Intro post!!!
Tumblr media
Hi, I'm R and I'm starting this study blog to track my progress and hold myself accountable (sort of like a digital diary)
About me -
Currently enrolled in a post graduate program in data science and business analytics (started it when I was feeling lost and didn't know what to do with life but now might as well finish it with a good grade)
Preparing for an entrance exam for a master's in electrical engineering (because this is what I really want to do)
Full time job in healthcare management (and somewhat hating it) (not because it's bad but I just really want to make robots and stuff)
Other things I'm interested in or want to learn (but can't commit to right now because I only have 24 hours in a day)
Photography & Cinematography
Digital art
3D modelling and animation
Japanese
Programming (specifically ML & AI)
Pencil Sketching
Writing
Sanskrit
Indian Mythology
Reading
Astrophysics (just want to learn for the heck of it; don't really want a career in the field)
All photographs are my own unless specified otherwise.
I'm very bad at finishing things I start so that's why I'm going to document my life from now on to keep myself accountable. Wish me luck!!! 🤎

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
~Family~
Mother: Lena Driver – A soft-spoken, artistic soul who loved music, quiet mornings, and the language of flowers. She named her daughter Junia simply because of her birth-month, and because she thought the name was beautiful. She used to hum and sing the word like a song.
Father: Mark Driver – A grounded, reserved man with a good heart. He raised his children with a firm hand but deep loyalty. He now works as a coastal aviation mechanic.
Stepmother: Candace Raymond – Kind, if a little awkward, and tried hard to connect with Hope after Lena’s death. Hope keeps some distance but appreciates Candace’s patience.
Older Brother: Caleb Driver (32) – A former Army Ranger turned high school history teacher. Protective, fiercely loyal, and dryly sarcastic. He still calls her “Jude,” the only person she allows to use a nickname like that.
Step-Brother: Ezra Raymond (11) – Her stepmom’s son. A bright, sensitive kid who loves bugs, astronomy, and drawing. Hope is closer to him than anyone and often sends him “field agent kits” in the mail.
----
~Childhood name~
After her mother Lena died in a car accident when Hope was 15, the name Junia became unbearable. It echoed too much of her mother’s voice. She quietly asked her teachers and friends to start calling her by her middle name, Hope. It wasn’t a dramatic change—it just felt easier to breathe. Only her older brother still calls her “Jude,” and even then, only when they’re alone.
~Highschool~
Hope grew up surrounded by flowers, poetry, and a mother who taught her how to notice the little things: how petals lean toward sunlight, how people’s eyes change when they lie, how grief moves like water. While in high school, Hope worked part-time at a flower shop. The structure, the meaning, the intentional beauty of flowers helped ground her through the chaos of losing her mother and adjusting to a new family dynamic. Due to her sharp wit she was able to graduate a year early with early acceptance into a science program she had her eye on.
----
Post secondary education
----
Marine Biology Diploma & MMI Research (Ages 16–18)
Hope pursued a 2-year diploma in Marine Biology at a technical college. Her interest was driven by a deep curiosity about how creatures survive hardship—especially how they adapt emotionally and socially in high-stress environments.
She landed a competitive research assistant role during her second year and worked at the Marine Mental Institute (MMI), where she spent an extra year studying animal behavior—especially trauma responses in dolphins, octopi, sea lions, and seals. She was meticulous and deeply intuitive, quickly recognized for her ability to connect behavioral data with emotional insight. But somewhere during those long observation shifts and data logs, she realized her real questions were about people.
Human Behavior: Psychology & Criminology (Ages 18–21)
Hope applied to graduate school with a growing passion for trauma psychology and behavioral profiling. She was accepted into an M.A. in Psychology program at the University of Virginia, with a concentration in abnormal psychology and criminal behavior. She supplemented her coursework with a minor in Criminology, which she completed alongside her graduate work in 4 years. She wrote her thesis on emotional compartmentalization in serial offenders—how internalized trauma maps onto violent behavior.
FBI Academy & Victim Services (Ages 21–24)
Hope’s unique background caught the attention of recruiters at Quantico. She was accepted into the FBI Academy training, where she excelled in both psychological profiling and field assessments. Upon graduation, she joined the Victim Services Division, where she offered trauma-informed care to survivors and families. Her gift wasn’t just listening—it was noticing what others missed. She could sense when someone was hiding pain under politeness or fear behind silence.
Joining the BAU (Age 24–Present)
At age 24, Hope transferred to the Behavioral Analysis Unit. Her transition was fast-tracked due to her sharp instincts, trauma expertise, and rare blend of scientific rigor and emotional sensitivity. She often approaches cases with a lens few others have—connecting dots from marine stress responses to human behavioral patterns. Her presence in the BAU is marked by calm intensity and quiet empathy. She’s the profiler who will spend an hour staring at a crime scene photo not because she’s stuck—but because she’s listening for what it’s trying to tell her.
----
Exes
----
Sam — The On-and-Off Relationship (Marine Institute)
Major: Marine Biology
Duration: Around a year, mostly during her time working at MMI
Ages: (her) 18 (him) 20
Sam and Hope’s relationship started while they were both working at the Marine Mental Institute. He was passionate about marine biology, just like her, Sam was complicated, he could be charming and fun—sometimes even impulsive—but also moody and unpredictable. Their connection was intense, fueled by their shared interests and emotionally instense moments.
The problem was that Sam struggled to communicate ,he’d shut down or lash out, which led to a lot of arguments. They broke up and got back together several times, Hope often found herself trying to keep the relationship afloat, if you could even call it that, it was more of a mutual more then friends less then lovers situation. She was willing to forgive and forget because she felt a strong bond with Sam and believed he could change. But those breaks took a toll on her mental health.
One of the hardest parts was that when Sam was distant or secretive, Hope’s trust eroded. She learned to question whether the emotional strain was worth it. She wanted stability, especially as her own career ambitions started demanding more of her time and emotional energy.
Eventually, after a particularly hard fight where Sam disappeared for a few days without explanation, Hope ended it for good. It was one of the most painful decisions she made at the time, but she knew she needed space to focus on herself and her future.
---
Owen — The First love (College)
Major: Literature
Duration: 2 years
Ages: (her) 19-21 (him) 19-21
Owen and Hope met at university through a shared class and mutual friends. Owen was studying literature, drawn to poetry and narrative, often losing himself in the works of classic authors. Hope was intrigued by his thoughtful way of looking at the world, and they bonded over late-night conversations in the campus library and coffee shops.
For Hope, Owen was the first person she ever really dated seriously, unlike her relationship with Sam who was never clearly labeled anything. Their relationship was easy in the beginning—no huge fights, just a growing connection. Owen wasn’t intense or controlling, but he was sometimes distant, wrapped up in his own head and his writing.
In his third year Owen got accepted to a prestigious literature graduate program across the country. Hope was committed to staying local, finishing up her masters. They talked about trying long-distance, but both knew deep down it would be hard.
The breakup wasn’t messy—more quiet and sad. There wasn’t a big fight or betrayal, just the recognition that their lives were moving in different directions. Owen was her first love, and the fact that it ended amicably didn’t make it any less painful. They kept in touch briefly, but as new priorities took over, the communication faded.
---
Percy — Longest and Emotionally Draining and Abusive Relationship
Duration: VSU to Very Early BAU or 3 years
Ages: (her) 22–24 (him) 25-27
Hope met Percy at a cozy local coffee shop shortly after graduating the academy and being acepted into the Victims Unit. He was a few years older, working as a researcher in a tech company—completely outside her field—but his calm, confident presence felt like a refuge from the pressure of her work.
At first, Percy was attentive and charming. But over time, his controlling tendencies emerged, slowly dulling Hope’s vibrant personality. He criticized her passion for her job, her social circle, even the way she expressed herself. Hope found herself withdrawing, hesitant to share her thoughts or emotions, especially around coworkers who began to notice the change in her—she was quieter, less animated, almost like she was disappearing.
Hope’s friends saw the warning signs and expressed concern, but Hope clung to the relationship out of fear of being alone. She convinced herself she was fine, even as Percy’s words and actions chipped away at her confidence.
The relationship was filled with a cycle of emotional manipulation and tension. Arguments were common, but Hope stayed, hoping things would improve. However, during a particularly intense fight near the end of their relationship, things escalated beyond words.
The argument exploded over years of bottled-up frustration. Percy’s anger boiled over, and in a moment of rage, he slapped Hope. The shock and pain were immediate and raw. That moment broke something inside her—what had been emotional abuse now crossed a devastating line into physical violence.
Despite the fear and confusion, Hope knew she couldn’t stay. The slap was the catalyst she needed to finally leave. The breakup was messy and painful, marked by anger, tears, and hard truths. But it was also a turning point for Hope, forcing her to reclaim her sense of self and prioritize her safety and well-being.
With the support of friends and coworkers who had noticed her struggles, Hope began to heal. The experience left lasting scars but also taught her the importance of boundaries, self-respect, and the strength to walk away from even the hardest situations.

Quotes from criminal minds said by Spencer, directed at Hope.
“The number of pathogens passed during a handshake is staggering. It’s actually safer to kiss.”
“No, no, not at all. I’m just trying to figure out if this feeling I have is ever gonna go away.”
“Hey, Morgan? Has there ever been a girl that you wanted to be with for, you know, more than just one night?”

Note
I saw your post about tell me what time it is and what youre thinking abt. No idea if that meant asks or not. But anyways
It's only noon and I'm fuckijg tired. Thinking abt dropping out. Thinking abt quitting so much rn. Thinking abt getting a GED and getting the fuck out of this school. I'm so tired. I don't give a shit about my grades why does everyone else. I literally just need to pass I'm going to art school? I don't need to get anything above a 75% in my classes in my own personal opinion. I wouldn't be considering dropping out if the week of school I missed didn't fuck up my entire term. I don't give a fuck about high school okay I'm young I get that but I am fully capable of making my own decisions and suffering the consequences. Being my age is about learning from your mistakes and being able to absorb that info its not about making perfect choices and doing everything just right for your 30-year old self. I'm so tired of school pushing the narrative that you need to make all your major life decisions right now and they Cannot Be Wrong how Dare you be Unsure about your Massive Life Choices.
If you follow my blog then you know that I permanently feel weary and 100% done with everything so I can relate to your message. Your words tell me that you feel overwhelmed and frustrated with high school. Yeah, high school is a total drag but at the risk of alienating you, I would strongly encourage you to persist and ultimately, graduate. I think education is the ultimate investment in yourself; one, no one can take away from you.
I have several degrees and all of them have involved suffering through pointless courses.
In high school, I spent a year of my life learning about the succession of a sand dune in biology. I'm a hit at beach parties.
In my undergrad in chemistry, I had to take a philosophy course where we spent four fucking months proving that a table was a chair. Every lecture, I fervently longed for the grave.
In grad school for chemistry, I had to take a photochemistry course where I learned about bilirubin in excruciating detail. I was an inorganic chemist and didn't give a shit about babies turning yellow.
But nothing will ever top the pointlessness of a course during my MLIS degree (ie. library school) where I spent four miserable months studying the implicit and tacit knowledge processes in the movie, Working Girl. Solidified millennial lust for death as my core personality.
During my data science program, I spent four months studying quality function deployment, a management technique that originated in a 1970s Japanese shipyard site. I can't even make this up.
I didn't provide these random examples to say, I suffered and so should you. More, I understand how meaningless education can seem at the time but you've got this! And as trite as this sounds, I took a skill, a process, or way of thinking from every course listed above. I can't express how irritated I was when I sketched out a house of quality (part of quality function deployment) before I created a prompt design course last year. XD
Perhaps my mutuals will add some words of encouragement to this post.

actually, reblogging that post about not looking down on community college makes me want to talk about my experiences and career to show like look. you don't have to do what your high school guidance counselor said was best
at 19 (august birthday), i went straight from high school to a four year college. i did really well academically but my mental health was BAD and after two years admin insisted i leave to receive treatment. straight up would not let me be at school anymore (undiagnosed bipolar is a bitch)
at 21 i dropped out and worked for $7.25/hr at starbucks and also got mental health treatment (and meds!!!). at 22 i went back to school at community college part time and knocked out some gen eds (and also a couple classes just for fun, like theater)
at 24 i went to a different 4 year school. i changed my major (to psych), did three years there and graduated with an excellent gpa and extensive research experience (i busted my ass there, and since i took time off to get healthy, it went a lot better!). since i'd knocked out most of my gen eds, i got to concentrate on classes i cared about. my last year i was a part time student and worked as a paid research assistant more extensively, and did a honors thesis. i also taught myself the basics of programming my last year
i graduated at 26 and got my first programming and data science job (in fintech, blegh). it was terrible. my degree was largely unrelated and they didn't give me any training. they also expected constant unpaid overtime. i was just trying to hang in there and make enough to pay my rent. i actually was struggling so much i almost got fired. i had something of a nervous breakdown but stayed there long enough (18 months) to get a better job in the same field
at 28 i went back to the tech side of public mental health health (yay! and my degree is sorta relevant again). i worked for government. their tech stack was...less than corporate, and i was pretty bored. but i did really well there since i was overqualified! but they wouldn't promote me because i had the "wrong" degree :(
i was planning to leave that job because of no upward mobility when i was invited to apply for my current job, which is the head of data science for a public mental health lab at a public ivy university. they had heard of me from my boss's boss at my government job (networking!). i got that job just before i turned 30. my first year there was really stressful because of the neglect of my predecessor. i had another nervous breakdown. but this job was cool about my mental health and gave me a paid leave and i was able to fully recover and come back and thrive. i love what i do now and at 31, i'm getting a significant promotion from where i was when i started here!
the point of all of this is, i did a lot of things people think are "wrong". i took gap years, i dropped out, i changed my major, i went to community college, i had the "wrong" major, i had to take mental health leaves, etc etc. but i'm still successful and happy with my career! when i was working at starbucks and sleeping on a friend's air mattress i thought i'd be there forever. you never know what might happen in the future (good or bad).
if you can avoid having 3(!) nervous breakdowns in a decade that's better than i've done. but listen: i've failed. i've fucked up. i've been kicked out of school and almost fired and i've come back from it! i had to go on a mental health leave from my current job and they are still really happy with everything i've done there (now i'm just working on doing it in a way that's more sustainable). you don't have to be a perfect person to do well.
and seriously, community college saves a ton of $$$ and no one has ever cared i knocked out my gen eds there. you don't have to follow the "traditional" path, you just need to find something that works for you!

I only have an 18 percent chance of getting into a PhD program, according to the actual funding website. And I lose my health insurance on my birthday this month so I need to get a job or unemployment benefits. I have a linguistics degree and a translation degree, which I expect to graduate from with a 1st.
I applied as an in-house translator, freelance translator, subtitler (my actual specialisation), localisation tester, localisation editor, localisation specialist, linguist, post-editor (which doesn't pay), project manager (something I'm bad at but is urgently needed). I applied to the EU and WIPO. I applied for junior/entry level and expert jobs.
I then branched out to research assistant, science communication, copywriting, copyediting, international guest relation and tourism, airport jobs (where I'm not allowed to work because I'm too fat according to their application website), language tutoring and publishing.
Now I'm applying to be a secretary, call center agent, receptionist, bookie, croupier, cashier, video editor, data typist, case worker for immigration, and person standing outside trying to get people to sign human rights petitions. A lot of jobs I applied for require standing for long periods of time or heavy lifting which I can't do because of my joints but I'd have to accept anyway.
I have lost count of how many jobs I applied for this year but it was 40 just in the last two days alone. I applied for jobs all over the country, then in the entire EU, then in other countries I think I could potentially get a visa for. Jobs I'm qualified for, overqualified for, underqualified for.
I landed exactly 1 interview this year and it was unsuccessful. From the other companies I either got rejections or never heard back from at all.

Machine learning and the microscope

Machine learning and the microscope
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With recent advances in imaging, genomics and other technologies, the life sciences are awash in data. If a biologist is studying cells taken from the brain tissue of Alzheimer’s patients, for example, there could be any number of characteristics they want to investigate — a cell’s type, the genes it’s expressing, its location within the tissue, or more. However, while cells can now be probed experimentally using different kinds of measurements simultaneously, when it comes to analyzing the data, scientists usually can only work with one type of measurement at a time.
Working with “multimodal” data, as it’s called, requires new computational tools, which is where Xinyi Zhang comes in.
The fourth-year MIT PhD student is bridging machine learning and biology to understand fundamental biological principles, especially in areas where conventional methods have hit limitations. Working in the lab of MIT Professor Caroline Uhler in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society, and collaborating with researchers at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center at the Broad Institute and elsewhere, Zhang has led multiple efforts to build computational frameworks and principles for understanding the regulatory mechanisms of cells.
“All of these are small steps toward the end goal of trying to answer how cells work, how tissues and organs work, why they have disease, and why they can sometimes be cured and sometimes not,” Zhang says.
The activities Zhang pursues in her down time are no less ambitious. The list of hobbies she has taken up at the Institute include sailing, skiing, ice skating, rock climbing, performing with MIT’s Concert Choir, and flying single-engine planes. (She earned her pilot’s license in November 2022.)
“I guess I like to go to places I’ve never been and do things I haven’t done before,” she says with signature understatement.
Uhler, her advisor, says that Zhang’s quiet humility leads to a surprise “in every conversation.”
“Every time, you learn something like, ‘Okay, so now she’s learning to fly,’” Uhler says. “It’s just amazing. Anything she does, she does for the right reasons. She wants to be good at the things she cares about, which I think is really exciting.”
Zhang first became interested in biology as a high school student in Hangzhou, China. She liked that her teachers couldn’t answer her questions in biology class, which led her to see it as the “most interesting” topic to study.
Her interest in biology eventually turned into an interest in bioengineering. After her parents, who were middle school teachers, suggested studying in the United States, she majored in the latter alongside electrical engineering and computer science as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley.
Zhang was ready to dive straight into MIT’s EECS PhD program after graduating in 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed her first year. Despite that, in December 2022, she, Uhler, and two other co-authors published a paper in Nature Communications.
The groundwork for the paper was laid by Xiao Wang, one of the co-authors. She had previously done work with the Broad Institute in developing a form of spatial cell analysis that combined multiple forms of cell imaging and gene expression for the same cell while also mapping out the cell’s place in the tissue sample it came from — something that had never been done before.
This innovation had many potential applications, including enabling new ways of tracking the progression of various diseases, but there was no way to analyze all the multimodal data the method produced. In came Zhang, who became interested in designing a computational method that could.
The team focused on chromatin staining as their imaging method of choice, which is relatively cheap but still reveals a great deal of information about cells. The next step was integrating the spatial analysis techniques developed by Wang, and to do that, Zhang began designing an autoencoder.
Autoencoders are a type of neural network that typically encodes and shrinks large amounts of high-dimensional data, then expand the transformed data back to its original size. In this case, Zhang’s autoencoder did the reverse, taking the input data and making it higher-dimensional. This allowed them to combine data from different animals and remove technical variations that were not due to meaningful biological differences.
In the paper, they used this technology, abbreviated as STACI, to identify how cells and tissues reveal the progression of Alzheimer’s disease when observed under a number of spatial and imaging techniques. The model can also be used to analyze any number of diseases, Zhang says.
Given unlimited time and resources, her dream would be to build a fully complete model of human life. Unfortunately, both time and resources are limited. Her ambition isn’t, however, and she says she wants to keep applying her skills to solve the “most challenging questions that we don’t have the tools to answer.”
She’s currently working on wrapping up a couple of projects, one focused on studying neurodegeneration by analyzing frontal cortex imaging and another on predicting protein images from protein sequences and chromatin imaging.
“There are still many unanswered questions,” she says. “I want to pick questions that are biologically meaningful, that help us understand things we didn’t know before.”
