caleb gets cuteness aggression whenever he sees you

caleb tries and I mean he tries to take you seriously when you complain about him taking the last slice. but he won't ever admit that he does it just so to see you all riled up. the way your eyebrows furrow and face pouts while you try to lecture him is almost too adorable

caleb loves when you spent the day helping him build his new airplane model. he purposely picks a difficult design because he loves seeing your concentrated expression as your hold the pieces together, waiting for the glue to dry. and when you get frustrated, he just chuckles softly and holds it together with you

caleb needs to see you in clothes all the time. he almost gets offended when you sit down on his couch after a long day instead of immediately changing into his soft cotton shirt. he goes through his wardrobe once a month, looking for things he doesn't wear anymore just to see what he can add to your side of the closet. there's nothing like seeing you in your most vulnerable state, dressed in his clothes, thinking all mine

armand’s costumes are such an interesting data point re: his nebulous sense of identity.

when analyzing any costume, there are always many factors to consider: the setting, the character’s personal taste and economic constraints, storytelling concerns like tone and genre, etc. with armand, we also need to remember that he’s 500 years old and violently disconnected from his human origins. everything he wears has an element of disguise, selected to blend into a new environment.

armand was enslaved as a child in 16th century delhi, and barely remembers his mortal life. unlike louis - who can return to new orleans after 80 years and reconnect with his past - armand has no home to return to. his whole backstory, even his name, is rife with traumatic subtext, leaving him with an obsessive need for structure and control. this adds an extra layer of meaning to costuming choices that initially seem like straightforward menswear. 

armand’s 1940s wardrobe is very put-together - primarily three-piece suits and coats that make him look wealthier and more formal than louis, who is purposefully dressing down. most of these outfits are tailored to bulk up armand's frame, leaning into the "maitre" persona. and like his business-casual dubai wardrobe, he always leaves his collar open. when i interviewed costume designer carol cutshall, she described this as a symbolic power move, signalling that he's an apex predator who doesn't need to protect his throat.

my personal interpretation is that while armand clearly likes to look good, he has a complicated relationship with attractiveness. he doesn't always want to draw attention. his color palette is shadowy (black, grey, brown, olive green), and he’s much less flashy than the other Théâtre vamps. however when he’s feeling confident and flirty, he becomes more of a power-dresser - for instance his hunting outfit with the big coat and sunglasses, or his habit of wearing kohl.

interestingly, most of armand's 1940s costumes set him apart from the coven. the Théâtre vampires dress like cabaret performers, embracing a lot of period-specific styles. by contrast armand is more timeless and neutral. in fact, due to the relatively minor changes in men's suits over the past 100 years, there's a lot of overlap between his wardrobe in the 1940s, '70s and 2020s:

the rest of the Théâtre squad share an unofficial uniform of boldly clashing monochrome patterns with pops of bright color. meanwhile armand has a very plain wardrobe, emphasizing the image of him as a businesslike authority figure surrounded by zany artistes. he only wears subtle stripes on a few occasions in the '40s, reflecting the recurring prison motif we see in lestat's trial suit and (most famously) the dubai penthouse bedroom:

if we ask the question, "what does this person like to wear?" there are easy answers for lestat, louis and claudia. we understand their tastes, and the motives behind them. but armand is more enigmatic. we can recognize through-lines in his wardrobe, but his "taste" is dominated by whatever role he's currently decided to embody, whether that's a parisian theater director or a real estate mogul in dubai.

the times when he appears to have the most fun with clothing are when he steals a pair of sunglasses from his human dinner (!) and when he's pretending to be rashid. in other words, when he's explicitly performing for an audience. "real armand" is still a mystery.

LET'S TALK ABOUT LOKI'S SHOES (ACTUALLY, HIS WHOLE WARDROBE)

Production costs aside, clothes tell the audience about how characters think of themselves.

Loki's shoes in the S2 finale raised a lot eyebrows, but I find them quite fitting: they are comfortable, practical, and most importantly, they are humble. The camera brings this to our attention to communicate his evolution in character.

Loki has always dressed well, often times ostentatiously. Whether he is at war, passing as a Midgardian, or held captive as an Asgardian prisoner, Loki communicates his social class and sense of superiority through clothing. For him, clothing armors his fragile sense of self and against others' opinions of him. He intends to be perceived as deadly charming but ultimately unapproachable.

His attire in the first Thor movie is roughly equal parts green and gold, signifying his royal status. His style is dressed down for his brother's misadventures in Jotenheim, yet overall both silhouettes are lofty, princely, but not hardened or threatening.

In Avengers, Loki's look has more black and leather, with exaggerated emphasis on his shoulders meant to intimidate as he assumes the role of villain. The silhouette is very hard, heavy, and edgy. Gold detailing is prevalent as well. Combined with the goat's helm, this is Loki's most pretentious outfit, which speaks to an undercurrent of low self-esteem and a compulsive need to impress. There's no mistaking he is the main antagonist of the story.

In Thor 2, Loki's attire is similar to Avengers but the overcoat is exchanged for a less bulky version (perhaps conveying he is less guarded now that the effects of the Mind Stone are no longer influencing him). Loki's role likewise pivots from the harsh lines of a villain to the more flexible edges of a reluctant villain-turned-ally. This aligns with his character arc when he protects both Jane and Thor, seemingly sacrificing himself.

In Thor 3, Loki's silhouette is streamlined even further. The overcoat is done away with in favor of what appears to be a leather doublet, pauldrons, and vambraces. Gold accents are minimal. While stylish, Loki's attire is more practical than showy, and his helm serves the dual purpose of protection as well as weaponry. At this point in his arc, Loki has become a full antihero, joining his brother's side in rescuing as many Asgardians as possible, and eventually dying in a vain bid to protect Thor from Thanos.

The TVA does something very fun and interesting in taking away Loki's ability to dress himself. Since Loki cannot use his magic in the TVA, he is forced to wear the same clothing as his captor/advocate, who eventually becomes his best friend and peer.

Perhaps, on a subconscious level, this helped Loki to feel included. We know by his pwn admission that Loki fears being alone and desperately craves a sense of belonging. At the same time, he intentionally dresses to put people at a distance, thereby protecting himself from potential rejection at the cost of isolating himself further.

When Mobius gives him that TVA jacket for the first time, Loki seems uncharacteristically pleased. It is not an attractive jacket by any means, yet he neither scoffs at it nor refuses to wear it. Instead, Loki puts it on and is content when Mobius says it looks "smart" on him. He continues to dress like Mobius and, indeed, mimic some of his mannerisms such as placing his hands on his hips. Without clothing meant to push people away, Loki opens up, has more fun, and makes friends.

Loki's choice of attire as he assumes the mantle of God of Stories (and time) is fascinating. Setting aside the clear design inspiration from the comics, Loki's silhouette is soft, remarkably so. His colors are earthy hues of green, and the only bit of flare are the light gold trimming and crown. The look brings to mind the garb of sages and wise wizards rather than royalty or warriors. He's powerful yet approachable because there is humility in his bearing. And that humility springs from a well of healthy self-worth, self-love, and a deep love for others.

The shoes are not meant to be attractive. They are meant to help him ascend the throne, nothing more.

“OH DEAR, WHAT HAVE I WALKED IN ON?” YOU GIGGLE, politely covering your mouth as you admire the sight before you. Oscar is sitting at a table within the McLaren hospitality, your daughter sitting on a chair beside him. The young girl is messing around with the makeup you bought her for christmas. It had cars on it, and was designed for children.

The real kicker, though, was your husband, who was sitting there like an obedient dog while she painted his face in a rather bold look. Hot pink blush, bright red lips, and dark blue eyeshadow. He looked like he had a long night, to put it nicely. You didn’t mean to mock her skills, but there was definitely some room for improvement.

Despite your teasing, Oscar just smiled as a greeting. He was rather still as he allowed her to continue with her artistic ministrations, his heart melting at her joyous giggles. “I’m doing Daddy’s makeup so he looks good for the cameras!” She announced proudly, smearing purple eyeshadow on the inner corners of his eyes. “Doesn’t he look pretty?”

“He looks beautiful,” You said as you gently rubbed circles into her back, pressing a kiss to her scalp. “Wow, I’m falling in love all over again.” You tone was drenched in sarcasm, but there was some truth to your words. Seeing him allow your daughter to play, even if it meant sacrificing his own self image, was heart warming. You ruffled the younger girl’s hair before leaning in for a kiss from your husband.

“Ew!” She shrieked when you pulled back, your own lips now smeared in his bright red makeup. He laughed, which made your daughter pout. “Hold still!”

“Alright, I’m sorry,” He said in a jokingly exasperated tone. Your daughter rolled her eyes, sighing dramatically.

“He’s not a very good model,” She grumbled, making you laugh once again. “Mommy will you get my princess wardrobe out?”

“Oh, of course,” You replied eagerly as you rushed off to Oscar’s driver’s room, locating the small wooden chest. You dragged it out, opening it to where both your husband and daughter could see. The mounds of glittery, sparkly fabrics flowed free from the chest, spilling out onto the ground. You bit your lip to stifle a giggle at his face.

“I… Didn’t know your collection was so big, sweetheart,” He said, forcing a smile. Oh if only he knew what was coming for him.

“Wow, Oscar! That is quite the outfit,” A reporter remarks with a huge grin on her face, offering the microphone for his response. He sighed, and the sound faded into a chuckle.

“My daughter helped me prepare for media day.” His voice was monotone, but it was clear he just found the whole thing entertaining. If he didn’t want to do this, he could have said no, but he loved entertaining his little princess. Which is why he stood here now, a dress that was just a little too small for him slapped on top of his typical shorts and t-shirt. Atop his hair, which was pulled into two pigtails that were forming a headache, sat a pretty, sparkly tiara. “I gotta make this quick, though. I have a tea party to attend soon.”

“Did your wife put her up to this?” The reporter clearly found this whole situation very entertaining.

“No. You know, she’s pretty creative. Thought of all of this,” He gestured to himself head to toe, “all by herself.”

Oscar sighed playfully. “Oh, there are the suspects in question!”

He fully whipped around to look for you, immediately lighting up at the sight of you holding your daughter’s hand, pulling her through crowds of people as she giggled and chatted beside you. He had to pause to admire you, taking in your pretty glow with a fond expression.

He pulled you in for a hug and kiss when you got close, though you followed it by wiping your lips with a grossed out look. “There are my girls,” He mumbled before crouching down to kiss his daughter’s forehead.

“You’re gonna ruin your dress, Daddy!”

“You’re right, I’m sorry.” He stood back up, ruffling her hair. She huffed dramatically and fixed it, straightening out her matching tiara.

“Two princess in the paddock today,” The interviewer said as the camera panned down to your daughter, who grinned at the attention.

But Oscar’s eyes were on you. He couldn’t stop watching as you laughed with your child— His child, too. Under his breath he replied, “three,” with that lovesick grin of his.

Tired of the attention, he spoke again to divert the various eyes on him. “Sweetheart, why don’t we go see if uncle Lala wants a makeover too?”

“Yeah!”

With that being said, all three of you were off to torment Lando.

Aaron Hotchner was usually not one for excess. His wardrobe was practical and professional, his tastes minimalistic, and his life, outside of Jack, revolved around efficiency and exuding authority on the job. Sure he had splurged occasionally on a stray high-quality tie here and there as well as his Rolex watch. At least that was until you entered his life.  

The first gift was a tie — a deep navy one in silk with subtle pinstripes. It came in a sleek wrapped box with some designer brand he had never even heard of before. You’d handed it to him with a casual smile, brushing off his initial protests with a light, “Aaron, I saw it and thought of you. Let me spoil you for once.”  

He wore it the next day, paired with his standard black suit, and noticed how it caught the light in the mirror. “Looks good,” he muttered to himself, brushing his hand over it. As hesitant as he had been to accept it, he was thankful for the present and happy that you'd chosen one that wasn't smothered in logos or brand names.

Then came the cuff links. They were sterling silver and engraved with his initials. He opened the box late one evening after you handed it to him over dinner. “You didn’t have to,” he said softly, though his smile betrayed how much he loved them.  

“Of course, I didn’t have to,” you replied, leaning in to press a kiss to his temple. “But you deserve nice things, Aaron. You do so much good without even expecting a thanks.”  

And so it continued. A Louis Vuitton duffel bag for his work trips, a black leather wallet that somehow managed to look even more professional than the one he’d carried for years, and a collection of even more ties that were understated yet undeniably luxurious and seemed to multiply in his closet every so often.  

At first, he rotated the items slowly into his everyday wardrobe, unsure if they would draw attention. But one particularly chaotic morning, he grabbed the LV duffel, clipped on the cuff links, and shrugged into a jacket before heading into the office having gotten an urgent notification for a case.  

It didn’t take long for the team to notice.  

“Uh… Hotch?” Morgan’s voice cut through the usual buzz in the conference room as Hotch entered. “Is that a Louis Vuitton bag you’re carrying?”  

Hotch glanced at him briefly, setting the duffel down by the door before striding towards the front of the room to grab the file Garcia was holding outstretched for him. “Yes. Why?”  

Morgan blinked. “Why? Man, you’ve been holding out on us. Since when do you roll up looking like you just stepped out of GQ Magazine?”  

Emily leaned back in her chair, eyebrows raised. “Is that a new tie, too? That’s at least Tom Ford.”  

Hotch adjusted his tie instinctively. “It’s not. It’s Brioni.”  

“Oh, excuse us,” JJ chimed in throwing her hands up and exchanging an amused glance with Emily.  

“I’m sorry,” Spencer Reid piped up, pushing his glasses up his nose. “Are those cuff links monogrammed?”  

“Okay, seriously,” Morgan said, crossing his arms. “What’s going on, Hotch? You win the lottery or something? Cause if your salary is high enough for those purchases Imma have to talk to Strauss about a raise.”  

Hotch, shrugged lightly as he opened his case file. “No. My girlfriend has… a habit of giving gifts.”  

The room fell silent for a beat before Emily’s jaw dropped. “Wait, girlfriend? You’ve been holding out on us in more ways than one!”

"Who is she I need details," Garcia cut into the conversation, her excitement starting to bubble over.

JJ smirked. “Are you telling me she just gives you designer gifts casually? I agree with Garcia, who is this woman?”  

Hotch allowed himself the smallest of smiles as he glanced up from his paperwork. “Someone who insists I deserve the finer things.”  

“Damn,” Morgan muttered, shaking his head. “Where can I find one of those?”  

“Maybe start with charm school,” Emily teased.  

As the team bantered, Hotch’s phone buzzed on his desk. A message from you:  

Miss you already. Hope you’re putting the cuff links to good use. Dinner at my place when you get back?

He smiled quickly at his phone before typing back a quick reply.  

Always. I’ll bring the wine.  

When he looked up, the team was staring at him, curious. “What?” he asked, his tone amused, knowing fully well that they wouldn't stop bothering him about you until he eventually agreed to let them meet you.  

“Nothing,” Emily said, though her grin suggested otherwise. “Just trying to imagine Aaron Hotchner in love with a rich fashionista.”  

“Not just a fashionista,” Morgan added, gesturing toward the duffel. “An angel sent from the heavens, apparently.”  

Hotch shook his head, lifting his file up in the air in a quick and smooth motion as if to remind them why they were there. “Focus, everyone. We have a case.”  

A few days later, when you saw Aaron again, he mentioned the team’s reaction with a mix of exasperation and amusement.  

“I think they’re more interested in my wardrobe than the case,” he said, loosening his tie as he sat beside you on the couch.  

You laughed softly, running a hand through his hair. “Let them wonder. They’ll get used to it eventually.”  

“I’m not sure they ever will,” he muttered, leaning into your touch.  

“Good,” you teased, leaning in to kiss him. “I like keeping them on their toes.”
