"Biopics of massively famous musicians are rarely very good, often because they stumble at the question of whom exactly they’re being made for. Are you making a movie for the already initiated die-hard fans yearning to see the life and times of their hero reflected back at them in exacting detail? Or is your movie a welcome mat for novices, a breezy jukebox of greatest hits aimed at cultivating new generations of fans, goosing streaming tallies and catalog sales in the process? Most musician biopics never manage to resolve this tension, in part because they’re usually also serving a third master, namely the musician’s estate, which tends to hold its own, very specific ideas about on-screen depiction.

Bob Marley: One Love, the new movie about the late reggae superstar that’s produced by Marley’s widow, Rita, along with some of his children, is a biopic that does seem to know whom it’s for, which isn’t a point in its favor. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) and stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, who does his best with the role despite not really looking or sounding much like the real Marley. (Within the past four years Ben-Adir has played Malcolm X, Barack Obama, and Bob Marley, quite the triptych of historical figures.) Lashana Lynch plays Rita and steals the film in every scene she’s in, even if the movie’s script fails to elevate her character past the archetypical suffering-yet-supportive wife of a genius.

Rather than taking a cradle-to-grave approach to Marley’s life, One Love instead focuses on a single period of Marley’s career, his self-imposed exile to England in the aftermath of the 1976 attempt on his life at his home in Kingston, during which time he recorded Exodus, the 1977 LP that marked his full breakthrough into global superstardom. The film opens with the assassination attempt, after which we’re quickly whisked to London, where the film depicts Marley writing most of Exodus’ songs in a cloying series of “eureka!” moments that tend to populate movies of this kind. Snippets of Marley’s classic “Redemption Song” surface as a recurring musical motif in the film, and in one of the last scenes, we see Marley performing the song for his awestruck family in a sappy flourish that’s also anachronistic. (By most accounts, Marley didn’t write “Redemption Song” until 1979.) Periodically we’re treated to a series of flashbacks of the singer’s earlier life, a clichéd device that this movie could have used more of: Brief forays into Marley’s conversion to Rastafarianism are surprisingly well done, and a scene of a teenage Marley and the Wailing Wailers performing “Simmer Down” at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One is the best moment in the film.

One Love is an inspirational tale about a Great Man who used music to unite the world, one that reduces one of the most consequential and complicated artists of the 20th century to a walking fount of genial aphorisms, the guy who suggested we all get together and feel all right. As such, the film indulges a decadeslong public appetite for a particular imagining of Marley that his estate now seems depressingly eager to feed. It’s been 42 years since Marley died of a rare form of melanoma at age 36, and I’m not sure there’s a musician who’s more literally iconic: Go to any commercial district in any part of the world and within minutes you’ll find an opportunity to buy something bearing Marley’s likeness. In the United States, Marley has been a staple of dorm-room walls for generations: The casual and underinformed co-optation of Marley by American bro culture has even inspired a recurring meme in which Marley’s name is erroneously affixed to an image of Jimi Hendrix.

To a certain brand of musical cynic, Marley has become the embodiment of a musician whom people own posters and T-shirts of but don’t actually listen to, which isn’t totally fair to most of the owners of those posters and T-shirts. Some of Marley’s music is still enormously popular: His 1984 greatest hits compilation Legend is currently enjoying its 820th week on the Billboard 200, a position it will likely maintain for the foreseeable future given One Love’s early, strikingly robust box-office projections. The only album that’s spent longer on the chart is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.

But in the pop-cultural imagination, Legend has completely eclipsed everything else Marley ever released. The album has sold more than 15 million copies in the United States alone, while no other Marley LP has sold even 1 million stateside. From a purely mathematical standpoint, this would indicate that for many fans, Legend is the first and only Marley album they’ll ever listen to. I’m not sure there’s another greatest hits compilation that has played such an outsize role in the public definition of an artist.

Legend is a fine little collection, but the idea that it’s some sort of one-stop synopsis of Marley’s career is absurd. For starters, 10 of its 14 tracks date from the period of 1977–80, a four-year time frame that represents the height of Marley’s global popularity but is a relatively minuscule cross section of a staggeringly prolific, nearly two-decade-long recording career. (Five of Exodus’ 10 tracks are included on Legend, which I suspect is one reason that One Love is so invested in the album’s significance.)

This period also coincides with a time when Marley’s music seemed to take a step back from revolutionary politics, a tack that may have been driven at least in part by the aforementioned assassination attempt. The Marley canonized on Legend is not the Marley who sang “I feel like bombin’ a church/ Now that you know that the preacher is lyin’ ” or who called for “burnin’ and a-lootin’ tonight … burnin’ all illusion tonight” or declared that “Rasta don’t work for no CIA.” The dominance of Legend in the U.S. is particularly striking when one considers that Marley’s highest-selling album in this country during his lifetime was 1976’s Rastaman Vibration, which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and includes such overtly political tracks as “Crazy Baldhead,” “Rat Race,” and “War.” Legend doesn’t include a single track from Rastaman Vibration, instead opting for romantic fare like “Is This Love” and “Waiting in Vain” and feel-good anthems like “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Jamming.” (For an excellent deep dive into the history and legacy of Legend, I recommend this article from the Ringer earlier this week.)

One Day’s Director Has No Regrets About the Movie’s Controversial Ending

Legend’s preeminence has helped turn Marley into the musical equivalent of a tourist destination, at which One Love is just one more cozy attraction. This is worse than a shame, because the real Bob Marley was one of the most remarkable musical talents of the 20th century. As a songwriter, he was so prolific that music seemed to pour out of him, a quality that has sometimes led to a naturalization of his gifts that veers into exoticizing primitivism. (One Love certainly partakes in this.) But rather than being some carefree savant, Marley was a fiercely disciplined and ambitious artist from the very beginning. He wrote and recorded his first single, “Judge Not,” in 1962 at the age of 16, and it remains an astonishing debut, an effortlessly catchy melody sung by a voice that sounds both nervous and supremely confident in a way that only a teenager can manage.

By the time he signed to Island Records in 1972 and began his ascent to international superstardom, Marley had already written a lifetime’s worth of great songs. He had a preternatural ear for hooks and crafted songs that were ready-made hit records, three-minute gems of perfectly crystalized musical ideas. As a singer, his indelible tenor rasp and thrillingly improvisational style were the byproducts of an extraordinarily well-honed sense of intonation and time. And during the 1970s, he fronted what might have been the best band on the face of the earth, grounded in the peerless rhythm section of drummer Carlton Barrett and bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett, the latter of whom died earlier this month at age 77. (Aston’s son and namesake, an accomplished musician in his own right, plays his father in the film.)

One Love doesn’t know how to begin exploring this artist and his art in any way that even begins to be interesting. Instead it just feeds back the same sanitized and saccharine idea of Bob Marley to the same audience who has been eating that up for generations. It’s a movie about a poster. Over the end credits of One Love, archival performance clips of Marley flash onto the screen, and for a few moments we’re treated to sounds and images that are infinitely more magnetic and thrillingly alive than anything we’ve seen over the preceding 100-ish minutes. That Bob Marley, and the extraordinary body of music he left behind, is still out there for those who go listening for it, but this movie isn’t where you’ll find him."

Chapter Two: I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)

After he got all our paperwork in order, I took a chunk of my emergency cash to take him to the mall. It was like pulling teeth. He didn’t want to spend my money, and I had to force him to get clothes and shoes. “Thad, please. You’d make this one hundred times easier if you’d tell me what you like,” I whispered. Thad shrugged. “Please. Aren’t you hungry?”

“That’s why we haven’t eaten yet?” Thad asked. I nodded.

“I’ll feed you whatever you want once you get some school clothes,” I explained.

Thad sighed and walked through the store, pulling items from the racks and counters. At the first store, he found a pair of overalls, two pairs of pants, and a handful of t-shirts on sale. We went to two or three stores before I got him something to eat. We got chicken sandwiches and french fries. I watched Thad swing his feet while sipping soda in the outdoor dining area. Without thinking, I messed up his hair. “Want another soda?” I asked. He blinked hard.

“No, thank you,” Thad whispered. As he fixed his hair, I thought he should change clothes.

“Hey, after we eat, I want you to change into some of your new clothes. Then, we can go and get you signed up at Hoover,” I explained. He nodded. “Are you still hungry?”

“No, thank you… Malcolm—. Dad,” Thad whispered. I could hear his disdain for me in his voice.

I wanted him to like me more than anything. We were fundamentally the same, so I saw no point in hating each other. I liked him despite his feelings for me because it felt like he was mine. Thad was what I needed most. He was my family.

We arrived at the high school at noon, and I sat at the table with the principal and counselor while Thad looked through the course catalog. I leaned over to look at the catalog with him and scratched my head. “Er… Uh—. What’s that? What’s HSBP?” I asked.

“Health Science and Biomedical Program. It’s open to students in advanced science placements who want a future in the medical field,” the principal answered. I nodded.

“Hey, Thad… What do you think about that, Sport?” I questioned. I reached for him, and he flinched away. “Sorry, I forgot.”

The counselor squinted at me. “Oh no, it’s nothing serious—.”

“I don’t like to be touched while I’m reading… I love my father very much,” Thad explained without looking up from the catalog. “And mhm… I think that’d be interesting. They didn’t have that program at my old school.”

He filled out the class sign-up sheet while I finished signing his enrollment forms. “Dad? What time do you have to be at work?” Thad asked.

“Eight,” I replied.

“If I took zero period, it’d give you enough time to drop me off before you go to work,” Thad replied, “Or I could take the bus—.”

“I don’t want you at the bus stop that early by yourself. I’ll take you,” I whispered.

“I can walk—.”

“I know you can, but it’s not safe for a kid your age to be outside walking before the sun’s out… And you don’t know anybody here,” I interrupted. Thad nodded. “And yeah, you can sign up for zero if that’s what you want to do.”

Thad finished his course sheet and gave it to me to sign. The counselor asked to speak to me in his office while the principal talked to Thad. “I noticed a few things, and I wanted to speak to you about Thad’s behavior—.”

“Oh, he’s not—. He’s not a troublemaker… And if you’re talking about our moment earlier, Thad’s a weird little guy. All geniuses are a little strange. I think it’s endearing that he’s got something different going on in his head,” I replied.

“Have you ever considered having him screened for—?”

I turned to see if Thad was okay by himself, and I scratched my head. “Okay… Um, sorry. So, do you think that he’s a little different? Like people aren’t gonna understand him?” I questioned. She cocked her head and chewed her lip.

“No… I um—. It isn’t about how other people feel. It’s about how Thad feels about himself and navigates his life,” she replied as she wrote the word on a notecard and the diagnosis steps.

“Okay, I’ll look into that as soon as I get some food in him,” I replied as I stared at the card. “They’re not gonna make him feel bad about himself, are they? He doesn’t need that. He’s got this horrible notion that everybody hates him. I don’t want him to feel that way. I’m working with him on his—. I’m new at this. I just—. I found out about him recently, and I like him. To me, he’s spectacular. Every parent thinks their kid is the most interesting alive, but I know Thad’s not like anyone I’ve ever known. He came around at the right time. I’ve never been happier, but I don’t—. I don’t think he likes me.”

She smiled. “It sounds like you’ve adjusted quickly to Thad,” she whispered.

The principal brought Thad to me, and we bought his P.E. uniform before heading home. I started humming a song. “What’s that?” Thad questioned.

“It’s a John Anderson song… I’ve got his CD at home if you wanna hear it. It’s um—. Nobody liked me as a kid, so I was always down on myself. Then, I listened to this song a year ago and figured I could become the kind of person I’d like to be friends with, and my life would improve because I’d like myself even if no one else did,” I explained.

“A song did all that?” Thad questioned.

“Music can be a powerful thing, Thad. Your counselor thinks you’re a little different from other kids. I agree with her,” I replied. He looked down at his shoes. “Hey, don’t do that. Different is a good thing to be. You shouldn’t ever fit in. If you’re gonna be somebody, you’ve gotta be unique. You can’t go around living in other people’s shadows… Chin up. You should be that lucky to be different.”

Thad looked away from me as he reached for my hand. I took his hand in mine. I could barely conceal my smile. “Is hating the Allens wrong?” Thad questioned.

I stopped in my tracks. “Thad, I’m not gonna pretend I’m better than what I know. I resented them, but it wasn’t their fault my life turned out the way it did. They probably would’ve loved me had I been brave enough to make myself known. Barry’s not guilty of anything but being born luckier than me,” I explained, “But then again… Look at what he’s lost. Maybe I’m lucky because I never had anything to lose.”

Thad stared at me for a long while before squeezing my hand. We walked to the old beat-up car I had and drove home. He didn’t say anything the whole ride home. I popped the CD in. And I swear I caught him tapping his foot.

He can feel it sometimes, when they look at him. The pull of the leash around his neck. The creak of leather. The clank of chains.

Good boy. Good pet.

He danced at the end of their rope for their amusement, bending to their will, obeying their Commands, no matter how much her wished to wheel and snarl and feel the crunch of their fingers splintering between his teeth. He would follow their orders. Do as he was told.

Aim. Breathe. Fire. End. Act now and feel later and later and later...

When he felt more honest, he would admit to himself that he lets them do it.

He slipped willingly into this particular noose, held still as the loop tightened around his neck. Anything to appease them. Anything to keep their interest.

He couldn't allow it to slip.

As long as he wore the hated yoke, she was safe. The little one. All laughter and mischief, trusting eyes and caring hands that pulled him back out from the darkness. He had seen their looks of poison, the knife blade gleam of threat and insinuation in their eyes.

She was a small thing. Fragile, like all hope was. A glimmer, easily snuffed by their shadow passing over her.

He stood before her, always, dancing in front, catching their eye.

He couldn't let them see her. Touch her. He wouldn't let them.

In the quiet, when the leash went slack, her happiness was everything. Her safety, paramount. He could hide the ring about his neck with high collared garments, an easy smile, a quiet laugh. When it was just the two of them, he could pretend again to be a person real and solid, sentient and full of a will of his own.

But one harsh word and a harsher glare and the leash pulled taut again, the illusion crumbling away as they brought their beast to heel. Go there. Do this. He let his mind slip away in the hot splatter of his obedience, fading with the light in his victim's eyes.

He remembered each one of them, carefully cataloged. Each moment, each face, each trembling breath, each twist of the blade, each body gone slack then another then another then another.

How many lights snuffed to protect the glitter of his chosen one? How many more must he end?

He was long past the point of redemption now, if there ever was such a thing. The collar tightened, a splintering ache. But there was no other choice for him to make.

This is the info I have found until now:

The cast of the series will be led by Sasha Cócola (Techo y comida, Los hombres de Paco) and the Serbian actress Elena Matic (Kineski zid, Bon voyage). The little that is known about the synopsis is related to its characters, since they are the ones who will give life to Jordán and Cornelia. He is not a boy and he is not a man and she is a girl whose childhood has been stolen. Well, I find it very interesting that Romancero Gitano is a source of inspiration for a series, another work of Lorca was adapted some years ago into a film, La Novia (based on the play Bodas de Sangre).

The book is composed of 18 poems: Romance de la luna, luna, Preciosa y el aire, Reyerta, Romance sonámbulo, La monja gitana, La casada infiel, Romance de la pena negra, San Miguel, San Rafael, San Gabriel, Prendimiento de Antoñito el Camborio en el camino de Sevilla, Muerte de Antoñito el Camborio, Muerto de amor, Romance del emplazado, Romance de la Guardia Civil española, Martirio de Santa Olalla, Burla de don Pedro a caballo and Thamar y Amnón.

So, maybe the stories of the characters are inspired on the poems.

It was published in 1928, so maybe the series will be set on the 1920's, although it hasn't been told any concrete period, I don't know if they will through a modern day setting.

Romancero Gitano isn't a horror book but maybe some elements of the poems like metaphors or symbolisms could be taken for some kind of magical elements (and some of the metaphors are a bit strange due to surrealism influences, although surrealism is more a thing from Poeta en Nueva York, writen between the years 1929-30, published in 1940 in Mexico). The other inspiración for the series is Gothic literature, so that would be the source of supernatural elements.

Like, the Romancero book mainly are stories (some of them tragical) about Andalusian Romani people and their culture, and also deals with the marginalization and oppresion suffered by the Romanis because of the Civil Guard (the Spanish Gendarmerie).

Taking a look at the cast for Romancero, Alba Flores is Romani. She's from the Flores family, a famous Andalusian Romani family of artists, in fact Alba's grandmother was the flamenco dancer and singer Lola Flores.

An interesting aspect from Romancero Gitano is that Lorca mixed elements from the literary movements from the early 20th century and the style of poetry from the past, like the "Romancero viejo", that is a collection of anonymous poems from oral tradition from the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages that were later published in books between the 15-16th centuries. Then there's the "Romancero nuevo", that is the total of the writen poetry of known authors since the 16th century (although it's common to focus on the poetry from the 16-17th centuries mainly).

Talking about symbolism, these are the main symbols used by Lorca in Romancero Gitano (although some of them are very common in other of his works):

• Metals (knives, anvils, rings...): the life of Romani people and death.

• Air or wind: tragedy, male eroticism aggressive and violent.

• Mirror: home and sedentary life.

• Water: (in motion) life, (at rest) stagnant passion or death.

• Well: stagnant passion or death

• Horse: unbridled passion that leads to death. It could also mean virility, wild passion or freedom.

• Moon: It is the most used by Lorca, it appears 218 times. Its symbolism depends on how it appears. If it is red it means painful death; black, simply death; big means hope; pointy, has an erotic connotation. I could also mean femininity or sensuality.

• Rooster: sacrifice and destruction of the Romani

• The Civil Guard: they represent authority, therefore symbols of destruction and death over the Romani

• Alcohol: negativity.

• Milk: the natural.

• Wicker rod: lordship, nobility, dignity and elegance of the Romani

•Color green: death. It could also represent love frustration, forbidden desire and male sexual instinct

• Color black: death.

• Color white: life, light.

• Roses: blood

• Rider: omen of death

• Fish: associated with sexuality and dawn

• Blood: sexual instinct and omen of death

I wonder if this symbols will be shown in some kind of way.

For example the symbol of the green color meaning death can be noted in the poem Romance sonámbulo, like in this case the green that is constantly used for descriving the woman or her environment means that is going to die/is dying, and she couldn't meet her lover again. Then there's other symbols like the moon that means death too and the aljibe (a water cistern) is water at rest, so it could also mean death. It could be that the woman got drown in the aljibe, and maybe the civil guards are involved or responsible for her death.

And also metals could be a death symbol, and the eyes of the woman are described as "cold silver", maybe a way of saying that her eyes are grey.

Now I'm remembering about symbolisms of Lorca's works that could be hinted in other fictions, although it's more like a theory/headcanon from a certain part of the Emdt fandom here on Tumblr, is that in El Ministerio del tiempo, Julián is the origin of the symbolism green=death. In this post there's the one in which the idea was pointed, although it points something more general, not concretely being a symbol for death, because depending on the work or the context, green can be also a symbol for life, rebeldy and desire for freedom. It might seem a little weird, but I will develop later.

Lorca's character makes his debut in the season 1 finale 1×08, La leyenda del tiempo, set on 1924 (Lorca was 26 years old in 1924, although Ángel Ruiz, the actor who plays Lorca is much older) that clearly shows references or takes themes from some of his works, like the poem Fábula y rueda de los tres amigos from Poeta en Nueva York and the poem La Leyenda del tiempo (the title of the episode comes from this poem) from the play Así que pasen cinco años , but indirectly could be a little from Romancero Gitano.

Like, firstly in the episode it's shown a special connection between Julián and Lorca through dreams, and their shared dreams of the episode depict Maite's death.

Something like the eye colors of an actor may seem something trivial, but yeah, Rodolfo Sancho's eyes are green, although sometimes it can't be appreciated well, although for example there's a close up to Julián's eyes at the end of episode 1×07 Tiempo de Venganza , and Mar Ulldemolins' eyes, the actress who plays as Maite, are also green.

Just by the end of the episode Julián tries to save Maite but he fails, and it resembles a bit the situation of the poem where the traveler is going to meet his lover, but she died and he couldn't do anything to save her. But at the end in the season 4 finale he finally saved her.

Next there's the issue of Lorca's death, and Julián is worried about and wanted to warn Lorca about his death but he didn't do it, so in season 4 he did it, although Lorca accepted his fate.

This is kind of a joke but in the first seasons Julián is the Margaery Tyrell of Emdt, like the ones who get married with them probably will die soon, in one case Renly and Joffrey (+Tommen in GOT) and then Maite and Amelia.

Between Amelia and Julián there was the thing about the fake engagement that started on episode 1×04 so Amelia's mother doesn't annoy her with trying to push her into an arranged marriage, and then what it's known from Amelia's tomb and the photos, the wedding, their daughter and Amelia's death, and in episode 8 they me their grandaughter Silvia (played by Iria del Río, who has participated in some period dramas like La catedral del mar and Las chicas del cable). Although after what happened in the following seasons, that future will never happen.

I was thinking about the Emdt showrunners Javier and Pablo Olivares. Pablo had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and the first season of Emdt was his last work (in the last previous years the Olivares brothers worked on period dramas like Isabel or Víctor Ros) and there could be some personal aspects reflected on ths series in some character plots, for example following this theme, there's no cure for ALS and there's the struggle of both brothers towards Pablo's death, from Pablo's perspective, knowing that he's going to die soon, like Amelia visiting her own tomb in the first seasons, knowing she's going to die in 5-4 years, although she didn't knew about the cause of her death (that's a thing for fan theories); Pablo and Javier facing Pablo's future death, reflected in Julián and Lorca, Julián told Lorca that he'll die and Lorca accepts it and Julián deals with it; iI would say that this also could be seen in the Amelia &Julián part, although maybe Julián isn't as much emotionaly involved into it but he cares about Amelia (Julián is more focused on Maite and maybe the thing about knowing that he will allegedly marry, have a daughter and lose someone again it'a a bit hard to process);and there's the last part of Javier mourning his brother, that could be represented in Julián's mouring over Maite's death.
