Why 24V LED strip is better than 12V? Why you can’t connect long LED strips to the power supply?

Introduction I noticed that my LED strip samples have different base thicknesses. Most samples are thin and bend easily; some are thick and hold their shape well after bending. I found only one metal in the strip base. The copper conductors transmit the power along the tape to all the LEDs. I thought that the inner conductors' different thicknesses meant different electrical characteristics. Aha! There's a lot to study here!

Next, I'm talking about regular strips no more than 1/2" wide with constant voltage.

Why are the conductors in the strip important? Many types of LED strips are high power to generate a lot of light (shine brightly). The more power, the more current. The conductors must be thicker and wider (cross-sectional area) to allow more current flow. Power losses will appear in the conductor, and that conductor will heat up if that area is not large enough. So less electricity will reach the far-end LEDs, and they will shine less. If the LEDs emit light with different intensities depending on their location — it is a bad strip.

So. The current through LED strip conductors depends on the power of that strip and can be up to 0.5 Amps for each foot of strip (8 Amps (!!) for a 16-foot (5 meters) strip).

My samples in the power consumption measurement experiment :

Test bench and measuring instruments The resistance of a conductor is measured with a milli-(micro)ohmmeter usually. I don't have such a device, but I took measurements using this device's method. I mean the 4-wire method (Kelvin method). I measured the current through the conductor to be measured (as well as through the ammeter wires), also the voltage on that conductor at the beginning of the strip (not at the power supply output!!!! This is important!).

The resistance of the wires from the power supply and the ammeter (on the contacts of the LED strip) is excluded in this way of measurement.

The resistance of the voltmeter wires is unimportant because the voltmeter has a considerable internal resistance (usually mega ohms).

The voltage is measured with a Greenlee DM-65 multimeter (accuracy for 0.5V DC = 0.9%).

Current is measured with a Greenlee 93–606 multimeter (accuracy for DC < 10A ~ 2.5%).

Power supply — RIDEN RD6024 precision power supply (I bought this power supply on Aliexpress and looked through many positive reviews on the Internet).

Next, a simple calculation.

I multiplied the operating current of the LED strip and the internal conductor resistance. That's how I calculated the voltage reduction for a 16-foot strip. The LED chip section will not get 24 volts through 16 feet, but 24 volts minus the voltage reduction on the internal conductors.

20% or more is terrible, I think. Guys, and that's for LED tape that is only 16 feet long!

And here's the calculation for 32 feet. Just double the length.

47% !!! Half of the electricity is lost!

Conclusions

Professional installers always connect LED strips no longer than 16 feet (5 meters) to the power supply. Otherwise, the voltage drop on the internal conductor is too significant. A large voltage drop is a large drop in light output on the far segments. LED strips more extended than 16 feet are connected in parallel pieces to the power source/s through thick copper wires to each piece.

Cheap, low-quality LED strips cannot even be connected in 16-foot sections. Such strips have thin internal conductors with a significant reduction in power supply. Bad manufacturers skimp on the thickness of the inner conductors of their strips and create problems for customers.

The 24V power supply voltage is much better for high-power bright LED strips. More voltage, less current. Less current, less voltage drop on a long strip. The manufacturer must use thick internal conductors for high-power LED strips of 12V (and even more so 5V!). Such strips will be expensive and hard to install. For example. Imaginary LED strips have the same power and internal conductors as my samples but with a voltage of 12V. The drop in supply voltage will be huge.

first thing you learn about piloting is that planes dont just fall out of the sky without power and basically any civilian aircraft can glide to a safe landing provided the pilot planned the flight with contingencies and always kept the plane at sufficient altitude to reach them

It was a few months later and Y/N was doing well. She was scheduled to go home within the week, if everything went well. But currently, she was back in group.

“So, we have a few people rejoining the real world in the next couple days,” Shawn posed it as a question, but had a bright smile that mirrored three lighter smiles as he looked around the circle of patients. “Chloe, Pat and Y/N, looks like our time is almost up. What are your plans?”

The smaller, mousy-haired girl wrung her fingers together as she tried to gather her thoughts, “Uhm, my foster parents are gonna come pick me up tomorrow. I really thought they wouldn’t want me after what I did. To them. To myself. That’s why I kept dragging my feet about trying to get well.” Young Chloe was actively crying now with soft sobs interrupting her answer to Shawn’s question. “But-But they came to tell me- Tell me I was getting out in a week, and they were so proud of all the work I- we’ve done. So, I’m going back with them and gonna keep working on things we did here.”

There was a light round of claps from everyone. Then Shawn turned his gaze to Pat.

The shaved-headed man ran his hands over his tattoo covered forearms and gave a light cough to clear his throat, “As everyone kinda knows, this was my third time here. Hopefully, my last. I’m getting out just in time for my-” Pat’s eyes slid over to Y/N but she only nodded in encouragement. She knew. They all had congratulated him. “-baby. Lorraine is looking ready to pop, but we still have a couple weeks for me to show I’m ready after I leave on Friday. My only plan is to keep getting better for her. For them.”

Now everyone was a little teary. When Pat had come in, he was second in not participating, right behind Y/N. His anger had been a particular issue with a few other members of group in his early days here. Since he’d been here before, and knew the drill, he wanted nothing to do with anyone or anything. He’d come such a long way.

“Great. Great to hear Pat.”

To Y/N it felt like she all eyes shifted to her right away, and she thought back to the day before, when Steve and Wanda had come to tell her the news.

      “Yes, but they should be back within the week. Just in time-” Wanda butt in, but stopped short when Steve gave her a look. She was getting ahead of herself, and looked down in a flustered smile.

      “What’s in a week guys?” asked Y/N, honestly confused.

      “Well, Doc talked with your caretakers here, and they all think you’ve made good headway,” Started Steve. “Good enough that we can keep building on it at. . . Home.”

      “Home?” Y/N timidly asked with a tint of fear in her eyes.

      With a sharp nod from Steve, Wanda came back in, “Yes. Home. The compound; with us.”

        “If that’s what you want,” Steve tacked on.

        Y/N’s timid smile widened as she vigorously nodded her head, “Yes. I want to come home.” //

The group, in their circle, smiled with Y/N’s recount of the superheroes coming and telling her the news; all a little proud to see her actual smile.

“That is great Y/N,” Shawn cut into the light cheering and congratulations. Not only was she doing well, and getting to leave, but she would go back to those who loved her. Not everyone left and went somewhere better than where they came for, but they were all happy for ex-hero. “So, you will keep up on our skills and methods we’ve worked on here?”

“Yes. I will. For me; for my family.”

Two days later, Y/N was sitting in the back of Steve’s truck with Wanda. Singing, talking and catching up. Not everything would be perfect or how it was before, but they were all going to try.

Thousands of miles away Nat, Sam and Bucky were caught up in a firefight. They had infiltrated the base, and now they needed to subdue a few extra agents to have them ready for imprisonment.

All three stumbled into a lab room, and immediately were set on edge. There was no one here. 

Bucky stomped forward towards a desk with paperwork and files strewn around, and one caught his eye; a file with Y/N’s name. Quickly, he flipped the yellowing folder open and saw images of Y/N before he knew her. Before her enhancement; crouching in the corner of a cell, covered in bruises. He winced tightly and continued on as Nat and Sam finished scoping out the room and walked to him. 

Next were papers on her enhancement, what it took to get the powers, blood and DNA testing, and a stack of newspaper clippings. On the last paper was a newspaper clipping asking where Y/N was, claims of her being powerless, being in a mental institution; all paper-clipped to a printed sheet with numbers and such and blocked letters saying ‘TERMINATE’.

“Y/N-” Bucky breathed out.

Then chaos as explosions were heard all around the building. 

They hadn’t cared if the heroes saw their plans for Y/N because they had no intentions of letting him live, let alone leave.

I just want to say that Fjord’s powerloss and return was handled in, as I see it, the best possible way.

Fjord gets to keep his warlock powers, which are cool and I think it would be sad if they were lost, AND we’re adding a level of paladin on there for extra Divine Flavor.

This is exactly what I was hoping for when Fjord lost his powers. We as the fandom might worry and speculate but the cast will see us through. I am so hype for what the future will bring us.
