April 5, and it’s now been 25 years since Allen passed away. We’re commemorating it by posting the video 1998 of the complete memorial for him held at Cathedral Church of St John the Divine. Check AllenGinsberg.Org for today’s post. We’ll post clips of it here on IG throughout the week as well. These have only just recently been transferred so the footage has never been made public till now.

It’s Patti Smith and Philip Glass’ first time sharing a stage together and they totally blew us away with “On the Cremation of Chogyam Trungpa, Vidyadhara” and “Spell”, Patti’s version of Allen’s ‘Footnote to Howl.’

Kill for Peace, Again, 1987

Tuli Kupferberg (1923-2010) was a poet, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist and the co-founder of the satirical rock band, The Fugs.

In 1965 Kupferberg originally wrote the song "Kill for Peace" in opposition to the Vietnam War. The song's lyrics were continually modified to reflect the current politics of war. The lyrics provided here are from a version written in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was president.

THE FUGS

“This band of pranksters and musicians were kings of New York protest music during the 1960s. Like proto-punk Yippies with a less destructive bent than the MC5, the Fugs (their name taken from certain obscene euphemism in the censored version of Norman Mailer’s book The Naked and the Dead) can be seen as forerunners to the early-1970s pre-punk performers like Patti Smith who mixed the personal and the political. At least one writer later noted a lyrical similarity between the Fugs and the Dead Kennedys. Founded in 1965, the Fugs went on several lengthy hiatuses and re-formed sporadically for benefits and protest concerts.”
