Romance July
A little late in posting about this, but better late than never. Like in February, I exclusively read from the romance genre during the month of July and it was just as fun as the first time. Here is my official ranking of the 15 novels I read:
15. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith
14. Set on You by Amy Lea
13. The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
12. The Hundred Loves of Juliet by Evelyn Skye
11. Mr. Wrong Number by Lynn Painter
10. Skip to the End by Molly James
9. Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake
8. Love in the Time of Serial Killers by Alicia Thompson
7. Ten Years by Pernille Hughes
6. You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle
5. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
4. Once More With Feeling by Elissa Sussman
3. We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian
2. Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon
1. Hook, Line, and Sinker by Tessa Bailey
It was really enjoyable to revisit several authors as well as take a chance on several new authors and immediately jump on several brand books upon their release. Because I am weak, I am going to squeeze in yet another month from mid-September to mid-October of all-romance reads before I read exclusively holiday books between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm already lining up my next selections!

The Little Mermaid is a literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1837 as part of a collection of fairy tales for children. The story follows the journey of a young mermaid who is willing to give up her life in the sea as a mermaid to gain a human soul.
The original story has been a subject of multiple analyses by scholars such as Jacob Bøggild and Pernille Heegaard, as well as the folklorist Maria Tatar. These analyses cover various aspects of the story, from interpreting the themes to discussing why Andersen chose to write a tragic story with a happy ending. It has been adapted to various media, including musical theatre, anime, ballet, opera, and film. There is also a statue portraying the mermaid in Copenhagen, Denmark, where the story was written and first published.
The Little Mermaid is a 1989 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 28th Disney animated feature film, it is loosely based on the 1837 Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements and produced by Musker and Howard Ashman, who also wrote the film's songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film's score. Featuring the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett, The Little Mermaid tells the story of a teenage mermaid princess named Ariel, who dreams of becoming human and falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with the sea witch, Ursula, to become human and be with him.
The Little Mermaid was released to theaters on November 17, 1989, to critical acclaim, earning praise for the animation, music, and characters. It was also a commercial success, garnering $84 million at the domestic box office during its initial release, and $235 million in total lifetime gross worldwide. Along with the major success of both Disney's 1986 animated film The Great Mouse Detective  and the 1988 Disney/Amblin live-action/animated film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Little Mermaid is given credit for breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films after some films produced by Disney were struggling. It also marked the start of the era known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song ("Under the Sea").
Opening Credits; Introduction (1.19); Background History (14.13); The Little Mermaid Plot Synopsis (15.17); Book Thoughts (21.47); Introducing a Film (58.50); The Little Mermaid (1989) Film Trailer (1:02.28); Lights, Camera, Action (1:03.49); How Many Stars (1:50.42); End Credits (1:52.10); Closing Credits (1:53.48)

+ “It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” – Maya Angelou
Diversity Matters
In a world brimming with diverse perspectives and experiences, the question that Series two #GameChangers guest and Danish educator Pernille Ripp poses resonates deeply: "Whose voice is missing, and how is that impacting our understanding of the world?" The value of diversity cannot be overstated, particularly within the context of higher education. As we strive to create a more inclusive society, it becomes imperative to explore the significance of amplifying voices and engineering change. In this blog post, we will delve into the transformative power of diversity and the role it plays in shaping our educational institutions, focusing on affirmative action initiatives that aim to foster multiculturalism.
The Impact of Diversity
Decades of research have illuminated the immense importance of diversity within organisational workplaces. Additionally, studies have revealed the inherent biases ingrained within tertiary education systems, which tend to favour socially advantaged groups, as Conrad Hughes, Director General, International School of Geneva, has described as perpetuating “cycles of privilege”. To break free from these limitations, we must recognise that diversity will not arise spontaneously; it requires intentional engineering.
Consider the fascinating experiment conducted by Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling in the early 1970s. His findings demonstrated that human beings instinctively seek out others who resemble them, unconsciously fostering patterns of segregation. However, when this inclination towards similarity is consciously disrupted, a 2018 study by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) found that
“increasing the diversity of leadership teams leads to more and better innovation and improved financial performance”,
including enhanced innovation, productivity, and creativity.
Tumblr media
Therefore, it is crucial to challenge this natural tendency towards segregation to embrace the true power of diversity. Diversity is crucial for the functioning and survival of any organism or complex adaptive system, including higher education.
The Role of Higher Education
Within the realm of higher education, universities and private institutes play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our societies. Recognising the need for change, many institutions are embracing affirmative action or diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, affirming their commitment to better represent the multicultural fabric and overall diversity of their countries. These initiatives aim to level the playing field, providing opportunities for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to access higher education.
The recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which effectively ended race-conscious admission programs at colleges like Harvard and the University of North Carolina, has sent shockwaves across the globe. This decision, made by a conservative supermajority, threatens to impede progress in fostering diversity within higher education. It is a crucial moment that demands our attention and calls for action.
Amplifying Voices: A Construct of Belonging and Identity
At the heart of diversity lies the essential task of amplifying voices. Every individual possesses a unique perspective shaped by their personal experiences, culture, and identity. By creating platforms that celebrate and elevate these diverse voices, we not only foster a sense of belonging but also promote a deeper understanding of the world within and around us.
From his "I Have a Dream" speech in August 1963, Dr Martin Luther King Jr. said,
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”
These words reverberate through time, reminding us of the dream for a future where true equality prevails.
A Call to Action
In a world striving for equality, inclusivity, and social progress, we must actively support initiatives that champion diversity. As advocates for change, we can play a role in the trade of a more inclusive society. Here are a few ways we can contribute:
Embrace Intersectionality: Recognise that diversity encompasses a wide range of identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, socioeconomic status, and more. Celebrate and uplift individuals who embody the richness of these intersections.
Support Affirmative Action: Stand with institutions that are committed to affirmative action programs, ensuring equitable access to education for our most marginalised communities. Encourage universities to continuously assess and improve their diversity initiatives.
Cultivate Inclusive Spaces: Foster environments that value and respect diverse perspectives. Encourage open dialogue, active listening, and a willingness to learn from the gift of one another. Embrace discomfort as an opportunity for growth.
Seek Representation: Encourage the inclusion of diverse voices across various platforms, from educational curricula to public discourse. Support initiatives that aim to increase representation in media, literature, and other cultural spheres.
Conclusion
Dr. King’s words and the values he espoused — those of equality, respect, justice, truth, service, nonviolence, and love — are an especially profound gift to us.
“At the centre of nonviolence stands the principle of love.”
As we reflect on Dr Martin Luther King Jr.'s powerful dream, envisioning a future where individuals are judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character, we must commit ourselves to the pursuit of diversity and inclusion. Diversity holds the key to unlocking a future where understanding, empathy, and progress thrive. By actively amplifying voices and engineering change, we can create a society that embraces the true power of diversity. Let us stand together, committed to building educational institutions that reflect the multicultural tapestry of our nations, ensuring that no voice is left unheard.
Only then can we truly triumph through permission, shaping a better world for all.

Note
I disagree with that anon that London is blue is biased towards one player- I actually think the mix of people on there have their own fave players. sorry, you can’t call a podcast bias if they’re saying Pernille is good, she is! But here’s a list of podcasts I made for a friend:
London is Blue: cons; I think the guy who “moderates” doesn’t watch enough womens football but Jessie and Abdullah are great commentators and it’s worth it just for them. Pros: they have Chelsea women specific podcasts and I think they discuss tactics in a way that you don’t get in other pods.
Chelsea Mic’d Up: They do mix the womens and mens together and the womens is not covered as much in the pod. They go in and out of both so it’s hard to just hear the womens review (which is what I want). So that’s a big downside for me. But it is a licensed official pod for Chelsea so I think it’s a good one. Bringing in someone like Andre, who covers womens football, definitely helps so I’m hoping we see more integration into the pod.
Fran Kirby’s Fight Club: Andre Carlisle- who does mic’d up- also does this one. He’s almost predominantly a womens soccer writer and I like this pod bc even though they love Fran (as the name implies) I think they do a good job of highlighting all the players. They also put episodes out very quickly after a game.
Box to Box, Two Girls Talk Balls, and Relatively Football are all general womens football pods and I recommend. I also just listed to “The Upfront” which is put on by Football Ramble- it has Flo Lloyd Hughes (Sam and Kristie’s biggest Twitter supporter lol) and is really a fun look at womens football with a focus on WSL/England.
Tumblr media
interesting perspectives- thanks first anon for the run down!! will definitely be looking into them, it’s nice that there are some good podcasts with people who know quite a bit about the women’s game

‘Probably the Best Kiss in the World’ by Pernille Hughes
This review is a bit hard for me to write because I’ve actually read this book a couple of months ago, but I didn’t have time to review it… of course I remember it (fortunately it was not that forgettable!), but the feel is somehow not the same as writing my thoughts and sentiments right away.
Let’s try, though!
