What are some of your favorite pieces of art/ art that has made you think a lot?

this is such a cheesy cop-out answer, but there's a lot of things that im going to struggle remembering because of 1. how situational the experience was (as in, the context in which i experienced the piece) 2. how wide the word "art piece" is. 3. the great fortune to have been born to parents with strong artistic sensibilities and a love of travel/education. so these are like. really weird and specific but maybe thats the way it should be:

let's start with the most overly dramatic: st. paul's cathedral in london has guided tours where they take you into rooms and let you mill around before moving to the next one. my family took a trip overseas as a really, really big special vacation to celebrate my sister and i graduating from high school (we're not twins, we just combo'd it after she graduated) that i was too brain-broken and teenage to fully appreciate. its a beautiful cathedral but i was in my edgy internet atheist stage and refused to be impressed by it until i stood over a grate in the floor. through the grates you can see the crypt that you visit next. but standing over the grate, someone below started to sing something hymnal and very catholic. and i realized i was the only one who could hear it because of the crowd chatter. and it made me feel, in the moment, so special and so lonely in a way that i still think about, a lot. it was for me only. divine providence.

a date with adam to a place i had no idea existed but he had been to before: the bad art museum, which is split over like 3 different buildings in a bizarre way. we only went to the one where you have to buy a ticket to a movie as entry and it was some truly lovely bad art and made me sad how inaccessible it was but resolute about my love of the nuances of uncelebrated anti-art masterpieces. then we watched "assassination nation" and it was fucking terrible. great date.

reading the theory regarding the "venus of willendorf" being a self portrait as a 20-something year old and running into the bathroom to take my clothes off and look down at myself and having my mind blown. not just by how much i instantly understood it, but because of the tugging feeling on my heart when i feel that strand of history connecting women artists driven by that unknown compulsion to create for creations sake!

similarly, seeing artemisia gentileschi's work next to her fathers and realizing how much she outclassed him in every single way and feeling the tugging feeling again, but this time with a dark woe of realization of how history minimizes achievement and talent when it eases a narrative

reading jane erye's descriptions of herself and her approaches to her plights and for the first time feeling like someone had walked a path that i currently found myself lost on.

reading 1984 as a middle schooler and becoming so angry at the ending i threw the book across the room (something i had never done before and never did again in my life) and stormed out of my room to complain to my mom lol. IT REALLY UPSET ME!!!

reading les miserables for the first time and weeping piteously for days after the ending and having it impact my brain so hard it re-wired how i think about the concept of "legacy" and what it means to matter in the world and how love is nothing without the courage to stand up for it. and that mercy should, and will, always supersede unwavering justice (hard lesson to remember, maybe im due for a re-read)

sneaking into my parents room to read the books i wasnt supposed to yet as a really little kid lol. my mom used to get "dykes to watch out for" in a newsletter she was subscribed to! but i didnt read those bc they were dumb relationship comics for grown-ups. i wanted to read about opus the penguin and lee iacocca, as if i knew who that was. my mother's comic collection was the single most influential constant in my life. knowing that i was exposed to bill watterson's commentary about his own work via the big collections my mom owned probably explains a lot about what's wrong with me. but she also had a lot of berke breathed before he fully wussed out

the general experience of playing a video game that you arent supposed to/when you arent supposed to is probably one of the most freeing means of meaningless rebellion as a kid that everyone should experience. i used to be up playing pokemon past my bedtime under my covers with a huge heavy rubber flashlight i stole from the kitchen and had to replace every morning without getting caught once i was done with it. god, the days before backlit screens we had to get really fucking wild with it. in high school i would wake up at 5:00am, sneak into the computer room where the ps2 was and play an hour of FFX bc its the longest fucking non-persona game in the world, stop playing before my mom woke up at 6:00am and sneak back into bed. if i hit a part where i couldnt save i would just turn the screen off and come back to it tomorrow lol. secrets......

reading the "pictures for sad children" arc about paul, who is a ghost, finally losing it and going on a rant about how it has never mattered how thin a computer screen is. they were right and reading it helped me articulate and understand a growing feeling of restless frustration at the world around me that i felt singular and alone in. im glad that last i heard that artist is doing ok. i hope they recognize the incredible value in their work as imperfect as they perceived it to be. i do not think they would be happy to know that their old work was impactful, but i hope they realize that what people are able to tease out of their work is meaningful, at least to me it is. ill transcribe the comic rather than repost it i think: paul [while smashing electronics]: "have i told you about [bam] how nerds destroy the world take conspicuous consumption as a lifestyle choice and combine it with early hardware adoption and you have great swaths of gadgetry out of stock because they're incrementally better than the last model and there are landfills full of functioning electronics wasted time, resources, money, etc. the best part is that these things were never necessary it has never mattered how thing a computer is." Librarian Tidbits (Names & the USA)

Fun fact about the Ace self-inserts: almost all of them are either from the USA (or at least one parent is) or spent a significant amount of time there. Because I cannot separate my American-ness from the s/is.

And all most of their names were very intentionally picked when I started building them.

Chishiki (MHA) -> Knowledge (Japanese); her Quirk is about knowing things

Chishiki moved to the US after Oboro "died" in their third year. She finished high school there and then went onto college and eventually got her doctorate. She spent a portion of her PhD program studying All Might. Worked as a US military asset for a while. Moves back to Japan just in time for the War to be over.

Dokusha (TR) -> Reader (Japanese); reading is the only thing she's able to 'keep' when she moves to Japan

Dokusha's father (brother to Takemichi's mother) moved to the US when he graduated from high school. Dokusha was born and raised there until she moves to Japan to live with her aunt and the other Hanagakis after the rest of the Dokushas die in a house fire.

Plicarta (BC) -> Folded (Latin); her paternal line of Magic users all have paper/folding based Magic

Henshuu (HQ 1) -> Edit (Japanese); she works for a publishing company as an editor

Henshuu moved to the US after graduating from high school for college. She didn't come home to Japan until years later, when her father got sick. She eventually starts working at Karasuno as the second year English teacher, where she reconnects with Keishin.

Wright (HQ 2) -> Write (English; not the actual derived meaning "wood worker"; I went off of the fact that it sounds like "write"); she's an editor for the newspaper club at Karasuno High

Wright was born and raised in Japan to American parents. They had moved to Japan for their work, and she came along a year later. Her parents eventually divorced because her father was given a better offer in the US, but Wright already had friends and school activities in Japan, so her mom decided to stay instead of completely uprooting their lives. She spent summers and winter break with her father in the US up until her second year of high school.

Drucker (HQ 3) -> Printer (German); she owns a bookstore and mostly carries English publications/English translations

Drucker was born and raised in the US. When Hajime Iwazumi went to the US to further his education as an athletic trainer, she was enlisted as his English tutor/American guide. They became really close friends. On a school break, they went to Brazil and hung out with Hinata and Oikawa (she slept with Oikawa). They go back to the US and eventually Iwa goes back to Japan. Later, she visits him for a week and because of her severe burnout, she quits her job and moves to Japan two months later. It only took her about a month to find her shop.

Kamikaku (Dr.S) -> God Write (Japanese ("Kami kaku")); she brings writing and books to the Stone World which makes her the God of Writing in a way (mirrors "Ishigami" being "Stone God")

Kamikaku was born and raised in Japan to American parents. They had moved to Japan for their work, and she came along a year later. They changed their names legally to assimilate better. They lived in the same apartment building as the Ishigamis and once Byakuya moved overseas to work for NASA, they made sure Senkuu was fed and cared for. Her family summered in the US, but Ace eventually stopped going along so that she could keep up academically with Senkuu.

Kyori's mother moved to Japan from the US on a whim after graduating from college. She fell in love with a guy that stopped for the same sidewalk light (opposite sides of the road, opposite directions) every morning on her way for coffee. After three years, he worked up the courage to run across the street (dodging cars) before their light could turn so that he could walk with her to get her coffee. And the rest is history.

Genjitsu (BSD) -> Reality (Japanese); as The Author, her Ability allows her to affect reality (there's also a whole 'reality is what you make it' bit to her story)

In her universe (the BEAST universe) she's originally born and raised in the US, with a different name—Maxine Leabhar (Irish for "book")—but during a semester abroad in Japan, she's booted out of her universe and into the canon one. "Genjitsu" is the name given to her by the Special Division of Unusual Powers (just in case someone decides to find the Maxine Leabhar in the canon universe, there's no misunderstandings). It's a little on the nose, but no one thinks anything of it (Natsume Souseki figures it out real quick). Her cover stories for her 'better' English is her pursuing an English lit degree and her 'bad' Japanese is the result of "head trauma" 👍

Flam (FF) -> One of the basic patterns of drumming (Origin?); Karim is her twin brother 🤷‍♀️

She is fascinated with the Old World and spends far too much of her time tracking down possible information about it. The US is of particular interest to her (it's the religious diversity).

de Grantaine (OHSHC) -> of Grantaine (technically French, "Grantaine" doesn't seem to have an Origin? And isn't a real location?); she is Tamaki Suoh's cousin on his mother's side

She was born and raised in France, and went to college in the US (for as of yet unspecified reasons); graduates and gets a job (unspecified) there. She sometimes visited her aunt and the Suohs during school vacations after her aunt marries Yuzuru. She doesn't live in Japan until she's preparing for the (eventually ruined) wedding for her arranged marriage.

Kakari (WB) -> Hook (Japanese); Probably something to do with having people "on the hook" (blackmail) or getting people "off the hook" (out of jail/charges dropped)

Kakari is not her legal name. It's a pseudonym so that people don't figure out who her family is. (Her legal name is "Latimer" which is an English surname for "translator (into Latin)" which was the best that I could find for what I wanted out of it.) Kakari was born in Japan to American Diplomats and raised there until sometime in middle school, where she was sent overseas to an American boarding school to finish out her school years. She eventually comes back to Japan and joins the Girl Gang™.

The Queen's Guard - Grace & Staff

The Queen’s Guard, affectionately given to the team behind Grace’s solo career, was a force of nature the likes the industry had never seen before. Even IU didn’t have this type of team behind her. From Bang Shi-hyuk, PDogg, a team of choreographers, and stylists, Sejin, a team of bodyguards and a whole of team dancers - they were a force that seemed to be unstoppable.

As one ARMY quoted when they saw Sejin, BTS’ manager for many years, back in the fold and leading the way in front of Grace at Incheon airport with a team of bodyguards around the two then what seemed to be another four managers including a woman - “It looked like the queen had arrived with her army. Like everyone parted way for the arrival of the queen and her team wasn’t going to stop anyone from getting in the way.”

Bang Shi-Hyuk

It was hard to get time to see Bang PD when his time was directed overseas or in meetings, dealing with HYBE and other business arrangements. However, when it came to his only female idol, he cleared his schedule for the whole week and flew back to Seoul immediately. The news about BTS's ‘hiatus,’ as the media was calling it, had been announced only a few days later and already he had phone calls from shareholders about the dip in value their stocks had taken.

However, he had no plans to deal with that. He had bigger fish to fry.

He scheduled a meeting for her the day after he flew in and what walked through the door wasn’t the Grace he had met all those years ago. This was a scared young woman who didn’t know what was coming, who didn’t know what the next three years were going to bring her. He patted her on the arm and showed her to his desk, taking the seat next to her instead of the ‘big boss’ chair.

“What do you want to do Hea?” he asked, referring to her Korean name.

“I don’t know. I want to do things differently compared to the boys and I don’t want anything I want to do to interfere with what they want to do. I’d rather wait till they all go to the military or all the days are announced so the boys can enjoy their solo careers.”

Ever thinking about her boys instead of herself.

“We can do that. We can assemble a team who you’re familiar with to start planning and guiding and I’ll be there every step of the way,” he promised and reached over to take her hand, giving it a squeeze.

They stayed silent for a moment. It had been thirteen years since they had first met when she was nineteen years old, straight out of education and looking for a job as a dancer but was hired for her vocals for background use and then as an assistant. Now look at her, one of the biggest bands the world has ever seen.

“Okay, I’m ready.”

Her first mixtape, Dangerous Woman, had been an absolute success thanks to the combined efforts of PDogg, Hitman Bang, Yoongi and Namjoon. Two of those people were now facing a career in the military and so now it was down to Hitman Bang and PDogg.

A meeting with what had become the Queen’s Guard, consisting of Hitman Bang, PDogg, other producers at BigHit, Sejin and a few others as well as Grace had taken place a week after Seokjin’s military announcement. A whole day had been dedicated to what Grace wanted her next mixtape to be but she soon surprised them all.

“The boys are doing albums, apart from Seokjin, so I want to do the same. But I want CD one to be the Dangerous Woman mixtape and CD two to be the new songs. All in English. And I want to do a tour with the album, and if it’s not enough, maybe release another mixtape with other songs to fill in the gap.”

Evidently, Hitman Bang hadn’t been expecting that as he sat there at the top of the table and stared at her with his jaw dropped.

“All in English? No Korean?” PDogg asked, making a couple of notes on his pad.

“All in English. I can do remixes of the songs in Korean for maybe a B-Side but I want this to focus on English. This album is all about me and my thoughts and my feelings and everything I see so it has to be English.”

“If you say you’ve got lyrics already, there are no promises I won’t kiss you Hea,” PDogg warned.

Grace simply grinned and lifted up a notebook, the same one she got from Jungkook for Mother’s Day, filled to the brim with lyrics. “Better bring those kisses.”

“Well, look’s like you’re going to be busy,” Sejin laughed at the sight of PDogg pressing many kisses to the top of Grace’s head before stealing the notebook.

When Sejin got the phone call from Hitman Bang, he was completely taken aback. He had been promoted to the artist protocol department and a manager for ENHYPEN. He had been with BTS from the very beginning and missed them very much, though he saw them every now and then. He never expected to be getting a call about them, especially from the boss.

“Grace is coming.”

Those three words were all that were given to him.

And he was immediately at HYBE.

“Grace is going ahead with her solo career and I believe she needs a manager who can focus solely on her and her needs. And given your history with her and the history with the boys, I think you’re the best one for the job. Plus she misses you.”

The reunion had been a long time coming and he first saw her again at a meeting with lawyers and executives. She didn’t care for decorum the moment she saw her favourite manager standing at the door, apologising for interrupting.

“Sejin-oppa,” she gasped and quickly ran over to him to give him a big hug.

“Are you coming back?” she quietly asked him and the squeeze she got in return was everything she needed.

The Queen’s Guard had their general back.

Other Staff

New stylists and make-up artists were brought on board for the sole focus on Grace. There were many meetings as the music was being produced as to what themes and colours Grace wanted to pick from, what costumes and clothes, and what would be more suited for her body rather than adapting the boy's costume to fit her.

When the contract for Alexander McQueen, Balmain and Louboutin had all been signed, her stylists threw a sleepover party at HYBE so they could go through all the choices of clothing and shoes the designers had sent Grace.

Her bodyguards were also from the same team that had been around the boys since day one. She had been signed one in particular, ARMY would later recognise him from Yoongi’s concerts as the one that was fancam’d the most. All bodyguards were older than her so there would be no rumours.

Choreographers were spearheaded by the usual team with the added addition of Sienna from In the Labs and Brian Puspos. They were instrumental in creating new choreography for her singles, reflecting more her style to suit her dancing history and body.

Moments with the staff

The airport had a bigger turnout than usual ever since it was announced that Grace would be departing to start her solo career by attending a fashion show in London, with her being the main ‘face’ of it. The amount of fans present was slightly alarming and even local police had been called in to control the public as well as the press.

The slight army of bodyguards hanging around the car was soon pointed out by local press who could be heard saying that this wasn’t normal for idols.

The moment Sejin appeared, ARMY screamed his name causing him to turn and look, giving them a slight bow.

Another manager got out of the car, an older lady this time, and she stood in front of the open door to speak to the bodyguards for a moment. The moment she stepped aside to let Grace out, the noise volume increased.

Sejin went to the front with one main bodyguard, the rest surrounding Grace and the lady who kept an arm wrapped around Grace’s waist, giving her a slight squeeze. But Grace bowed to everyone she saw, stopping briefly for photos before leaving towards the private lounge.

She had gone live while in London as they were prepping for the fashion show and ARMY went nuts when they saw Sejin come in with a mug of hot chocolate, a blanket and a hot water bottle. “That time of the month,” Grace had said with a sigh as she was tucked in.

ABSOLUTELY

so I'm specifically studying the developmental and psychosocial effects of growing up in an active duty military household :) (in the U.S specifically)

I personally grew up very surrounded by the military; my dad wasn't actually active duty, but he worked as a contractor to different churches on military bases all over the US to minister to military teenagers. from ages 2-17, my family lived in 5 different states and multiple different regions for my dad's job, so I very much grew up feeling more like a military child even though my family was technically civilian. my outlook on life and how I go about living life has definitely been affected by this, especially hearing my own friends (who do have active duty parent(s)) talk about their lives and experiences and how being military has affected them. my dad was also a psychologist; he has a bachelor's degree in family counseling, so often while he was ministering to these teenagers, he was also offering counseling to any kids who came to him for help, whether that was social, parental, or psychological. seeing him do that and how it changed the lives of some of these teenagers really left an impression on me and actually guided me towards this direction :)

so to answer my original prompt of how military children are important to the ecosystems of civilian schools: obviously my thesis is not necessarily about this specifically and I am also still working on it, so this might not be the most concise, but it is still an important part! military children are really healthy for civilian children, especially in civilian public schools, simply because it socializes them to a drastically different point of view. military children move 6-9 times within their K-12 education, which can offer a lot of unique viewpoints to civilian kids who may only move 1-2 times within the same span of time, and oftentimes that's only between households and usually doesn't involve a school move. this can leave those civilian children to live in a sort of box that they often don't leave, simply because they aren't given the opportunity to, so hearing about the lives of military children who may have lived all over the country, or even overseas, can be very eye opening! I know that even personally, when I talk about my life moving around, my civilian peers are often very engaged because they've never really experienced the things that I have, whether that be related to moving, or the direct contact with military itself

that diversity is important for teachers and staff too, as it teaches them how to be more equipped for more diverse students, and to teach to an audience with different backgrounds. the students arent the only ones who have to learn! on average, over 90% of the 1.3 million military children living in the U.S attend public schools outside of the military base, and yet teachers are never taught how to tend to the needs of these children, but the presence alone is enough to get it started! because in the last few years, Jill Biden has been working closely with the military Department of Defense and Department of Education to ensure that these schools are better equipped for handling military students and their complex backgrounds, as well as making sure that their credits are properly transferred during school moves. the presence of military children in schools is good because it keeps the schools moving! it keeps them diverse and capable of teaching to a wider array of backgrounds
