PLI scheme for Pharma, drones and textiles to be modified by govt

New Delhi: The government is planning to make adjustments to the production-linked incentive PLI scheme for pharmaceuticals, drones, and textile sectors. According to an official statement, these modifications are intended to stimulate investment and bolster manufacturing. An official source has stated that these sectors were chosen on the basis of their performance under the existing scheme for various products.

Higher disbursement scheme for PLI scheme

The official said, “Disbursement of production-linked incentives (PLI) for white goods (AC and LED lights) would start this month and that would push the amount of disbursement, which was only Rs 2,900 crore till March 2023.”

After the identification of sectors, a combined note for approval from the Union Cabinet will be sent. The change in disbursement includes an extension of time for Pharma sectors, and addition of products in some sectors. Within the textile industry, there is a proposal to expand the scope of particular products within the technical textiles category, while in the drone sector, there is a plan to raise the incentive amount.

Import Substitution: A Tried and Tested Policy for Failure

Import substitution is a policy by which the state aims to increase the consumption of goods that are made domestically by levying high tariffs on foreign goods. This gives an advantage to the domestic manufacturers as their goods will be cheaper and preferable in the market compared to foreign products. India adopted this model post-independence, and it continued till the 1991 reforms. Due to import substitution, the domestic producers captured the entire Indian market, but there was slow progress in technological advancements, and the quality of Indian products was inferior to the foreign manufactured ones. But after the reforms, the Indian market was opened to everyone, and the consumer got the best value for the price he paid. The Make in India policy of the present government is reminiscent of the pre-1991 inward-looking Indian state.

Even though Make in India is not a classic import substitution case, it aimed to reach that end. Manufacturing in India was consistent as its contribution to GDP stayed between 12% and 18% from the 1960s to now, and the reforms of 1991 made little changes to that while the services kept growing. Hence, it is tempting for any government to aspire to an India which is a manufacturing hub and is not dependent on anyone. But the problem is that manufacturing a complete product requires different parts, each of which is imported from various places. There is value addition at every step of the supply chain. For example, the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme supports the manufacturing of mobile phones in India but we cannot be completely Atmanirbhar as the customized semiconductor chips are all produced and imported from Taiwan.

Another issue of concern is the apparent change in the political mindset. The thrust of the ruling dispensation has also somewhat been to that end. Various statements have been made and publicized to urge the Indian consumer to buy local. This directly supports an inward-looking economy that goes against an open market’s heart.

This is the pre-1991 era mindset making a comeback. A ’good product’ is an objective fact, and if a product is not competitive abroad, how can it be competitive at home? It is asking the consumers to compromise on the value while spending more. Former NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Aravind Panagariya says that import substitution can decrease the growth of Indian GDP by 2 percentage points annually. He also mentions that when import substitution was implemented for electronics, the imports almost doubled in value in 5 years, but the exports barely increased in comparison. This is due to the lack of competition.

The main problem with import substitution is that it decreases quality by killing competition. When the foreign products are effectively stopped from entering the market, the domestic producer will not have any incentive to better their product. As the standards go lower, the quality of the product follows, and Indian products will not be able to compete globally. For any country to become an exporting power, it needs to import a lot. China and US, the top two exporters globally, are also the top two importers in the world. You cannot export much by going soft on import substitution as you will not have access to the latest technology, best practices, and human resources, which will hamper productivity.

Hence, import substitution will only weaken India by creating an inefficient economy that can neither produce adequately at home nor compete actively abroad. The revival of this policy will not yield any new results.

Loki has always been impulsive; everyone in the palace, probably in the whole of Asgard, knows this. It is well within their abilities to plan, and scheme, and play the long game, but giving in to their impulsivity is significantly more fun, and infinitely more chaotic – plus, of course, watching other people respond to their spur-of-the-moment antics is always entertaining.

Admittedly, they are drunk when they select this particular course of action. Meandering through the palace grounds after Thor and his friends have plied them with wine, mead, and Norns know what else, the trickster is theoretically making their way to their rooms ( – while in actual fact heading for Sigyn’s – ) when their gaze lands on the trellis below their lover’s window. Well wouldn’t that be a way to make an entrance?

Unsurprisingly, they are discovered before they arrive, but Sigyn’s hissed exclamation only has them grinning up at her, eyes alight with alcohol-fueled mischief. She knows them well enough not to object further.

Feet land firmly on the balcony, just a little wobbly and classically overconfident. “It’s fine, I would have been fine! Magic, remember? I could have saved myself in any number of ways!” They still grip their lover’s hands, twisting to entwine their fingers and tug her closer. “I wanted to see you. I missed you.”

The doors to her balcony are wide open as a concession to how warm the night is, and she's come to lean against the balustrade as she braids her hair before bed. When she hears movement in the ground beneath her room, she peers over the balcony— only to be met with the sight of Loki, climbing up the flower-covered trellis in order to reach her room.

"What in the Nine are you doing?!" She hisses, and the words couldn't sound less scolding if she tried. When they look up at the sound of her voice and she sees the determination and mischief in their expression, she shakes her head with a smile.

"You are ridiculous," Sigyn laughs, holding out her hands to help them over the balustrade and onto the balcony with her, and she doesn't let go once they're standing on solid ground. "What if you'd fallen?"

Anyway, great at being deceptive seems like a Fjord thing

I was thinking of four plying it to get it up to, like, a fingering (still a very thin yarn) but was kind of done with this fiber at that point

The Freedom of Expression, radio version - Ep.58, Nov 2016 - Unique tap/faucet designs, Gang-rape carried out by Keiō University students.

Kaoru starts by saying the beginning of the Kisou tour is only days away, and Joe says he thinking of joining one of the dates and having drinks with Kaoru afterwards. Seeing a great live, and having good drinks afterwards is one of the best ways for him to shake off the stress of daily life. Getting drunk does turn him into a bit of a dirty old man though.

Kaoru's first topic is about the plumbing company 'Kakudai' (based in Osaka), who have made a tap/faucet in the shape of a kettle, so that the water comes out from the kettle spout when you tip it, instead from a regular tap. They also have a tap which resembles the taps found at a schools, which are twisted on and off from underneath, except the water comes out from the part underneath this time. Kaoru also notices that there is a tap which looks like a puffed up blow fish. He thinks these taps are interesting but would probably get bored of them if he had them installed in his home. Joe says they would be good to show off to friends who visit your house. He admires the creativity of the company. Kaoru explains that it looks as if the company is not making a profit on these novelty designs, due to the excessive cost that goes into making them. However, the company continues to sell them, as they were designed specifically to capture the imagination of kids, and get more kids interested in taps. Kids these days are used to just putting their hands under the tap, and water coming out automatically. So with these unique designs, it may spark their interest into the actual mechanics of the object. Joe explains that the interesting thing about this company is that they plan to stop making these designs if they start making a profit on them, because if they become popular, they will become normalised, and therefore will not spark a kid's imagination anymore. Kaoru thinks these kind of taps would be fun if they were installed in bars/drinking establishments. Joe thinks that that drunks would probably end up breaking them in that case, as they might not be able to figure out how to get the water running.

Dobashi joins them next and brings up the news of a gang rape comitted by male members of Keiō University's Advertisement Society against a fellow female student. At the time of this show's recording, the incident was still undergoing police investigation. The society was responsible for organizing the 'Miss Keiō' beauty pageant (which had since been cancelled), and six male student members of the society apparently summoned the female student to their dorm, plied her with drink, led her to a seperate floor, and filmed it as two of the men raped her. According to Tokyo Sports it is suspected the the perpetrators may be trying various routes to limit the damage they recieve, through the many powerful alumni they have who are currently working in big advertisement companies. TV reports have suggested the students might have filmed the incident for the purpose of porn. Some of the accused are claiming they were given consent, but the truth is unclear. Dobashi adds that the victim was apparently plied with large amounts of tequila, making it doubtful as to whether she was actually able to give informed consent. Joe comments that its a scary thought that they might have taken the video as a way of proving their innocence if they got accused afterwards (*Im assuming this means so they could show they had consent?*). Doing it is bad enough, but scheming in cold blood to try to get away with it is worse. They knew what they were doing was wrong, hence coming up with a way to get away with it.

Dobashi then suggests that as smartphones have become more developed, its easier to make gonzo porn (Joe laughs, Kaoru tells him to stop it), but its also easier for victims to get their side out, so these kind of incidents can get heated.

Dobashi wonders how this case would have been treated if it were only one man and one woman involved, and thinks there are probably a lot of drunk women falling asleep at university society parties out there. Kaoru asks listeners to be careful when attending drinks parties, and issues a plea for Dobashi to close up this convo. Dobashi does this by saying to Kaoru, 'Have you been drinking a lot of alcohol recently, Kaoru?' Kaoru tells him not to take this in the same direction as the end of the eel/swimsuit convo (in Ep 54). Dobashi composes himself and asserts that the gang rape incident is unforgivable.

To finish, Kaoru plugs the Kisou tour (which Joe is looking forward to). He then mentions the Instagram campaign, and tells listeners not to catch a cold during the winter.

i posted an excerpt of this with the placeholder title “the perils of taking quests from little old ladies who live in the woods.” i’m still rather fond of that title, but it’s a little too long xD

this was written mostly as an exercise to kind of... shake the mental cobwebs off, after seeing a post about accessibility + princesses in towers. i really liked how it came out, so i decided to polish it up and post it :D i meant to have it up sooner, but... life :p

a conspicuous lack of dragons

The tower is exactly as the old woman described. White brick, with a deep purple roof, standing on a mountain at the edge of a prosperous kingdom. Only a few windows adorn the top of the tower. The rest is bare, and unadorned. You are… a little relieved. The old woman had said that this tower belonged to a dragon. You weren’t particularly looking forward to fighting it—and though you’re sure you still might have to, at least you have time for a little more reconnaissance.

Save for the base, where there is a plain wooden door.

You… cannot say you were expecting that. You swing off of your mare, and stow your more important belongings with her, keeping with you only your sword, shield, and medicine kit. You examine the door carefully, and find that—at least from this side—it is as plain as it appears.

You open the door, and step inside.

The base of the tower is rather bare. There are a few crates and boxes, covered in a layer of dust and cobwebs. There is a conspicuous lack of traps. You frown, step further in, and wait for the door to slam behind you.

It does not.

Suspicions piqued, you start up the twisting and winding ramp (not stairs!) that lead to the top. You draw your sword as you do, ready to strike if anything—or anyone—pops out at you.

Nothing does.

There are still no traps; no guards; and no hints of magic. The most arduous thing about it is the trip to the top. Another plain, wooden door is there; though it has been painted a pale lilac. There is a small peephole near the top.

You see no strange mechanisms. No glowing runes. No door knockers with faces, ready to entice you into a battle of riddles.

Your frown only deepens. You push the door open, fully expecting to be greeted by the most heinous monster you’ve ever faced.

Instead, you find a young woman. You can only presume that this is the princess. She is seated on a plush couch, reading a rather thick book. She looks up at the creak of the door, and gives you a brief once over.

One brow raised, she asks, “Well? What are you doing here?”

“I’m… here to rescue you?” you say, but it comes out as more of a question. You feel dumb. Also numb. Off-balance. You aren’t sure what’s going on at all. Nothing here is what you expected it to be, and you’re not sure how to take that at all.

“Oh,” the princess says. She looks disinterested again. “Mm. Thank you, but no thank you. I am perfectly content where I am.”

“I… but…” You stop. You’re not really sure where you were going with that.

The princess sighs. She marks her place, and lays the book on a side table. She gestures to one of the chairs. “Let me guess,” she says. “A lovely little old lady hired you. Very sweet, greets everyone with a plate of cookies. She shuffles more than walks and leans on a cane. Very harmless. Very unassuming. She told you a sob story about a poor princess, shut in a tower for… Oh, I can’t imagine what she used this time. Someone was jealous? They were afraid I would be stolen away? I’ve been cursed?”

“Um.” You’ve taken a seat now. “A dragon had taken you and hid you here, to hold you for ransom.”

The princess rolls her eyes. “Ah. We’re stereotyping dragons, now. Lovely.” She rearranges the blanket on her legs. “The truth, then. I am a princess, she did not lie to you about that. However, I am not in this tower because of dragons, curses, jealousy, beauty, or whatever reasons she can dream up. This tower was, in fact, my idea.”

“Why?” you blurt.

The princess smiles. There’s something a little secretive about it, like she’s letting you in on something. “You see,” she says, “I was born a little different from the rest of the world. Not much, mind, but enough to make it hard for me to function in your world. I’ve got a touch of power in me. I can, of course, cast spells. But that is not why I am here. I am here because I also have a touch of the Sight. And that… well. It makes me a little… sensitive.” She drums her fingers on the arm of the sofa. “It is hard to explain, because I can do so many different little tricks, but I will try. Since you came all this way.

“The main one, I think, is being able to sense emotions. This one is not something I can turn off. Being in a crowded room is… overwhelming. I can feel what everyone else is feeling, and they are hardly ever feeling the same things. It is enough to drown my own emotions out, and it is—I am sure you can imagine—unpleasant.

“I can also sense surface thoughts, sometimes. When they are very loud, or when I care to turn an ear to them. When I was younger, I could not control this, and… thus, crowds of people were, once again, very uncomfortable.

“And, of course, I can predict things. With an object—clear or mirrored, preferably—I can see things going on in other places. It takes focus, and practice, and it helps if I’ve been there or have a clear idea of what I am looking for, but it is possible. I can catch glimpses of things that will happen, or could happen.

“I can also see the future of an object, if I touch it. Or look into its past, see where it’s been. This was another thing I could not control as a young one, and made things very, very unpleasant.

“There are other things, too, but these are the three that made me seek solace here. I get visitors. I leave sometimes. But, yes. My being here is very much a choice. I thank you, again, for your concern. But it is not warranted.”

“I…” You bite your lip, and shake your head. “I do not understand why I was sent here, then. If you are not in danger.”

“Ah. Well.” The princess smiles wryly. “The old woman who sent you here is not an old woman at all. That is the disguise she dons, when she sends people to me. I believe because it makes her seem more trustworthy… or perhaps because she thinks its funny. I don’t know.” She shrugs. “It doesn’t matter. She sent you here, the same way she did the others, because she wants to use you to get past my wards.” She turns her gaze from you, and looks at the door you came in. “Isn’t that right, Muriel?”

In the doorway stands a woman who is nothing like the little old lady who plied you with cookies and a sob story about a kidnapped princess. She has long golden hair that shines in the window light. She walks with a finely carved staff; a glowing orb at the top. When she gets close, however, you can see her eyes. And those—those are the eyes of the old lady. Warm brown with a touch of humor. She sits in the empty seat.

“You turned the last three away at the door,” Muriel says. “I was beginning to think that you were angry with me.”

The princess hums. “I don’t know why you bother with the pretext,” she says. “You could just have them deliver a letter.”

“I could. But then however would I test their virtue?”

“Virtue?” you ask, before you can stop yourself. You are still so terribly confused. You lost the plot somewhere around when you opened that first door—and you don’t think you’d ever quite caught back up.

Muriel looks at you, as if she was surprised that you were still there. “Well, yes, darling,” she says. “First to see if you were willing to face a dragon to rescue a princess you’d never even met. And then to see if you could get through the doors. They don’t let you in unless you’re pure of intention.”

That doesn’t really clear anything up.

“But why?”

“I presume to keep the princess safe.”

“That’s not what our good knight is asking, and you know it,” the princess chides.

Muriel grins. “Because I’ve need of you, good knight. We’ll get to that. For now…” She looks back the princess. “What do you think, dear? You know I trust your judgment more than anyone else’s.”

“Speak more plainly, Muriel,” the princess says. “I’ve no idea which scheme you’re speaking about now. I can’t possibly keep track of them all.”

Muriel huffs. “The knight, dear.”

The princess gives you another once over. “Depends,” she says. “What is it you’re needing?”

“The gryphon, I think.”

The princess seems to consider that, then sniffs. “No. You’d be better off asking one of the other three.”

You feel indignant.

“I would send this one for the unicorn.”

Less indignant. But only just.

“Oh, truly?” Muriel looks at you again, and there is a new appreciation in her eyes. “Well. You know best, on the subject of unicorns, I suppose.”

“It isn’t that I don’t appreciate the flattery, because I do. However, I really must ask you to drop the pretense. You didn’t come all of this way to ask me that. Speak true, Muriel.”

“Perhaps I just wanted to see you.” Muriel’s tone and expression goes coy, almost coquettish.

A ghost of a smile appears on the princess’s mouth. “If you wish to engage me in courtship, Muriel, there are far less roundabout ways to go about it. Which, mind, I would appreciate far more than the games.”

Muriel flushes, almost imperceptibly. “Ah. Yes, I suppose that’s true.”

The princess inclines her head, and in a gentler tone says, “Your affections would be welcome.”

“Truly?”

“I would not lie to you, dear,” the princess says. “However, once again, I must ask you to speak the truth. Why have you come?”

Muriel sighs. “Your perceptiveness grates, you know?”

“So you have said.”

“Fine. I have come to steal you away again.”

“Ah. Where to?” The princess looks remarkably calm at that comment, though your hackles have raised. Wherever Muriel wishes to go, you do not think the princess should have any part of it. You have a feeling, though, that if you said anything, the princess would—kindly—tell you to mind your own business.

“The Wilds,” Muriel says.

This means nothing to you, but the princess nods.

“Of course,” she murmurs to herself. “Right, well. When do you wish to leave?”

“Once I’ve gotten this one packed off,” Muriel says. She gestures to you.

“Do I get a say?” you ask. Demand.

“Well of course, dear,” Muriel says. “You’ll either take the mission I give you or… go off to do whatever you do when you’re not taking quests from strange women. Either way.”

You huff, but nod.

“Very well,” the princess says. “I am agreeable.”

“Excellent.” Muriel sends her a quick flash of a smile. The glimpse you catch is soft and subtle. The princess’s own lips quirk in response… and then suddenly, both their eyes are on you again.

Muriel is looking at you like she’s a cat and you’re… something small and skittering. You don’t know if she’s going to pounce, or if she just wishes to watch, but either way—you’re more than a little unnerved.

The princess, on the other hand, looks kind and a little amused. “Any questions?” she prompts.

“Why did she—you—need my help to get in the tower? If you two are friends, I mean.”

“Because Muriel practices dark magic,” the princess says plainly.

You start; sitting up right as if a rod has just been plunged through your spine.

The princess laughs. “That does not mean that she is evil. Your knightly virtue is still intact. Dark magic is simply a tool, like any other, and Muriel wields it well.”

“But…”

The princess reaches out, and lays a hand on yours. You can feel the weight of it through your gauntlet, though not much else. “Muriel is something of a trickster, it is true. She lies. Sometimes for a good reason, and sometimes simply for her own amusement. She does not mean any harm when she does it… and so, she will never quite be sorry for it. It is her way. But let this be a lesson to you. If you work with her—or, truly, anyone else—do your research before blindly following what they tell you.” She pats your hand, and withdraws. “Now. Muriel will explain what she wants you to do, if you let her, while I get ready.”

She stands, folds the blanket she had been using, and takes her book off to another room. You are left alone with Muriel, and you eye her warily.

Muriel does not seem to mind your distrust. If anything, it seems to amuse her more. “So,” she says. “Unicorns.”

“I won’t kill one,” you say, immediately.

Muriel laughs. “Nor would I ask that of you,” she says. “I do not wish for you to kill one. Nor maim one, capture one, or any other nasty thing your mind has conjured up.” She reaches into a satchel, and pulls out a small vial. Inside is a beautiful, shimmering liquid. “You are familiar with Eaton’s River, yes?”

You nod. You’d been, once.

“Mm. If you follow the river north, to its source, you’ll come to the mountains. More specifically, to the forest at the base of those mountains. Keep going, and you’ll reach a waterfall—and, of course, a lake. The lake has a dock… and likely, a rowboat. Do not take the rowboat, though you may be tempted. Instead, pour the contents of this vial into the lake.

“When that is done, make camp by the lake. You may drink from it, but do not bathe in it. Go further down the river for that—past the ring of trees surrounding the area. You shouldn’t have to stay for long. No more than three days. Eventually, you will see a unicorn. Do not worry about missing it. Its presence will wake you up.

“Do nothing to it, unless it does something to you, first. If it speaks to you, those words are yours alone. If it lays its head in your lap, that moment is yours to keep. When it leaves, you are free to go as well.

“However, there are things I wish you to keep an eye out for. First, a white deer. Stag or doe, it matters not. Only that is pure white. Do not kill it, but if you see it, I wish to know about it when both you and I have returned.

“Second, the unicorn itself. I wish to know the color of its horn; whether or not it has any markings; and if it is alone or not.

“Lastly, the water. Tell me if there is anything built on the mound in the middle; if there is anything strange about the boat beyond the urge to get in it; whether anything happens when you pour the water in; and most importantly… whether or not you see anyone or anything inside the water during your time there. Even if you believe it is a hallucination.

“Am I clear?”

You blink, but nod.

“Excellent.” She pulls out a piece of paper, and she hands that to you as well. “These are the instructions I have just stated. Now. Tell me, knight. Will you do this?”

“Why?” you ask.

“A vested interest in magical ecology,” Muriel says primly.

The princess emerges, a bag slung over her shoulder. She approaches you both. Whatever she sees on your face has her smiling. “You’ve gone and confused the poor thing, Muriel. Are you allergic to explaining yourself?”

“Yes,” Muriel says. “You can’t see it, but my arms have broken out into terrible hives.”

The princess snorts, and looks at you. “The unicorn needs to be checked on. They’re quite rare, you know, and it’s good to make sure they’re still healthy. I imagine Muriel also wishes to know if it has made any friends, or reproduced.”

Muriel inclined her head.

“The lake has its own creatures within. They’re not friendly, so do not engage with them. They’ll drown you. The potion she’s given you is… highly magical. In this case, it does many things. It will… the closest I can think of is ‘get them drunk.’ They will still overpower you if you get in the water, but they won’t actively pursue you.

“It is also power enough to attract the unicorn, to ensure that you get a look at it. And, it has the added bonus of cleaning the water out a bit.” The princess shrugged. “An ingenious little vial.”

“And the deer?” you ask.

“Attracted to the presence of the unicorn,” the princess says. “Or perhaps caused by the unicorn’s own magic—I’ve never been quite sure. Either way, it means that the land there is responding to the presence of the unicorn. It’s a good thing. A very good thing.”

Muriel said you had a choice in this, but… the way they spoke, it sounded like you already decided to go. Which… you will, of course, because while this is not the quest you had envisioned for yourself, it still sounds important, and befitting of your training. They way they assume is a bit grating, but… Whatever. Your instructor had once told you that, of those who give you quests, magical folk rank just behind nobility in how grating they could be.

“Right then,” Muriel says, at your nod. “Time for the lot of us to be off. We’ve got things to do.”

You stand. “I still don’t quite understand who the two of you are,” you admit. There is more going on here than you understand—context that you’re lacking.

“We’re a Seer and a Witch,” Muriel says, as if this makes things plain. “A trickster and a truth-seer. A commoner and a princess.”

“We are what we are,” the princess says, laying a hand on Muriel’s arm. “And what we are works very well together. That is all that matters.”

“But… I mean… what do you do?”

“What needs doing,” the princess says. “Whether that is relocating unicorns, closing portals to the abyss, or removing curses.” She shrugs. “Don’t worry about it too much. Either it will become clearer to you one day… or it will not.”

“Then you mean to see me again?”

“Well, that depends on you, doesn’t it?” Muriel asks. “Whether you decide to work with me again.”

You suppose that’s true. You give a nod, and this time it is Muriel who smiles at you.

“Off we go, then,” she says.

The three of you exit the tower, and part ways at the door. You retrieve your things where you left them, and look on towards the horizon. It’s a long way from here to the river.

You shoulder your pack, and start walking.

Between 29th and Astoria: Cinder-Fucking-Ella

Chapter 6

The day sped by in a whirlwind of nervous energy. Lunch with Mr. Ren left butterflies in your stomach, creating excitement and energy as you buzzed around the office. Your mind kept drifting to the feeling of his warm hand against your lower back, and the way his eyes crinkled when you said something funny. Despite your interest in the man, a small voice would quietly remind you that you were just an assistant. Maybe Mr. Ren was only extending an olive branch, and you shouldn’t read too much into it. After all, logic would dictate that work would be a lot more productive if his assistant actually enjoyed her job.

Even if you weren’t working underneath the accomplished mogul, it wasn’t like someone like him would ever be interested in someone like you. Expectations ought to be managed. Sure, it was perfectly acceptable to harbor a small crush on your boss. But you couldn’t let it get away from you.

Yet, another more irrational side of you wished so badly that Mr. Ren would do something completely insane like ask you out.

As if.

By the time you got home, you had resigned yourself to simply admiring Kylo from afar. You really had no business going around falling in love with a billionaire. Toeing off your heels at the door, you were welcomed home with shrieks of laughter. The sounds of house filled to the brim in joy and friendship bounced against the white walls.

Rose was in the center of the living room sashaying around as she held a tulle skirt up to her chest. Finn and Poe were hooting as she pretending to wave and bow towards her adoring fans.

“What’s going on here guys?” You laughed while Poe rolled his wrists in circles as he hinged at the waist. Rose gave him a curtsey and then bounded your way. Clutching your hands in her own she shrieked, “We’re going to a ball! Like Cinder-fucking-ella!” Finn guffawed and shook his head. You collapsed onto the couch between the darker man and Poe, watching Rose as she continued to turn in circles around the room.

Poe laughed, “Close. Finn and I need dates for this yearly charity gala work makes us attend. We figured it would be more fun with our favorite gals. It’s held at the Lincoln Center, and its going to be amazing!” Finn cheered and leapt up to catch Rose in his arms. The pair began to waltz around the room as Rose sang the chorus to Beauty and Beast.

Stifling a laugh at Finn’s look of offense, you turned towards Poe. “Really? A gala? I don’t even know how to begin unpacking this.”

He reached over to the coffee table and uncorked a bottle of red wine. Shoving a full glass into your hands, he replied, “Drink this while I talk. Alright, the gala is on a Saturday so it doesn’t conflict with your work schedule. Next, Rose’s sister works at that stupidly fancy boutique on Fifth Ave., and she can get you guys some clothes at a steep discount. Lastly, you deserve this sweet pea. You need to take a break once in a while. Plus, there will be important people in the room to network with. I know you miss photography. This is New York City, babe. You never know what will happen!”

The man wiggled his eyebrows and continued, “At the very least there will be tons of free fancy pants food and champagne.”

“You really know the way to a girl’s heart, Poe.” Downing the rest of the wine, you gave him a sigh and a nod. Rose and Finn burst into claps before Rose climbed back onto the couch. Tossing her arms around you, she cheered, “I already texted Paige! We’re going to have a shopping party!”

Throwing your face into her arm you moaned, “Why is everything a party with you Ticos?”

Rose giggled and squeezed you tighter. “Because life is worth celebrating!”

Wednesday rolled around, and you found yourself impatiently tapping the leg of your desk with the side of your heel. Pinching the bridge of your nose, you reminded yourself that your friends were just being kind, and that you should be gracious at their generosity.

Side-eyeing your phone, you pulled up the conversation with Rose.

The address was pulled up on Google Maps and sat mocking you from the computer screen. Bergdorf Goodman. You needed to have a talk with Poe and Rose regarding using the words “fancy” and “boutique” lightly.

There was no way you could afford anything in that fucking department store. And knowing Poe and Rose, they probably worked out some scheme to get you decked out in the most expensive shit while paying the least.

Your heart was touched that Rose and Poe wanted to spoil you. But your pride was finding it hard to accept such an ostentatious gift. You continued to debate with yourself when a familiar baritone snapped you right back to reality.

“Bergdorf’s, huh? Finally getting that Chanel?”

Somehow you managed to clumsily close the tab while simultaneously swiveling around in your chair. Mr. Ren was leaning against the wall behind your chair. Hands in his pockets, his chest rumbled in laughter as he watched you panic.

“No! I mean, yes. But no, I’m not buying a Chanel. My - uhm - friend is taking me shopping though. I need...I mean it’s not really...”

You could see the headlines now - “Personal Assistant Launches Herself Out of Forty-Fifth Floor Window”. Kylo tilted his head and narrowed his eyes. Leveling his voice, he flatly ventured, “Your friend is taking you shopping. How generous of...him.”

You heard it. It was barely there, but you heard it. Mr. Ren was trying to suss out if a male was taking you on a shopping spree. As much as you wanted to tease the man, the prospect of keeping your job was a lot more enjoyable. Your voiced lamely squeaked, “Her. My roommate’s sister has an employee discount, and I need new clothes.”

His lip twitched upwards, as if the man was trying to suppress a smile. Looking downwards, he lightly tugged at the lapel of his jacket. Flattening the fabric against his chest, he nodded as he straightened the top.

“I see. Well, enjoy the shopping trip then. Feel free to leave at 5 today. There isn’t much work left.”

With that, the man turned on his heel and slinked back into his office. At the sound of the heavy oak doors closing, you let out a breath you didn’t even know you were holding.

This was unnecessary. This was so, so, so, unnecessary. You were perched atop a velvet Bergère that was more appropriate in the bedroom of an 18th century princess. Despite your general discomfort at being primped and fussed over, Paige had a disarming attitude about her that left you feeling less apprehensive about the whole ordeal.

Or maybe it was the fact that Rose had smartly plied you with three glasses of champagne before the styling session had begun.

Paige had just wrapped up going over measurements and jotting down ideas when an older gentleman stepped into the parlor. He discretely slipped a folded piece of paper to the woman before excusing himself.

Paige’s eyes twinkled and a mischievous smile spread across her delicate features. Tossing the piece of parchment aside, she sang, “Alright, I’m going to pull some garments. You ladies relax and enjoy some light bites while I’m gone.”

She blew a kiss, and skipped out the door. Judging by the boundless energy the sisters shared, you wondered if enthusiasm was genetic. Rose settled herself on the armrest and laid her head atop yours. She played with the hem of your sleeve as the two of you relaxed into friendly conversation.

“Hey, Rose?”

She hummed.

“Thanks. Seriously...for setting this up with Paige. It was really sweet of you guys, and I’m having fun. Really!”

Rose gave your shoulders a gentle squeeze. “Of course! You’re my best friend, and you deserve nothing but the best.”

Paige burst into the room with flourish as she dragged two racks along. Rose squealed at the sight of silk and feathers and immediately began to comb through the garments.

“Down, girl!” Paige teased as Rose gushed over the lush fabrics. You noticed that one of the racks was suspiciously fuller than the other. Paige caught you gaze and smiled. “Rose told me that you haven’t shopped for yourself in ages. I thought we could try on a few extra things just for fun.”

You cringed at your Banana Republic trousers. Did they do the job? Sure. Did you look good? That was up for debate.

Paige put on some upbeat electronic music, and the three of you began to go through outfits. You had a suspicion that Rose was only a decoy to get you comfortable with trying on expensive garments. The petite woman was certainly a lot more invested in what was going on your body, as opposed to her own.

“Oh my God. You need to try this on.” Rose screeched. She was holding up a black wool sweater dress with cut outs by the arm and a soft turtle neck.

You pulled the dress from her hands and took a look at it before screaming, “Rose! What am I going to do with a six hundred dollar sweater from Helmut Lang?!”

Oh no. The woman threw you her all and her best. Brown eyes cast wide open in innocence, she silently nudged you towards the dressing room. Relenting with a groan, you stomped away, but not before shouting over your shoulder, “I thought we were shopping for one dress. One!”

Your protests fell upon deaf ears. Once you emerged from the room, Rose and Paige immediately ganged up on you. They continued to ignore your objections (“No, Paige! Nobody in their right mind needs a $4,000 Akris wool coat!”), and piled outfit after outfit upon you.

One hour later, and you flopped onto your back to stare at the ceiling. Designer department store be damned, you’d make yourself right at home on their overpriced rug. Rose sat cross-legged by your face and massaged your arms.

“I’m sorry we love playing dress up so much,” Rose whispered as she gave up on your arms and began braiding your hair. You never had siblings growing up, so you were unaccustomed to the hustle and bustle that were the Tico sisters. Rolling onto your side, you propped your head up on one arm and replied, “It’s okay. I’m sorry if I’m being a sourpuss. I am having fun. I love you and Paige. It’s the reminder that I’m dirt poor that I’m not enjoying.”

Rose fluffed the ends of your hair and smiled. “Just one more dress, and we’ll be done. I promise.”

Just in time, Paige entered the room with a single black garment bag. Carefully unzipping it, she pulled a navy blue gown out. Inch-by-inch the crepe was revealed. The top was off-shoulder with crystal embellishments dotting the neckline in a floral motif. The bust featured beautiful drapes, and fell into a figure-hugging silhouette. A soft and delicate chiffon cape fell from the back and trailed along the floor.

Sitting up, you gasped, “Wow. That’s not for me, right?”

Paige reached a hand out to help you stand. She slowly eased you into the dress and carefully zipped up the side. You looked like a modern-day princess. How could something be so sexy and elegant at the same time?

Rose rushed to your side and began to coo alongside her sister. The three of you faced the mirror in awe. Fingers shaking, you tentatively reached underneath your arm to look at the price tag.

Paige immediately slapped your hand away. Eyes twinkling, the woman smirked, “That’s for me to know, and you to never find out.” Winking, she gingerly unzipped you and whisked the dress away alongside your very full rack of garments.

You began to protest, but the sisters would hear nothing of it. Thirty minutes later, and Paige returned with a mountain of bags and boxes neatly stacked together. She beckoned you towards a marble desk with a singular black box resting in the center.

“Paige. I don’t understand...”

She grinned and made playful eyes with her sister. Leaning forward, Paige whispered, “Before you came in, a VIP called and insisted that we outfit you in a new wardrobe. They already have an account with us, and insisted that we charge anything that looked good onto their card.”

Words escaped you as you turned to look at the ridiculous amount of clothing expertly packed away. “But...I didn’t even...”

Waving her hands, Paige laughed, “Don’t worry! I only picked practical things you’ll get use out of. I am a personal shopper, after all. I’d never send you home with something you’d hate!”

Mutely nodding, you mentally calculated just how much everything cost. You were pretty sure that there wasn’t a single garment in those bags underneath $500.

Holding up a finger, Paige caught your wandering eyes and motioned towards the black box. Pulling the lid off, she cautiously peeled back layer after layer of tissue paper to reveal leather hidden underneath.

A rectangular bag made of calfskin sat nestled in between paper. Pearls gracefully dotted the perimeter, and the middle featured tweed with classic quilting running across the bag.

Paige pulled the bag out, and pushed it into your shaking hands. She whispered, “Our VIP insisted that we choose a Chanel Boy Bag for you.”
