Happy Pride Month y'all!
This scene from The Unstoppable Wasp (2018) #6 by @jeremywhitley & Alti Firmansyah teaches us all a very important lesson to remember:
NEVER be a homophobic asshat to your daughter! Because you might end up pissing off her girlfriend who coincidentally also happens to be a trained assassin!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shay and Ying's relationship was such a beautiful and heartwarming aspect of Unstoppable Wasp!
Tumblr media
Funnily enough, back when I used to be on Twitter, @jeremywhitley himself liked and quoted my tweet about this scene, stating the following:
"Remember: Sometimes your gay daughter's girlfriend is also a murder scientist. Just one more in a long list of good reasons not to be homophobic. Brought to you by 'The Unstoppable Wasp.'"
This book truly was a treasure and its a darn shame that it only lasted for 18-issues. I truly hope Marvel gives us more adventures with Nadia Van Dyne and the Agents of G.I.R.L. in the future!

The romance of Shay and Ying, from the Unstoppable Wasp, 2017 & 2018-present runs. Please note the canon use of “tiny gay disaster” (and Nadia’s inability to remember Matt Murdock’s name).
After joining up with the Genius In action Research Labs team founded by Nadia (daughter of Hank Pym and his first wife), Priscilla Layshayla Smith is called upon to assist in removing a miniature bomb from the base of the neck of Ying, Nadia’s best friend and fellow super-genius former prisoner of the secret “Red Room” assassin training organization/facility. Helping to devise a tool that uses tech based on the phasing abilities of the Vision, she literally reaches in and yanks out the bomb, helping to thwart the machinations of the surviving members of the Red Room’s “Science Class” and save both Ying and Nadia. Things develop from there....

Pride Month’s LGBTQ characters of the Day: Ying and Priscilla Lashaylla “Shay” Smith
Both characters have appeared in the same books so far so I will be giving them spotlight together. They were both introduced in 2017 series the Unstoppable Wasp. Shay is a young genius with interest in teleportation technology who has been recruited by the series protagonist, Nadia Van Dyne, into Genius In Action Research Labs - a project to give brilliant girls means to fully develop their potential. Ying meanwhile was Nadia’s childhood friend from the time they were both trained by the Red Room, a Russian assassin-making facility, that was sent to retrieve Nadia under the threat of having a bomb in her head detonated if she fails. With the help of Shay and other members of G.I.R.L. Ying has been saved from clutches of the Red Room and soon after the two started dating. Currently, their relationship continues in the second volume of the Unstoppable Wasp.

There are a lot of comics out there, but some just stand out head and shoulders above the pack. With “Don’t Miss This” we want to spotlight those series we think need to be on your pull list. This week, we look at what makes “Unstoppable Wasp” live up to the name as the series is back for another round and expands on the promise of its initial eight issue run.
Tumblr media
Who Is This By?
“The Unstoppable Wasp” continues to be written by  Jeremy Whitley (“Princeless- Raven: The Pirate Princess” aka @princelesscomic now with art by the duo of Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano who form Gurihiru  (various “Avatar: The Last Aribender” comics and “Gwenpool”) aka
What’s It All About?
In a continuation from the first “Unstoppable Wasp” series in 2017, the book follows Nadia van Dyne and her fellow agents of G.I.R.L.: Taina Miranda, Alexis Miranda, Priya Aggarwal, Ying, and Priscilla Lashayla “Shay” Smith, on their continuing adventures. Currently they are in a somewhat one-sided feud with a new A.I.M. and putting together a G.I.R.L.(Genius In Action Research Labs) Expo.
Tumblr media
What Makes It So Great?
“Wasp” doesn’t feel like anything else Marvel is currently publishing. “Wasp” with the Agents of G.I.R.L. reads like some fusion of shojo manga with magical (science) girls and Super Sentai. The Agents of G.I.R.L. are a diverse group of women with their own scientific specialties trying to make things better. Point to the other Marvel, or DC, books where that is the hook? Do they do superhero-y things? Sure, the main action sequence of the first issue involves them stopping an A.I.M. robbery. But we also get long sequences dedicated to Nadia and Janet going out for a night on the town and seeing a prowrestling event. The book has Nadia and her growth at the center of the book, but at the core it’s a book about sisterhood and friendships.
Tumblr media
There are general similarities between it and other team books like “Champions” or “West Coast Avengers,” and other female centered books like “All-New Wolverine”/“X-23,” but those titles all feel entrenched in the superhero mold as they deal with heroic legacies and meta level events. Nadia is herself a legacy character, but Whitley’s treatment of Hank Pym and Janet’s shadow is decidedly more on the personal, familial, level. Recent issues are dealing with Hank’s bipoloar disorder and that Nadia might have that as well. That is the kind of subject matter you wouldn’t really find in those other books. Whitley and the art teams have dealt with the cultural legacy of Hank Pym with deft hands, reminding me of how the team behind both “Avatar” series dealt with heavy subjects. Whitley’s script and Gurihiru art also do a good job of drawing a distinction between “action” and “violence,” much in the way the Ant-Man film series dose.
In an era where Marvel rather license away it’s IP to another publisher to create Young Adult/Middle Reader content and fails to have the patience for the growing importance of book trade, “Unstoppable Wasp” is this hidden spearhead to a generation of new readers. I love Laura Kinney, her recent titles are excellent, and the kind I don’t really want to give my young niece yet. Meanwhile, I happily gifted her and her brother, both the initial “Wasp” trades and that’s a series that climaxes in a empathetic discussion about the effects of domestic violence and mental health.
Tumblr media
As is the case in “Raven the Pirate Princess” writer Jeremy Whitley shows skill at writing and juggling an ensemble book. Nadia is the star of the book, but it wouldn’t be the same if her fellow Agents of G.I.R.L. weren’t as delightfully characterized. The romance between Shay and Ying running throughout both series is one of the most wholesome and positive things in comics, further documented in this post here by @ayellowbirds . Or the sibling relationship between Taina and Alexis Miranda. Whitley has a way of giving everyone not just a moment in a panel, but pages, that slowly build up until you have this vibrant cast of women.
If the phrase “Magical Science Girls” doesn’t get you to pull this book, maybe comparing it to Geoff Johns run on “Justice Society of America” – not to be confused with his run on “JSA” – will. Both series are ultimately about family, giving them potent emotional anchors as things get delightfully melodramatic. Whitley, like Johns, balances a large cast of awesome female characters in 20 page chunks that both work well as individual episodes and a serialized narrative. If you want good long running narratives with a strong supporting cast that could easily fill several special issues, read “Wasp.”
Tumblr media
I wouldn’t consider myself a fashionable person, I like monocolor Dickies T-shirts and cargo shorts. Yet, the costume design by Gurihiru makes me appreciate fashion. The art by Gurihiru in general is a key to the current series success. They give this book a manga inspired look, much in the same way that way of cartooning inspired Johanna the Mad’s work in “Fence.” Chifuyu Sasaki line work when mixed with Naoko Kawano punched in vibrant colors gives “Wasp” a look that you don’t really see at Marvel besides the work they do. Page designs are often expansive and lively without being hard to read. This is partly how the art team is able to connote the difference between action and violence. Action tends to be shown and measured by tracking it across space. Violence is all about the aftermath of quick, largely unseen, action.
While the series return is due to sales in the book market, the book as some nice back matter for those who buy it single issue. Mainly an interview an issue with a different female scientist.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
Back to School Supplemental - Geniuses In action Research Labs (G.I.R.L.)
Founded by Nadia Van Dyne, the young heroine known as the Unstoppable Wasp, the Geniuses In action Research Labs is an enterprise that endeavors to assess the Earth's greatest female scientific minds and provide them with the support and guidance needed to help them fulfill their potential.
With the aide of Edwin Jarvis, Nadia recruited several young scientists and offered them funding and a research space to continue their studies and conduct their experiments.  Dr. Barbara Morese (Mockingbird) has acted as a mentor to these young scientists and the former villains, Poundcakes and Letha were later brought on to provide security.
Thus far, there have been four principle researches working at the GIRL lab, each focusing on a different scientific discipline.  These young scientists include:
Tumblr media
Priya Aggarwal
A true prodigy in the field of theoretical botany.  Priya developed a special formula that facilities communication with plant life.  An accident caused by a saboteur caused Priya to become exposed to a gaseous form of this formula and she ended up gaining the ability to telepathically control plant life.
Tumblr media
Priscilla LaShayla Smith
Shay, as she prefers to be called, is a young technological genius who was trying to build a functioning teleportation machine.   A malfunction in her device caused an explosion that caused Shay to be thrown from the window of the apartment she shared with her father.  Fortunately, The Wasp was there to save Shay and the young woman went on to accept Nadia’s invitation to join GIRL. Whist there, Shay worked alongside Tai in creating a pair of ‘Vision Gloves’ that utilized Horton Cells to make them temporarily intangible; thus allowing for entirely non-invasive surgical procedures.
Tumblr media
Ying Liu
Ying was an orphan raised in the notorious Red Room where she befriended Nadia.  During her training at the Red Room, Ying showed a affinity and tremendous skill for biochemistry.  It was with Ying’s help that Nadia had recreated the size-changing Pym particle thus facilitating her escape.  After this escape, Ying was dispatched to retrieve her.  This ultimately offered Ying the chance to escape herself, yet her Red Room handlers had implanted a miniature bomb at the base of her skull to dissuade defection.  Nadia and Shay were able to safely remove this bomb with the use of the Vision Gloves and Ying went on to join GIRL.
Tumblr media
Taina Miranda
Taina ‘Tai’ Miranda was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age.  She applied herself to the study of engineering, robots and cybernetics.  She used these skills to provide improved accommodations to her home, including a lift for her wheelchair and a exo-suit that enabled her to play goalie for her sister’s soccer club.  Hearing about these feats, Nadia recruited Tai to GIRL and the young woman jumped at the chance at having greater resources to pursue her experiments.
Additional members of the Geniuses In action Research Labs include  Amber Silverstein, Jeanne Foucault, Justine, and Lexi Miranda.  The enterprise first appeared in the pages of The Unstoppable Wasp #2 (2017).
