I had a dream last night where the Nibelheim incident was averted because Sephiroth was playing Pokemon Go, so he lead them up Mt. Nibel and all the while ZackCloud is starry eyed going "Wow Sephiroth! You're so cool! How do you know this is a shortcut?" and Sephiroth goes "No, there's a Rattata around this area that I want to catch." Actually getting to the reactor was a hassle because he was more focused on the Pokemon than the mission. Then he did end up in the library perusing the texts, but he got an alert on his phone that there was a rare Pokemon outside. He pushed ZackCloud out of the way in a hurry, ZackCloud says "NO GOD PLEASE NO DON'T BURN THE VILLAGE DOWN" and Sephiroth goes "OUT OF THE WAY TWINK FRIGIBAX IS OUTSIDE" and then I woke up in a cold sweat.

Himalayan Linguistics, Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics
In 2024 I have returned to my role as an editor of Himalayan Linguistics, and have joined the editorial boards of two other journals; Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics. I've published in each of these journals before joining the editorial boards, and it's lovely to be involved in three journals across three different areas of interest.
Himalayan Linguistics is a fully Open Access journal, while Linguistics Vanguard and the Australian Journal of Linguistics have a mix of open access and licensed content. If you are an academic and your work is relevant to any of these three journals, please consider them for your next research paper!
Himalayan Linguistics
One of my first academic publications was with Himalayan Linguistics in 2013. I've been so grateful for all the work of the editorial team over the years that I joined the board, and then stepped up as editor in 2022. My co-editors are Gregory Anderson and You-Jing Lin.
Himalayan Linguistics costs nothing to read, and charges no fees for publishing. We're lucky to have the University of California eScholarship infrastructure for publishing. It's my favourite model for academic research.
From the website:
Himalayan Linguistics is an online peer-reviewed journal specializing in languages of the Himalayan region. We publish articles, book reviews, book notices and field reports in the semi-annual issues of the journals. We also publish grammars, dictionaries, and text collections as free-standing publications in our “Archive” series. Himalayan Linguistics is free; that is, there is no subscription fee, and there is no fee charged to authors who publish their papers in HL.
My publications in HL, Superlinguo summary posts:
The relationship between Yolmo and Kagate: Article in Himalayan Linguistics
Reported evidentiality in Tibeto-Burman languages
Linguistics Vanguard
Linguistics Vanguard launched in 2015 and I was eyeing it off for years before being delighted to have a chance to submit a paper for the 2023 Special Issue on scifi corpus methods. Yup, it's the kind of journal that's cool enough to have a whole special issue on using corpora to do linguistics on scifi. I have another paper in the revisions process with LV on lingcomm. I can attest to the speedy process and focus on conciseness. I'm delighted to join as an area manager for gesture and multimodal submissions.
Linguistics Vanguard is a new channel for high quality articles and innovative approaches in all major fields of linguistics. This multimodal journal is published solely online and provides an accessible platform supporting both traditional and new kinds of publications. Linguistics Vanguard seeks to publish concise and up-to-date reports on the state of the art in linguistics as well as cutting-edge research papers. With its topical breadth of coverage and anticipated quick rate of production, it is one of the leading platforms for scientific exchange in linguistics. Its broad theoretical range, international scope, and diversity of article formats engage students and scholars alike.
My publications in LV, Superlinguo summary posts:
From Star Trek to The Hunger Games: Emblem gestures in science fiction and their uptake in popular culture
Australian Journal of Linguistics
The Australian Linguistic Society is my local linguistics org, and I'm delighted to join an editorial board full of people whose work I deeply respect. I'm also happy to report the AJL recently adopted the Tromsø Recommendations for data citation.
The Australian Journal of Linguistics is the official journal of the Australian Linguistic Society and the premier international journal on language in Australia and the region. The focus of the journal is research on Australian Indigenous languages, Australian Englishes, community languages in Australia, language in Australian society, and languages of the Australian-Pacific region. The journal publishes papers that make a significant theoretical, methodological and/or practical contribution to the field and are accessible to a broad audience.
My publications in AJL, Superlinguo summary posts:
Ten years of Linguistics in the Pub (Australian Journal of Linguistics)
Revisiting Significant Action and Gesture Categorization

I got the organization xiii manga from 3dayama3 and I can't read most of it without a dictionary but at a glance it seems that almost the entire time Zexion is in the spotlight, he is being fucked up about Saïx and Xemnas and his role in the Organization. Saïx also can't stand him. Which is great because 3dayama3 has been doing wonderful Org XIII art for a verrrrry long time and that means I am not leaning too much into Zexion Saïx rivalry after all

@the-technicolor-whiscash - By accident really, they didn't advertise that as the case. I desperately needed work so I went in for this weird group interview, they hired me right after and I was in for training the next day. The training was super odd for a reception job, and I was in this back office filling in worksheets, and working through this huge binder (which they said would take me about a month) There was a bunch of special terminology they wanted me to learn, (I'd later realize this was scientology lingo) (there was also a scientologist children's book they made us read to explain why we'd get in trouble if we yawned but that's a whole other thing) I only realized what was going on when I had to look up a word during training from the special veterinary dictionary they provided. I was flipping through it and saw that 'org' had an entry- that rang a bell- and then 'fascism', which I thought was real weird for a vet dictionary. I flipped to the front cover and saw that the author was Hubbard like it was a fucking jumpscare. And then I really started looking around and saw dianetics on the lowest shelf in the office. I ended up just saying fuck it and pretending I didn't realize- because I really needed the job at the time, and I was honestly pretty curious about how weird it would get. There was a bunch of odd to downright insane shit that went on and I only worked there for like 3 or 4 months, before it got so toxic that I had to leave

do you have any recommendations for learning japanese? any handbooks, dictionaries, sites and such?
I will begin by saying that I am not the best person to ask this question. I am not fluent at Japanese and, barring some unfathomable miracle, I never will be. The time that I have for studying Japanese has become less and less in recent months, and it is not unlikely that I will be forced to give it up entirely in the near future. But I will answer this question to the best of my ability.
Of the four people who I knew of in person who were able to become fluent in Japanese extremely quickly, I partially learned of the tactics of two of them. One of them used an app named Yomiwa, which can be used on Japanese news websites to provide convenient English translations of the words that are used in the Japanese sentences. I have never used it much because it seems to be intended for people with more time on their hands, but this app is either free or easily affordable.
The other aforementioned person who became fluent I think used a website called Animelon, which has/had anime episodes with Japanese subtitles. I don't know whether it still exists. This person also recommended a light novel series that is titled "Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear", which apparently has Japanese sentences that are easy to read. This person, by memorising a minimum of 15 additional Japanese words a day, attained full Japanese fluency in ONE YEAR. A mind-blowing feat for someone who was in their late teens and didn't even live in Japan.
A free website for learning Japanese that was recommended to me years ago is named imabi dot org. I used it for learning kana, but not much after that. I felt that its explanation of how to write Kanji could have been better. I never made a serious attempt to learn grammar from it.
For another electronic option, try looking up Japanese apps for learning Kanji (漢字). These are mostly intended for Japanese children, but can be useful to any learners of the language. I don't think that any of these apps are free, but they should be affordable.
The following is all stuff that costs money.
The books that I was taught with were the "Genki" books and the textbook pictured below. The Genki textbooks and workbooks are for absolute beginners, and the workbooks also have an answer key book available. The pictured textbook does also have a workbook, but I don't think that that workbook has an answer key book for it.

This book series is top-of-the-line for learning Japanese grammar, so look no further. They are quite expensive, but are worth every cent. There is also one for beginners, which is yellow, although the Intermediate one isn't all that hard to use. As you might expect, the Advanced one uses long and complex Japanese sentences with a lot of technical terms, so it isn't for everyone.

I am not sure whether this book is still in print, but it is easily the most user-friendly large Kanji guide that I have found so far. Kanji are displayed in two columns on each page, and with plenty of compounds. Kodansha has other Kanji books as well, but this is the best one. It will be worth trying to find.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Although it contains plenty of Kanji, many of the English translations that are provided for the words that use these Kanji are extremely inadequate. Worse yet, the definitions of each Kanji's meaning are written in Japanese, which is of no help to people who are still learning. The example sentences for how to use the words that have Kanji are mostly good, though, so I will give it that.

Japanese children's books can also be helpful. This one has a huge number of useful Japanese nouns, and its lack of Kanji makes it a good option for beginners.

In any case, though this is hopefully obvious, remember not to literally judge a book by its cover. A Japanese textbook that has pretty photographs or patterns or anime characters on the front is not necessarily going to be good for studying from. The one shown below is not bad, but there are better resources out there.

I hope that this helped.

Ok, yesterday I posted about an assessment that I was having a really bad time with because it forced me to argue with bigots and I was incredibly enraged by that.
But today I am calm, because gamers,
we fucking got em.
Like legit only today did I realise that they built their entire argument upon a single assumption that I can kick out from under them to bring their entire argument crumbling down. That weakness is a single concept: “Design”. They argue that “normal” is defined as functioning in accordance with its design. But the question is “designed by who or what?”
They cite a paper from 1945 about how “in biology design is dictated by intended function”, but the issue there is that intended function is also determined by design, the entire thing is circular logic! And so who or what is responsible for this “design”? Well, they never state this in the paper, but the orgs responsible for this paper are associated with the Christian Right, and so the answer to that question is “God”. This not only assumes the existence of God, but also has the troubling implication that God designed humans purely to be cisgender and heterosexual. This is a problem because people are queer, not because they choose to be, but because they simply are. This means that either the orgs who wrote this paper are wrong, or that God makes mistakes.
I’m an apostate, I know for a fact that “God makes mistakes” goes against pretty much all theology ever written. You take away their idea of “design” and their entire argument turns to ash and blows away in the gentle breeze.
Also, looking at this paper now that I’ve completely invalidated it, some of the shit they try to pull is so fucking funny.
They present “de-transitioning statistics”, but you’ll never fucking guess where they came from, because we are at the source right now. They got statistics from a FUCKING TUMBLR POLL. Holy shit, they presented this shit to Parliament, how fucking embarrassing for them! Tumblr! Because Tumblr definitely doesn’t contain any echo chambers! It certainly isn’t responsible for any misinfo!
Beyond that, a whole bunch of their sources are random fucking news articles, if I did that I’d get laughed out of university forever! (unless my stated goal was specifically analysing news media).
They use a Biology paper on sexual dimorphism like it’s some kind of epic gotcha, they deliberately misinterpret sources that directly contradict them, they make reference to papers written by TERFS (one of which I went looking for, and only found reviews written by other feminists dunking on it mercilessly for being a terrible paper).
All their medical information comes from the early 2000’s, nothing more recent? Nothing from the mid to late 2010’s or even 2020 or 2021 when the paper was published? What’s wrong? Surely it’s not like those in positions of authority within the Medical profession have come to overwhelmingly disagree with you on everything you believe, right?
Another highlight comes when they say “To paraphrase one feminist writer on these issues” and then never state who this mystery feminist is, and just leave the statement completely lacking citation.
They also cite dictionaries to define words constantly, which is pathetic. You define the concepts you use yourself. Letting a dictionary do your thinking for you is some weak shit, dictionaries are good for giving you a quick definition of a commonly used word you don’t know, not to give you your understanding of broad concepts you intend to use in debate and discussion.
Also, just to finish off, in order to express my response to so much of that sad excuse for a paper, I created this:
It’s all such shit, I’m arguing with fuckwits.
