Sonic X Shadow Generations

What a year to be a Sonic (Franchise) fan, earlier in 2024 we had a huge amount of announcements in the realm of music, art, movies and last but not least gaming. Sonic Team graced fans with an announcement about a remaster of one of it’s most popular titles Sonic Generation; but that wasn’t all, they also announced additional content, a side story about Shadow the Hedgehog and his whereabouts during the events of Sonic’s quest to foil Eggman’s plan to control time.

I’m going to focus primarily on the Shadow content since it’s completely new; however I will (pardon the pun) do a speed run on Sonic’s part. 

Sonic is celebrating his birthday when Dr. Eggman shows up with a time variant of his past self who have both gained control of a temporal anomaly known as the time eater. After ruining the party, separating him from his friends, and starting to warp the space-time continuum, the blue blur must team up with his younger self to save everyone and everything.

Meanwhile, Shadow while on a mission for G.U.N. gets swept up in the temporal surge, and must face echoes of his own past to return to his own timeline.

Now, I’m unapologetically a Shadow fan boy but I won’t let that dissuade my critical thinking; didn’t let it for his first solo outing and not here.

The game’s biggest flaw is the obnoxious amounts of padding! I understand that Shadow has far less content to draw from, but retreading the same zones as mini games is not my idea of fun. 

That issue aside, I was thoroughly entertained by the various gameplay features such as the use of Chaos Control to solve various in game puzzles. Shadow’s new powers were interesting, the doom wings were cool but felt tacked on because they were regulated to a handful of uses; Doom Blast was a palette swap of a later attack from Sonic Frontiers, then there were the Doom Spears which didn’t need to exist.

The 2 most interesting abilities were Doom Surf which gave Shadow the ability to ride water on a manta ray like creature, and Doom Morph which allowed him to transform into a black arms like creature to attack enemies and solve other puzzles.

The soundtrack like in most Sonic Team joints was on point.

I played it on the switch so the graphic upscale was minimal, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

So that’s the game, Sonic Team did the thing and it was fine; I liked it and it was a great entry in the “Year of Shadow.”

I give Sonic X Shadow Generations a 3 out of 5.

BREAKING NEWS: Nintendo has just wrapped up their hour-long Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, showing off the specs of the new system! Here are the system specs:

First up, we'll start with the system itself! The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to release June 5th, 2025, costing $449.99 (£395.99)! The system boasts a 1080p pixel handheld screen with support for 4k in docked mode! Additionally, the system will support an HDR screen with up to 120fps! The system will also have 256GB of storage!

Secondly, the new controllers, entitled simply 'Joy Con 2', will have a 'Mouse Mode' feature! This allows supported games to allow players to get the fluidity and control of a PC mouse! Metroid Prime 4 will support this feature!

Additionally, we've finally learned what the mysterious new C button on the right Joy Con does! The Switch 2 will support voice chat directly through the system! The C button is used for players to go back and forth between their game and the voice chat menu at a moment's notice!

Additionally, this feature also supports screen share, allowing players to see their friends' games as they play, as well as a camera accessory that can be used for face cam!

Finally, Nintendo confirmed a new and improved Pro Controller! This one adds the new C button, features two custom buttons on the back, and a headphone jack! The controller will cost $79.99 (£74.99).

I bought a dirt cheap Switch controller off of Aliexpress!

"IINE Phantom Elite Pro" was marketed at about $35 on Aliexpress, marked down from about $60, and I was impressed enough by its stated featureset I snagged one. It bills itself as having

NFC for Amiibo connectivity

Full HD Rumble support

Good gyro

A charging dock

And all of these things also turned out to be true! I couldn't give less of a damn about the RGB effects and I'm really only putting up with the clicky face buttons because of their insanely low travel; I have a pair of Mobapad M6 HD joycons that also have clicky face buttons and a clicky d-pad, but the insanely high travel on those buttons make them feel really bad to use, which is a shame because they otherwise fit the bill of what I wanted (clicky buttons aside).

The charging dock is easy to slip the controller onto and take it out of, has a rubber bottom for anti-slip, and has a surprising bit of weight to it. The controller comes with a dongle, but I don't know if it actually does anything but work as a Bluetooth receiver since it doesn't seem to enable any kind of 2.4Ghz functionality (nor would I expect it to, it didn't claim to have any). Thankfully the RGB can be turned off.

Especially for the price-point I'm very very pleased with this thing, highly recommend it for anybody that wants a PC controller with a dock and doesn't care about analog triggers or anybody looking for a full featured Switch controller for half the price. My only real complaint is that it doesn't seem to switch modes instantly (or at all, in some cases) when toggled on the back, but does appropriately change modes when turned off and on again.

ok so. I was trying to find any instance of my current switch controller existing in an official online store- cuz yknow I'm probably gonna buy another one cuz this one's had its movement joystick destroyed by being practically untouched for like 6-8 years then suddenly used to play Hades for a couple months straight-And I wanted to like Know Things about it so I can replace it with one that has a layout I'm familiar with.

And there are. Two (2) that I could find. Ones on amazon,and it says it's the 'unenhanced' version that i have, but it very clearly has buttons on the back mine doesn't, or walmart.

So there's roughly 3 options here:

logical option #1: nowhere sells it any more bc its old

Logical option #2 (moreso a follow up to #1): someone at amazon fucked up with the listings after this version was discontinued

Funny option: I have a controller from walmart somehow, despite not living in the us or having ever seen a walmart

Iron Meat

Throughout my tenure as a gaming journalist, I have had the pleasure of working with studios and developers who truly understand gaming as a medium and an art form (suck it, Roger Ebert!). And very few of them can be found in the AAA tier; thankfully, companies like Retroware still respect the consumer. And since Konami can't be bothered to make a Contra title with some actual effort, I'm thrilled to say that Retroware was willing to show them how it's done. Let's get into it.

You play as a nameless soldier sent to exterminate meat-like aliens before they can complete their invasion of Earth. Yup, it's that straightforward.

As you can tell, this is a very pretty-looking game; the visuals would absolutely be right at home on every console between the Genesis and PS1. The colors really pop with the clean-looking sprite work, and with my ADHD rat-like brain, that was enough to draw me in... what can I say, I'm simple.

Much like my dating life, it takes more than looks to make me stick around, and the gameplay is just the right amount of fun, slathered with a massive dollup of soul-crushing difficulty (not complaining, I just accept that I suck at this sub-genre!)

And there's co-op (which I haven't tried yet, because I don't like many people.) But it looks fun nonetheless.

The music fits into the concept quite well, as I see heavy implementations of sound quality that this era inspired.

And if Boss rushes are your thing, the latest and MAJOR update has this, plus other new modes and other new modes. As well as new weapons and enemies.
