Kill for Peace, Again, 1987

Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) was a poet, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist and the co-founder of the satirical rock band, The Fugs.

In 1965 Kupferberg originally wrote the song "Kill for Peace" in opposition to the Vietnam War. The song's lyrics were continually modified to reflect the current politics of war. The lyrics provided here are from a version written in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was president.

Pete Seeger would have been 99 today. Incredibly influential, both in folk music and social activism. Now that I think of, in pop music too—he popularized Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene. I took this one of him in 1969 (!) ‘Where is the love’ is een protestsong gemaakt door de Amerikaanse hiphopband Black Eyed Peas. Ze maakten het na de aanslagen op de WTC-torens op 11 september 2001 in New York. De band besloot na de aanslagen in Parijs, België, Orlando, enzovoort om een remake te maken. In het lied vragen ze zich af waar de liefde naartoe is. In het clipje zie je naast de bandleden van Black Eyed Peas verschillende grote sterren zoals Usher, Jessie J en Justin Timberlake. Ik vind het liedje erg goed door de mooie achterliggende betekenis.

Of democracy and integrity.

Not that we had a lot to begin with in politics.

Carrie Fisher saw the ascendancy of a pretender king.

A man not fit to lead nor wear the ring.

Carrie Fisher saw the Death Star.

That's what she got handed

In the movie; all is not groovy.

The Death Star is the nadir for America.

The Death Star is the death of ethics.

The Death Star is how bad his breath is.

The Death Star is only the beginning.

The Death Star is he just likes winning.

Doesn't care about the consequences.

Carrie Fisher had the vision.

She saw we were just fishing.

In a little stream, not knowing our dreams

Were about to be crushed, made to mush.

Carrie Fisher saw it all.

And if you had the foresight

To know things were going to get ugly,

Why not cash in your chips?

Is this a world we want to live in?

Where our new leader in chief always has a beef

With anyone who criticizes him?

I don't think our next President

Should be a bully or a cheat or a liar.
