Your dad didn’t even leave you a choice.— You had to say yes.
You were actually supposed to spend the summer with your aunt in Los Angeles, but it seemed like your dad had better plans for you.
Plans you definitely didn’t like.
Instead, you found yourself being dragged to a Basketball summer camp, which he called “Riverside B. Camp.” an hour outside the city, where your dad has been coaching for years.
“This will be good for you. You need some fresh air, not spending the whole summer in the city!” Your dad said, dragging you to the car.
“I don’t want this! I don’t even like basketball.”
“Maybe this will make you like it.”
“You annoy me so much!”
“Well of course, i’m your dad.”
What your dad really meant was that he missed you, and he didn’t actually know how to ask you to spend some time with him.
You didn’t like basketball, but you were your dad’s daughter. You grew up watching basketball, so it was easy for you to tell who was good, who was bad, who had potential to be a better player, and if you didn’t like someone’s game at all, it was over.
You had like 3 hours to pack your things, just so you could spend three months surrounded by horny teenage boys.
Actually that was a problem, teenage boys.
You were going to be the only teenage girl in camp, and to be honest you weren’t unattractive at all, so that means only one thing: hell.

Dalton arrived late on the first day. The big bag over his shoulder, white crocs and headphones on. “Another one.” You thought.
He didn’t notice you first. And you didn’t want him to either.
Until you called him out during a defense play for not boxing out the biggest player. “You be acting so tuff when you ball but no defense at all.”
He laughed. “Yeah right. Who are you?”
“I’m the coach’s daughter.”
“Oh.” he said, smirking. “You’ll make me better then.”
You laughed, looking at his big blue eyes. Oh, he was hot.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
You found yourself looking for him every time you could. Between drills, lunch breaks, evenings by the lake, morning walks.
He wasn’t actually who you expected him to be. He was from North Dakota, from a small town where the only existing basketball team was from his high-school. He lived with only his mother, and he was the first in his family to achieve something. The first one to have the privilege of making college decisions.
He also learned that you weren’t just “The coach’s daughter.” You were a senior in a prestigious high-school, already committed to UCLA because that’s where your soul belonged to. He knew you struggled with high expectations and pressure.
“Stop studying, it’s summer.”
“Gotta keep my dad proud.”
He pouted at you. “I’m pretty sure you already do.”
He looked at you, like you were the only person in the world that could make him say nice things about someone.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
You were different for him. You weren’t trying to get his attention as every other girl did, you weren’t impressed by his reputation, by his dribbling skills or by his half-court shots.
In fact, you were really blunt.— The kind of girl who told him to dribble faster and screamed “Pussy.” when he missed his free throws.
There was one night, a full moon. You sat by the lake, just looking at the sky as if it was your home, wrapped in an old wnba hoodie, arms resting on your knees.
You didn’t see him at first, but he sat next to you.
You flinched when you saw him, not expecting it. He didn’t say much, just sat looking at the sky the same way you did.
“Full moon nights are my favorite.” he says.
You looked at him in disbelief.
“Really? mine’s too.”
He looked at you, with a soft smile. “Yeah. Everything feels surreal when the moon is up, is like the world belongs to her.”
You looked at him and smiled as softly as you could, your chest aching.
A big silence fell, it was good.
He looked up at the sky again. “The same way i think i belong to you.”
You blinked without saying a thing, you didn’t want to ruin the moment.
Instead, you rested your head in his shoulder, softly enough to hear him sigh.
You wanted to kiss him. But not yet, you weren’t ready.
But something changed that night.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
After that night, you started seeing each other more. Intentionally, of course.
He found a lot of excuses to help you study even if he didn’t know a thing about it, and you stayed late to watch him shoot alone in the gym after lights-out.
You learned he wasn’t cocky, just a guy who achieved more than everyone around him, and he was proud of himself. You learned he kept a wristband that once belonged to his dad, the dad he never met. That he sometimes felt like basketball was the only thing separating him from being dumb.
He learned how awful your dad makes you feel every time you get an A-. And how disappointed your dad was of you for not playing a sport.
And still, you didn’t kiss.
There was tension. The brush of his arm near yours when you walked side by side, his knee always touching you under the lunch table, the moment you tripped over a cone during practice and he carried you to the bench to make sure you were okay.—hands on your waist a little to long.
You weren’t sure what scared you more, getting a B, or your dad finding out.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
Practice lasted longer than expected. Campers scattered to cabins, and your dad gone to take a call in the admin building. You stayed behind to grab the bottles of Gatorade the other players left.
You didn’t expect Dalton to be there.
He was on the bench in the locker room. Changing to comfier clothes, He smelled like sweat, soap and desire.
You stepped inside the locker room to grab the towels, when you saw him.
“Hey, you’re okay? Didn’t expect anyone here.”
He looked up, tired but smiling for you as always. “I’ve been better, i guess.”
You sat beside him, in silence.
“I hate this.” He confessed.
“Hate what?”
“This.” He looked at you. “Having to pretend i don’t want you wearing my jersey.”
Your heart pounded. “Dalton…”
“I know you feel the same way Y/N.”
“Yeah, i do.”
“Let’s stop pretending.” He said, his eyes shining.
He reached up to tuck a strand of your hair behind your ear, you leaned in without thinking twice.
The space between you disappeared. The kiss was slow, filled with desire and love, no lust in it.
His hands cradled to your face, as if he was holding something breakable. You kissed him back, grabbing his hair to feel him closer.
You forgot about school, the camp, or your dad.
Until the door cracked open.
You pulled away, eyes wide.
There he was, your raiser.
He stood in the doorway. A silence fell so loud it swallowed your fast heartbeats.
He looked away. “Out. Both of you. Now.”
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
You stood outside your father’s office. Your heart pounding because inside Dalton stood alone.
“You have a minute,–” your dad said, voice rough. “To explain what the hell i just walked in on.”
Dalton didn’t flinch, even if he wanted to. “I kissed her.”
Your dad’s jaw tightened.
“Because i’m in love with her.” He ended.
“She’s my daughter.” Your dad said.
“I know. That’s why i’m standing here, not running away or making excuses.”
Your dad stepped closer, arms crossed. “You’re a kid, just eighteen.” he sighed. “You think a summer romance gives you the right to say you love my daughter?”
Dalton sighed. “It’s not just a summer. I didn’t want this, i came here to get better, to grow up. This was supposed to be a boys camp.” He swallowed. “But then i met her. And she’s a dream.”
Dalton paused.
“She doesn’t care about the game, not as everyone else does. She looks at me like i’m more than just how many points i score, when i’m with her i don’t feel like a waste.”
Your dad’s eyes narrowed.
“And so what, you fall in love, kiss her in my locker room and you think that means something?”
Dalton straightened his back. “Yes, sir. It does.”
And he said it.
“I know it’s early, and i know i have to prove a lot to you, but i will. I don’t want to just date your daughter, i want to marry her, sir.”
The words hung there.
Your dad’s expression didn’t change. “You don’t know what the fuck you’re saying.” He raised his voice. “Marriage? at your age? you don’t even know who you are.”
Dalton nodded. “I know, but i already know her. And i want to spend the next ten years proving to everyone that i keep my word.” he smiled softly. “I just want you to understand i’m serious. About her, about all of it.”
Your dad looked toward the door, and opened it to let you in.
You entered the room, the air felt thick.
“When i met her mother–” He sighed. “I felt the same way, i said the same words you said. And i fought everyone for her.” he smiled. “Her mother and I been standing between this girl and the whole world since.”
“I’m not going anywhere, coach.” Dalton said.
“If you really want to be with her. You have to earn it, not just with stupid words. With actions. You have to win my respect and show me you can lead without ego.”
“Yes, sir.” He nodded.
Your eyes flicked between your dad and Dalton. You stepped closer to Dalton.
“Fuck, i hate this.” your dad said. “But i respect the balls he had for talking to me like that.”
You looked up to Dalton and smiled.
You opened your mouth to speak, but your dad stopped you.
“Don’t say anything, he already said everything.”
And then he left, leaving you two alone.
Dalton walked you to your cabin, he didn’t say anything else after the conversation with your dad.
He grabbed your hand, and looked down at you. “I hope you still want to kiss me.”
“A thousand times if i could.” you answered.
And under the waxing crescent moon and the weight of everything unspoken, you kissed him again. But this time, as if you already had a ring on your finger.
