soon after dropping down in the sewer, barton soon began to regret his decision of ever thinking to use it as an escape route. it was super disgusting, to say the least. the air in it felt stagnant and smelled a little bit like something had curled up, then proceeded to die in the vast tunnel system that it consisted of. and not to mention that his pants were completely soaked up to his ankles with some mystery liquid that came from it — never again, barton thought. he'd rather get caught than have to wonder what the hell was on his legs right now.

a loud groan of displeasure came from him as he climbed out of whatever that was and onto the almost sidewalk-like area next to him. thankfully, he'd been able to grab a flashlight before he had to make his untimely escape from the gcpd and just as he turned it on, then pointed it forward... of course there was someone there. barton felt like his heart had nearly jumped out of his chest at the suddenness of it and jumped back a foot before covering his face with one of his hands. he laughed, but not because anything about this was particularly humorous to him. he was just in sheer disbelief as he leaned his head up and shook his head as if he couldn't believe this was happening.

❝ oh, my god. what the actual shit are you doing here just standing here in the dark? god damn weirdo, i should slap some sense into you just for scaring me half-to-death, ❞ barton turned his head to the side to avoid looking at the other, all whilst he rubbed his face and let out another laugh, this time half-suppressed. what in the fresh hell was even going on in this city anymore? the dollmaker felt like he was much too old to be keeping up with all of these new rogues that were popping up, he thought, as he faced the other once more. oh. something about the gas mask they wore seemed vaguely familiar, so maybe they weren't new after all.

barton sighed before wiping some blood off of his grotesque looking mask, only for it to hit the sewer wall, ❝ no, it's not mine. do i look like i'm dying to you? i was just about to kill someone before... well, you don't really need to know exactly what happened. just that they're looking for me so we should really get away from the opening to the sewer, ❞ the dollmaker stated, frustration oozing from his voice as if he thought it should be obvious that this wasn't his blood. he aggressively gestured with his full palm up towards the deeper part of the tunnel. ❝ we can do introductions later. stop looking at me and go. ❞

Cryptids & Creatures of Folklore Drawtober Day 26 — Beebe's Abyssal Fishes

In the early 1930s, marine biologist William Beebe and engineer Otis Barton designed and built the bathysphere. Beebe would go on to use this spherical submersible for 35 trips to explore and document what had previously been unreachable depths of the sea and observe its residents in their natural habitat for the first time. He made these dives off the coast of Bermuda and would reach depths of over 3000 feet.

During these trips, Beebe observed and described a few fish which have not been seen since. These fish were:

The Pallid Sailfin — torpedo-shaped fish approx. 2 ft long with a diminutive tail and large fins. Beebe said this fish was a sickly pale color.

The Abyssal Rainbow Gar — small gar-like fish with bright crimson heads, deep blue bellies, and yellow tails. Only four inches long. Beebe witnessed a school of four of these fish swimming vertically.

Five-Lined Constellation Fish — a round fish with five rows of bright yellow bioluminescent markings surrounded by smaller purple markings.

Bathysphaera or the Giant Dragonfish — a 6 ft long dragonfish with a row of bright bioluminescent markings down its sides. It had two long tendrils with glowing bioluminescent orbs on the ends.

Three-Starred Anglerfish — an anglerfish with three tendrils ending in bioluminescent lures sprouting from its head.

Midmorning on June 11, 1930, a barge called the Ready, bearing the staff of the Department of Tropical Research, floated off the coast of the island of Nonsuch in the Bermuda Archipelago. Men in white sailor’s caps and overalls gathered around a four-and-a-half-foot steel ball called the bathysphere as an enormous winch lifted it off the deck. The men stabilized the ball as it wheeled outward, dangling above the surface of the sea. It had three front-facing holes grouped tightly together like eyes. Suspended and swinging on the cable, it seemed to peer down at the choppy water.

The bathysphere would be the first submersible to bring humans down into the deep ocean. The plan was to drop it repeatedly in the same place, going lower and lower, studying the column of water directly below. What creatures lived down there? In what numbers? Would populations dwindle as they moved deeper? The ocean was so vast and unknown, whatever insights could be gained would mark an epochal expansion of biological knowledge.

DTR scientist Gloria Hollister watched the winchmen lower the steel ball into the sea. When it splashed down and disappeared, she took a seat, picked up a canvas-bound notebook that served as the expedition log, and readied herself.

Photos show her with a focused expression, a telephone receiver shaped like an old hunting horn attached to her neck and a small speaker pressed to her right ear. She kept her chin slightly tucked as she listened and spoke and took preliminary notes. The wire from her receiver ran off the edge of the deck and into the water, attached to the bathysphere now sinking toward the ocean’s depths.

Inside the ball, curled up and occupying themselves with various tasks, were two skinny men: Otis Barton and William Beebe. They had to be skinny because the opening to crawl into the bathysphere was less than two feet wide. Barton, who’d designed the ball and overseen its production, monitored the water seal of the 400-pound door, the functioning of the oxygen tanks that provided eight hours of breathable air and the cartons of soda lime to absorb the carbon dioxide exhaled by the occupants. He checked the telephone battery and the blower that circulated air.

As they sank, the temperature inside cooled, and water condensed on the ceiling of the ball, dripping down to form puddles at the bottom.

The ball was fitted with two three-inch quartz windows. There were supposed to be three, but one of the quartz panes was faulty, so its opening had to be plugged with more steel.

Beebe, a bird scientist and proto-ecologist, curled up as close to the panes as possible. Entranced by the undersea world, he was highly aware of his status as witness to something no human had ever seen. An energetic man with infectious enthusiasm, he was already famous for his popular books describing trips around the world tracking pheasants, for an expedition up the Himalayas and for risking his life to observe an erupting volcano in the Galápagos. He was 52 years old, bald and bony and almost knock-kneed, with a thin but stately voice pronouncing his observations as he descended. He’d been all over the world but never lost his New Jersey accent, so worlds and birds came out woylds and boyds.

I wore the VHS of it out and would fall asleep to it close to every night. And TGM was such a beautifully done sequel I actually sobbed in the theaters the first time I saw it (and then saw it 6 more times...)

Character Actor

Eugene Barton Evans (July 11, 1922 – April 1, 1998)  Actor who appeared in numerous television series, television films, and feature films between 1947 and 1989.

Evans portrayed the authoritarian but wise father Rob McLaughlin on the 1956-1957 television series My Friend Flicka.  In 1960, Evans was cast as Otis Stockert in "The Frontiersman" on the Western series Wichita Town. The same year, he was cast as Boone Hackett in the episode "Die Twice" of the Western series Johnny Ringo. He was cast in 1960 as army sergeant Dan Phillips in the episode "The Quota" of Riverboat. In the story, Phillips shanghais Grey Holden (Darren McGavin) and a crew member of the river vessel Enterprise to meet the army's "quota" for new recruits.

In 1961, Evans guest-starred as Sheriff Tom Wilson in "Incident on the Road Back" in Rawhide. He then was cast as Walter Kopek, an undercover agent of the United States Treasury Department in the 1963 episode "The Moonshiners" of GE True, hosted by Jack Webb. In this episode's plot, Kopek moves against a bootlegging operation in Florida run by the mobster Bill Munger (Robert Emhardt).

Evans was cast as the historical Winfield Scott Stratton, a miner in Colorado, in the 1964 episode "Sixty-Seven Miles of Gold" on Death Valley Days, hosted by Stanley Andrews.

In 1966, Evans appeared on the drama series Perry Mason as Sheriff "Moose" Dalton in "The Case of the Scarlet Scandal".  In the fall of 1976, Evans starred on the adventure series Spencer's Pilots.

In January 1979, Evans appeared as Garrison Southworth in one episode of Dallas. He guest-starred in 10 episodes of Gunsmoke. In 1965, Evans guest-starred as Jake Burnett in the episode "Vendetta" of The Legend of Jesse James. Two years later, he appeared as Deedricks in the episode "Breakout" of Custer.

In January 1982, Evans performed in the role of war reporter Clayton Kibbee in an episode of CBS's M*A*S*H titled "Blood and Guts". (Wikipedia)

Otis didn't quite scowl at what the other man said, but the words did hearken back to what his father spent half his life telling him, trying to get him to do something useful or productive with his spare time. The only things that came from years of that was dozens of unread books, half-working knowledge of how to ride a horse, and a stunning knack for playing the violin. Anything to “get his mind off those damn rats”.

“If I don't spend my own free time, someone will come along and try and spend it for me. If I wanted that, I wouldn't be living underground away from everybody else,” he muttered, finally angling his head towards Barton. “But by all means, throw me some ideas. Who knows, one or two might be something I'm actually interested in.”

This was a magnificent picture book style nonfiction book about the first two people to explore the deep ocean, engineer Otis Barton and explorer Will Beebe. These two men had a specially created capsule built, the bathysphere. It was barely able to hold both of them, and was connected to the surface by a telephone communication system.

Their dive, which went down over 700 feet was treacherous, there were leaks, and sparks from the wiring. Despite the danger, and the fear, the two men persevered and completed their dive and returned safely to the surface. While they were below they saw some fascinating creatures including jellyfish and squid.

The illustrations were in a painted style and vividly colored. The ocean pages were all various shades of deep blue, the surface pages, more yellow and brighter colors. The distinction really reinforced what the book was discussing.

This book is non fiction, but in the style it is in it is suitable for upper elementary and above.
