nature doc narrator just described a snake's failed hunt as 'leaving empty handed' and that just makes me laugh like dawg of all the metaphors. why that one.

Pangolin: Kulu's Journey
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
Pangolin: Kulu's Journey (2025, UK/South Africa)
Director: Pippa Ehrlich
Mini-review:
I ran to watch this as soon as I found out it was made by one of of the directors of the wonderful My Octopus Teacher. And, once again, we got an unforgettable documentary, this time about an animal as rare and mystifying as the pangolin. You can't help but root for Kulu and his caretaker, Gareth, throughout the entire rewilding process. But the documentary also takes the time to showcase other animals and their surroundings, eventually turning into a sort of call to protect the environment and endangered species. I will continue to follow Pippa Ehrlich's career, but for now I can surely recommend Pangolin: Kulu's Journey to anyone who loves wildlife and animal documentaries.

My roommate and I were talking about our favorite fandoms and she rated Planet of the Apes in my top three fandoms. I love POTA but didn't think it was that high.
Me: You think I love POTA that much?
Roomie: You watched 13 seasons of an ape rescue TV show because you wanted to learn more about chimps!
Me: Actually that show, Monkey Life was 16 seasons long...

I love when nature docs do that thing where they constantly insist that certain animals are inherently gross and awful even when they’re just living their lives
we can’t just show hyena family life and the little babies. we gotta stress that we think the adults are ugly

"Actually, we are worrying unduly," said the Chair of Indefinite Studies. "Sharks have a very undeserved reputation as man-eaters. There is not a single authenticated case of a shark attacking anyone, despite what you may have heard. They are sophisticated and peaceful creatures with a rich family life and, far from being ominous harbingers of doom, have reputedly even befriended the occasional lost traveler. As hunters they are of course very efficient, and a full-grown shark can bring down even a moose with...er..."
He looked at their faces.
"Er...I think I might perhaps have got them confused with wolves," he mumbled. "I have, haven't I?"
They nodded, in unison.
"Er...sharks are the other ones, aren't they?" he went on. "The vicious and merciless killers of the sea that don't even stop to chew?"
They nodded again.
"Oh dear. Where can I put my face...?"
"Some distance from a shark," said Ridcully briskly.
