one of the reasons i think that the murderbot diaries’ emotional moments hit so hard is because of a scarcity effect that the author has set up really, really well.
because, like—murderbot, as a character, is an answer to the question how do you “show and not tell” emotional moments from the lens of a character who point-blank will not acknowledge any affection directed their way. or, instead of overtly stating that characters are friends (“tell”), how do you demonstrate it with text (“show”)? well, most authors go ham on characters smiling at each other, laughing, joking, expressing reciprocal loyalty.
murderbot does none of those things. murderbot probably never smiled before preservation, and definitely didn’t laugh. (this is only partially an exaggeration.) telling jokes? hell yeah, MB’s funny as fuck. to other people? hell no. that would require conversations and it’d rather die, thanks.
add that to the fact that murderbot treats any expressions of affection toward it—internal and external—like being bit by a snake.
so you have this character + writing style that bars most conventional ways of establishing relationships between characters. you also have this character who is basically incapable of feeling any sort of reciprocated, positive emotion toward itself. so what do you do?
you work around your character. murderbot will never pick up on affectionate body language. it hates hugs. every sentence it hears passes through about fifteen different filters of self-loathing. so you make your relationships clear, and when you hit, you hit hard.
you summarize snapshots of characters panicking about the main character getting hurt. you drop your character’s performance reliability (and their walls) and have them banter. you have your character walk in on the tail end of conversations that expose concern for it.
and then you do things so overt that even your shit-self-esteem character can’t talk its way out of. you have its friend tell it directly that it can’t lose it too. you have its friends accommodate it and understand it without it directly expressing a single need. you have its friends stand up for it in conversation when it is too tired to do so. and then, when you really want to hit, you have your character pretend to be physically compromised rather than have to feel one (1) positive emotion toward itself.
positive emotions toward itself can’t really pass through murderbot’s walls. so you have to establish relationships by beating your main character over the head with them. and it can’t be all the time—because that’s not how relationships and emotional recovery, yknow, works—but it can be sometimes, and it can be very powerful, and that is why i think murderbot diaries in particular is very, very effective.

The Curious Case of Rozzum Unit 7134
or "A Potential Prologue to The Wild Robot 2 Based on the Second Book"! Put short, the second book starts in a setting that's a bit different from the last scene of the movie. This is my way of linking the two!
No spoilers, but some out of context things are in there that readers of the books will definitely recognize.

*A digital interface takes up the entire screen, haptics and indiscernible code in the corners as a report is pulled up. An AI voice narrates.*
Universal Dynamics restricted file access clearance approved. Case File 62189: the curious case of Rozzum Unit 7134. 7134 was the sole surviving unit of a container ship run aground in a typhoon. Nearly a year afterwards, we received – and quickly lost – its transmitter signal from a remote northern island. Our first recovery convoy failed, and reports show that the ship and every robot aboard was destroyed by unknown means. We prepared to resort to more extreme methods until 7134 itself reactivated its signal.
*Several drone snapshots show the RECOs surrounding Roz at gunpoint on the island and escorting her onto the ship. Photos not unlike mugshots show off all the abnormalities we saw her body earn, such as her wooden leg, the moss growing along her limbs, and the broad scratches across her torso.*
The Rozzum unit returned to us in peace but continues to be an enigma to us. An in-depth diagnostic before reconditioning revealed to us that the memory bank draw had been performed mere moments before the convoy was destroyed, and the unit reported no such memories after that point. What happened on that island will seemingly never be known to us.
*There’s hardly a moment that Roz isn’t being observed by a sentry drone. She is seen in the midst of several diagnostic, verbal, and kinesthetic tests - never seeming to bat an eye. She is a capable actress and, thanks to Fink, a capable liar. As she was always meant to do, she is clearly adapting to survive even here. Footage then shows her old parts being discarded and shiny, clean new parts replacing them.*
Rozzum 7134 aced the Compliance and Sensory tests without issue and was reconditioned as an agricultural class unit. We monitored her closely during and after this transition time. No incidents or strange behaviors were observed until this past week. November 17th at 0015 hours, 7134 displayed some…concerning behaviors.
*Security drone footage shows a sequence of zoomed-in photos of Brightbill interacting vaguely with Roz (are they embracing each other??), Roz noticing the drone, and Roz aiding in the goose’s escape from the dome. The final video shows Roz holding up her hands in baffled surrender before the surrounding RECOs. She is later seen in an interrogation room, and then on a maintenance stand like the one on which Vontra gave her her first memory wipe.*
Upon interrogation, the unit claimed she was simply completing a task. Due to a record of compliant behavior, this appears to be some result of a glitch in its system. After another hard reset, 7134 has been returned to rotation. We will be keeping an eye from afar on 7134, but rest assured it has been reassigned where it will not be any further trouble.
*After video confirmation of another memory wipe, more drone snapshots recall back to Roz being caught with Brightbill. One photo of her is zoomed in and refined with AI, and…though it could be a AI graphics issue…the way she’s looking back over her shoulder makes her look not to differently from an escaped convict.*
If any further incidents are reported, Dr. Molovo must be notified and subject must be recaptured, deactivated, and destroyed.
No exceptions.

A quick snapshot of the couple is taken and immediately dispatched to Gossip Girl.
Meanwhile, a new student with pink hair named Sakura navigates the bustling corridors in her school uniform. She looks around nervously, trying to find her classroom. Having just moved to town, she's heard that making it in New York means the world takes notice. East Blue High offered her a scholarship, known for nurturing creative talents like hers. Plus, she's heard rumors about a celebrity couple attending. Witnessing the chaos around Zoro's SUV arrival confirms that famous kids operate differently here. Maybe she should aim to join that elite circle and make connections, but where does she even begin?
Lost in her thoughts, Sakura accidentally bumps into someone, sending her books sprawling onto the floor. "Oh, sorry," she apologizes, quickly bending down to gather them. "No worries," comes the reply. Looking up, she meets the gaze of a girl with long black hair in the same black and white uniform. "Um, hello," Sakura offers with a shy smile.
"New here?" the girl asks kindly. Sakura nods, and the girl reaches down to help her up, assisting with her scattered belongings. "I'm Keiko," she introduces herself warmly. Sakura returns the grin. "Sakura. Nice to meet you." From that moment, the two strike up a conversation and quickly form a connection.
During lunchtime at East Blue High, the cafeteria buzzed with conversations and laughter. Zoro and his circle of friends had commandeered a corner table, their animated discussion veering between school rumors and weekend plans.
"So, did you hear what Sesshomaru said to Terra about Griffith?" Grimmjow leaned in, a mischievous grin playing on his lips.
Zoro scoffed, shaking his head. "Man, that guy just can't stay out of trouble."
"Yeah, and did you see the look on his face when he saw you with Sanji?" Natsu chimed in, nudging Zoro playfully.
Sanji smirked, leaning back comfortably. "Probably realizing he's no longer the center of attention around here."
As they bantered, Keiko approached with Sakura in tow, her eyes scanning the room nervously. "Hey guys," she greeted tentatively, catching their attention.
"Keiko! What's up?" Zoro greeted warmly, pulling out a chair for her. He glanced at Sakura, offering a friendly smile. "And who's your friend?"
Keiko beamed, introducing Sakura to the group. "This is Sakura. She's new here, just moved from the city. Thought I'd show her around."
Sasuke, ever the observant one, couldn't help but glance at Sakura with curiosity. His gaze didn't go unnoticed by Grimmjow, who nudged him with a knowing smirk. "Hey, Sasuke, like what you see?"
Sasuke rolled his eyes, a faint blush touching his cheeks. "Shut up, Grimmjow."

Sanji chuckled, leaning over to look at the message. "Looks like trouble's brewing, huh?"
Grimmjow smirked, cracking his knuckles in anticipation. "You know what this means, right?"
