Hello, everyone! This is my submission for #nycstiyd. This is Nellie Bly - worldwide traveler, investigative journalist, and late 19th century feminist. Although she was born as Elizabeth Jane Cochrane in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania on May 5th, 1864, she is a #nycicon because of her brave, pioneering, intrepid spirit. She would have been around ten when the United States government started constructing the Statue of Liberty in 1874, and would have been roughly twenty-two when the Statue of Liberty was officially completed in 1886. This is why the torch is copper instead of green – to reflect their beginnings. She started off with the Pittsburgh Dispatch writing articles on the lives of working women in factories and even served time in Mexico as a foreign correspondent. When she was relegated to arts and theater reporting, she packed her bags and went to work and live in New York City in 1887. Nellie’s claim to fame included her expose on the poor conditions of asylums at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island, where she disguised herself as a disturbed patient for ten days to expose the asylum’s brutal treatment of its patients in 1887, making the way for undercover journalism. She also attempted to travel around the world in eighty days in 1889 like Jules Verne’s famous novel, Around the World in Eighty Days – she beat that record by eight days and circumnavigated the world in seventy-two days in spite of rough weather and a missed connection across the Atlantic Sea back to the United States. She would later be on the Eastern front reporting on the action in Europe during World War I, where she was mistaken for a British spy. She spent the rest of her days in the Bronx until her death of pneumonia on January 27th, 1922. I would have made more submissions to better commemorate @fashion_0utsider ‘s #nycstyleicons #ootd challenge, but I ran out of time, so this will have to do instead. The coat was a lot of work, but it was fully worth it, and I would like to tackle more historical figures sometime soon. #dkayproductionsart #dkayproductions #art #nycstiyd #nelliebly #nellie #bly #stiyd #nyc #journalist #feminist #stiydchallenge #historicalwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/CLlMbs4hCHq/?igshid=in03j1p4tqq1

Happy 134th birthday to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge!
In “Cable Crossing” (1996) at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall/Chamber Street station (4,5,6), Mark Gibian took inspiration from the Brooklyn Bridge’s pioneering steel cables and suspended roadway.  His artwork uses  a web of cable panels that mimic the graceful forms of the bridge suspended from an overhead structure below a skylight. The artist “wanted to explore movement, using soft curves with hard materials." The lacy curves of the panels "echo the beauty of the bridge's cross-hatched cables and the feeling of flight as it springs across the East River."
