Online Gallery

I haven't had any art posted on a sales/gallery website for years. I tried quite a few of them, starting with ETSY (back when it had a pretty good reputation) and moving on to, hmm, Fineartamerica, Vango, Houzz, Artsicle, Pastelspace, Apiart . . I feel like I'm forgetting some. It was a lot, see, and every one required literally hours of time spent uploading the work, describing, pricing, tagging, etc. All of that effort got me exactly one (1) sale. So after the last one foundered and slid ignominiously into the outer darkness of internet history, I just quit doing it.

I really WOULD like to have some kind of online sales platform. I checked Saatchi the other day, and it required me to upload my photo id to join. I. ?. That doesn't feel right. I know a sales site may need a tax id number of some sort to report your sales at the end of the year. But my id? Hmm.

My current favorite online bookseller.

Vignette Bookshop is an innovative, fun, social, book discovery engine that breaths new life into book sales.

When I was a young bookseller at a Waldenbooks in Bridgeport, Ct one of my jobs was pulling mass market returns. I would go section by section pulling books on the return list, taking them to the stock room to strip the covers off, and send them back to the publisher for credit. Boxes of coverless paperbacks were stacked in the corner waiting to be taken to the compactor in the bowels of the mall. On the way to lunch, we would grab a book from one of the boxes with the returns from a particular genre section we liked. I discovered many writers by surprise this way like the wonderful espionage novels of Helen MacInnes or the urban fiction of Donald Goines.

Vignette Books captures that fun of pulling out a surprise gem from the mystery return box. The site is fun and quirky and their Meyers Briggs-like "edits" are funny and accurate.
