A prompt:

Putting the phantom in phantom island. Perhaps a certain island is a gathering place for phantoms of all kinds: ghosts of the drowned from vessels lost in the area, sea monsters, wormholes through space/time, zombies, or demons. Perhaps someone has literally cursed the place, or maybe it’s the site of an evil relic or graveyard of the damned. It could even be the home port of the ghost ship Flying Dutchman.

Hello! I may have missed Wet Rat Wednesday, but I have returned for another Out of Touch Thrusday. Thank you @blackberrysummerblog for the tag!

I published the 3rd chapter of Just Some Guy and my Class fic All of me loves all you this week, so YEET, writing. Have something more of Just Some Guy. Matt's friend Sam has feelings and others have opinions on those feelings:

One person who’s also glad to see Baz is Sam of all people. “What?” Sam says, “I have eyes. Baz Pitch might be an elitist arsehole, but man, he’s fine.” “Really, Sam?” Ryan asks, surprised. I scoff. I’m not gay or anything (or so I think), but I don’t think Baz Pitch is that attractive. “You could so much better,” Arnold also says, “Baz Pitch has this weird dead looking grey skin.” “And eyes that stare into your soul,” Scott adds. “And the slicked back hair makes him look like a posh git,” Luis also says, although Baz Pitch is already a push git. “Jeez, alright, guys, I get it. Baz Pitch isn’t hot,” Sam laments. “Whatever. I hear he’s into Agatha Wellbelove, like every straight guy,” Leslie says.

Here's the thing, dear readers. We know Baz is hot, but what if he isn't? I am very much on team "Baz isn't that hot, Simon is just in love and thinks everyone swoons over him, but no, it's just him" and Sam! Now, of course, Simon and Matt won't really interact, so Matt isn't aware of Simon's extreme interest in Baz, but imagine if they did and Matt would be so confused, because "Really, Simon Snow, really?"

(Johnson: For the record, I also think Baz is hot, but it isn't relevant to the plot so my friends will never know!)

Today, I’ve got a meta question for you: is there a cool worldbuilding element you came up with, but ultimately removed or didn’t end up using? Something that didn’t fit your current setting, but you’re saving it up for later? Or just a worldbuilding concept you really want to write about?

so i’m going to take the opportunity to talk about a world thing that I think I’m going to have to cut because I don’t know that it fully fits in the world any more and I’m sad about it.

originally, Valloroth was called Araia, and it was going to be a homebrew dnd setting, so I was throwing a bunch of cool things around, and one of those things was the Gunpowder Republic. The Republic was the goblin homeland, and whilst I still have goblins in Valloroth, and will be keeping some of their stuff, I don’t think them having Access To Literal Gunpowder is going to make sense in the context of the story and world any more.

I mean I might keep it, who knows.

Goblins have so much tech, and I’ve given them a sort of Wakanda-esque situation, where, after they got out from under the boot of the Draconic Empire (during the same uprising where Mohaade ousted the occupying dracari), they pretty much closed off their borders, and have this whole hidden capital full of magitech that they keep to themselves.

Originally I’d also had them invent railroads and steam trains, but that really doesn’t fit any more and I’m sad about it. Goblin trains that only occasionally explode. What a concept!

one thing I am probably keeping is that goblins tattoo ideas on their skin. essays, schematics, designs, inventions: all of them get tattooed, and when a goblin dies, their skin is carefully removed and preserved to store the knowledge of their life. Families will have whole archives going back generations. non-goblins just hear ‘they skin their dead’ and get very backwards ideas about it, but it’s a deeply important and respected practice for them.

the other thing they have that does make an appearance in book 3 (or should do anyway) is Goblinmoot, where all the different clans meet up in a massive festival of ideas, drinking, celebration, and invention. things do explode a bit. someone usually invents something that violates multiple treaties. no-one has invented a reliable hangover cure yet. The Earthbound Leilatha and Cassyon like to show up to it; Cassyon because they’re a goblin and it’s a homecoming, Leilatha because she’s the goddess of mischief and there’s nowhere more ripe for mischief than a field full of drunk goblins.

there wasnt ever really one Singular moment that made me go 'ok im obsessed now', it just kinda gradually happened and now here we are almost a year later

So I had an imagine idea for Wednesday and it went like, you are trying to impress her even though the thought of your idea nauseated you. Most especially the wax body parts that you hung on the Christmas tree in lieu of the traditional ornaments. Feeling excited you show her the tree. "What do you think, Wednesday?" To which she looks over the tree without a flicker of interest. "You couldn't even use real body parts."

i was supposed to help him hang his signs up but he ultimately decided he wouldn’t do the workshop? he constantly looks like he has something to do and somewhere to go so i don’t blame the guy

we did end up talking for abt half an hour so i can’t rlly complain

and AAAAAAAAAAAAA im trying to be normal abt the whole thing but i truly do feel like he’s mildly pleased to talk to me when we do. i mean, he had the chance to cancel on me the day before but ultimately didn’t so that’s something

he also said he was gonna give me some candy he had laying there but ultimately ended up eating it himself (see, it’s hard to hate him when he does stuff like this). the idea of having multiple shared interests and base a whole ass conversation on it makes me want to kick my legs in the air and just pray for it not to resemble juno’s situationship with the man she’s supposed to give her unwanted baby to

i can’t remember nothing else but the fact we said goodbye with a fist bump and it was cute somehow

i just hope things stay like this, i’ve gotten rid of the constant urge of talking to him and i’m glad since, recently, when i talk to him i’m not left with a feeling of emptiness that makes me want to throw up but, a reason for my best friends to roll their eyes at me

Today: Superstition and the Sea

Sailors are superstitious. People like to say this as if they themselves are not superstitious, but we all have our less logical leanings. And of course, sailing is extremely dangerous, so it makes sense that sailors are looking for luck. Today we’re going to talk about some of the weirder and creepier sailing superstitions. So come on aboard!

Daring Death: Flowers, coffins, and ministers

Why have everything you need to host a funeral on your ship if you don’t want a funeral on your ship? Duh. For the same reason, a ship’s bell sounding on its own or even a wine glass ringing are unlucky because they sound like church bells. A possibly related superstition warns against bringing black suitcases on board, and some sailors expand this to all luggage. It might be that black bags look like body bags, but nobody’s really sure on the origin of this one.

Love wins. Ministers and flowers don’t only mean funerals. So what if you had a ship’s captain who noticed too late that some idiot brought on board the rose his sweetheart gave him, and some other sailor happens to have a degree in divinity. You can throw the rose overboard, but sailors, not so much. (At least, you’re not supposed to.) Could a ship beat its bad luck by instead using the rose and minister to stage a wedding? Sailors’ superstitions are clear about forbidding women on board, for various reasons, including misogyny and also misogyny. But maybe a couple of mates might not mind being…mates? At least long enough to go through the ceremony and cancel the bad luck. Fake marriage trope, anyone?

i don't wanna keep talking about it because i know it's annoying but i'm still so shook up over the emergency room visit and like, in theory tomorrow will be at least some resolution of it (my first appointment with a normal doctor now that the Threat is deconfirmed) but like idk it's just constantly on my mind and it's making me anxious and i hate it bc i just wanna lay in bed and cry but i can't and also everyone else probably thinks i'm insane for being so worked up over it still. knowing how things go with them and i, if i said anything about it to my parents, they'd probably mock me for it
