What's a good cyberpunk RPG with magic/similar powers? Like Shadowrun if that system was good. I want samurai swording, hacking, and spell casting to all be valid character options. Thanks!
THEME: Cyberpunk with Magic
Hello friend! I have a little bit of a range with the options here, some more focused on combat, others more focused on vibes. I hope you find something you like!
Morbo's Catastrophic Sanctuary, by kumada1.
It is the year 2149, and earth’s temperature has stabilized. Thanks to a network of geosynchronous atmosphere control satellites, the tumult of the Climate Era has ended and humanity’s cities have begun to sink back into their normal routines.
Risen Cairo is a metropolis in three layers, built on the banks of the Nile Ocean. Its upper plate is resplendent with solar collectors and mansions overgrown with greenery. Its middle plate houses its working class and plumes with the smoke of its industry. And its lower plate contains those who have not fully integrated into society---late refugees from the Climate Era, or those whose fortunes have tumbled them down onto the lowermost economic rung.
Society is mostly peaceful, with football and airskiff racing being at the top of the news cycle.
Nevertheless, from the shadows, a presence looms.
All this tranquility is bad for business.
Morbo's Catastrophic Sanctuary appears to have both cybernetics and magic, based on the review and comments on the store page. The game is a classless OSR Mork-Borg hack, so I'm assuming character progression is very much up to you as a player, allowing you to pull from a variety of options to create a unique character that fits your interests. What's unique about this game appears to be your Behinder, a unique element of supernatural power special to your character, so I'm assuming that all of your characters will have some form of magic, along with some way of kicking ass.
Threnodyssey, by Superclaymation.
Clock in. Connect phylactery. Log on. Initiate curse ritual. Adjust necro-sync. Launch steel coffin. Bring NECRONAUTS online. Harvest oil. Destroy our enemies. Repair. Resurrect. Repeat. Reward. DEATH IS FLEETING, OIL IS ETERNAL.
A rules-lite customize-heavy 28mm miniatures skirmish game about unending corporate war…with skeletons.
Tactical fans unite! Threnodyssey is for the war-gamer at your table, with magic powers and high-tech equipment part of each faction your players control at the table. The idea of the game is that each player is a high-tech necromancer working for a highly competitive corporation. If you're looking to test your strategy with a cyberpunk flair, this is the game for you. However, if you're more interested in the themes of rebellion, maybe sit this one out.
CRAWLERS 24XX, by tibbius
The hour is late. The sky is dark. A hard rain falls on the weak.
Govcorp rations out education, medicine, magic, and tech to the favored ones. The rest of you have to subsist on odd jobs. Androids, trolls, and the unliving grind out their time in menial roles, constrained by myriad arcane restrictions on their movement, speech, and behavior. Unlicensed witches are subject to burning, and a witch registration is very expensive to get. The only real freedom is the anonymity of the net, but even there Govcorp dominates with advertising and intrusive tracking. You're always just one step ahead of them, you think. But it's hard to be sure. Are they just waiting to trip you up?
Take the roles of revolutionaries, quiet or loud, trying to effect improvements in the daily lives of ordinary people under a dystopic plutarchy reinforced by magic and technology.
24XX as a system takes more from OSR than Shadowrun, although I think that since the rules of these kinds of games are usually pretty light, you as a GM have license to decide where the flavor fits. Some of the character options in this game include a NetMage, which feels like a hacker, a Witch, which gives you spell-casting, and Brute, which is there to fight - weapons are very loosely described, so creating a street samurai is definitely on the table.
RuneHack: The Roleplaying Game, by Proph.
Runehack Role-playing Game (Runehack RPG) is a game about people who strive to change their world. Few kingdoms of old remain because more and more cities worldwide are purchased by the governing mega-corporations. Unlike previous groups that opposed them, Acumen aims to do so without violence by publicly revealing the truths that these companies are trying to hide.
Runehack used to be a traditional fantasy world. It underwent an upheaval after the wilderness was overrun by paramorph—a species of dangerous shapeshifters. Massive city walls protect civilization from these predators. Over time, people reconnected through the invention of runetech—technology based on the runic magic inherent to this world.
If you want a cyberpunk setting but less of a focus on violence, you might be interested in Runehack. Characters in this game are encouraged to think about stealth and subterfuge, so I think this is meant to be more of a heist genre, with magic and technology as added flavor.
Chrome The Flesh, by LazerSamuraiGG.
Do you want to upgrade yourself and become a living weapon? Or support your friends with apps, Nano, or drones?
Then what are you waiting for? Download Chrome the Flesh, a new urban fantasy TTRPG for free and paint the town red with your enemies.
One of the character options in this game is the Cyber Samurai, so I think when it comes to flavor, Chrome the Flesh is right on the money. The setting has corrupt corporations, a heavily competitive cyber-criminal underworld, and plenty of technological innovations that you can attach to your body, both legally and illegally. Magic feels more implied than baked in, although I definitely feel like the Medic's healing powers are more magical than technological, so it might be a situation where your mileage may vary. One thing's for sure though, and that's that the colour choices for the PDF really make the style of the game pop.

Bob Reynolds Character Analysis Part 2: "I am the Devil Incarnate, and I'm going to a very warm place. I will return."
Part 2 of my Sentry Character analysis. Part 1 Here
Firstly lets recap:
In the original Sentry Mini (2000), Bob was a great hero, but had to be forgotten because his darkness, selfishness, and negative traits were too powerful for the forces of good to fend off.
The Sentry serum is somewhat analogous to a drug, with the Sentry being its highs and the Void being its lows. Bob wants to be a good person, but struggles. (Great power, great responsibility yada yada)
The Sentry, therefore, also exists as a form of self-punishment/Guilt purification. Sentry is invincible, so he can take endless punishment as Bob loathes himself.
Eventually, the cycle of leaving and returning his friends comes to an end when Emma frost and the avengers work together not to beat the void, but to help Bob.
Once he's got some semblance of stability, Bob struggles with an internal guilt over his actions as the void. He saves more people and gives himself less time to be Bob.
Bob was the void first, then the Sentry second, which cements Bobs belief that he truly IS a bad person.
He has a few people in his life that he depends on for stability. Tony Stark and his wife Lindy. Tony helps him as a hero, Lindy helps him as a person.
Okay. Cool. After the events of his Mini, Bob hangs around in his watchtower, helping the avengers out with whatever they're doing in general. There is also the looming threat of the voids return, but he's dead for now. Bob IS the strongest hero the good guys have, but he's so busy that he isn't involved a lot.
Until he has to be.

Haha just kidding he doesn't do shit in this fight.
The Civil War Event gets all heated when the government demands that its superheroes give up their secret identities and register. Sentry has nothing to lose here, his identity might as well be public already. He NEEDS the government to know what's going on with him, who else is gonna stop him should the void return.
If he got serious, Sentry could end this conflict in an afternoon, but he's annoyingly useless throughout the whole event. He pretty much exclusively shows up in group shots, then is absent for the ensuing battle. This is... mostly a symptom of the narrative focusing on other characters, but it is also intentional. We see as much in New Avengers #24 (2006). (Also Omg the art just look at it)

The Sentry is Bob's safety net, a persona that is the objective good guy to counteract the shitty person he thinks he really is. But now, this objective good guy is fighting his own friends, and is doing things he doesn't like doing. He's used to the bad guys being pretty black-and-white, so all this moral ambiguity is really cramping the easy wish-fulfillment that Sentry is supposed to provide.
All he has is his strength. His power. He usually relies on the knowledge that no-one can beat him to act as an impenetrable wall for his feelings. Suddenly, that's turned against him, because now all that strength just means he has that much more responsibility.
"You are the sentry. And the Void is everywhere"
Sentry has the strength to decide who wins and who loses this war, but the waters are so muddy that he doesn't know who should. In this moment the Void is Bobs own moral failings. The Void doesn't need to be a looming threat in Civil war because right now, Sentry mightn't even be doing good deeds in the first place.
"I am the deciding factor in this fight, but how am I (of all people) supposed to discern right from wrong"
Sentry is Pro-Registration in Civil war, on the same side as Reed Richards and Iron Man. I believe this decision is multi-faceted; Bob's watchtower is on top of Tony's house, Bob needs the stability, Bob has a very strong case as to why superheroes shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want...
...And Iron Man is Sentry's friend. (New Avengers Annual #1)
Admittedly, he's being a little snarky here, but I believe Tony is well intentioned. Bob has agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder revolving around feelings of being trapped, helpless or embarrassed, and Tony is letting him know he can leave if he wants.
Another thing of note is that Sentry is distanced from others by his strength. Generally, people don't feel safe around him, they think he's going to snap at any moment.
Tony Stark, who isn't even approaching Sentry's level of power, is comfortable enough to crack jokes to Bob, which might even make him feel a little more human.
(Side note: Its said a few times that Bob and Reed Richards of the Fantastic 4 are best friends, but they barely interact outside of the original Sentry run, where its Reeds responsibility to wipe everybody's memory. Like this is the part where I'd be talking about Reed but they literally don't talk to each other enough lol. Maybe that's just true male friendship idk.)
Considering how close Iron-Man and Sentry seem, its a no brainer Sentry sides with him. But after Bob abandons his first battlefield, flying to the moon so he can think things over, Tony shows up to wrangle him back, and he's not exactly being gentle.
Tony thinks he'll win as long as he keeps Sentry beside him. The imagery here is so telling. In the reflection of Iron Mans visor, there is Sentry, and in the reflection of Sentry's eye, there is Iron Man.
Tony sees himself in Bobs addictions. But he also knows that Bob sees himself in Tony. He can leverage that.
"Don't think about it. Keep going. We'll win. We need you."
Tony appeals to Sentry's heroism here, Bob's desire to be a good person, and his desire to be the Sentry. He says "Like the hero you almost are," implying that despite his years of memories, despite Bob's experience, despite the times he's saved everybody, he isn't a hero yet.
And Tony believes this, too, it isn't even a manipulative lie. Civil war ends with a pro-registration victory. All heroes are now overseen by the government, anyone who isn't is an illegal vigilante. When Tony is asked to form The Mighty Avengers (2007), he likens Sentry to a hero in training.
I think that Tony's subtle change in characterization, going from Bobs friend genuinely to more like Bob's manager, is because of Civil War. Tony started as highly sympathetic to Bob, but it was frustrating for his trump card to literally never do anything ever. He has a golden god on the battlefield, but has to cajole him out of depression every time he needs Bob to throw a punch. Eventually, Iron Man started to see Sentry as... less helpful than most people think.
What matters though, is that Bob cares what Tony thinks, and as such, he spends his time in The Mighty Avengers apologizing for every mistake he makes.
This is different to his usual demeanor. He's not used to working with others on a team, for one, but also, he's taken Tony's words to heart. He wants to be a better hero. As much as he's being used by Tony right now, he's legitimately doing better than we've ever seen him.
"I'll do better next time" as opposed to "I'm better off staying away":
He's got a team, he's got goals, and most importantly, he's got a leader. Before this, it was just Bob beating himself up, always following C.L.O.C.'s next crisis, he was trying to maximize the good he could do as a form of guilt-ridden repentance. Now though, he's told by a person where he needs to be, and he doesn't have to leave the scene immediately. He can do good things and feel good about them, rather than do good things to make up for his own mistakes.
Bob's life is solid right now. He's getting there. This happiness that he isn't even sure he deserves has been well earned, and it was a long time coming. Notice here that Bob looks like Sentry even when he's just hanging out at home. Usually, there is a stark difference between the two, but I associate this with Bob's self image improving dramatically. He is beginning to see himself as the hero that he pretends to be.
With things continuing like this, Captain Marvel was starting to come around, and everyone was on track to grow less distant to Bob... until.
Oh no guys, Tony stark has has become a radiohead fan! That's right. Lethal. Forced. Feminisation. Tony's armor (And by extension, entire body) is taken over by Ultron, who then pretty much IMMEDIATELY
Kills Lindy in brutal fashion. Ultron does this in an attempt to jape Bob into destroying the world.
This is it. Bobs entire support system vanishes in one fell swoop, and naturally, he loses it. His eyes go black, and hes beating on Ultron so badly that it might even kill Tony as well. By this point, its mentioned that its possible for Tony to be returned to normal, but bro is not listening:
Right now, this is both Sentry and the Void. Their interests align here, since Lindy is Voids wife too. It's a mindless rage, meant to make Bob feel better in the simplest way possible. Since Sentry and Void CAN coexist here, they do, and they're stronger than they were before.
This strangely liquid relationship that Bob, Sentry and Void have isn't multiple personality disorder. I'd say they're closer to super-powered persona's. They're characters that Bob slips into, intrusive thoughts that creep into his actions. Bobs powers are heavily influenced by what he believes, more or less. If he believes the Void could take him over, then he can. Likewise, if he believes he has the Void under control, then he does.
The interesting thing is that when the Void steps up and does things that Sentry can't, it's usually bad things, because Sentry is good. In this case, though, Void is doing something BECAUSE Sentry can't do it. Void, unless influenced otherwise by Bob's own beliefs, is still on Bobs side. Anyway, Ultron is defeated, Tony gets fixed
and then Sentry returns to his... very much alive wife
Yeah so Sentry can just bring people back to life if he REALLY feels like it.
Since everyone survived, its easy to think that this is the happy ending to this scenario, but we've seen here that Bob's psyche depends on Lindy and Tony. Mostly Lindy, but Tony does help to keep him stable in the field.
Resurrecting Lindy is probably something that happens frequently. He's a golden age hero and she's the damsel in distress. How many villain encounters do you think she's inexplicably "Survived"? The difference is that during the golden age, he was all Sentry, all denial, all wish-fulfillment, and didn't bat an eye when he saved the day and got the girl. Now that he's a little healthier, he's got just enough of a grip (and Ultron is a mean enough villain) that there's no denying his wife's death.
Unfortunately, Lindy finding this out is the first crack that cannot be sealed up. Imagine being that damsel in distress, killed who-knows how many times, and not even realizing it because your husband is an unstable god of unthinkable power.
Prior to this, Lindy loved her husband, but was prone to making decisions that were a little tone deaf to what he goes through. She was flirtatious with the gardener, she didn't want him to join the Avengers, and she generally didn't seem to notice his suffering beyond how it affected herself. Now, she does, and she wants out.
The power dynamic is incredibly skewed here, its a miracle that she wasn't terrified of her husband before, only mildly bored and concerned for him. This could be a testament to Bobs character, never giving her a reason to be afraid of him, or it could be denial, idk.
Past this point, Lindy doesn't show up much. She's practically withdrawn from the relationship every way but literally. She probably knows that divorcing the Sentry might destroy the world. If Lindy was acting as a pillar of support prior to this, she isn't anymore, which means its ALL on Tony now.
...or it would be, if Sentry didn't still have another long time friend that still really understood him.
Hulk and Sentry go wayyyyyyy back.
Sentry is basically the Hulks dad. It makes sense that the two most mentally ill members of the avengers would be close like this, and they bring the best out of each other in strange, unconventional ways. They are reflections of each other, where Hulk represents Bruce Banner's internalized, compartmentalized rage, the Void expresses Bob's buried hatred for himself and the world. The Void is the only thing Hulk fears, and the Hulk trusts Sentry without question.
In Sentry's original run, it was said that Sentry and his golden light was the thing that calmed the Hulk from a monster into a hero, who helped him reach a kind of inner peace, allowing Hulks awesome power to be used for good. Like minded company, I suppose, real companionship with someone that Hulk couldn't accidentally break in a temper tantrum.
But Bob is also better off with Hulk too. Its easy for Sentry to feel like he's on top of the world and that nothing can beat him, but Hulk keeps him honest to a degree, responsible. The only thing Hulk fears is the Void, and that fear serves as a reminder that Bob always needs to keep himself in check. In Sentry Vol. 2, it was Hulk being wounded by the Void that gave Bob the wake up call he needed.
This is that responsibility shit that Uncle Ben was yapping about, you hear? Bob NEEDS to keep himself in check, because his big green son will be scared of him if he loses control.
Anyway, so between Sentry's big moments in Mighty Avengers, Hulk declares war on the fucking planet.
World-War Hulk (2007). Enraged at the deaths of his family on Sakaar, the World Breaker, Hulk, vows to kill the Illuminati and destroy earth in his unending anger, and it is Sentry who stands as the last(ish) line of defence against a monstrous, unbeatable behemoth.
This storyline marks (In my opinion) the beginning of Sentry's rapid, downward spiral. After fighting Hulk, Sentry is forced into darker and darker places with fewer and fewer allies to pull him out.
Unfortunately, I'm running out of images again, and World War Hulk has lots of panels I want to show off, so I'll have to pick this up in a part 3. I just keep finding stuff I want to show off and talk about, forgive me.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒑𝒕. 𝟏: 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒘
𝒔𝒄𝒊-𝒇𝒊 𝒅𝒓
𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘
Name: The Clementine
Nickname(s): Clem, Clemmy, That Rustbucket, That Rusted Bitch
Registry ID: Long since scratched out, rewritten, falsified, and painted over
Owner / Captain: Soren Fennor
Crew Capacity: Technically 10. Realistically 6. Comfortably… 4.
𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒆
There’s no deep lore behind her name. Soren was filling out a ship registration form while eating the only piece of real fruit he’d had in months—a clementine. He took one look at the form, another bite, and shrugged. “Clementine” it was.
He’s since claimed it was “strategic” (who suspects a ship named after citrus?), but everyone knows he just picked something random and rolled with it.
𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔
To an outsider, The Clementine looks like something cobbled together in the back alley of a scrapyard and held aloft by spite, luck, and at least four illegal modifications. The hull is mismatched, the plating clearly salvaged from other ships, and one of the port-side stabilizers has a dent no one's bothered to fix because "it still works, doesn't it?"
To the crew, though—especially Soren—Clemmy isn’t a ship. She’s home. She growls and sputters and sometimes floods the storage deck with recycled heat exhaust, but she never truly lets us down. Not when it matters.
𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒂𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒄
Clementine is the kind of ship that looks like she’s been through things. Scars across her hull from old near-misses and asteroid grazes. Rusted bolts here, sleek chrome patches there. Her outside is all grit and grime and jury-rigged brilliance, but inside?
Inside, she has soul.
Lighting: Warm and low, more golden than sterile. Not out of design, but because the overhead fluorescents died years ago and Soren swapped them for salvaged amber-tinted lamps that make the place feel like dusk in a storm shelter.
Smell: A permanent cocktail of machine oil, old leather, engine heat, and (now) citrus and greenery from the hydroponic pods I claimed. Sometimes there’s the faintest whiff of gunpowder. Sometimes—smoke. No one ever finds the source.
Noise: She hums constantly—like a sleeping animal, deep in its chest. When she’s flying smooth, you hear it: a low, even rhythm through the walls. When she’s stressed? Everything rattles like she’s trying to shake loose her bones.
Textures: Metal grating underfoot. Worn handrails with the paint flaking off. Soft leather padding on the pilot seat, cracked but lovingly maintained. Cargo nets doubling as storage. A soft chair someone clearly stole from a lounge deck in a nicer ship, shoved into a corner of the common room.
Personalization: There are clearly human touches everywhere—tools laid out in custom holsters, a cracked mug glued back together, dice stuck to the nav board, and a patchwork quilt over a sagging pilot’s chair. Once I join, there are plants. So many plants. Hydroponics spreads like mossy rebellion through the corners of the ship.
Color Scheme: Exterior paint is chipped orange and matte gunmetal gray—suggesting it might once have been sleek, but now just looks like an overripe fruit. A small faded emblem near the hatch features a half-peeled clementine. No one knows if Soren added it or if it just showed up one day.
𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑’𝒔 "𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚"
She’s not sentient, not technically. But if you ask Soren—or anyone who’s spent time on board—they’ll swear she responds. A soft thrumming when things go right. A stuttering ignition when someone makes a joke at her expense. She’s not just a ship, she’s a partner. One with quirks, moods, and a vindictive streak when neglected.
𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔:
Soren taps the doorway every time he boards. Always twice.
No one’s allowed to mock the name. (We do anyway. But quietly.)
I once whispered something sweet to the ship’s bulkhead in passing and the engines booted two seconds faster than usual. No one knows if that was coincidence, but everyone's been sweet-talking Clemmy ever since.
𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝒗𝒔. 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚
Technically, The Clementine can support a crew of 10. Realistically? That would require twice the air filters, thrice the patience, and a small miracle in the kitchen. Right now, she runs with four core crew members:
Soren – Captain, pilot, mechanic, walking liability
Jax – Gunner, co-pilot, anchor, and human wall
Zia – Hacker, medic, saboteur, chaos with a toolkit
Me (Ari) – Stowaway turned unofficial heart of the ship
It shouldn’t work. But it does. Somehow.
Sleeping Quarters: Everyone has their own room, but personal space is more theoretical than sacred. People knock. Usually.
Daily Capacity Stress Test: The ship starts complaining when more than six people try to shower in the same cycle. She has opinions.
𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝒓𝒉𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒃𝒐𝒂𝒓𝒅
There’s no official schedule. Just the rhythm of engine hums, sudden alarms, and someone yelling “What the hell did you do?!” at least once a day. Life aboard The Clementine is a strange cocktail of:
Chaotic missions
Late-night repairs
Unofficial snack raids
Hacker insomnia
Soren panicking in the cockpit while I calmly offer tea
Morning (if you can call it that in space): Usually begins with someone swearing about the auto-lights flickering, Zia downing at least three cups of coffee with an illegal amount of caffeine, and Jax already working out in dead silence.
Midday: System checks, minor maintenance, training, me tending to my plants, and Zia arguing with the ship’s subroutines. There’s often music—too loud, too weird, or weirdly serene. No one agrees on playlists. Soren and Zia usually skip meals until someone shoves food at them.
Evening: If nothing’s on fire, everyone collapses into the common room. Cards, coding, weapons cleaning, arguing over space pasta texture—whatever counts as bonding. I sometimes sing. Jax reads. Soren pretends to tinker with whatever's in his hand. Zia hacks things she absolutely shouldn’t.
Night: Zia never sleeps when she should. Jax sleeps like the dead. Soren paces the ship like a ghost. I vanish into vents or hammocks.
𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒘 𝒅𝒚𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒄𝒔
We didn’t mean to become a family. But space is cold, long, and sometimes trying to kill you. You either learn to trust your crew—or you die with a snarky comment halfway out of your mouth.
Soren and Jax are the core axis. Trust forged through fire, blood, and too many joint screw-ups to count.
Zia and Jax are the chaos-and-order sibling duo: she pokes the bear, he growls, she steals his snacks.
Soren and Zia are verbal brawlers, co-engineers, and low-key mutual respect disasters.
Me and the rest? I came in glowing and soft and strange—and wrapped around them all like roots through metal. Now the crew orbits me in ways they don’t fully admit. (I love being the main character. Sorry)
There’s tension. Banter. Shouting. Unspoken care. Nobody says “I love you.” we say:
“Eat something.”
“I fixed it.”
“Don’t touch that or I’ll kill you.”
“I rerouted the power to keep you alive.”
𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒔, 𝒓𝒖𝒍𝒆𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒐𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒆
There are no formal rules. But there are understood laws aboard the Clementine:
Don’t touch Zia while she’s working. Or ever.
Soren gets cockpit rights unless he's bleeding, unconscious, or both.
No one mocks my plants. They bite. Or I do. Or both.
If Jax is cleaning his weapons in silence? Leave him alone.
Mid-mission flirting is fine. Mid-mission confessions are not.
If someone’s crying in the bathroom, they get ten minutes. Then backup arrives.
𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆’𝒔 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐:
A “crew board” in the common room covered in notes and petty doodles.
A betting pool about how many times Soren will say “This’ll be fine” before something explodes.
A small shared stash of actual good snacks in the galley, guarded by a code no one shares with outsiders.
“SOREN DID IT.” The default accusation when something breaks, catches fire, or mysteriously becomes sentient. Not always true. Usually true.
A color-coded magnetic chart in the common room labeled “CURRENT LEVEL OF ‘FINE.’”
Green = Actual fine
Yellow = Something’s broken but we’re pretending it’s not
Orange = Someone’s bleeding, but it’s manageable
Red = Zia’s laughing too hard for it to be good
Black = Soren said, “Trust me.” Again.
The “Nobody Dies Alone” Pact. Unofficial. Unspoken. Etched into everything we do. If a fight breaks out, if someone’s in danger, if something goes sideways—you don’t leave without everyone. Ever. It’s not a rule. It’s just how we live.
𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒓𝒂
Ok so I was gonna post something about the velari's bioluminescence first, and what it means, but that requires me to make a lot of charts, and I really don't wanna do that right now, so I'll probably save that post for a little later. Plus, I don't really wanna post all the velari stuff at once, so I decided to post about Clemmy instead. And for some reason I've been really into my sci-fi dr lately, so I'll probably be posting a lot about this dr for the next few days, and then I may go back to also posting about my siren and aetheros drs. But for now at least, I'm really enjoying talking about this dr, and other people seem to like it as well, so yeah!
But anyways, I decided to put quite a few little bits that I hope start to showcase some of the crew's personalities, including clemmy's (she's almost started to feel like her own person to me at this point). I'll probably do another post on her about a lot more of the technical stuff, and then maybe eventually a few on some of the interior spaces. The only problem is that that's another like 30 pages that I'll have to split up into posts. But that's a problem for later.

Ni Translocality
Ni is a function that expands the registration of an object to include its temporal totality (Pi), which is the larger episode or theme to which it belongs. It then associates this episode to all historical instances of episodes that are isomorphic to it (N), transforming the definition of the object into a thematic story that is disconnected from any particular place or time. The object is then understood as something transcending the present, as something translocal, and not following a linear, chronological path from the past while still being temporal.
Metaphors & Visual Aphorisms
The Ni function compels the individual to live a slowly paced, hands-off life of observation and reflection on the information structures of the world. First, they are data synthesizers that formulate image-encoded schemas from unconsciously woven patterns in reality. The Ni user will be very graphic in their consciousness, thinking in visuals and representing the world through visual metaphors. These dynamic but geometric relationships are registered as essential to reality's functioning and are eventually superimposed onto other life domains in a proverbial form. "A tree's branches can only grow as far up as its roots go down," "flowing water never goes stale," or "every light casts a shadow" are examples of the graphical aphorisms that may develop from this information synthesizing process. For the Ni user, the world is not comprehended through words or axioms; it is through these visual relationships that words help convey to others. Due to the abundance of symmetry observed in life, these relations are often symmetrical --as embodied in concepts like the Taoist yin-yang symbol. An elaborate worldview is inescapably developed predicated on these abstracted relationships, aimed to give life predictability and continuity of narrative. The Ni user never sees the world straightforwardly, as reality is formed from representative structures --not rational absolutes. To the Ni user, knowledge is the net awareness gained by superimposing layers of these representations on reality and mapping its landscape as far and wide as possible.
The Mind & Panpsychism
Moreover, because they view reality as representation, the Ni user will constantly experience life as a perceptual sphere built from the interactions of mind and material. The world appears as a tapestry woven together by higher forces that underpin every object and substance – causing the objects to feel like the outer shells or totems of fundamental forces. Moreover, a sense will often exist – as explored in phenomenology – that consciousness is the essential thing. In some form or another, the Ni user will come to embody the philosophy that the psyche has a degree of priority over the material. One way to imagine this is to say the world constellates itself to the Ni user as being built equally of "psyche" and of matter. Still, every Ni user will synthesize this felt sense in slightly different ways, with some believing that consciousness is the prime constituent of reality and others feeling we are co-creators of reality by our active participation in how it appears to us and how we ascribe meaning to the contents within it, which can lead magnetically to a type of panpsychism, where the Ni user views the contents of the mind seriously as entities, forces, energies and contours as perceivable as literal objects are to other people. These psychological images and forces will not only be present but will also be persistent. To them, the psyche has a steady yet fluid shape, an image, and a terrain to be explored through vision and internal perception. Moreover, while other types may arrive at similar philosophies through rationality, for the Ni user, this sensation is not something deduced but simply uncovered, as it represents the default state of their experience. This proclivity naturally leads to an interest in meditation, eastern thought, and spirituality, which emphasizes these same psychic aspects and presents a philosophy of consciousness more natively aligned to their phenomenological experience.
Narrowness & Convergence
However, for all their openness towards surreal ideas about consciousness, the Ni user is not random or unstructured in their views. They are scarcely persuaded of most things and are instead highly cautious of ideas. The Ni user will have a keen eye for identifying the improbability of things and will not be prone to jump on board with things unless their inner imagery already maps out an inescapable trajectory in that direction. The Ni user is not an inciter or generator of novel things, nor is their specialty a spontaneous creativity. Instead, it is the holistic assimilation of trends over time and a convergence of perspectives along the most reinforced trendlines. They generally see only one or a few trajectories stemming from a given situation and are magnetically drawn to the likeliest interpretations. Thus, the ideas the Ni user arrives at are not things they create but things they discover to be already "the case," often sourcing from an inside-out evaluation of being but just as well from a panoramic evaluation of society. In this way, the Ni user is a sort of investigator or excavator of the primordial imagery in themselves and society. More than any other type, the Ni user receives a linear and direct feed of the imagery of the unconscious, and because of this convergence of focus, many Ni users across time continue to re-discover and re-articulate the same things as they unearth the same territory. As Ni users from all ages inquire into questions of being, their convergent intuition guides them to parallel answers and to convey those understandings in imagery --since image is the primary means by which that information is discovered and encoded. A canonical historical archive, therefore, has developed over time in the form of symbology, the encrypted patterns and representative structures that underpin reality, as collectively uncovered over time.
Symbology
In this sense, the Ni user may often find camaraderie in the symbology laid down by previous pioneers for its capacity to articulate that felt inner content. Strange as it may seem to others to believe or seriously consider such archaic and outdated emblems, the Ni user is drawn to these old images like the Si user is drawn to information encoded in the old earth. The Ni user may not wish to be a mystic and, when not fully individuated, may shrink away from this imagery for fear of academic reprimand. Still, they may feel that their awareness style drafts them inescapably into these ideas. They emerge out of themselves when any intense investigation is done or even when no investigation is done. The realm of alchemical symbolism, the Tarot, ayurvedic medicine, and Astrology may be studied intently for their capacity to superimpose a representation of life. Shapes also contain a powerful influence over them, and they may be drawn to sacred geometry and mandalas. Numerology may also be investigated. Over time, by studying these emblems to discover their true meanings, they are slowly transformed into the likeness of those who built them. As they unearth the contents of this domain, they often become affiliated with the taxonomies used by their predecessors to try to express this underworld. However, their dabbling in these ideas may earn them a reputation as a mystic and confuse family and friends who may not understand the significance of such concepts.
Archetypes & Stereotypes
These observations form a vast archive of typicalities as the Ni user matures into their worldview. Each pattern of life is epitomized in the psyche as a general rule or process, which leads quite inescapably to the formation of stereotypes at the local level and archetypes at the universal level --both of which are used to map reality by providing a sense of predictability. In the positive sense, this stereotyping tendency makes life an iconic series of interactions between previously indexed forces and entities. The Ni user will overlay their schema onto the world and see iterations of the same substances everywhere. From this vantage point, certain social or political interactions will appear to them as clockwork, a series of eventualities stemming from two or more colliding forces. The interactions in a neighborhood may be seen through the same light, as categories are applied to each class of person, and their collisions cause transformations through a sort of necessary chemistry. However, as often captured by the negative sense of the word stereotype, this can lead to errors in perception where a pattern or schema is superimposed over a situation too prematurely. A person is anticipated to be a given way due to the symbol they represent while turning out to be quite different. Moreover, at the archetypal level, the same simplification may occur where the Ni user reduces the global situation as something emergent from a conflict between the light and dark, the masculine and feminine, an interaction of four or five elements or some other schema which neglects certain subtleties and details, which may be infuriating to those who live with the Ni user as they may feel the Ni user is oversimplifying them, or worse that they are pigeonholing people into their categories --whether of culture, class, race or gender. Many may scoff at the Ni user for depending on what they feel are outdated prejudices and not seeing things at the individual level. However, the Ni user cannot ignore what larger pattern someone or something generally belongs to and will tend to incidentally synthesize life from that lens without any actual investment or commitment to any dogma or belief system.
Synchronicity & Parapsychology
Another effect often emerging from the Ni function is a belief in synchronicity. Because of how Ni registers life through a delicate tracking of "significance" --not by the rigidity of causal chains-- the Ni user will instinctively see the value in data associations that converge in theme and motif, even when the cause is unknown. As is often the case for both intuitive processes, the pattern is recognized first without needing to have the sensory points explicitly traced, and neither does the absence of a sequential explanation make the information alignments vanish. Moreover, when Ni is especially strong, seemingly disconnected layers of existence are woven together through an entangled point, compelling many Ni users to contend with the possible existence of the acausal. Certain events or datasets may be felt as crossing different planes of reality and inexorably related even when a surface examination would see no trace between them. They may be struck by compelling evidence for the existence of extra-sensory perception or remote viewing, which allows us to see through the eyes of others or predict their thoughts. For some, relationships may be intuited to exist between oneself and previous lives. Areas of the body may be associated with certain psychic energies through emotional tapping, chakras, iridology, or palmistry. Certain recurring numbers may be felt as omens of blessings or catastrophes. If these intimations persist, they can become highly suspicious and feel that certain events will shortly happen when a given number, detail, or sign suggests a strong karmic force is at play.
-Behaviors Under Stress
Conspiracy Theories
When the Ni user falls out of mental health, their suspicions degrade further into superstitions, death omens, and a persistent state of anxiety. Life becomes chaotic and unpredictable. The world will feel utterly uncertain to them, and they will be unable to see the cause of their suffering or that of society. As they struggle to intuit their situation through perceptual projection, the misfortunes they experience are not interpreted as localized occurrences but are instead epitomized as emerging from some extra-personal force looming over all things. They will start to perceive a woven network of intentions behind everything, pulling the strings of society at large. Here, we see the Ni user fabricate conspiracy theories: extraterrestrial hypotheses, occult government sects, the imminent rise of a new world order, and the like. A sense exists that something unseen is making all this happen, and for once, the Ni user loses their non-committal nature and becomes utterly fixated on certain interpretations of life, which will cause them great difficulty in their daily lives as the Ni user may be quickly ostracized from society for their bizarre premonitions. More than a few distressed Ni users throughout history have been branded as local lunatics, eventually growing morose and resentful for what they feel is the lack of foresight and idiocy of the common person.
Apocalyptic Visions
A different effect we often see in a distressed Ni user is a series of apocalyptic visions. They may experience nightmares, either when asleep or awake, vividly depicting scenes of war, destroyed buildings, massacres, and the end of civilization. Moreover, the Ni user may experience these sudden flashes with the same level of physicality with which they experience their waking life --making it difficult to discredit them as illusions. Here, we see an unconscious projection and intrusion of their polar sensory function into their mind, causing literal sensations to trigger their nervous system without an actual cause. The relationship between intuition and sensation is a two-way street, where one can seep into the other unbidden when excessive repression is at its breaking point --allowing their intuitions to unconsciously fabricate sensory experiences that are patterned after their thematic convergence. These unsettling images may cause them to feel that their visions are pending actualities. A memento mori will settle over them. Society is on the brink of collapse; everything is headed in the worst direction, and anything short of immediate correction will lead to an irreparable catastrophe.

A political action committee backed by billionaire Elon Musk is being investigated by the Michigan secretary of state’s office amid efforts to collect voter data. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has said he created and helped fund the America PAC, which is supporting former President Donald Trump. Musk has a net worth of over $225 billion, according to Forbes. The committee has been acquiring detailed voter information from those living in Michigan and other battleground states after people submit their personal data through a section on the PAC’s website that says “register to vote.” After clicking on the “register to vote” tab on America PAC’s website, users in states like Michigan can submit a ZIP code, address and phone number. People with a Michigan address are brought to a page that says “thank you” and asks users to “complete the form below” to help wrap up the voter registration process. As of Sunday afternoon, though, there was no other form to complete below the words “thank you.”

Wig - British Museum Collection
Inventory Number: EA2560 New Kingdom, Dynasty 18 Location Information: Thebes (historic - Upper Egypt)
Description:
This wig is made of human hair, and is said to have come from a tomb at Thebes. It was found in its original box, made of reeds (now registration no. .2561). An examination by a modern wigmaker concluded that the standard of craftsmanship was as high as in a good modern wig. Indeed the foundation was not unlike that of 'fashion' wigs of the 1970s. It is thought to be a man's wig.
The wig consists of two elements, a mass of naturally curly hair on top [NB: the hair is artifically curled, rather than 'naturally'.] with several hundred thin plaits hanging from ear to ear around the neck of the main wig. The foundation is composed of a net of human hair, finely plaited, with rhomboidal apertures approximately 1.27 cm long at the sides. The curls are formed from naturally [sic] curly hairs, heavily impregnated with a mixture of beeswax and resin. The thin plaits are each made of three strands of hair originally 30-38 cm long, though most of the ends are now broken off.
Overall there are some 300 strands of hair in the wig, each strand containing about 400 hairs. The hairs seem to have been attached to the foundation as follows: all the hair was coated with beeswax and resin, and about 2.5 cm of each strand was looped around the foundation and pressed back into the wax on the strand. A thin sub-strand was wound around this to ensure good attachment. As beeswax melts between 62 and 65° C, this method of fixing should have been more than adequate in Egypt.

NBFC vs. Microfinance Institution (MFI): Key Differences
As India’s financial sector continues to expand, Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) have emerged as vital players in bridging the credit gap, especially in underserved and unbanked regions. While both NBFCs and MFIs serve the purpose of providing financial assistance, they operate under distinct regulatory frameworks and serve different customer bases.
For those exploring NBFC Registration in India or curious about the role of MFIs, it’s essential to understand how these two types of financial institutions differ in structure, operations, and compliance.
What is an NBFC?
A Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) is a company registered under the Companies Act, 2013, which provides banking-like financial services without holding a banking license. While NBFCs cannot accept demand deposits like banks, they are actively involved in:
Loan and credit facilities
Investment in securities
Hire-purchase and leasing services
Infrastructure financing
To operate legally, NBFCs must obtain an NBFC license from RBI in India, and adhere to the regulatory framework outlined by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
What is a Microfinance Institution (MFI)?
A Microfinance Institution (MFI) is a subset of NBFCs that specifically provides small loans (typically under ₹1-2 lakh) to low-income individuals or groups who do not have access to traditional banking services. MFIs aim to promote financial inclusion and empower communities, especially women and rural entrepreneurs.
In India, MFIs can operate as NBFC-MFIs, a category created and regulated by the RBI. This means MFIs also need an NBFC License in India to function officially.
Key Differences Between NBFCs and MFIs
CriteriaNBFCMFI (Microfinance Institution)Target AudienceSMEs, corporates, individualsLow-income groups, rural borrowers, women entrepreneursLoan SizeMedium to large loansMicro loans typically below ₹1-2 lakhLoan PurposeBusiness, personal, infrastructure, vehicle, etc.Income generation, household needs, small businessesRegulatory CategoryNBFC (Investment, Loan, Infra, etc.)NBFC-MFI (Specific subcategory under NBFC)Interest Rate RegulationLess strictCapped and regulated by RBI to prevent exploitationClient ScreeningCredit score-based evaluationsGroup lending, social collateral, field checksNBFC LicenseRequires RBI licenseRequires RBI license under NBFC-MFI guidelines
NBFC or MFI: Which One Should You Register?
If you're planning to set up a financial services company and are wondering whether to opt for NBFC Registration online in India or form an MFI, your decision should depend on:
Target Market: MFIs are ideal for low-income or rural markets, while NBFCs cater to a broader spectrum.
Capital Availability: MFIs may require less initial capital, but the RBI has specific net owned fund (NOF) requirements.
Business Objectives: If your focus is on financial inclusion, MFIs are better. If you're targeting profitability and diversified services, a standard NBFC is more suitable.
How to Get an NBFC License in India
The process for Online NBFC Registration in India involves multiple steps:
Company Incorporation under the Companies Act
Meeting minimum NOF requirements (₹2 crore for standard NBFCs; ₹5 crore for NBFC-MFIs)
Creating detailed business and compliance plans
Submitting an application to the RBI via the COSMOS portal
Continuous engagement with a trusted NBFC Registration Consultant in India
Engaging an experienced NBFC registration consultant ensures that your documentation, compliance framework, and RBI communication are handled professionally—helping you secure your NBFC license online faster and more efficiently.
Conclusion
While NBFCs and MFIs may seem similar, their operational models, regulatory constraints, and customer segments are vastly different. Whether you’re aiming to register a microfinance firm or a broader financial company, aligning your business model with RBI norms is crucial.
If you're considering NBFC Registration in India, partnering with a professional NBFC Registration Consultant in India can simplify the process of securing an NBFC license from RBI in India—and ensure you start your journey with full legal and regulatory readiness.

How to Generate leads for b2b Business
Leads are oxygen for every SaaS founder. But more important than volume is quality—prospects who match your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), have budget, and are ready to start a real conversation. Below is a plain‑English guide to the three go‑to‑market (GTM) channels that deliver the highest‑quality B2B leads today, plus step‑by‑step tactics you can use this week.
1. Nail Your ICP Before You Do Anything Else
Think of your ICP as a filter. A clear filter means:
Higher response rates: You’re talking to people who actually care.
Shorter sales cycles: Budget and authority are already in place.
Lower customer‑churn: The product truly solves their pain.
Quick ICP checklist
Firmographics: industry, company size, funding stage.
Pain points: What problem keeps them up at night?
Buying triggers: hiring bursts, regulatory changes, new funding, etc.
Decision unit: who signs, who influences, who uses.
Document this in one page and share it with marketing and sales before launching any campaign.
2. Channel #1 – LinkedIn: Your Always‑On Prospecting Engine
Why LinkedIn? Conversion on LinkedIn’s native Lead Gen Forms averages 13 %, far above the 2 – 3 % most landing pages manage. Response rates to LinkedIn DMs (10 %) now double cold email averages. (sopro.io, expandi.io)
How to do it
Polish your profile & page: headline = pain you solve + proof.
Connect > engage > message: Send a non‑sales connection note, comment on two of their posts, then DM with a value nugget (e.g., benchmark PDF).
Post “demand‑net” content: quick wins, teardown threads, customer stories. Consistency beats virality.
Run Lead‑Gen ads when budget allows: keep questions minimal to protect that 13 % conversion.
Pro tip: Block 30 minutes daily for “relationship reps” (comments + DMs). Pipeline compounds.
3. Channel #2 – Webinars: Trust Builder at Scale
Why webinars? 73 % of B2B marketers call webinars their top source of high‑quality leads, with registration‑to‑attendee conversion up to 51 %. (hubilo.com, demandsage.com)

Aim for one webinar per month; most SaaS teams see cost‑per‑lead drop after the third one as content and promotion processes mature.
4. Channel #3 – Outbound Email & Cold Calling: Precision Strikes
Metric (2025)
Email
Cold Call
Average reply rate
8 – 10 % (saleshandy.com)
Connect‑to‑meeting ~2 % – 3 % (leadforensics.com)
Best days
Tue / Thu (emails)
Tue & Wed for demos (only-b2b.com)
Email tips
Personalize line 1: a custom first sentence increases replies by 30 %.
Short & bright: 50‑75 words, 1 ask, no fluff.
Follow‑up x3: a respectful thread boosts total replies by 28 %. (saleshandy.com)
Cold‑call tips
Research first: know their tech stack or recent news.
Pattern interrupt opener: “Can I have 27 seconds to tell you why I’m calling?”
Value nugget before pitch: “SaaS CFOs use us to slash invoice processing time by 40 %.”
Schedule the next step on call: calendar invite beats “I’ll email you.”
5. Orchestrate a Multi‑Touch Sequence
Day 0: LinkedIn connect.
Day 2: Personalized cold email.
Day 4: LinkedIn comment + DM with a relevant resource.
Day 6: Cold call referencing earlier touchpoints.
Day 10: Webinar invite or gated case study.
This blend raises familiarity, so each new touch “feels” warmer.
6. Measure, Learn, Repeat
KPI
Good starting benchmark
LinkedIn DM reply rate
10 %
Webinar reg‑to‑attend
35 % (shoot for 50 %+)
Cold email reply
8 %
Cold call connect‑to‑demo
2 %
Review these weekly, A/B one variable at a time (subject lines, call openers, landing‑page copy). When a channel beats benchmark, double down.
7. Key Takeaways
Start with a crystal‑clear ICP so every lead has real buying power.
Master LinkedIn, webinars, and targeted outbound—they’re the 2025 big three for SaaS.
Use multi‑touch sequences to warm prospects and stand out.
Track and tweak; small optimizations compound into big pipeline gains.

The Step-by-Step Guide to Using the USPTO Trademark Search Tool Effectively
Before you commit to a new brand name, slogan, or logo, there’s one essential step you can’t afford to skip: conducting a USPTO trademark search. The Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS), provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), allows you to check if your mark is already registered or if there are similar marks that could cause legal problems.
While the tool is free and accessible, it can be overwhelming for beginners. This step-by-step guide will show you how to use the USPTO trademark search tool effectively and interpret your results.
Step 1: Know What You’re Searching For
Before diving into the USPTO’s TESS (Trademark Electronic Search System), get clear on the type of mark you’re checking. Are you searching for:
A word mark (e.g., your business or product name)?
A design or logo mark?
A slogan or tagline?
To get meaningful results, consider variations that might still trigger a conflict:
Alternative spellings
Phonetic equivalents
Plurals or abbreviations
Related goods or services under the same trademark class
Remember, the USPTO doesn’t just reject identical matches—it rejects marks that are confusingly similar. Casting a wider net at this stage can help you avoid costly surprises later.
Step 2: Go to the USPTO TESS Search Page
Access the TESS search tool by visiting: 👉 https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/
Click on "Search our trademark database (TESS)" to begin.
Step 3: Choose the Right Search Option
TESS offers three main search forms:
1. Basic Word Mark Search (New User)
Best for quick, simple searches.
Use if you’re searching for one or two basic keywords.
2. Word and/or Design Mark Search (Structured)
Ideal for more advanced searches.
Allows you to search by word, owner, classification, and other fields.
3. Word and/or Design Mark Search (Free Form)
Advanced option using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT).
Requires knowledge of USPTO field codes.
If you're new to trademark searches, start with Option 2 (Structured Search) as it offers the right balance between simplicity and control.
Step 4: Conduct a Word Search
Enter your desired brand name in the Search Term field.
Tips:
Use wildcards: * replaces multiple characters, ? replaces one character. Example: Searching Smart* will include results like “SmartTech” or “Smartly.”
Try variations: phonetic versions (e.g., “Xpress” vs. “Express”) and misspellings.
In the Field dropdown, select Combined Word Mark to search for names, slogans, or phrases.
Click Submit Query.
Step 5: Review the Results Carefully
The results will list trademarks that match or resemble your search.
Click on each entry to view full details, including:
Serial and registration number
Word or design description
Owner’s name
Goods/services classification
Filing and registration date
Mark status (LIVE or DEAD)
Pay special attention to:
LIVE trademarks: These are active and may pose a legal conflict.
Classification: If the mark is in your industry or product/service category, it’s more likely to be an issue.
Step 6: Identify Potential Conflicts
The USPTO will reject marks that are confusingly similar to existing LIVE trademarks in the same or related classes.
Ask:
Does it look or sound similar to your mark?
Is it in a similar industry or market?
Is the brand well-known or widely used?
Even if the name is slightly different, your application could be denied if confusion is likely.
Step 7: Search for Similar Spelling and Sounding Names
Repeat your search using variations:
Different spelling (e.g., “Koffee” for “Coffee”)
Synonyms (e.g., “Rapid” for “Fast”)
Shortened or combined words (e.g., “InstaPic” vs. “Instant Picture”)
Why? The USPTO examiner will consider the overall impression, not just the exact spelling.
Step 8: Check for Dead Marks
Some trademarks may show up as DEAD (abandoned or cancelled). These are no longer legally active, but:
A DEAD mark may be reused if it’s not in current commercial use.
Some dead marks were abandoned due to legal disputes—proceed with caution.
Step 9: Search by International Class
Every trademark is assigned an International Class based on the product or service category (e.g., Class 25 for clothing, Class 9 for software).
You can filter your search by class in the “Structured Search” form using the field International Class.
This helps you focus only on trademarks within your industry.
Step 10: Document Your Results
Keep a record of your search results. Screenshot or save entries that are:
Potential conflicts
Clear matches
Supporting evidence for your filing
This will help if you consult an attorney or face challenges later.
Final Tips
Don’t rely on one search. Search multiple spellings, synonyms, and industry terms.
Consider a trademark attorney if results are unclear or you spot possible conflicts.
Remember that TESS only covers federally registered trademarks. For full coverage, you’ll also need to check:
Domain names
Social media handles
State-level trademark databases
Common law usage (e.g., Google or Yelp)
Final Thoughts
The USPTO TESS tool is a powerful resource if you know how to use it. By following this step-by-step guide, you’ll reduce your risk of rejection and increase your chances of securing a trademark that’s legally safe and truly yours.
Still unsure? Consider partnering with a trademark search company to perform a more comprehensive and professional search.
