Javert: Prison and Desire.
Struggling to formulate this but here it is anyway, a mini essay. This is a very abridged version of some ideas that have been percolating in my mind.
I think something not often discussed is the effect being born and raised in a prison would have on Javertâs understanding of affection and love. I think a lot of Javertâs confusion over his desire for Jean Valjean come from his early experiences and upbringing.
Javertâs desire for Jean Valjean is often expressed through violent imagery: tigerâs claws and teeth -leaping to bite; a spider catching a fly in its web; a cat toying with a mouse in its claws. Javert struggles to process desire as something that can be tender or intimate. He struggles with gentleness and affection. This can even be seen in how when he finally realises and recognises his own desire for Jean Valjean it is considered a form of destruction or forced change: claws being made to unclench, ice being melted; or as a form of submission: a dog submitting to a master. For Javert desire can only be expressed by violent taking or through complete submission of oneself to another. The roots of this can be found in his childhood.
We see the effect of prison on Jean Valjean: it takes a normal, loving family man and turns him into a man capable of murder, a man who interacts with society and processes his emotions through bouts of anger and violence. Javert has experienced what changed a grown man into a potential murderer in his most formative years. We know from his pre-suicide letter that Javert spent sometime in a womanâs prison witnessing the abuse of female prisoners who were given more space between bars most likely in order to facilitate sexual favours that would be coerced from them by guards. It is highly likely that during his developmental years he witnessed acts of sexual violence alongside acts of generalised violence. His small skull is associated, during the period Hugo was writing, with childhood neglect as it was caused by a baby being left too long lying on their back. This suggests that he lacked motherly attention or affection. Not to say that his mother did not love him, but it is highly likely that due to her circumstance she would not have been able to give him the input required. This was common for many children of the poor, but combined with growing up in a hostile environment surrounded by violence, sexual violence, and the removal of freedoms as a punishment for non-compliance we can begin to understand how Javert might grow up to associate violence with desire or love.
Javertâs natural submission to authority, his ability to disappear, his acute observational skills, his unwillingness to criticise those in power, the correlation he makes between destruction of identity (giving up his career and leaving into obscurity) and punishment can all be tracked to his experiences in childhood. Javert has spent his formative years living in fear, learning to make himself small and becoming hyper aware of what is around him at all times to avoid abuse. This has left him a damaged and vulnerable individual with no solid sense of internal security. He has never had love or stability, he has been deprived of affection, and has lived in an environment of constant physical and psychological abuse. We know from modern studies that these things quite literally change the brain anatomy of children growing up in these conditions. For a newborn baby the earliest form of love is being fed by their mother, and so food comes to be one of the earliest forms of comfort. Javert was no doubt seeing sex traded for food and for safety from physical violence, hence it would formulate in his mind not to equate to love or emotional intimacy but as a form of currency. Affection too, feigning love or preference, a tool for survival. How, in these conditions, can we expect him to develop into a psychosexually healthy individual? Hugo states that Javert is a virgin and, although we know Hugo did this because of his weird hang-up about virgin= good person, we can suppose that Javertâs virginity stems from a deep-seated trauma associated with his development within a sexually violent environment. Â
Then, as young adult, Javert moved to working in male prisons. In France, during the 1800âs, prisons had some of the highest rates of recorded homosexuality in the country and it is likely that all throughout his career as a prison guard Javert was witnessing acts of sexual violence, or acts of consensual but unlikely to be safe sodomy. As he went through puberty he would have been only interacting with male/male acts of sexual violence. Whatever he might have felt would have been confused with fear and awareness of the inherent danger that existed within male/male sexual relationships in prison. Male/male sexual desire, although legal in France by the time of Les Mis, was still something considered morally reprehensible and as belonging in the underbelly of French social life. When Javert desires Jean Valjean, he desires him through the framework of violence because he has spent a lifetime witnessing sex as an act of violence or as a framework through which power and control can be expressed. He wants to have power over Jean Valjean- that is to say arrest him- and at the same time experiences this strange conflicting but also correlating desire to possess and âdevourâ âhis convict.â
When he finally recognises his desire for what it is, and detaches it from his desire to arrest Jean Valjean, his desire transmutes itself into a desire to submit. This is because, for Javert, submission has been his norm: one must submit to authority in order to survive it. When he sought to destroy Jean Valjean, he was secure in his understanding of male/male desire, when he realises what he desires is something more tender- a dog licking the intruders hand- he finds himself adrift unable to process his feelings. How can male/male desire be tender? How can it be loving? How can it mean devotion and choosing to submit in the understanding that you will be safe and unharmed? This is outside of Javertâs psychological vocabulary. This is also why Javert cannot understand Valjeanâs freeing of him at the barricade: authority means violence. Valjean has authority and chooses mercy. Javert has no previous experience with or understanding of love and so has no groundwork on which he can build. Valjean at least had familial love in his sister/mother figure, his father, and the love of his nieces and nephews, but how does one begin to approach loving another human being when they have lacked even that? Love is not a natural occurrence it is a learnt behaviour and one Javert has never been taught.
I think this is part of what I find so interesting about Javert, so often he is criticised for not living up to modern moral expectations and yet so little consideration is given to the traumatic circumstances that existed throughout his childhood and which formulated his rigid perspective of the world. How can one who has never experienced mercy be expected to know how to give it? How can one who has never been loved be able to offer it? Javert has lacked the basic structure of society and has learned to survive under tyrannical rule, that is not something so easily shucked off in adulthood. Despite leaving prison, prison never left Javert and it shapes every decision, every flaw and every fault he struggles with throughout his life.

Welcome back, coding enthusiasts! Today we'll talk about Git & Github , the must-know duo for any modern developer. Whether you're just starting out or need a refresher, this guide will walk you through everything from setup to intermediate-level use. Letâs jump in!
What is Git?
Git is a version control system. It helps you as a developer:
Track changes in your codebase, so if anything breaks, you can go back to a previous version. (Trust me, this happens more often than youâd think!)
Collaborate with others : whether you're working on a team project or contributing to an open-source repo, Git helps manage multiple versions of a project.
In short, Git allows you to work smarter, not harder. Developers who aren't familiar with the basics of Git? Letâs just say theyâre missing a key tool in their toolkit.
What is Github ?
GitHub is a web-based platform that uses Git for version control and collaboration. It provides an interface to manage your repositories, track bugs, request new features, and much more. Think of it as a place where your Git repositories live, and where real teamwork happens. You can collaborate, share your code, and contribute to other projects, all while keeping everything well-organized.
Git & Github : not the same thing !
Git is the tool you use to create repositories and manage code on your local machine while GitHub is the platform where you host those repositories and collaborate with others. You can also host Git repositories on other platforms like GitLab and BitBucket, but GitHub is the most popular.
Installing Git (Windows, Linux, and macOS Users)
You can go ahead and download Git for your platform from (git-scm.com)
Using Git
You can use Git either through the command line (Terminal) or through a GUI. However, as a developer, itâs highly recommended to learn the terminal approach. Why? Because itâs more efficient, and understanding the commands will give you a better grasp of how Git works under the hood.
GitWorkflow
Git operates in several key areas:
Working directory (on your local machine)
Staging area (where changes are prepared to be committed)
Local repository (stored in the hidden .git directory in your project)
Remote repository (the version of the project stored on GitHub or other hosting platforms)
Letâs look at the basic commands that move code between these areas:
git init: Initializes a Git repository in your project directory, creating the .git folder.
git add: Adds your files to the staging area, where theyâre prepared for committing.
git commit: Commits your staged files to your local repository.
git log: Shows the history of commits.
git push: Pushes your changes to the remote repository (like GitHub).
git pull: Pulls changes from the remote repository into your working directory.
git clone: Clones a remote repository to your local machine, maintaining the connection to the remote repo.
Branching and merging
When working in a team, itâs important to never mess up the main branch (often called master or main). This is the core of your project, and it's essential to keep it stable.
To do this, we branch out for new features or bug fixes. This way, you can make changes without affecting the main project until youâre ready to merge. Only merge your work back into the main branch once you're confident that itâs ready to go.
Getting Started: From Installation to Intermediate
Now, letâs go step-by-step through the process of using Git and GitHub from installation to pushing your first project.
Configuring Git
After installing Git, youâll need to tell Git your name and email. This helps Git keep track of who made each change. To do this, run:
Master vs. Main Branch
By default, Git used to name the default branch master, but GitHub switched it to main for inclusivity reasons. To avoid confusion, check your default branch:
Pushing Changes to GitHub
Letâs go through an example of pushing your changes to GitHub.
First, initialize Git in your project directory:
Then to get the âuntracked filesâ , the files that we havenât added yet to our staging area , we run the command
Now that youâve guessed it weâre gonna run the git add command , you can add your files individually by running git add name or all at once like I did here
And finally it's time to commit our file to the local repository
Now, create a new repository on GitHub (itâs easy , just follow these instructions along with me)
Assuming you already created your github account youâll go to this link and change username by your actual username : https://github.com/username?tab=repositories , then follow these instructions :
You can add a name and choose wether you repo can be public or private for now and forget about everything else for now.
Once your repository created on github , youâll get this :
As you mightâve noticed, weâve already run all these commands , all whatâs left for us to do is to push our files from our local repository to our remote repository , so letâs go ahead and do that
And just like this we have successfully pushed our files to the remote repository
Here, you can see the default branch main, the total number of branches, your latest commit message along with how long ago it was made, and the number of commits you've made on that branch.
Now what is a Readme file ?
A README file is a markdown file where you can add any relevant information about your code or the specific functionality in a particular branchâsince each branch can have its own README.
It also serves as a guide for anyone who clones your repository, showing them exactly how to use it.
You can add a README from this button:
Or, you can create it using a command and push it manually:
But for the sake of demonstrating how to pull content from a remote repository, weâre going with the first option:
Once thatâs done, it gets added to the repository just like any other fileâwith a commit message and timestamp.
However, the README file isnât on my local machine yet, so Iâll run the git pull command:
Now everything is up to date. And this is just the tiniest example of how you can pull content from your remote repository.
What is .gitignore file ?
Sometimes, you donât want to push everything to GitHubâespecially sensitive files like environment variables or API keys. These shouldnât be shared publicly. In fact, GitHub might even send you a warning email if you do:
To avoid this, you should create a .gitignore file, like this:
Any file listed in .gitignore will not be pushed to GitHub. So youâre all set!
Cloning
When you want to copy a GitHub repository to your local machine (aka "clone" it), you have two main options:
Clone using HTTPS: This is the most straightforward method. You just copy the HTTPS link from GitHub and run:
It's simple, doesnât require extra setup, and works well for most users. But each time you push or pull, GitHub may ask for your username and password (or personal access token if you've enabled 2FA).
But if you wanna clone using ssh , youâll need to know a bit more about ssh keys , so letâs talk about that.
Clone using SSH (Secure Shell): This method uses SSH keys for authentication. Once set up, itâs more secure and doesn't prompt you for credentials every time. Here's how it works:
So what is an SSH key, actually?
Think of SSH keys as a digital handshake between your computer and GitHub.
Your computer generates a key pair:
A private key (stored safely on your machine)
A public key (shared with GitHub)
When you try to access GitHub via SSH, GitHub checks if the public key you've registered matches the private key on your machine.
If they match, you're in â no password prompts needed.
Steps to set up SSH with GitHub:
Generate your SSH key:
2. Start the SSH agent and add your key:
3. Copy your public key:
Then copy the output to your clipboard.
Add it to your GitHub account:
Go to GitHub â Settings â SSH and GPG keys
Click New SSH key
Paste your public key and save.
5. Now you'll be able to clone using SSH like this:
From now on, any interaction with GitHub over SSH will just work â no password typing, just smooth encrypted magic.
And there you have it ! Until next time â happy coding, and may your merges always be conflict-free! âšđ©âđ»đšâđ»

I need Chat GPT eradicated with a laser and all traces of it incinerated from this earth, there are so many fucking reasons why genAI is terrible but in this post I wanted to talk a bit about my biggest personal issue: students using it in school.
Ok so, my school is a so called iPad schule in Germany, meaning we use iPads instead of physical notebooks and preferably (sadly not always) digital books. (The fact we donât get the books digitally is a whole other thing i can rant about but not the point of this post) But having a device that is connected to the world wide web in class is obviously a double edged sword.
On one hand there are teachers who encourage us to look up things and make class slightly more interactive in a modern way, but on the other hand there are many teachers who donât know how to regulate the use of the iPads at school resulting in students; in my opinion best case scenario playing random games, or worst case scenario using ChatGPT to do all the work.
Our Teachers have tools to supervise what we are doing on our iPads when we are at school but a lot of teachers donât use it for some reason. Hence why a lot of students are using genAI to do anything and everything, and it pisses me the fuck off.
Not only because these students;1. Donât get caught often, practically never
2. Because the AI shit they read aloud mindlessly when needed or copy into handwriting to make it seem like they wrote it sounds good (doesnât mean itâs correct but ChatGPT is capable of basic grammar sadly) they get graded well and praised for work they didnât even do (usually when they donât get caught).
And 3. The accomplishments and work of students who donât use genAI in class doesnât get as much attention from the teacher or just gets compared to something an AI has spat out. And that is fucking horrific and disgusting and sucks any motivation you have to do well in school without fucking AI. There are some teachers who even sadly expect it at this point that most students are just parroting AI instead of actually working themselves! What the fuck!
(Also a reason why teachers shouldnât be fucking surprised now a days when we all have bad grades if this is how their classes look.)
And I, on a whole personal level find this situation my school has found itself in just deeply disappointing and outraging. Because school is supposed to be a place where developing people learn how to learn, learn basic knowledge of things, learn a work ethic for the future, whatever their future might hold.
And yeah that takes work and is exhausting. I have 14 subjects this year and it is so so exhausting. But just because school is tiring and the whole education system needs a complete overhaul from the ground up, I wonât give into genAI. I know this might sound like I am on a high horse, but the one thing the school system does right is teach kids how to think for themselves. And that is exactly what the use of ChatGPT in schools removes. And that is so fucked up to me.
I donât have a satisfying end to this post, it just makes me so upset that apparently itâs totally socially acceptable in school now to literally not think for yourself, because that is too much work. HUH???
Sometimes the solution is to pop an energy drink late at night and study through, rather then to use genAI, at least I know I learned and tried to understand something myself and maybe because of that, the knowledge will stick with me instead of cheaply using genAI and not learning anything and also polluting the planet.
#redâs nightly ramble#fuck AI#like actually burn it#FUCK AI SO MUCH#FUCK CHATGPT#FUCK GENAI#FUCK GENERATIVE AI#I HATE IT SO SO MUCH#school#technically even#german stuff#i wont call this a vent post because i also want to generally inform you all that the situation is so shit#this got so long geez

By Tamino Dreisam
The World Socialist Web Site previously described Germanyâs 2025 federal budget as a âwar budget dictated by capital.â While billions are being spent on armaments and arms packages for Ukraine and Israel, vast cuts are being made to health and social services, including the planned cancellation of epidemic wastewater monitoring for COVID-19 and other pathogens.
The âWastewater Monitoring for Epidemiological Situation Assessmentâ (Amelag) went into operation in 2022 and examines wastewater samples from up to 175 sewage treatment plants nationwide, searching for gene copies of coronaviruses on a weekly basis. Even if it is not possible to determine the exact incidence rate, Amelag provides information on whether the infection rate is growing or declining and where outbreaks are occurring. Waves of infection can also be recognised at an early stage.
Especially since the abolition of mandatory personal testing and all other coronavirus protection measures, wastewater monitoring is one of the most informative tools for determining the status of the pandemic. The planned abolition of this vital public health program illustrates the aggression and criminality with which the ruling class is enforcing the âforever COVIDâ policy. It not only spreads the lie that the pandemic is over, it also seeks to eliminate all data that proves the opposite.
Amelagâs federal funding expires at the end of the year and there are no plans to extend it. A spokesperson for Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (Social Democrat, SPD) confirmed: âUnfortunately, no funds for the continuation of wastewater surveillance could be included in the governmentâs draft federal budget for the time being.â Although attempts were being made âin the course of parliamentary deliberations to obtain funding for continuation,â it is quite clear that these are just empty phrases. In government questions in the Bundestag (parliament), Lauterbach attempted to shift the funding to the municipalities, which are already in debt as it stands. âThe federal government is not responsible for every sensible expenditure,â he explained.
Last year, Lauterbach announced the cancellation of funding for research into Long Covid and the development of therapies and medicines to combat it. The cut from âŹ100 million to âŹ21 million was justified with claims of a âtight budget situation.â He thus made it clear where this cancelled money was going: into military armaments, the only area of the budget to be significantly increased. With regard to the continued operation of Amelag, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) public health body explained that only âŹ5 million per year would be necessaryâthat is, 0.8 percent of the sum of Germanyâs most recent military support package for Ukraine.
A petition addressed to the Federal Ministry of Health on change.org under the title âStop the end of AMELAG! Germany needs modern epidemiologyâ already has over 4,500 signatures. It explains: âModern epidemiological surveillance is based on collecting data as quickly, comprehensively and unbureaucratically as possible. As the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic shows, modern surveillance systems are more necessary than ever in a globalised world affected by the overexploitation of natural resources.â The petition goes on to castigate the governmentâs abolition of all measures, noting, âContrary to the experience of modern medicine, for the first time in human history we are relying on individual responsibility to overcome a pandemic.â
Many signatories of the petition write in their explanatory statement that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over and that they themselves have already fallen ill with Long Covid.
Just how drastic the situation is, is also shown by the figures for the rising autumn coronavirus wave. According to the RKIâs latest weekly report on acute respiratory illnesses (ARI), 7.4 million people are currently suffering from acute respiratory diseasesâa particularly high level for this time of year. COVID-19 directly accounts for around 22 percent of these. However, it is quite clear that the unhindered spread of COVID in recent months and years has weakened the immune systems of millions of people. As a result, they also fall ill more easily with other forms of ARI.
COVID-19 currently accounts for 17 percent of the number of severe ARI cases, although there are clear age differences, with COVID-19 accounting for 30 percent of severe respiratory illnesses in the over-80 age group.
Wastewater levels of COVID have sharply increased since mid-September. Last week, 239,000 gene copies per litre of wastewater were measured, while in the previous week the figure was 185,000. The viral load has doubled in the last four weeks. According to GrippeWeb, which collects data on the incidence of infection based on information from a test group of volunteers, the estimated COVID incidence is currently around 1,100.
The number of hospitalisations is also rising slightly and now stands at a 7-day incidence of four hospitalisations per 100,000 inhabitants. The number of deaths rose to 129 last week, compared to around 80 per week in the previous weeks.
The dominant variant is currently KP.3.1.1, which accounts for 41 percent of infections. The recombinant sublines now account for 27 percent, with virologists estimating that XEC has around twice the growth advantage of KP.3.1.1 and will be the dominant variant in winter.
In the UK, British GP Helen Wall reported in a recent interview with the Manchester Evening News that she has observed a difference between XEC and previous infections in her practice. Anyone infected with this variant should be prepared to feel âknocked out.â She explained: âPrevious symptoms were more like cough and cold symptoms, but at the moment Covid seems to be really knocking people out.â
The long-term effects of COVID-19 are also being increasingly discussed. Broadcaster SWR recently published a report on the first anniversary of the post-COVID outpatient clinic in Mainz. The internist interviewed, Christoph Lembens, reports that more than 1,000 patients had already been treated in these twelve months. The appointment diary was still fully booked well into next spring.
Lembens estimates that around a fifth of his patients have not recovered from their COVID infections. This not only affects older people with previous illnesses, but also many younger people. Those affected suffer from exhaustion and fatigue. Some of them also have severe circulatory fluctuations, for example an extreme drop in blood pressure as soon as they stand up, which can lead to their simply falling over.
For many, it gets even worse: they may also have major muscular problems, so that some sufferers are dependent on a wheelchair. Many have cognitive impairments, including âbrain fog,â making it extremely difficult to concentrate or memorise things.
These reports illustrate the criminal nature of the ruling class âforever COVIDâ policy, which has condemned hundreds of millions globally to suffer long-term damage to their health so that profits continue to flow.

Since all parts of the project are managed by a single team, there is less chance for miscommunication or inconsistency in design. This results in a more polished final product that reflects the brandâs identity while providing an engaging experience for visitors.
Additionally, full service web design allows for customized solutions tailored to unique requirements. Whether you need an e-commerce platform, a portfolio site, or a blog, a full service provider will offer dedicated support and expert advice throughout the entire process, ensuring your vision comes to life exactly as you imagined.
Website service
In today's digital landscape, website service is essential for businesses to thrive and maintain an online presence. A well-structured website serves as a powerful tool that encourages customer engagement and drives sales. By investing in a comprehensive website service, businesses can ensure that their website not only looks great but also functions seamlessly across all devices.
A key aspect of website service is the ability to optimize for search engines. By implementing SEO best practices, businesses can enhance their visibility and attract more organic traffic. This is where a reliable website service provider plays a crucial role, as they possess the expertise and techniques necessary to elevate your search engine rankings.
Furthermore, ongoing support and maintenance are vital components of a reliable website service. As technology evolves and user needs change, having a team that can promptly address issues or updates will keep your website relevant and effective in reaching target audiences. This ongoing relationship is instrumental in achieving long-term success in the digital realm.
Responsive web design
Responsive web design is an essential aspect of modern web development that ensures a seamless user experience across a variety of devices. With the increasing use of smartphones and tablets, having a website that adapts to different screen sizes is not just a luxury but a necessity.
The core principle of responsive web design is fluidity. This means that the layout of your website adjusts dynamically based on the screen width, ensuring that content remains accessible and visually appealing regardless of the device used. This approach improves usability and can significantly boost conversion rates.
Incorporating responsive web design techniques involves using flexible grids, images, and CSS media queries. These elements work together to create a layout that responds gracefully to changes in screen size, making your website not only functional but also competitive in the digital marketplace.
Custom design services
In today's digital landscape, custom design services have emerged as a vital component of creating a strong online presence. Businesses understand that a one-size-fits-all approach does not cater to their unique needs and branding. Therefore, opting for custom design services allows them to differentiate themselves in a crowded market.
These services offer tailored solutions that resonate with a company's specifics, from colors to typography and layout. By leveraging custom design services, businesses can ensure that their websites not only reflect their brand identity but also provide an intuitive user experience. This is crucial for keeping visitors engaged and encouraging them to take the desired actions.
Investing in custom design services ultimately contributes to better customer satisfaction and improved conversion rates. With a website designed specifically for their target audience, businesses can more effectively communicate their message and achieve their goals. This bespoke approach is invaluable in today's competitive environment.

âFollow the moneyâ takes on a new meaning when the bloodhound is an algorithm-powered web crawling bot designed to drill through internal government firewalls and map out redundancy, waste, and longstanding hidden internal influence networks established over decades.
What am I talking about?
Algorithmic Corruption Mapping
To the best of my ability, I am describing a key part of the DOGE toolkit based on the fragments of information that have recently been made public. If I understand correctly, what has been developed is almost infinitely scalable and could be readily deployed by allied governments to root out corruption. DOGE appears to be engaged in a truly radical experiment in government spending transparency and accountability by applying modern information technology tools to a problem set long believed to be intractable.
We will probably learn more during the DOGE Super Bowl commercial airing soon.
But before we go further down this particular rabbit hole, please take a moment to listen to Mike Benz describe the USAID disinformation program:

love modern game development. the dev tools require a web login. all of meta's web services have gone down for some reason. so I have to use a third party program (Sidequest) to simply install an APK that I built on the headset sitting next to me. this is a reasonable way to do things right

It's fascinating seeing people go "I miss the wild west era of the internet" and then learn they were born in 2003
Like fuck off. By the time you're 6 it was dead. The cutoff is around 06/7, and even that's debateable to have ended earlier
If we're being brutally honest-
1993-1998: True Wild West. Not much could happen due to limited tech, but it was completely unmonitored. I'm honestly surprised to find archives of old chats on Google
1998: The Coppa act is established, further taking effect in 2000. This made people aware that kids can access the internet. Teens barely gave a shit, though it made corporations more aware of them, and how to consider them for a market. It also unfortunately promoted age fraud to access barred login sites
1999-2005/6: User oriented era. This is when a lot of custom sites, blogs, and forums popped up, as well as many image hosting sites that are sadly defunct now. Google being a popular search engine further encouraged discovering these user made sites. Contrary to popular belief, user sites were mostly made and "moderated" by edgy kids and teens, so you WILL see the opinion of a 14yr old. Incidentally, due to domains being expensive, a lot of these teen made forums and personal sites died extremely fast, ignoring raids, doxxing, and flamewars
Video sharing while possible also was really crappy for quality...except for
User created flash games and anims enabled a massive spread of content. Newgrounds was a popular hosting spot. Shame Flash died
Outside that, we least we got bbphp as a solid forum template be popularized after many other ones died. For those less tech savvy, in 2003
We got social media. This was the main goto till smartphones and Twitter got popularized after 2006, and still was going strong until mid 2010s. Despite older netiquette of being encouraged to not post anything indentifiable about yourself, many users expressed themselves with music tastes and eventual personal blogs
2005/6: YouTube is released, as well as Dailymotion. Bootlegged Newgrounds anims popped up for uploads, but also shared tv show clips
Fun thing, before mid 2010s, users can only upload at max 15min of video
Similarly around 2005, Reddit similarly sparked up. More modern image hosting sites spurred around 2007/8
~~~
But regardless, the public internet already changed massively after 2000. Web 2.0 was already a term from 1999 that described the change, with it being redefined for it occuring around 2004. I think one thing not noticed, the development of this tech mostly happened in the UK, due to general smaller population and faster telocommunication services compared to the US at the time. This similar impacted the type of audience that used this
I see people longing for a freer internet, and I agree online corporate control is shitty. But the dretches of humanity has severely stunted user diversity and interest, same with over prioritizing skill over general good collaboration and behavior. The modern tech bro absolutely not giving a shit for the userbase or societal problems and being very selfish can unfortunately be traced here. Same for rsmpant political misinformation being unmoderated, and early 90s fandom woes still having a negative impact on some franchises
I see dumbass self censoring like "unalive" on sites, and it's not even enforced. It's just stupid assumption that advertisors care so much
Which brings the question, why are we trying to heavily get into monetizing expression? I genuinely feel Ytube enabling users to do so is exactly why user content got obnoxious after 2013 when it got popular. Unfortunately it's way too late to undo that. Many rely on the monetizing
Though I find it funny when people ignore just...making their own site to bypass the censorship. bbphp again is open source, and there are many other online web creation tools. I can't even say the rise of tech illiteracy is why, tech illiterate people aren't the ones complaining of sites crapping out
Anyway, if you miss pre algorithm search engines results leading to you finding random shit, try this;
Unfortunately the reducing of child safe sites is another convo
Funding FujoCoded: Stretch Goals!
Itâs time! With our first goal met (đ thank you!), letâs talk about stretch goals. We have quite a few planned, so we're going to go through them one by one and explain what they are and why we chose them!
Before we go down the list, here's something fun:
Sticker Unlock: At 45 backers, we also unlocked one more sticker!
The goal of our campaign is to cover business expenses most of all. The unlocked content is an extra token of gratitude for your support that also helps us meet our own targets!Â
With that said, let's get to our stretch goals...
$4,000: "That's Why I Ship On Company Time" Ao3 Sticker
At $4,000 we'll unlock one more sticker design that you can add to your collection!Â
Our first version of this "shipping" sticker features VSCode and a terminal, but there's more than one type of shipping... here's to the other one!
$5,000: "Using NPM with Javascript" Article
Next up, we have our first article. Our plan is to add an Articles section to @fujowebdev where we'll collect simple, free guides to help beginners get past the roadblocks we see them encounter!
This first one will cover the basics of NPM, a core element of modern JavaScript!
"How do I install this JavaScript library? How do I run this open source JavaScript project? How can I get started creating my blog using a tool like @astrodotbuild?" are some of the most common questions we get in our Fandom Coders server.Â
Let's give *everyone* the answer!
$6,000: Offering Website Art Prints
Next up, we'll turn the excellent art on our website into prints! These will be (probably) 8x10-sized art prints that will look amazing without breaking the bank. Full specs soon!
...and speaking of the site, you have tried moving the windows, right?
$7,000: "Catching Up With Terminal" Article
Next, another common issue for beginner developers: how to start learning how to handle the Terminal.
This will require some research to determine the major roadblocks, which is how our project operates: active learning from those going through it all!
$8,000: "Crucial Confrontations" Article
And last (for now), something very dear to us: an article extracting some wisdom from the book "Crucial Confrontations": https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Confrontations-Resolving-Promises-Expectations/dp/0071446524
This may seem like an unusual choice, but it highlights how our teaching goals go beyond programming to cover collaboration!
After years of working within our community, we repeatedly found that developing effective communication and confrontation skills helps our collaborators thrive. Unfortunately, the world doesn't teach us how to effectively (but kindly) hold each other accountable.
Some of our most involved collaborators have read this book and found the tools within it transformative. Given this experience, we deeply believe that making some of this wisdom easily accessible (without having to read the full book) will allow all of us to collaborate better!
If we can reach $8,000, this will enable us to test this hypothesis and learn how teaching soft skills beyond programming influences what we're able to achieve! It's a bold idea, but we're excited to see how it turns out in practice.
Help us make it there!
And that's all...for now!
If you want to hop on Twitch right now, you can join us as we put some extra polish on our shiny new FujoCoded website.
And remember, you can back our campaign here to help us achieve these goals and more:
