College Major Headcanons:
[Extra content for The Homo Economicus in Love - noritoshi kamo x reader, cute college au]
Yuuji Itadori - Media Studies, on a full sports scholarship even though he's not too interested in sports. He doesn't show up to practice that much but carries the team in tournaments. Not really very academically inclined but everyone he meets loves him so much that he's gotten a shit ton of internships and work experience just cuz he's nice to work with. Stays on campus dorms.
Nobara Kugisaki - Fashion Merchandising (yay legally blonde). Another one who's not very academically inclined but does great at the practical aspects of the job. Gets 40% off on tuition, but has some funds from her grandma. also gets money from her fashion blog, part-time jobs at fashion mags, and manages clothing for photoshoots on a freelance basis (if she commits she commits). Saves on residence by renting with Inumaki and Panda.
Megumi Fushiguro - Computer Science with a minor in Math. Full scholarship and bursary grant by the college due to his shitty financial conditions (orphaned and destitute at a young age). Prof Gojo is his legal guardian. grew up in and stays on campus dorms.
Maki Zenin - Star Athlete, literally training for the Olympics. Her degree is in Mass Communications but she doesn't actually have to attend classes cuz the Uni wants her to focus on sports. Disowned by her family. Full sports scholarship and occasionally gets sponsored by sportswear companies. Trying to go pro.
Yuuta Okkotsu - Sociology and Anthropolgy. He enjoys talking to and meeting people and works as a part-time Journalist for local news channels to bring attention to issues like poverty. Gets a bursary grant from the uni, gets paid for and is decently recognized for his journalism work. Both Geto and Gojo want to mentor him. He talks to himself when he's alone but that's a secret.
Toge Inumaki - Architectural Design, chose this degree just for the hell of it, is a solid B+ student. Has a YouTube gaming and ASMR channel with 200k followers but is struggling to monetize it profitably. Got in on legacy admissions but gets a sports scholarship of 30% (he's pretty good at athletics)
Panda - ???
Noritoshi Kamo - Economics and Finance, specializing in Private Equity and Investment Banking. he's the heir of the Kamo Conglomerate. Full legacy admission even though he graduated valedictorian of high school and is the captain of the Archery team.
Todo Aoi - Quantum Physics. he's literally the top student of every class he takes. he keeps taking random other classes from different majors based on his whims. his genius was recognised and personally mentored by Yuki Tsukumo, but is now undergoing formal college education for the certificate even though he already knows all this and more. he spends half the day in the gym and the other half streaming Takada-chan variety clips.
Mai Zenin - Economics and Finance, her family made her take it. good at academics even though she's not super into it. legacy admission.
Momo Nishimiya - Literature and Creative Writing. She posts regularly for a gender and sexuality magazine. loves nobara's blog.
Miwa Kasumi - Computer Science with a minor in Software Engineering. She just wanted a degree that would lead to a well-paying job. Cabinet Member of the Student Council. She vouched a lot for Mechamaru/Kokichi to get disability-friendly accommodation. she struggles a bit with academics but pulls through with A- all around. Kokichi/Mechamaru helps her if she finds something particularly difficult to understand. has her own campus residence but has practically moved in with Kokichi.
Arata Nitta - Health and Medicine, focusing on Emergency Care Medicine. he TAs for Prof Shoko's classes. his sister works in college admin office. has campus residence but mostly stays in the college affilitated hospital, bit of an over-worker.
Mechamaru/ Kokichi Muta - double major in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. Another top student of his classes. Found it a bit difficult to adjust to campus life at first (not enough disability accommodation) but with Miwa's help he got around. campus dorm with Miwa.
Professors!
Gojo Satoru - graduated from top Ivy colleges, has 5 PhDs, and wrote 1000 papers and books, and is the one of the most respected physicist in the world but insists on teaching Intro-level Physics and Math. drives a Bugatti to college. highly competitive relative grading. prescribes his own books for his class. expect a problem set every day after class. gives a lot of individual attention to students tho, n is very nice in general. he'll accept a late submission if u bring him sweets. his lockscreen is prof geto?
Geto Suguru - teaches one class named Ethics, Philosophy and Law every semester. doesn't answer questions over email, only during Office Hours. great at explaining difficult concepts, his course is the one students fight to get into and say "opened their eyes". has a devoted cult of worshipping students, voted student favorite every year. his adopted daughters took a gap year to travel abroad and he talks about them in class. he always has sweets in his pockets?
Utahime Iori - teaches modules on Economics, Politics and Philosophy courses. great teacher, very clear explanations, bumps up the grading slightly (absolute grading) and is very accommodating as a prof. hates getting emails at night tho.
Shoko Ieiri - Shitty ass prof tbh but everyone takes her class cuz she gives everyone an A. teaches Surgical Anatomy. focuses on practical experience rather than theory. she has a no attendance policy and takes few very exams or assignments.
Yuki Tsukomo - Visiting Faculty, takes one super high level class Quantum Physical Theory one semester and comes back after 4 years. Independent researcher funded by the uni.

I have other Agatha All Along fics I want to write first if/when I get the time over winter break BUT while I get the appeal of professor Agatha Harkness (see below), might I present a slightly more in-the-world and (I think) fun/interesting vision of an academia AU than prof Agatha with everyone else from the whole cast turned into grad students?
Tumblr media
Agatha: visiting distinguished faculty with a 1 course load over her 1-2 year term; she’s got power by rank with absolutely no tether to the university community, and she’s paid more than most, which stirs up plenty of resentment…especially when the dept has been insisting for years that they simply don’t have the money to fund other faculty’s research projects and speaker series
Rio: chair of the board of trustees who can recite Robert’s rules of order by heart but knows just how to break them at pivotal moments for best effect; knows Agatha from way back when at Agatha’s first university job where she got denied tenure in a splashy, overly publicized case (no knows exactly what happened except Agatha, and she’s not telling—not even when every version of the story to emerge is worse and worse); even though the vote happened behind closed doors, Agatha blames Rio (after all, she wasn’t fucking the other trustees now was she? Or was she?)
Jen: tenure-track faculty whose office was stolen to give to Agatha (at Agatha’s request/demand); she’s beloved by 90% of her students (with a couple vocal critics), and shes far better at public-facing scholarship than most - you know she’s got a recognizable brand on academic twitter, and she was one of the first to monetize her substack
Alice: dept admin; had been in the department’s Ph.D. program, but a string of bad luck and family emergencies cut short her grad school experience, so she mastered out and got hired back because people in the dept liked her enough to want to keep her around; she quite enjoys Billy (see below) despite how much he annoyed her when he first started, and together they know more gossip than anyone else in the dept
Billy: undergrad major who works in the dept admin office and is besties with the all the admin staff and therefore feels himself part of the dept despite being 20-40 years younger than most of them
Lilia: executive assistant to the Dean of the college (could be to the university president, but she’s have much less reason to interact with the others then); seems scattered, still using WordPerfect, but has been there long enough to know more than you’d ever realize or even think to ask about

Okay so if we’re trying to divide the X-Men up, like A-list/B-list/C-list/D-list/everyone else X-Men, who goes where?
A-list definitely includes Storm, Wolverine, Prof X, and Magneto. Nightcrawler, too. Rogue also goes here, but I’m less sure about Gambit. Cyclops and Phoenix probably. Hank? Basically, the characters who are in every adaptation. (I’m mostly working off of XMCU, TAS, and Evo as my main points of reference for this one.)
B-list would be um. Psylocke? Magik? Kitty? Jubilee? Dazzler? Colossus, probably. The ones who are popular enough to be in some adaptations but aren’t like. Absolutely everybody knows them. We can put Gambit here.
C-list is probably the New Mutants and other similar characters. Magik is placed higher than this by virtue of being in multiple video games recently. Any character where they’re core to a long running team but not part of like. the core X-Men. Dani Moonstar/Sunspot/Monet/Blink. I might put Warren here, given that he tends to be pretty overlooked in adaptations. Not sure if Forge would be B or C list.
D-list is the characters who have a decent amount of story, but you only know them if you read X-comics. Most of the Gen X kids besides Jubes and Monet. David Alleyne , but not Sofia Mantega (she’s under “everyone else” instead).
Everybody else is all the random students, people who come in and out of teams, etc. Trinary. Triage. Literally everybody else.
I’m verrrrrrry sketchy on this, so feel free to chime in with your own ideas/suggestions.

I keep thinking I should be drawing instead of writing fanfics because at least drawing I can rationalize as practising for future portfolio pieces instead of "wasting time" on fics which will not lead me to anything but like I'm still flip flopping on whether I even want art to be my job at all because like if I feel demotivated to even draw personal pieces about characters I care about deeply how am I gonna draw stuff I don't care about. Lmao. Or is it easier to draw stuff I don't care about precisely for that reason? I don't know. I keep saying I'm going to draw things other than F-Zero fanart and I don't. I know I'm better than I was before. I know I'm improving. It doesn't feel good enough or fast enough even though I know there's no set deadlines or milestones in life besides death lmao. I feel like I'm having a midlife crisis and I haven't even hit 40. I know hobbies don't have to become monetized. I know their value is in the joy they bring you. I still feel like I'm screaming into the void while at the same time the void is also inside of me. Why am I here. What am I doing. Why did I go to postsecondary twice just to end up in the same place with nothing useful. Did I only go back for the comfort of having my path charted out for me for a while? I went to school to learn to make games but I'm just ok at coding just ok at art just ok at whatever but no studio is gonna hire someone who is just ok at everything and good at nothing lmao. And so I could go solo. But every time I think about trying to work on my pet project from there that my prof and classmates praised as meaningful I lock up and shy away like touching it will erode me or something.
Sometimes I look at Ryu and go your entire fate was decided for you but sometimes I envy that. The way his path forward is always so clear. I envy his conviction. I envy the way Andy always seems to have a handle on things. I crave Bart's advice or Ryu's steadfast support or Jack's way of making people forget their troubles. You always project a little bit of yourself into your writing but I wonder if my insecurities and desires show so plainly through the way I characterize them. I wonder if they become unrecognizable as I bend them towards what I want. Sometimes I just keep clicking between my stats page and list of fanfics page because it feels good to have a tangible record of things I've made and people who liked it even for something as meaningless as this. I've been trying to find a new job for months now and I haven't gotten anything but silence or rejection lmao. I could go back to my old job but the thought of going back to the trapped feeling I had before I went back to postsecondary and spending another 6 years there makes me want to crawl into bed and not come out. Normal people just suck it up and work why can I not do it I can do it I have done it I'm (mostly) able bodied and young and it's been months since I graduated I need to work I don't want to go back to hearing people's life stories dragged out onto recordings and legal proceedings as I lie to the lawyers' faces like not even the retail postings will get back to me which is like. I have a BSc and a Diploma and I still can't find another job lmao. All the shit I'm applying to rn is retail or admin/clerk shit and I'm like. So what did I go to school for. Lmao. I know not everyone ends up in their field but like. Lol.
I don't think I have any mental conditions besides anxiety which the psych found was not at disability level but I don't know if she was testing for like. Depression also lmao. Or is it just the struggles of job hunting in the current tough market getting to me. Sorry to dump this on my FZ blog of all places but I did mention FZ so ✌😔

Witch Hat News #4 - Lessons from the Archives
by Tata Calthrop
Tumblr media
This is an archived version of our microfiction newsletter! You can read along on our tumblr, or subscribe here.
Which archive, you may ask? Well, it's quite simple.
Our own one.
Yes, like many twenty-somethings in the creative field now, I was forged in a rather specific fire – the classic Internet pipeline of Neopets, Deviantart, Tumblr, Twitter, usually interspaced at some point with either a gender crisis or a formal diagnosis of mental illness.
You see, for a young nerdy preteen in 2010, you have two sexy choices made available to you, neither of which you will perceive until it's too late. You will choose either the path of solitude (voraciously consuming and creating content in incredible loneliness and feeling like the only person in the world who does so), or the path of the internet, where you will learn at an incredibly young age how to receive and handle a death threat. I was raised on a raw, unfiltered diet of fandom. (Sonic the Hedgehog. The world has not been kind to me.)
The fans and the hermits have a lot to teach each other. In fact, as easy as it is to make fun of – well – most people on the internet, there is something valuable to be learned from every subculture of creativity, including the horny ones.
So let me make a confession to you: I'm a fanfiction writer. I have a shameful record of 155,821 words, none of which will ever give me a scrap of credibility with anyone, including other fanfiction writers. (Heavy is the head that wears the dunce hat of Adventure/Comedy.) Hell, I've spent over a year picking away at a fancomic project. For zero dollars and no publication accolades, I have written at least five full completed novellas, which will never be published, be recognised, or prove anything except my big, fat crush on the uncle from Encanto.
My god, was it freeing.
The social pressure to monetize your art is insane. I took my first art commission before I even had my first bank account. It was my teenage dream: to be paid is to obtain credibility. The label will hang over your head like an execution hood: PROFESSIONAL. Of course, the loop never really stops; start making money and suddenly your eyes are open to how many opportunities you're missing, and how little you make compared to others, and how wide the chasm is between you and full-time creation.
(That's not to say the money and recognition aren't nice! That part I do recommend.)
But making fan content, and making friends who also make fan content, and building up a small audience of people who just want to be there for fun is incredibly liberating when you're not used to it. Get a bunch of friends who create together, join a community that makes its own memes and creates a bubble of mutual feedback and appreciation, and you start to realise: this is how they made the old tales, the oral ones before the printing press.
Here's two lessons from the archives.
Love characters. Fall in love with their vulnerable moments, their jokes, their relationship dynamics, the little unseen parts of them that you can never put in a real story because there's simply no point. Linger on the details. Develop a little crush. Project all your issues and obsess over nothing. Love your own characters, and you'll find suddenly that creating art about them changes from a chore to an act of affection. Learn what makes you fall in love with other stories, and look for the same aspects in your own.
Making art to impress a large audience will disappoint you; making art to impress a social circle of about ten interested people is how life is supposed to be lived. The early humans who painted mammoths on cave walls had no audience except themselves.
Here's a quote I like, from Prof. Henry Jenkins, Provost Professor of Communication, Journalism and Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California: "Contemporary Web culture is the traditional folk process working at lightning speed on a global scale. The difference is that our core myths now belong to corporations, rather than the folk.”
Here's another quote I like, from twitter user @FarfinFarfin: "the fastest way to improve your art is to become some sort of pervert, doesn't really matter what kind, whatever you're comfortable with".
Reviews
The Northern Caves by @nostalgebraist. The Northern Caves is a cosmic horror story about unwary scholars who delved too deep into the ancient texts, except the scholars are a group of hardcore nerds on an early 2000s fan forum for a mediocre fantasy series, and the ancient texts are fan theories about the author's baffling final novel. I know almost nothing about original fiction on Archive of Our Own, but I recognise a wonderfully online scary story when I see one. Psychological, terrifying, and twistedly fascinating reading for anyone who's ever watched an online community implode.
Songs for Girls in Love by @phemiec. PhemieC was one of my favourite musicians as a teenager, and when I got into my first relationship I rushed into the familiar arms of their love songs. They also were making, at the time, Homestuck fansongs. But when I was 15, this music made more of an impact on me than any classic musician ever could. Songs for Girls In Love has a number of fansongs mixed in, largely for things I've never consumed, but you'd never know it from their lyrical subtlety and I'm still a huge fan.
Digital Land Grab: Media corporations are stealing our cultural heritage. Can we take it back? By Henry Jenkins. Okay, okay, this one's not exactly micro or fiction of any sort. But it is the article that I quoted earlier, and Prof. Jenkins could be described as the grandfather of fanwork studies in academia. A good read about the history and creative validity of fanwork, and the ways in which corporations suppress it. I highly recommend it, even if you know nothing about fanfiction.
Your project here. Do you make art of any kind - visual, written, performed? Are you starting a project or recruiting co-creators? We want to hear from you! Email us at [email protected].
That's it for June. See you next month!

Reuters Digital News Report: Analyzing Trends in News Consumption and Monetization
Tumblr media
'The Digital News Report 2023', authored by Nic Newman (Senior Research Associate), Dr. Richard Fletcher, Dr. Kirsten Eddy, Dr. Craig T. Robertson, and Prof. Rasmus Kleis Nielsen (Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism), provides a comprehensive analysis of the rapidly evolving digital news landscape. This comprehensive report, surveying 46 markets across the globe, exposes declining levels of news engagement, eroding public trust, and substantial business pressures facing publishers. Despite some individual success stories in building online audiences and subscriptions, the report's data illustrates the fragility of these gains against economic headwinds, fragmenting audiences, and disruptive platform dynamics. Even leading brands struggle to convince consumers that their journalism is worth paying attention to, let alone paying for directly. The report highlights several concerning trends - interest in news continues to wane, fueling disengagement and selective avoidance of topics like the Ukraine war. Trust in media has fallen further across markets. And the combined impact of rising costs and falling revenues presents an extremely challenging environment for many publishers.  Continue reading at https://digitrendz.blog/digital-publishing/5624/reuters-digital-news-report-2023-analyzing-trends-in-news-consumption-and-monetization/ Read the full article
