D&D Story Time
TLDR: Party gets distracted during interrogation and buys drugs.
Context. We are playing an evil campaign where we are also building up a settlement as a safe haven for people fleeing an equally evil Holy Empire. (the whole world is fucking evil I guess) Our party consists of five level 10-11 players. A tiefling barbarian named Mo’Dest (Me), a tabaxi ranger named Steaks and New Boots, a dwarven fighter named Kitty, a yuan-ti sorceress named Amui, and a human rogue with an overly long name but we call him Luther, who is also an ex-inquisitor of the Holy Empire and often carries the party’s one brain cell. We also have about a dozen or so npc characters that range from non-combatants, to can fight, but are about half our level. When it comes to combat, we are extremely efficient killing machines. But outside of combat, we are a bunch of idiots.
Continuing with the story, on our way to where we were going to settle down, we had to pass through a massive swamp. While traveling, we encountered a gang of what we think were drug dealers that attacked us with a giant crocodile that was covered in acidic pustules which they affectionately called “Mojo.” We just call it a coke-odile because how else does a bunch of drug dealers make a giant acidic croc other than giving it a bunch of coke?
Anyway, after leaving the swamp we found a relatively dry flatland that has traders and even a few small towns built in the rubble of ancient ruins. We find a set of ruins next to a spooky forest that is unoccupied (except for a few now dead giant owlbears) and we set up our base of operations.
About an in-game week later, we notice a small sign that was placed outside of our settlement that is draped in a bit of scaly skin with the word “Mojo” written on it. We decide that these swamp drug lords will be a problem if we leave them alone so we set out to make sure that they don’t bother us again. Probably by killing them all, but we’ll decide on that later. However, the swamp is fucking HUGE and there is no way we will be able to find these guys if we go blindly wandering in the swamp. We also learn that there are many gangs in the swamp so if we aren’t careful we could start a war with the wrong gang.
After searching around the sign for a bit, we pick of the trail and follow the tracks to one of the other nearby towns. We bribe our way in and start asking around town. Our rogue uses thieves’ cant to try to find out where we can find the local thieves guild so we can try to narrow our search. We find two locations that could be useful, a part in town where drugs are often sold, and the thieves HQ. Wanting to start small, we go to the drug area first, which is where we ended last weeks session.
Our session last night ended up almost being a complete waste of time, as the dealer we were talking to didn’t know anything useful, and it took so long to find out he was useless that we didn’t have enough time to go to the HQ. Part of the reason it took so long was because our rogue, being an ex-inquisitor, likes to ask lots of questions to catch people in a web of lies. And when you do this to just some mook who sells drugs and was clearly also on drugs, this just does not work. The other reason it took so long was because the rest of the party, myself included, decided that if we are talking to a drug dealer, we might as well get some drugs. So we kept interrupting this interrogation to buy drugs and ended up with no information. So next week we’ll pick up right were we started last night, but with about 50 golds worth of hard narcotics.
Now, something I hadn’t mentioned, is that the player playing our rogue takes extensive notes. We like to give him shit for it but honestly, his notes are so good that the rest of the party barely has to write anything down. After the session I took a look at his notebook and saw only one page filled, which is not a lot by normal standards. After reading it though I had to take a picture of it and share it.

For those who can’t see the image:
Die Erweiterung Session 18 11/26/19
I look for the glyphs for the drug dealers and find a building with them with a light. I do the shave and a haircut knock and a slit opens, I greet the person behind the slit and they ask me what we want. I try to covertly say we would like cocaine and lead into the cokeodile talk. I get a little too into the drug talk but I snap back to it thanks to Steaks. I ask if they know Mojo and they ask if I need some sexual stimulant. Mo chimes in but I quiet him. I also ask if they know if any of the other drug gangs utilize crocodiles as attack animals. I also mimic their call signs. Nothing comes to mind. Steak also mentions they string people up and murders them. Nothing comes up from them. Steaks decides to to buy some cocaine and gives some to Kitty. They think that maybe the gang are just hobos and should be coked up like them to find them. I start getting very irritated (irl too). I try to compose myself by praying to Okron. Mo ends up buying mushrooms. I finally lose it (irl too) and ask to speak to a manager. Kitty pulls me back. We decide to just visit the Shinobi Thieves. I really need a fucking drink. Shenanigans.

Reverse Heroine | IV

a supposedly only 2 part fic ft. fuckboy!jungkook x reader
summary: because platonic love is underrated
genre: college au, fluff/angst
word count: 5.4k
a/n: its been too long. but i’m finally back to writing! that’s if anyone is still up for reading this 👼🏻 anyways, please let me know how u feel about this chapter! also i didn’t proofread.
“Hey-”
“Hey!”
You stop in your footsteps when you feel a hand land on your shoulder, meeting eyes with Jungkook – who’s catching his breath when he calls your name. With a small smile on your lips, you pull your earphones out of your ear.
“Sorry, I – uh -” You gestured at the white earbuds, “couldn’t hear you.”
Jungkook flashes his signature bunny grin, giving you a brief shake of his head. “It’s fine.” He looks down on the floor for a short second, before meeting your gaze again. “So, um - you suddenly left yesterday-”
Memories from yesterday flood in. After the realization of your growing affections for the boy, it was painful to witness Jungkook look at Daeun like she was his world, his everything. You were getting ahead of yourself again, false expectations of something more. Jungkook has always seen you with a friend, he never did anything that made you believe otherwise. No, you couldn’t ruin your friendship with him like that, you couldn’t betray Jungkook.
“Oh – I got a text from Tae, saying he needed my help for something.” Words flow out smoothly as you lie without hesitation.
Jungkook’s eyes flashes with worry, “Did something bad happened?” He takes a step closer and a rush of guilt hits you for lying to his face. “Are you alright? Yo- you didn’t get hurt or anything, right?”
You quickly shake your head, dismissing any uneasiness that was lingering in his mind. “It was nothing important! He was just asking me about the-” You pause, quickly saying out the first thing that pops in your head “-physics assignment.” You start nod repeatedly, hoping that you can convince him more than you convinced yourself.
“I see…” Jungkook mumbles, looking away to quickly scan the walking crowds on campus grounds. You stall for a moment, scolding yourself that you have to stop acting so weird before Jungkook realises that something has changed.
“Are you okay, though?” You ask, sincere eyes peering at him. “Your talk with Daeun, I’m guessing that it all went well…?” It was hard to miss how Jungkook’s lips pull into a grin again, beaming with happiness. There was no doubt that the boy had been waiting to discuss about this topic with you. That’s what you are good for – when he had girl problems.
“I thought about it, Y/N. I really did.” He tells you, “From now on, I’m going to really focus on being her friend again – someone that she needs. And whatever feelings I have right now, I’m sure they’ll go away eventually, you know?”
“Right…they’ll go away…” Your voice echoes after Jungkook, telling yourself the same exact words. You need to pull yourself out of this tangled web of suppressed feelings before you sink in even deeper. “I’m happy for you, Kook. I really am.” A warm smile is playing on his lips when he hears your response, making you naturally returning the gesture. “By the way, we’re still on for tonight?”
His eyes widen, before muttering a curse under his breath.
“….and you forgot.”
A surge of panic flashes across Jungkook’s features, creating a little knit between his eyebrows. “It-it’s just that I promised Daeun yesterday that we’d do a movie night just like the old ti- I’m so, so, sorry, Y/N. You know how long it has been since we’ve – ”
It can’t be helped that you could only look away in slight disappointment, trying to focus on the scrambling students in the background rather than the boy in front of you. Jungkook seems to have sense your sudden change of mood, stopping himself immediately.
“Actually, I’ll just ask Daeun if we can do a raincheck. I promised you first, it’d be unfai-”
“It’s fine, Kook.” You interrupt him, suddenly feeling bad at how difficult you were making things for him. You told yourself to never be one of those girls, the ones that played mind games and guilt trip people around them. You’ve already decided that you are going to stick by his side as a good friend, and you should follow through. “You go have fun with Daeun, okay? We can just go to the new arcade another today.” A convincing smile plays at your lips, and Jungkook fails to hide the sudden look of relief on his face.
“You are seriously the best, Y/N.” He wraps his arms around you, so tightly that your laughs end up sounding like you were choking. “I’ll make it up to you next time – I swear. But for tonight, I think you should still go to the arcade, you deserve a break after your exams.” Jungkook suggests, a grin on his lips. “Besides, Taehyung would cry in happiness if he could go with you.”
“Tae? I thought you said that he was busy when I asked you to invite hi-”
Jungkook stifles a laugh, eyes shifting away from your gaze.
“-Jeon Jungkook! You didn’t invite him, again?” Your eyes narrow into slits, playfully slapping the boy on his arm. Jungkook backs away, eyes smiling so hard that you couldn’t even see them anymore. Before he runs away from your flaming wrath of fury, he shouts.
“I’ll tell Tae to meet you at 8:00!”
And it turns out that not only was your date late – but it was also different Kim that greeted you.
Kim Namjoon.
He was still catching his breath when you felt a tap on your shoulders, finding Namjoon standing before you. Even in a state of frenzy, he still manages to look strikingly handsome – expected no less from the boy who stole your heart in your high school days. He has a small dimpled smile on his lips when he shyly waves to you. You, on the other hand, did not look so pleased at the new visitor.
“Why are you here?” Your voice was cold, matching the stoic and emotionless expression on your face. “I was told that Taehyung would meet me instead.”
Namjoon frowns slightly, unable to hide his disappoint at the obvious distance that you’ve casted between the two of you. “Always the coldness, huh?” When he sees your lack of response at his comment, he quickly tries to gather your attention before you can turn your back on him. “I was beside Tae when Jungkook called him, and…kind of overheard about your plans on coming here tonight.” He pauses to take a look at whether you were actually listening or not. “Taehyung was supposed to be the one meeting you here tonight – but then he suddenly remembered about his Zoology midterm tomorrow and was kind of panicking because that kid has seriously not touched a single page of his material since school started but then he was afraid that if he told Jungkook he won’t get another chance to chill with you because Kook can be a little possessive piece of shit at tim-”
Namjoon halts when he notices your impatience ticking away – he appears to have gone off track, again. He quickly clears his throat, feeling a little jittery under your cold gaze and it’s just always been so entertaining to him how you – someone so small and endearing like you could always make him feel like a young boy with his first love. ‘Pull yourself together, Namjoon. It’s not the time to be reminiscing about how stupid you’ve been to have let this girl-“.
“I’m not here to listen about how much of a little shit Jungkook is, because I’m well aware of that already.” You calmly speak, interrupting his train of thought. There were no traces of humor on your face but Namjoon knew – that this was your way of telling a joke. It’s a little peculiar on how you expressed yourself at times but he could almost feel his heart tighten at how adorable you looked in this moment.
Namjoon chuckles softly before speaking again. “Pretty much, I watched Taehyung have a mini-mental breakdown and offered to go in his place, sincerely.”
You perch your lips. “Doesn’t seem that sincere considering that you were late for 20 minutes-”
A brown cup holder with 2 bubble teas appear within your vision, with a slightly flustered Namjoon in the back. “I wanted to surprise you with your favourite drink.” He pauses when he sees the glint in ur eyes and a hint of your smile. “And I already exchanged the tokens for the games.” You look down at his other hand and find a plastic bag with numerous silver coins.
Namjoon stands still in front of you, eyes glued on the floor - afraid to look up and face the possibility that you were already gone. Instead, a hand snatches one of the drinks and walks past him. Namjoon immediately turns around and finds you raising your eyebrows at him.
“Well, are you gonna come with? Or…” You take a sip of your drink, attempting to hide your smile.
“Y-Yeah!” Namjoon almost jumps up with enthusiasm as he follows you close behind.
By the end of the night, you’ve already lost count of how many times Joon has made you laugh so hard that you felt tears at the corners of your eyes. To his dismay, they were not intentional - most of them were attempts to be cool but all ended up being the opposite. And with only a few coins left, the both of you decided to try your luck at the claw machine.
Namjoon almost broke the glass when he walked straight into a machine that had these baby blue koala pillows. You walked towards the other side of the machine and almost squealed at how cute the koalas looked with a soft sleepy smile. You chuckle when you see that Namjoon is still staring at the dolls - cheeks squished against the glass and eyes gleaming.
Perhaps its moments like these when you remember why Namjoon is your first love.
“Okay move over, Joon. Let the master show you how its done.” You stretch dramatically and smugly jut your chin forward.
“W-wait! That’s not how it’s supposed to be! I’m supposed to be the one who-” Namjoon doesn’t even have a moment to react before you give him a light push to slide over. A finger lands on his lips, and he stares at you in mild surprise.
“Hush, young one.” You whisper under your breath, “I need to be in my zone.” In response, you receive soft laughter emitting from his lips that was soon silenced by your glare.
“It’s all yours.” He bows at you teasingly. Neither of you spoke another word when you moving the handle, with absolute silence in the background. Namjoon watches in tension as the claw starts moving towards the doll, coming down to pick at the ear-
And it misses.
“Argh!” You let out a frustrated grunt. “Stupid Kim Namjoon! You interrupted me with your loud stupid voice!” At this point, Namjoon could only look at you with a loving smile on his lips – he has realised that he was absolutely weak for you. It was unbearable for him to see how damn cute you are. The revelation bring him back to a conversation with Yoongi hyung back in his third year.
“Honestly, she is just batshit crazy!” Namjoon groans as he slams the door shut, causing a surprised Yoongi to flinch.
“I’m guessing you’re talking about Jessica?” He resumes munching on the pack of chips in his hands, eyes unfazed as he continues his Nolan marathon.
“It’s only been like – what, 2 weeks? – since we’ve started dating and she’s already throwing her temper at me!”
‘Damn, Anne Hathaway really does make a good catwoman’, Yoongi thinks.
Namjoon doesn’t notice Yoongi’s lack of attention so he continues anyways. “I was just asking my classmate, who just so happens to be a female, about our midterm and she gets so fucking jealous about it!” His voice thunders across the entire house, finally bringing Yoongi to cast a glance towards his direction. At this very moment, the new Alpha Sig recruits downstairs shudder in fear at the shouting above. A silent remainder to never piss of the VP Internal – the man is not the composed and friendly person he appears to be.
“Okay…but –”
“And the worst part? She does all this in the library where everyone is trying to study!” Namjoon flops onto Yoongi’s bed and groans, oblivious to his friend’s eyebrow twitch.
Yoongi finally puts his chips down and turns his chair to face the younger man, fingers adjusting his glasses upwards. “First of all,” He blinks, “Get. Off. My. Bed.”
It doesn’t take another word for Namjoon to quickly slide onto the floor – eyes looking up towards Yoongi, who then grunts in approval and goes back to his laptop screen.
“Second, you don’t seem to even like the chick that much. Why are you even dating her?”
“Uhh –” It takes a few moments before Namjoon speaks again. “she’s hot?” His tone sounds unconvincing to Yoongi. “Plus, Prez been telling me that Alpha Sig always goes for the hottest girls. And the Kappas, are the equivalent to hot girls.”
Yoongi laughs, not the sincere ones – but more of the single “Hah!” that he always does. “So you’re dating a bimbo – who can’t tell the difference between HIV and HPV, to show our equally intelligent President, that you got ‘game’.” Yoongi’s words drip in sarcasm. “Sounds about right, kid.”
Before Namjoon can further question his friend’s presence in the fraternity, Yoongi speaks up again to defend himself. “Like I said too many times, I’m only apart of this frat for the credentials and the singles room. Also, my fossil of a brother was like the President a few decades ago so I didn’t even need to go through hazing.”
“Didn’t Joonki sunbae-nim like graduate only two years ag–”
“As I was saying,” Yoongi interrupts him, “Look Namjoon, if the girl is someone that you truly like, then everything she does will only make you fall for her harder. Even when she’s roasting your head in flames– it’d be cute.”
Namjoon snaps out of his daze when he realises that there were no more tokens left. He sees you holding the last coin, eyes tightly shut and suddenly widening them. As you insert it into the machine, you’re mumbling some sort of good luck chant and Namjoon could finally understand what Yoongi meant.
“Yeah, definitely cute.” He whispers.
You snap your head to the left. “What did you say?” Your attention on Namjoon was short-lived because before he could respond with some lame, made-up answer, the happy tune starts playing from the machine again.
“One last time, I got this!”
A little more right…more…mor–perfect!
You clench your eyes shut to press the button, slightly hesistant to make the final move. And right before you press your finger down, Namjoon stealthily tilts the handle towards the left. Oblivious to the change, you bob your head excitedly along with the music as the the two of you watch the claw coming down and catches the koala right in the centre.
You let out a squeal that catches the attention of your neighbours, who consisted of other college students releasing their stress on a Wednesday night. Oh yeah, Namjoon was definitely getting some familiar stares. “Joon! I did it!” You jump up and down whilst slapping your hand against his arm. He happily grins at you in return.
“Yeah, you did.”
The impatience and excitement running in your blood makes you pick up the pillow before it is even released from the claw. And in your arms, the pillow feels exactly as soft as it looks. As you gently brush your hands against the plushie, you notice that the koala’s smile oddly reminds you of Namjoon himself. It takes a short moment before you remember to hand the prize towards Namjoon. “Here! For you.”
If you were trying to hide the fact that you really like the doll as well– you failed miserably. The president was not short of being called ignorant by other girls, but let’s just say that the ignorance was selective. Instead, he just playfully pinches your cheeks and softly shakes his head.
“No, you keep it.” Namjoon pushes the prize back towards you. “You’re the one who got it.”
“Yeah, but I said that I’d win it for yo-”
“I have a lot of stuffed animals in my bedroom already. Don’t worry about it.”
You look up towards Namjoon, “You sure?” He nods in reassurance, lips pulling into a wide grin when you jump up in happiness. If you weren’t so occupied with your newly prized possession, you would be able to see that Namjoon looks at you as if you were the galaxy itself.
“Come on, let’s go.” He nudges you on the shoulder. “I’ll walk you home.”
The walk back was calm with a comfortable silence between the two of you. The stars above twinkled in the clear sky. For the first time since forever, you feel as if you can face Namjoon with a smile again.
Everybody deserves a second chance– you think to yourself.
Sure, Namjoon is your first love, but he was also your friend and confidant before you let your feelings control the best of you. And whatever that happened in your first year, he already apologised. There shouldn’t be a reason for you to hold onto the past if it only makes you miserable.
Your thoughts are interrupted when Namjoon clears his throat.
“It’s your stop.” He tilts his head in the direction of your apartment building– with a smile that has never left his lips for the entire night.
“Oh, right. Sorry, I was totally dazing off-”
“Actually, I have something to tell you.” He speaks up again, unsure whether he should continue. But when you are looking at him without a hint of hostility in your eyes, he takes it as sign to keep going.
“I just– I want to properly apologise for what I did back then.” Namjoon’s eyes stay on your own, unwavering and focused. “I wish I had a good reason, but I really don’t. My judgement was clouded by my peers and– wait no– I shouldn’t blame it on someone else.” His gaze on you lowers, letting his bangs cover his eyes. “I became too engrossed at how others saw me– I wanted to fit in so badly.” A sigh escapes from Namjoon’s lips.
“Joon, it’s okay. I get it.” You walk towards the boy, fingers softly brushing the hair falling down on his face. “We all make mistakes-”
“No, Peanut, it’s not okay.” Namjoon gives himself a moment before continuing. “I wanted to be validated by people who wanted me to be someone I wasn’t. So I did things– things that I shouldn’t have done and…hurt the people that meant the world to me.” He takes a short breath in between. “No, they still mean the world to me.” The last part came out as a soft murmur and Namjoon regretted it instantly.
He needed to tell you how he truly feels about you– no more hiding and being afraid.
You suddenly feel warmth against your hand, finding Namjoon’s hand wrapped around your own, so tightly as if he was afraid that you would disappear. “I must right my wrongs. And this time, I won’t hesitate to chase after what I want.” His brown eyes pierce into yours and all the uneasiness was now determination.
“I won’t let you go– not this time.”
“Just come meet me at the frat house first! The guys miss you, especially Taehyung.” A voice blares through your phone, “I don’t get why you’re suddenly avoiding the place.”
You let out an unamused grunt across the line. “I just– I don’t wanna.” A few seconds of silence pass through before Jungkook speaks again.
“Did something happen?” His voice comes out to be a lot more serious, changing the atmosphere of the conversation immediately. “If one of the guys did anything to you, I swear– ”
“Nothing happened, Kook!” A surge of panic rushes through you, not wanting Jungkook to overreact. “Fine, I’ll come. Meet you in 10?” You can feel Jungkook beaming in victory across the other line.
“See you!” He exclaims before you hang up in him.
The walk to Alpha Sig took less than 10 minutes, but that was considering the fact that you walked in a rather brisk pace. Before you knew it, you find yourself in front of the familiar brown building with white pillars. Upon entering, Jin immediately gives you his warmest smile and greets you.
“Y/N! It’s been a while. Looking for Jungkook?”
A nervous smile casts upon your face, hoping not to dwell in the foyer for too long. Jin doesn’t fail to notice how your eyes were dodgy and looking around the house as if you were searching for someone.
“Or are you avoiding someone?” He teases.
“Maybe– both?” You reply sheepishly.
Jin chuckles to himself, amused to the ordeal that you were going through. “He just left like an hour ago, said something about writing his midterm paper.”
Relief rushes through you as you say thanks to Jin before running up the stairs and heads straight to Jungkook’s room.
As you close the door behind you, Jungkook bounces up from his bed and comes to you with his signature bunny grin. “You’re finally here!” He sings, “God, that 10 minutes felt like forever.”
You can’t help but chuckle at how adorable he was. Sometimes you wonder if Jeon Jungkook is the same infamous campus fuck boy that you first met him as – which brings to you realise, Jungkook hasn’t seem to be sleeping around lately. Not since the two of you have been practically seeing each other every single day. Although the past week has been a little different, with Jungkook sometimes cancelling on you or telling you that he wasn’t in the studio.
Nonetheless– he was still your good friend.
“So, Kook,” You walk to his desk chair and sit down. “What do you want to do today?”
“Actually, I kind of wanted to go to this new vegan place downtown. But I just checked the weather report and it’s going to rain soon.” Jungkook looks like a disappointed toddler who got his candy taken away when he mentions the forecast. “I really wanted to bring you there because I know how much you love that health conscious stuff.”
“It’s alright.” You reassure him, giving him a soft tickle on the chin. “You know I’d always be down for a movie and delivery.”
“But we always do that.” Jungkook furrows his eyebrows, “I want to do more– I don’t know– date stuff?” The last part comes out soft, as if he was shy about saying it.
“Date stuff?” Now this boy was just making you very confused.
Jungkook scratches his ear, looking a little perplexed. “I mean like, dates between friends.” He speaks quickly, unsure himself of where this conversation was heading.
“Jungkook, leave all the fun date ideas and whatnot for when you actually start dating someone that you like.” Your tone is laidback and playful. And for a moment, it almost looks like Jungkook’s eyes are brimming with hidden emotions. You quickly brush away any speculations though, because Jungkook would never– yeah, you definitely thought wrong.
“But when you’re with your good ol’ pal– me. You know I’d be good with just chilling and doing absolutely nothing.”
“But-”
“No buts.” You interrupt him, with a sneaky grin on your face. “Now quickly choose a movie and a place where we can stuff our faces with food from.”
Jungkook looks at you for a short moment before giving you a smile. “Yeah, okay.”
“I’m going to take a quick shower first, okay? The walk here made me kind of sweaty and gross.” When he gives you a brief nod, you walk into his closet to grab a clean towel. It never fails to amuse you how organised Jungkook was when it comes to doing his laundry. Perhaps you should make him start doing your dirty laundry for you. You grab the one with a giant pig nose print on it – that brat bought it especially for you to use – and head to the bathroom. “You better be done choosing when I’m finished!” You pressure the boy behind you, who just laughs and throws his clean t-shirt in your way.”
“Aye aye Captain.”
Stepping out of the bathtub, you pat yourself dry before slipping into Jungkook’s tee and your own sweats. Right before you were about to open the door, you notice that there were voices on the other side. “Is Hobi back?” You mumble to yourself but then realise that it was a female voice. It starts with quiet and unstable sobbing, gradually calming down before the girl whispers her next words.
“Kookie, help me forget. Please.”
There is something unsettling stirring inside of you that made you feel like that things are about to go wrong, very wrong.
Jungkook sighs softly on the other side. “I-I can’t. This is wrong.”
You didn’t want to intrude on Jungkook’s privacy so you decided that it was best to stay in the bathroom until the matter was solved. It wasn’t like you wanted to eavesdrop into their conversation but they were not exactly being discreet with their voices. Silence fills the air before someone speaks again.
“It didn’t stop you from the first time.” It was the girl again.
“Stop mentioning that.” His voice bursts in pain. “I deeply regret for making it happen.” The agony in Jungkook’s voice makes your own heart to ache. And there is only one person you can think of who could make Jungkook suffer like that. “We shouldn’t have done that to J-”
“Well guess what?” She pauses before screaming the next part. “Fuck Jimin!” You start to hear louder sobs on the other side. “I can’t do this anymore, I should have chosen you instead. You wouldn’t have treated me like this, right?”
Jimin? What the hell was going on? All the puzzle pieces come together when you realise that it must be Daeun who was speaking to Jungkook outside, but the conversation was just making you very confused. Your scattered thoughts keep you deeply bothered for a few long minutes, blocking on the noises from outside. You were unsure of when to step outside the bathroom, but you knew that you couldn’t stay in here forever.
Oh screw it. You turn the knob and push the door open.
Stepping out of the bathroom, you were definitely not prepared to see what was in front of you. Lee Daeun was sitting atop of Jungkook – the two of them half dressed and passionately making out and with obvious intentions to go even further.
So this is what Daeun meant by ‘making her forget’.
“What. The. Actual. Fuck.”
You don’t even try to conceal the amount of displeasure in your voice, immediately grabbing the attention of the two bodies on the bed. When Jungkook sees you in his vision– it was like he has woken up from a trance – his eyes widen as he cusses under his breath. Jungkook quickly pushes Daeun off of him and sit upright in attempt to gain whatever composure he had left.
“F-fuck. Y/N, I can explain.” He stutters, flustered and ashamed of whatever that was going on. Jungkook struggles to fix his pants as Daeun sits on the corner of his bed with her head down.
You were not proud of your bad temper, but at this moment it was really something that you couldn’t control.
“This really crosses the line, Jeon.” You hiss, no patience to listen to what he had to say. “I didn’t give a shit when you were just sleeping around, but ruining relationships? And atop of that, a relationship between your two close friends?” Stepping towards Jungkook, you refuse to break any eye contact before whispering your next words.
“Now that’s low.”
Your statement has undoubtedly stab Jungkook right where it hurts the most. He lowers his head in shame, unable to face you. Instead, it’s another voice that speaks up– one that you were not very fond of.
“Stop criticising when you have no idea what is going on!” Daeun glares at you from the corner of his bed, eyes red and swollen from the crying. “Kookie has just been helping me with my problems with Jimin.”
Now you know that it must be your bias speaking, but you just didn’t have the tolerance to deal with Daeun and her little victim act. Not right now.
“No offence, Daeun.” Your laugh was humourless. “But I wasn’t talking to you.” You seethe. Before she can retaliate, Jungkook shoots a glare at her way to make her quiet down.
A few moments of silence sits dangerously in the atmosphere. You feel like your mentality was going haywire with all the emotions running inside of you. Anger? Disappointment? Or was it heartbreak?
Right before you decided that you did not want to be in this room anymore, Jungkook speaks up. He runs his fingers through his hair, looking visibly distressed.
“Daeun, do you think you can go home first?” He says softly, “I need to talk to Y/N.”
She nods timidly as she dresses herself and makes her way to the door. Right before she exits, Daeun gives the two of you another glance and leaves.
When you are positive that she has left, you find yourself releasing a breath that you didn’t know you were holding. Energy strained and tired, you turn your back and start walking towards Hoseok’s bed to sit down.
To be completely honest, you had no idea how to face this situation. You aren’t sure of how you were supposed to feel in this situation.
‘You are his friend, nothing more.’ These words loops in your head before you start talking again.
“Jungkook, I can’t help you get over this heartbreak if you keep walking right into it.” You whisper. “Can’t you see that all of this is really unhealthy?”
Jungkook finally looks up and makes eye contact with you. His eyes are lost– so fragile as if they will shatter if you were not careful. “She said that she will leave Jimin soon. And-” He smiles weakly at you. “I really believe that-”
And that pisses you off – all your attempts to help Jungkook when he didn’t even want to be helped. It was frustrating to watch him put himself in this situation, he deserves so much better. You knew the next words would hurt him, but they were also necessary.
“If she had the intention of leaving Jimin, she would’ve done it before she start ‘this’ with you! She is using you for her own selfish reasons.” You don’t even realise how fervent your voice has gotten. “You are just her toy, Jungkook.”
The anger in his eyes almost frightens you, he has never looked at you with so much resentment. Jungkook’s fists are clenched as he starts walking in your direction, stopping when his face was right in front of yours.
“Why can’t you just be happy for me!” Jungkook has never raised his voice at you like this. “You know what?” He exasperates, “This is why I didn’t want to tell you. I knew you’d judge me like this.” A low growl sits in his throat. “Do you just want everyone to be miserable and pathetic like you?”
The moment that those words left from his lips, he could feel regret flowing through his veins.
“Fuck. I-I don’t mean it that wa-”
His hand reaches out to grab onto your wrists, but before he could – you had taken a step back and the look in your eyes make Jungkook feel disgusted at himself. He is struggling to put the words he actually meant to say together but when he searches for your eyes again, you had already left him alone in his room.
You slam the door shut behind you, skidding to a stop when you see the boys staring right at you. Jin tries to give you a hug but your hand gently brushes it away. No, you couldn’t break down right in front of them, not when Jungkook was just right behind. Without saying another word to them, you ignored their worried expressions and sprint down the stairs.
Jungkook was right, it was raining outside.

Paper Tubes
Paper Tubes from Ace Paper Tube
I. What is a Paper Tube?
Paper tubes consist of paper or paperboard sheet layers wound together to form strong, hollow, and usually cylindrical shapes. The paper layers are laminated or bonded together using adhesives. The wall thickness of the tube can vary depending on the number of layers wrapped during manufacturing.
Paper tubes are also known as paper cores, paperboard tubes, paper cans, fiber drums with paper drum machine, fiber tubes, paper tubing, wound tubes, composite cans, coreboard tubes, and cardboard tubes. While widely used everywhere, the term "cardboard tube" is a misnomer. Cardboard consists of three kraft layers with the central layer corrugated.
II. Paper Tube Types and Shapes
Paper Tube and Core Types
While paper tubes, paper cores and related products are all made from wound plies of paper or paperboard. Paper tubes with paper tube cutting machine or cores can be constructed from one, two or many plies of brown kraft paper or paperboard.
The innermost layer or ply, the liner, and the outermost layer, the wrap, can consist of different materials (foil, film, etc.) or specialized paper. The specialized paper and materials can provide water resistance, graphics or labeling, or a specific color.
The two main types of paper tubes and cores include spiral wound and convolute or parallel wound paper tubes. Convolute wound tubes are used in applications requiring high bend strength, crush resistance and dynamic strength.
A spiral wound tube has the paper ply or plies wrapped around at an angle to the tube's axis. In convolute tubes, the outer two edges of the paper strip are wrapped parallel or at a 90-degree angle to the tube‘s axis.
Paper tubes have thinner walls and are widely used as containers or packaging for products with paper packaging machine.
A paper core is essentially a heavy-walled paper tube. The much thicker wall of paper cores enables their use in winding webs or sheets of flexible material into rolls in converting operations.
Paper machines produce extremely large rolls (also known as machine, jumbo, tambour or mother rolls), which are rotary slit or converted into many narrower smaller rolls on a winder with a paperboard core. Similar jumbo rolls are converted in plastic film, foil, textile and coated abrasive plants.
You will be surprised that not all paper tubes are geared toward packaging applications. Paper cores can be machine elements. Paper cores used for winding large rolls in a paper mill or plastic film production plant are machine elements and require extremely high strength paper cores, which are often convoluted.
Paper cores for retail or small diameter width rolls of adhesive tape, label, foil, paper, tissue or plastic film are a packaging and dispensing product, which can consist of a thinner, spiral wound core.
The paper tube material is rotary or saw cut into paper cans or composite cans, shipping tubes, push tubes, pyrotechnic tubes, display poles, converting cores, concrete piling forms, and other paper tube products.
Large fiber or composite drums and even paper straws are manufactured in a similar winding process. Convolute winders are typically used to make composite drums, which are a more eco-friendly alternative to steel drums. Paper straws are spiral wound at very high speeds.
Paper Tube Shapes
You will find that most paper tubes have a cylindrical shape or round cross-section, but paper tubes can be made with square, oval, hexagonal, triangular, and other custom shapes by using a square, oval and custom shaped winding mandrel. Custom shapes are useful for fitting the tube specifically to a part or product shape while eliminating wasted space and additional spacers or packing material.
Tapered paper tubes or paper cones are wound with a cone-shaped mandrel. Paper cones are used as yarn carriers in the textile industry.
For certain applications, you may want your paper tubes slit or cut along their length to make half-shells such as facilitates covering large rolls for protection. They can be reconnected with tape or h-profiles. You will find covering a paper roll or coiled steel roll easier with half-shells compared to sliding a roll into a large protective paper tube.
III. How Are Paper Tubes Made?
Paper Tube and Core Manufacturing
Paper tube and core manufacturing is a paper converting process combining web slitting, web winding and lamination or adhesive bonding steps. Through multiple wraps or revolutions of one or more paper webs or ribbons around a steel mandrel, several layers or plies of paper or paperboard are laminated together around a steel mandrel to form rigid, high strength tubes or fiber cores with paper core making machine.
In my experience, plies are usually around 2 to 10 inches (50 to 250 mm) wide, but in some plies are as wide as 20 inches (500 mm). Ply thicknesses are typically around 0.008 to 0.050 (0.2 to 1.3 mm). The number of plies ranges from 1 to 50 or more, but paper cores with 3 to 30 plies are more common.
We find that the strength of paper core is a function of the paperboard ply bond strength, ply thickness, bond area or overlap and adhesive bond strength. What I find interesting is that paperboards are made in a single thicker papermaking process or by bonding or laminating several plies together, so some paper tubes can consist of laminations or laminated plies!
To me, a review of related patents and technology definitions in the USPTO website can help provide a greater understanding and in-depth details on the paper tube making process. Subclass B31C provides the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) cooperative patent classification (CPC) and technology definitions for paper or wound tube manufacturing processes. B31C 9/00 is defined as "Simultaneous forming of cylindrical and conical shapes by winding separate webs, e.g. forming bottles".
The paper tube making process can include winding, folding and bending depending on the specific shape (round, square, conical, etc.) desired in the finished end product.
Spiral Paper Tube or Core Manufacturing
In the spiral paper tube or core manufacturing process with paper core machine, jumbo rolls of paper, paperboard, and lining materials are converted in a rotary slitting operation with paper slitting machine into narrower width ribbons. The paper ribbons are rewound into narrow rolls on rewinding stands.
The narrow paper ribbon rolls are stacked in what looks to me like giant stacks of "poker chips". The "poker chip" stacks or rolls of paper ribbon are transported and loaded into the tube manufacturing machine.
Narrow paper webs or ribbons from several different rolls are passed through guides and attached, adhered or taped to a steel mandrel in an overlapping fashion or with spacing between leading edges of the paper ribbons. The festooning or spacing allows the ribbons to feed without interference between ribbons.
You will see that by attaching the leading edge or end of the ribbon obliquely or at an angle less than 90 degrees to the axis of the mandrel, the result is the formation of spiral during winding.
The outer diameter of the steel mandrel determines the inner diameter of the finished paper tube. The wall thickness of the tube is a function of the thickness of the paper or paperboard ribbons, the adhesive thickness and the number of ribbons used in the process.
Adhesive or glue is applied to each paper ribbon or ply before being wound onto the steel mandrel. In my experience coating webs of paper, cloth, vulcanized fibre and plastic film, a variety of web coaters can apply the adhesive to the plies such as:
Roll coaters
Reverse roll coaters
Slot die coaters
Extrusion coaters
Curtain coaters
Brush coaters
Spray coaters
Blade coaters
Metering bar coaters
Dip coaters
What‘s fascinating is how the paper tube belt twists around in a helical shape to continuously form and bond the paper tube plies together. The flexible belt wraps around and applies pressure to the paper layers, which assures the proper formation of adhesive bonds between the paper ribbons. The fabric reinforced rubber belt also advances the tube forward along the mandrel.
I have to imagine that the stresses and performance requirements on the paper tube forming belt are enormous. These belts are endless or seamless and prevent marking. They have high tensile strength and high friction to grab and move the tube along and easy to clean. Nitta, Passaic, Rainbow are some of the suppliers of tube forming belts.
Next, we see that as additional paper plies are added at one end of the paper tube forming mandrel, the formed or laminated paper tube slides off the other end of the mandrel and is cut to length using rotary blade slicing or offline sawing operations. Additional deburring of the tube end edge may be performed depending on the end-use.
Another interesting aspect of the paper tube manufacturing process to me is the ability to make an enormous amount of highly customized paper tube product or materials combinations by using different material plies.
Liner or lining layers are used on the inner diameter (first ribbon) or outer diameter (last ribbon) of the tube to improve water resistance, moisture resistance or grease resistance. Liners can consist of metal sheet, foil, coated paper (wax, silicone, or plastic), plastic film and other protective materials.
If your current application is not satisfied with existing paper tubes, you can well imagine a custom paper tube manufacturer can engineer a new combination of liners, plies and wraps to meet the needs of your specialized application. As long as the order volume is sufficient.
One great ability I find in paper tube manufacturing is the ability to provide branding through labeling or print to enhance marketing inside and out. If printed or decorative graphics are required on the inside or outside of the paper tube, then the printed paper ribbons or ribbons made of printable material can be used on the first and last ribbons. A white paper or paperboard could be used on the outer layer with stronger brown kraft paper used on the inner layers.
Convolute Paper Tube or Core Manufacturing
In the parallel or convolute paper tube or core manufacturing process, jumbo rolls of paper, paperboard, and lining materials are converted in a slitting operation, but not into the very narrow width ribbons used in spiral tube manufacturing. In the convolute paper tube or core manufacturing process, the leading edge of the ribbon is parallel to the axis of the paper tube mandrel, so a single seam or flap along the length of the paper tube results.
An external metal roll can apply pressure instead of a belt, which squeezes out any voids or air pockets providing better contact of the adhesive and therefore a stronger adhesive bond between paper plies. Since the paper web is wider, higher pressures and tension can be applied in the convolute winding process. The higher pressures and tensions in convolute paper tube manufacturing result in tubes with higher strength compared to the spiral wound tubes.

SP Ultraflex’s ROBOSLIT impresses Constantia Parikh
Vienna-based Constantia is one of the largest flexible packaging manufacturers globally. It now has several plants in India based on its acquisitions of Parikh Packaging and Creative Polypack. It also set up a Greenfield plant for its recyclable PE-based flexible packaging plant called Constantia Ecoflex in Ahmedabad, inaugurated in 2019. We are producing an edited version of an interview of Ahmedabad-based Pragnesh Shah, plant head of the Constantia Parikh Packaging sub-cluster below.
Please tell us a bit about the inception of Constantia Parikh Packaging and its area of focus within the flexible packaging segment.
Pragnesh Shah – Constantia Parikh Packaging was formed in 2013, when the Parikh family, promoters of Parikh Packaging, welcomed the Constantia Flexibles group as partners. Regular investments in infrastructure, systems, and plant and machinery enabled the company to grow 3x, and the monthly output now stands at 1800 MT. In 2017, we decided to venture into 100% recyclable laminates and set up our new state of art plant ‘Ecoflex’ in 2019. We launched ‘Ecolam,’ a 100% PE-based laminate to replace aluminum foil from the new unit. By 2025, we plan for 100% of all consumer and pharma packaging to be recyclable, reflecting our commitment to society for environmental friendliness.
Can you help us with an overview of the plant and machinery in your company?
Pragnesh Shah – We started with indigenous machines but were let down in terms of performance. As a result, we shifted to European and Korean technology. We are happy to share that after seeing improvements in Indian machines over the years, we have come full circle today. Most of the recent additions to our plant are from reputed Indian manufacturers.
Being one of the oldest and most reputed converters in the region, we would like to know how important the role of slitting rewinding machines in the overall process of converting is?
Pragnesh Shah – Slitting is usually the last process before the final product is delivered to our customer. Most of our customers are from the food industry and cannot afford stoppages in their packing lines due to slitting defects. In addition, slitting defects can undo all the efforts made in the printing and lamination processes. Therefore, we feel it is essential to invest in the best technology for slitter rewinders, mainly because their cost is a small fraction of the total investment.
Which performance parameters are critical and which features are ‘must haves’ on a good slitter rewinder?
Pragnesh Shah – First and foremost, the ITM (Intelligent tension management), is an absolute must to reduce dependency on operator expertise. Here, the PLC computes and maintains the tension levels suitable to the job. I see the next level of automation in the area of the job setup. The hygiene factor is also very important for food and pharma customers, and a close study of the layout from this perspective is most essential while finalizing the machine. Lastly, I would stress the static management system, which will soon be the need of the hour as more and more customers switch to high-speed packing machines that are most intolerant to residual static.
After installing multiple dual turret slitter machines worldwide, how has your experience with this technology been so far?
Pragnesh Shah – Slitter rewinders with dual turret rewinds are the order of the day in these competitive times where the focus is to increase efficiency. Unlike duplex slitters, these machines run virtually non-stop, offering higher productivity, improved efficiency of man and machine, and optimal use of floor space. Consistency in performance is also higher as compared to duplex machines. Opting for dual turret slitters would also reduce the total number of slitters required to support a given plant capacity over a period of time.
You installed a ROBOSLIT machine from SP Ultraflex a few months back. How was your experience?
Pragnesh Shah – The OHP version of the Roboslit was installed at our plant in February 2021, and we have found its performance to be at par with the best in the world. The team at SP Ultralflex puts in a lot of effort in learning, researching, and understanding the customer’s pain areas and channelizes their inputs to their design department, leading to continuous improvements and innovations. They are also very supportive, understanding the significance of our queries, and give clear and meaningful answers.
Pragnesh Shah, plant head of the Constantia Parikh Packaging sub-cluster[/caption]
In general, most converters prefer compact, rear-loading slitter rewinders. But you have purchased the overhead model of the Roboslit series, the Roboslit OHP. What made you go for that model?
Pragnesh Shah – The most admirable quality in the OHP version is the overhead web movement. Substrates running between idle rollers at high speed tend to develop static charge and attract dust. This is not acceptable, especially when it comes to food and pharma customers. The substrate is always at a good distance from the floor level in the OHP layout, leaving no scope for the dust to contaminate its surface. Other advantages of the overhead path include easy access to the cutting section and better visibility of the running substrate. Last but not least, this layout improves the safety quotient of the machine – something that is non-negotiable within the Constantia Flexibles group.
To what extent did SP Ultraflex meet the expectations of Constantia Flexibles in terms of output, quality, operator friendliness, and safety standards?
Pragnesh Shah – To start with, safety and user-friendliness are of utmost importance to Constantia Flexibles, and both these aspects are well taken care of in the machine. Coming to the output, I have already spoken about the increased productivity of this machine by virtue of its dual turret rewind. I want to share another important dimension, which affects productivity – the ratio of rework. We have seen a drastic reduction in the percentage of narrow width coils that need to be edge corrected on doctoring machines, thanks to the better quality of finished reels produced on this machine.
How, in your opinion, does the SP machine compare with the European make machines in your plant?
Pragnesh Shah – It is a good indigenous technology at par with global standards, with certain additional features and a good team.
What is the future focus for Constantia Parikh Packaging in terms of capital equipment technology? As mentioned earlier, we are looking for indigenous machines which will fulfill our requirements and expectations. We have a robust technical evaluation team that defines the ‘what’ and ‘why.’ If all such conditions and expectations are fulfilled, we would prefer Indian make machines, thereby supporting the Make in India movement.

Bracken: Professor Raoul X Posted on January 14, 2011
Western Rifle Shooters Association
It was late June and I was sitting in a café seven hundred miles from home, doing a little web surfing. There was plenty of room at mid-morning, so I could sit at the end of the coffee bar with my laptop. I was scanning the breaking news about the new mass-shooting. Like most people I was morbidly fascinated with the deranged young man who was the killer. That is, the trigger puller. But I was looking over his shoulder for something else: signs of a guiding hand.
Why? Because I know something about the subject.
You see, being a guiding hand is my life’s avocation. My secret avocation, that is. Outwardly I’m a tenured professor of sociology at a Mid-western university. A life-long bachelor, so my summers are my own. Ostensibly for writing, research, quiet reflection, bungee jumping or what have you. My summer hobby is traveling and meeting interesting people. Everything I do on these road trips can be explained under the rubric of field research, but even so I pay with cash and move like a ghost. I’m old school. It’s a harmless quirk. Nobody cares.
I suppose if you polled my students, they’d declare me to be left wing, but not a rhetorical bomb-thrower. Am I closer to Karl Marx than to Ayn Rand? Well, naturally. Progressive politics were part of my upbringing and education. And of course that is also the best way to get along in academia, and I do like to get along.
No question my academic career has been lackluster. That does not concern me. I have no wife or significant other to be concerned with my apparent lack of greater ambition or wealth. Seeking publication for papers that a few academic gnomes might eventually peruse does not interest me in the least. Writing some groundbreaking tome that will be reviewed in the New York Times and read by millions is not a realistic aspiration. I am no Jared Diamond in the rough. I won academic tenure, and that was enough. I have a house and a ten-year-old Beamer. I enjoy my little comforts. A small circle of friends, none close. I’d be the first to admit it’s been a mediocre life—outwardly.
But my secret life has been anything but mediocre. I have engineered extraordinary events, but truth be told, there is little joy in secret celebration. So I am creating this document, properly encoded and hidden, to save for posterity. When my unsurpassed run is finally over, due either to my natural demise or other more precipitous causes, my secret history will conjure itself from millions of computer screens unfiltered, unspun and uncut. The truth will be known. This is my story, and no one can take it from me. My name will ring down through the ages, when my complete story is told!
But not yet. There is more secret work to be done.
I did not drive seven hundred miles to ponder my life’s ledger and tap on a keyboard. What interested me was the creature standing on the other side of the white coffee shop counter. The gaunt, long-haired young man by the espresso machine could have been taken for a college student in a college town. Really not too bad looking in person. Pushing six feet, skinny. Gray-blue eyes, a little too closely set. Decent complexion for his age. Maybe a few days since his mouse-colored hair had been washed or properly brushed, but overall he was quite presentable. Duncan it said on his plastic name tag. I already knew that his last name was McClaren. I wasn’t in this picturesque college town by accident. I was here to meet him, but he didn’t know this.
Duncan McClaren was one of the most promising prospects I’d run down in years. My own students unknowingly provide me with many of my leads. We have free-ranging discussions, in and out of the classroom setting. From practice I know how to guide them toward a discussion of the weirdest people they’ve ever known. Duncan went to high school with one of my female students. His first name was mentioned casually by the student, tossed off her lips and promptly forgotten. Duncan sometimes heard voices, she said. Talked to himself. And he could not stop talking about whatever obsessed him at the moment. He cut right into conversations among people he hardly knew, and went off onto bizzaro-world tangents. And what really set him off was the country’s most famous talk radio host.
Following that disclosure I did my own internet research. There was only one Duncan listed in her year at her high school. As a professor, I stay on the cutting edge of internet trickery. A critical part of my secret avocation involves doing internet research without leaving digital fingerprints. My students constantly come up with what they believe to be new ways to cheat or plagiarize without detection, so I’ve become somewhat of an expert at internet security. I do not take risks. I’m a very careful person. Typing this secret history and hiding it inside my computer is perhaps the biggest risk I’ve taken.
In the course of my background investigation I learned that he had been expelled or otherwise ejected from high school numerous times. He’d been arrested and he’d been to juvenile boot camp. There were a number of sealed records and denied files, both medical and legal. But reading between the lines of what I could access, it was a safe guess that there had been serious drug use and there had been family violence. Rumors of arson at a very young age. His family had money and pull, and he was accepted for admission to an out-of-state institution of higher learning. His brief transcript was telling. His GPA for three completed semesters was made up equally of As and Fs. He had not finished his second year. No reason was given.
Since dropping out of college Duncan had been adrift for a year, hitchhiking around the country, supporting himself mostly as a dish washer or at other menial short-term jobs involving limited social interaction. On his own walkabout journey of self-discovery, to give him the benefit of the doubt. He was for the moment a barista in this New England college town, and I arranged for our paths to cross.
It’s always an intense moment, my first close look at a subject I’ve known only as an internet phantom. Duncan came over to take my order: regular coffee, with cream and sugar. When he filled my cup I laid a few dollars on the counter.
Duncan tapped the bills and said matter-of-factly, “So, somebody still believes in paper money.”
I looked directly at him and replied, “For some things, yes. Like paying for coffee.”
He returned my gaze, his eyes narrowed to slits and he said, “Smart. Fly under the radar. Render unto Caesar—while you can. But it’s all just a matter of time. Just a matter of time.” He slowly nodded his head, as if agreeing with himself.
To release his floodgates all I had to ask him was, “What do you mean?” Then I listened attentively to a five minute diatribe covering many tediously familiar theories and a few original ones. A thirtyish female with a severe hairstyle, whom I guessed was the café’s manager, edged over and tried to redirect my waiter. “Dunc,” she said breezily, “You’re not bothering this man, are you? No more talking about that bank stuff, right?”
Holding the full pot of hot coffee he slowly turned his entire body and fixed an icy glare upon her, but said nothing. He held his stare, boring into her with flat eyes. His arm seemed tensed to hurl the burning-hot brew at her. Her smile wilted, she turned and walked away. “She doesn’t understand,” said Duncan when she was gone. “Her mind is closed to the reality around her.”
“Does that bother you?” I asked him.
“I’m used to it. Ninety percent of humanity is closed off to reality.”
I laughed and said, “I think you’re giving humanity too much credit.”
He smiled in a peculiar way. One side of his mouth went up markedly while the other side remained nearly flat. “Yeah. Probably. Look, I have to serve some other humanity or I’m going to get canned. I’m on thin ice around here.”
Twenty-year-old Duncan, who had a post-graduate’s demeanor and a startlingly high IQ, had never held a job for longer than a month. He could operate independently in society as a functioning adult in most situations. He could shop for himself and drive a car. He’d briefly kept an apartment in college. But he could not hold a conversation without promptly veering into the Bush-family CIA dynasty, the truth about 9-11, the Jewish bankers, right-wing talk radio and God help me, the Queen of England.
Duncan was a bug. A raving lunatic. Yet in his outward appearance and mannerisms, he was as normal as you and I. But what does one’s outward appearance signify? The faces we show to the world are mere avatars, are they not? Who truly knows our inner hearts, our souls if you will? No one. Certainly not a God who doesn’t exist. So am I normal? Define normal. A sophomoric tautology. Yes, outwardly I can easily pass as normal, and I have for most of my forty-seven years. But inside? Honestly, what a question. Who wants to be no more than a random semi-conscious insect in a hive of billions?
Not me. No, I’m not normal, and have no desire to be.
Normal means average, and let me assure you, I’m way above average. Average people don’t make it their life’s work to ferret out certain types of borderline personalities and convert them into useful tools. As far as I know, I’m the only human toolmaker of my kind. No semi-sentient insect brain resides within my skull, making me a slave to laws, traditions or norms of so-called acceptable behavior. I operate outside of the rules of the hive, and I enjoy a freedom mere insects can never know. So what, you say? I’ll say what. By my actions I have personally changed the course of history, and I will do so again.
Can you say the same thing? What “normal” hive insect can claim to have done that?
Have there been others like me? I tend to think so, but it’s an area of pure conjecture. A familiar example. Most Americans dismissed the story of James Earl Ray’s mysterious helper, known only to him as “Raoul,” as a self-serving fantasy. I always thought that Raoul was more flesh than fantasy. James Earl Ray’s actions and travels before and after Memphis make me believe that he had assistance of the kind that I have given to some very special people.
If you take a ‘Parallax View’ of history, you might allow the possibility that rogue government agencies or other cliques could also be grooming likely candidates, but I tend not to believe in elaborate conspiracies. Could it happen? I suppose. But in my experience, no conspiracy involving a large cast of characters can remain a secret for many years.
On the other hand, the temporary private relationship between a mentor and a singular student, that relationship can indeed be kept a secret. My writing this secret history in freedom instead of in captivity proves that this is so. And even if one of my human tools is someday arrested alive, his mad barkings will be disregarded. His minor side-story of a mysterious helper, if heard at all, will be disregarded as just another in his cornucopia of delusions.
Converting a certain type of lunatic into a useful tool is not too difficult when you understand the dynamics that are in play. Practice makes perfect, and I’ve had a lot of practice. Good candidates for a direct action mission are often quite intelligent, at least as measured on certain scales. They can navigate by themselves between cities, and arrive at a place and time without causing alarm to the general population.
But in my experience the best candidates for a guiding hand are not true “loners.” They often seek friendship and employment, and they may even succeed for a while. But the men who interest me invariably sabotage their social relationships by compulsively discussing their paranoid obsessions. Each human rejection adds heat to their simmering rage. Yet still they crave human companionship, and simple affirmation of their delusional belief systems. This makes them soft putty at my touch. These men, deftly guided, become my arrows. To the world, these arrows seem to plunge at random from the clear blue sky. Sometimes they do, but not always!
It’s not hard to convert a lump of inchoate anger into an arrow. At first all I do is offer them a receptive ear, and confirmation that they are not alone in their beliefs. Our dialogues lead me toward the best approach to take. I adapt my temporary cover story to fit my current subject’s preexisting delusional views. In the past I’ve pretended to be a liaison from the CIA, from Mossad, from Al Qaeda. I’ve posed as a former leading member of the Trilateral Commission, now working against their globalist designs. Sometimes I’ve convinced them that their medications are part of a conspiracy to chemically lobotomize them, robbing them of their most brilliant insights.
After a few private conversations I eventually steer the subject to “doing something really important.” Hypothetically, of course. At least at first. Then we play a conversational game of, “If I could, I would.” A good prospect will soon be describing the precise medieval tortures, punishments and execution methods merited by his worst enemies. Once I have tapped into his personal fantasy realm of gory revenge, it’s “game on,” as they say in the vernacular.
At that point it really doesn’t matter to me who or what is the focus of the subject’s hate, or what group he blames for his own shortcomings or for the ills of the world. Left, right, capitalism, socialism, religion, nationalism…in truth I stopped caring very much about them long ago. When an action will advance the cause of social justice that’s great, but generalized mayhem is also a worthy end in itself. “The worse, the better,” in Lenin’s words. Create the pre-revolutionary conditions. Some days I still half believe the old dogma. But at least I’m not just another insect in the hive.
I slid my empty cup away, and awaited the return of my barista. In a minute I’d be commiserating with him, discovering that we were practically soulmates, rare men of true vision. Posing as an out-of-town business visitor, I’d ask him the best place in the area to eat. It would turn out that he and I shared similar culinary and beverage tastes, fancy that! And I’d gladly spring for lunch or dinner if he’d agree to be my local guide. Then we’d discuss further his hatred for the Jewish bankers who run the world, and the right-wing talk radio hosts who are their willing accomplices and mouthpieces. At least, in the world according to Duncan McClaren.
Right-wing talk radio was very much on my mind, because one of the icons of that loathsome industry was going to be passing through the region two weeks hence. Ben Rafferty wasn’t the king of right-wing hate radio, but he was one of the rising princes, nearly up there with the big three. Currently he was on a national book tour, promoting his latest toxic spill of racist hate-speech. Oh happy day, his entire schedule, with bookstore locations, dates and times, was available online.
I’d discovered some other useful information in an interview Rafferty had given to a pro-gun blog. The talk host traveled without an armed bodyguard, due to the vagaries of conflicting state gun laws. This was particularly a problem when flying into New York or New Jersey. It was just too damn hard to stay in compliance with a thousand local gun laws that could cause you to be imprisoned over a technical firearms violation. So instead of an armed bodyguard, he had some kind of karate guy for protection. An ex-soldier who had been wounded in one of America’s wars of imperialism. Poor Ben Rafferty, who never saw an assault rifle he didn’t want to French kiss, couldn’t have a gun during his East Coast book tour. Beautiful.
The imminent proximity of Duncan McClaren and Ben Rafferty had brought me seven hundred miles to this coffee shop. With a little stroking and massaging of Duncan’s twisted and deformed ego, I hoped to convince him that his empty life could at long last have genuine meaning. He could make a real difference! He could change the world! He could accomplish something important, and be remembered forever. I already had an untraceable pistol to provide him, if he proved receptive to my guiding hand. Oh, the mayhem potential, when one of the leading right-wing haters is finally knocked off! Mayhem-fest, indeed. Mayhem squared. Mayhem cubed!
Radio talker Ben Rafferty meant nothing to me, but he had millions of rabid right-wing followers who clung to his every screech and scream for three hours a day. After Duncan McClaren approached the book-signing table, pulled out his pistol and gave his miserable life meaning, Rafferty’s fans would rise en masse in blind rage. And a few of his most rabid fans, feeding their own dark fantasies, would predictably strike out in violent reprisal against progressive leaders. Secondary explosions, if you will. A chain reaction, possibly my greatest work ever.
Duncan returned to my end of the bar when he saw my empty cup. While he poured my refill I quietly said, “You know, you’re right about those Jewish bankers and how they control talk radio. They’re all in New York, right? I mean, most people have no idea what’s going on around them.”
His eyes widened and a half-smile formed on his lips. He set the coffee pot down and leaned on the counter until his nose was a foot from mine. One eyebrow raised in expectation above the high side of his demented grin. He glanced back down the counter to see who was in earshot and then said, “You know about the Illuminati, right?”
Did I ever.
I smiled.
This plan might actually work. I’d know better after a long conversation with Duncan McClaren in a dark restaurant. Duncan might be my masterpiece, the one to light the fuse of Civil War Two. And if he does, eventually I want the world to know who handed him the matches, the gun and Ben Rafferty’s book-signing schedule.
But for now just call me Professor Raoul X, a guiding hand of history.

Have you been looking for DIY projects to decorate your home on a budget? Well, do I have some easy projects for you to try!!

These are those wonderful clipboards upcycled. You can paint 3/4 of the board with chalkboard paint, leaving a space on the bottom to add paint or washi tape. Or you can simply wrap with contact paper.

You can dress up your table with tie-dyed Burlap.Buy enough light-colored burlap yardage from the fabrics store so it hangs 1-2 feet off the ends of your table. Cut it lengthwise so it’s several inches narrower than the width of your table. We used RIT fabric dye in fuschia to dye one-third of the runner at each end. To create a slight ombre effect, we repeated the dye bath on one-sixth of the runner on each end to darken the color. Finish the runner by fringing the edges, if desired.

You can update a $1 store vase with acrylic paint. Hold the vase in your hands and tip it in different directions so the paint rolls around inside, creating a wave of color. Leave some of the vase clear. You can make these tissue paper flowers, twist then wrap the end of the flower with some wire. Cover the wire heavily at the top, then thinly the rest with green floral tape.

Use old t-shirts to update a plain pillow. You can also use jersey fabric. Either material is perfect for this project because they don’t unravel, so you won’t have to finish the edges. Cut fabric 1 to 1-1/2 inches wide. Use your fingers to scrunch the fabric into ruffles as you stitch down the middle with a sewing machine.
See more DIY pillow projects

Prevent water rings and add a style all at the same time with DIY cork coasters. Cut 4×4-inch squares from thin cork. You can find the cork at your local craft store. Cut a simple herringbone pattern from stencil acetate. Press the stencil onto a cork square and apply acrylic paint.

Create a whimsical mobile with lace and embroidery hoops. Stretch lace fabric in wood embroidery hoops. Trim excess lace. For a clean-lined look, drill two holes on either side of the embroidery hoop fastener and screw the two pieces of the hoop together, then pry off the original hardware. Hang from white cording and position at alternating levels.

All you need to create this funky string art is string, nails, and a board. Map out your design and hammer the nails into the board (don’t pound the nails in completely). Wrap string around the nailheads for the design. If you’re spelling a word, print out the letters and cut them out. Arrange the letters on the board and hammer a nail into each corner of the letters. Wrap string around the outlines of the letters first, then fill in the letters with woven designs.

Outside I was playing with Garden Decor when I came up with these:
I love the light I made to hang in the Pergola https://kelleysdiy.com/2017/07/05/chandelier/. These Gazing Ball Stakes https://kelleysdiy.com/2017/04/08/gazing-ball-stakes-3/
Some of the best Crafts I have done, I think, are the ones I made with paint sticks. I did this wonderful post about some of the wonderful projects you can make, using paint sticks. You can find it here: https://kelleysdiy.com/2016/10/18/paint-stick-crafts/
I started by making this Rug Rag. You can see tutorial here: https://kelleysdiy.com/2017/02/01/rag-rug/ug/
Make labels from hardware store wood shims and institute order. They are so inexpensive! Cut a few shims to the desired size by either scoring with a crafts knife and snapping, or trimming with a rotary cutter. Sand each corner to round, and drill a hole in the middle of the thick end, about 1/2 inch from the edge. Use a small foam brush to paint the front and back of each tag with chalkboard paint. Let dry and write or stencil on labels with white charcoal pencil or chalk. Tie onto a bin or basket with a length of baker’s twine.

This is such a pretty idea for spring! Put your best foot forward with a unique flower vase. Arrange your flowers in a regular vase (make sure it will fit inside the boot first). Then simply tuck the vase inside the boot — the more colorful, the better!

Rescue glass jars bound for the recycling bin for this upcycled project. Clean out the jars, poke a hole in the top of the lid, and screw a cabinet knob through the hole. We paired gold knobs with gold lids, but you can also paint the lids to match your hardware. Don’t you just love the metallic gold!

This one is easy. Create shelves with panache using birch logs as supports. Trim sturdy branches to equal lengths, keeping the cuts straight. Paint two 24-inch-long 1×6 boards in the desired color. Attach one board to the bottom of the branches using wood screws, and attach the second board to the top of the branches, again, with wood screws. Hang the shelves using picture-hanging hooks driven into wall studs.

Give a plain roller shade color and punch with a painted pattern. Using a ruler and T-square. Mask off straight stripes with blue painter’s tape. Apply latex paints in your desired colors using a foam roller. Let paint set, peel off the tape, and let the paint dry completely.

Give a mod twist to a wrought-iron chandelier with a string of wooden balls. Select several different-size balls from the woodworking aisle at the crafts store. Screw small metal eye hooks into opposite ends of each ball. Link the eye hooks to chain the balls together, then drape from the chandelier. DIY Tip: Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to grasp and twist the tiny eye hooks.

Put your touch on off-the-shelf furniture by transferring any favorite image — a photograph, a bit of a painting, or even a fabric pattern — to the plain surface. Scan the image into the computer and print it on transfer paper, which you can buy online and from office supply and crafts stores (about $20 for a package of ten 8×10-inch sheets). Follow the package instructions to transfer the image. These bentwood chairs have the perfect smooth surface for such a project.

For virtually no cost at all, you can mold an attractive centerpiece. Employ the simple technique of paper-mache, which involves dipping strips of paper into a solution of equal parts white glue and water. Turn over a mixing bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Tear strips of paper: book pages, magazines, sheet music, wrapping paper, or wallpaper will work. Here, the artistic look comes from copies of blueprints placed facedown with a layer of patterned scrapbook paper laid right side up. Apply at least three layers of paper to develop a sturdy vessel; let dry. Remove plastic wrap and bowl, and, if necessary, smooth any rough edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Now, I am pretty sure all of you have seen this inexpensive idea.

Dress your windows quickly and smartly with tea towels turned into cafe curtains. Simply clip drapery rings to the top edges of the towels, and thread the rings onto a curtain rod. You’ll want the curtains to hang down to the windowsill, so mount the rod accordingly. If you have a double-hung window, position the rod so the top edge of the curtain lines up with the sash.
DIY Tip: If necessary, trim the towels to length and hem using a sewing machine — or iron on fusible webbing for a no-sew option.

Create a chic, mid century pendant fixture using just string and a balloon. Purchase a 35-inch balloon from a party goods store, or if you can find it at the Dollar Tree, and blow it up to about 30 inches. Brush it with a thick coat of fabric stiffener, which you can find at fabrics and crafts stores. Wrap the balloon with white crochet string, brushing on more stiffener as you work to ensure a thick coating. Let dry for 24 hours, then pop the balloon.
DIY Steps: Illuminate the shade using an inexpensive light kit for hanging lanterns. First, tie a knot in the cord about 7 inches from the bulb. Thread the plug end through a slit in the center of a plastic butter-tub lid. Using kitchen shears, cut a hole in the top of the globe slightly smaller in diameter than the butter-tub lid. Insert the bulb and lid in the globe. Hang the cord from a hook in the ceiling. Use a low-watt light bulb.
