A Big Move
No, not me: the Crowninshield-Bentley House! Visiting Louise DuPont Crowninshield’s former garden in Marblehead last week prompted me to reconsider her impact on Salem as a preservation advocate and philanthropist as it is considerable. At least two institutions in Salem, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and the Peabody Essex Museum, reflect her commitment to the preservation of Salem’s…

The second postcard for International Postcard Week is from Salem, Massachusetts. This house was called the “Pineapple House” because of the pineapple decoration above the doorway. The large Georgian house was built by Captain Thomas Poynton sometime between 1740 and 1750. While the house was believed to have been demolished sometime after 1923, and the door frame with pineapple pediment was donated to the Essex Institute (now the Peabody Essex Museum) and installed in the Phillips Library there. We don't know if that’s still in the case. Maybe @Peabodyessex can let us know?

Art and Culture Scene in Oak Brook, Illinois: Local Artists and Cultural Movements.
Nestled in the western suburbs of Chicago, Oak Brook, Illinois, is often perceived as a hub of commerce and corporate headquarters. However, beyond its business acumen, Oak Brook boasts a vibrant and evolving art and culture scene that reflects both its historical roots and contemporary dynamism. From local artists to cultural movements, this community offers a rich tapestry of artistic expression and cultural engagement.
Historical Context and Cultural Foundations
Oak Brook’s cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with its history, marked by the establishment of the village in the 1950s. The community’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty and fostering a sense of identity has significantly influenced its cultural landscape. Historic sites like the Graue Mill and Museum serve as reminders of the village’s early days, providing both educational and cultural value. These historic sites often host art exhibitions, craft fairs, and cultural events that celebrate Oak Brook’s rich heritage.
Prominent Cultural Institutions
Central to Oak Brook’s cultural scene is the Oak Brook Public Library, which serves as a beacon of learning and cultural exchange. The library regularly hosts art exhibitions, workshops, and lectures, featuring both local and visiting artists. These events provide a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with the community, fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.
Another cornerstone is the Mayslake Peabody Estate, a historic mansion that doubles as a cultural center. Operated by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, Mayslake offers a diverse array of cultural programming, including art classes, theater productions, and musical performances. Its beautiful surroundings also provide inspiration for plein air painters and photographers.
Local Artists: A Diverse and Talented Community
The local artist community in Oak Brook is a mosaic of diverse talents and styles, reflecting the broader cultural movements of the region. Painters, sculptors, photographers, and mixed-media artists all contribute to the vibrant art scene.
One notable figure is Lisa Holgersen, a painter known for her evocative landscapes and abstract works. Holgersen’s art captures the natural beauty of the Midwest, transforming familiar scenes into contemplative pieces that invite viewers to see the world through her unique lens. Her work is frequently exhibited at local galleries and cultural events, earning her a dedicated following within the community.
In the realm of sculpture, Jonathan Dublin stands out with his contemporary pieces that often incorporate found objects and recycled materials. Dublin’s sculptures challenge traditional notions of art, blending elements of sustainability with creative expression. His installations can be seen in public spaces throughout Oak Brook, serving as both artistic statements and conversation starters about environmental stewardship.
Photographer Maria Sanchez offers another perspective, with her work focusing on the intersection of urban and natural environments. Sanchez’s photography captures the subtle interplay between light and shadow, structure and form, often highlighting the hidden beauty in everyday scenes. Her exhibitions at local venues, including the Oak Brook Public Library, draw art enthusiasts from across the region.
Cultural Movements and Community Engagement
Cultural movements in Oak Brook are often characterized by a strong emphasis on community engagement and collaboration. Initiatives such as the Oak Brook Art League bring together artists and art lovers for regular meetings, workshops, and exhibitions. This organization plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community among local artists, providing them with opportunities to network, collaborate, and showcase their work.
Moreover, Oak Brook is home to numerous cultural festivals and events that celebrate the arts. The annual "Art in the Park" festival, held at Central Park, is a highlight of the cultural calendar, featuring local artists, live music, and family-friendly activities. This event not only provides a platform for artists to sell their work but also encourages community members to engage with the arts in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
Another significant cultural movement is the push towards integrating public art into everyday spaces. The Village of Oak Brook has initiated several public art projects, commissioning murals, sculptures, and installations that enhance the aesthetic appeal of public spaces. These projects often involve community input and participation, ensuring that the art reflects the collective identity and values of the residents.
Educational and Outreach Programs
Educational initiatives are a cornerstone of Oak Brook’s cultural scene. Local schools and institutions often collaborate with artists and cultural organizations to provide art education programs for students of all ages. These programs aim to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness among the younger generation.
The Oak Brook Art League, for instance, offers workshops and classes in various mediums, catering to both beginners and experienced artists. These educational programs are designed to be accessible and inclusive, encouraging people from all walks of life to explore their artistic potential.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Art and Culture in Oak Brook
As Oak Brook continues to grow and evolve, so too does its art and culture scene. The village’s commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural community is evident in its ongoing support for local artists and cultural initiatives. Future plans include expanding public art projects, enhancing cultural programming at existing institutions, and exploring new venues for artistic expression.
In conclusion, Oak Brook, Illinois, offers a rich and dynamic art and culture scene that is deeply rooted in its history and community spirit. From local artists who push the boundaries of creative expression to cultural movements that foster community engagement, Oak Brook is a testament to the enduring power of the arts in enriching our lives. As the village looks to the future, its cultural landscape promises to be as vibrant and diverse as the community it serves.

I’ve got a table tomorrow, May 6, at PILCon, at Peabody Institute Library in Peabody, MA. This is their first year for this all-ages event, which (this year at least) coincides with Free Comic Book Day. The show is FREE to the public from 10 AM to 4 PM. I’ll be on the “Self-Publishing and Zines” panel at 2 PM. The library is at 82 Main Street in downtown Peabody. It’s about 2 miles from the Salem Commuter Rail station, but the weather is going to be dreadful in the morning, so plan accordingly. You can let them know you’re coming via their EventBrite page, or their Facebook page. See you tomorrow!

Plummer Hall houses the Phillips Library of the Essex Institute. Built in 1856 with a bequest from Caroline Plummer. The Peabody Essex Museum, with an endowment of 750 million dollars recently announced that the library contents are to be moved out of Salem to a warehouse. This library is one of the premier research libraries in the US for maritime history, Asian trade history and colonial American history. PEM has obviously been getting lots of bad press with this lack of transparency decision. Donna Seger at streetsofsalem.com has much further information. She is chair of the Salem State History Dept.
