I enjoyed my trip to Turkey... my first time going into a muslim country which I had been thinking of doing since last year but it got postponed...  I do like the oriental culture to be honest... and it was super safe. Since Turkey is not in the EU it took a lot of time to get our passports checked on the borders and we went by bus. We went first the European part, then the Asian part with fountains and buildings which look more like those in Dubai and they played some of their Eurovision songs that they sent in the past... Istanbul is a very big city... with a lot of traffic and it’s always very lively because there are a lot of people walking around... Istanbul connects Europe with Asia... the buildings were skyscrapers like in the US... it is a really cosmopolitan city...

We went on a cruise ship to an island near and spent some time there for a drink and then had dinner on another cruise ship with belly dancers entertaining us... we also saw some churches, mosques, gardens (with tulips that could compete with those in the Netherlands) and shops... to my surprise they had real palm trees in some parts too. We also went to the Egyptian market (they did have stuff from Egypt in there, also we saw the Ancient Egyptian obelisk) before going home... (btw not every woman was wearing a headscarf on the streets). We weren’t allowed to go to the beach and if we wanted to go inside a mosque that’s when we had to wear a headscarf and walk barefoot. We noticed that it was mainly just men working as waiters at the restaurants (by contrast in Bulgaria you’d see more women being waitresses). Tried some of my favorite doners and wraps... also tried Turkish delight and bought some baklava for back home. The people were actually super friendly to Bulgarian tourists which I was not expecting... when we were in a restaurant in the Asian part of the city, they played a Bulgarian song for us lmao.

In the shops there were some cool stuff like Turkish lamps and a lamp that looked a lot like the one in Aladdin (The Disney movie)... but I spent most of my money on food as usual haha.

I did wanna go to Istanbul because I had heard a lot about it when I was studying history in school... (its old names are Constantinople and Tsarigrad). We also saw the Bosporus and the Marmara Sea. If you learned history going to these kinda cities might make more sense...

Some parts were talking about how powerless and small women are as objects to powerful men. As a woman, her sexuality, beauty, and body are tools for her to make a living. She feels power and importance through these qualities, but there is always a ceiling that is made with glass, you can see the sky through the glass, but can never reach it. People don’t take women seriously if they are petty. They view pretty women as empty shells, and claim they can offer nothing but their beauty, to satisfy men’s desires.

I remembered listening a feminism podcast that had been blocked in China few months ago because it was too extreme for the eastern culture. Obviously, men are not capable of handling women who want power, there’s zero tolerance for women who don’t act “like women”, in other words, completely under control by man and would never surprise them.

The host was talking about egalitarianism, stating, “if women refused to stand on the other side of the scale it would never be balanced.” Her voice sounded full of rage. I felt hesitant, and wondered, is hatefulness inevitable?

As a woman who grew up in China, the whole society, my family, my father, my grandmother, and my aunts.. had taught me to bury my ambition, marry with a guy who has a stable foundation that can shoulder the responsibility for both of us. I had never believed that’s what I wanted; I felt disconnected from myself when I imagined that. As if to hand over every piece of me to a man, and then thank him for it.

My aunt was a woman who supported her whole family to live, including her younger brothers. She once told me “I am their older sister, I have the responsibility to take care of them although sometimes it is exhausting, I feel happy.” I gazed into her eyes, is she independent? She is. Is she strong? She is. Does that matter? Maybe it does, maybe not. Her independence exists not for herself, but mostly for the men around her. They need her as a sister, a mother, a girlfriend to perform their responsibilities on their behalf. She told me when I was a kid to comfort me that my mother and father had never been around… “You know, you never lacked freedom, not like other kids.” She was right, and I was proud of it.

My mother has always been a woman who attacks the values of how to be a traditional, civilized woman and so on. She called me one day when I was 20. I was making a living by modeling. Lived with a bunch of my friends in a two bedroom apartment that smelled like cigarettes.

I had dropped out of high school three years earlier because I had been put in a vocational high school that taught us how to fold sheets, and pour red wine into glass in order to find a waitress job after graduation. The biggest dream for my classmates was going to a Dubai five-star hotel to be waitresses or waiters. Our teacher excitedly told us there were 10 places in these hotels for us to compete for… “ So you guys better practice folding the sheets and pouring the wine perfectly, because this is a rare opportunity.” I dreamed about being a waitress in a Dubai hotel, imagining a restaurant under the sea… I could see sharks and fish through the glass walls.

I couldn’t remember why my mother and I started the argument, but she roared sarcastically “ Do you want to live in that city until you die?” Such a harsh question to ask, was that even a question or an accusation? I hanged up the phone immediately, and thought: I don’t want to fucking die here without seeing the world.

After one month, I brought 2000 rmb, which was $290 dollars, left home and flew to a city on an island about 900 miles from home. I found a job there, and started my life independently. I was alone. But I was always alone for as long as I could remember.

I never went back to my hometown, I mean to live. I sometimes still think about the experience during the time, had my mother freed me from my background? I was supposed to be a particular woman, in a role that society had given to me before I was born. Had my mother rescued me from that pattern, just as she escaped from her own fucked up life when I was 10? I never found the answer.

I don’t know why I mention this experience in my life, maybe because it was the turning point in my life, like when the author started modeling when she was 14. This brought me and her to today. It’s such a big difference between me and her life, but as a woman I don’t see there’s a big difference. As human being, there’s even less difference.

Your sleep has been broke when your mobile rang.

 You open your eyes and immediately saw the digital clock on your bedside and saw its still 6 in the morning.

 You plan to just ignore the call, but when you remember that it might be Christian calling, you felt some chills run thru your body and thinking that he’s already on the Arrival of the airport waiting. You suddenly reach it.

 As you check the caller ID, Jamie name is on the screen.

 You felt relieved. And sad.

 “Hello?” you answered without energy for the lack of sleep.

 “Good morning to you too Madam.” Jane said in a full of energy.

 “Hah! What’s up Jamie? It’s better to be a good one on this early morning.”

“Well, I guess it’s good and a bit of bad.”

  “Fine. Nowadays I don’t think anything will surprise me after what happened yesterday. So tell me.”

  “Okay. First thing is that friend of yours who you asked me to look up his flight details, luckily I contact Rafael during his shift so he gave me the info and as he checks there’s two flight schedule under the same name and -” You cut her off on what she is saying.

 “What?!” ‘What the heck does he thinking booking in two flights.’

 “Heh Heh - and as I was talking to Rafael that time, the last additional booking been confirmed. Meaning that friend of yours check-in at that moment.”

  “And what time does he be arriving here Jamie? Please just tell me and I think my head will explode any moment.”

  “That will be exactly 30 minutes ago since his plane arrived at the airport.”

 “The fudge Jamie! Why did you just call me now?! Haaaish!” You got off from your bed fast as if it’s on fire.

  “Chill Madam, here’s the good thing. I have the idea that after that sudden visit from your father and that fine man yesterday you’ll be staying awake for the whole night. So.. as a good friend of yours, I took the liberty of picking up your friend and I’m currently driving my way to the arrival now.” Hearing that, you felt relieved and thankful for Jamie. “What’s his name again -” You heard some flipping papers.

 “Christian.” You continued.

 “Yeah. Also known as Mr. Ba Rom Yu. Gosh, being Korean must be cool, you can have two names.” You gave in for a small laugh. “Anyways, while I pick him up could you make your self-be at your gorgeous form for I already booked the two of you a breakfast reservation at the restaurant just in front your building. Or you just want me to bring him up there in your apartment?” You heard her laugh.

 “You’re crazy Jamie! But thank you so much for this.”

  “You’re thanking me because I will bring him up in your apartment?” You can’t help but laugh as well. “Well, I just parked my car and I’m on my way in the Arrival section.”

 “Okay. I’ll get a quick shower and just wait for you both at the restaurant. Thank you again, friend.”

  “No worries. Oh! I almost forgot.”

  “What is it?”

 “Could you possibly send me any current picture of this friend of yours? So I won’t look so clueless while waiting for him. And I bet that he doesn’t expect that someone will pick him up.”

  “Sure no problem. I’ll just send you now.”

  “That would be great.”

  “Later then.” You’re about to end the call when she says something.

 “Wait Y/N!”

  “What is it?” You asked on confuse.

 “You’re sure his just a friend? Nothing more?” You can imagine that she’s smiling like an idiot.

 “Oh, Jamie! You and your filthy mind. He’s a fri-” You pause for a moment because something inside you is against on what you about to say. “- a dear friend of mine, okay?”

You inhale then exhale for two to three times before you finally move yourself to take a short shower.

 While drying your hair, your eyes is busy assessing your closet on what to wear and checking your phone time to time.

 Finally, over the clothes you have (you’re not that really into buying many clothes. and fashion for you is wearing anything comfy) not that many to choose from. You settled for an off-shoulder top, a ripped jeans and white rubber shoes.

 Not so over the top, just casual enough for just a breakfast. And hell, why am I so conscious of what I’m going to wear?! Just relax Y/N. Damn Jamie, she got you on her plan thinking that this is a date or something. But you’ll be meeting with Christian.
