Review of the Conversion Rule for Roth IRAs
Not long after that, the legislation was revised, making the previously unavailable choice accessible again. That doesn't mean there's any certainty that you'll be able to transfer your old 401(k) into a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA), even if the law has made it feasible. Unfortunately, it is entirely dependent on the administrator of your plan. For instance, I had two customers in the recent past who were interested in converting their existing retirement plans into a Roth IRA. One of the clients had an old Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which is the military's version of the federal government's retirement program, while the other customer had an old state retirement plan. After assisting each of them in completing the necessary documentation, I made a finding that I found to be rather intriguing. On the papers for rolling over your TSP, there was a box that you could check if you wished to move the plan over into a Roth IRA (the instructions had been added to make sure you had a Roth IRA already established).
Review of the Conversion Rule for Roth IRAs
However, that particular choice was not available under the state's pension program. The only choice available was to establish a regular individual retirement account (IRA) in order to accept the rollover and then quickly switch it over to a Roth IRA. That indeed gave the impression of being a problem at the moment, and certainly, it was. Nevertheless, this particular state retirement plan is not the only one I've come across that has these supplementary "rules." The "No-Roth IRA Rollover" option is included with many 401(k) plans, and 403(b) accounts as well. Even though this choice was meant to become obligatory in 2010, some people continue to engage in it on a voluntary basis. This, at the end of the day, indicates that you should investigate this possibility carefully before blindly supposing that it will be successful in your circumstance. Before you start going in this way, make sure you have all of your questions answered, talk to your financial adviser, and thoroughly go through all of the rollover documentation you have.
Ally Invest is my go-to choice for an online broker, but you may also be interested in our rundown of the top locations for opening a Roth IRA and the maximum sign-up incentives offered by online stock brokers. There are many excellent choices available, but I have found that my experience with Ally Invest has been the most positive overall. Beginning an investing strategy is always the most crucial thing to do, regardless of whatever strategy you decide to pursue.
People have a tendency to instantly believe that they should convert their previous 401(k) into a regular individual retirement account. However, recently a lot of people have been inquiring about another alternative, which is whether or not you may roll over your 401(k) into a Roth IRA instead of doing it the traditional way. The good news is that the unequivocal response is "yes." You have the option of rolling over your current 401(k) into a Roth IRA as opposed to a standard IRA. If you decide to do that, there will only be a few more stages added to the procedure. When you quit your employment, you will be confronted with a choice about your 401(k) plan. The vast majority of individuals do not want to leave an old 401(k) account dormant with a former employer, mainly because they stand to gain a tremendous amount if they move that money to a location that would benefit them more in the long term. Let's see if I can assist you in making "cents" of the problem by looking at it from a financial perspective. But before we get into the method itself, let's take a look at the regulations that govern the process of rolling over your 401(k) into a Roth IRA.
To review, in most cases, you will need to have left your job in order to be eligible to roll over your 401(k) into a Roth IRA. On the other hand, some businesses do let their workers complete the rollover process while they are still working, which is referred to as an "in-service rollover." The Internal Revenue Service does not require employers to take part, despite the fact that it is legal. You were unable to convert your 401(k) directly into a Roth IRA prior to the first of the year 2008 when this option became available. To accomplish this goal, you were required to carry out a procedure consisting of two stages. (It is essential to keep in mind that this would also be applicable to older Simple IRAs, SEP IRAs, 403bs, 457s, and eligible pensions.)
Converting standard Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and other types of older retirement plans to Roth IRAs is now possible for almost everyone. The sum that you convert will be subject to taxation, but for individuals who believe that their tax burden will only continue to increase, this strategy may still be an appealing option.
If you get a distribution check from a 401(k) rollover to a Roth IRA, then there is a strong likelihood that they will withhold approximately 20 percent of the funds for taxes. Send that check back to your employer's 401(k) provider and ask to have all of your eligible retirement distribution sent directly to your new Rollover IRA account if you want to roll over your 401(k) directly into a Roth IRA. This is necessary if you're going to roll over your 401(k) directly into a Roth IRA (not as a check, or they will just give you 80 percent again).
If your business has a Roth 401(k) plan and you have the foresight to participate in it, the process of rolling over your retirement savings will be significantly more straightforward. It is not necessary to do a conversion when moving from one Roth product to another since there is no need for it. With the assistance of your plan sponsor, you may quickly transfer the funds from the Roth 401(k) to the Roth IRA.
Before you can accomplish any of this, you need to be sure you have a Roth IRA that is open and created.
In order to roll over your plan, you need to inquire with your plan provider about the necessary papers, and then you need to submit the paperwork in a timely way.
Benefit from the growth of your Roth IRA without having to pay taxes on it.
If you are considering converting your 401(k) to a Roth IRA instead of a standard IRA, there are several compelling arguments in your favor to make the switch. Traditional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and Roth Individual Retirement Accounts (Roth IRAs) both allow you to put your money into the same kinds of assets; however, Roth IRAs come with some added benefits that may end up saving you money in the long run. Here are four indications that a Roth IRA could genuinely be the best option for you at this point in time.
It is necessary for you to pay taxes on any cash that you transfer to a Roth Individual Retirement Account since the money in a Roth IRA has already been subject to tax. If you are subject to a higher tax rate when you reach retirement age, the tax-free payouts you'll get might be a massive help to you in that situation. Even if you don't pay taxes today, you will see them in the future. If you have a Roth IRA, you won't have to pay taxes on any money you remove from it. If you withdraw money from a Roth IRA, you won't owe taxes on it.
A Roth IRA is different from a standard IRA, which requires you to begin receiving withdrawals when you are 70.5 years old. As a result, your Roth IRA funds remain safe and secure until you're ready to use them.
If you now have a high income or anticipate having a high income in the future, you should think about rolling your savings into a Roth IRA rather than a regular IRA. A Roth IRA is a kind of individual retirement account. In 2016, the maximum annual income that qualifies an individual to make contributions to a Roth IRA ranges from $117,000 to $134,000 for those filing as individuals. Here you may learn more about the regulations of a Roth IRA as well as the contribution restrictions. The capacity to make contributions to a Roth IRA, on the other hand, starts to phase out for married taxpayers at $184,000 and comes to a total end at $194,000 for the year 2016. The more money you make in the future, the more difficult it will be for you to make contributions to a Roth IRA and still enjoy all of the tax advantages associated with having one.
Contributions to conventional Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) qualify for tax breaks, which means that you won't have to pay taxes on the money you invest until you start pulling it out of the account after you retire. On the other hand, contributions to Roth IRAs are subject to taxation at the time of deposit, but withdrawals made after reaching the age of 59 and 12 are entirely tax- free. If you are unclear about how your tax and income situation may develop in the future, it is a prudent decision to have both kinds of accounts – a regular IRA and a Roth IRA – in order to reduce the likelihood of being subjected to unexpectedly high levels of taxation in the future.
The choice to convert your 401(k) into a Roth IRA is a wise one for many investors, but it is possible that it is not the best option for everyone. Be careful to explore all of your choices thoroughly before making a final decision, and give some thought to having a conversation with a tax expert. What you don't know might end up costing you, especially when it comes to complicated investment vehicles and taxes.

who has the biggest base on empires smp? (as of july 1st, 2021)
a somewhat in-depth mathematical deep dive into empire smp’s bases
THE CONTEXT.
for the past two weeks or so, scott (also known as: scott smajor, smajor, smajor1995, dangthatsalongname, and branding nightmare) has been building up his second base, effectively taking down his starter house.
most of this building occured during his streams, where he often proclaimed that he thought he was building the “biggest base on the server.” when his third empires smp video came out on june 26, 2021, his titled said “The Biggest Base on the Server! - Minecraft Empires SMP - Ep.03.”
however, the day after, joel (aka smallishbeans) uploaded his fourth episode of empires smp, titled “Building My House! | Empires SMP | Ep.4 (1.17 Survival).” within this video, he claimed that he had the biggest house on the empires smp server. he even went as far as to trap an afk scott in a cage of stone, and writing out three signs asking scott to change the title of his recent video.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A zoomed in screenshot from Joel’s newest video. The screenshot was taken within Scott’s house. There are two walls shown and a birch floor. In the middle, there are three oak signs. Joel’s crosshair is on the middle sign.
The first sign says: “Hello Scott, please can you change your video title as”
The second sign says: “It says you have the biggest base. This is wrong. My base is bigger”
The third sign says: “Come have a look if you want. - Joel”]
so, that begs the question: who has the biggest base on the empires smp out of scott and joel?
THE SEMANTICS.
now, for the purposes of today’s adventure, we’re only going to be counting the volume within the base. this does not include windows, outside accents, bridges, gardens, walls, doorways, or anything else that is not within the confines of the base itself. floors and/or divides do not count towards the total, as they take up space and are not “easily moved.”
the only exception is balconies--the space on a balcony counts towards the total, though that space is counted differently. on enclosed balcony, i.e. a balcony that is surrounded by fences and has a roof-like structure that blocks out rain, all the space that fits between the fences, the roof, and the floor count.
on an open balcony, i.e. a balcony that only has fences and a floor, with no roof, only the two blocks of air on top of the floor and in between the fences count.
similarly, both of their bases are defined by their respective houses that they built during the episode. their farms, tents, bridges, and any other structure that they have built previous do not count towards the total.
i will be only using screenshots from their own videos, e.g., i will use scott’s video (published june 26, 2021) to find the volume of his base, and use joel’s video (published june 27, 2021) to find the volume of his base. anything that scott has added between his video and joel’s will not be counted, neither will anything that either of them created after the fact.
i will not be counting joel’s most recent video, titled “Pranking Lizzie, Interiors & Windmills! | Empires SMP | Ep.5 (1.17 Survival)”, because that was uploaded when i was writing this analysis. like, after i finished all my counting, but when i was writing this post. so, uh-
also, i am not counting anyone else’s bases within this experiment, though i do believe others have similarly sized bases. the other creators not a part of this post until they officially get involved in the ‘rivalry’
THE METHOD.
first of all, volume is calculated in minecraft blocks cubed. a typical ‘minecraft block’ is just a full block, like planks, logs, or stone. i’m not going to calculate this accurately (i.e. counting the space that the glass panes leave behind), mostly because i cannot be assed.
SMAJOR’S BASE.
the volume of smajor’s house, in theory, is relatively easy to find. because his house is just a right pentagonal prism, we can use the formula B*h to find the volume. B is the area of the ‘base’ (which, in this case, is the front/back of his house), and h is the depth of his house.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Two screenshots from Scott’s newest video. Both screenshots have lowered transparency, and are slightly dulled.
One screenshot is of the inside of his house, as he looks at the back. The floor is still grass, though the walls are up. There are dozens of arrows within the floor and towards the back of the wall. On top of the screenshot, someone has noted that there are 13 Minecraft blocks across the back of Scott’s house.
The second screenshot is from the outside of Scott’s house, as he looks up at it. The house appears to be finished. On top of the screenshot, someone has noted that there are 10 Minecraft blocks from the floor up to the start of the room. There is a red marking where the roof hits the wall.]
there are two parts that add up to B: the rectangular bit, and the roof. in these two screenshots, i’m finding the area of the rectangular bit.
the rectangular bit is 13 blocks across and 10 blocks wide.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A screenshot from Scott’s newest video, with lowered transparency and slightly dulled. It’s from Scott’s timelapse, taken up in the air. Scott isn’t finished building his house. One side of the roof is done, as well as all of the walls below and the two faces.
There are various notations on the screenshot. A blue marking on the bottom counts 10 Minecraft blocks up. A block above that, a red marking notes that the roof, at its widest point, is 15 Minecraft blocks wide. Another red marking notes the slope of the room. An arrow points towards the top of the roof, saying “later adds on 3 blocks here”
To the right, there is a header saying “TO-SCALE MODEL:” Below, there is a pixel model of the front and back of Scott’s house, which are the same. There is a blue rectangular section on the bottom. On top, there is a red roof. There are 3 purple pixels on the top. Markings on the model show the measurements. A dotted line goes through the model, splitting it up into two sections: a rectangle on the bottom, and the roof on top.
Inside the rectangular section, someone has noted down “11 * 13 = 143 mb^2″ the “143 mb^2″ boxed in. Inside the roof section, someone has noted down “111 mb^2″
Below the screenshot, someone has handwritten “143 + 111 = 254 mb^2″]
the second part is the roof. the roof goes outwards for two blocks, and then goes back inwards. using this reference for the roof, the previous two screenshots for the bit underneath, and cross referencing them to find out where they meet, i created a to-scale model of it!
i found the area of the to-scale model, and B = 254 mb^2
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A screenshot from Scott’s video, with lowered transparency and slightly dulled. The house isn’t finished--there’s only half of the side wall and the front detailing. The screenshot is taken from Scott’s timelapse, and is from the side of his base; only the side wall is visible.
Someone has marked over the screenshot with a lime green pen. On the top right, someone has written “* coutning the inner wall only”. An arrow is drawn upwards from one side of the side wall. It says “wall starts here”. On the other side of the wall, there is another arrow that says “wall ends here”. In between the two arrows, someone has made tick marks indicating where the blocks are. On the bottom, someone has noted down “3-wide doorway” by the side entrance. Off to the bottom ride, it says “24 px deep”]
next, i used this screenshot to find the h of scott’s base! this was a bit harder because scott doesn’t show the bottom of his base until he’s already detailed it, but with the precise use of my Big Brain (and my wacom tablet), i counted that it was 24 pixels deep.
so, B * h = V = 254 * 24 = 6096 mc^3
but we AREN’T DONE YET
Tumblr media
[Image Description: On the left, there are 3 screenshots from Scott’s newest video stacked vertically on top of each other. The first one is of the side doorway. Pink ticks mark the how many blocks wide and tall the doorway is. On the right of the first screenshot, there is a solid pixellated model of the doorway in the same pink. Inside the model, someone has written “18 mb^3″ in white. On the right of the model, someone has written “volume of the side door-way” in pink.
The next screenshot is taken from the inside of Scott’s base, showing the front doorway. Orange ticks mark how many blocks tall and wide the bottom section of the front doorway is. It is 8 blocks wide and 3 blocks tall. The bottom most screenshot is a picture from Scott’s timelapse, where half of the roof hasn’t been built yet. Someone has drawn lines on the building going horizontally, dividing the top section of the front doorway into three sections: one 3 block section on the bottom, and two 2 block sections on top. On the right of these two screenshots, there is a solid pixellated model of the front doorway, labelled accordingly, in orange. Inside the model, someone has written “39 mb^3″
Below the screenshots and the models, someone has written “6096 - 39 - 18 = Vi = 6039 mb^3]
see, scot also has two main doorways: one at the entrance and one on the right side. i used the first screenshot to find the volume of the side doorway, and the next two screenshots to find the volume of the front doorway.
(this is the part where i might be wrong--i couldn’t find a reliable reference for the the front doorway, so i had to use an extremely zoomed out version. the stripped spruce log section underneath the window is either 2 or 3 blocks tall. i assumed 3 based on the bottom most screenshot but like. i could be wrong)
anyway, the first doorway is 18 mb^3, and the second is 39 mc^3. so, the total final volume for scott’s base is 6039 mb^3.
JOEL’S BASE.
joel’s base, on the other hand, is genuinely fucking insane. like, seriously. what the fuck, joel. you couldn’t have made it harder for me to do my job (it does look amazing though and i love it so much)
so, instead of taking screenshots and calculating the volume of his base through those references, i decided to build a replica of joel’s base in my own creative world, and after fill it with sand. i could then count all the sand from his base and add it up to achieve a (somewhat accurate) volume for his base
Tumblr media
[Image Description: An array of screenshots of a replica of Joel’s base, laid out in a three by two grid. Each is labelled with a black, comic-style font. The first screenshot is taken from the front of the replica from up in the air, and is labelled “FRONT.” The second screenshot, which is to the right of the first screenshot, is taken from the right of the replica from up in the air, and is labelled “RIGHT SIDE.” The third screenshot is taken from the back of the replica from jup in the air, and is labelled “BACK.” The fourth screenshot is taken from the left of the replica up in the air, and is labelled “LEFT SIDE.” The fifth screenshot is taken from the front of the base, and the player is on the ground. It is labelled “FRONT (FROM THE GROUND).” The last screenshot is taken from the inside of the base, looking towards the back. It is labelled “INTERIOR (FROM THE GROUND).”]
anyway, most of his base is relatively easy to copy. my replica is pictured above. there are two time lapses within his video that show his process of building his base. the first timelapse (4:59-5:54) is shot from the front of his base, and angled slightly downwards, and is where i got most of my references from. the second timelapse (9:48-9:55) is shot from the diagonally back left of his base, and is what i referenced for the back of my replica.
the roofs themselves are symmetrical: barring the roofs’ intersection, the blue and red roofs are the same the entire way around. this is why, even though i technically didn’t see the back of joel’s base, i knew what it looked like and could get an accurate replica of it.
the only problem is that he never showcases the base from the left. this means that the red and blue roof intersection on the left could be very wrong. the only reference i got for this part was a screenshot at 6:12 (pictured below). this only showcases the inside of the roof, and from bad lighting, but it’s better than nothing.
other than that, though, i’m. pretty sure my replica is accurate!
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A screenshot taken from Joel’s video, from approximately 6:12 in the video. Joel is inside his base, staring up at the red roof from the bottom. The floor is lit up by torches, but the details of the roof are barely visible in the darkness.]
next, i filled his entire base with sand. this was the most tedious part--never have i ever placed so much goddamn sand in minecraft. do not recommend, 0/10
i made sure that i filled the entire base by going into spectator mode! (i can’t fit the pics in here because, well, image limit. but i promise the entire build is full)
and, after 2 diamond shovels, two stacks of torches, a handful of night vision potions, here is how much sand i have:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: Four screenshots, layed out in a two by two grid. The first three screenshots showcase the inside of three different double chests. They are all filled to the brim with stacks of sand. On the first screenshot, there are two notations, both in blue: one that notes out that there are 9 columns in a double chest, and another that notes that there are 6 rows in a double chest. The last screenshot is that of the interior of partially-full double chest, with 21 full stacks within it. Someone has noted down “21 stacks” in red.
Underneath the four screenshots, someone has written “number of stacks * 64 = Vt” in black. Beneath that, someone has written “there is 54 stacks in the full double chests” in blue. Beneath that, someone has written “( (54) (3) + 21) (64) = Vt,” in various colours. “(54)(3)” is in blue, while “21″ is in red. The rest is in black.
On the bottom, someone has written “Vt = 11,712 mb^3″]
the final total for joel’s base, as of july 1st, 2021, is 11,712 mb^3
THE CONCLUSION + TL;DR.
scott smajor’s title was not a lie, or at least not at the time. he had the biggest base on the server as of that upload. but soon after, joel created a base that was nearly two times scott’s, creating the bigger base out of the two of them.
so, yeah! joel has a bigger base than scott as of july 1st, 2021
this is because 11,712 mb^3 > 6039 mb^3
thank u and goodnight. send me any asks if u find anything wrong with this stupidly lost post, or if you want any progress pics! love y’all

Warnings: Fear, panic, and feelings of helplessness.
THIS IS THE THIRD STORY IN A TRILOGY. READ “A Third Perspective” AND “Switched Perspectives” FOR THIS TO MAKE SENSE!
(Check the reblog for the links to the previous chapters and the TWO prequels!)
———————————————————————————————
“Isn’t there some sort of borrower protocol to prevent this?” Roman asked, looking down at his borrower friends.
The borrowers glanced at each other before they both shook their heads. “No. If we’re found, that’s it. End of story. It’s just, before all of this, we’ve been… ‘lucky’ enough that the few humans that have found borrowers never revealed it to anyone else.” Virgil explained. Their kinds luck was really something. But it looked as if it had finally run out.
“But- it can’t possibly be just luck.” Roman insisted. “This is the twenty-first century, there are cameras everywhere. This cannot be the first time a borrower was caught on tape.”
The two borrowers blinked and looked at each other once again, a silent conversation happening. “You...do make a good point,” Patton admitted, suddenly confused.
“But borrowers have never been revealed, before now.” Virgil winced at that. “It...has to be some sort of luck or something, right?” Now Virgil was starting to doubt. But if not luck, what else could it be?
“Maybe it’s never become big news?” Roman offered. “Thomas, can you try and find any articles about borrowers?”
“I’m trying,” Thomas answered, already on it.
“Or perhaps borrowers have been revealed, but then disappeared and were taken for a myth,” Logan suggested. “Many folk tales are inhabited by tiny humanoid figures.”
Both borrowers were shocked at that. “Wait, there are?” Patton asked, eyebrows furrowed.
“Of course!” Roman nodded. “Fairies, brownies, gnomes, elves...well, the tiny elves anyways. They tend to change size.”
“It’s possible those mystical creatures are based off a rather un-mystical discovery.” Logan reasoned, pulling into the apartment complex.
Virgil hummed in thought. Could those myths be based on his kind? He could never be for sure but it wasn’t a very comforting thought. “So, what? You think this will blow over into some myth or something?” Virgil highly doubted that would happen in this case.
“Oh, no.” Logan’s bluntness instantly dashed all their hopes. “No, this is far more severe than a mere sighting or a bit of film. You have to remember this footage was already distributed to over a dozen scientifically-minded individuals, all with at least a master's degree under their belt, and the original video still belongs to a psychopath who wants to ruin our lives.”
“...great,” Roman said once he was able to stop gaping at Logan’s lack of tact. “Thanks for the rousing speech, Albert Ein-stink.” He hopped out of the car, rolling his eyes.
“What did I say?” Logan’s brow furrowed, hopping out as well.
The borrowers could only sit there in silence, leaning against each other as support. Everything was gonna change now. Borrowers would be caught and discovered...and it would be all their fault.
“What did you say?” Roman half-laughed, glad they were the only ones in the lobby as they began to make their way upstairs to the apartments. “You just crushed all their hopes and dreams in one fell blow! Thanks for ruining the mood, dr. gloom.”
“I was trying to be reasonable!” Logan argued, taking the stairs two at a time to get ahead and unlock the door.
“No, you were trying to be smart.” Roman sneered, walking past Logan and into the living room. “As usual.”
“Roman, don’t,” Patton said quietly. “Please, don’t fight. Not now.”
Virgil nodded. Their humans fighting was the last thing they needed.
Roman glanced down at the borrowers, feeling guilty all of a sudden. “...sorry.” He apologized, setting them down on the coffee table.
“Thank you,” Patton said, giving Roman a small smile. Virgil sighed, looking up to find Thomas as he entered the room.
“Have you found anything yet, Thomas?” Virgil asked, impatient and worried.
“No, nothing yet.” Thomas shook his head, still glued to his phone. “I think I’m gonna head downstairs, see if I get any more success on my laptop.”
“We’ll be here,” Roman said with a shrug, watching Thomas walk right back out the door.
Virgil watched Thomas leave and then sighed as he collapsed on the table and then laid down on his back. “...Our whole kind is screwed.”
Patton couldn’t help but agree with Virgil.
“Well, maybe there is something to that whole myth theory.” Roman hypothesized. “Maybe this will all blow over? Certainly, if nobody finds anything it’ll die out eventually, right?”
“Do you know of any borrowers in the immediate area?” Logan asked, closing the door and kneeling next to Roman.
“No,” Patton answered, seeing as how Virgil was still lying on the table. “Not that we know of. But, then again, we haven’t left this building in about two years. Or have checked the other buildings...there’s really no way for us to know.”
“Is there any way for us to check around?” Roman offered. “We could help you guys scout, maybe warn anybody else.”
“That’s a terrible idea,” Virgil spoke up before Patton could. Virgil sat up so he was sitting. “No one would listen or believe us if we showed up with a pair of humans. Besides, there’s no way we would be able to reach enough of them…”
“I suppose all we can do is hope that their borrower instincts protect them,” Logan admitted. “Though humans may be looking for them, the only true consequence is if they are caught. After all...according to the tape, only the existence of two borrowers can be proven.” Logan gazed thoughtfully down at said two borrowers.
“Unless they try and gas them out,” Virgil said, causing Patton to gasp. “Or tear down the walls to find them.” Virgil’s mind was working overtime at this point. “And if the government were to get involved, with all their technology and things? We’d be screwed for sure.”
“Okay, well, I seriously doubt the government is going to get involved with a simple pest problem.” Roman rolled his eyes. “But glad to know you think so highly of yourself.”
“Look, let’s think about this logically,” Logan advised. “Borrowers often take up residence in human houses, yes? Not places of business?”
“W-Well, usually but there are some instances where-” Patton started but Virgil cut him off, glaring at Roman.
“I’m sorry, did you just call us pests. What the hell, Roman?”
Roman’s eyes widened, quickly backpedaling. “No! I mean, well, I didn’t mean it like that, it’s just... oh come on, what else would you call it? You’re talking as though people are gonna call an exterminator.”
“And they might! But that doesn’t mean you say it like that!” Virgil huffed, calming down a little. “Humans are going to see us in so many different ways. Pests, pets, science experiments. Why wouldn’t the government get involved in the ‘find of the century’.”
“That’s just it, though.” Logan jumped in, stopping Roman from apologizing further. “Borrowers have to actually be found. While it is true that humans could go to drastic measures, the individuals who currently possess the footage do not have the authority to search through every household. They would need to gain permission from every individual homeowner, who would, in turn, have to pay the costs of said extraction methods. It’s highly unlikely that a person would be willing to put so many resources towards a chance discovery. It is equivalent to putting your life’s savings into lottery tickets: foolhardy and uncommon in real life.”
Virgil huffed, looking down. “I don’t doubt that humans will find ways. After all, it didn’t take much for the two of you to find us.”
Patton nodded slowly, agreeing with Virgil. “We’ve both seen humans do...a lot to get what they want.”
“That...does lead to my other realization,” Logan admitted. “The only way anyone of those individuals has a sure chance of discovering borrowers is to get their hands on one of you. It’s the only guaranteed source of information and the only way to determine the validity of the tape. At the very least Dee knows our identities, and I would not be surprised if our faces made an appearance in the tape itself.”
Patton felt himself pale. “You think there will be humans coming after us?” Patton asked, not liking the sound of that.
“Most definitely.” Logan nodded gravely.
“Well, what the heck are we supposed to do with that molotov cocktail?” Roman frowned, looking over at Logan quizzically for answers.
Virgil frowned, looking down and fidgeting with his poncho. “Maybe the two of us should...leave. Go off on our own, that way if they come looking here or with you guys, they won’t find us.”
Patton’s eyes widened. “B-But…” Patton started, trailing off.
“Indeed.” Logan sighed. “My thoughts exactly.”
“But you can’t just leave!” Roman’s eyes widened, looking down at his friends. He didn’t want them to leave so soon after meeting them.
“Me neither!” Patton cried. He ran over to be closer to Roman.
“I don’t either,” Virgil admitted, glancing over at Logan. The two of them had just become friends, after all. “But it might be the safest for us.”
“...we could all move.” Roman murmured, almost so quiet that Logan didn’t hear him.
“Roman, don’t be preposterous.” Logan chided.
“I’m not being preposterous!” Roman exclaimed. “Think about it- you can’t stay here anyways. You’ve managed to anger like every head of your department and they’ll all know of your involvement soon enough.”
“That doesn’t mean I should just leave town,” Logan argued.
“If they have to move, we should move.” Roman insisted. “It’s only fair.”
“Yeah! And then we can all be together still!” Patton exclaimed. Virgil bit his lip, looking at Logan.
“Isn’t moving kind of...expensive for humans?” Virgil asked. Not quite knowing how it worked but knowing it did involve money.
“It...can be,” Logan admitted. “Although cost isn’t necessarily a deciding factor here.”
“We can certainly find creative ways to make ends meet.” Roman smiled, clearly indicating his acting talents. “When there’s a will, there’s a way.”
“But would moving cities really work?” Virgil asked, still worried about all this. He did want to stay with his friends but he also feared getting caught by other humans as well.
“It would certainly lower our chance of random encounters, and I doubt many individuals would be so dedicated as to stalk us in the next town over…” Logan began to seriously mull over the possibility.
“Oh my goodness, we could get a house together!” Roman gasped, eyes beginning to sparkle with excitement.
Patton gasped as well. “That would be awesome!” That means they would all be able to hang out together, all the time!
Virgil bit his lip. “...I really do want this to work. I don’t want to leave you guys either.” Virgil said this, mostly directed at Logan.
Logan met Virgil’s gaze, feeling his heart swell slightly.
“I suppose we’re moving then,” Logan said with a slight smile.
“Yes!” Roman pumped the air victoriously with his fist. “Can we get a garden? And a wraparound porch? And one of those porch swings, you know?”
“We’re going for practicality here, Roman.” Logan reminded him gently.
“Yay! This is gonna be great!” Patton exclaimed, right along with Roman. Virgil smiled softly.
“We’re gonna be okay?” Virgil said it in a way that it was almost hard to hear that is was actually a question.
“We’re gonna be okay.” Roman nodded.
“Now, if this is going to work, we will need to get started on preparations right away.” Logan clasped his hands together.
“Is there anything we can do to help?” Patton asked.
“You two should begin packing all of your belongings,” Logan explained. “If there is anything particularly heavy or cumbersome you wish to bring, Roman and I can prepare a box.”
Virgil nodded. “Sounds good. Pat? Wanna get started on that?” Virgil personally didn’t have a lot of stuff he was gonna take but he knew Patton would probably need that box.
Patton nodded. “Yep! Let’s go!” Patton looked at the humans expectantly.
Roman put his hand down, eager to give his friend a ride.
“Roman, you should begin packing as well,” Logan instructed.
“I got it, don’t worry.” Roman waved him off.
Patton climbed onto Roman’s hand with a smile while Virgil instead went closer to Logan. His home was here, in Logan’s apartment, after all. It wouldn’t do well for him to go with Roman and Patton.
“Be back later!” Roman smiled, departing with Patton to go home.
“Care for a ride as well?” Logan raised an eyebrow, offering a hand as Virgil got closer.
“That’d be great,” Virgil said, stepping on. As he settled down, he let out a small chuckle. “Kind of funny all this happened after we made up, huh?”
“Indeed.” Logan agreed as he stood up, walking Virgil back towards the hall. “It seems there’s never going to be a dull moment when the two of us are together.”
“Yeah.” Virgil agreed. Though hopefully, the moments would be more fun once they got away from all this stuff.
“I’ll get to work on house hunting,” Logan said, setting his hand down in the still open hole that was Virgil’s room. “Hopefully by tomorrow morning, I’ll have made some progress.”
“See you tomorrow then,” Virgil said as he hopped down into his home.
Logan nodded in acknowledgment before heading to his bedroom. There was a lot of work to be done.

“Thank you all for coming in on such short notice.” Emile Picani said, gazing out on a sea of familiar faces. Every recipient of the email sat before him. Dee sat in the back, a proud smirk almost permanently plastered to his face. Picani frowned at him. “Now, before we begin, has anyone forwarded the email?”
“Only to my son.” One man answered, gesturing to the teen sat behind him.
“‘Sup.” Remy waved a hand in greeting.
“Yes, I am aware of Remy’s involvement.” Picani sighed.
“I don’t understand why I’m here.” Remy pointed out. “You already reported my video or whatever.”
“I did not report your video.” Picani shook his head.
“Fine, someone did.” Remy rolled his eyes, going back to his phone. “I get it, whatever, someone’s pissed that I keep trying to put it on the internet.”
“In the future, perhaps it would be best not to share faculty emails with your children.” Picani’s tone was tired, clearly strained from this whole scenario. “Now, has anyone else shared the email?” There was a chorus of head shaking and Picani breathed a sigh of relief. “Good.”
“Was that video...real?” Remy asked, engaging again briefly.
“...well…” Picani seemed a bit unsure for a moment as many eyes looked back at him expectantly.
“Oh yes,” Dee answered for him, eyes turning to the back of the room. Dee gave them a grin. “That’s why I acquired your assistance in the first place, boy.”
“Wait a moment.” The man from earlier turned around, frowning at Remy. “You’re involved in all this?”
“Well….” Remy pushed his sunglasses further up his face, curling in on himself and looking as though he wanted the chair to swallow him whole. “You see dad-”
Before Remy could blubber his way through an explanation, the door at the front of the room opened and two individuals in suits stepped inside.
“Oh good, we’re right on time.” The one in the beanie said, grinning.
“I’m sorry, this is a private meeting,” Picani explained, furrowing his brows. “Who exactly are you?”
“The name’s Joan, Special Victims Unit Officer.” Joan smiled, shaking Picani’s outstretched hand enthusiastically. “Heard you guys had a run-in with some borrowers!”
“Ah, well, yes, but-” Picani’s eyes widened as a few more suit-clad individuals walked in. The shorter individual with colorful hair that had arrived with Joan was now right in front of him, holding what looked to be a bright white light attached to a rod.
“Alright, sleepy time.” The Agent explained. With a flash of light, Picani blinked, wondering why he was here only briefly before his eyelids fluttered closed.
“Woah, I gotcha.” Joan caught Picani, laying him on the floor. Across the room other agents were doing the same, Remy only putting up a brief fight as his sunglasses had to be removed for the process to work.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Dee hissed, standing up so fast that his chair was flung backwards. Instantly two broad-shouldered Agents restrained him on either side.
“Oh, just your run of the mill memory wipe.” Joan sauntered over to Dee, their partner following. “So, you must be Dee.”
“What, you think you can pick on borrowers just because they’re tiny?” The short individual got up in Dee’s face, looking pissed.
“Easy there, Talyn.” Joan put their arm out to halt Talyn before turning back to Dee. “Heard you’ve been causing a lot of trouble out here. Didn’t anyone tell you the borrower rules? It’s an awfully big secret to keep. But not only did you fail to keep it, you’ve also violated a whole slew of ethics laws as well.”
“I demand to know what’s going on!” Dee roared.
“You’re coming with us because you were a jerk to tinies.” Talyn deadpanned. “Put him in the paddywagon, boys.” The buff Agents gave a nod, dragging a screaming Dee out the door. Talyn noticed that along the way Dee seemed to have dropped his phone. They picked it up, scrolling through the files.
“Alright, got it.” They confirmed, deleting the file. Looking around the room, other agents had just finished doing the same on the other faculty’s devices.
“Man, what a mess.” Joan groaned. “Why can’t people just mind their own business and leave tiny peeps alone?”
“I mean, we would be out of a job.” Talyn shrugged.
“That’s true.” Joan stretched their arms above their head. “Alright, almost done. Ready to go to the source?”
“Yup.” Talyn nodded, already pulling up the address on their phone as the two headed out to their car.

New Perspectives on Back Pain: Does the Thoracolumbar Fascia (TLF) Hold the Key to Healing?
If you've ever before had a hurting low back, you're acutely aware of how agonizing it could be. Though we commonly indicate tight muscle mass or disc issues as the source of discomfort, new understandings into the fascia are transforming just how we believe about back pain. This is excellent news for the 20-30% people dealing with low back discomfort at any type of provided time.
Low neck and back pain influences over 80% of people in their life time. It is the 5th leading root cause of physician brows through in the United States, and among the leading causes of chronic pain as well as disability. In most cases the origin of pain in the back remains a mystery.
New study recommends that there might be one more dimension to low back pain that was not formerly recognized. Specifically, emphasis is looking to the function of thoraculumbar fascia (TLF), which could play a crucial role in the experience of persistent back pain.
The fascia, additionally described as connective tissue, has formerly been considered the inert 'wrapping' product of the body. Significantly, researchers are recognizing its role in a large array of body functions, in certain structural health and also balance.
" Fascia is the biological fabric that holds us together," claims Tom Myers, writer of Anatomy Trains, a publication that discovers the fascia lines of the body. "You have to do with 70 trillion cells all humming in relative harmony, fascia is the 3-D crawler internet of coarse, gluey, and also wet healthy proteins that hold them completely in their appropriate placement."
Fascia borders most frameworks of the body consisting of nerves, blood vessels, muscle fibers, and also muscle mass, as well as it develops a facility, interconnected internet throughout the body.
Much like a coat, a "pull" in one area of fascia fiber can radiate to other areas of the body. This has much reaching effects for how we consider reduced back pain.
The Thoracolumbar Fascia and also Reduced Back Pain
As scientists are uncovering much more and more about the duty fascia has to play in bodily features, among the locations of focus is the duty of the thoracolumbar fascia in back pain.
The thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) is a specific kind of fascia referred to as an aponeurosis. An aponeurosis is a broad sheet of thick fibrous connective tissue that covers and also creates the endpoints as well as add-ons of numerous muscles. You could consider it as a level sheet of tendons merged together.
Low neck and back pain is simpler to comprehend when you consider it in regards to the thoracolumbar fascia. Commonly pain in the reduced back really feels as though it comes from the muscular tissues of the low back, yet lot of times frameworks like the hamstrings, piriformis, as well as gluteus (butts) muscle mass, or joints like the sacroiliac (SI) joint are likewise involved. Back pain could often emit from the reduced back to the top back and shoulders. These are all frameworks that are connected by the TLF.
Tumblr media
In truth, most of the major muscular tissues of the back, trunk, and also legs intersect with the TLF. On the back, it links the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, rhomboid major, and also quadratus lumborum muscles, along with the spine erectors as well as multifidi. For the trunk, it links the external obliques to the back, and it forms the accessory point for the gluteus maximus as well as the hamstrings. The thick fibers of fascia likewise attach to lots of crucial bony frameworks of the back as well as back, including the thoracic spinous processes, the sacrum, ribs, as well as hips (iliac crest).
Given this level of interconnectedness, it's not tough to see that discrepancies partly of the muscular tissues affixed to the TLF often are connected as sheer anxiety to the TLF. This is substantiated by brand-new research study, which finds that the TLF contains numerous nocioreceptors, making it a with the ability of sending out pain signals to the brain. Partly II of this article we will assess a new research that locates that the TLF is a lot more sensitive to discomfort compared to muscle mass and also other connective tissues (tendons and also tendons).
The Thoracolumbar Fascia in Movement
The TLF is main to activities like strolling, resting and standing. When weight is moved from one leg to another, the mechanical tons of the body are transferred from the reduced back, pelvis and hips across the TLF to the upper back, arms as well as shoulders. The force transfers diagonally in an x-axis throughout the facility of the TLF at the reduced back.
This suggests that the TLF is in charge of taking care of a significant quantity of weight and force through the reduced back. This is also takes place when you're turning your spine. If you're climbing a hillside or a trip of staircases, or bring any kind of weight on your back or shoulders, this pressure is multiplied considerably.
Why haven't we been considering reduced back pain in regards to the TLF till currently? Off, up till just recently, fascia has actually only been viewed as inert covering product. On top of that, unlike muscle mass and bones, the TLF is not easily seen with present imaging techniques like ex-rays and also MRIs (magnetic vibration imaging). That means that although doctors could see the TLF in an image, they could not see it clearly enough to identify a problem.
Preventing Low Back Pain
Understanding exactly how your back works could be a great initial step in protecting against low pain in the back. Bear in mind just how you relocate, and also consider your stance when moving or raising hefty things. In addition to mindful movement there are a variety of other actions to consider.
Get rid of excess weight - When you consider the biomechanics of activity it ends up being clear that the much more you consider, the higher pressure you position on your low back, spinal column, hips, and TLF, every one of which are implicated in low back pain.
Watch your posture - Be mindful of how you sit, stand and also removal. The alignment of your back as well as hips can have a great bargain to do with the force that your reduced back takes in, and the pressure that is put on it.
Get up and move - Believe it or not, resting places 4 times the quantity of mechanical pressure and tension on your back compared to standing. Your reduced back is the recipient of a great deal of this tension. Stand, stroll about, and also obtain into a routine of moving.
Strengthen your spine - Whether via gentle yoga or much more energetic workout and strengthening programs, make sure to pay interest to your spine and your stomach muscles. Core reinforcing exercises found in yoga as well as Pilates could be ideal.

Neutrinos weighed by the world's most precise scale The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment KATRIN starts -- Official inauguration colloquium on June 11 -- Germany's Federal Minister of Research: An experiment of superlatives' KARLSRUHER INSTITUT FÜR TECHNOLOGIE (KIT) The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment KATRIN now starts to weigh the mass of neutrinos. Following the electrostatic spectrometer and the detector unit, the tritium source was installed as the last of the large components of KATRIN. The ambitious and highly motivated team of physicists, engineers, and technicians is well-trained and looks forward to the challenges in determining the neutrino mass. Germany's Federal Minister of Research Anja Karliczek says: "KATRIN is an experiment of superlatives and will complement the knowledge about our universe by a decisive piece of the puzzle. I congratulate the KIT and the research collaboration on the successful assembly of this complex experiment. Together with you, I look forward to the start of the measurement phase and the first research results. Such an important experiment on German territory strengthens Germany as a location of research." With a share of around 75%, the Federal Ministry of Research was the biggest funding partner by far. It invested about 50 million euros in the building of KATRIN. "Large-scale research facilities promote technological development and provide an inspiring work environment for researchers and students at KIT, the Research University in the Helmholtz Association," concludes Professor Holger Hanselka, President of Karlsruhe Insitute of Technology. "With KATRIN, an international research community has found its home at KIT, and it will be interesting to see which fascinating insights into the universe will be opened up by this creative interdisciplinary team." "Neutrinos have adopted the role of much-noticed superstars in the zoo of known elementary particles, and their impact on our modern view of the macro- and microcosm dwarfs that of other particles" outlines Guido Drexlin, Professor of KIT and Scientific Co-spokesperson of KATRIN. Also cosmologists pay a great deal of attention to the unique role of the large number of relic neutrinos as "ghost particles of the universe" in shaping the large-scale structures in our cosmos. Their exact role as cosmic architects depends on their rest mass, which is unknown at present. "It is only in the last two decades that we know neutrinos to possess a finite rest mass - in sharp contrast to long-held expectations of particle theorists. This breakthrough is due to professors Arthur B. McDonald (Queens University, Canada) and Takaaki Kajita (Tokyo University, Japan) and their international teams," Guido Drexlin continues. They were the first to obtain irrefutable evidence of neutrino flavor transitions, which earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2015. Today, the non-zero rest mass of neutrinos remains the sole indication of novel physics beyond the Standard Model to have been verified in the laboratory. The discoveries of McDonald and Kajita show that neutrinos have mass, but do not tell us how much. KATRIN will make use of different physics principles and experimental methods to perform a model-independent measurement of the neutrino mass. The two Nobel laureates, who are in close contact with KATRIN, will attend the Inauguration Colloquium, as will many other international colleagues. "KATRIN is an international flagship mission, and we are very keen to learn about its first results," stated both laureates prior to the milestone event, where high-purity molecular tritium gas will be injected for the first time into the KATRIN source as ß-emitter. Later, about 100 billion ß-decay processes of molecular tritium per second will release an electron and a neutrino each, which share among them the 18.6 keV decay energy in a statistical process. In extremely rare cases, the neutrino turns up almost "empty-handed," while the electron obtains nearly the entire energy. Einstein´s famous formula E=mc² tells us that the invisible neutrino has to carry away at least its rest mass, which the electron then lacks. It is this minute amount of missing energy in the electron energy spectrum that the KATRIN neutrino scale hunts for, down to a level of 0.2 eV (corresponding to the inconceivably small mass of 3.6 x 10-37 kg), which is an order of magnitude more sensitive than previous experiments. This called for an unprecedented tritium source strength, scaled up by a factor of 100, and much improved spectroscopy properties. "KATRIN is a true technological marvel," raves Ernst Otten, emeritus professor of Mainz University, one of the founding fathers of KATRIN, who headed the former Mainz neutrino mass experiment. During the commissioning phase, the KATRIN team successfully tested many technological novelties and reached several world records. "An incredible success story is our ultra-precise high-voltage system and the 700 m² wire-based electrode system for the very large spectrometer," says Christian Weinheimer, Professor of the University of Münster, who also is Scientific Co-spokesperson of KATRIN. He and his team have developed and built several important key com-ponents and, thus, contributed significantly to the success of the project. Several novel technologies developed for KATRIN now are used in other experiments as well and are applied by other disciplines. The international KATRIN team recently succeeded in mastering a final challenge: The very stringent requirements on the stability of the source parameters were improved by one order of magnitude. The tritium source of KATRIN is housed inside a 16 m long highly complex cryostat that is located - as are all other source components - in the Karlsruhe Tritium Laboratory (TLK). TLK offers a unique tritium infrastructure and expertise worldwide, which is the reason why KATRIN is located at KIT. Electrons in huge numbers from the source are guided by strong superconducting magnets to the very large electrostatic spectrometer, the heart of KATRIN. In 2006, this enormous vessel was shipped in a spectacular sea-going voyage from the manufacturer in Upper Bavaria to KIT via the Danube river, the Mediterranean and the North Seas, and the river Rhine. For many years now, the spectrometer has held the record of being the world´s largest ultra-high vacuum vessel with a final pressure as low as on the lunar surface. A system of active and passive pumping systems ensures that no tritium molecule advances to the extreme vacuum of the spectrometer. After several years of planning, construction, and commissioning of the major components of the 70 m long setup, the nearly 200 members of the international KATRIN Collaboration from 20 institutions in 7 countries now look forward to the imminent start of the measurements in June 2018. "I am very proud of our enthusiastic team with its great commitment and its broad expertise," emphasizes Drexlin, who also coordinated the assembly of KATRIN at KIT as a project head. "My cordial thanks go to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Helmholtz Association which supported and financed the setup of KATRIN over a period of many years." "The unique properties of source and spectrometer are of major importance for the complex KATRIN data analysis", emphasizes Dr. Kathrin Valerius, who leads a Helmholtz Young Investigator Group at KIT. Together with her young female colleagues, professors Susanne Mertens from the Max Planck Institute for Physics and the Technical University of Munich and Diana Parno from Carnegie Mellon University, USA, she leads and coordinates the work of the international analysis team. "The first weeks of data taking under nominal conditions will be most challenging and exciting, as we enter uncharted experimental terrain," the three young analysis specialists agree. Their international team consists of postdoctoral and PhD researchers as well as master's and bachelor's students. The ambitious and highly motivated team is well-trained and looks forward to the challenges in determining the neutrino mass. With the official Inauguration Colloquium on June 11, the KATRIN team has realized a long-standing dream. "Only with determination, enthusiasm, and a good dose of boldness can a pioneering project, such as KATRIN, be implemented," Hamish Robertson, Professor of the University of Washington in Seattle, USA, and long-term US Spokesperson of KATRIN, summarizes the long way from the first ideas in 2001 up to today. As inventor of the gaseous molecular tritium source in use at KATRIN and coordinator of the important US activities for KATRIN, he can look back on several decades of milestones in neutrino research. The two co-spokespersons explain: "Our path has been full of challenges. Now, we are at the start of data taking and look forward to exciting KATRIN results, as was good tradition in experimental neutrino physics over the past decades." They and the entire team expect the future measurements which will last well into the next decade to produce high-impact results. Being „The Research University in the Helmholtz-Association", KIT creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is the objective to make significant contributions to the global challenges in the fields of energy, mobility and information. For this, about 9,300 employees cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in natural sciences, engineering sciences, economics, and the humanities and social sciences. KIT prepares its 25,500 students for responsible tasks in society, industry, and science by offering research-based study programs. Innovation efforts at KIT build a bridge between important scientific findings and their application for the benefit of society, economic prosperity, and the preservation of our natural basis of life.

The existence from the looking equipment and looking materials is definitely established incidentally on how you keep it. The better you might be getting good treatment of the searching equipment, the more decades It's going to previous. Among the the simplest but finest matters that can be accomplished needs to be to often thoroughly clean your looking equipment after getting utilized them. You don't know how to make may what tools You will need. We are a speed prior to deciding to opt to, and considered you must inventory on these searching materials, to generate particular that cleaning searching equipment turns into rather very simple to meet your necessities!
™
1.A rifle cleansing fishing rod- A rifle cleaning fishing rod is Amongst the most important searching cleaning utility caddy that you choose to could have. The fishing rod is important as it could quite possibly get in towards the tiny holes with the rifle and correct it out. It's going to choose out residue or leftover gunpowder and prevent anything from getting stuck inside.
youtube
two.A cleanse rag- simple point like a clean up rag will be able to do miracles for your looking equipment. It could wipe away muck, bloodstream stream, oil or residue. It could polish your guns triggering them to get seem like new yet again. As you are going to uncover rags that allegedly are better for guns, we are telling not discriminate in opposition to your outdated t-t t t shirts or rags relaxing concerning the household. You'll have a chance to unquestionably start applying this stuff to scrub your hunting provides, as extended considering the fact that they're clean up Plainly!
3.Gun oil- gun oil is the one other important cleaning much too just about every hunter will require. You'll put the gun oil in regards on the fly fishing rod or potentially within your rag, and enable polish and glow your gun. In addition, it could escape sticky residue, or gunpowder less complicated.
For those who have the correct resources, cleansing hunting gear will not be a significant trouble. So, make certain to inventory on these products and solutions and develop them out next a day's hunting!
Hunters are deciding on crossbows for searching in excess of ever before. Partly because of crossbows now being a lawful means of hunting in many states, and partly simply because using a crossbow for looking is currently getting extra socially acceptable. Should you be previously a bowhunter, not Substantially will modify in your hunting strategies after you acquire for the woods having a crossbow. If you are a gun hunter that's aiming to shell out additional time within the woods, and have now selected a crossbow for searching, you might or might not have to regulate your searching strategies. Let us Examine some of areas of searching having a crossbow you gun hunters should want to consider in advance of heading towards the woods using a crossbow for the first time.
First thing very first. You at the moment are bow hunting. Bowhunting is about getting near. Ignore deer drives and standing at the sting of the discipline using your shotgun. Although it continues to be properly fantastic to hunt from the bottom when hunting with a crossbow, you now must get closer for your prey than you at any time could have been prior to. Ground blinds certainly are a massively well-liked method of bowhunting, especially using a crossbow. They may be perfect for concealing a hunters movement and many offer you a good amount of home for a crossbow. Treestands are in all probability the preferred solution to bow hunt. If you are an capable entire body hunter with no panic of heights, searching from a treestand might have quite a few benefits compared to sitting down on the ground. Treestands give an improved vantage place allowing for a crossbow hunter to observe game at more distances. By currently being elevated, they help hide human scent and also have the hunter from the road of sight from eager eyes. Just one important variable to indicate is always that arrows shot from the crossbow at an elevated position might not strike a similar position as they do when shot from the crossbow at ground degree at exactly the same distances. As being a rule they Generally Really don't. Usually they can strike a pair inches bigger. So I strongly advise training from an elevated place right before heading towards the deer woods for the first time along with your crossbow.
Your shot length even though crossbow searching are going to be shorter of that by using a gun. Although lots of todays crossbows are able to some rather astounding groups at for a longer period yardages, usually They can be obtained although shooting your crossbow from a bench. The arrow from a crossbow won't shoot just like the bullet from the gun. It would not choose A great deal to change the route of the crossbow arrow. Unseen branches or limbs can deflect a crossbow arrow to the point of really missing a deer totally, as well as even worse, wounding a person. Try and only just take pictures which have open up paths involving you and the animal. Cutting taking pictures lanes right before time is sweet follow. Your utmost distance to shoot should be a private selection. Understand that deer are moving targets. Because it is possible to shoot the "X" from a bullseye at sixty yards together with your crossbow within your yard doesn't suggest that ought to be your max yardage when looking that has a crossbow in the field. The farther the shot, the higher the margin for mistake. I stated it the moment ahead of and I'll say it all over again. Bowhunting is about getting close!!!
Shot placement is the following thing to look at when earning the change to crossbows for searching. No extra aiming with the shoulder or using that neck shot. Most times you can only get one shot when searching with a crossbow, so make it count. When searching with arrows and broadheads, animals die from hemorrhage not shock. Which means a effectively put arrow is essential. You'll want to set the sights of one's crossbow guiding the shoulder while in the critical organs. A broadside shot or a bit quartering away shot is good.
Crossbows are commonly loud. Not as loud like a shotgun or rifle, but loud when compared with most compound bows. Hope your deer to "leap the string" which in fact signifies that they are ducking the string. So listen into the demeanor with the deer. Could it be serene and comfortable or can it be alert and attentive? Whether it is comfortable, then aiming mid way up the body to slightly below midway is nice. Whether it is alert and has produced you out, aiming within the decrease third of the human body, or at the center will provide you with some further home In the event the deer does duck the string. A effectively positioned crossbow arrow will dispatch a deer in the issue of seconds. Which delivers us to the subsequent subject with the beginner crossbow hunter. What to look for after the shot and just how long in the event you wait around ahead of monitoring.
Hopefully once you shoot your crossbow you may also be capable of Stick to the arrow right until it hits the animal. The first thing you ought to do is pay attention to wherever your arrow strike. Did the shot glance good? Which means was it driving the shoulder and during the vitals? Did the shot sense great? Have been you capable to adhere to through with the shot, or did you pick your head approximately attempt to "peak"? What did the deer do after the shot. Did it operate off gracefully or did it appear wounded? Listen up!!! Did you hear the deer slide around? Or could you hear it operate until it had been out of earshot. Every one of these elements will probably be indicators of when you ought to start out monitoring. The final general guideline is to wait no less than a fifty percent hour right before tracking on a well positioned shot. Obviously if the thing is DeerProject the deer drop around, you can check out it right away. If you're not positive where you strike it, or you realize it was a marginal shot, give it time. How much time genuinely will depend on your routine. The more time the greater. Most instances, deer shot with a marginal strike will likely not run pretty considerably if not pushed. Go get breakfast or lunch, or even wait until eventually another morning If https://ask.fm/deerproject24291 you're able to. Despite minimal to no blood, often periods you'll be able to Get well deer in this example just by offering them plenty of the perfect time to expire. Nonetheless, all much too usually the nervous hunter starts tracking marginally hit deer way too early only leap them from their bed. Doing this typically ends in the wounded deer functioning to another county leaving the crossbow hunter empty handed. Figuring out when and when not to trace deer originates from experience. With any luck ,, In case you are gun hunter changing to crossbows for looking you may already have some knowledge under your belt. Otherwise, It'll be part of the procedure when Discovering to crossbow hunt.
The paragraphs higher than provides you with a superb head commence when using a crossbow for hunting The 1st time. It could be almost impossible to protect the entire areas which make searching with a crossbow unique than searching that has a gun. Some belongings you can only find out from working experience with your crossbow and spending time hunting with it from the woods. Sometimes what is effective for just one hunter may not utilize to a different. In the end, only you should be able to make a decision yourself what performs the most effective in your case. Ideally I have provided you a head start off on What to anticipate when deer looking which has a crossbow and what may very well be unique when compared to searching deer using a gun.

Angels In Disguise: Angelfishes Hybridize More Than Any Other Coral Reef Fishes

Almost half of all marine angelfishes surveyed so far hybridize frequently, both with close relatives and with distant relations, highlighting the question: what is a species?

I’ve always been intrigued by what a variety of animals tell us about species concepts. Most contemporary biologists and students of biology are familiar with the statement that “species are groups of actually or potentially interbreeding natural populations, which are reproductively isolated from other such groups” — a proposal that is commonly known as the “biological species definition” or the “biological species concept” (i.e.; ref). But if you read a recent study about two species of crows that are genetically identical except for a tiny region of their DNA that controls plumage color — a single trait that makes them look different enough that they refuse to breeding with each other (more here) — you may be pondering what exactly is a species.
Hybridization — the production of living offspring by two different parental species — also informs our ideas about species concepts. We know, for example, that hybridization is most frequently seen between closely related species that have not had sufficient time to fully speciate; that have very similar behaviors or a large ecological overlap; or are rare at the edges of their ranges. Hybridization is particularly common in coral reefs that are home to animals and plants that evolved in one geographic region and are now in contact with those that originated in another geographic region. These ‘hotbeds of hybridization’ are biogeographically important areas known as ‘hybrid zones’ or ‘biogeographic suture zones’.
Most studies of hybridization have been conducted in coral reefs because they are crowded and species-rich marine metropolises that allow for no real spatial separation between their many diverse citizens. For example, hybrids have been identified for more than 173 species of coral reef fishes (ref). And yet, despite all this hybridizing, coral reefs remain one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth (ref). This raises a fundamental question: why do some coral reef fishes hybridize, whilst others don’t?

Investigating one hybrid fish’s ancestry inspired a survey of its entire family
“This project started as a small case study trying to identify the ancestry of one particular hybrid (between Paracentropyge venusta and P. multifasciata — the one used as a case study in our paper), but it eventually grew into a survey of the whole family”, said the lead author of the study, ichthyologist Yi-Kai Tea, a PhD Candidate who is studying marine fishes at the University of Sydney’s School of Life and Environmental Sciences.

The marine angelfishes, Pomacanthidae, contain seven genera and about 86 species. These brightly colored fishes are roughly the size and shape of a person’s hand and are common on shallow tropical coral reefs throughout the Atlantic, Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Marine angelfishes, which are “one of the most charismatic and iconic groups of coral reef fishes” according to Mr Tea, are familiar to many people because quite a few species are popular subjects in both public and private marine aquaria.
“[O]ver the last decade or so (before I started my PhD) I’ve worked in the marine fish industry as a writer, editor, and photographer, and over the years have amassed thousands of fish photographs”, Mr Tea said in email.
“This project was a really great opportunity to re-examine my existing photographs, and compare them to ones taken by my colleagues who have extensive experience doing underwater field surveys.”
These photographs featured wild fishes as well as those living in aquaria.
“Many of these include hybrids of angelfishes that are rarely seen”, Mr Tea added in email.
Mr Tea and his co-authors, Professors Nathan Lo and Simon Ho, and Dr Joseph DiBattista from the Australian Museum, Jean-Paul Hobbs from the University of Queensland, and Federico Vitelli from Edith Cowan University, began their survey by identifying 87 species of angelfishes as being valid species.
Mr Tea and his collaborators then identified hybrid angelfishes from photographs by their intermediate colors and patterns between two formally recognized species (Figure 2), an approach that has been validated in previous studies of other species (i. e.; ref).

This approach has been adopted by several authors in the context of the Pomacanthidae and has been demonstrated to be a sound approach in several other coral reef taxa. Using this simple methodology, Mr Tea and his collaborators report that at least 42 species — nearly half of all known species of marine angelfishes — create hybrids. Even amongst coral reef fishes, this tendency for hybridization is exceptionally high.
“This is among the highest incidences of hybridisation in coral reef fishes”, Mr Tea remarked.
How reliable is visual identification of hybrid angelfishes?
Because Mr Tea was identifying hybrids from photographs amassed over the years, it was impossible to travel back in space and time to get a small sample from them for genetic studies to validate this method. However, Mr Tea did have access to several individual Paracentropyge hybrids (Figure 1, also Figure 3, upper right panel) that he could get samples from so he could genetically test whether visual identification of hybrid angelfishes is a valid approach.
The genus Paracentropyge contains three species distributed across the Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean: the purple mask angelfish, Pa. venusta, whose range is restricted to shallow coral reefs in southern Japan, extending south to Taiwan and to the northern Philippines; the multibarred angelfish, Pa. multifasciata, which is distributed throughout shallow coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean; and the recently discovered peppermint angelfish, Pa. boylei, a small elusive fish that is restricted to very deep reefs in the French Polynesian Islands.

doi:10.1098/rspb.2020.1459
Previous studies of marine angelfishes suggested that the multibarred and the purple mask angelfishes are genetically well separated into distinct species (ref).
Mr Tea and his collaborators genetically tested the reliability and reproducibility of visually identifying hybrid angelfishes by conducting an analysis on a combination of mitochondrial and nuclear markers from two naturally occurring hybrids (denoted by a pale blue star following their scientific names in Figure 4) between the purple mask angelfish, Pa. venusta, and the multibarred angelfish, Pa. multifasciata, that he and his collaborators had previously identified based their intermediate color and distinct patterning.

(b) Phylogenetic relationships and median-joining haplotype network among species of Paracentropyge based on mitochondrial COI. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. Numbers at nodes indicate posterior probabilities and likelihood bootstrap support. Haplotypes of hybrids are indicated in light blue. Median-joining haplotype networks are also presented for (c) RAG2, (d) S7 and (e) TMO-4C4. Each circle represents a haplotype and its size is proportional to its total frequency. Unless specifically stated, black crossbars represent a single nucleotide change. In the haplotype networks for RAG2, two haplotypes are presented for the single hybrid examined, corresponding to alleles inherited from each parent. Sites that displayed ambiguous bases in the sequence of one or more non-hybrid individuals were removed from alignments prior to network construction, and a single haplotype consensus sequence per individual was used. Each network is, therefore, an underestimation of the true haplotype diversity at each nuclear locus for the parent species. Photographs of angelfishes from top to bottom by: H. Senou, Y.-K.T., J. T. How can marine angelfishes hybridize so often?
As a result of this survey, Mr Tea and his collaborators report that marine angelfishes are one of the most prolifically hybridizing families of fishes on coral reefs. Nevertheless, they were surprised to find hybrids between species separated by more than 10 million years of evolutionary time, and with as much as a 12% pairwise distance between their mitochondrial DNAs. Pairwise distance is a measurement of differences in pairs of DNA sequences.
“This genetic separation is quite astounding, considering that hybrids are rarely reported between species that share more than 2 percent in genetic distance”, Mr Tea observed. “Though coral reef fish hybrids are common; they are usually formed by closely-related species.”
Mr Tea and his collaborators also found that even when the parental species look quite different, hybridization occurs on coral reefs, often due to a combination of factors, including external fertilization and the marine environment itself.
“Marine angelfishes, like many coral reef species, are broadcast spawners that fertilize their eggs externally”, Mr Tea elaborated in email. “Given that physical barriers of isolation are fewer in a watery realm, and with so many species living together on reefs, the chances of accidental fertilization even between species that do not normally come together intentionally is higher than, say, in terrestrial species.”
Tumblr media
Figure 5. A harem of female (dominant male out of frame) Lamarck’s black-striped angelfish … [+] (Genicanthus lamarck) in the Philippines. Several genera of pomacanthid angelfishes are haremic, where multiple females are tended to by a single male. In sympatric, haremic species, mixed-species aggregations are not uncommon on adjacent reefs, which may lead to higher incidences of accidental fertilization during synchronous spawning events. (Credit: L.A. Rocha / doi:10.1098/rspb.2020.1459)
L.A. Rocha
Another intriguing possibility is that some life history traits may enhance hybridization. For example, living in harems, which is a fairly common life history trait of the Pomacanthid family, could also enhance hybridization. We know that many species in the Pomacanthid family are protogynous hermaphrodites, where each individual in a harem is capable of changing its sex, although this transition is typically suppressed by the presence of a dominant male, thereby maintaining a female biased sex ratio in the harem.
Further, many species in the Pomacanthid family — including some Pomacanthus species — live in mixed-species aggregations on the same coral reef. Thus, synchronous spawning in these mixed-species harems could provide increased opportunities for hybridization through accidental fertilization, disassortative mating (choosing a mate that looks different) and sneak spawning.
With so much hybridization occurring, will marine angelfishes eventually merge into just a few species?
“Simply put, the answer is no — at least, not really”, Mr Tea replied in email.
Studies indicate that most hybrids in marine angelfishes occur between distantly related species so they are less likely to be fertile and thus, they end up as ‘evolutionary dead-ends’.
“This means that they are unable to breed with their parents, or among themselves, and so species erosion is prevented”, Mr Tea explained in email. “However, this isn’t always the case. In some areas of the world, for example, the Christmas Islands, where closely related sister species abut in distribution, we often see way more hybrids than pure blooded parents. In situations such as these, there is a continuum of parents and their hybrids.”
Genetic mixing between species is known as ‘introgression’, and it is common in specific regions of the world known as ‘hybrid zones’. But introgression is often localized to these areas, and so does not affect the species as a whole in other parts of their distributions.
What do angelfishes reveal about the Biological Species Concept?
“There are several proposed species concepts. Dozens. The one most people are familiar with is the biological species concept, which states that species are a group of organisms that can successfully interbreed and produce fertile offspring”, said ichthyologist Luiz Rocha, Associate Curator and Follett Chair of Ichthyology at the California Academy of Sciences as well as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz and San Francisco State University. Professor Rocha, who was not involved in this study, is an expert in speciation in coral reef fishes.
“If we follow this concept, several angelfish species are not valid”, Professor Rocha pointed out in email. “However, in practice, very few people follow this concept, and angelfish species (even the ones that hybridize and leave fertile offspring) do fit several other species concepts, like the ecological, evolutionary, and taxonomic concepts.”
Tumblr media
Most marine angelfishes are restrict to shallow coral reefs, seldom venturing deeper than 50 m (160 … [+] ft). However, the recently described peppermint angelfish (Paracentropyge boylei) is an exception. It inhabits tropical reefs in the eastern-central Pacific around the Cook Islands and Rarotonga and has been recorded at depths between 53 and 120 m.
Yi-Kai Tea
Has the rate of hybridization increased recently, or has our ability to detect hybrids improved recently?
“Absolutely the latter”, Professor Rocha replied in email. “Now with underwater photography, the internet, and genetics, our ability to detect them greatly increased. Especially in groups as charismatic as angelfishes.”
“With molecular techniques advancing so quickly, we are now able to detect and confirm hybrids better than ever”, Mr Tea agreed in email.
Mr Tea recognized that not all hybrids can be easily detected by simply looking at them.
“Although most hybrids show intermediate coloration between their parents, thus allowing easy visual identification, this is not always the case. Some hybrids are masked by having coloration that lean more towards one parent over the other — this is especially common in hybrids between very closely related species, where repeated back-crossing and interbreeding can give rise to a myriad of offspring with intermediate colors.”
Cryptic species hybrids are even more difficult to identify visually.
“It is also important to remember that there are many other fish groups that are not as colorful, and so visual identification would be of little use”, Mr Tea pointed out in email. “In those instances, we are still able to detect hybrid ancestry using DNA techniques.”
The study that launched a thousand questions
Why do some fishes hybridize, whilst others don’t? What genetic and ecological thresholds limit and permit hybridization? This large-scale survey provides a critical launchpad for tackling these and other key questions concerning hybridization in coral reef fishes — the largest group of vertebrate species in the marine environment.
“Given the weak barriers of separation in marine systems, we expect hybridization to occur more widely between closely related species”, Mr Tea said in email. But he noted that, curiously, “some species have very little separating them in terms of genetic distance and ecological overlap, yet we absolutely never find hybrids between them.”
Is this a stochastic process?
“We simply don’t know”, Mr Tea replied in email. “We still do not know why some species just never seem to form hybrids. The regal angelfish for example — Pygoplites diacanthus — is found throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans, yet has never been reported to hybridize. It is the only genus in the family not reported to form hybrids.”

“There is still so little we know about the secrets of our coral reefs”, Mr Tea concluded in email. “Although we characterize and show that hybridization is a common process, we still don’t really know much about it. Over the years we have shown that genetic distance and relatedness is key to permitting hybridization, but recent studies have shown that species separated by tens of millions of years can still come together and form viable offspring.”
“This phenomenon is still largely poorly known and we are only beginning to chip away at it.”
Twitter is for the fishes, too
“This was an opportunity that kind of grew out of nothing really, and it has been great fun”, Mr Tea said with his characteristic enthusiasm. “In fact, Luiz [Rocha] and I often compete with each other (to the amusement of science twitter) to see who has the best angelfishes photos!”
Twitter is a great tool to follow the musings of the close-knit scientific fish community and to brighten your day with lots of gorgeous photographs of colorful — or just plain weird — fishes.
“I highly encourage readers to follow along — there are heaps of incredible fish photographs floating around twitter, and it’s always great when ideas spark into collaborative studies! Luiz and I are on twitter as @coralreeffish and @fishguykai, respectively.”

Sara C. Owczarczak-Garstecka et al., Exploration of Perceptions of Dog Bites among YouTubeTM Viewers and Attributions of Blame, 31 Anthrozoös 537 (2018)
Abstract
Dog bites are a human public health and dog welfare problem. this qualitative study is the first to use YoutubeTM to examine how viewers perceive risk of, and attribute blame for, dog bites. Comments underneath 10 videos, chosen to represent a diversity of dog-bite scenarios, were analyzed inductively using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged: 1) Commentators thought that dogs are inherently good-natured but wild animals and emphasized how dogs try to avoid biting people; 2) all recognized breeds of dogs were stereotyped and breed stereotypes were used to shift the blame away from the dog and onto a bite victim, unless the dog identified in a video was a pit bull type. the dog was often blamed in such case; 3) It was argued that a breed limits the extent to which a dog can be trained and controlled; 4) Owners/handlers were often blamed for bites due to their inability to control the dog, and commentators identified the need for appropriate training and socialization in order to control dogs and reduce bite risk; 5) Bite victims were also blamed for the bites when their behavior was perceived as provoking a dog. although children’s behavior was identified as causing a risk, parents of children bitten in the videos were blamed for bites instead due to their approach to child supervision; 6) Bites in a range of contexts, such as play or when viewers thought that the victim’s behavior provoked a dog, were seen as well-deserved and normal. It was concluded that although comments on publicly available videos need to be interpreted with caution due to a self-selection bias, their analysis can help to identify attitudes and perceptions towards risk around dogs that could aid bite prevention interventions and policies.
Dogs are a common presence in many societies; for example, 1 in 4 households in the UK own a pet dog (Murray et al., 2010). however, every day in England and Wales at least 20 people are hospitalized due to dog bites (Winter, 2015). Dog bites are a global public health problem (Coppinger & Feinstein, 2015). aside from the cost to the victim in terms of the physical injuries and emotional distress, dog bites incur an economic burden on: the National health Service (Mannion & Graham, 2016); businesses whose employees are bitten at work (Langley, 2012); courts that hold hearings regarding dog bites; and the police, as seized dogs are kept in police kennels (Jones, 2015). moreover, dog bites have a negative impact on the welfare of dogs. a bite can lead to changes in the way a dog is managed, and dogs that bite are more likely to be relinquished to a dog shelter (Kass, New, Scarlett, & Salman, 2001) or euthanized (BVA, 2016) than dogs that do not bite.
Most studies into dog bites are conducted within an epidemiological framework that strives to understand their broad patterns: where and when bites take place and what the characteristics of the victims and the dogs are (Overall & love, 2001). however, in terms of the prevention of dog bites occurring in the first place, perhaps of more importance are the ways in which people perceive the risk of dog bites; for example, how their understanding of dog and human behavior and their environmental influences shape the way they identify and manage this perceived risk. this has received less attention, but the perception of risk of dog bites is important to explore as personal attitudes and perceptions are associated with subsequent behaviors (Ajzen, 1991), which could include behaviors around dogs. therefore, greater knowledge of societal and individual attitudes regarding dog bites may help to inform how best to prevent them.
The cultural theory of risk and blame proposed by Mary Douglas and her collaborators informs our study. Douglas (1992) proposed that there are numerous hazards and dangers, but public attention tends to focus on just a few. the patterns of identifying risk and attributing blame are not universal—concerns over danger, risk, and safety are instead informed by the political context, social structures, the media, and moral norms valued within a given society (Douglas, 1992). For instance, in a society where the environment is seen as fragile, nuclear energy may be seen as a risk, whereas in a society where the environment is perceived as robust and capable of re-generating itself, nuclear energy may be perceived primarily as a resource (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). therefore, identification of risk always reflects what a society or a group perceives to be at stake (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). Consequently, the process of risk identification contributes to defining what is acceptable, valuable, and normal (Rescher, 1982). these norms are also reinforced by regulating risks and identifying those who can be blamed for them (Rescher, 1982).
A range of factors shape how people understand and predict dog behavior (e.g., Tami & Gallagher, 2009; Wan, Bolger, & Champagne, 2012). Breed familiarity can reduce the perceived risk an individual dog of that breed presents. For example, a lack of experience with bull breeds is linked to being more likely to describe these dogs as aggressive (Clarke, Cooper, & Mills, 2013). moreover, when the same dog is described as a terrier, people expect it to be more aggressive than when it is classed as a toy breed (Clarke, Mills, & Cooper, 2016), which indicates that people stereotype the risk associated with certain types of dogs and not just particular breeds. Different representations of German Shepherds in photographs and text can also change how individuals assess the risk posed by these dogs (Wells, Morrison, & hepper, 2012). Breed label alone can influence how dogs are perceived—dogs labelled as pit bulls are rated as more dangerous, less friendly, and less likely to be rehomed by prospective adopters than lookalike dogs presented without a breed label (Gunter, Barber, & Wynne, 2016). this suggests that peoples’ perceptions of breeds/dog types are affected by their prior knowledge and experiences with dogs and the dog’s visual characteristics.
Studies suggest that people perceive and understand dog bites and severity of a bite in different ways, making it difficult to identify universally applicable prevention strategies. For example, a study of women bitten by dogs found that there was not a single definition of a bite (Westgarth & Watkins, 2015). moreover, in an ethnographic study, practicing vets were found to often re-construct minor bites as “just nips,” and in some cases deny being bitten even when a bite was observed (Sanders, 1994, p. 52). Victims can rationalize bites as “just one of those things,” something expected when interacting with dogs, reflecting a degree of acceptance and apathy regarding dog bites (Westgarth & Watkins, 2015, p. 486). Further- more, dog owners and dog professionals alike often rationalize aggressive behaviors of dogs and, depending on the context in which it was shown and an owner’s relationship with a dog, can see it as justified (Orritt, Gross, & hogue, 2015).
Risk and blame have to be understood together, as defining blame is a part of a process of justifying why something poses a risk (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). Previous research indi- cates that bite victims rarely blame the dog—they blame themselves or the owner instead (Westgarth & Watkins, 2015). tracing how blame is attributed helps to provide insight into bite perception, as to ascribe blame it is necessary to define a causal relationship between different actors—a process by which a harms B (Douglas, 1992).
The aim of this study was to further explore how individuals interpret and give meaning to why they thought dog bites happen, by using YoutubeTM videos of bites and the comments left under them. YoutubeTM is a video sharing platform that has previously been used to explore users’ perceptions of dog behavior (Burn, 2011; Preston, Shihab, & Volk, 2013) and to study human–dog interactions (Payne, Bennett, & mcGreevy, 2016; Salgirli Demirbas et al., 2016). YoutubeTM offers a unique opportunity to observe actual bites, and although not all YoutubeTM users comment on videos, it presents a chance to study diverse perceptions and interactions that the video provokes. Our analysis was guided by two research questions:
What are the perceptions of risk in YoutubeTM users’ comments?
How, if at all, do YoutubeTM viewers attribute blame for the bites?
Here we analyze comments under YoutubeTM videos of dog bites to explore what viewers identify as risks during human–dog interaction and how they assign blame for a bite. We discuss our findings with reference to the cultural-symbolic theory of risk and blame.
Methods
YoutubeTM videos of dog bites were identified using search terms: “dog bite,” “dog attack,” “dog bites baby,” “dog bites man,” “dog bites woman,” “dog bites child,” “dog attacks man,” “dog attacks woman,” “dog attacks child,” and “kid gets bitten.” this search retrieved over 14 million videos, therefore to manage these data, only the first 10 pages corresponding to each of these search terms were watched. the videos were then checked to ensure they depicted a dog bite to a human (defined here as dog holding a person’s body part in the mouth and applying visible pressure, reflected in e.g., the person’s vocalizations or facial expressions indicative of pain). One hundred and forty-three videos met these criteria, and 10 videos were then chosen for analysis using purposive sampling to reflect a diversity of bite contexts, victim demographics, variety of dog breeds/types, range of bite severities, and different popularity on YoutubeTM (for a summary of the videos, see table 1). For nine videos, all comments were analyzed; the 10th video had substantially more comments than others so a random 20 pages per year since it was first listed on YoutubeTM were analyzed. all comments were included in the transcripts, including the “trolling” or “hating” comments, which often did not relate to the video. trolling/hating comments are spiteful comments usually left to provoke other users (McCosker, 2014). they were included in the analysis as they provided a context for the interpretation of other comments by highlighting content which provokes particularly emotive responses and areas over which users may disagree. Comments were ordered chronologically and comments posted until march 2016 were included. the earliest video was posted in march 2008 and the latest in January 2016.
Thematic analysis was deemed to be the most suitable method of data analysis as through the process of systematic data coding the key themes around users’ interpretations of videos and perceptions of risk and blame can be identified and summarized (Braun & Clarke, 2014). this type of analysis encourages a flexible approach to defining codes and developing themes (Braun & Clarke, 2014), which we thought was advantageous, given that little theoretical work has been done on working with YoutubeTM data.
Analysis was conducted using NVivo software (Castleberry, 2014). to identify key themes within the comments, a third of all comments across all videos were first coded with latent codes; that is, codes that relate to underlying ideas and patterns, line by line. the codes were reviewed, compared, and summarized, and a conceptual coding framework was developed. this framework was applied to all of the data in a recursive manner, reviewing and modifying the framework during the coding process. the prevalent ideas were finally summarized under common themes (Ryan & Bernard, 2003), which we defined as relating to the research questions and capturing an important pattern within the data rather than expressing simple frequency of occurrence (Braun & Clarke, 2014).

Table 1. Summary of YouTubeTM videos of dog bites analyzed (comments count and thumbs up/ down noted in March 2016).
Ethical Statement
All videos were in the public domain and were used in accordance with YoutubeTM regulations. therefore, ethical approval from the University Ethics Committee was not required for this project. Prior to the analysis, user names and other elements that could facilitate individual user identification were removed from the document. to protect anonymity of users who would not be able to give consent to be a part of this study, instead of providing links to the videos, the content of the videos is summarized in table 1.
Results
Six key themes that illustrate viewers’ perceptions were identified: “the nature of a dog,” “controlling dogs,” “breed determinism,” “bad owners/bad parents,” “blaming the victim,” and “normalizing bites.” the themes are presented in table 2 and discussed below. Risk identification and blame attribution are considered jointly as they were connected in viewers’ comments and often used to justify one another. Unless otherwise specified, the themes were recognized in comments under all videos.
The Nature of a Dog
It was clear from the comments that viewers acknowledged that dogs were a source of risk but rarely blamed them for the bite. most viewers believed that dogs are inherently good- natured. For example, dogs were often described as “amazing and caring,” “loyal,” “clever,” “loving,” and “pure.” adult dogs were often referred to as “puppies” and viewers argued that dogs are noble and deserve respect. What it is to be a dog is dichotomized into two parts: when explaining a bite, viewers pointed out that dogs are also “just animals,” “descendants of wolves,” “driven by instincts” and argued that the wild side of dogs, which is out of their control and distinct from their positive nature, is a reason for bites. however, in conflict with this perception, most viewers simultaneously did not see a bite as a behavior that a dog wants to perform. they referred to a dog’s body language (e.g., being still or tense, not wagging the tail, tuning away from the person) to argue that dogs do whatever they can to avoid biting. there was a mostly positive view of dogs and the conflicting perceptions that dogs both lack agency over their biting behavior and do have control and try not to do it. these perceptions were the basis for deflecting blame for the bite away from the dog. a previous study noted a similar bias in interpreting dog agency: participants identified dogs as in control of their behavior when initiating play but not when biting a person. an analogical bias in agency intention attribution was not observed for human subjects in the same context (Rasmussen & Rajecki, 1995).

Table 2. Summary of the coding framework.
Controlling Dogs
Some viewers argued that through appropriate training and socialization the wild side of dogs could be brought under control. training and socialization were therefore seen as a crucial part of dogs’ enculturation into human life; that is, a process by which dogs learn the requirements of living within human culture and behaving in a way that is congruent with its norms. training and socialization were perceived as social practices that give dogs agency and control over their behavior, if done correctly. however, viewers disagreed over what are the appropriate training and socialization methods and saw some approaches, in particular where a dog was treated like a person or a toy, as inappropriate. One viewer commented:
Retards who get chihuahuas always treat them like toys instead of living animals, so they always end up acting vile since they’ve never been taught how to behave. (Video no. 4)
Moreover, the effects of training were thought to be reversible and training was often discussed as something that needs constant work. For instance, one user said: “it’s an animal, left untrained it will become a wild animal” (video no. 5), and another user added:
you need to train that rat over and over again and the moment it slips you need to get back at it or they turn nasty. (Video no. 4)
Safety of dogs was therefore seen as only temporary (as long as they were well trained) and control over them was understood as a dynamic process, a practice that requires constant work to be maintained.
Breed Determinism
All breeds or types of dogs that viewers recognized were stereotyped. For instance, some viewers thought that Chihuahuas were aggressive because breeding for a diminutive size compromised the dog’s temperament. however, most of the time the stereotypes were used to shift the blame away from a dog and to attribute it to the victim or owner who was thought to be at fault for not knowing about the breed predispositions. For instance, one viewer said:
(...) what idiot walks in front of an agitated German Shepherd. that’s like grab- bing an electric fence, you don’t (...) do it. (Video no. 7)
Viewers’ reliance on breed stereotypes could lead to a greater acceptance of dangerous behavior in some dogs. this is problematic as a delay in behavior intervention often means a poor prognosis for a behavior improvement (mills, Dube, & Zulch, 2012).
Blaming dogs for a bite was rare and only occurred when the viewers thought that the dogs involved were Pit bulls or Pit bull types. these sentiments were particularly visible under a video with two large bull-breed type dogs; however, references to this portrayal of pit bulls featured in comments under all videos. For these viewers breed was a limit to how much they thought a dog can be controlled through training, and their behavior was often discussed as inflexible, pre-determined by their genetics and history of being bred for fighting. For example, one viewer commented:
Pit Bulls—all of them—are notoriously vicious and hateful. I’m real tired of the owner/breed theory. they attack people until they are mauled, and are proud of what they’ve accomplished ... (Video no. 1)
Some viewers argued against these stereotypes by sharing stories of owning or interacting with a Pit bull that was “a big softy” and “would never hurt a fly” even when provoked. historically, within the Western media Pit bulls have been described as hyper-aggressive, vicious, and demonic more often than other breeds (Cohen & Richardson, 2002; McCarthy, 2016).
Bad Owners, Bad Parents
Even though the viewers generally recognized the dogs as the source of the bite risk, they usually blamed the owners or victims for bites. Owners were blamed when they were perceived as unable to control a dog, lacking the knowledge or awareness of the dog’s behavior, or having inadequate physical strength to control the dog. For instance, one viewer said:
If that owner didn’t see that coming ... incredible ... he should have instructed the reporter how to approach the dog, as he is supposed to know how these dogs react to certain behavior. (Video no. 10)
Owners who also appeared to be the parents of the children bitten in videos were additionally identified as bad parents and blamed for the bite, even if the bite was also thought to occur due to the child’s behavior:
this is completely the parents fault not the dog!!! Why are u allowing ur child to climb on the fkn dog to begin with this is not appropriate behavior but it is appropriate for the dog to nip n say get the fk off me (...)!!! (Video no. 8)
This viewer lists a number of behaviors that they thought the child did to cause a bite; they attribute blame for the bite to the parents. Viewers blamed the parents for not controlling the child around the dog, not controlling the dog, or simply allowing the interaction to carry on for too long. For instance, a number of bites to children observed were perceived to occur during “play” between the dog and child, and although viewers argued that play bites were not serious and could not cause harm, they still thought that parents should have prevented play bites or interrupted the child–dog interaction earlier.
Blaming the Victim
Victims’ behaviors such as being too close to a dog, walking directly towards a dog, not allowing a dog to have space, and touching a dog’s neck, throat, or top of the head were thought to show that a person lacked knowledge about dog behavior, or willfully ignored it:
You have to be really stupid to walk up to a dog on a leash the way he did and start petting it. (Video no. 3)
Victim behaviors were often discussed as the reasons for a bite. a person showing these behaviors was identified as a cause of the risk and blamed for causing a bite. Furthermore, viewers felt these behaviors to be disrespectful to the dog and perceived the ensuing bite as inevitable and a lesson to learn from. For example, one viewer said:
You can’t blame dog, the [person bitten] deserved what he got (Video no. 7)
Bites as a Normal Part of Human–Dog Interactions
Viewers downplayed the risk of bites in some contexts, in particular play. One viewer said:
[B]asically if you want to play with dogs or even act like an alpha dog, you have to be able to take a bite now and then. (Video no. 9)
Play bites were often perceived as a normal and permitted part of human–dog interactions. Viewers felt that what they observed was “not an aggressive bite” (videos no. 6, 9), which suggests that viewers downplayed these bites.
In addition to defining the risk of play bites as low or acceptable, the legitimacy of the risk posed by biting dogs in contexts other than play was also questioned. this is seen in the language users used to describe bites; for instance, some were referred to as “nips” or “nibbles” (e.g., videos 2, 6, 7, 10). Bites in other contexts were also sometimes normalized. For instance, bites that followed from interactions with dogs that were thought to have received specialist training (e.g., for protection or police work) were said to be expected and fair as the dog was perceived to be doing what it was trained for. Some viewers argued that bites by trained dogs are normal, even if they occur outside of the context for which dogs were trained to bite. Other viewers opposed this view, saying that regardless of the specialist training that the dog received it is not acceptable for them to bite outside of these contexts and the owner should always be able to control the dog’s behavior in public. Normalization of bites could be detrimental to bite prevention, as risks that are seen as normal may be perceived as unavoidable, impossible to manage or reduce through changes in behaviors or practices around dogs (Westgarth & Watkins, 2015).
Discussion
In this study, we analyzed comments written in response to 10 YoutubeTM videos to explore the perceptions of risk in human–dog interactions and the way blame for bites was attributed.
Dog bites result from a complex integration of factors such as dog and human behavior, their history, knowledge, and the environment in which the interactions are taking place (mills et al., 2012). a dog that frequently interacts with a child safely may bite the same child in a course of routine interactions if, for instance, it experienced something distressing prior to meeting the child (e.g., loud noises). although each of these elements could potentially be used to explain why the bite occurred and to attribute blame for it, here we observed that YoutubeTM users focus primarily on a person’s behavior around the dog, and how child–dog interactions are supervised, but with some allowance for the dog’s nature, breed, training, and socialization. the comments on YoutubeTM reflect therefore what viewers perceived as important risks in human–dog interactions (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). Risk of bites and attribution of blame for bites was perceived in a reductive manner and becomes seen as more concrete, predictable, and well understood than they may actually be. For instance, dogs that were trained and socialized were perceived as safe and those that lacked training were perceived as a risk. Perception of risk was also aligned with dog breed, whereas evidence suggests that within-breed variation in behavior is substantial (Mehrkam & Wynne, 2014); thus, using breed to predict risk may be inaccurate. Joffe (1999) argued that people discuss risk in a way that helps them to feel protected from a threat, rather than to reflect facts or cold calculations and simplifying and reducing the complexity of risk of bites to individual factors could achieve this aim. the focus on breed specifically can also be explained with reference to the theory of risk (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983), which states that opinions regarding what constitutes risk depend on what a person or a social group considers as normal and valuable. therefore, for instance, viewers who like or know Pit bulls might be less likely to blame the breed as they value these dogs (Clarke et al., 2013), whereas viewers unfamiliar with the breed may emphasize risk posed by the breed itself. Overall, viewers’ perceptions share similarities with the risk factors for bites identified through epidemiological studies; that is, dogs’ demographic characteristics, interactions preceding the bite, victim demographics, the relationship between the person and the dog, and features of the physical environment where the interactions are taking place (Overall & love, 2001).
the understanding of risk and blame is usually dependent on the cultural and social context within which the judgement is made (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). this could not be fully explored here as it was not possible to contextualize the comments of YoutubeTM users, which is a limitation of this study. however, as YoutubeTM attracts viewers from around the world, the cultural diversity could play a part in differences in perceptions regarding, for example, breed determinism, normalcy of bites, or the extent to which an individual can be held accountable for their behavior. moreover, given that reasons for dog bites may not always be clear, dis- agreements and contradictions regarding what constitutes risk, why bites occur, and who should be blamed are to be expected. Previous research suggests that many bites may not always be easily prevented; for instance, because the victim did not know what they were doing before the bite or what provoked it, or they did know it was a risk situation but continued anyway for various reasons (Westgarth & Watkins, 2015). In contrast, our analysis suggests that dog bites are perceived to be avoidable accidents and those thought to be responsible for them (e.g., parents or owners of dogs) are blamed. this may be detrimental to risk reduction as it may encourage stigmatization of bite victims and owners of dogs that bite, which can discourage them from seeking help or reporting bites. the multiplicity of views regarding why bites occur and who is responsible for maintaining safety make the development of a bite prevention campaign challenging, and illustrates the need for any such campaign to be audience-specific and multi-level.
Following from the cultural-symbolic theory of risk, the pattern of blame attribution for dog bites reflects viewers’ understanding of the causal mechanisms behind bites (Douglas & Wildavsky, 1983). here, these mechanisms included: victim’s behavior and owner’s ability to control the dog which was perceived as conditional on owner’s personality, knowledge of dog behavior, dog handling skills, and physical strength. although risk identification was used to articulate blame attribution, risk and blame were also seen as separate. Dogs and children were identified as sources of risk, but with the exception of pit bulls, the blame for the bite was not attributed to them. the bite victims, their parents, or dog owners were blamed instead. Shaver (1985) argued that an actor has to be perceived as being responsible in order to be blamed. to do so, the actor has to be aware of the consequences of their actions, able to act differently in the given circumstances, and the person judging needs to be sure that the actor’s actions were not accidental (Shaver, 1985). It is clear from viewers’ comments that they do not see dogs or children as responsible for a bite in this sense and do not blame either of them. Risk management was nonetheless seen largely as an individual responsibility. For example, viewers argued that through knowledge of dog behavior, training and socialization, and appropriate control over one’s own behavior around dogs, individuals could prevent bites. the prevalence of dog bites is correlated with an area’s levels of economic deprivation, with more underprivileged areas observing more bites (Winter, 2015). this suggests that structural fac- tors also contribute to bite risk and understanding these is important for bite prevention. Emphasis on individual responsibility for bites makes it hard to consider the complexities of structural factors influencing dog bites; for example, socio-economic circumstances which lead to a situation in which training a dog to be aggressive may be perceived as necessary. moreover, public health prevention approaches that strive to change individual behaviors are far less successful than programs that address underlying causes at a population level (Frieden, 2010). In the case of dog bites, structural interventions could include, for example, selective breeding of dogs with stable temperaments, policies regarding muzzling and exercising dogs in public and fencing used to secure powerful breeds when in the yard, or programs that facilitate structured socialization and training. Future research into dog bites should explore how the structural factors could help to explain inequalities in bite risk, so that these can be addressed. Efforts should also be made to develop policies that operate at a population level and to shift the perception of bite prevention as a solely individual responsibility. Support systems should also be developed for owners of dogs that have bitten as well as dog bite victims and parents of children who have been bitten.
Strengths and Limitations
It is difficult to assess how generally representative the population of YoutubeTM users we studied is. however, YoutubeTM users represent a demographically diverse population in respect to gender, age, ethnicity, and nationality (Ulges, Borth, & Koch, 2013), which suggests that the range of perceptions we studied is fairly broad. Viewers can also respond to each other’s comments and this dialogue can help to illustrate the lines of disagreement. moreover, comments are likely to be typed up soon after viewing the video, and as users use aliases and pseudonyms, they can be less self-moderated than comments offered in a face-to-face interview.
Nevertheless, as it is impossible to further clarify users’ comments, it is sometimes difficult to separate trolling comments from strong views, and a number of comments were ambiguous. Further, not all YoutubeTM users watch videos of dog bites, and even fewer leave comments. moreover, only comments typed in English were analyzed here and it is plausible that perceptions of non-native (English) speakers were different to those analyzed. the sample used here may also be biased due to self-selection as not everyone uses YoutubeTM and leaves comments under videos. Finally, although a large number of comments was analyzed, our study only examined 10 videos. Future work should use qualitative approaches to further explore perception of dog bites and risk in human–dog interactions, taking into account individual contexts.
Conclusions
In this study we identified the perceptions of risk in YoutubeTM users’ comments and patterns of blame attribution for dog bites. We argue that the perception of risk in dog bites is a subjective, culturally-specific process and that the way in which blame for bites is assigned reflects what an individual considers to be a reason behind a bite. Viewers rarely blamed dogs for the bite as they did not see dogs as agents responsible for their behavior. Dog owners and bite victims were blamed instead, as they were perceived as able to prevent a bite through control and lack of provocation. Dog bites and bite prevention were seen as largely of individual responsibility, and risk of bites was often seen as simple and the interplay between multiple contributing factors was rarely acknowledged. although YoutubeTM videos need to be carefully interpreted, their analysis can help to identify attitudes and perceptions of risk around dogs that could aid bite prevention interventions and policies. Further consideration needs to be given to how individuals perceive responsibility and how they attribute blame for the bite incidents, as this could have a significant impact on the bite prevention messages. We suggest that more recognition needs to be given to bites as complex events that cannot be prevented through simple changes in individual behavior. Instead, a structural approach to bite prevention may be required.

Reconsidering the College Commitment: Issues Today Are Too Big To Ignore
Tumblr media
The most perilous idea a parent can have today about their youngster setting off for college is "I'm so happy I don't need to stress over mine heading out to class since the person in question experienced childhood in the correct condition, doesn't utilize medications and spends time with the correct children." Parents, including me, would do well to recollect that we are presented to just a little division of our kids' idea life. As they get more established, we are presented to less about how they utilize their own time. And keeping in mind that our expectations with respect to them may frequently be exact, being off-base about even one thing can be overpowering - even shocking.
Consider the calming proof with respect to school today:
1. Drop Out Rates are a Catastrophe! The school drop-out rate is twice as awful as the secondary school drop-out rate, and the secondary school drop-out rate is awful. Roughly, 25% of all secondary school understudies don't graduate (Colin Powell's associates say as much and the proof bears it out). The rate is near half for undergrads (and for certain schools it is significantly higher than half) in light of graduations rates following six years of school, not four. You would prefer not to see the multi year rates.
2. The amount Debt Can You Stand? The normal undergrad leaves their advanced education experience between $25,000 - $35,000 paying off debtors whether they graduate or not. That is the normal. Understudy advance obligation in the United States outperforms all charge card obligation - over $1,000,000,000,000 (trillion). More regrettable, the sum keeps on developing.
3. What Befell My 6,000 Hours? An understudy who leaves school following two years has contributed as long as 6,000 hours of their life in an undertaking that fizzled. Falling flat, all by itself, isn't the most exceedingly terrible thing on the planet. Indeed, disappointment is frequently an extraordinary educator. Here is the issue: The political, social, instructive and banking framework enculturate youth and families that you can't be fruitful in existence without a higher education. The pitiful circumstance currently is that practically 50% of those we send to school come up short at the essential endeavor society says they should prevail at to be effective throughout everyday life.
4. Significant Research Says Learning isn't Happening at College? As per Dr. Richard Arum (University of New York) and Dr. Josipa Ropka (University of Virginia), understudies are finishing their lesser year of school with for all intents and purposes no net increment in learning. In their book, Academically Adrift, they exhibit that the general volume of perusing and composing based schoolwork expected of undergrads is the most reduced it has been in an age. Indeed, even with the diminished work, graduation rates are as yet appalling. Arum composed more than 10,000 presidents and college pioneers tending to the issues inside the previous two years, and there has been practically no reaction from the instructive network. Know here BEd course in rajkot
5. Do You Really Need College to Get Ahead? Forbes Magazine researched a couple of years back demonstrating that most understudies would end up as a winner by a) not setting off for college, b) getting a respectable line of work and c) setting aside however much cash as could be expected. This originates from an organization included those with cutting edge advanced educations who realize how to do the math. Their exploration indicated that with great cash the executives, about any individual who didn't head off to college could be similarly also off monetarily as those with a degree. Obviously, on the off chance that you are setting off for college to be a specialist or an administrator in a social work calling, you must choose between limited options. Be that as it may, the obligation issue is as yet a main consideration in plotting your course through school.
6. The More Money Over Your Lifetime "Deception". Of the considerable number of reasons you are let you know ought to set off for college, this is the one that is the most distorted by government officials, banks, funders and the schools themselves. I just allude to it as the huge "distortion". The equivalent Forbes article referenced beforehand says that it is deluding and wrong to imagine that school graduates will get more cash-flow after some time than their non-school partners. This is an amazing counter to the well established tried and true way of thinking, cited endlessly that "you will get more cash-flow in the event that you get a higher education".
The individuals who enroll you to their school, impact you to set off for college, need to back your training, and so on reveal to you that you'll get significantly more cash-flow throughout everyday life on the off chance that you have an advanced education.
While it might fluctuate dependent upon the situation, there are in any event five convincing motivations to accept this isn't accurate:
#1: College is the New High School and That Does Not Impress Employers
An age back, kids learned Greek, Latin and Philosophy in secondary school (some in center school). Practically every college in America today has a nearby Writing Center to show medicinal English and composing aptitudes to understudies. The facts confirm that a few understudies who utilize these administrations are worldwide understudies whose English is their second or third language. In any case, as a school teacher/educator, I can let you know from my own experience that the composing abilities of local conceived Americans is nothing to boast about. As a rule, it is discouraging to perceive what is permitted to go through secondary school as adequate composition.
In their book and scholarly exploration of more than 2,000 arbitrarily chose understudies, Drs. Arum and Ropka found that an inconceivable level of understudies were entering their lesser year of school with truly no net increment in learning. On the off chance that this is valid, and there have not been noteworthy answers, you can without much of a stretch fall behind by heading off to college and not learning or dropping out. This is applicable on the grounds that businesses are talking boisterous and clear that they are disappointed with the low aptitude levels and qualification outlook of the present school graduates. Google as of late reported an activity to start finding non-school graduates with the correct abilities and aptitudes that they can prepare for their business, subsequently bypassing the advanced degree framework for their own procedure. Google, maybe the most dynamic manager on earth, perceives that the current framework is basically neglecting to deliver what they need. Universities, and by augmentation center schools and secondary schools are just neglecting to address the issues of corporate and non-benefit bosses. While numerous businesses despite everything appear for the mandatory vocation reasonable at the neighborhood college or school, the incredible occupations and openings are heading off to the extraordinary personalities who system and make the most of the non-scholastic open doors managed by the networks wherein they live.
#2: Making Money isn't an Indicator of Responsible Spending
Aesthetic Sciences schools and colleges invest next to no energy helping understudies with life the executives abilities, picking to concentrate to a great extent on social and cause related encounters (another engaged analysis by Arum and Ropka). Numerous private schools like ECPI University, Bryant and Stratton and others do give financial plan and cash the executives as a feature of their educational plan, yet they serve the market uniquely in contrast to do significant schools. Whatever happened to evaluating the components associated with satisfaction and individual satisfaction other than cash?
#3: More Income Means Greater Access to Debt
As the American culture has gotten progressively increasingly materialistic, its craving for obligation to fund its wants has detonated. The quantity of school graduates declaring financial insolvency versus non-graduates due to this wonder has limited drastically in the previous twenty years. School graduates are declaring financial insolvency at a developing and disturbing rate comparative with their non-graduate companions. The primary concern is millions are acknowledging since living with more cash and high pressure isn't justified, despite any potential benefits. Living inside your methods, in any event, when it includes less salary is all the more fulfilling, more advantageous and progressively supportable.
They state it since it was the support that helped them choose to go, and what better approach to legitimize the choices I made than to utilize similar contentions on you.
#4: The Role of Alcohol and Drug Abuse on Campus Destroying Dreams and Costing Us All
The Dean of Students at one school recognized that 25% of their green bean class every year is lost due to poor scholarly execution legitimately connected with liquor and medication abuse. He said that his partners the nation over demonstrated that is an agent figure. The earnestness of this issue is known and felt at each center school, secondary school, school and college in the nation.
It is at the secondary school to school progress, be that as it may, that young view their drinking from new and avowing points of view:
1. They are transitioning soon - in any event legitimately.
2. They plan intellectually to stamp their 21st year with a beverage.
3. It is socially adequate at school whether it is lawful or not.
4. Numerous guardians approve drinking and some really bolster it as a social hindrance breaker.
5. It is open with a diminishing level of hazard.
6. It is seen as more secure than different medications.
7. Hazard/Reward appraisals favor drinking. Getting alcoholic is unimaginably a good time (for a brief period).
The issue comes when you understand that around 70% of all liquor utilization by youth, remembering for school, occurs after children are as of now legitimately alcoholic. Consider what that implies. When tanked, they drink enough to become legitimately inebriated in any event two additional occasions while they are as of now alcoholic.
It is all around perceived since this conduct is profoundly affecting learning, duty and maintenance - information maintenance, just as keeping up the capacity to stay in school.
On the off chance that that is not terrible enough, factor in the utilization of unlawful solutions meds, illegal medications, benzodiazepines and others, and you have a remedy for instructive and individual fiascoes. This situation is being played out a huge number of times every year now in America. In addition, the most widely recognized spot for the utilization of date assault drugs is on school grounds.

Mostly empty theater but there were possibly 15 people in the 160 seat theater.
Got seats in row C, seats 11 and 12. Smack dab in the middle and a place where the screen was close enough to fill most of my field of vision.
 ------------------
Audiences, and critics, called the original Blade Runner an esoteric film. Never before has a film been characterized so aptly. Wes Anderson is niche. David Fincher is focused. Steven Spielberg is talented. J.J. Abrams is new cinema. I hate to be so condensed in my perspective of them, but I’ll chalk it up to the short attention spans present in the online world. I hope I got my point across, though. All of these attributes I attributed to each of these accomplished directors can be seen as positive or negative. I, personally, am a fan of all of the directors I mentioned. I haven’t loved all of their works, or even seen all of their works, to be honest, but I do acknowledge their ability in crafting stories (although I have finished viewing the filmographies of J.J. Abrams and David Fincher). Their narratives have a distinct flair and I respect the craft they bring to the industry.
The connotation attached to the term ‘esoteric,’ however, was that the film was meant for those who liked noir & sci-fi stories. The film is not like Looper (2012) or Star Trek (2009), far from it. So don’t expect anything like that sort of thing going into it. The film is, at its core, a detective story. In terms of mature film, the Coen brothers can be comparable in terms of pacing, I suppose. But where the Coens have fascinating dialogue and well-executed editing, Blade Runner (1982) was more of a plodding crime story. It meanders and it doesn’t pander. It is for a specific set of people yet the film has been a major influence in the sci-fi genre, in all mediums. In this rare instance, the scathing, often empty, certain critiques of CinemaSins on the film were accurate. The fantastical visual imagery of its time nonetheless does not make a sufficient story, a well-told narrative or a propelling plot. Critics and audiences complain about that in cinema to this day and yet they gladly overlook those faults in this film.
So let’s get my thoughts on the original Blade Runner out of the way. I watched The Final Cut (2007): the one recommended by Blade Runner 2049’s director Denis Villeneuve. Like films of the past that had dark, gritty, grimy, seedy sci-fi worlds, Blade Runner had great production design. Ridley Scott is a flawed director, one who has had his fair share of duds and head-scratchers, but one thing you cannot deny is the man’s attention for detail and his extensive use of practical effects. The props used in The Martian (2015) were gorgeous. Blade Runner is no different. To cut my thoughts on the original short, here are my thoughts in a nutshell: Overrated; interesting sound design; weird parts; strange change in atmosphere/tone in final act (something I believe CinemaSins touched on) and overall a mediocre experience.
What’s lovely about this film is the fact that this film remains grounded within a future of that universe. Time has not been altered or changed to reflect modern tastes. Touch screens and head-up-displays that are prominent in our modern cinema have very little to do with the established world of Blade Runner. The Voigt-Kampff test is a technology that was interesting in the sense that it remains iconic and fascinating from a filmmaking perspective. And this film adds new vehicles, weapons and a great cinematographer to its established universe and polishes out the rough edges that were present in the original.
Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling in his second role in which he actually gets to show that he can act (the first being La La Land (2016)). Most of the time, people submit that acting, in its best (see Oscars) form is subtle. Other times they suggest that powerhouse, extremely emotional performances like Hugh Jackman’s from Prisoners (2013) is what constitutes a great performance. While I do realize that acting requires immense talent, incommensurate kinds of methods for getting into character, a cooperation between all the major filmmakers involved, and more, I lean more towards James Franco’s performance in 127 Hours (2010) than Colin Firth’s in The King’s Speech (2010). #JamesFrancowasrobbed. But rarely do I say that the casting for a film was impeccable. Sometimes certain performances win over the people, sometimes it’s a great chance for actors to branch out, sometimes there are surprises from left field, but in a few rare cases, it’s hard to see anyone else in a role. Ryan Gosling is great for K, Harrison Ford returns in good form as Deckard, Bautista brings something truly unexpected in his role and there is an integral character with a small role overall that is pitch perfect. After I saw her and Robin Wright’s subtle acting it cemented my thoughts on the film in the acting sphere. It’s superbly cast. The small important character was the actual performance that I was most pleased by in this film, however. Jared Leto was interesting as the eccentric, blind, rich man… I think.
Hans Zimmer’s talents are squandered in this film. He’s been able to collaborate to great effect in films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), as flawed and bad as it was, and the first two Kung Fu Panda films (2008 & 2011). But instead he’s to do his rendition of the original film’s compositions. He’s got to do Vangelis, again. Thirty-five years later. I get it. People like the original’s score. People worship Zimmer and Blade Runner, sometimes they happen to do both. For the original Blade Runner, that composer’s sound was an iconic part of it, sure. Doesn’t mean it was timeless. Hans Zimmer got a lot of flak for making his own version of the Batman theme in The Dark Knight trilogy, and the world is all the better for it. Here, he is boxed in the world of Blade Runner. Here, he is chained by the fans of the original. The film suffers because of those fans. Instead of going in new directions like Giacchino for Jurassic World (2015), Star Trek (2009), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) or Rogue One (2016); instead of bringing back the composer that he previously collaborated with in 2015 for Sicario, Johann Johannsen, we are given a bland fan offering. There are moments when I notice the film’s music is about to head to something great, and then it veers towards synth sci-fi. Film score snobs, music critics and whoever else may heap praise upon Zimmer and his Dunkirk (2017) collaborator Ben W. for this film, but I won’t be one of them. Zimmer and his new buddy (Zimmer worked well with Junkie XL in Batman V Superman (2016); Junkie XL previously crafted a great score for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)) are forced to placate the appetites of voracious fans instead of going in bold, new directions. I dislike the music. You might like it. And you’re free to do so. Music, I find, is a far more divisive medium concerning tastes than film. So go nuts and go crazy for all I care. Yo Yo Ma spoke about music that sounded good to him. The music in the Blade Runner universe doesn’t sound good to me. For more perspective on how the original film’s sound and soundtrack are layered and the like, you can see Nerdwriter1’s video on the matter.
The cinematography is so darn good. When used right, the visuals in a film can heighten the action, improve the pacing and make meaning of everything. The locked camera of Jackie Chan and Hong Kong directors make the action far more interesting than in Hollywood blockbusters with people flailing around in darkness (See EFAP’s video on Jackie Chan). Blade Runner 2049 reunites director Denis V. and cinematographer Roger Deakins. I’m just going to state for the record that I’m a fan. A big fan. I want to watch every film Deakins has ever done because seeing his work in this century’s films, I’m truly blown away. Directors need to work with a bunch of people to block and all, but a cinematographer like Deakins makes the final product that much better. Everything moves with purpose. The camera work is streamlined and masterful. I can’t really express in words how he does what he does besides a few interviews Deakins has done himself and a video by Tony Zhou (Every Frame A Painting, a truly artful man with a way with words. And a quick message to Zhou, if he somehow stumbles across my writing: Please come back to your channel and continue to do video essays. Please. We all miss you. Come back. Please.). The visual artistry of this film is profound. Denis and Roger should continue to work together for as long as possible.
The story of Blade Runner 2049 has a similar progression to its predecessor, in certain aspects. Its broad narrative is an investigation with mystery in a sci-fi setting. Whereas the previous film meanders, wastes time with its groundbreaking visual effects (there are shots of the iconic buildings that are just viewed from different angles with synth music blasting) and overall the plot devolves in its final act (turning into a slasher film, as noted by CinemaSins, I’m not calling CS good or critic-worthy but they occasionally do make some valid points)—this film is much more focused. This film finds a solid story progression but it too finds ways to slow down its story. There are lulls in between the acting, the spectacle, the visuals and the narrative. Although the argument can be made that the lulls are necessary, how you react to them can be a large indicator of what kind of moviegoer you are. If you perceive The Revenant (2015), Memento (2000), No Country For Old Men (2007) or Gravity (2013) as niche, indie, weird, dumb or boring, Blade Runner and its sequel are definitely not for you. Of note: all the previous films I mentioned in that sentence are ones I enjoy. Note: I enjoy them. You don’t have to. You can have your own dang opinion. You’re free to express that... For the most part. Anyways, on the bright side the film finds philosophic ideas to explore, interesting sci-fi settings to discover and the like… but I found it to be more of a specifically satisfying affair. Like the original Blade Runner, Rogue One, Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), The Avengers (2012) and Terminator (1984), I understand why people like this film. But it doesn’t mean that I have to. I respect the craft and artistry. I do. But it’s not something that connects with me. It’s not that it falls flat. It’s just that the sum of its parts do not add up to a greater whole. I shouldn’t be analyzing a film based on math but I’m just trying to make a point. BR 2049 is exceptional filmmaking… but it’s rare in its appeal. It’s finely tuned, for the right group.
TL;DR: Not for me, but I respect the craft. 3/5 stars
