Changes to the Popular Pairing List

Over nearly 9 years of Femslash Revolution, we have watched the popularity of many, many pairings rise and fall again. In order to better reflect this, we have decided to switch how we define our popular pairing list, which determines which pairings are too popular to be posted on Rarepair Thursdays.

Previously, posts were added to the list when they had appeared on the blog over 20 times across its whole duration. Under the new system, we will look at the number of appearances in the 10,000 most recent posts, which reflects approximately the last 18 months of content. Any pairing with more than 10 posts in that time span will be added to the list, while older pairings which no longer receive so many posts will be removed.

Bouckaert Equestrian has been running through the 4* this past weekend, and we’ve been following along with them, but we also saw plenty of other events taking place this weekend, with Full Gallop, SAzEA, and Southern Pines bringing Eventers on.

Matthew Paige Damon (October 8, 1970) is an American actor, film producer, and screenwriter. Son of Dracula is Chad’s pick and he’s surprised at how much he likes it! For him, Lon Chaney Jr. has an imposing presence as Count Alucard/Dracula even though he is sans accent and doesn’t feel as dignified as Lugosi’s version. Overall he thinks it’s a cool story and the effects were better than he expected; especially the smoke/vapor transformations.

For Daphne, Son of Dracula feels more like Kay’s (Louis Allbritton) story than Dracula’s. Although Lon Chaney Jr. is physically imposing as Dracula, she is a little let down by his performance. She is, however, impressed with some of the actors and Robert Paige’s performance as Frank reminds her a little of some of George Bailey’s (James Stewart) frantic dashes to come in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). 

On the surface, Son of Dracula felt a little lame to Jeff but once he got into it, it was better than he remembered. He also loves the smoke effects and the bat transformations and really appreciates the character of Queen Zimba, as short as her appearance is. The Classic Era Grue-Crew universally lament the plight of poor, poor, pitiful Frank.

As of this writing, Son of Dracula is currently available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, Tubi, Plex, and various PPV options. Of course, the Blu-ray is available in Dracula: Complete Legacy Collection [Blu-ray] and Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection [Blu-ray].

Son Of Dracula (1943)

Son of Dracula is a 1943 American horror film directed by Robert Siodmak with a screenplay based on an original story by his brother Curt Siodmak. The film stars Lon Chaney, Jr., Louise Allbritton, Robert Paige, Evelyn Ankers, and Frank Craven. The film is set in the United States, where Count Alucard (Chaney Jr.) has just taken up residence. Katherine Caldwell (Allbritton), a student of the occult, becomes fascinated by Alucard and eventually marries him. Katherine begins to look and act strangely, leading her former romantic partner Frank Stanley (Paige) to suspect that something has happened to her. He gets help from Dr. Brewster (Craven) and psychologist Laszlo (J. Edward Bromberg) who come to the conclusion that Alucard is a vampire.

The film is the third in Universal's Dracula film series following Dracula's Daughter (1936). The film was made under different circumstances than the previous two entries in the series with a new Chairman of the Board working at Universal and several horror sequels being made since the success of the film Son of Frankenstein (1939). The film was initially being written by Curt Siodmak who was later replaced by Eric Taylor. Filming began on January 7, 1943 and concluded on February 2. Few documents related to the film's production survive from studio files or trade reports.

Son of Dracula was held back from release for about six months before its premiere in the United States, with the earliest known release date being on October 20, 1943, at Cine Olimpia in Mexico City. On its initial release, the trade magazine Boxoffice declared Son of Dracula as a hit in the United States where its sales were 23% above average. Initial reception to the film was described as "varied" by film historian Gary Rhodes.
