'Moneyball' - One of the Best Baseball Movies Ever
WRITER’S NOTE: This movie review was written in 2012. I present it now as the latest baseball season has now begun. “Moneyball” is, for my money, the best baseball movie since “Bull Durham” as, like Ron Shelton’s 1988 classic, it takes a very unique look at this American pastime and the players who inhabit it. Whereas most baseball movies are about rising to the occasion and winning the big…

Day 12: American Idiot
Green Day
September 21, 2004
Tumblr media
Album Art by Chris Bilheimer
A Punk Rock Opera. American Idiot is a concept album inspired by the political climate in America and events such as the Presidency of George W. Bush, 9/11, and the Iraq War. The basic plot tells the story of the Jesus of Suburbia, a lower-middle class American teen who hates his home town and leaves for the city, St. Jimmy (who is an alter ego of the Jesus of Suburbia) and Whatsername.
Green Day wanted to expand their punk rock sound by adding elements of New Wave, Latin, and Polka Music. They took inspiration from the albums The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie, Tommy by the Who, and Quadrophenia by the Who. They listened to Broadway cast recordings and even contemporary music like Eminem, Kanye West, and Lincoln Park for inspiration. According to Billie Joe Armstrong they wanted to take "Classic rock and roll elements, kick out the rules, put more ambition in, and make it current."
They were originally working on an album called Cigarettes and Valentines, but the master tapes were stolen. They decided to start their next record from scratch and the masterpiece that is American Idiot was born. It won a bunch awards including a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2005.

High school students across San Francisco walked out of classrooms Wednesday to protest Israel’s bombing of Gaza and demand a cease-fire in the Israel-[Palestine] war, organizers said. The walkout came a day after a hospital in Gaza City was destroyed, killing hundreds of Palestinians and others sheltering there... High school students have called for nationwide walkouts to “protest the ongoing killing of Palestinians in Gaza by the Israeli military and to demand an immediate cease-fire,” the San Francisco-based Arab Resource & Organizing Center said in a statement. At 10:30 a.m., Yousra C., a student who declined to give her last name and is president of the Middle Eastern North African Club at Galileo High School, walked out of AP calculus to lead a protest. She was wearing a white hijab and the flag of Palestine on her cheek. She estimated that 150 or 200 students joined the protest, who she said were excused from class to take part in the protest.  They marched around the block at their Marina District school, waving flags and carrying banners. Some chanted in Arabic, “With our souls, with our blood, we will bring you back, Gaza.” “This is our first walkout, but if the civilians of Palestine continue to be bombed, we will continue to speak,” said Yousra, who described herself as Algerian and expressed frustration that the history of Palestine is not taught at her school. [...] “Students know what’s going on, and they want to protest against the genocide,” said another marcher at Galileo High, a junior named Halima L., who declined to share her last name. “This is not about the bombing of the hospital. It’s about 75 years of oppression.” The students did three or four laps around campus, accompanied by a car with its horn blaring and students hanging out of windows waving the Palestinian flag. They finished with a final chant and rally in front of the school before ending the protest by midday. At a morning news conference on the steps of City Hall organized by the Arab Resource & Organizing Center, activists made urgent calls of their own before the 10:30 a.m. walkout. San Francisco Supervisor Hillary Ronen — the only elected official to participate in the news conference — called on President Biden and other congressional leaders to do “everything in their power” to secure a cease-fire. “Every day since Oct. 7, I have been living with a pit in my stomach. I know many of you here live with that pit every day,” she said. “Collective punishment is a war crime, and what I watch Israel doing every day in Gaza is just that.” [...] In Oakland, about 30 students gathered at Lake Merritt, holding signs that read “California stands with Gaza” and “Stop killing the kids,” according to social media posts. [...] Another speaker at the City Hall event, Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, called the war a campaign of mass killing.  “This is not an open-air prison,” she said of conditions in Gaza. “It is a concentration camp.” [...] San Francisco parent Dr. Manal Elkarra, whose family is from Gaza City, listed the casualties from the blast at a Gaza hospital that Palestinian officials say has left hundreds dead. “Doctors in the Gaza strip are pleading for your help,” she said, choking back tears. Battling Israel’s blockade of water, power or help to Gaza, medical professionals are running out of body bags, have been forced to reuse surgical gloves, and store the deceased in ice cream trucks due to an overflow of corpses coming through the morgues, she said.
-- From "S.F. students walk out to protest Israel airstrikes on Gaza after Hamas attack" by Jessica Flores, Annie Vainshtein, and Sam Whiting for San Francisco Chronicle, 18 Oct 2023
The Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC) lists the participating schools as Life Academy, Oakland International, Latitude High, Fremont High, and MetWest High in Oakland; Galileo Academy, Lowell High, Balboa High, Mission High, San Francisco School of the Arts, Ida B. Wells High, Lincoln High, George Washington High, June Jordan School, and City College of San Francisco in San Francisco; Oceana High in Pacifica; and Berkeley High in Berkeley. Over 1700 students are said to have participated.

Notebook #15! The binding on this is absolutely trash, and nearly all the pages are falling out. Still, it holds ink very well. Scans of select doodles/journal entries below.
Tumblr media
A brief summary of my trip to Oakland and San Francisco for a Halloween bar crawl. It was not a very long bar crawl, but I did feel like crawling at the end of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: I'm a huge AJR fan! Every album release I start crying. Lyrics are, "I wish I was me, whoever that is / I could just be, and not give a shit / Hey I'll be whatever, makes you a fan / 'Cause I don't know who the hell I am / ONE! TWO! PANDEMONIUM!"
Right: Maplestory had a Hyper Tera Burning Event or something like that. I started playing in the middle of my first semester in grad school. No one was happy about this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: Observations from when I visited the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Arts, and some Bruce & Yoichi doodles.
Right: Me being so so so normal about treating Prime Torino as a dress-up doll. He'd look so good in long skirts. I know this in my heart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: There was a month when I really got into Sandman! Not the Netflix show, though the fanfic certainly bases all the dreamling fic off that... I thought the early comic version of Dream was hilariously pathetic and weird. Huge pity that the hair and robes don't translate to real life.
Right: Stardew Valley came out with the update, and I fell right back into my habit of marathoning SDV into the wee hours of night. That's Lark. He's an older Farmer who's surprisingly hardy for having been an IT guy for a decade and some change.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Left: The first rough draft for All for One's "Abbey" PMV. As you can probably tell, camera shots are not my strong suit, and the sequence went a little off the rails at the end.
Right: I don't know what to tell you guys. I dipped my toe in the FFXV AO3 archive and then I found The Promdyn (TYL!Prompto x Redeemed!Ardyn) fic of all time, and now they haunt me. Everyone else is posting "Bad Touch Chancellor Izunia" and I'm here contemplating Ardyn's whimpers.mp4.

Bible Conference in 1968 was strange:
The annual Spring Bible Conference is one of the outstanding features of the year at Bob Jones University. Running for eight days, the conference brings to the campus outstanding, orthodox Bible teachers, pastors and evangelists. All regular academic work is suspended for the conference which takes the place of a spring vacation.
This year's conference was considered one of the school's best. More off-campus guests were present than for any other event in the school's history.
Services were held in the 3,000-seat Rodeheaver Auditorium, and overflow crowds watched the services via closed-circuit television in the 1,000-seat Concert Center. For most of the sessions it was necessary to use a third auditorium the War Memorial Chapel, which has a seating capacity of about 700+.
Tumblr media
Guest speakers at the conference included Dr. Robert T. Ketcham, national consultant (retired), General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Chicago, Ill.; Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley, pastor of Raven hill Free Presbyterian Church, Belfast, Ireland, moderator of Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, editor of "The Revivalist," "Protestant Telegraph." Also, Dr. Charles S. Poling, pastor of the Church of All Christian Faiths, Phoenix, Ariz.; Dr. Glen Schunk of Greenville, evangelist; and Dr. H. C. Slade, pastor of Jarvis Street Baptist Church, Toronto, Canada.
Tumblr media
The next Bible Conference will be March 30-April 7, 1968. Among the speakers scheduled are Dr. G. Archer Weniger, pastor of the Foothill Boulevard Baptist Church of Oakland, Calif; Dr. Noel Smith, editor of the Baptist Bible Tribune," Springfield, Mo.; Dr. Bob Wells, pastor of the Central Baptist Church of Anaheim, Calif.; Rev. John Balyo, pastor of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and John Stormer, author of' "None Dare Call It Treason."
John Stormer was an anti-communist speaker.
And then a WBJU story:
WBJU, the student-manned carrier-current radio station, is now in its second year of operation. Located in the radio television wing of the Fine Arts Building, the fully equipped radio station is designed to be heard in the eight student dormitories.
Though staffed entirely by radio students, the station's operations are supervised by Robert Pratt, chairman of the division of speech and head of the department of radio and television, and other members of the radio-television faculty.
According to Mr. Pratt, the carrier-current station serves as a "laboratory training unit for students who have dedicated themselves to using broadcasting as a Christian ministry." He said that the station also endeavors to supplement the listening interests of the student body.
The university grants the bachelor of arts degree in radio and television and the bachelor of science degree in broadcast engineering. WBJU is in addition to the commercial stations operated by Bob Jones University -- WMUU and  WMUU-FM in Greenville and WAVO and WAVO-FM in the Atlanta, Ga., area.

Winter is here! and a New Granddaughter
Well, winter has truly arrived here in Pullman. There has been lots of snow, and some VERY cold temperatures. In fact, our weekly Institute dinner and devotional speaker event had to be canceled due to bad weather conditions. On Saturday Jan 13 we took the opportunity to drive to Lewiston/Clarkston to shop at Costco and a restaurant supply store. Here are some pictures of the countryside. You can see the difference between these pictures and the previous blog post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were able to take our slushy machine with us. It has been a hit with the students for sure. We have been trying some new flavors. So far the Strawberry Bomb is the favorite. We have it set up in the kitchen. You can see in the picture some bread makers. Every Monday morning we make bread for the students.
Tumblr media
Every Friday from 10:00-1:00 is Free Waffle Friday. We are in charge of setting everything up and making the waffle batter. A sign is put up outside and anyone is invited. Each week that we have been here there have been a few non church members from campus come in. It is a fun time to visit with the students.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have been starting to teach some classes. Mainly we have been teaching a Church History class. It is going quite well, but we are hoping to get more students enrolled. Our director Brother Salmond has asked us to be proactive in visiting other areas around here and try to encourage Young Adults to join in classes and activities. We will start working on that soon. But we are getting to know a lot of the students and YSA ward members.
We have a nice office where we can study and prepare our lessons. Here is Shirl doing some studying.
Tumblr media
On January 12 we had a great blessing come to our family. Vivian Elizabeth Irion was born to Ellen and Russell. We couldn't be more excited and grateful that everything went well. She is very loved!! We only wish we could hold her -- but the time will come.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have been enjoying working with the young missionaries here. They are very impressive. We have been able to help drive them places, sit in on a lesson, and interact with them at the Institute building. Transfers are coming up this week so they had a picture taken of them together after district meeting.
Tumblr media
On January 13 it got to -13 degrees. We found that we could put our stocking feet on the baseboard heater to help us warm up!
Tumblr media
Last Monday the YSA ward had a FHE activity making temple art by painting on canvas. Here is the one that Elizabeth did of the Oakland Temple.
Tumblr media
Today we both spoke in church. The bishop asked us to speak on the talks given by Elder Oaks and Elder Christofferson at the last General Conference. We also played a musical number with Sister George playing the piano. It went well.
Yesterday we had a Ward Temple trip to the Spokane Temple. We realized that we are super spoiled coming from a place where it is a short 10 min drive to the temple! It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Spokane from here. The roads weren't that great as our GPS took us on some back country roads and there was a little freezing rain coming down. But on the way back we figured out how to take better roads even though it is a little bit longer drive. I think we will go that route from now on. There were 10 of us that went including the Bishop and his wife. It was a great session. Afterward we all went to Panera Bread for lunch.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Some things coming up that we are looking forward to:
FHE dinner with the senior missionaries at the mission home
Subbing for two different teachers this week teaching from the Pearl of Great Price and the book of Revelation
The baptism this week of a new YSA

I'm a whore for Angel Reyes but I hate what happened to his character. Any fix it you can offer me to help me feel better?
Honestly, I haven't watched this season at all. I've been too busy, and friends who've been watching haven't led me to believe that I've missed much.
That said, I think it's obvious that the drama around the show runners and actors has hurt the overall arc of the show. It's also hurt the character development, so my head canons probably vary wildly from the canon of the show.
I think the original focus of the show, from what I’ve heard, was supposed to be Miguel versus EZ, brother against brother.  Light and dark, with the light turning darker and the dark turning lighter.  A woman between them.  Both struggling with their identities as Mexican-Americans, and what it means to be a hyphenate.  Angel was allegedly supposed to die in the first season.  Adelita’s baby daddy was supposed to be Miguel.
So my fix-it head canons hew more to the original arc of the series.
Tumblr media
Angel has always struggled with being second best to golden boy EZ.
He loves his brother, but Angel is a deep sinkhole of no self-esteem and the resultant bad decisions.
He knows he’s a disappointment to his father, and Ignacio/Felipe has never given Angel the words of love and encouragement he needed.
He only ever got that from his mother, so when she was murdered, it sort of calcified him in an arrested development.
When EZ gets out of prison and becomes a prospect, Angel is 90% thrilled to have his little brother back....
....but he’s 10% resentful, especially when EZ starts to gain respect in the club.
The Mayans was Angel’s thing, and now it’s become EZ’s thing.
When EZ ropes him into his deal with the DEA...when Angel has to kill Kevin (RIP to Compte for another great death scene), it’s too much.
I picture Angel as having a dark night of the soul after he kills his cousin.
He loves the M.C. life, but maybe Santo Padre holds too many ghosts now.
I imagine him transferring to another club, maybe more north in California.  Maybe he joins the Oakland charter.
Things move slower in the Oakland charter of the Mayans.  They are further from the chaos of the border, the chaos of the Galindo cartel.
It’s the mother charter too, so there’s a sense of history.  A sense of pride.
Oakland is a funky, arty city.  Not like Santo Padre at all.
Angel Reyes...without EZ and Felipe defining him, without the ghosts of Marisol and Kevin....he can discover who he really is.
One of his Oakland brothers had a girl who owns one of Oakland’s weird little art galleries.  He drags all the Mayans to an event when his girl has an art show.
That’s where Angel meets you.
You’re one of the featured artists.  You’re a sculptor—everything from delicate pieces carved from marble to big, nervy chunks of raw metal welded together.
You catch his eye immediately:  the rockabilly style of your clothing, the hair with a bright panel of magenta dyed into it.  The colorful tattoo peeking out from under your sleeve.
He catches your eye too.  He’s an absolute unit, tall and broad, and he has that lazy swagger as he walks around your piece, studying it.
You come over and introduce yourself.  Ask how he likes the piece.
“I don’t really understand any of this art shit,” he blurts out, and instead of being offended, you just laugh.
You take him through the show, explaining things with your artist’s eye.
You’re one of those casually touchy people, and Angel fucking melts under your tame touches on his arm, on his shoulder.
After the show?  The guys go out to a bar, and you join them.
You take him home with you, bold and assured in what you want.  You want him, and he wants you too.
Angel is—was—a complete fuck boi in Santo Padre, but he’s been changing over the past year.
It starts off casual with you, but it slides quickly into something more.
All that domestic shit Angel never cared about....he cares now.  With you.  He loves the life he’s able to build with you.
Sometimes he feels a pang for the life he left behind in Santo Padre.  He travels back, and he brings you with him:  you settled behind him on his bike, your arms around his middle.
Back in Santo Padre, you beside him, he realizes how much he’s grown.  How Santo Padre Angel was a screw-up and an overgrown boy, but how Oakland Angel is a man in the best sense of the word.  How much he’s laid his ghosts and insecurities to rest.

OAKSTOP BOUGHT A BUILDING!
Coworking and event space company Oakstop has purchased its flagship office building in downtown Oakland at 1721 Broadway in partnership with San Francisco cultural nonprofit Community Arts Stabilization Trust (@castsf). The sale closed April 11.
Oakstop began as a 4,000-square-foot tenant there in 2014 and gradually expanded to occupy the entire building in the last year, founder and CEO Trevor Parham said Tuesday. The company provides work, event and gallery space to entrepreneurs with a particular focus on communities of color.
“We’ve always viewed the space as a resource for the whole community with a specific focus on prioritizing the needs of the Black community,” said Trevor Parham, founder and CEO of Oakstop. “Black-owned real estate represents an even greater resource and catalyzes even more possibilities for creating long term social and economic impact for the whole community.”

PAUL JACKSON ‘BLACK OCTOPUS’ (1978)
Paul Jackson (born in Oakland, California in 1947) needs little introduction. Paul began playing bass at the age of nine and was considered by many of his teachers to be a musical prodigy. Jackson was known as a “Musician’s Musician” and shaped a sound that launched a new direction in contemporary music: the so-called ‘Pulse Playing’, a trademark sound of close-meshed funk grooves combined with sensational rhythms. With this innovative approach, he influenced entire generations of jazz and funk musicians to come. Paul’s compositions were sampled by big acts from the likes of Prince, TLC, Mobb Deep and NWA…just to name a few.
Paul Jackson was a founding member of the Headhunters under Herbie Hancock (THEgroup responsible for their ground-breaking fusion and jazz-funk compositions that took the world by storm in the 70’s). The solid union between Hancock and Jackson has been especially evident in the many international tours they have made together…not to mention that he participated on most of the Headhunters albums and Herbie’s solo albums.
Paul has also worked as a producer and as a studio/live musician alongside acts such as Santana, Sonny Rollins and The Pointer Sisters. He was a frequent guest performer at renowned international festivals such as the Montreux and Newport events. Jackson’s composing has not gone without recognition and was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1974, 1975 and 1976. Like other highly talented, creatively motivated engineers of music, Paul has expanded his career to other mediums such as playing on blockbuster movie soundtracks such as “Death wish” and “Dirty Harry”.
Paul Jackson also wrote five solo albums worth listening to – including the monster of an album that is known as “Black Octopus” which is considered to be a kind of lost Headhunters album.
His debut album “Black Octopus” saw the light of day in 1978 and is a total piece of art filled with abstract sticky funky grooves, floating electric piano playing, strong thumping bass lines, raw heavy drums and amazing vocal acrobatics (Jackson himself takes vocals in 3 out of 5 songs, and his soulful singing voice strikes an emotional chord that does not go unnoticed).
On “Black Octopus” you’ll also find some of the best all-star musicians from the likes of Alphonse Mouzon (Roy Ayers, Betty Davis, Azar Lawrence)…and last but not least fellow Headhunters Bennie Maupin and Herbie Hancock himself.
With “Black Octopus” Paul Jackson wrote the book on how a jazz-funk-fusion album should sound like. The fact that the album was only distributed in Japan at the time (Jackson resided in Tokyo since the late 70’s, where he passed away in 2021) continues to increase its reputation as an album that is VERY hard to find. This is a must-have gem…not only for fans of jazz, funk and rare grooves, but also for DJs and collectors around the globe.
Tidal Waves Music in collaboration with Totown Records now proudly presents the first ever official reissue outside of Japan of this fantastic Jazz-Funk masterpiece (originally released in 1978 on Eastworld/Toshiba EMI). This rare record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited 180g vinyl edition (limited to 500 copies) complete with the original artwork and obi strip. Also included is a double-sided insert containing rare pictures of the band.
Available in stores July 28, 2023. Pre-order now from www.lightintheattic.net
An exclusive variant (#300 numbered copies GOLD COLORED Vinyl) is also available from www.vinylmeplease.com
