just finished www #23: on your way, and i have many thoughts. all of them make me want to cry.
ame knowing as soon as she got back to the cottage that her actions had burned a bridge, not just with the citadel but with one of her best friends, and yet still needing to complete her tasks as the witch of the world's heart. the spirits she awakens so as not to leave the cottage untended or unprotected, and the way she asks and does not take. the note she leaves, should her friends make it there.
eursulon in the fire, followed by the man in black, who is a brother in the way all spirits are brethren, but not the sibling eursulon seeks. leaving through the burrow, fighting monstrosities, and seeing the citadel raze cities to ruin beside a jungle of rot. finding the tree. his tree. the tree that is emblazoned on his shield, his coat of arms, what he fights to protect. and inside... his sister. a family she made for herself.
and suvi. hurt but still afraid that ame will die if she stays. determined to not let that happen. conversations with steel where she says that another wizard said that the wizard sly lied, or did not tell the full truth. commiseration, but suvi holds back the full truth, and suspects steel of doing the same. an airship to fly north. to protect ame, yes. but the mage armor mean that no creature or spirit or witch will ever be able to touch her again. broken trust, if not broken love.
and through it all, the thread that the citadel represents a threat to the world's heart itself, and to all spirits beyond. the council of elders wishes to neutralize that threat. grandmother wren did not.
questions moving forward: what is the true purpose of the war on gaothmai being waged by the empire? why does kalaya's family look like suvi? is suvi going to have a villain arc? i have my theories, but i'll get into those in other posts.
thank you to the worlds beyond number cast and crew for giving us this incredible story. i'm so excited to see where you take us next.

Okay, I'm at the point where I'm all kinds of conflicted
Like, it's not Suvi's fault. Of course she was going to go along with it. The circumstances could not be more perfectly set up for her compliance
And I also understand why the Citadel/Steel would try to pull something! Don't get me wrong, I still think throwing a Geas into this is Crazy but yes, it makes sense they would try and get some intelligence out of this conclave
But looking from a birds eye view, I'm just going insane. What do you mean the Citadel is throwing in a secret mission to plant a music box (with a hyper-specific trigger) that does who knows what within the sanctum of a witch they know basically nothing about. They have no idea about what the situation is, what defenses she has, or the scale of what they're trying to get a toe into! (& neither do we really) This has every opportunity to turn into a trainwreck, and the trio are right in the line of fire.

So all the other older sisters are crying at WBN 23 tonight, right? We're feeling normal levels of being seen by a D&D show, for sure.

I cannot begin to explain how emotional I am that Brennan and Taylor are more or less subtly giving Lou/Eursulon the whole chivalrous knight experience.
The quest for honour, the pauldron, the magical sword, the shield, a family to find and protect and love and yearn for on his adventures, and now the beautiful white stallion....
We get it, it's a love letter to Lou and his incredible playing and choices and it's making me cry okay

"it is the realm beyond, and between, and through, and past the world"
since the release of the character playlists, and the rain road in the arc 1 finale my brain has been absolutely spinning about musicality in the wizard, the witch, and the wild one. and the relationship between music and the spirit realm, and then how that intersects with umora.
because since the beginning there has been this emphasis between the world of spirits and music. eursulon's theme, when we first meet him, before he crosses over, is this beautiful choral music—the first time we hear singing in the show. and then there is your honey is quiet, honey with a note of song. the first diegetic song we hear performed, is sung to honour the spirits.
(edit: eursulon’s breath!!! the thing that brings him back to himself, after it had been lost!!!!)
so i have the rain road on repeat and i'm re-listening to fireside chats and in the one for the first episode brennan describes the world of spirit by saying "it is the world beyond, and between, and through, and past the world" and it reminded me of the scoring. we hear the stories of umora, but beyond, between, through, and past the world; surrounding it, but separate from it is the score. (making me feel like us, the audience, is sitting and existing in the spirit realm. and if it is supernal, if it is what is beyond and between and through and past the world— aren't we?)
but that called to mind eursulon's character playlist, and how it, especially in it's representations of eursulon's early journey, was so instrumental. and that led me to ponder the intersection of music and language. how young eursulon's theme was choral but not lyrical.
the structure of language is the domain of umora.
and how that intersects interestingly with what we have seen of the lingua arcana. suvi's rhythmic somatic components. reflexive indicative and null clef alluding to the structure of grammar and music theory.
and then how the rain road is choral and lyrical, together. the first breaking of that line between the score and the world. connecting, like ame does.
and that is why in the wizard the witch and the wild one ame is a meta narrative representation of musical theatre. in this essay i will—

Now that all four character playlists are out, I’d like to formally congratulate Aabria Iyengar, Brennan Lee Mulligan, Erika Ishii, and Lou Wilson on their impeccable taste in music
Edit: An important update because Taylor Moore, perhaps unsurprisingly, ALSO has impeccable taste

I started listening to Worlds Beyond Number and it's so good. I listened to the preludes and I'm about halfway through episode 1 (and trying to figure out the best point to subscribe and listen to the Children's Adventure) and it's so different and immersive. Absolutely perfect cast and I knew it was going to be something special when I saw everyone on here losing it over the sound design and THEY WERE RIGHT.
Also just works as a very large reminder that I love Aabria Iyengar.
