'By inspection' is one of my favourite textbook terms.
"Just look at it."
"It's not doing anything."
"Look harder."
"It's doing any–"

The Phineas and Ferb episode "Ask a Foolish Question" proves that the Dwampyverse takes place in a retrocausal universe where both the past and future impact the current state of the universe. In this essay I will-

One of the things that's been getting to me about the whole "oh just use chat gpt!" thing is like. So, at this point, I'm a graduating senior right. And I have capital S Struggled through all of my classes for my physics major, I'm terrified I'll get "caught" that I don't actually understand any of this stuff, and I'm graduating feeling like if I had just been given more breathing room, just had more TIME, I could have learned all this stuff better, I could have accomplished more. Granted, I am well aware that a lot of this is imposter syndrome or whatever, it's my therapist's favorite topic, but go with me for a second. Long post below sorry
And like, I've tried using chat for a few of my classes this year! It helped me with like. A homework problem or two. Usually because I just couldn't remember or find the equation I needed, or it connected to a topic from a previous course and the Chat answer just reminded me of it and I went and refreshed myself on my own. It certainly got a lot wrong whenever I asked it stuff, or would change it's answers midway through asking questions. And I don't think that chat is like the End of Critical Thinking or anything like that, I can see how if I got some practice using it as a tool it could just be Slightly Quicker Google, but I think my main takeaway kind of was like, this is useful, I wish I had known how to do this on my own, so how can I go and fix that?
So this isn't so much a big picture "I'm against all AI" post and more like a personal rant. Just like whenever I'm explaining a project or problem to someone and they go "oh use chat :)" I have to bite my tongue and not tell them that "oh I totally would but I'm still trying to prove to myself that I'm capable of learning and being good at these things, so I'd rather not," and that's kind of a conversation killer so i just say "oh sure ill try that" and move on.
I guess my point is like. In my opinion, chat gpt has been accepted by students at large (talking about individual students not like whatever corporation is churning out ai slop) because it saves TIME. I would argue that most people actually like learning, like to FEEL skilled, FEEL like they can solve problems, I sure do! But my main takeaway from college is that the main thing that college rewards is SPEED. /How FAST can you get this assignment done, you have 10 more to do before the end of the week! How FAST can you finish this project, C's get degrees you know! How FAST can I study for this final, I don't have time to go to office hours so I'll ask chat for a study guide! How fast can I get through it all, if I slow down, if I ask for too much help, I must be falling behind.
Maybe I'm just complaining, but I don't think it works for every student to essentially give them the choice of turn in unfinished/sloppy work, turn in work where you got the answers from a friend/chat/whatever, or don't turn it in at all. Because that's what I feel like my choices have been in my last few big classes, and I don't like what that says about my future trying to actually apply what I never got the space to learn.

I hear it's called the uncertainty principle because your level of uncertainty for one value is inversely proportional to your level of uncertainty for another value.

Strange quarks were named for having a "strangely" long lifespan. Charm quarks were named just because!
I shared that 'physics is totally not witchcraft' post with my brother who actually understands physics and I am even less convinced it isn't magic

My wobbly torus-vortex wire model
Tumblr media
I crafted this tiny wire model back in 2013. It's built of copper wire.
this shape has a very interesting handling - it wobbles, it's still merely stable, but it's still very flexible.
Back in 2013 this was how I imagined an elementary particle's coiled 'string' (partially relates to string theory).
Now look at the wobbly model when shaken:

honestly thats a good question because it isnt obivous at first but i think what you're missing is how friction and impacts work : when a bullet hits lets say your hand it might pass through it, because it exchanged some of its kinetic energy into heat and displacement of the inside of your hand (i.e. make a hole) but the interaction with your hand wasnt long enough to take all of the kinetic energy of the bullet away (it went through your hand).
So basically a way to measure how much a bullet hitting you would hurt you is how much the force responsible of taking part of the kinetic energy of the bullet away from it and transfering it to "burn and destroy your hand" energy has worked. BUT !!! that force gets stronger extremely fast as the bullet gets faster, which means that even if the ant hit your hand the amount of energy that this force will exchange is going to be extremely extremely high (in such a short amount of time that it would create a huge explosion (14% of the speed of light!!!)) so you would actually die.
By the way (as other tags pointed out) this is assuming that there is no air or anything in the way of the ant : if the ant was travelling in air the force of friction would exchange so much energy that it would already explode just with the contact of air probably. This is btw what is responsible for the light ring around images of black holes : theres lots of small dust that can orbit a black hole and these dusts can go so fast that the friction between two colliding dusts makes them incandescent which os why we see the light ring around a black hole

two moods:
-thinkin bout homestuck
-"so due to the electrons of superheavy atoms moving near the speed of light, relativistic effects cause them to have a larger mass than electrons in most other atoms! this relativistic effect leads to shifts in the energy levels of electrons, causing the subshell splitting of the 7p subshell. since two of the six 7p electrons are subject to the inert pair effect in addition to the two 7s electrons, flerovium, which has 4 valence electrons, acts like it has a full shell. similarly, oganesson might not act like it has a full shell, despite having 8 valence electrons, so it's predicted to be both solid at stp and more reactive than what you'd expect from a noble gas! so basically, in our attempts to make cursed elements with unstable compound nuclei, we've found where periodic trends fucking break. cool right?"
and then the poor person i'm yapping at has a mental breakdown.
