Loneliness is something never fit for a child, though he cannot say that he ever was truly alone, it eats away at their excitement for life. In return, it adds to the only other joy they can experience: learning. More so, learning through curiosity and exploration. Percival blames his childhood loneliness for the path he finds himself on now, for if he had never roamed through the woods and stumbled upon Gawain and Owain, if he had never followed them back to Camelot, then he would not be in the predicament he finds himself in now. Countless dragons have been slain, knights standing eight feet tall have fallen to the ground, his name is known all across the land, and yet this is the worst thing he has faced.

The gravestone sits innocuously beneath the flowering hawthorn, the pale blooms have dropped petals onto the ground, reminiscent of freshly fallen snow.

Now he, like the boots of the traveler, ruins its crisp beauty. The flowers that he has brought are more of a true white than the petals; they lack the soft pale pink, and they are also bigger. Their weight is heavy in his hands, even though they are lighter than his gauntlets. He wants to drop them where he stands and flee, maybe then he would not have to kneel at the base of that grey stone and beg for forgiveness from one who cannot respond to his cries.

There is no name is carved into it. He never quite felt confident enough in his letters to mark this final resting place; it looks so barren without a name, he feels regret well up in his chest, as if it wants to choke him with its tumultuous tides as a punishment. 

No such thing happens; he has already paid his price, earned his place back in light and holiness. That is the reason he has come, he dug the grave and placed the stone and buried the body within it, said the rites, and made it as nice as a boy not yet twenty winters old could make it. Now he departs for the Grail, the end-all be-all of knighthood, and his heart aches. He knows that he will never return to this place. No more will he find shelter in these woods and place one calloused hand on top of the gravestone, nor will he place a bouquet upon the dirt.

Never again will people know of the woman buried within the plot. Only he knows her, his dearest mother, whom he had failed so deeply; now she lies in her grave, marked only by a nameless stone and a bundle of lilies.
