"A 2019 sighting by five witnesses indicates that the long-extinct Javan tiger may still be alive, a new study suggests.
A single strand of hair recovered from that encounter is a close genetic match to hair from a Javan tiger pelt from 1930 kept at a museum, the study shows.
“Through this research, we have determined that the Javan tiger still exists in the wild,” says Wirdateti, a government researcher and lead author of the study.
The Javan tiger was believed to have gone extinct in the 1980s but only officially declared as such in 2008...
Ripi Yanuar Fajar and his four friends say they’ll never forget that evening after Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration in 2019 when they encountered a big cat roaming a community plantation in Sukabumi, West Java province.
Immediately after the brief encounter, Ripi, who happens to be a local conservationist, reached out to Kalih Raksasewu, a researcher at the country’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), saying he and his friends had seen either a Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas), a critically endangered animal, or a Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica), a subspecies believed to have gone extinct in the 1980s but only officially declared so in 2008.
About 10 days later, Kalih visited the site of the encounter with Ripi and his friends. There, Kalih found a strand of hair snagged on a plantation fence that the unknown creature was believed to have jumped over. She also recorded footprints and claw marks that she thought resembled those of a tiger.
Kalih then sent the hair sample and other records to the West Java provincial conservation agency, or BKSDA, for further investigation. She also sent a formal letter to the provincial government to follow up on the investigation request. The matter eventually landed at BRIN, where a team of researchers ran genetic analyses to compare the single strand of hair with known samples of other tiger subspecies, such as the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) and a nearly century-old Javan tiger pelt kept at a museum in the West Java city of Bogor.
“After going through various process of laboratory tests, the results showed that the hair sample had 97.8% similarities to the Javan tiger,” Wirdateti, a researcher with BRIN’s Biosystemic and Evolutionary Research Center, said at an online discussion hosted by Mongabay Indonesia on March 28.
The discussion centered on a study published March 21 in the journal Oryx in which Wirdateti and colleagues presented their findings that suggested that the long-extinct Javan tiger may somehow — miraculously — still be prowling parts of one of the most densely populated islands on Earth.
Their testing compared the Sukabumi hair sample with hair from the museum specimen collected in 1930, as well as with other tigers, Javan leopards and several sequences from GenBank, a publicly accessible database of genetic sequences overseen by the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
The study noted that the supposed tiger hair had a sequence similarity of 97.06% with Sumatran tigers and 96.87% with Bengal tigers. Wirdateti also conducted additional interviews with Ripi and his friends about the encounter they’d had.
“I wanted to emphasize that this wasn’t just about finding a strand of hair, but an encounter with the Javan tiger in which five people saw it,” Kalih said.
“There’s still a possibility that the Javan tiger is in the Sukabumi forest,” she added. “If it’s coming down to the village or community plantation, it could be because its habitat has been disturbed. In 2019, when the hair was found, the Sukabumi region had been affected by drought for almost a year.” ...
Didik Raharyono, a Javan tiger expert who wasn’t involved in the study but has conducted voluntary expeditions with local wildlife awareness groups since 1997, said the number of previous reported sightings coupled with the new scientific findings must be taken seriously. He called on the environment ministry to draft and issue a policy on measures to find and conserve the Javan tiger.
“What’s most important is the next steps that we take in the future,” Didik said."

"Doing an animal that is so beloved is a real challenge. You want to have it right because you think people might be pickier. It was a really nice experience going further into minimal details trying not just to catch the shape of the animal but also its soul."
As I mentioned to you in my previous post (If you haven't seen it go check it out) I was going to mix things up. Instead of illustrating the whole family at once, I decided to do a couple of families and show a different member every week. I decided to go with the felines because I know how much they are loved but also how challenging they could be. It is my first feline so I struggle with things that none of the other animals I've done has.
Indochinese Tiger
Tigers are a special species. For many years it was thought that they are 9 subspecies. However, the latest studies (2017) demonstrate that they are just two subspecies and each of them is divided by populations of tigers. This is still in debate but most of the books that I checked welcomed this hypothesis. The Indochinese Tiger belongs to the genus panthera tigris tigris along with the Bengal Tiger, the Amur Tiger, and basically, all the tigers that live in Asia land. The other subspecies is the panthera tigris sondaica which are the groups that live in Indonesia. Sumatran Tiger, Bali Tiger, etc.
The Indochinese Tiger was seen in the infamous and today closed Tiger Temple, in Thailand. Where the monks used to drug the tigers, so people can gather around them without any danger. It is also said that they used to sell body parts of the tigers. I must confess that I went to the place ignoring that such horrible things were happening. What a shame. Something to think about. There are more tigers as pets in the United States than in the wild. W.T.F.! StoreInstagram

Some head studies I did of Sumatran tigers! (+ a sneak peek at my next one... the bodies!) I got this random thought at one point, like "huh I wonder how different tigers look?" looked it up and saw these fur babies! they are so interesting and cool! Decided they'll be my first study! And with each one I post, some facts! here we go!!!!!!!
ღ They are the smallest of all tigers! (that are alive) weighing between 242-308ibs!
ღThey originate from Sumatra, Indonesia's western most and largest island
ღ Panthera tigris sondaica is their species' name
ღThey have a longer/fuller beard compared to other species and thinner stripes
Thats all for now! Sources:

question from a fellow animal lover: why do you tag canada lynx, eurasian lynx but not bengal tiger, siberian tiger?
honestly i don't even know if i actively thought about it HAHA i just tag/ID based on like feeling but i guess bc there's 4 different, distinct species of lynx but there's only one species of tiger with various groups of subspecies and it's like 10 times more complicated/location based (and there's actually a bit of taxonomic drama surrounding tigers specifically lol) while they still all belong to the same species (panthera tigris). if that makes sense?
so while the sunda island tiger and sumatran tiger are two different populations they all belong to the panthera tigris sondaica subspecies, and panthera tigris is their species. likewise the bengal, siberian, malayan, south china and indochinese tigers are all populations of panthera tigris tigris. they all look pretty similar and it's a bit harder to identify what's what for me from image alone with no other indication of their size/location (though the mainland asian tiger is definitely more populous, and most tigers you see pretty much are p. t. tigris).
and going off of that, the four lynx species all look pretty recognisably different!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it also just gets into redundancy which i try to avoid as much as possible to make my tagging system clear :3 i p much will only ID the genus and species and if the subspecies is obvious/important i'll try

Sunda Tiger
Facts
Tumblr media
This subspecies was once prevalent in numerous regions of Indonesia's Sunda islands. Now that tigers in Java and Bali are extinct, the only remaining Sunda tigers can be found in Sumatra.
Website
STATUS: Critically Endangered
POPULATION: Less than 400
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Panthera tigris sondaica
WEIGHT: 165–308 pounds
HABITATS: Tropical broadleaf evergreen forests, freshwater swamp forests and peat swamps
Sunda tigers are identified by their orange coats with thick black stripes. The last of the Sunda island tigers—estimated to be fewer than 400 today—are clinging to life in the island of Sumatra's remnant forest patches. Deforestation is accelerating, and poaching is common, so this magnificent species, like its Javan and Balinese brethren, may go extinct.
Tumblr media
Anyone found shooting tigers in Indonesia might face jail time and hefty penalties. Despite improved efforts in tiger conservation, such as boosting law enforcement and antipoaching capabilities, there is still a significant market for tiger parts and goods in Sumatra and other regions of Asia. Poaching is a constant threat to Sunda tigers, which are rapidly losing their habitat and prey.
Why They Matter
Sumatra is the only site in the world where tigers, rhinos, orangutans, and elephants coexist in the wild. The Sunda tiger's presence is a good indicator of a forest's health and biodiversity. Many other animals, including humans, benefit from the protection of tigers and their habitat.
Threats
Tumblr media
Illegal Wildlife Trade
In Sumatra, the majority of tigers are murdered for commercial reasons. Poaching for trade, according to TRAFFIC, the global wildlife trade monitoring network, is responsible for about 80% of estimated Sumatran tiger deaths, or at least 40 animals each year.
Despite increased conservation and protection measures in some parts of Sumatra, as well as some success in reducing tiger bone markets, there is no indication that tiger poaching has decreased dramatically since the early 1990s.
Human Wildlife Conflict
Tiger dispersal in search of their territory, as well as habitat deterioration, pulls tigers out of protected regions and into human-occupied areas, where they are more likely to encounter humans. Human-tiger conflict is a severe problem in Sumatra, as it is in other regions of the tiger's habitat. Tigers have killed or injured people, and livestock has been stolen. Tigers may be killed as a result of villagers' retaliation.
Habitat Loss
Tumblr media
Clearing for agriculture (especially oil palm), plantations, and habitation has severely impacted the Sumatran tiger's habitat. Illegal timber harvesting and forest conversion are out of control in several regions of the island. The island's forest cover decreased from 58 percent to 26 percent between 1985 and 2014. Even protected locations are not immune to difficulties. Furthermore, forest conversion has separated national parks, as well as populations of species like tigers that require extensive territories for nesting, feeding, and dispersal.

LOVINA-UBUD

Species name: Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae or sondaica)
Description: The Sumatran tiger is the world’s smallest tiger subspecies* but still the largest predator in Indonesia. An adult female weighs about 198 pounds (90 kg), while an adult male can be more than 264 pounds (120 kg), with a shoulder height of about 23 inches (60 cm). Sumatran tigers have great day and night vision, very strong canine teeth, and impressive claws for holding and gripping moving prey. Their vision is six times better than humans’ at night, but hearing is their most acute sense, mainly used for hunting. They can detect high-pitched sounds produced by prey. Each individual Sumatran tiger has nearly 100 unique stripe patterns, like human fingerprints, which provide camouflage. Based on these stripes, scientists can identify individual tigers in the wild.*
(Editor’s note: Tiger subspecies remain a matter of ongoing scientific discussion.)
Where it’s found: Endemic to the island of Sumatra, this predator still lives in 24 of 38 landscapes larger than 96 square miles (250 square km), the smallest area that can support a breeding unit.
IUCN Red List status: Endangered at the species level of Panthera tigris. Assessment for all subspecies, including Sumatran tigers, has been discharged by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature awaiting further reassessments. Detail about Sumatran tiger status, however, is provided in the supplementary material of the assessment.
