Michael Crichton’s idea that humans are inherently selfish and will look out for their own survival vs. Andy Weir’s idea that as social creatures humans will connect with and help others, fight.

Hmmm okay I have my shitty python script most of the way there. Basically, you know those stereographic projection sculptures Henry Segerman did? The 3d printed ones?
These:

I want to do that with a lace sphere. Problem 1: map the intended shadow to a sphere.
Problem 2: project the spherical coordinates such that I can make the needlelace flat, with minimal distortion of the spherical image.
I got both of those figured out. So I can convert from the left photo below to the right photo below. Or. I can convert from a given photo to a maybe-not-too-distorted approximation of a flattened globe (I’m using an interrupted sinusoidal projection; if anyone even sees this and has suggestions for a better projection to use for this purpose, I would very much appreciate hearing about it. I got sick of reading about map projections very quickly).
The right image below would (hopefully, if I did it right) be the pattern that creates a sphere that will project the target image. It’s supposed to a tiling of abstract lotuses based on Greek pottery but. I don’t think they read very clearly. And they ended up upside down because I was checking that the coordinates were right by plotting them instead of converting them to an image. So. That’s a thing. I’ll fix it when I’m not tired of staring at my computer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It will take forever to actually make a design I’m happy with and then execute it with thread, but I at least have the ability to make my computer do the projection for me now. Still have some things to work out regarding what maximum resolution i can use for the final image, but if need be I can fuss with the arguments until it’s a doable pattern.

Holy moly a rendered drawing!? And it's Flatland!? AND it's sort of gijinka-fied?!?!?!? Crazy.
Tumblr media
Drip or drown fellas? Be honest lol.
Okay, so some design choices I wanted to point out and "explain":
A. Square does not look any different because he is peak performance. The whole thing of 2D creatures who live "water" and look like amoebas was too good to tarnish. I kept it simple, gave him some boots to help with gravitational pain n stuff on his feet, and he has glasses cuz I saw some character in the movie with them and I thought it would vibe well. He looks a little older because of them, but whatever. The nerd needs to look like a nerd.
A. Sphere I took so many liberties with. At first, I went with the most basic CEO fit I could come up with, found it boring, gave him a vest and bowtie, cut the bowtie for a normal tie and gave him rainbow suspenders, then gave him the bracelets for funsies. The most consistent thing through all the versions was the analog watch (that he probably can't read lol).
He doesn't really feel like a CEO anymore, but c'mon, in canon he's a gold sphere and the only metallic solid. He's gonna look flashy and extra. It's a given.
Tumblr media
Are you reeeally a Flatland fan if you haven't drawn or edited an image of A. Square being yeeted like a frisbee?
I feel like this is a staple, and I found this really amusing stock image that just fit so well.
Tumblr media
I made the whole Flatland species friend-shaped. As an OSC person (yes I'm working on stuff related to it give me a sec), I could not see the Flatlanders as anything more than the silly stick limbed creatures of that community.
Spacelanders are different, but that's more so because of how the book refers to them. "Spacelanders" in the book, although the context is probably just different 3D shapes, are addressed as people who have people systems who do people things. So, I designed accordingly. (Also, I did NOT want A. Sphere to look like that one Pacman TV show. I think I would have combusted before finishing if he did.)

These were some doodles I worked with for just looks purposes. The tendrils(?) on their corners are the longest ones on their bodies. Circles have them all mostly uniform cuz they're boring.
Below is a close up of A. Square, some progress photos, and the reference image of meme.

Thanks again, and have a wonderful day :)

hey guess what guys
Tumblr media
I broke 100 books bound recently!
to basically no one's surprise, 99 and 100 are volumes of The Desert Storm. I'm still only at 27 complete of the 45 I've committed to... we're working at it lol
while I would say the design for these is rather tame compared to what I put together most days now, I still overall am happy with the interior design. they're comfy to read. and doing this many copies has gotten me half-decent at rounding and backing a wide range of book thicknesses (160 pages on the low end, 644 on the high end).
Tumblr media
(clearly still not perfect even at 100 books haha, look at the mis-match on paper placement for front and back cover)
but we keep learning, and I do feel like I get better all the time and work out different quirks about things.

Um…hello! Your art is like a HUGE inspiration to me how you draw everyone is so unique, I love it! So I just wanted to ask what inspired you and your art to what it is today?
(hopefully I explained that correctly ;w;)
oh my gosh, thank you! :D :D :D I've been feeling pretty down about my art lately, so this was a super nice message to wake up to! one of the easiest traps to fall into is forgetting that other people are seeing your art without all the baggage and hangups that your brain has given it, and sometimes...they might actually like it? hmm. 🤔 (seriously though, that really is incredible to hear, thank you! 💕)
inspiration is really really hard to put into words. so I apologize if none of this makes sense! :') a lot of it comes from looking at things I like, trying to break down what it is that I like about them, and smooshing all those pieces together into some kind of amalgamated homunculus. I'll see something that uses a lot of straights vs curves, go "ooh", and then just start throwing those in there until it is fully absorbed into the gelatinous mess that is Developing An Artstyle. or I'll see some pretty soft-style shading, go "ooh", and then decide I'm not meshing with it and try something else. just, like, being open and trying different things and seeing what sticks, I guess!
overall, I would say I was mostly shaped by the Western media landscape of the early 2000s, when anime was becoming more mainstream and starting to show influence on Western cartoons; I think particular works that influenced me were Sailor Moon, Utena, the works of Takahashi Rumiko, Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond, and Bone. (there's also the French movie Princes et Princesses -- which is itself a homage to The Adventures of Prince Achmed -- which...yeah, you can basically take one look at it and see the effect it had on me.) and there are probably a lot of other things that I didn't consciously realize!
on a more philosophical level, one of my teachers once said to me that "the art that you like to look at isn't necessarily the art that you should be doing". which is something I try to hold onto! I had been trying really hard at the time to be, like, a more realistic traditional-style painter, and was getting really frustrated because that kind of art isn't fun for me to do. it wasn't until I gave myself permission to actually try out different things and not lock myself into what I thought was the kind of art I should be doing, that I realized I actually just like drawing little dudes making weird faces at each other! (I definitely still have some hangups about this, but I am getting better at it! ...I hope!)

Are there any Lady Franklin fans because I love her honestly. I admire how well-spoken she was in front of a group of men who think she's being silly and dramatic, and her speech about standing in the snow was so good! And I love how determined she is to help however she can from thousands of miles away
