Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.
Today: Benjamin Bathurst: How to Become an Enduring Mystery in Just 10 Seconds
Welcome to Weird Wednesday! Today we’re going to follow a guy around a corner and see him vanish forever. Sound fun? Let’s get started.
In 1809, Europe was in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. 25-year-old Benjamin Bathurst was a British diplomat sent to Austria to do diplomat things against the French that did not end well, and thus he needed to hurry home. It was thought the safest route from Vienna to London would pass through Prussia. Unfortunately for Bathurst, the route turned out to be terminally unsafe.
So why is the death of a random diplomat in dangerous territory still so famous? Because Bathurst didn’t simply die. He vanished. And according to legend (popularized by writer Charles Fort), he did it in a rather spectacular way.
Let’s join in on the night of Nov 25, 1809: Bathurst and his personal secretary, whose name is Krause, are traveling in Prussia under assumed names. Pretty wise in wartime. They stop at a post house in the town of Perleberg to get fresh horses for their carriage. They dine at the nearby White Swan Inn, and afterward Bathurst goes into a private room and writes a bunch of letters.
The new horses are ready at 9 p.m. Bathurst comes out of the inn to get into the carriage, and then Krause comes out of the inn to get into the carriage, only Bathurst is not in the carriage. Bathurst is, in fact, nowhere.
Check out the blog post for the whole story and some writing prompts, such as:
History’s mystery. What if the problem is not that you don’t see a missing man, but that you see him too much? A residual haunting is like a recording that plays over and over on the site of an emotional event. So say you’re a traveler stopping for fresh horses at a small inn, and while hanging out in the courtyard, you see a man in an expensive coat that’s a decade out of style. He walks around your carriage and then vanishes. When you run shrieking to the inn, the staff says, Oh, yeah, that’s Bathurst. His ghost shows up once in a while to disappear and we still don’t know what the hell happened to him. How maddening would it be to watch the vanishing over and over, and still not have a clue about where he went?

On this day:
THE BAFFLING BENJAMIN BATHURST
On November 25, 1809, Benjamin Bathurst, secret British envoy to the royal court of Austria, traveling incognito as a wealthy merchant, went out into the street where his coach was being prepared to leave, walked around the front of the horses, and vanished into oblivion, never to be seen again. The incident took place as the obsessed Napoleon Bonaparte was conquering Europe with military force. Bathurst, immersed in diplomatic espionage, was gathering allies to oppose the self-crowned French emperor.
Anxiety had Bathurst carrying two pistols, his valet and secretary armed, and more guns stashed in his carriage in case of attack. Upon arriving in Perleberg, he went to the local garrison and pleaded for armed guards before entering the White Swan Inn for something to eat. The envoy was noticeable in his sable overcoat with its violet velvet lining and large diamond stickpin. A woman guest at the inn later commented that he was extremely nervous and unable to drink his tea without the cup shaking and tea spilling.
Lanterns provided only dim street lighting as Bathurst left the building. The hostler was finishing up with the horses, and the valet was loading baggage at the rear of the coach. The secretary was standing in the inn doorway, and soldiers were stationed at each end of the street. Bathurst was observed to have walked around the head of the horses, and that was the last anyone ever saw of him. The valet and secretary saw only each other as they circled the carriage. The secretary swore Bathurst did not return to the inn, and the soldiers had let no one pass. All of Perleberg was immediately searched, but no trace of the envoy was ever found.

The post Ganz Germanien? – Nein! Decorative Sunday
This week we are showcasing plates from another H. C. Perleberg publication, who was responsible for Modern Fabrics, which we posted about early last month. In that post, we mentioned Perleberg’s work on American Indian Designs, a two part series with material collected and introduced by Inez B. Westlake, a New Mexico based artist and designer. We are in possession of Series I, containing thirty-six lithographic plates printed and published by Mr. Perleberg in New York in 1925. Sixteen of the plates are hand colored. I found in my research that the plates that received color varied, for example an article showcasing Native American Art at The Met’s Watson Library shows a colored eleventh plate, while the same plate in our copy remains uncolored.
When I first came across this collection of plates, I was immediately reminded of Pueblo American Pottery, which we featured for Decorative Sunday several weeks ago. As it turns out, Westlake relied heavily on the expertise of that book’s artist and author, Kenneth M. Chapman. However, in comparing the two works, there is a notable precision to the images of Pueblo American Pottery, while American Indian Designs evokes a craftier, handmade aesthetic. Some of that may be attributed to the relative skill of the lithographers (with C. Szwedzicki printing the former). Westlake’s introduction indicates that it might be a deliberate design choice, writing: “There is a soft irregularity in their line which is very artistic. No two parts are exactly alike, but all are painted free-hand. Copies of designs on the jars and bowls often lose their charm when drawn too exactly or made mathematically perfect.”
