SWIFTIES!!
I am a high school teacher in New Zealand and I have been given permission to plan and teach a year long English course through the lense of Taylor Swift.
We will look at analysing her lyrics and her music videos, how they've developed across years and genres, the impact society has had on her music, and the impact her music has had on society. We will delve into the some of the more complex parts of her history (think Kanye and Scooter Braun) and do research into them and take a look at the flaws of the music industry through Taylor's experiences.
Pretty much, nothing is off the table. Anything is possible.
I'm coming to the internet to get ideas, thoughts (and maybe any resources) about things you would want to learn about and study if you were a high school student taking a Taylor Swift English course. What do you think is important to cover? What do you think could be fun activites to do? Are there any resources that you've stumbled on that you think could be handy? (If I use any of the resources you share, I will make sure to give full credit to the original creator)!
You're welcome to reply to this post or message me your ideas! I've also asked this on reddit so you can reply to me there if you'd prefer!!
Please also reblog so that this gets seen by as many people as possible and I can hear all of your wonderful ideas!! Thank you 🫶🏻🫶🏻

For high school teachers, especially!
Do you want to make a classroom playlist? Make a Google Forms, and have students type in 5 of their favorite songs. Review the songs to make sure they're appropriate, then add the songs to a playlist! The playlist is a combined playlist of all your students recommendations.

Richard James Rogers, Award-Winning Author and Teacher, describes ten which Social Emotional Learning (SEL) practices can be incorporated into High School Lessons.
A blog post by Richard James Rogers (Award-Winning Author of The Quick Guide to Classroom Management and The Power of Praise: Empowering Students Through Positive Feedback). This blog post has been beautifully illustrated by Pop Sutthiya Lertyongphati. As high school teachers, we know that our students need more than just academic knowledge to thrive. They need tools to manage their emotions,…

one of the most boring lessons I’ve learned is that when a task feels overwhelming, you just have to start doing it. Even if you’re not sure how to do 90% of it, look for one small component that seems close and start there. Sometimes it’s reading one article on the topic, or searching one related term, or literally just googling how to do the task. Do anything other than thinking about it. The process of working on a thing inherently makes it less scary.

What is your favorite English word?
Sometimes when teaching English, it is great to engage the students in exploring language purely. No I don't mean drilling them on grammar rules, they will mutiny and steer the ship to free talk in no time. I mean the words and the peculiarities that exist within the realm of the language.
I started doing an activity I called Think Fast, in which I would ask them a question and they would then have to say the first answer that come to their mind (no repeats, no thinking time). Completely wrong answers are okay too, the point is to see their comprehension capabilities. One of my favorite questions in that series was, "What is your favorite English Word?" Naturally I have asked this in other contexts as well. Here are a few of my favorite answers and some thoughts on them when appropriate;
I love you (hmm not a single word)
Gotcha
Sleep/holiday (same idea so I lumped them)
bargain
difficult
easy (they were in different classes, I swear)
Of course I often offer an answer but I never standardized but sometimes my answer are quite random such as;
onomatopoeia
luscious
modest
perpendicular
How about you? Do you have a favorite English word?
*note- I am Canadian and the actual spelling should be 'favourite' as British English dictates. However, I have been studying in an online American university so have taken to American spelling, apologies to my Canadian brethren.

You were in the middle of conversing with Luke during some RAD downtime when Mammon dragged his desk over and sat down like he owned the place. He had no interest whatsoever in your discussion on flower vases.
"Let's play cards!" he insisted. "I'm dyin' of boredom over here."
"Why don't you go bother someone your own size?" Luke retorted, but Mammon was already shuffling a rather worn deck he kept in his bag.
He looked like a professional dealer, mixing the cards so smoothly. 52 pieces blended together into a flowing bridge as he deftly tossed the deck from one hand to another.
"Whaddya wanna bet? Loser does everyone's homework? Or how's about you two gotta listen to whatever I tell ya?"
You rolled your eyes at the thought. "How come you're the winner? We haven't even started yet." Not to mention, you could command Mammon whenever you wanted. It wasn't an enticing prize.
Luke looked wary. "Gambling is against the school rules. You shouldn't do things knowing Barbatos will catch you."
"Ah, shut it. I'm on the student council, remember?" Mammon started dealing cards, tossing five your way and five to Luke. "I practically make the rules around here."
Mammon leaned back in his chair until the front legs were off the ground while you and Luke studied your cards. Mammon looked to have memorized his hand with a quick glance, while the angel alternated between intensely staring at his cards and Mammon.
"Luke, do you even know how to play poker?" you asked. The exact game hadn't been specified, but there was little question about what you were playing.
"Not really," he answered, "but I used to play a lot of Old Maid with Simeon when I was little."
Mammon snorted. "When you were little? What, like, this mornin'?"
Luke kicked at the airborne leg of Mammon's chair while the demon cackled at his own joke.

Music Practice with Dice | d20 Task Charts, Templates, Practice Games, and PDF
If you have some shiny math rocks and want to find more ways to use them, I made a few templates for scales practice or practice sessions. These task charts aren't a new concept, but hopefully these are some ideas to use more polyhedral dice in your teaching, compositions, or practice.
If you feel like tallying scores to fight a monster, there are three creatures I illustrated - the Gelatinous Rosin, the Decomposer (yes, it is a poor attempt at a wig on an earthworm), and the Memory Slip.

A cool way to pick seating charts
Get a deck of playing cards and have students pick a card. They will then sit by the other students who got a similar card. For instance, all spades together. All diamonds together.

actually one of the most beautiful things about hacks is that we can be changed by anyone and at any period in our lives. deborah was in her forties when ava was born. she’d lived a life longer than ava’s before ava even existed yet they both have had a profound effect upon each other. it’s never too late. you haven’t met all of the people who are going to change you yet.
