huuUOOoLRgGghh fiinnne I can't stay away from you all
i bring more autobot!swindle. plus my attempt at writing his backstory
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
disclaimer : most of the stuff below isn't canon i just wrote this for fun. if u guys wanna make ur own swindle backstories i invite yall to do so :D we will make our own swindle content
swindle came online during cybertron's early years of the age of expansion. the autobots (with their goal to expand cybertron's empire) engineered a set of bots who would serve cybertron as its intergalactic merchants, programmed to be ambitious bots who sought profit. they also came with bigger processors (for storing transactions and whatnot) and versatile frames (so they could withstand organic climates)
shortly after coming online, swindle was assigned a teacher (another merchant) who'd pass down the knowledge of the trade. swindle did his best to keep up with his lessons
as a student, swindle was determined and clever. as a bot, though...eughh...
- he had less of a filter, and didn't know how to keep a poker face
- his little new England accent used to be a lot thicker (think earthspark swindle)
- very friendly, had a lot of amicas back in the day (he was definitely the "I know a bot" guy). it was a struggle for him to keep quiet
- loved hands on activities, hated sitting still
- kept a journal detailing his intergalactic trips. tried to doodle any organics he found interesting
- LOVED shiny stuff. he was like a crow lmao
- his sharp glossa would sometimes get his aft beat
- despite being a chatterbox, he wasn't as suave back then. he'd often get himself in awkward situations, which he'd try to talk himself out of the embarrassment but he'd end up digging a deeper hole for himself
- petty king. also kinda nosy and had a thing for gossip
- loved pranking, and teased the bots he liked
once he was ready, swindle was given a ship and assigned a trading post (as a starting point). from that point, swindle was a rootin tootin merchant and nothing bad ever happened to him again :D...
...
until the quintessa skirmishes
the age of expansion ended with border disputes between cybertron and quintessa. multiple skirmishes sproutted along the border, and while swindle didn't fight in them, he was certainly caught in the crossfire. swindle ended up with a broken ship, a looted inventory, and a bungled up frame. he had to return to cybertron for repairs
back on cybertron, swindle finds a planet wildly different from the one he knows. tensions between autobots and decepticons are rising, and the banks aren't holding up that great. swindle finds himself in a tight spot (financially speaking) since he still has to deal with his losses from quintessa. unable to go back to his actual merchant job, swindle resorts to taking odd jobs to keep himself afloat (yes, even stealing)
when the war breaks out, swindle gets drafted into the front lines (a decision that still baffles him to this day). since he's not much of a fighter, the autobots have swindle work as a spy, ordering him to smuggle weapons out of decepticon servos...
in future hindsight, that was a poor decision
---
wrapping it up here because i don't want this post to get too long LMAO but I still have more ideas for him if yall are interested. just know that this is not the end of swindle lore
ALSO I finally came up with autobot!swindle designations :D I've narrowed it down to 3 and I need help deciding. it's either between
quickdime - cuz. you know. he's always looking to make a quick buck
treasury - his subspace acts like a treasury if you kinda think about it
fortune - idk it sounds cute. besides fortune tends to "favor the bold and clever"
if u made it this far then congrats. thank u for listening to me yap. have a bonus doodle

games without sheets (like no need to write anything down)
THEME: Games Without Character Sheets.
Hello there, I’ve got a bit of a range here for games. Some are solo, some are lighthearted, and some are good for contemplative conversations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh Maker, by Kienna Shaw.
You are an android, an artificial intelligence. Made, not born. Your Creator, your programming, and the world you occupy will vary, as will the scenes you play. But the question remains the same. To find its answer is the game…
Oh Maker is a Descended From the Queen card-based game of communal story-telling, designed by Kienna Shaw (@KiennaS) and Jason Cutrone (@JustJasonPls).
In it, 3 or more players take on the role of androids who, through their own unique experiences and exploits, will come to confront their very nature. Select from 10 distinct Creators, those who gave the group form and function, and their respective worlds - or generate your very own - and utilize the various prompts provided to collectively explore the question of consciousness, and maybe even find some answers.
For The Queen is a card game that introduced a new way of playing story games, and has plenty of hacks that use the same style of answering prompts to tell different kinds of stories. Many of these games expect you to start as characters with very clear goals or beliefs, but as you move through the prompts, your characters may experience doubts, or a change of heart. As a result, the end of the game is often something you cannot predict. The bulk of the experience involves pulling cards from a deck and answering the questions involved, although if you play online the game might come with alternative options. If you like the idea of this gameplay but you want to see what is out there besides a game about androids, you might want to check the Games section of the For The Queen website.
Games To Play While Falling Asleep, by Meguey Baker.
As an adult, falling asleep is hard sometimes. Our worries are the same, but wider in reach. And if we have a sleeping partner, letting them sleep if they can is a gift of loving kindness. So, sometimes, I play these games to fall asleep.
You can’t write anything down if you’re trying to sleep, so games that are meant to take place where you don’t have access to pen or paper are a possible good fit for you. I know there are some other solo games out there on Itch, but this is the one that first came to mind, and it looks like it’s a collection, so if one game doesn’t fit your fancy, another one might!
A Long Night in the Mech Bay, by Nested Games.
A 2 Player Tabletop Roleplaying Game about Relationships Reforged in Conflict
In an ever shifting war that has spread to the entire Merseus System, the Roran Federation's Ace Pilot has barely escaped from their life from a recent incident. Sadly, there is no time to rest for the pilot or their mechanic. This Mech needs to be ready to fight tomorrow and no one else is available to help. It’s going to be a long night.
I think that you could play this game without writing anything down, as long as you are able to remember the 4 truths established at the beginning of the game; truths that define your characters and their relationship to each-other. The game leads you through three mini-games; two Reveries and one Testing the Waters.
You play with a number of some kind of token, whether that be poker chips or coins or buttons. Each Reverie consists of a number of questions the characters will ask each-other, causing emotional wounds or repairing broken pieces of the relationship. Testing the Waters involves narrating how the last interaction between the Mechanic and the Pilot plays out. I think this game could end in a positive or negative light, depending on how you decide to answer each-other’s questions. If you want a game that navigates the intimacy of a relationship where a life hangs in the balance, this might be your game.
Bad Moon, by Adira Slattery.
THE MOON IS BIG THE MOON GLOWS YOU ARE BELOW SHE IS UP HIGH THE MOON HAS RISEN IN THE SKY AND THE MOON HAS PISSED YOU OFF TIME TO STOP LETTING HER GET AWAY WITH IT
In this game, you will yell at the Moon because you love her and you have no other options left. She must understand how she has hurt you. You will be heard. The Moon must hear you. She must…
This is a two-player game of catharsis, with one player listening, and the other venting their feelings. The supplicant should read through the introduction of the game and create a problem that The Moon is responsible for. They are expected to work though the problem in it’s entirety - how it started, why the Moon is involved, and why you love her so much and how that love has made the problem worse. At the very end of the game, the Moon will respond - and her response will end the game.
Clown Helsing, by Planarian.
Clowns. We've all seen them… riding their unicycles, blowing up balloons at parties, piling in garish hordes from tiny cars, waddling around in bulbous red shoes, passed out in a dumpster stinking of booze and regret. For what do these martyrs of mirth sacrifice themselves? The answer is they do it for us. Not just to fill our need for laughter and merriment, but because they defy the doom of mankind! Clowns are man's only salvation against… Vampires.
Clown Helsing is incredibly simple, although I should clarify that it is a game where only the players don’t need to write anything down. The GM might have to make a few notes about the vampires that the group is facing off against, although these should mostly be jot notes, not anything extensive. Players simply have to remember three things about their clown: the clown’s name, their clown’s style, and their clown’s niche party trick. All of your encounters take place using rounds of rock-paper-scissors, which lends to a fast-paced, goofy kind of game.

A/N: This was supposed to be one scene, but then I thought it could use a little background. Then I thought it needed some more fleshing out. Then I was like fuck it, it’s Mendo, let’s add sex. So now this is in four parts.
WARNINGS: A bit suggestive. Technically workplace sexual harassment.
780 words under cut
It was the end of your probationary period as a junior marketing analyst at Innovative Online Industries. You had arrived to the boardroom several minutes early, arranging your laptop, notebook, and pen in front of you on the table. Though you felt the slight swirl of butterflies in your stomach, you were actually looking forward to your performance review. Fresh out of business school, you felt you had been doing well so far and were eager for your supervisor’s feedback. At two minutes past the hour, however, when your supervisor still hadn’t arrived, you started to feel anxious. Opening your computer, you double checked the email invite, hoping you hadn’t misread the time or location. You had thought it odd that you were supposed to meet in the boardroom…
At that moment, the door opened and Nolan Sorrento, CEO of IOI, stepped into the room.
“Mr. Sorrento!” you exclaimed jumping up, “I’m so sorry sir, I thought I was supposed to have a meeting—“ you began.
He glanced up at you from the folder he was perusing. “Yes, sit, please.” He gestured for you to sit back down as he took his place at the head of the table.
Still standing, you tried to explain. “No, sir, I’m just supposed to have my performance evaluation—“
He smiled at you. “Yes, that’s why I’m here.”
There was a moment of stunned silence. You sat back down.
“Mr. Sorrento—“ you began.
“Nolan,” he interrupted waving a hand, still smiling. “Please, call me Nolan.”
“Alright,” you said slowly, choosing your words carefully. “Nolan, it’s not that I’m not flattered for the opportunity to meet with you, but I’m just…not sure this would be a productive use of your time…maybe someone who knows my work…?” your voice trailed off awkwardly.
“Oh, but I do. I’m very familiar with it, actually. I make it a point to stay informed of top employees at all levels. And you…well, you have captured my attention.” He looked across the table at you with his piercing blue eyes.
For reasons that had nothing to do with your career, the feeling of butterflies in your stomach intensified. “Oh?” you said softly.
“Oh yes,” he agreed emphatically. He tapped the folder. “We’ve already implemented your first marketing program. Proceeds exceeded your target projections by several hundred thousand. I’m always interested when someone can make me money.” He frowned slightly. “Didn’t you know?”
You tried to suppress your smile. “No, sir—Nolan—I wasn’t made aware. I’m glad to hear it, though.”
“And I’ll be glad to hear your next idea,” said Nolan tilting his head toward the presentation screen.
Your eyebrows shot up. “Right now?” you asked, trying to keep the panic out of your voice. Of course you had several ideas, but no finished pitches.
“Impress me,” said Nolan, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms.
“Zero pressure for this ‘performance review’,” you scoffed internally. Opening your laptop, you scanned your files. Thinking quickly, you brought up a project. It was far from complete, but you had a hunch the high projected revenue and short turn around time was the most likely to impress Nolan.
You brought your presentation up on the screen Nolan remained in his chair, impassively listening as you explained.
“Damn his poker face,” you thought. At that moment, he casually made his way to the screen hands in his pockets. You kept talking.
He leaned across you so that you were between him and the screen. You faltered. He tapped a point on your graph. “But what about this variable?” he asked softly, looking down at you.
His eyes were so blue. Every coherent thought slipped from your mind. “Um…” You struggled to focus on what he had just asked you, but you had completely lost your train of thought.
“Do I make you nervous?” he asked with a slight smile.
You shook your head. “No. I just…distracted.” He cocked his head and raised an eyebrow as through he knew exactly what had caught your attention. You felt heat rising in your face and quickly glanced back to see what he was pointing to, hoping he hadn’t noticed.
But of course he would have. Sorrento knew exactly what he was doing. You turned back to him, eyes narrowed slightly. “But, yes, I suppose there is some small element of nervousness when you’re brand new at a company and the CEO pops in unannounced to your performance evaluation and requests an impromptu presentation on a pitch you haven’t finished,” you said with a defiant smirk, hoping he would appreciate the sarcasm.
Indeed, Nolan laughed. “Touché. Well, please, finish. Don’t let me…distract you.”
Part 2 here!

Happy birthday, Refaat.
A letter
Dear Refaat,
I wrote a letter for your birthday. It’s a cliché, I know, but I had to, considering you spent years terrorizing us into becoming better writers!
I think back to when we first crossed paths in 2014, right after that 51-day Israeli military assault. The air in Gaza was thick with smoke, grief, and rubble, and Gaza felt like it was still bleeding. Everyone was picking up the pieces of what was left of their homes and lives, yours included. Israel had killed your brother, and your family home had been reduced to dust and memories from the past. Yet somehow, you stood tall, the daring man from Shijaiyah you were, like a resilient age-old olive tree that refuses to bow to the storm.
A year later, I joined "We Are Not Numbers," a space you helped create for young writers in Gaza to tell their stories to the world. I was full of self-doubt; writing had always been my refuge, but in Arabic. English felt like a mountain I wasn’t sure I could climb. I doubted my ability to pour my heart out in English, to capture the same depth, the same sincerity. You were our creative writing mentor, and let’s be honest, you were terrifying at first. Not because you were unkind, but because you could see right through us. There was no room for mediocrity around you. You’d look at a piece of writing, smirk, and say, “You can do better,” and we’d all collectively feel like we were back in kindergarten, trying to color within the lines. But that’s where your magic lay. You pushed us so hard that we had no choice but to grow. And suddenly, the mountain I feared didn’t seem so steep.
Harsh but kind. Patient but merciless. You didn’t give out compliments freely, and when you did, it felt like scoring a banger in a World Cup final. I remember those early days when I’d turn in a piece of writing, hoping it was good enough, and you’d read it with that poker face of yours. I’d sit there sweating, waiting for the verdict, and you’d say something like, “Well, this is a start,” which meant, “Back to the drawing board.” But deep down, we all knew that’s what made you brilliant. You never let us settle. Always dropping knowledge and resources like breadcrumbs, you forced us to dig deeper, to think harder, to write with more heart. You turned every assignment into a long but exhilarating battle between us and our own potential. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
A year later, you taught me Romantic Literature in my senior year at the Islamic University of Gaza. For the final project, you gave us the option to write a short story or an article. I went for the article, thinking I was being smart, sidestepping all the creative fluff. I was so proud of that piece until you handed it back with a “B+”. When my inner nerd was about to fight you on the grade, you said it was one of the best pieces you’d read written by a student of yours. I spent the next several years waving that compliment around like a trophy, as if it overnight made me a literary genius. I’m pretty sure I drove my friends crazy bragging about it. Even after I graduated, even when we had moved from being teacher and student to friends, you’d remind me of that piece. You’d bring it up, laughing, just to remind me that you still kept it because it was one of your favorites. I didn’t need an A+.
Then in 2018, when you asked me to be your teaching assistant for that program training Gaza’s youth to help them seek online self-employment jobs, I was honored and slightly terrified. We were teaching them everything from basic English communication skills to translation theory, and you were the same relentless caring mentor, following up with trainees even after the program ended, checking their progress, reviewing their work like a proud father.
That time gave me a whole new perspective. I wasn’t just the student sitting in the seats before you anymore. I had moved to the assistant standing right beside you, catching a glimpse of your two worlds. In one, you were under the spotlight, practicing your signature tough love as a mentor and showering your students with knowledge and wisdom. In the other, behind the scenes, I saw you carefully and painstakingly preparing teaching materials and doing research. You’d even come to me seeking advice. Me? You said I was closer in age to the students, so surely I had some insights that could help you connect better with them. It was your subtle way of empowering me, nudging me toward confidence, and preparing me for the day I’d stand on my own feet in front of my own class. And when that day came the following year, there I was, leading my own sessions, using the materials you had spent years refining, which you handed over to me with ultimate generosity. It was as if you were saying, "I’ve cleared the path a little, and now it’s your turn." And it made all the difference. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
We could spend hours dissecting every football match, exchanging memes and jokes, and diving into the absurdity of imagining how Shakespeare himself might have poetically narrated that jaw-dropping Messi goal or that flawless perfectly timed assist. But it wasn’t just football. We bonded over everything: shows, movies, books. You were a magnet for creativity, drawn to it wherever it lived. You had this infectious love for memes. You didn’t just enjoy them; you liked being the subject of them. You'd proudly send me a meme or a WhatsApp sticker and type with childlike excitement, "Look what a student sent me today!" It was like you were collecting little tokens of joy from everyone around you, and they kept coming because you gave so much of it yourself.
Even in our final conversation, just a week before you were killed, you sent me a meme you'd made about your car, abandoned somewhere in Gaza City, stranded between Israeli tanks and the Palestinian resistance. You were forced to leave it behind, yet you found a way to laugh about it. That was just who you were: a lighthearted soul even amid war. You joked, even as you were running from one shelter to another, trying to find a place safe enough for your family and children. You had lost more than 10 kilos from the lack of food, but somehow, you hadn’t lost your spirit.
And even in those darkest moments, when survival was the only thing that should’ve mattered, you still checked on me. I wasn’t even in Gaza, yet you asked if I needed anything. You asked about my family, who had fled to the south, offering to help with money, food, water… whatever they needed. In the middle of your own chaos, your instinct was still to care for others. Even as war tried to strip everything from you, it couldn’t take your heart.
Refaat,
I can picture you in heaven, just as I saw you in life. If I were to draw a cartoon of this picture, it would be of a tall, thin man in constant motion, a pen always tucked into your chest pocket like a loyal companion, your fingers typing away on your phone, capturing bits of a story or idea that just popped into your mind. Above your head, I’d sketch dozens of glowing lamps, floating like a cloud, never running out of light, just like you never ran out of ideas. These lamps would illuminate your path and extend their light to every corner you passed, giving others who follow the chance to walk with fewer stumbles, fewer bumps, because you’d been there first.
Dear Refaat,
When hope abandons me, when despair grips my heart and I question the purpose of all this endless suffering, your memory saves me. The weight of living in a world that has taken so much from us, sometimes feels unbearable. But then I think of you, how you lived, how you fought, and how you were taken from us too soon. I think of you and all those I’ve lost because of the Israeli occupation in these nearly 30 years of my life. I think of the way you fought for us, for our right to exist in a world that seems to offer only cruelty in return. I refuse to accept that your sacrifice, your life, was in vain. You, and all the others, cannot simply be gone without purpose. You can’t just disappear into the void, as if you were never here, leaving your work unfinished. You walked so that we could run, and I will run, crawl, swim, fly, and move mountains to make sure you didn’t leave for nothing. When the strength to continue eludes me, when getting out of bed feels impossible, when I’m too broken to keep going, I think of you. You stood tall in the face of unspeakable horror, in a world full of cowards. You fought with every breath and with every “expo marker” you held. For you, for me, for all of us, and for the long life you should have had, I’ll fight back.
Happy birthday, Refaat. I’m looking at you and waiting for you, as you wield a red pen, to meticulously edit this letter and send it back with corrections.

Nate Silver’s first book, The Signal and the Noise, was published in 2012, at the peak of his career as America’s favorite election forecaster. The book was a 534-page bestseller. It set out to answer a perfectly Nate Silver-shaped question: What makes some people better than others at predicting future events? It provided a wide-ranging, deeply engaging introduction to concepts like Bayes’s Theorem, Isaiah Berlin’s The Hedgehog and the Fox, and Philip Tetlock’s work on superforecasting.
Twelve years later, Silver is back with a second book. It is titled On the Edge: The Art of Risking Everything. It is longer than the first one—576 pages, cover-to-cover. And yet it manages to be a much smaller book.
Silver is still in the business of prediction. But where the Silver of 2012 was contributing to the world of public intellectuals, journalists, academics, and policymakers —what he now terms “the Village”—the Silver of 2024 makes his home among the risk-takers and hustlers in Vegas, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley. On the Edge is an ode to the expected-value-maximizing gamblers’ mindset. He calls this the world of “the River.” These “Riverians” are his people. And, he tells us, they’re winning. He sets out to give his readers a tour of the River and distill some lessons that we ought to take from its inhabitants.
The “river” is a term borrowed from poker itself, a game defined by two forms of incomplete information: You don’t know the cards your opponent has been dealt, and you don’t know the cards that are yet to come. In Texas Hold ’em, the final round of betting is called the “river.” It is the moment when the information at your disposal is as complete as it will ever be
Among poker players, this makes the river a rich metaphor. It’s Election Night, waiting for the votes to be tallied, as opposed to a convention or presidential debate, when the shape of the electorate is still undetermined. The best laid plans can be undone by an improbable river card. It’s the final score. The moment of truth. But when Silver talks about “Riverian” culture, he is not drawing upon or referring to any of this established imagery. Instead he deploys it as a catch-all term for embracing risk, identifying profitable edges, and wagering on your beliefs. It’s an odd and awkward writing choice.
The book starts out with a tour of the sheer scale of the literal gambling economy. In 2022 alone, Americans lost $130 billion in casinos, lotteries, and other gambling operations. That’s the amount lost, mind you. The amount wagered was approximately tenfold larger. Gambling in the United States is a $1.3 trillion dollar industry, and still growing.
Elsewhere in the book, he explains how casinos have developed rewards programs and programmed slot machines to keep people hooked. He also lays out the cat-and-mouse game between the online sportsbooks and profitable sports bettors. Much like with casinos and blackjack, if you are good enough at sports betting to reliably turn a profit, then the sportsbooks will stop accepting your bets. The house does not offer games that the house doesn’t win. And, in the United States today, it is very good to be the house.
In Chapter 6, Silver writes, “Here’s something I learned when writing this book: if you have a gambling problem, then somebody is going to come up with some product that touches your probabilistic funny bones. … And whichever product most appeals to your inner degen will be algorithmically tailored to reduce friction and get you to gamble even more.”
Most of us would think this is a bad thing. But Silver stubbornly refuses to reflect on whether the unchecked growth of the gambling economy has any negative externalities. Chapter 3, on the casino industry, reads like a book on the opioid industry lauding the Sacklers for really figuring out how to develop product-market fit.
Structurally, the book is a bit disjointed. It is broken into two parts, with an interlude listing the “thirteen habits of highly successful risk-takers” in between. Part 1 glorifies the gambling industry. The interlude reads like a self-help book: “Successful risk-takers are cool under pressure … have courage … take shots  … are prepared.” Part 2 meanders through Silicon Valley, discussing everything from the fall of Sam Bankman-Fried to Adam Neumann’s latest real estate start-up, along with an entire chapter explaining artificial intelligence through poker analogies. Silver clearly has a lot to say, but it doesn’t entirely hold together. In the acknowledgements at the end of the book, Silver thanks ChatGPT, describing it as his “creative muse.” I’m not convinced the contribution was a positive one.
Missing from the book is any notion of systemic risk. Silver explains the growth of the gambling economy as evidence of a demand-side increase in risk-taking behavior among the post-pandemic public. But this seems more likely to be a supply-side story. The Supreme Court legalized sports betting in 2018. DraftKings and FanDuel wasted no time in flooding the airwaves with enticing advertisements and can’t-lose introductory offers. Casinos—which used to be constrained to Las Vegas and Atlantic City—are now available in nearly every state.
Polymarket, a cryptocurrency-based online prediction marketplace that will let people place bets on essentially anything, went ahead and hired Silver to help promote the product. We legalized vice and removed most of the friction from the system. What’s good for the casinos and the sportsbooks is not necessarily good for society at large.
An increase in gambling addiction is a society-level problem, foisted on the very public officials that Silver derides as residents of “The Village.” Gambling, like cigarettes, should probably face more institutional friction, not less: If you want to waste your money betting on sports or gambling on cards, it ought to at least be moderately difficult to do so.
There’s an unintentionally revealing passage in Chapter 4. Silver devotes nearly four pages to Billy Walters, regaling us with stories of “the best sports bettor of all time.” And in the final paragraph of the section, he lets slip that Walters was sentenced to five years in prison for insider stock trading in 2018. In a footnote, we learn that Walters’s sentence was commuted by Donald Trump on his last day in office. Walters stubbornly maintains his innocence, while Silver notes that “sports bettors often take a cavalier attitude toward inside information in sports. … The Securities and Exchange Commission is much less likely to give you the benefit of the doubt if you’re betting on stocks.”
It’s a crucial passage for two reasons: First, because much of what gives profitable sports bettors an “edge” is materially significant, non-public information. If you can develop sources that will inform you whether the star quarterback is returning from injury, you can use that information to beat the betting lines. The sportsbooks might eventually stop taking your bets if you win too much, but you won’t go to jail for it.
That edge rarely exists in finance, because of systemic risk. The United States has constructed a whole set of regulations and investor protections to mitigate the downside risk of all this “Riverian” gambling, and guard against crime. Poker players, sports bettors, and venture capitalists flourish in regulatory gray zones, where the rules are less well-defined and the edges are available if you’re smart and you’re willing to hustle.
But the second reason is that it invites us to ponder whether there’s any societal value to all this gambling. The stock market may essentially be gambling, but it is a type of gambling that produces valuable byproduct information. Through the activity of the stock market, we are able to gauge aggregate investor opinion on the state and worth of publicly traded companies. What is the social benefit of building an equivalent marketplace for establishing the betting line on NBA games? Sophisticated sports bettors may have a better read than DraftKings on whether the Washington Wizards should be 7.5- or 8-point underdogs in their season opener. But what value does that add to the quality of play, or the fan experience, or anything at all? Why incur and encourage all the systemic risk, when the societal value is effectively nil?
Silver asks and answers none of these questions himself. In the rare passages of the book where he offers some critique of Riverian excess, he makes sure to reassure the reader that he is “not a prude.” In Chapter 8, after mentioning that the sheer, absurd concentration of wealth among Silicon Valley figures like Sam Bankman-Fried might, just maybe, be a bad thing, Silver immediately backpedals, reminding his readers that he plays “poker with venture capitalists and hedge fund guys. I’m a capitalist.”
I suspect this would be a better book if he had less to lose. I myself have been a “+EV” poker player for over 20 years, meaning I win quite a bit more than I lose. I don’t play for the same stakes as Silver, but my poker bankroll includes seven different currencies from four continents. And I can tell you that I would strongly consider committing a few misdemeanors to land a seat in one of those VC/hedge fund games. Silver doesn’t boast about his win rate, but he does let slip that the first time he was invited to play cards with Jason Calacanis and the other hosts of the All-In podcast, he “won enough money to buy a Tesla.”
If I was in Silver’s shoes, I would be wary of writing a book that could get me uninvited from those pillow-soft high-stakes poker games. He can make more money, and have more fun, by offering a gentle exploration, critique, and defense of “the River” than he would by raising questions that would make the notoriously thin-skinned VC crowd uncomfortable. Silver manages to interview a lot of powerful people who rarely speak to journalists, but when they talk to him, they tell him nothing of note.
It also is not clear whether most of the “Riverian” character traits are actually so unique. In the book’s later chapters, Silver rails against “The Village’s” public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Riverians, he tells us, would’ve handled the pandemic differently, because Riverians are expected-value maximizers who understand the fundamental importance of cost-benefit analysis. Hindsight does a lot of heavy lifting for him here, and the notion that public health officials are unfamiliar with cost-benefit analysis is painfully ridiculous. Cost-benefit analysis is not some arcane Riverian wisdom. It is intro-level textbook material.
Silver’s experience in the poker world has convinced him that the world should be more like poker. My own experience with poker has convinced me of the opposite. It is because I am skilled at the game that I think people ought to know what they’re getting into before sitting down at the table with me.
He’s right about one thing, though: The Riverians are indeed winning. The Wynn Casino, DraftKings.com, and Andreessen Horowitz are indeed all phenomenally profitable. The part that eludes him is the reason why. They are winning because we have constructed a system that they are well-positioned to exploit. There is a good book waiting to be written about how they have gamed the system, what it all adds up to, and what it costs the rest of us. But this book’s ambitions are much smaller than that.

What’s the Deal With Casino Rewards and Luxury Casino?
Whenever you look for an online casino in Canada, you always seem to Rai88 stumble upon a Casino Rewards casino. They are literally everywhere. The main reason is they have 17 popular online casinos under their umbrella. But lately it seems like one brand has stood out more than the rest: Luxury Casino.
What makes this casino so popular and why is everyone talking about it? Let’s find out.
Luxury Casino
Luxury Casino is the premium brand within the Casino Rewards network. The casino has been around since 2001 and is licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission and iGaming Ontario. In other words, this is a secure and regulated online casino. Perfect for Canadians and particularly Ontarians.
Their game selection isn’t too shabby either. Their suite is primarily powered by Microgaming, but they also have games from Sling Shot Studios, Alchemy Gaming, Stormcraft Studios, all41studios, Gameburger Studios, Neon Valley Studios, Pear Fiction Studios, Pulse 8 Studios, Fortune Factory Studios, Switch Studios, and Triple Edge Studios. Their live casino games are from Evolution Gaming.
So when it comes to slots, you’ll find hot titles like Immortal Romance 2, Agent Jane Blonde Max Volume, Fire and Roses Joker, Thunderstruck Stormchaser, Lara Croft: Tomb of the Sun, 9 Masks of Fire, and many many more.
According to Dana Nikolic's Luxury Casino review at eCheckCasinos.ca, "The game library features titles with premium themes and superior graphics, often including exclusive or limited-edition games. For example, the brand offers the official Game of Thrones slot via HBO licensing."
They also have a lot of table games like Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat, and even Video Poker and progressive jackpot games.
Bonuses and Promotions
Luxury Casino offers a generous welcome package of $1k spread across the first five deposits. The bonuses are as follows:
First Deposit: 100% match up to $150
Second Deposit: 50% match up to $200
Third Deposit: 25% match up to $300
Fourth Deposit: 50% match up to $200
Fifth Deposit: 100% match up to $150
Just keep in mind that these bonuses come with wagering requirements that must be met before any winnings can be withdrawn.
Loyalty Program
As part of the Casino Rewards network, Luxury Casino participates in a unified loyalty program. That basically means that the more you play, the more loyalty points you earn. And these can later be redeemed across any casino in the network. The VIP program features multiple levels, offering increasingly valuable benefits and exclusive promotions as you advance.
Security and Fair Play
Player security is a top priority at Luxury Casino. The site uses a hardcore SSL encryption to protect your personal and financial information, so a middleman attack won’t leak your info. Moreover, the games are regularly audited by eCOGRA. This is an independent testing agency and one of the most reputable in the industry. So you can be sure the games are fair and fully legit.
Customer Support
Luxury Casino provides 24/7 customer support through live chat and email. To be fully honest, their livechat sucks. It absolutely sucks. You start out by talking to a robot and it takes forever to get connected to a human agent. And when you finally get connected to a human agent, you’ll be slamming your keyboard with your fist. It feels like their human agents aren’t part of the Casino Rewards at all. There is just so much info they don’t have ready at hand. So if there’s anything negative we have to say about this casino, it’s the customer support. It’s actually the only negative thing we could find. We just hope the VIP support is better. Although to be fair, customer support isn’t much better elsewhere with the trend we are seeing now to replace agents with AI bots.

Poker Game Development Cost in 2025: What Startups Must Know
Online poker is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global gaming industry. With millions of users actively engaging in real-money and free-play poker games across platforms, startups and entrepreneurs are increasingly turning to poker game development to launch their own apps. As we step into 2025, understanding the real cost of building a poker platform is essential—not just from a budgetary standpoint, but for strategic planning, monetization, and market entry.
Whether you’re a solo founder, gaming startup, or an investor, this guide gives you a comprehensive look at the cost of poker game development in 2025. We’ll explore the core components of pricing, hidden costs to watch out for, and why hiring a poker game development company in India can be a smart and cost-effective move.
Why Poker Game Development is Gaining Traction in 2025
The digital card game market is on fire. With increasing smartphone usage, better internet connectivity, and rising interest in skill-based gaming, poker is no longer a niche—it’s a mainstream business model. From Texas Hold’em to Omaha and more, platforms are offering a variety of formats and monetization models to capture user attention.
Poker game app development is not just about coding a few game rules; it’s a sophisticated blend of design, user psychology, real-time multiplayer systems, anti-fraud protocols, and backend infrastructure. That’s why many startups prefer working with a specialized poker game development company in India to gain a competitive edge without inflating their budgets.
Core Cost Factors in Poker Game Development
To estimate how much your poker platform will cost to build, you need to understand the primary components that go into poker game development.
Game Modes and Variants The more variants (Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Seven-Card Stud), the higher the complexity. Each requires its own set of rules, mechanics, and UI considerations.
Platform Support (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop) Multi-platform support means more development time and cost. Cross-platform frameworks like Flutter or Unity can reduce some of these expenses.
UI/UX Design A visually engaging, intuitive interface is crucial for retaining players. Custom graphics, animations, and card designs can significantly affect cost.
Backend Infrastructure Real-time multiplayer systems, lobbies, table management, shuffling algorithms, and player matching systems must be secure and scalable.
Monetization Features Integration of payment gateways, chips management, in-app purchases, ad modules, and VIP memberships adds to both time and development cost.
Security and Compliance Poker platforms must include anti-cheating, anti-bot systems, encryption protocols, and sometimes KYC verification systems. These are essential, especially for real-money games.
Admin Panel and Game Management A fully-featured backend for the admin to manage players, run promotions, monitor transactions, and enforce bans is a must.
Add-ons and Advanced Features Chat systems, emoji reactions, loyalty rewards, avatars, tournament modes, and referral programs are optional but highly effective engagement tools.
Average Cost Breakdown of Poker Game Development in 2025
Here’s a rough breakdown of poker game development cost based on scope:
Basic Poker Game (Single Variant, Android only): $15,000 – $25,000 Includes basic UI, multiplayer, chips system, and basic admin panel.
Mid-Level Poker App (Multiple Variants, iOS + Android): $30,000 – $50,000 Includes multiple game modes, payment integration, anti-fraud, and cross-platform UI/UX.
Advanced Poker Platform (Multi-Device, Real Money, Full Features): $60,000 – $100,000+ Includes tournaments, multi-table play, KYC, real-time analytics, dynamic leaderboards, and scalable cloud infrastructure.
Why Work with a Poker Game Development Company in India?
India has become a global hub for game development, especially in real-money gaming. Working with a poker game development company in India offers several strategic advantages:
Cost-Effectiveness Development costs in India are significantly lower compared to Western countries, with no compromise on quality. This enables startups to build MVPs and full-scale poker apps at a fraction of the global market rate.
Skilled Poker Game Developers Indian firms employ experienced poker game developers who understand the nuances of gameplay mechanics, real-time architecture, and compliance.
Customization and Flexibility Many poker game development companies in India offer white-label solutions and custom development services tailored to your budget and timeline.
Faster Time-to-Market Indian developers often follow agile methodologies and can reduce time-to-launch, helping you enter the market quickly.
Post-Launch Support and Scalability A reliable poker game development company in India offers maintenance, bug fixes, feature updates, and cloud scaling as part of ongoing support.
Choosing the Right Poker Game Development Company
Here’s what to consider when selecting a development partner:
Experience in building and launching poker game apps
Understanding of local and international gaming laws
Proven track record and client testimonials
Scalable architecture and tech stack proficiency
End-to-end poker game development services from design to deployment
Avoid choosing the cheapest quote. Instead, focus on quality, feature offerings, support, and customization ability.
Hidden Costs to Watch Out For
Poker game development can come with hidden expenses if you’re not careful. These include:
Server and cloud hosting fees (AWS, Azure)
Licensing costs for third-party APIs (payments, chat, analytics)
Marketing and user acquisition post-launch
App store fees (Apple, Google)
Legal and compliance services (especially for real-money apps)
Understanding and planning for these can help you avoid surprises and stay within budget.
Open Source, White Label, or Custom Development?
Open Source: Very low cost, but high risk in terms of security, stability, and support.
White Label: Ready-to-launch solutions offered by many poker app developers. Affordable, fast, and good for testing the market.
Custom Development: Full control over features, branding, UI, and scalability. Best for serious startups aiming for long-term growth and differentiation.
Must-Have Features in a Poker Game App
To justify your poker game app development investment, your app must include:
Real-time multiplayer gameplay
Secure RNG (Random Number Generator)
In-game currency (chips)
Leaderboards and tournaments
Wallet system and payment integration
User profiles and friend list
Push notifications and email alerts
GDPR and local compliance features
These features not only enhance user experience but also support monetization and retention strategies.
Tech Stack for Poker Game App Development
A well-rounded poker game development company will use the following technologies:
Frontend: Unity, React Native, Flutter
Backend: Node.js, PHP, Java
Database: MongoDB, MySQL
Servers: AWS, Google Cloud, Azure
Security: SSL encryption, Token-based authentication, Cloud Firewalls
Make sure your developer uses scalable and secure technologies that support growth.
Post-Launch Considerations
Once your poker app is live, your work isn’t done. Maintenance and continuous optimization are essential.
Track KPIs like DAUs, ARPU, retention rate
Run regular updates and bug fixes
Launch seasonal promotions and tournaments
Ensure constant customer support
Monitor backend performance and server loads
Choose a poker game development company that offers long-term support plans.
Conclusion
Poker game development in 2025 offers a tremendous opportunity for startups to tap into the growing digital card game market. Whether you’re launching a niche poker app or aiming to compete globally, understanding the cost breakdown and strategic components is crucial.
Working with a poker game development company in India gives startups access to top-tier talent, reduced costs, and scalable solutions. With the right planning, feature set, and execution strategy, your poker game app can not only launch successfully but thrive in a competitive market.
By factoring in key cost variables, avoiding hidden fees, and choosing the right development partner, you can build a robust, engaging, and profitable poker platform that stands the test of time.
