Students from Northern Michigan University are completing awesome internships!
Kayleigh Hartland is completing an IT audit internship with TE Connectivity in Berwyn, Pa., this summer. She is an information assurance/cyber defense major from Kent, Wash.
“Having a well-rounded business education was a big benefit for this internship,” Kayleigh said. “Being confident and being able to put myself out there is also a quality that is highly desired, especially in auditing. I gained the confidence to do that through my education and activities on campus.”
Aside from her coursework, Kayleigh was involved in Associated Students of Northern Michigan University, the student government at NMU. She was also a member of the Association of Information Technology Professionals and currently serves as the president of the Student Cyber Security Association, which she helped to organize.
“As a student, my favorite memory has been seeing students work hard and take advantage of the opportunities they have to better themselves,” Kayleigh said. “I love being able to see people improve and learn, and be able to use it to help themselves and the community around them.”
Way to go Kayleigh!

Amir is a marketing major from La Grange, Ill. He plans to graduate in December 2017. This summer, he is interning with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Chicago.
“As a member of the Management Consulting team, I will be put on a real client project with a team of PwC professional workers to help clients translate strategy into execution,” Amir said. “Our team helps businesses improve their performance and grow by solving problems and finding new and better ways of doing things.“
As a student at NMU, Amir said his academic career and educational experiences have been fantastic. He enjoys the small class sizes and the helpful professors.
“The classes that I have taken have provided me with a strong all-around foundation, not only about the materials that we learn in the classroom but outside the classroom,” Amir said. “NMU has taught and challenged me on how to stand out from the crowd and be a bright and well-spoken individual.”
Way to go Amir!

Lindsey Eaton is an art and design major from Marquette, Mich. She earned an internship with The Jamar Company in Duluth, Minn., this summer.
“During my time so far at Jamar, I have updated  some of their internal logos and brand standards, as well as created brochures, ads and other graphics to help promote their specialty contractor and specialty (metal) fabrication services,” Lindsey said. “Due to my art and design background, I was able to gain the upper hand on the other marketing applicants.”
Lindsey said she loves the hands-on learning experience she receives at NMU.
“I feel very fulfilled by my major, since I turn in something physical to test my knowledge, rather than taking a standardized test,” Lindsey said. “Another aspect I really like about my major is the relationships I have made with my fellow art and design students and the professors.  I love that I can walk into a class at the beginning of the semester and have several familiar faces taking the class with me."
Way to go Lindsey!

Shelby Talsma is an accounting student from Skandia, Mich. This summer, she is working as a tax intern for Plante Moran in Traverse City.
At her internship, Shelby is gaining hands-on experience with both tax and audit procedures. She became familiar with the internship through an accounting job fair she attended as a member of Beta Alpha Psi at NMU. After meeting recruiters at the fair, she later applied with the company.
Shelby said she enjoys the real-world experiences she has earned through the accounting program at Northern.
“NMU was a very logical choice for me because I knew that I wanted to pursue a degree in the college of business,” Shelby said. “It was affordable and the campus was close to my home.”
In addition to her coursework, Shelby is also an active member of the Student Leader Fellowship Program, the Honors Program, the College of Business Dean’s Student Advisory Committee, Beta Gamma Sigma, WELS Campus Ministry, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistant. She also leads as treasurer for Mortar Board and serves as the President of Beta Alpha Si.
Way to go Shelby!

Students from Northern Michigan University are completing awesome internships!
Hannah Schutzkus is originally from Elgin, Ill. She is a public relations major at Northern Michigan University and will graduate in May 2018.
This summer Hannah earned an internship with the Columbus Blue Jackets - a team in the National Hockey League. As their digital and social media intern, she will assist in maximizing awareness of the team’s digital space.
“Northern has a fantastic public relations department, and the faculty here have been so supportive and helpful when it comes to pursuing my dream job of sports PR,” Hannah said. “Throughout the entire application process for this internship, PR professor Dr. Isaacson was a great help in making sure I felt confident and prepared for my application and interviews.”
Hannah originally selected NMU because she was offered the full-ride Harden Scholarship, and she was interested in a university with such an enthusiastic hockey community.
“I love how supportive both the faculty and other students in my major are; it feels like a family,” Hannah said. “The professors are great at tailoring the content covered in class to apply to what you're interested in as well as sharing internship and job opportunities they think would be great as well.”
In addition to her coursework, Hannah is the director of social media for NMU’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. She is also a producer at WNMU TV-13, the Upper Peninsula’s PBS station.
Hannah earned her experience in sports PR through her work with the NMU athletic department in the Sports Information office. She also worked for the Kraft Hockeyville USA event that came to Marquette, where she assisted the team that brought in the NHL teams to play a game at the local Lakeview Arena.
“Without a doubt, my favorite memory is the opportunity to work for Kraft Hockeyville USA,” Hannah said. “I found out about the application through PRSSA, and got to work with several other PR students as a brand ambassador during the event, which meant I got to see the Canes/Sabres game and the Stanley Cup up close! It's great how many exciting events like this happen in Marquette and that Northern students can get involved.”
Way to go Hannah!

Noah Beck is a marketing major from Harbor Springs, Mich. He plans to graduate in December 2018. In order to gain valuable work experience, Noah is interning with Kilwins Harbor Springs this summer.
His internship involves training new employees and gaining hands-on experience in helping to plan community events. He also has the opportunity to work with the marketing chief and coordinators this summer.
“Through my different marketing, management and communication classes, I developed a greater understanding of what actually happens in the workplace,” Noah said. “With this knowledge, and a strong retail background, I was able to communicate my interest in this internship through topical discussion and my previous background/knowledge gathered from NMU.”
Noah enjoys his field of study because of the experience and knowledge of the professors at NMU.
“Given the knowledgeable professors and smaller class sizes, being a marketing major gives you a great opportunity to learn about the field and get your opinion out in class,” Noah said. “The marketing classes always offer a comfortable environment where everyone is welcomed.”
Way to go Noah!

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Jodi Payne is originally from North Branch, Mich. She is a communications study major with a dance minor and plans to graduate in May 2018.
Jodi first chose to attend NMU because of its adventurous nature and strong academics. She stayed because of the faculty and staff, who she says make the university special and intimate.
In her time at NMU, Jodi said she was fortunate to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, last fall.
“While I was there, I participated in a service project with a non-profit called Ikamva Youth,” Jodi said. “I spent my semester organizing presentations, collecting student data, tutoring and hanging out/mentoring low income students. It was such an amazing intercultural experience and gave me an incredible insight into the world of communication on the other side of the globe.”
Jodi said she is most excited about joining orientation staff because she loves NMU, and she wouldn’t be the person she is today without the staff, programs, resources and location of this university. As for incoming freshmen, her piece of advice is to just ‘do you, as silly as it sounds!’
“There are so many opportunities here, student organizations, and programs,” Jodi said. “These four years are so incredibly short, I implore you to spend them doing what you want, and what makes you happy! Aim for growth and success but when failure happens, know that there is a learning curve, and that the best growth comes from the willingness to try again. Northern will change your life, if you do all that you can to be happy, and embrace the mistakes, good or bad!”

Students from Northern Michigan University are completing awesome internships!
Jenna Happach is a biology/ecology major from Winnebago, Ill. She earned a position in the Summer Research Scholars Program, working with Cornell University’s New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, N.Y.
In her research this summer, Jenna is studying fire blight in apples. Fire blight, caused by a bacteria, destroys hundreds of acres of high-value apples annually. Jenna is helping to test a method that is more ecologically favorable than antibiotics to help manage fire blight.
In part, Jenna earned this opportunity from the experience she gained working in Dr. Donna Becker’s lab in the biology department the past three semesters.
“This hands-on learning experience not only gave me laboratory and teamwork skills required for this position, it also created a close relationship with Dr. Becker, who has served as a fantastic reference and constantly encourages and supports students in her lab and courses,” Jenna said. “In addition, my SLFP mentor Eric Goff encouraged me to pursue this opportunity and to continually seek out new research opportunities.”
Jenna said she chose NMU because of the ecology program and the options the university offered for catering her education toward a botany focus with opportunities for fieldwork. In addition, she appreciated the affordability of NMU, even as an out-of-state student.
“During my college visit, I fell in love with everyone’s welcoming Yooper attitude and was drawn to the lush surrounding environment,” Jenna said. “I also never lived next to a large body of water, and wanted to experience Mother Superior.”
Way to go Jenna!

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner is a sports science major from Marquette, Mich. She plans to graduate in 2019.
“A big part of why I decided to attend NMU was the location,” Shayla said. “Marquette, Mich. is home to me. It offers numerous points of interest that include natural beauty, culinary delights and an active community. It made sense that NMU was a fitting place for me to continue my education and running career, and at an affordable price. Northern’s small class sizes were important to me and I have met some remarkable staff and faculty.“
As a sports science major, Shayla works closely with the health and human performance department. She has had the opportunity to work with expert faculty, who she said have really helped her learn a lot in a short amount of time.
“The sports science major provides the perfect mix of in-class and hands-on learning,” Shayla said. “There are many research opportunities to shadow, get involved in or conduct. I also like that the cluster minor allows me to pick classes I’m more interested in.”
In addition to orientation staff, Shayla is a member of the NMU track and field team, Student Leader Fellowship Program and Superior Edge. She is also a McNair Scholar.
This summer, as a member of orientation staff, Shayla said she is excited to become further in touch with the institution.
“I’m excited to learn more, touch the lives of others, make lifelong memories and friends, grow as an individual, and have an unforgettable experience in the next five weeks.”

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Ken Schlesser is a secondary education major with an emphasis in mathematics. He is originally from Hometown, Ill.
”I decided to come to NMU because coming from a suburb of Chicago, the closeness to nature isn’t something you get too often,” Ken said. “It is an awesome change of scenery. I fell in love with Northern the minute I stepped on campus. I felt comfortable and at home on my first visit here.”
During his time at NMU, Ken spent a summer working for a school back home, where he was able to get a better perspective of what teachers do every day. He said it was a neat opportunity to be able to shadow some of the teachers who taught him, and he enjoyed being able to see their teaching styles and listen to their advice.
"I’m excited to be an orientation staff member because I love to make connections with people,” Ken said. “Being an orientation staff member will really allow me to make connections and help incoming students figure their way around NMU.”

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Gage Deeter is a secondary education major with an emphasis in chemistry. He is originally from Escanaba, Mich., and has plans to graduate in fall 2019.
“I chose to come to NMU because of the education program,” Gage said. “What we have here is so personalized and intensive. I could not have picked a better school, and who can say ‘no’ to living in the U.P.? A 15 minute walk to Lake Superior? Yes please!”
During the winter 2017 semester, Gage had the opportunity to observe a sixth grade classroom. It was his first time in the classroom as a teaching candidate, where he was able to put the theories he learns in his classes to practice. He described the experience as completely eye opening and amazing.
“I love how all of the professors in the education department know who you are as soon as you start your education classes,” Gage said. “Being able to work in a classroom at every available opportunity is something I would not have been able to do at other schools. I feel as though my education is tailored to me and I am allowed to make my NMU experience entirely my own.”
Gage said he is most excited to join orientation staff because he wants to get incoming students excited to start their lives at NMU.
"As an orientation staff member, you are the first face some of these students see that represents NMU, and I am excited to set the tone for next year,” Gage said. “I still remember how much fun I had at orientation, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to do the same for incoming students. Plus, who wouldn’t love spending a summer in Marquette?”

Meet our summer 2017 orientation staff!
Kimberly Shuman is a social work major from Tomahawk, Wis. She decided to attend NMU after visiting campus for the Presidential Scholars competition.
“I fell in love with the friendly atmosphere of campus and the Marquette area,” Kimberly said. “When visiting, I felt comfortable on campus, which helped me adapt quickly. I knew I was in the right place.”
Kimberly said she enjoys her major because the social work professors are extremely helpful. She said they foster an open environment that allows students to feel more independent, yet connected to one another in the classroom.
“In my first social work class, we were required to do community service hours. I took this experience back home where I worked with a discount food store during the Thanksgiving season. Doing this I met and helped people from my own community that I had never seen before,” Kimberly said. “It was interesting to see the opportunities I had overlooked, and gain connections from that volunteer work which I know I can reference for future employment opportunities.”
All of her hard work has paid off, as Kimberly accepted an internship at Upper Peninsula Health Plan as a freshman. Kimberly said it has been the most rewarding experience in her college career thus far.
For all the incoming freshmen, Kimberly suggests walking in without any concrete expectations.
“College is eye opening and you will learn more in your first year than you learned in four years of high school,” Kimberly said. “Don't hold expectations of how your first year at NMU is going to go, because it's different and amazing for everyone. It's all about what you make it.”

Daniel Kase is an international studies and German studies student from Rockford, Mich. He is teaching English as a second language to students in Tainan, Taiwan this summer through the World Passport program.
“NMU has given me opportunities to learn about different areas of the world and to learn about other languages and cultures,” Daniel said. “I have had many opportunities to act as a leader and to practice cross-cultural communication and cooperation while at NMU.”
Even with his double major, Daniel said he finds his degrees to provide a lot of flexibility.
“I am able to choose classes that fit my own interests,” Daniel said. “I feel as though I am able to take my own approach to my education rather than just take a bunch of predetermined courses.”
