harder to pin down in a historical context because it is a fantasy world that seems slightly out of step with the real one. It's safe to assume that both wartime rationing and the Blitz probably had some impact. They might not have understood exactly why it was so difficult to get sugar. Considering how small the population is, the WW might not spend much time on farming produce themselves and choose to rely on Muggles for that. Stepping out of Diagon Alley only to see the street is now a smouldering ruin would be jarring. Going to Hogwarts and learning that your Muggleborn classmate's parents died during the Blitz. Hearing that the entire wizarding communities in Nagasaki and Hiroshima were obliterated in a blink of the eye.
The world outside the WW is changing fast, even for Muggles. In 1960, Penguin Books was tried for publishing Lady Chatterley's Lover on obscenity charges. Barrister Mervyn Griffith-Jones infamously said, "Is it a book you would even wish your wife or your servants to read?" Which was viciously mocked as being put of touch. Penguin was found not guilty. I can definitely see why there was a conservative, reactionary terrorist-cult on the rise in the WW as the 1960s progressed.
Fleamont, we know, was in charge of his company. Sirius's father Orion likely had a job as well because being one of the "idle rich" is not looked upon favorably no matter how rich you were (even Lucius has a job on the Board of Governors). Law, charity, and government work are the most likely options. Euphemia and Walburga would have been involved in some sort of charity work (what Walburga thinks of as "charity" I can only imagine lol).
As far as I can tell, the WW has no form of primary education, which makes sense since they haven't really evolved since the 1910s. Education was considered the responsibility of the parents. For someone like James or Sirius, that would mean hiring first a governess and then a male tutor when they were old enough to teach them maths, writing, etc. For someone like Remus, who is in the middle class, then might mean sending him to a privately-run day school in someone's house that might have 5 - 10 students, or his parents teaching him at home. Now, the best novel about a governess is Jane Eyre, but she's rarely shown actually teaching, so if you want to see more about governesses, go with Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte (the other, other Bronte sister).
Expect Part II covering the 1970s... sometime.
@charlotterhea it was your tags that inspired me to write this! I hope you write that fic!

Matthew | All Your Curves And Edges | Romantic
Your body is changing a lot due to your pregnancy. Matthew wouldnât have it any other way.
Requested by Belle
Even though he has left his old life behind in favour of following Jesus, the luxurious house that Matthew had given to his parents still remains in the circulation when it comes to running the ministry. First, it had belonged to Alphaeus and Elisheva, since Matthew had left without another word and ordered Gaius to hand them the key, which they had kept inside a small box on the mantlepiece, not knowing what to do with it. Once they reconciled more than a year later, it had become the headquarters of the anointing oil business that Zebedee had set up.Â
From there, you had been able to run it alongside the other women of the group during the time that the Disciples were sent out two by two. Back then, you had still been so convinced that Matthew was romantically interested in Mary of Magdalene, but it couldnât have been further from the truth. It had been around that same time that Matthew had confessed his feelings to you, but not without a necessary admittance from yourself first. To find out that he reciprocated the sentiment had changed your life for the better, forever.Â
So now, two years after Jesus has gone up to His Father in heaven, it is strange to come back to that same villa in Capernaum. In spite of the place sitting empty for so long, no squatters have broken in to live inside of it. It seems that Praetor Gaius has kept an eye on the place, large sheets of textile covering the furniture to protect it from dust and rot, the blinds drawn shut.Â
Your then betrothed, now husband, pulls aside the curtains and lets the light stream inside. The place looks as if it has been frozen in time. A fond smile plays over your lips as you drink it all in. So much had changed ever since you were here the last time. And as far as you and Matthew are concerned, it might as well be one of the final times you are visiting this place, for he has decided to sell it once and for all, so that you can use the finances to fund your ministry as well as the upcoming family life that is at hand.Â
âWhy donât you go take a seat, love?â Matthew suggests, âIâll make you something to eat.âÂ
With a hand under your bulging stomach, you lean against one of the pillars for support whilst Matthew rummages about in the kitchen. Life is so much different right now, you think to yourself, reminiscing on the moments youâve spent here in the past. Everyone has branched out into different areas of the world, preaching the Good News to anyone who has ears to hear. Even though you miss Jesusâ presence amongst you, the Holy Spirit has filled you all with newfound vigour and trust in the Lord. Your faith is stronger than ever.Â
When you feel a restless kick, you sigh and decide to walk around for a bit, looking at the knick-knacks that still adorn the windowsills and tables. There still hangs a heady scent of incense that makes your head hurt a little, so you make your way towards the upstairs area, Matthew still busy making the two of you something to drink and eat, having purchased some fresh produce from the market earlier.
It takes you a little effort to ascend the stairs and you stay at the top of them for a while to catch your breath, inhaling and exhaling deeply. Once your legs feel strong enough again, you waddle towards the room you knew to be his old bedroom, deciding to maybe take a little nap there. You are certain that Matthew would find you here once he figures out that you arenât downstairs anymore.Â
Another kick has you laugh softly with a hint of pain lacing through. âEasy, little one,â you sigh, gently rubbing your stomach. You enter the bedroom, walking over to the plush bed that you had fallen asleep on in the past more often than once, when you walk by a mirror.
You had caught your own reflection only a few times ever since you have fallen pregnant in the water of a creek or in a polished silver platter, but⊠Not the full picture. Freezing in your place, you eye yourself, and more specifically, the bulging expanse of your seven-month-pregnant tummy.Â
Not only that has increased in size. Your chest and upper arms are definitely a bit bigger than before, your tunic tighter than you remember it to be. Your face is a bit puffy, but this you had known. Your ankles, too, from where fluid retention has begun in your legs due to your current state.Â
Your heart drops at the sight. Have you really been walking around looking like this? Your face suddenly warms in shame as your eyes flit over your own reflection, your breaths growing more shallow.Â
Another thought hits you hard and square in the chest. Right now, you might be allowed to look like this, since you are pregnant, but what will become of you once your baby has been born? Will your body remain like this, chubbier than before, with more skin around your limbs and around your stomach, where it will forever be visible that youâve borne a child? The stretch marks that youâve been noticing on your skin lately suddenly feel like a burden.Â
Older women had often said that their bodies had never been the same again after childbirth, and even though you had believed them beforehand, it is now a truth that makes you terrified.
Tears blur your vision and shield you from witnessing the sight any longer. Staggering back, you sit down when the back of your knees hits the bed, panic swelling inside your hammering chest.Â
â(Y/n)?â Matthewâs concerned voice bounces off the walls and reaches you upstairs, the last thing you really need. You squeeze your eyes shut and attempt to call out that you are fine, but no sound comes from your mouth. When footsteps approach you, you know that there is no way out of this conversation.Â
Finding you in tears, Matthew frowns deeply at the worrying sight. âMy love?â he croaks, rushing over to your side. He kneels in front of you, immediately grabbing hold of your hand, and he gives you a once-over. âMy love, are you alright? Whatâs going on?âÂ
You shake your head slightly, your bottom lip slipping between your teeth. You bite it so hard that you taste iron. âWhatâs wrong, my love?âÂ
âItâs justâŠâ you sniffle, nearly unable to speak due to how tight your throat feels. âThis⊠This body!â you gesture at your tummy, âThis ugly fat body!âÂ
A line forms in Matthewâs brow. âWhat are you talking about? What do you mean?âÂ
You dare to meet his gaze, albeit tearfully. âLook at the size of it! How round it isâ Do you think Iâll ever bounce back to what I was before? Never in a thousand years! Once this child is out of me, I will be fat and disgusting andââÂ
Matthew cuts you off by putting a hand over your mouth. âStop talking,â he commands, giving you a stern look. âLetâs backtrack, okay?âÂ
It is a form of communication that you and your husband had implemented to avoid miscommunication. With the former tax collectorâs struggles when it comes to assessing social situations, the two of you have come up with a way to figure out how to understand each other better. It consists of either of you asking to backtrack, so that you could sketch the situation as you interpreted it, and the other party could either agree or clarify what they meant. So far, it had worked wonders for your marriage.Â
You nod at him, your bottom lip quivering a little. âSo,â Matthew begins, âWhat I am understanding from your words and from your tears, is that you think your body is bigger than it was before, and you are afraid that it will not be beautiful once youâve given birth?âÂ
Sniffling, you hum. âYes,â you hiccough, âAnd I am terrified that I will disgust you.âÂ
That physically takes Matthew by surprise and he nearly exclaims his answer to that notion.Â
âWhat?! Disgust me?! (Y/n), how could you ever thinkâŠâ He looks at you pleadingly, with these large dark puppy dog eyes that you had fallen in love with all these years ago. âMy love, you are the most beautiful, the most breathtaking and the most incredible woman I have ever met in my entire life, and no one will ever come even close to you when it comes to what you mean to me. Every time I look at you, IâI justââ He lets out a shaky breath. âI still get shy!âÂ
Chewing your lip, you let your eyes search his face for any sign of deception, even though you are well aware that you will find none to begin with. You begin picking at your own nails, insecurity shining through in the action. âHow can you possibly know that beforehand?â you whisper, âYou might change your mind.â Your hands fiddle in your lap.
Matthew gently taps your chin to make you look up at him. âRemember what I told you before, about what went through my head when I first met you?âÂ
You cannot fight the abashed smile at the fond memory. âYes,â you breathe, reminiscing on the moment. âYou thought I wasââÂ
ââAn angel, yes,â he says with a smile, âEven more beautiful so. And you still are. Honestly, you are more beautiful to me every single day, because I somehow love you even deeper with every passing moment.âÂ
Your heart swells at the words your husband directs towards you; you know that Matthew has struggled with embracing his emotions in general, so the fact that he is so open and vulnerable with you about what you mean to him speaks volumes.Â
âYou are everything and then so much more. Every time I see you, you take my breath away, (Y/n). Every time I touch you, I get so overwhelmed with the fact that you chose me, out of all the people, in spite of my past, you decided you wanted this life with me. To marry me, to build a family with me. I cherish every single part about you.âÂ
Your eyes shimmer with new tears, this time out of gratitude and happiness. Matthew isnât exaggerating; he isnât the type for it, so you know his words to be spoken from the heart. âAnd I will make sure to tell you that every single day, that all your flaws and imperfections are so loved, because they are part of you, and there is not one single thing I would change about you, my beautiful, gorgeous wife.âÂ
The response that leaves you is a shaky sob behind a watery smile, and you stand up to embrace him. âOh, Matthew. I⊠Iâm sorryâ I didnât want to doubt you.âÂ
âI didnât interpret it that way,â he reassures you. âFrom what I can tell, it just seems you are worried about all the changes we both are going through now that the baby is so close to being born, and all the uncertainties that come with parenthood. I feel overwhelmed, too.âÂ
You can almost hear your own words reflected in his, the ones you had so often whispered in his ear whenever his emotions confused him. The bond you two had forged over the years was indestructible, strengthened by your unwavering faith. This time around, he was the one comforting you. Heâd ease your childrenâs fears like that, too. Everything was coming full circle.
Inhaling his scent, you sigh and relax in his arms. You wish you could stay in this moment forever. Matthew kisses your cheek, your forehead, before chastely pecking your lips. When his hands protectively rest on your tummy, you pull away from the kiss and smile at him softly.Â
âI love you, Matthew,â you murmur, rubbing your nose against his own.
A faint blush creeps over his cheeks. âAnd I love you, more than anything,â he answers you, âMy heart.âÂ
That makes you melt even further into him, the two of you tangling into another intimate embrace, your soft breaths wafting against the crook of his neck, his fingers gently taking off your veil so that they can play with your hair, carefully scratching at your scalp.
The moment only ends when a sharp kick pulls you out of it, and both of you chuckle at the visible movement underneath your dress. âOh, someone is hungry.âÂ
âGood thing I finished preparing a nice meal,â Matthew tells you, taking your hand into his and kissing your knuckles. âNow, my love, will you join me for dinner downstairs?â
You hum, searching his face for a few meaningful moments. As much as you adore the fact that youâve got a little one on the way and that you are starting a family with him, part of you is going to miss these silent, shared moments of intimacy between the two of you.Â
You will cherish every second as much as youâve been enjoying your life together so far, both terrified and excited about what the future holds. With a small nod, you go, ready to share a meal with him.

what do you think the wizarding world economy is? I donât think theyâre capitalist, theyâre obviously not communists, but Iâm not sure beyond them. sometimes I think it must be a state run restricted market but maybe itâs just a bunch of cottage industries? they donât seem involved in agriculture.
I kind of see the WW as a culture of the upper classes only, like the majority of magical folk occupied a higher classes status than serfs (like those in a religious order, maybe, and aristocracy) which further complicates this question
omg I'll be honest, I'm not super well versed in economics to be able to give a very educated or definitive answer to this haha, but it's an interesting topic! Also there's not that much specific information in canon, because I don't think jkr gave this any thought whatsoever lmao. Which to be fair is not really necessary to do in a kid's fantasy.
The government does regulate the market-- such as with Percy's cauldron bottoms haha. Percy mentions that this crucial world-changing bit of legislation is specifically meant to address imported cauldrons, indicating there is trade with other nations, and trade agreements. The Ministry also regulates import/export, which we also see with Ali Bashir and his carpets. Given Crouch and Percy's attitudes towards both Ali Bashir and the foreign cauldron bottoms, I think it's very possible that the Ministry's policy towards international trade is generally protectionist rather than free-trade. Tariffs for everyone! đŹ
It seems as though goods are generally produced through craftsmanship rather than large-scale industrial processes. As far as I can remember there's never any mention of any factories or true industrialisation of any sort, rather goods such as broomsticks, snitches, wands, robes are produced by hand, on an individual basis by dedicated craftsmen.
So you could be right about cottage industries being prevalent in terms of internal trade; it's honestly probably some sort of mixed economy with maybe lingering elements of mercantilism (which would make sense given they're 'behind' the Muggle world in many respects.) but I'm not certain what, if anything, Britain would export. Possibilities are potions ingredients, broomsticks, robes (this would be a good parallel to Britain's history with the textile industry) or, perhaps, floo powder.
Floo powder is maybe an interesting product to look at. According to this pottermore entry on Floo Powder, manufacture of Floo powder is strictly controlled, and "no shortage of Floo powder has ever been reported, nor does anybody know anyone who makes it. Its price has remained constant for one hundred years: two Sickles a scoop." So that does seem to indicate a high level of intervention in trade by the Ministry. Also i have no idea what the fact that the price hasn't changed for a century says about either inflation or currency rates lol.
Anyway, tbh I think they must engage in agriculture in some fashion, because a girl's gotta eat and we know that food cannot be magically produced. I guess it's possible that they somehow exchange with Muggles (or other wizarding states. this seems more likely. maybe spain lol, since a lot of produce sold in the UK is grown here.) But I tend to think they're mostly self-sustaining.
Agriculture can be made much more efficient through the use of magic, basically eliminating a lot of the manual labour involved. You'd also need much less space (and it's already a reduced population) and could potentially speed up the time it takes to grow crops. The Weasleys have a vegetable patch and pigs and chickens-- many magical families seem to live in rural areas so I can imagine there might be a system where families who grow crops and/or keep livestock can trade in surplus produce for refined goods such as flour, oil, etc or 'luxury' goods like chocolate. Some sort of state-organised smallholding situation makes more sense to me as opposed to large-scale agricultural production.
As far as I can recall, we have no canon examples of anyone going shopping for food. But there must be something in place. The Hogwarts kitchens must go through an incredible amount of supplies (and yes food can be magically multiplied, but even so) and it has to come from somewhere. It's likely that the Hogwarts house-elves deal with procurement themselves.
Speaking of which, there's also the factor of slavery forming a part of this society and therefore the economy. We know of the existence of 'elf-made wine,' although this is treated in canon as a luxury good. It's likely that most wine is made through magic. There's a spell that produces a 'fountain of wine' and it's unclear whether beverages are beholden to the food exception to gamp's law. Either way it's almost certainly possible to transfigure grapes directly into wine, and therefore wine produced artisanally (by elves) is given more value. Basically I don't think they have elves engaged in industrial-scale labour, but they still form a part of the economy in some way.
And the other thing to consider (and that we don't know) is to what extent the goblins are involved in the wizarding economy and in what way. They control the only bank and also control the production of currency. I developed some Goblin lore a while ago, which you can find here, but something I theorised is that Goblins don't actually value wizarding currency internally within their own society (rather precious metals themselves) and basically use it as a means to exert some influence over wizarding society, to keep themselves afloat so that wizards don't completely subjugate them the way they have the house-elves. Technically the Goblins (as I envision them) would be Bullionist I believe. But the wizarding economy and the goblin economy would be closely intertwined, basically interdependent.
So... I'm just not sure how all this would be defined lmao. This got very long because I was just vomiting every possible thought about the wizarding economy lol so sorry. Perhaps someone who knows more about economics than me (art degree lol) would be able to give a better answer haha.
like the majority of magical folk occupied a higher classes status than serfs
Regarding this-- we have a few examples from Beedle, which is really our only source of information about how magical people lived pre-Statute of Secrecy. Babbity Rabbity is a washerwoman for a King who hates magic, for instance. Of course, this is fiction in-universe, but I think it still gives some indication of what life was like for witches and wizards at the time. Similarly the wizards in 'Hopping Pot' live in a cottage in a small village, but on the other hand the Warlock in 'Hairy Heart' is wealthy and lives in a castle. From this, I would hazard that witches and wizards were most likely present in all levels of society pre-Statute. (and this also follows since a child born to Muggles can have magical ability, they wouldn't suddenly be relegated to a different social class) We know some, like the Malfoys, had close ties to the nobility, but likely not all.
#replies#juniperpyre#this was a really long winded way to say IDK LOL#i like to think there are conspiracy theories about the ministry's control of floo powder and the floo network

Asian slaves, indigenous Americans, and identity in colonial era Mexico
The Spanish Philippines had a diverse slave population for local labor and export, including Filipino Indians [i.e. natives; indios], Muslim war captives (moros), and foreign slaves from as far away as Portuguese India.
⊠Upon their arrival, chino slaves [i.e. any Asian slave, not just Chinese] were absorbed by the urban economy of Mexico City, where they mainly worked as domestic servants or in textile mills (obrajes) ⊠For their part, working in the city provided chinos with some possibilities for manumission. Chinos in domestic service were especially apt to embrace the limited opportunities available to them and to experience some social mobility. In the obrajes, chinos had few of the freedoms given to domestic servants, but they did benefit from government oversight of the industry. During official visits, chino slaves appealed for protection from overt exploitation by claiming that they were Indians (even if they were from Portuguese India). Remarkably, visiting inspectors listened to their complaints, and they often responded by liberating individual chinos under the assumption that they were indeed native vassals and could thus not be held in bondage. The overall experience of chinos in the viceroyal capital confirms the benefits of living close to the center of colonial power.
The presence of free indigenous immigrants from the Spanish Philippines in Mexico reinforced the idea that all chinos were Indians. The complex governing structure of colonial Mexico involved two republics or political communities (the repĂșblica de indios and the repĂșblica de españoles); this organization separated the indigenous majority from everyone else to facilitate the collection of tribute and the ministry of the Catholic Church ⊠[N]ative immigrants from the Philippines purposely sought to confirm their membership in the Republic because corporate status provided personal advantages. They asked to be tallied in tribute rolls in Mexico to benefit from concomitant privileges, such as trading rights and legal representation through the General Indian Court. At the same time, free Filipinos were frequently confused with chino slaves - a situation that had serious consequences for Filipinos' relations with colonial institutions and enslaved individuals. Some immigrants resented having their indigenous identity questioned and sought to maintain a sense of their Indian-ness by keeping their distance from chino slaves. The majority, however, expressed solidarity with chino slaves. Filipino artisans, for example, took on chino slaves as apprentices and taught them marketable skills. Similarly, Filipino traders incorporated chinos into their own credit networks to facilitate self-purchase.
Individual chinos who were manumitted also embraced an Indian identity, regardless of whether they were from Goa, Macau, or other places in South and Southeast Asia. In this way, chinos challenged official attempts to define them solely as former slaves. Instead, they sought to join the free republic. The possibility for this kind of social integration caused widespread concern among slave owners. To defend their property rights, masters started to brand chino slaves on the face, rather than on the chest or arm as they did with Africans, in order to dissuade them from fleeing and "passing" as free Indians. This horrifying development shows that Indian communities welcomed runaway chino slaves and, by extension, that slave owners sought visible markers of their slaves' status.

The discovery, made by Dr. Ruth Shady SolĂs and her team from the Caral Archaeological Zone (ZAC) of Peruâs Ministry of Culture, offers a glimpse into the prominent role of women in early Andean society."
by Dario Radley April 25, 2025
Archaeologists in Peru have unearthed a well-preserved 5,000-year-old burial of a high-status woman at the Ăspero archaeological siteâan ancient fishing settlement associated with the Caral civilization, the oldest civilization in the Americas. The discovery, made by Dr. Ruth Shady SolĂs and her team from the Caral Archaeological Zone (ZAC) of Peruâs Ministry of Culture, offers a glimpse into the prominent role of women in early Andean society.

Remains of a 5000-year-old woman from the Caral civilization. Credit: Ministry of Culture of Peru (Ministerio de Cultura del PerĂș), via www.gob.pe. Used for non-commercial news coverage purposes.
The burial was unearthed at Huaca de los Ădolos, a public ceremonial building in Ăspero, a site on the Peruvian coast in the Barranca province, some 180 kilometers north of Lima. Ăspero was one of the principal satellite cities of Caral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and flourished from 3000 to 1800 BCâcontemporaneous with ancient Egypt, Sumer, and China, though it developed in complete isolation.
The remains are those of a woman between the ages of 20 and 35 years old and about 1.5 meters (5 feet) tall. What is remarkable about this find is the state of preservation: archaeologists recovered parts of her skin, nails, and hairâa very uncommon condition for human remains in the region. She was wrapped in multiple layers of cotton fabric and rush mats and covered with an embroidered feather mantle of bright macaw feathers, an art form that is one of the oldest surviving examples of Andean featherwork.
With the body was a rich collection of funerary offerings carefully arranged in two tiers. These consisted of bottle-shaped vessels, reed baskets, a bone needle with intricate incisions, a shell that most likely came from the Amazon basin, weaving tools, a piece of woolen textile, a fishing net, a toucan beak inlaid with green and brown beads, and over thirty sweet potatoes. The items not only point to the high social standing of the woman but also to the advanced trade and cultural networks in which the Caral society was a part, stretching as far as the Amazon.
According to an official statement from the Peruvian State, the discovery of the feathered panel and other exquisitely worked objects âindicates a high level of development of specialized techniques during the Caral Civilization.â The feather artwork, in particular, indicates the symbolic and aesthetic sophistication achieved by this ancient Andean civilization.
Researchers point out that the burial not only attests to the presence of elite female figures in Caral but also aligns with other elite burials unearthed at Ăspero over the past several yearsâsuch as the âLady of the Four Tupusâ in 2016 and the âElite Manâ in 2019âa pattern showing ceremonial burials among the elite class. The burial group has been compared with the subsequent elite burial practices of La Galgada in the Ăncash region, supporting the hypothesis of a society that bestowed special status and power on women.
A multidisciplinary team is now analyzing the womanâs remains and the associated artifacts to further understand her health, diet, cause of death, and the sociocultural use of the objects that accompanied her in burial.

Lily Ebert
Auschwitz survivor and writer determined to bear witness to the experience of all Holocaust victims
Lily Ebert, who has died aged 100, was one of the last survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. She dedicated the final decades of her life to bearing witness to the experience of Holocaust victims.
She survived transportation to the camp where her mother, Nina, a younger sister Berta and brother Bela did not. They were singled out by the Auschwitz doctor Josef Mengele, the notorious âangel of deathâ, on the arrival of the train bringing them from Hungary.
Gesturing to the left with his stick, Mengele consigned half the family to the gas chambers, and Lily and her two sisters, RenĂ© and Piri, to the right, to be put to work. Seeing smoke rising later from the crematorium chimney and thinking it was a factory, Lily was told by another inmate: âThey are burning your families there. Your parents, your sisters, your brothers. Theyâre burning them.â
Her experience led decades later to talks to schools and colleges, to conferences, interviews and to collaborating with government ministries. When she was 96, she published a bestselling memoir, co-written with her great-grandson Dov Forman, called Lilyâs Promise: How I survived Auschwitz and Found the Strength to Live. With Dov, again, she created a TikTok account, which gained 2Â million followers.

She was born Livia Engelman, the eldest of six children of Ahron, a textile shop owner, and Nina (nee Bresnitz), in BonyhĂĄd in south-western Hungary, a town divided between its German, Orthodox and Jewish inhabitants, with the latter making up 14% of the population.
Her father died when she was 18, and two years later, in March 1944, when German troops invaded the country, she and the rest of the family were rounded up with the townâs Jews. Within weeks they were all loaded on to cattle trucks for the five-day rail journey to Auschwitz, âlocked in with corpses, a few more each dayâ, she recalled.
Her brother Imre had carved out a hollow in the heel of their motherâs shoe and hidden in it the family jewellery, including a tiny pendant of a golden angel that Lily had been given when she was five. In the late stages of the journey she and her mother swapped shoes. The hidden jewellery was missed by the Nazis and Lily retained the pendant. It was, she said, âthe only gold to enter and leave Auschwitz with its original ownerâ.
The three sisters worked as seamstresses at the camp, during which time Lily nearly died of scarlet fever, before being moved four months later to another camp, Altenburg, part of Buchenwald, near Weimar. There they worked in a munitions factory, Lily managing to pass defective bullets with usable ones in her job as a supervisor. When her motherâs shoes disintegrated she hid the pendant in a piece of bread, which she kept under her armpit. For the rest of her life she always carried a morsel of bread as a reminder of her wartime deprivation.
In April 1945 the women at the factory were forced to march from the camp without food, water, sleep or shoes, with those who lagged behind summarily shot. On the third day the guards disappeared as American tanks approached. By then, Ebert said, they were âunrecognisable as human beings, emaciated creatures, filthy, hollow-eyed, half-crazed with relief and disbeliefâ. They were originally moved back to Buchenwald â staying in the guard quarters this time â and then to Switzerland for rehabilitation.
The sisters emigrated to Israel in June 1946, living first at a kibbutz and then near Tel Aviv. In 1948 Lily married a Hungarian businessman, Shmuel Ebert, and the couple had three children, Esti, Bilha and Roni.
After the Hungarian uprising in 1956 the family was reunited with Imre, who had also survived the Holocaust only to be trapped after the Communist takeover. In 1967 Lily and Shmuel moved to Golders Green, north London; he died in 1984.
Lily did not speak of her experiences until the 1990s, after joining a survivorsâ support group. In 1992 she first addressed a Holocaust education conference and later helped found a survivorsâ centre in Golders Green. The book, written with the then 16-year-old Dov, followed in 2021. âI realised that I wanted to record what had happened to me in Auschwitz-Birkenau. I wanted my children to know eventually and their children and their childrenâs children.â
She was awarded a British Empire Medal, was made a Knightâs Cross of the Order of Merit in Hungary, and an MBE last year.
Her portrait and those of six other survivors are in the Royal Collection. When she met the then Prince Charles at the exhibition opening at the Queenâs Gallery, Buckingham Palace, in 2022, she told him: âMeeting you, it is for everyone who lost their lives.â He replied: âBut it is a greater privilege for me.â
After her death, the King â who is patron of the Holocaust Memorial Trust â said of Lily: âI am so proud that she found a home in Britain where she continued to tell the world of the atrocities she had witnessed, as a reminder for our generation â and for future generations â of the depths of depravity to which humankind can fall, when reason, compassion and truth are abandoned.â
She returned to visit the camp with Esti in 1988 and again with three grandchildren in 1996. She wrote: âThe satisfaction of walking freely into Auschwitz and walking freely out again, through those gates of hell, made me stronger.

âWhen I was brought to Auschwitz in 1944 they told me there was no way out, only through the chimney. âThis was not your plan,â I kept thinking. âLook at me: I am back. You wanted to kill me and yet I am here again. You murderers arenât here any more, but I am ⊠I have kept the promise I made myself in the camp. I have told the world what happened.ââ
She is survived by Piri, two of her three children, 10 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
