#Oh! Saving Private Ryan

It's so hard when a story comes at it with completely different assumptions than you. The story calls what's going on with Rue love, and true love, and says that's enough to have saved Mytho. I can respect that the story is about that, and understand that, but it feels so meaningless to me. We found out what, like 2 episodes ago. that Rue even knew him when she was little. So we've had no time in invest in what he might mean to her, we're just supposed to take it on faith.

Not for the first time, I worry that this story is so caught up in the idea of its 'reveals' that it forgets that we need to be emotionally invested in what it asks us to care about, I would say 80% of the time I would prefer time to work on an idea to the surprise of it. A surprise can be done with EXTREME skill, but that's not always or even often the case.

You squinted at the list, finding the names neverending. “Jeez, this list keeps going, huh?” 

He could not help the scoff. “And you called me a Filmbro.” He set his forearms on the counter, locking his hands together. “What do you need these movies for?”

“They’re for my ex-boyfriend.” 

The term had him pausing. Of course—the ex-boyfriend. How has he heard of this man, but not know a thing about him? Shit, he did not even know your name.

“This ex of yours has an…interesting taste,” he said slowly. “What’s he like?”

“I can tell you he attends the same college as you. Well, us,” you clarified, jerking your head towards the college colours of your server’s hoodie. “Film major. Just like you, actually.” 

“Oh?” Small world. “What’s the name?”

“Kim Mingyu. Do you know him?” 

Vernon Chwe nearly shit his oversized jeans.

A hesitant nod of his head. “I have a few classes with him.”

“Oh?” Your stare was a little more intense now. “What do you think of him?”

Right. 

Another fated question—the people around him had to stop asking him such controversial questions, or else he was bound to piss someone off. You were already letting him off the hook too many times; one more judgemental comment, and he was having that Princess movie set smashed on his head.

Kim Mingyu. Fuckass Kim Mingyu. Film major—just like him. One of the most popular boys in the year—very unlike him. All the teachers love his essays, all the girls love his freakishly-perfect six-pack, which Vernon is extremely irritated (and devastatingly intimidated) by. 

What all these people failed to realise, though, was that Mingyu was the biggest piece of shit to grace the halls of his university—and the planet, if dramatics were in order. If you thought that Vernon was a filmbro, then Mingyu was Filmbrother. Filmcomrade. Filmnemesis. 

It was as if you could hear the thoughts churning in his head. “You can be honest, you know. He did dump me at the end of the day.” A smirk began to appear. “Say your worst.”

The reassurance did not help. “I mean,” he started, swiping your card, “He’s okay? I haven’t talked to him enough to have an opinion on him.” 

A half-truth—that should suffice. 

But because the fates like to shit on his head every now and then for kicks, they decided to leave you unsatisfied with his answer. “Or, you can keep lying!” 

Excellent intuition, really. “I’m not!” he exclaimed, slapping the card back on the counter. “I really don’t know much about him.”

The big man upstairs was testing him even further, when, with a determined gaze, you set your elbows atop the surface. You leaned closer, tilting your head to the side as you inspected him, and Vernon blinked back at the sheer lack of space you had created. His mouth twisted, eyes frantically darting at the features of your face, not quite taking in the entirety of your being. Your vision seemed to work perfectly, because it caught the slight flush at the tops of his cheeks, where it was just pale skin seconds before.

Your smirk deepened. “Judging by your blush, you’re either terrible at lying…or,” you offered, voice lowering a little as you drummed your fingers against the counter, “You’ve never had a hot girl this close to you.” 

Fuck everything and everyone, because that only made him blush more furiously. You could not help the chuckle that escaped, deciding to cease torturing him and take your card. “I’ll not say the answer, Mr. Filmbro, but I think you already know.”

Since he had no plans of turning into a human form of a ketchup bottle, he evaded the topic entirely, instead focusing on interrogating you. “You still haven’t told me how Mingyu is related to the movie list you made.”

That seemed to hold your interest. “Oh, of course!” Putting the list back into your bag, you began, “Well, the list holds my ex-boyfriend’s favourite films. I wanted to know your opinion on a few.”

He could not contain his sigh. Oh, he had an opinion on these films that you mentioned. Again, he would rather be buried with his thoughts on the specific genre than ever tell you. The curiosity, though, was eventually going to eat him alive.

So much for minding his business.

“I mean…” he began to think, trying to find the right words. “I don’t mind them? Godfather is a good film, but I’ve seen better from Brando. I like American Psycho, but again, people tend to miss the point of the movie.”

As you nodded, listening to his two-cents on the movies you mentioned, he paused, furrowing his brows. “Why do you care about my opinion?”

You smacked your lips together, folding the list back. “I don’t know much about you, Mr. Filmbro,” you began, “But you don’t run a filmstore without knowing a thing or two about the films you sell.”

“So?” He crossed his arms atop the counter. “Shouldn’t you have asked the guy who you made the list about?”

“Trust me,” you said, your smirk turning more into a rageful flash of teeth, “I know exactly what he thinks of these films.”

Don’t particularly know what to make of that comment. “Well, I don’t know what my opinion for these films is going to help you in any way.”

“It has helped.” You paused then, waiting to see if he would egg you on, asking how his seemingly tame opinions would play into the grand scheme of things. “All part of my master plan.”

Master plan? Vernon may have been interested before, but he was certain that, before, he could have hid it without letting you catch onto it. In a sudden flash, though, as if his mouth was beyond his control, he regrettably slipped out the words which had you smiling more than he would have liked.

“What master plan?”

He almost closed his eyes. Shit. Now I’m fucking invested.

The corners of your mouth, lifting upwards, had him almost nervous. “I was hoping you would say that.”

The Trainee Ep 3 Stray Thoughts

Last week, we learned that Jane is curt because he's the primary person trying to solve difficult scheduling issues inflicted upon them by management that can't say no to clients. Ryan considered quitting for the entire episode, but was eventually shored up by Jane praising him for finding an extra, and then not berating him for getting scammed. After solving the problems of the day, Jane pointed out that Ryan is a good supporter. I am feeling less keen on Pie for throwing Ryan under the bus.

This is a fairly reasonable nightmare to have.

Damn, and Ryan was trying to get back to it. This is the beginning of a no good very bad day.

Ep 3: The Grown Up Battlefield

Wow, our first BL moment, and it's on Jane teaching Ryan something.

Damn, Ryan, failed step one. Don't let the extras roam around.

Ryan, come on. You can't figure out how to silence or turn off your phone?

I can feel Pie building to cause problems again.

Big fan of Jane telling off that extra for disrespecting the work and Ryan.

I feel a little bad for Pie. Dealing with strong personalities in stressful situations is a skill you have to develop.

Wow, I love Jane so much. He knows who fucked up and still shielded them from the client's ire because he knows it'll change nothing.

Jane is so valid about taking licks so that others can go home.

Was not expecting a Saving Private Ryan (1998) reference in my BL today.

I like ending on Ryan listening to his sister complain. He did the same earlier when he listened to Pie.

I really love this show. I like that we're following a series of projects, and I like going from the blow up last week on setting up the shoot to the drama of completing the shoot. Looks like we'll see with post production issues next week. I continue to be impressed with the way Jane conducts himself. He recognized how inexperienced Ryan is and is slowing down a little and supporting him in his own way. I'm excited about next week.

In retrospect I cannot believe I wrote this entire post without having seen these article scans wherein Tom Hanks so perfectly explicates my whole point that it's a little breathtaking. That he so specifically frames his experience of filming Saving Private Ryan and creating Band of Brothers as a process of historical revisionism and reaction against his father's firsthand account of the war as he experienced it really brings home I think the extent to which Band of Brothers is both intensely narrativized (in opposition to lived experience) and yet equally as intensely wants to be true. Hanks is framing both Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers here as representations of a sort of surrogate truth, which is better (and perhaps somehow truer--see the PhD comment) than his father's memories, which he finds lacking.

Like--we know all this already! We watched the series! But to have the impetus behind it so directly and forthrightly laid out like that is sort of incredible. Like, oh, Mr. Hanks, is a story true? Is a story untrue? As time extends does it matter less and less? Are the stories we want to believe the ones that survive? Jesus christ.

honestly as an american i am also vexed by the tone of mota. mostly bc there is no tone? like i know that all war tv shows and movies are basically historical fanfiction but this takes it to a different level. the only way i can really describe it is "too pc". not in the "people are too sensitive these days" way but the "everything has to be so perfect that nothing means anything" way. to be fair that is a gripe that i have had with many shows and movies made in the past 10 years or so. feels bad man.

honestly, I feel this. you're right. I was talking to my lolo about it... even Band of Brothers, arguably the one that's most tainted by WW2 nostalgia-propaganda of the Bush Regime, has something to say about war. MotA... doesn't. it doesn't have anything to say that the other 3 shows of HBO War haven't already said. it's literally just a bunch of epithets about how War is Hell, War Takes, Death Does Not Discriminate, etc... without actually putting it together and making a thesis statement of it, ya know!

Band of Brothers' thesis is in the title-- From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered-- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me, Shall be my brother. It's about the brothers you gain in and you lose to war! And, with the addition of the actual veterans being part of the production, it's about the importance of stories! Of making sure people don't forget! that these things happened to these people!! and that it should never happen again!! ok! great!

Generation Kill's thesis is sewed through the tapestry of the whole show (in the best way, btw, idk why ppl don't recognize it as the best HBO War show writing-wise like... guys. c'mon.)-- War is a Hell that benefits only the few and fucks everyone else!! Oh, and the Military Industrial Complex that likes to depict and sanitize War Crimes is spit to the face of all the victims of America's Imperialism-- American war vets we mercilessly left to die on the front lines and when they come home, included!! ok! great!

The Pacific's thesis is much the same, but with an additional criticism of the WW2 nostalgia-propaganda of the Bush Regime (not just BoB, but also Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, etc etc)-- oh, we're the greatest generation, huh? Look at the shit we had to do. Look at the people we killed. This is the reality of War in any generation. This is the reality of the War that just happened. You wanted war this bad? Look at it!! You think Peace is an easy and appeasing reward? think the fuck again!!!

Hell, it's not HBO War, but M*A*S*H has the same message-- is war worth it, just as long as we can justify it? Really? How ethical, really, is the Hippocratic Oath of a Doctor when you're at War? Giving Doctor Who a New Chance, Part 1: The Star Beast

I like how in the opener the Doctor ends up running into Donna due to plain old Chronic Hero syndrome, rushing towards someone who looks like they needed help

I appreciate that we got a realtime example of Donna just missing a spaceship

her concern with stacking properly is a good establishing moment for viewers who maybe don't know her yet

It's interesting how Donna ended up giving away the money - not doing what he thought she would do

Making Donna's kid trans was a great move now that the UK is known as a rather trans-hostile place

sylvia is interesting - she seems like someone who feels guilty but is sort of going overboard with overcompensating for it rather than truly helping

badass protective - which is probably how Donna would be as a mom, some of the character development stuck despite the memory wipe, small-minded

Another Unit Scientific Advisor!

You can tell the Doctor is having a tough time with how he spills his problems to the Unit lady. Though you can also see 14 isn't quite like 10, not quite as emotionally constipated. 12 had this whole arc about spitting out the words though then chibnall didn't do anything with cause he couldn't write characters to save his life. I guess 13 was supposed to look like his (franky offensive, carricaturish) idea of a private person? At least this keeps the tendency of each incarnation being a contrast to their predecessor. Insofar as 13 had enough personality to be contrasted. Chibnalls characters are all emotionless planks of wood - and I'll better stop ranting now

i like the unit lady

It's a charming detail how Rose sells things on etsy. I betcha anything she has a tumblr

CONSISTENCY beyond just what is currently needed for the plot yes please. This should be the bare minimum but Chibnall went 8 episodes without giving Yasmin ANY defining traits or moments

I LOVE how the twist & how the Doctor deduced it from the Unit soldier not being dead. The idea that you can know someone by their method

Also love the doctor trying to outfox the Meep but getting a tad too confident there

Also like how Donna absolutely picks up that Sylvia knows the Doctor & demands the truth, but also having a moment of vulnerability

the story's a bit over the top & cliche, though. I mean I can partially forgive it because the ep is really much more about Donna, but not a fan of the over the top cliched villain. though, this RTD is the guy who made the fart episode. he was good at concepts a lot of the time, but yeah...

The wheelchair stun darts are cliche, too, but I DO like the general twist of the unit lady realizing the guards have been mind-controlled & saving the team. She seemed competent earlier. Makes me miss Osgood a bit. One hopes wheelchair lady will keep showing up in UNIT episodes.

I love Donna taking the initiative here to run off. (characters NOT being planks of wood & making self-motivated decisions! Oh im so glad we're rid of Chibnal's trash writing)

Do like the moment. Donna still having her unimportance complex, the Doctor's response that she isn't not just because he doesn't think anyone's unimportant but because she is so important to him, "why does it have to be you" Yeah David Tennant is still good at pulling ppl's heartstrings, his resigned tone when he begins reciting the 'password'

The password being similar to that time Amy had to unlock it!

Donna's first concern upon "waking up" being that she gave away the money is soo her.

Catherine Tate really shines here how she instantly retrieves the... the fast talking thing from Journey's end??

She gets so excited at getting to blow up the alien tech XD

Again praise be to Catherine cause you can tell how the hole of self-doubt that was there (though not as much pre series 4) is just FILLED with confidence.

He just doesn't give a fuck if they shoot him when he thought Donna was dead

The thing where it's less lethal now because some of the energy passed down to her kid is neat, but I don't like the idea that the personality traits of Donna's kid are attributed to the metacrisis thing. Although I suppose it could be seen as more of a nudge or inspiration

I really like the touch that the Doctor remembered the names of the alien soldiers & spoke of them to their superiors, and that he neutralized the meep non-lethally. He's an actual pacifist again with lika a worldview, not just regurgitating lines about "not liking guns" out of context

I HATE the women's intuition thing. I get that they were trying to like affirm Rose's gender as real here but I hate it. It's essentialist and I hate it. I'm gonna treat it as just a joke Donna & Rose did cause they would.

Though I DO like, & find it very appropriate that Donna & Rose themselves are the ones to think up the solution & having it sort of come from Donna's grounded, down to earthsy nature. As a counterpoint to how the Doctor kind of over-ruled Donna's will to sort of unilaterally save her against her will & taking the burden onto himself. (Not that one can blame him too much for what he did while panicking, trying to save his besties' life. )

I love the Doctor fanboying over the new "desktop theme" & praising the TARDIS for the design choices

Such a nice touch that both the Doctor & the TARDIS remember Donna's coffee preferences. It's all about the little things.

David still got it with the "it killed me" line

I do notice that his delivery, while similar, in some aspects, is still markedly different. 14 is more emotionally honest than 10, but also less hyper, he carries himself a bit 'heavier'.

Like I feel some of that subtle distinction in nuance comes down to that when the Dr. turned into 10 it was "for" Rose (so the charme & energy etc were dialed to max), but 14 is "for" Donna, in a way, though he didn't know it at the start.

AAAAnd Donna immediately returns to being a supplier of grounding common-sense advice. Cause she is right about the big goodbye thing

that's a lot of pyrotechnics for just one coffee. Donna must've spilled it into the worst possible spot. That would be the sort of luck they'd have.

Soo. it was an episode without Chibnal's terrible, flavorless writing. I liked some of the story beats though not over the top wowed but I feel like this is the first act of a longer play & the emotional penny is probably still to drop.

this is a jeyna ww2 oneshot, but there are some warnings!

this is inspired by hacksaw ridge, saving private ryan, and all quiet on the western front. this will be graphic. read carefully.

His ears keep ringing. Everything looks hazy.

Someone shakes him. “Grace!”

Slowly, he turns his head. It’s Jackson. “Grace, we gotta move!”

 Jason nods, his body shaking. “What was that?”

“Grenade.” Valdez wipes stray blood off his face. It doesn’t look like it’s his. “Practically right next to you. Fletcher took the hit, we're down a medic now.”

He looks over and he wishes he hadn’t.

Fletcher is a few feet away, one of his arms further. His head is nearly completely off his shoulders, only staying on by the few muscles that aren’t spread around him.

Jason vomits on his body.

“Damn, Grace, what’d that boy do to you?” Valdez chuckles.

“Valdez,” Zhang chides. 

“What? He just vomited on his body!”

“Hey, listen up!” Jackson shouts. Every man on the sand turns to him, regardless of rank. “We have to move or we’re dead!”

“We’re already dead, sir!” Stoll 2 calls.

“Not on my watch. On my signal, we move to that rock formation, you hear me? Grab any spare rifles and as much ammo as you can get! Grab everything you think you need from a nearby body!”

Jason scrambles to move, grabbing spare bandages from Fletcher’s body, morphine too. Checking his ammunition level, he curses. He spins around and spots three magazines. Jason snatches them and stuff them in his vest. 

“Someone get Fletcher’s dog tags,” he orders. 

“On my signal!” Jackson repeats. 

Everything is quiet, except for the sounds of gunfire, men falling on the ground, and screams. Awful, awful screams. 

“Now!” he shrieks. 

Jason jumps up, running as fast as he can. Valdez sprints in front of him, his bags jumping wildly on his back, tip of his gun brushing the ground. “Valdez, pick up the-”

Pain shoots through Jason’s left leg and he collapses to the sand with a broken gasp. Blood trickles down his leg, sinking into his socks. He stares at the wound, the way the blood is pouring out of it, the small glimpses of muscle. He pats the back of his leg, hissing at the contact. 

No exit wound. Fuck.

Jason grits his teeth and stands up, limping to the rock formation. He drops to the ground and throws his head back, the pain making his face contort.

“Medic!” Zhang yells. “Medic!”

Someone rushes over and kneels next to Jason. He tightens the strap over Jason’s thigh, stopping the blood flow. 

“No exit,” he pants. 

“Shit,” Solace mutters. “Hey, I’m gonna give you some morphine, sulfa and a bandage. That’s all I can do.”

“Do it, come on.”

Solace takes out a small bottle of morphine, yanking the cap off. He jabs in Jason’s thigh, holding it there for a second before letting up. He rips open a bag of sulfa, pouring it on the bullet wound. He pulls some bandages from his bag and wraps them around Jason’s leg, the blood already seeping through. 

“Jackson,” Solace snaps. 

Jackson looks over. “Fuck, Grace. Will?”

“Shot in the leg, no exit. Bullet still in there, you gotta help him move until the battle dies down for a bit so I can help him.”

Jackson nods and pats Jason’s shoulder. “You and me, buddy, come on, we’re making it over the ridge.”

“Yeah, I got too. My fiancée is waiting for me.”

“Oh yeah?” Valdez says. “What’s she like?”

Reyna is… “Everything. She’s everything.”

“We’ll get you home to her,” Zhang promises. “You’ll marry her.”

Jason chuckles. “I better, or she’ll kill me herself.”

The boys laugh and Solace leaves to tend to the person whose intestines are hanging out.

“Alright, boys, over the ridge and we hold that damn thing with everything we got,” Jackson says. 

Jackson puts his arm over Jason’s shoulders and heaves him up with a grunt. “We got it, Grace, you’ll see her again.”

They stumble into what might as well be no-man’s-land, tripping over torn off limbs and forgotten guns. 

Bullets spray around them and Jason whimpers when one catches his shoulder. 

“Damn it, Grace, come on!” Jackson pulls him along harder. 

Another bullet finds its way to Jason’s heart, making him slip from Jackson’s hold. 

“Fuck,” he wheezes. “Jackson, you gotta- give the tags to her, to Reyna.”

“I will,” Jackson promises. “I’ll do it.”

“Tell her I’ll see her in that dress.”

“I will.”

Jason hits Jackson’s chest. “Find her, promise.”

“I do.”

Jason’s hand falls onto the ground as he stares in Jackson’s green eyes. He sees Reyna in the reflection. smiling at him from the altar.

It’s the last thing he does.
