Ok so I have a question bout seams pronouns. Thought I’d ask this blog since you’re the first nb one I thought of. Sorry if this is a weird query. Anyway in-game Seam is referred to by no pronouns actually.. just name. But should I correct someone if they use pronouns in reference to Seam? Because in writing the only way to have gender-ambiguous character would be to use ‘he/she/they’ at all times when referring to said character or using the name or a title. (continues this ask)

Aw, I’m flattered you thought to go to me first! I admit I haven’t been as involved in Deltarune-centric discussions as some other blogs, but I’ve heard some talk about this topic.

@everyone-needs-a-hoopoe was one of the first people I saw noticing that Seam doesn’t use any pronouns in canon. As they point out in their post, when Seam is referred to in third person, no pronouns are used.

This post also discusses the Japanese version and points out that Seam uses a first-person pronoun (atashi / あたし (translation)) which has historically been associated with men and with women. While Toby is notorious for avoiding making concrete statements about his characters’ genders, taking this into account alongside the English version‘s avoidance of using any pronouns for Seam, I think that for the time being, it’s reasonable to assume that is an intentional choice on Toby’s part and could very well be taken as a sign of Seam being nonbinary. Especially when you consider that a lot of nonbinary people don’t use pronouns in English and other languages. (apologies for the wikipedia link, it’s the best I could find on short notice outside people’s personal blogs)

So to answer your question, while the only official source we currently have is chapter 1 of Deltarune, if you want to stay true to canon it would be nice to try to refer to Seam as has been shown so far (example on how to skip using pronouns for someone). Plus, it can act as a vector for practicing how to refer to real nonbinary people who don’t use pronouns, which I think is an excellent side-effect of popular content featuring diverse nonbinary characters! :)

As for correcting people… This is only my personal opinion on the subject, but I think that depends on you. I can’t tell you to go out and fight people over this, but I do see that you are doing rather well in asking a nonbinary person (albeit one who does use pronouns) about a nonbinary character and considering how you can show the most respect to nonbinary people. So while I can’t tell you what to do, I think we could always use more people like you with open minds and open ears, and if you want to you can feel free to direct any friends you have who are curious about this subject to relevant discussion, and help nonbinary voices reach them! ^^

Yeah but, it doesn’t sound wrong. In fact, “bad big wolf” sounds wrong, doesn’t it? I’m not a native speaker, but my guess would be that “bad wolf” is a phrase in and of itself, and so the “big” is added before it so as to not split up the phrase.

hmm, you of course have some very good points!

i wouldn't say Toriel commits "sensless violence". I think her whole "fight me or leave" thing was an attempt to scare Frisk away until she can destroy the door, which may have gotten out of hand. she does stop hurting them when they come close to dying, so I don't think she meant to seriously hurt them.

i have been thinking today about how exactly damage to Frisk manifests, and i had an interesting idea. do magical attacks really damage a human's body? we know physical attacks hurt monsters, as can be seen when Frisk kills them, but what about magical attacks?

well, we've seen how they affect monsters a couple of times. mad dummy gets hurt by their own magic attacks, but we don't see any damage on their body (though, they aren't fused to it yet, so I guess maybe not the best example). Toriel shoots fireballs at both Flowey and Asgore, and we don't see any physical damage on them.

another time we see someone attack a monster with magical attacks is when Flowey shatters Asgore's soul. but, he didn't attack Asgore's body!

so, what if magical attacks hurt the soul, and not the body? it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch, and as far as I know right now there isn't anything to disprove it? please correct me if I'm wrong.

if that is the case, i think it would change how the monsters see their battles with Frisk, and how much those battles hurt them. although, we do know monsters can see when Frisk is hurt, as both Toriel and Mettaton's battle demonstrates. still, how much of that damage is actual physical harm? or is it just 'soul damage'?

i'd love some info to disprove or confirm this, i'll look into it myself when I come home!

tbh there’s some… questions about undertale’s plot that i still need answered. like, i really wonder whether getting a game over represents death. it doesn’t feel like it’s within the m.o. of most monsters to want to kill you—and even those that do recognise Frisk as human and want to harm them for that, do so because the king is meant to have their SOUL. so why do they let Frisk’s SOUL shatter—especially Undyne?

relatedly—why doesn’t Frisk ever take Asgore’s or Toriel’s SOUL? by the time they face Asgore, Alphys has already said that a boss monster’s SOUL is needed to bypass the barrier. surely that should be a choice, at least, but both Asgore and Toriel have the same death animation that you do.

back on topic: Toriel fights Frisk in order to protect them. she’s visibly horrified if she does lethal damage, so what exactly happens between those moments to warrant that shift? a half-dead person isn’t any less distressing a sight than a corpse. (also, why does killing you so that Asgore wo’n’t kill you make any sense to her? what kind of caring mother so abuses the child who’s supposed to go home with her?)

is there a greater theme here?

in this game, it’s really easy to kill some one by accident. from half to zero in one turn. why?

I don't think we know enough about soul traits at all to come to any conclusions about them. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that every soul, regardless of colour, has its own trait, or that there are more colours than we've seen. Thing is, like with a lot of stuff, we just don't know. Maybe soul traits aren't even an important, in-universe thing, it could just be an idea that doesn't have much bearing outside characterizing the children a little, that's also a possibility.

I think that's red trait could rather be a neutral trait or a soul without a trait,after all, red's traits hosts use all of the other traits tactics to get the ball into the hole(which can be seen as metaphor of the goal's accomplishment) and "ball game"and "hole"are also written in red (while its can be because its an important thing or something but in the context of the "ball"game each colour corresponds to a trait)which suggests a some neutrality of this trait

I mean…I can’t really prove or disprove you there???? We really don’t know for certain how soul traits work, or even if they have any meaning in-universe.

I just…prefer to go with Occam’s Razor for theories. Theories that don’t require making up too many things from wholecloth, but are instead reasonable conjecture based on whatever is explicit or strongly implied by the text.

It’s simpler to assume that human souls stay the color they are their whole lives, since all of the fallen humans are strongly implied to be children.

“Hole“ and “Ball Game“ being separate lines of text, and associated with separate states of being for the ball-game hole, suggests they represent two separate soul traits or states of being, rather than representing the same trait.

I do think it’s likely that there are only seven soul colors, since each one corresponds roughly to Isaac Newton’s “seven colors of the rainbow“:

(with Newton’s “indigo” being labeled “blue,” and Newton’s “blue” being labeled “light blue”)

But it’s entirely possible that the “virtues“ just correspond to the specific souls of the fallen humans, rather than every human soul that ever bore that color.

I mean, it IS the best, likeliest assumption. But I find it weird that you point only to the Ball Game, which is specifically about the fallen children (blue associated with ballet dancing, purple with taking notes, green with delicious food, etc.)

(Also, how can there be seven traits if red is the lack of a trait? Isn’t that contradictory?)
