We need to talk about Crocodile and Mihawk’s relationship, and how notably odd it is.

Considering both of them are very smart men, they must know beforehand the moment their names appear together in the same organization, they are essentially declaring to the World Government that they are creating another emperor crew.

Now here’s the strange part.

Crocodile—being extremely intelligent—must know that in an ideal universe where Buggy did not fuck shit up and that Crocodile and Mihawk are rightfully recognized as the true leaders of Cross Guild, World Government would look at these two names side-by-side and come to the conclusion that Mihawk should be named the emperor, seen as there is a significant gap between their issued bounties. That can only mean when Crocodile made that phone call, he already had the intention of making Mihawk the king, right? Another evidence is that Crocodile even named their organization Cross Guild, after Mihawk and his cross motif.

On the other hand, Mihawk does not want to be an emperor. Mihawk makes this very clear and his opinion on this matter has never changed. That can only mean when Mihawk accepted Crocodile’s offer, he already had the intention of becoming Crocodile’s right-hand commander, right? True to this assumption, it is mostly Crocodile making the decisions in the few panels we see of their interaction with Mihawk following his lead, from recruiting Buggy and co, to how Buggy’s friends all stating that they will follow Crocodile (not Mihawk).

Buggy lucking himself into his current position does not change the fact that before Buggy was even in the picture, Crocodile and Mihawk—both of whom exude extreme I-am-king-and-serve-no-one vibes—considered each other and simultaneously decided that they want the other man to lead.

So why?

These two must have history.

Re: Sanji is acting Weird

So, we've been discussing Sanji's attitude and language lately, with him calling Zoro a burden and seemingly looking down on Vegapunk, but there was a moment at the very beginning of egghead that annoyed me, and that is the post-Wano bounty reactions.

In chapter 1058 new bounties dropped, and Sanji has the fourth highest bounty, being upset that Jinbei had a higher bounty than him, and Zoro teased Sanji by calling him number 4.

But...Sanji has never been higher than Jinbei, and he only had the third highest bounty of the crew for like a month in world time, from the end of Whole Cake to the end of Wano. Robin has almost always been the third highest.

A month had passed, and Crocodile and Mihawk kept true to their word. Outside of insults and cold remarks, they left their "leader" unscathed.

And it was driving Buggy absolutely bonkers.

He was so certain that they were planning something, that they were plotting his assassination.

It admittedly wasn't outside the realm of possibility, but you found it unlikely. While they were certainly more powerful, Buggy had more clout, and his followers were in the hundreds if not thousands. Killing him now would only result in a riot that would no doubt set whatever plans they had back considerably.

This combined with your leverage over the two made you certain that your paranoid boyfriend had nothing to fear.

Buggy was, unfortunately, not convinced.

Currently, he was pacing up and down your shared tent. His feet were disconnected from his body and they frantically shuffled after him as he floated in mid-air.

"I'm dead! I'm done for! They're planning something I just know it!"

"Buggy."

"Did you see the way that guy was looking at me?! He's working for them, I know he is! They somehow got one of my crew to spy on me!"

"Buggy."

"Gasp! What if they're spying on us right now?! They could've planted bugs all over this tent! Quick, help me look!"

"Red nose."

"WHAT DID YOU JUST SA-"

You grabbed Buggy by the nose and pulled him towards you, so he was looking you in the eye.

"You finished?"

"Uh-huh." came his nasally reply.

You let go of his nose and cupped his cheeks. "Buggy. Mihawk and Crocodile aren't trying to kill you."

"But how do you know that?!"

You smirked. "Trust me. They wouldn't dare. Not if they know what's good for them."

Buggy blinked in confusion.

You placed your hands on your hips. "Let's just say that those two underestimated just how loyal one your followers could be, and they were given an offer they couldn't refuse."

"R-really?"

"Really."

Buggy stared for a couple of minutes, then burst out into laughter.

"Gyahahahahaha! Serves you right, ya bastards! That's what you get for messing with the great and powerful Buggy-sama!"

He suddenly stopped, his eyes darting back and forth. "But uh, don't tell them I said that, ok?"

"Mum's the word, dear heart."

Buggy let out a great sigh, then plopped on the bed next to you. "Ya know, I really owe that guy a huge one. I outta pay'im back somehow. A feast? A bigger cut of treasure? Whatta you think?"

Your smirk turned into a sly grin. "Oh, I can think of one thing they'd appreciate."

"Yeah? What iMMMPH!"

Buggy's question was smothered by the sudden kiss. You wrapped your arms around his neck, and you both fell backwards onto the bed.

And so, Cross Guild was flourishing.

Mihawk and Crocodile still ran things for the most part, but publicly, they kowtowed to Buggy. Well, as much as their pride would allow at any rate.

Buggy, for his part, was content to let them do as they pleased so long as they kept up appearances and didn't try to hurt him. Which you thought was wise - provoking them unnecessarily might cause them to throw caution to the wind and lash out.

Interestingly, Buggy's crew had begun sucking up to him again. They obviously saw a shift in dynamics between the three company heads and were trying to get back in his good graces.

You knew deep down that Buggy would forgive them...after he watched them squirm for a little bit first.

You, on the other hand, made it abundantly clear that they were all on very thin ice, Galdino especially. You told him, in no uncertain terms, that if he ever pulled a stunt like that again, he would be serving Crocodile, all right...as lunchmeat for his bananawani.

Overall, though, things were going well. Buggy had decided to pull you out of the field and keep you close to base. You suspected it was to keep Mihawk and Crocodile in line, though he claimed otherwise.

You didn't mind; this just meant you had more time to spend with your boyfriend. It had been a while since your last date, and you were looking forward to it.

You would occasionally cross paths with Buggy's "partners". They would glare at you with deadly intent, and you would sweetly smile back, knowing that you had their balls in a vice and there wasn't a damn thing they could do about it.

Honestly, they had no one to blame but themselves. After all, it was only natural for a pirate to try and protect their most precious treasure.

I can’t believe Buggy was literally half a step away from calling Crocodile “Baby girl” in canon. I cannot believe the words “Croccy Baby ❤” came out of his mouth when Crocodile came to collect on his debts. My god.

Rewatched marineford war due to recent bounty reveals, and my appreciation for what Crocodile did back then comes back stronger than ever.

To put in perspective with onigashima war as example: Imagine someone showing up mid-raid to take shots at Luffy in front of his crew and alliance (leader of the “good” faction), take shots at Big Mom (yonko-tier combatant allied to “bad” faction), take shots at Kaido in front of the entire beast pirates (leader of the “bad” faction)... and then get away with only very minor injuries.

Crocodile absolutely worth 1.965 billion.

like, look at mihawk at marineford. he comes across as very reluctant to work with the marines (this is his first time responding to a navy summons in a while, iirc), but he's accepted that this is the price he has to pay for his peaceful life. that peace and quiet is all he's upset about losing when the warlord system is dissolved.

the epithet of "marine hunter," which crocodile brought up in his join my new company call, was the first piece of new information about mihawk we'd gotten in a long time, and i did find it interesting… both in contrast with zoro's "pirate hunter" epithet, which uses the same word (狩り, gari) for 'hunter,' and on its own merits. you have to imagine the marines were pretty desperate, to offer a warlordship to someone infamous for killing their men—and mihawk must have been tired of doing all that killing, or at least tired of the infamy that came with it, to accept.

and the "hiding in buggy's shadow" thing is literally text. like, that's why mihawk tells crocodile they shouldn't just kill buggy outright in chapter 1058.

Ahhh, their bounties.

Everyone, barring Chopper, is over 300 million berries, 4 of them are around a billion berries, Luffy's at 3 billion.

Like, this feels right for an Emperor's crew. It really feels like we've made it.

I still assume we'll get one more bounty increase by the end of the story, possibly two, but it really feels just so impactful.

Also, love Robin cheering Chopper up over his low bounty.

The crew sailing ahead after leaving the prior two islands traveled to. I like the narrations and the unrolled paper text boxes in chapter 1124.

They remind me a bit of some of the text boxes of Oden's narrations, during Wano's big flashback, though these are a bit different.

Nice connection to chapter 1056 as well, where the routes are selected.
