Recommend the Most Popular Mobile Game Engines in 2021
Tumblr media
Game engine software is a suite of tools that allows developers to access every part of a project. Game engine software can be used by individuals or a team together. Each game engine runs on a variety of languages like Python, C++. In most game engines you don’t need coding knowledge but having excellent skills will help to increase the software functionality.
Game engines like Unity have visual editors that allow Hire Unity game developers for view modification to a project in real-time. Some programs let users manually place background, characters, and icons directly on the screen.
For beginners, game engines feature a drag-and-drop logic creation tool. It is used to create events and behavior for characters and enemies. You will also find many game engines that support the creation of AR and VR games. VR takes the players into a digital world, while AR integrates game graphics with a real-world setting.
Game engines also allow monetization of games through in-app purchases and help you bring your ideas to life. Of course, the scope of your project will determine the ideal solution for you, here is the best game engine software all game app developers will find essential.
Tumblr media
1. Unity
In today’s emerging gaming industry, Unity is one of the most popular game development engines. The major benefit is a cross-platform game engine to boot with an ample collection of tutorials to help beginners get started. Plus, Unity is the best game engine for mobile game development.
2. Unreal Engine
The Unreal game engine came to light when a first-person shooter was published in 1998 developed by Epic Games. In 2005 Unreal Engine made open source software and you can download it on GitHub for free. It supports Linux, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS, and Windows, etc.
3. Solar2D
It is a 2D game development engine introduced in 2009. Game app developers used to develop 2D games for Android, iOS, and desktop as a free open source platform. Solar2D can build integrate your project with Android studio to add native features. It supports Android, iOS, and Windows.
4. SpriteKit
If you are a fan of iPhone game apps then Spritekit is one of the best options for developing Apple-based games. Apple launches it in 2013.
It supports iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS and integrates well with GameplayKit, SceneKit, and Swift.
It helps in creating virtually fascinating apps with necessary resources like physics, lightning animation with a hassle-free process
5. Marmalade SDK
Originally called Ideaworks3D Limited is a cross-platform engine that supports different devices such as Windows, iOS, and Android. It has a game asset that can be exported to other 3D modeling and animation tools like Autodesk and supports 2D game development.
6. GameMaker
It is one of the most used game engines because of no requirement of programming or coding knowledge. All you have to do is “point and click” to create games much easier and faster than coding with native languages.
Whereas like many other game engines, it is not free to use the software. It requires you to buy either the professional or Master collection versions.
7. Godot
It is one of the popular game engines that allows making both 2D and 3D game engines. It has a vast set of common tools so that game app developers can focus on making game apps without reinventing the wheel.
Godot is a free-to-use open-source with an MIT license. The good news is no royalties, no subscription fees, and no hidden strings. The game apps you develop through the Godot engine are yours.
Also, it has a community that regularly fix bugs and develop additional features. Its active community can answer even your most specific Godot-related questions.
You can find a strong Godot community on the internet HUBS, including Reddit forums, Facebook groups, steam community, the Godot forums, and more.
8. Clickteam Fusion
It is one of the most fun game engines supported by the creative team. The Fusion engine is full of graphical assets already made and used by many in the game industry. Fusion has an integrated physics engine and a great community, to boot. You can use it for all the platforms like Android, iOS, and Windows including Steam.
9. Cocos 2d-x
As the name sounds unique, it claims to be the world’s top Open-Source Game Development Platform’. Well, are they?
Of course, it is difficult to give a definitive answer if you aren’t exactly familiar with game design, or if your personal preferences favor something more in line with Godot or Unity 3D.
It is free to use an open-source with an MIT license. It provides you very prominent features with cross-platform and a simple way to be successful in the world of game development. Although it uses C++ at a time, it can be versatile and also use Java.
Tumblr media
Summary:

My Actual job Description
Well, I can say that my company’s probably on fire because my situation kinda ignited the conflict of interest between the two BoDs. Let’s just call the CEO as A and the right hand man as B when their names come up.
My job title: senior programmer (when referred to clients) and manager of IT division (internally and functionally) Started working: officially January 2020, started with a three-month probation Promotion: December 2020 (premature promotion, initially I was offered with another three-month probation starting from January 2021) Initial tasks by contract: 3D animation rigging and scripting
Actual job list under the cut, because it’s gonna be long.
My actual job list:
3D animation rigging (Jan 20 - March 20)
Python scripting to speed up humanoid rigging (Jan 20 - March 20, done voluntarily outside the contract)
3D modeling (Jan 20, outside contract and not by my own free will because I don’t want to model)
Add student names to certificate templates (February 20, outside contract and not by my own free will)
Mobile app developer using React Native (March 20 - May 20, outside initial contract but still fits my educational background, but had to handle 3 apps at once in a team of just me and a senior)
Make Python scripting tutorials (May 20 - June 20, outside ‘new’ contract, but paid by content instead of working hours and I don’t know the first thing about making tutorials)
Develop a simulation game that’s based on CodeIgniter (June 20 - November 20, 2 months deadline delay because the client kept asking for more features outside project contract and I had to work overtime to completely change the layout of the whole game in two days)
Build a donation website using Wordpress and Woocommerce (November 20 - Jan 21, overseas client and the one who appreciates me the most out of all clients and even compared to the 2 BoDs)
Update the office website’s domain and hosting (Dec 20 - Jan 21, not my area of expertise and I hadn’t a single clue about what to update and what to take out from the annual payment)
Provide the job description for a new employee under my wing and train that said employee (Dec 20)
Continue the development for the project #7 in this list (Dec 20 - March 21, my client often contacted me for work matters outside work hours and B, as the one I was responsible to, told me that it was normal because of my position as a manager)
Build various trial projects as attempts to snatch another client (March 21 - June 21, the areas were far from my own expertise, ranging from VR, AR, Codeigniter, React Native, FTP setup)
Suddenly got called to meet for a blockchain game project (June 21, the project was approved despite the company’s lack of experience in game development)
Another sudden call for another short notice project for both mobile app and website (June 21, project was approved despite the then potential blockchain game project)
Blockchain game project API (June 21 - sometime in 2023, while helping the game team to troubleshoot issues with Unity)
Android app (June 21 - December 21, initially ended in Aug but to have the contract extended until December, very demanding despite the 7-8 hours daily in contract)
Provide job description for hiring more developers in backend and game section and interview potential new recruits (Sept 21)
Check work contracts for potential new recruits (Sept 21)
Setup time for me to explain to both A and B about why projects #15 and #16 cannot run in parallel without issues (Sept 21, not yet done but I don’t even have to do this if they are smarter)
Supervise and take notes of a freelance employee’s working hours (Sept 21)
Handle technical stuff like hosting management, fixing printers, and checking office Wifi
Always on standby to be called outside of working hours and must be available to work immediately when needed
If you’re wondering why I complain when I’m supposed to be handsomely rewarded for all the overtime and out-of-contract jobs, well, because I don’t get rewarded outside my salary.
They never paid my overtime because I was mostly working from home at that time, they gave me odd jobs because ‘I was the only one who could do it’ when they could at least spend a few minutes to learn, and they have never given me or my team a bonus after finishing a project. The only ‘bonus’ would only be a praise and only a praise, because a pay rise is merely an empty promise.
I can freely use the office computer for my work, but everyone else is also free to tell me that they have urgent work to do and that they needed to use the computer. And yes, my work is halted without the computer and B has every right to complain if I don’t get my work done and they refused to buy another computer because of ‘the lack of funds’.
Both A and B are basically at war with each other because of the projects #15 and #16 and I regret that I work from home so that I couldn’t see the raging war.
Lastly, I can’t disclose the actual number of my salary, but I can at least compare it to my current living condition: 10 months worth of my salary goes to paying my annual rent. I have 2 months plus 1 month bonus and it’s barely enough for my own daily needs, let alone for me and my mom.

Technological stoicism
I would call myself a creative technologist.
Technology has always interested me since a young age and being able to visualize and most importantly, realize ideas and projects using computers has been a huge asset.
As a digital native, computers and software are second nature to me. Debugging and problem-solving is skills that developed in parallel to my normal development curve, with my technological skills deepening in width and extent.
My three brothers were a great source of information, motivation, and inspiration. But when they moved out of our family home, or when they couldn't provide me with the info I needed I had to search for knowledge and documentation myself. This quickly led me to develop high proficiency in English.
One problem I stumbled upon when I was around 9 years old was when trying to follow video tutorials during the early days of YouTube. I had just stumbled upon 3D rendering and was eager to render my version of the Death Star. The guy in the tutorial said to press control-C, but unbeknownst to me, he was from Australia. Hard for a 9-year-old to deduce.
Through trial and error, I learned all kinds of things. From discovering Google Image Search, setting up game servers for CS and GMod, pirating games, bootstrapping an internet radio station, managing our family server (which resided in a closet), creating maps of familiar places, running hoaxes on Facebook through 3D rendered "found" footage of robots, programming a matrix text-game in python, dedicating a summer to creating games in BGE, learning correct 3D modeling, learning Unity, UE4, 3Ds Max, Photoshop, AR, VR, UX, and the list goes on.
My approach to solving problems and apparent roadblocks isn't without its drawbacks though. I can be very stubborn regarding solving a particular problem because I sense a feeling of familiarity, which can be incorrect. I seldom read an extensive amount of documentation before diving head-first to solve the problem. I do what I deem necessary.
I have almost a perverse attraction to researching the best/newest/most interesting framework/engine/language for a particular problem. Albeit in the shortest, most effective time possible. This has led me to learn new things almost every week, experiences that often are interchangeable within similar paradigms or concepts.
Curiosity is a key aspect that I try to stimulate as much as possible. Mindfulness and being able to observe my sudden excursions in thought and action is another.
My biggest fear is to grow bitter in regards to tech or people. We'll see if my hypothetical medicine, curiosity, will cure this IME inevitable disease.
Hopefully.

I “LIKE” programming
Well just like this blog, when it came to the like system, I wasn’t entirely sure where to start. I had started working on this before we had decided to go with AR built in Unity so I figured I would get the mechanics working and then be able to transfer them into Unity. Initially when we were thinking of building a physical model or projection mapping, I was going to have the like button on a webpage so that anyone could access it, an inherently thats where I started. I had the thought of using a python script to build the whole back end mechanic of the system and that data would be passed from the user via the webpage, and after quickly running this by Liam (who has done something similar before) he agreed that it would be the easiest way and we could have multiple users at once which is what we wanted. I built the most basic version of the “front end” part so that someone could input their name and then like it so the likes would be attributed to them, just like it is on social media.
Tumblr media
Liam recommended using the flask module for Python to host the server (and webpage for testing). Once I had installed that I managed to get a connection between the two and even by complete fluke was getting it to receive data from multiple devices and be able to register that it was from different devices. I personally was stoked about this because it was 90% of the like system working but then Liam pointed out, as we don’t know why it worked, if it stopped working we also wouldn’t be able to pick out why. I figured it was in my best interests to learn the best practice for this rather than get the minimum working version as it would be great reference material for the future. In these early stages, Liam helped me a lot by explaining why one way was better than another and generally guiding me through which was super helpful as I was almost coming from no coding background. The main think I am super grateful for is him introducing me to JSON, which I’ll be honest was an absolute pain at first but I now realise it was definitely the best way to go as it was far more reliable and actually made sense. So essentially what was happening is that the HTML page was passing the name that was submitted by the user, to the python script every time the like button was clicked. The script would then add a new value to its own defined variable “like” and count them like that. The bonus of doing it like this is that if someone played once and then after a while came back too have another go, their “score” would compound and keep increasing. On that note though the downside is that if two users input the same name they will have a super score rather than two separate scores. While this would be a downside for an actual game where the score would need to be counted from just one game at a time and not an overall total, for our project it sort of just adds to it. The idea is that the more people “like” the disaster that happens, the more it proves our point that social media is building a screen which separates people from reality and that they can simply click a button to show their support, and the more they do that, the more they are helping? Or at least thats the theory.
Tumblr media
In the past when it has come to doing small code projects I have looked up how to do something, found code that suited my need, copied it and then tweaked it to properly fit my programme. However, this doesn’t mean I necessarily understood it which is something I wanted to do differently this time. As this was basically my main role in the team, I wanted to make sure I would be able to explain to other people how it worked rather than have a piece that worked but just because it did. Which I guess relates to this whole degree itself, nothing is really taught to us (especially in studio) and its all self directed so we need to learn the skills ourselves and in this day in age when you don’t need a computer science degree to become a developer but simply be able to copy code from different places to suit your programme, I believe it is quite important to know what you are doing because I the future it will make me far more efficient. And its the learning by doing thing that works really well for me that I like. For example when it came to having to deal with GET requests from both the server and user side, I had done something similar before with the instagram location finder programme that I had had a play with earlier in the semester, and because I had used it before I sort of knew how it worked but then I had the code itself I could look through again and figure out why it worked and what parts I could omit for this different programme. I have to say, I think this semester I have learned more about programming from simply trial and error, Liam and online tutorials than I did in all of last year where I did both programming papers. It was also great to learn this in a group setting where the other team members also are not super coding savvy as trying to explain what I was doing or why I couldn’t do something that we wanted to do due to the nature of the system that I was writing in non technical terms helped clarify what I was doing for myself. I would certainly like to keep doing more programming projects in the future to further develop my skills and learn new things.
Transferring the user side to Unity was a whole different box of frogs though. First of all Unity is all scripted in C# which I have never used before (but luckily is similar to java which I had dabbled in with processing last year) but the whole mechanic of connecting to a server is made a lot more difficult as all requests need to be sent through a Coroutine. Which I’ll be honest, I had never heard of until I stumbled across a million Stack Overflow forums that explained that that is what you have to use. I think I have got my head around them mostly but there are still some things about them that elude me, for example everywhere (including the Unity manual) it says that they end when they hit a “return”, but I have coroutines that have functions or call new functions still enclosed in the coroutine but after the return type and it still calls them (see below).
Tumblr media
They also supposedly run for their specified length (of time) regardless where they are called, i.e will run for 6 seconds if told to after being called from the Update( ) function. However, I have found that in some of my code this works, in other parts it just sort of ignores that rule and sometimes it waits for a wee while longer than the instructed time. So its not totally something that I fully understand but I know it enough to be able to use it in the right places and the majority of the function of the Unity scene is run by coroutines so I am clearly doing something right. I like to think of it as a poorly trained animal, I know the commands and the animal knows what they mean but sometimes chooses to do its own thing.
Another major challenge I had was dealing with JSON, for starters sending the exact same data as I was from the webpage but through unity, it was as if it was parson the data into JSON and then parsing the JSON into more JSON even though the commands where almost the same, so on the python side I had to update it so that it decoded the incoming JSON properly so it was then actually processed logically. This brought in a whole world of problems in itself as then the data that was being sent back to the user was all jumbled and messed up which was less than ideal as it felt I had actually gone backwards rather than made progress. But as I have learned from this project, every new error you get means that you are making progress as you have made it past the previous error. After all of that though, I did get it working.
vimeo
Once I had done all of that, I realised that it was a perfectly functioning Like system that recorded multiple user’s scores and could compound them and it was perfect, but only once. There was no way to restart it without stopping the whole application and going again. So there was the next challenge which proved a lot more difficult that initially suspected mainly due to how referencing different Game Objects is from a script and even harder, referencing the scripts of those Game Objects which is what caused me many hours of strife. To make matters more difficult as well, Unity doesn’t appreciate all the things you could normally do in a C# script so you have to find ways around its very stubborn walls which in my case lead to many, many scripts. Doesn’t sound like such a terrible thing but to make sure each was working correctly I was logging things to the debug console from almost every script so then when I wanted to look for a specific message I was sending to try and get something working, it became a whole lot harder because there were 20+ scripts that were all printing to the console. But once again, I am a champion and figured it out.
vimeo
As I write this I realise that it doesn’t sound that difficult and didn’t take that long but the code for the like system has been haunting me at night and has been an ongoing saga for weeks . I certainly have learned heaps and am happy with my process that I undertook. However, if I was to do it again knowing what I know now, I would skip out the HTML part and just go straight for the C# scrips because I think that transition was the hardest part of this whole process. In HTML (with javascript) it is easy to do everything all in on document but with C#, you can’t send data and also receive it in the same script, you need to separate them into multiple scripts which is where confusion starts manifesting as you try and think across multiple scripts and have to remember what each one is referencing and how it will then affect the other one. The issue with backend systems as well is you don’t overtly see your mistake as you would with front end because either something happens or it doesn’t and if it doesn’t you then have to comb through your code to find the broken section and find out what is messing you up. Overall I think this is what I found the most frustrating as I have only really done mainly front end development rather than back end, but this project was certainly a great insight into it. Now as for this whole project once we got on a roll, I obviously stopped blogging as I got so engrossed in the work which I do understand is not the best practice but as we were pushed for time (having left it so late to start doing something) I focused solely on getting the work done and from an outsider’s perspective the final product doesn’t really show how much work went into the programming of it, so I have uploaded all my scripts to GitHub so you can have a look at them, and also see how things work if you are interested: https://github.com/JabronusMaximus/ARcde-Scripts

ML, DL 공부 조언들
https://hackernoon.com/what-leading-artificial-intelligence-course-should-you-take-and-what-should-you-do-after-261a933bb3da
https://www.quora.com/What-should-I-do-after-completion-of-all-the-courses-in-Andrew-Ng-Deep-Learning-Specialisation-I-would-like-to-specialize-in-convolutional-neural-networks
If I were you, I would do this:
Go and watch Neural networks class - Université de Sherbrooke - YouTube.
Start reading Deep Learning Book and slowly work through the theory and practice/implement in python or (maybe Julia)
[2.5, in parallel while reading the book] Read this list of highly cited papers terryum/awesome-deep-learning-papers and try implementing those [and also follow this thread on twitter. ]
Keep up to date with Reddit’s Machine Learning • r/MachineLearning.
Start learning Linear Dynamical Systems. EE263: Introduction to Linear Dynamical Systems.
More maths!
Look at areas where deep learning can be applicable such as computer vision, speech, audio, graphics etc. Why not fuse AR+Deep learning?
Apply to research labs and programs.
Have fun.
Maybe look at differentiable programming and computational neuroscience.
It depends on where you want to go!
You mentioned that you are interested in specializing in CNNs. That’s great that you found a topic you are interested in! Are you more interested in understanding the ideas behind ML and develop new techniques how to improve them? Or do you just want to understand existing techniques and how to use them? I would advise you to choose your literature accordingly!
First case: Read about the background ideas that lead to the ML achievements we have today. For example
Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms by David J. C. MacKay
The Elements of Statistical Learning by Jerome H. Friedman, Robert Tibshirani, and Trevor Hastie
Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning by Christopher Bishop
Convex Optimization by Lieven Vandenberghe and Stephen P. Boyd
Second case: Research the newest techniques you are interested in, check out youtube videos / github repositories of the implementations and play around with them!
I want to stress that you learn more and better if you do want you like - so don’t force yourself to read a whole book! Read some chapters you are interested in, play around with some implementations, and go back to the theory. Follow your focus and try do understand the bigger picture instead of a specific architecture or other details. Good luck!
nice! if you are really interested in cnn then you should choose to learn research papers on this topic and try to implement those things, it will enrich you and there are some links you can follow.
Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition.[1]
or you can choose fast.ai · Making neural nets uncool again course by Jeromy Howard. try to improve yourself with these courses happy learning.
Footnotes
[1] CS231n Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition
https://www.quora.com/After-the-Andrew-Ng-course-on-machine-learning-can-I-start-learning-deep-learning-or-is-more-study-required
Assuming that you understand basic building blocks of ML, you could first get hands-on understanding with python (primarily utility libraries).
You can learn to use numpy, pandas, matplotlib. and try playing a bit with data manipulation.
Try a few notebooks / tutorials from github for any one of ML algorithm (I usually recommend SGD based recommendation alog but SVM will be good too, though a little difficult).
Once you have understanding of python good enough to be able to read code then you could head on to any of these courses:
Deep Learning | Udacity
fast.ai · Making neural nets uncool again
Both are excellent for starters.
If you like more of use-case based learning of AI then do consider signing up here -> AmpLabs - Up your game This is something i have been working on for a time saving, hands-on learning of AI.
All the best!
Andrew Ng's Coursera course is adapted from the Stanford class (CS229). Abu-Mustafa (Caltech) refers to it as a watered-down version. Even so, Ng does a great job making the topic approachable and practical.
You have two options and they're not mutually exclusive:
1. Go deeper into the algorithms: There are other ML courses out there. Many of them are quite "Mathy", and with the right preparation in Calculus/Linear Algebra/Probability, you will enjoy them. To deepen your understanding, you could go through original CS229 material, or take Caltech’s “Learning from Data” course by Abu-Mustafa. Furthermore, I suggest checking out Hinton's "Neural Networks" course, or "CS231n: Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition." These would introduce you to Deep Learning (some of which you've already covered with Ng). Caveat: DL is a rapidly moving field, and some think that the ANN class on Coursera is already dated.
2. Apply what you've learnt: Ultimately, this is what it's all about! Check out kaggle for real-world problems. Heck, you may even win a prize :-)

30 Tips to Learn Web Design in 30 Days
Is learning the basics of web design still on your “someday” list? Why haven’t you got started yet? We’ve put together 30 tips and resources to help you start learning web design this month (and maybe even find yourself a new career path!)
Graphic designers, print designers, and creatives looking to learn something new or break into website need to quit procrastinating. Every day that you don’t take that first step leaves you one day further behind everyone else!
Follow these steps to begin learning how to create your first website, industry best practices, and much more—all in 30 days!
1. Start a Website
Tumblr media
The best way to start learning web design is to start doing it. That’s the advice from David Kadavy, author of Design <for> Hackers.
I recommend you start a blog. I started a blog just to have a web design playground, and 7 years later, I launched a best-selling book on the subject. Having a personal project, such as a blog, gives you a place where you can try new things, and your boss won’t fire you if you mess up.
You don’t have to start with a massive website or crazy design; start small. Play with the website, figure out what makes things work. (And make sure to inspect the code, so you can start getting familiar with what’s making your website work.)
2. Read Everything You Can
Tumblr media
Start reading. Because you are on this blog, you’re probably used to keeping track of what’s happening in the world of design. Keep reading.
Read everything you can about website design, and trends, and techniques, and best practices. Follow designers you admire on social media.
Cast a wide net for your website design reading as well. Read about the basics to learn some code, read about design theory and read tutorials and current articles.
3. Be An Effective Communicator
If you aren’t the most articulate person, brush up on those skills. A big part of website design is communication.
Website designers have to communicate with clients regularly to figure out what problem the design needs to solve; they have to communicate those solutions and implement them as well.
4. Subscribe to Tuts+ & Envato Elements
Consider a subscription to Envato Elements, which also gets you access to the excellent Tuts+ learning resource.
Tuts+ publish regular courses on graphic and web design, from basic techniques, through to the latest advanced approaches and developments. It’s completely self-paced, taught by expert instructors. You’ll also get access to Envato Elements, which is a great resource for finding graphics, templates, and more to plug into your web design work.
5. Think in HTML
HTML, or hypertext markup language, is a cornerstone of website design. HTML is the skeleton that helps create the structure of a website and once you can read the language, the world of website design will make a lot more sense.
W3Schools has a great HTML starter tutorial with hundreds of HTML examples that you can play with on the screen to see what happens and exactly how it works. (You might find it more intuitive than you imagined.)
6. Play with Code at Codeacademy
Tumblr media
While HTML is a good start, you can learn almost any programming language from Codeacademy. The free set of tools teaches you to code using interactive activities and games.
You can pick up a Codeacademy course where and when you need it and start and stop as needed. Pick a subject to learn – web development, programming, data science – or language to focus on – HTML & CSS (a great place to start), Python, Java, SQL, Ruby, and more.
7. Learn to Understand CSS
CSS, or cascading style sheets, define the presentation of a document written in HTML, or XML and SVG.
As defined by Mozilla
CSS describes how elements should be rendered on screen, on paper, in speech, or on other media.
Mozilla also has a great collection of CSS resources to get started, with a solid introduction of how CSS works, including selectors and properties, writing CSS rules, applying CSS to HTML, how to specify length, color, and other units in CSS, cascade and inheritance, box model basics, and debugging CSS. Then modules move on to explain styling text and boxes.
8. Apply Your Design Skills to the Web
If you are already working in a creative or graphic design field, think about the things you already know that you can apply to website design as well. The principles that make something visually appealing don’t change based on medium and all that design theory will come in handy in the digital space as well.
While elements such as learning code might not feel natural, having a design background is a huge bonus. What good is a beautifully coded website if not one wants to interact with it?
9. Pay Attention to Websites You Love
Take note of websites that you love. What about them is appealing to you? (And how can you learn to replicate those elements?) Pay attention to:
Typography
Navigation
Use of images and space
Design of forms
Animation and scroll effects
Color
10. Draw a Wireframe
Tumblr media
Wireframing is a web designer’s brainstorming.
In its purest form, a wireframe is a sketch of what the website will be. It’s not an outline of aesthetic elements, rather a blueprint of the website. Drawing a wireframe isn’t really about the look of this design, it’s about the information structure therein.
Not sure how to create a wireframe? Digital Telepathy has a guide of best practices to help you learn.
11. Take Some Time to Learn Sketch
Tumblr media
Sketch is a vector-drawing tool for Mac that makes it easy to create design elements. A lot of designers are turning to Sketch to create UI elements and repeating design blocks.
It’s packed with plugins and allows you to export code for easy use and access. It’s one of the most powerful, and popular, tools to come around since Adobe’s Creative Suite and totally worth your time.
12. Stay Up to Date with Technology
AI, VR, AR, 360-degree video, bots.
There are so many new technologies and trends that it can be hard to keep up. But you need to make a point to stay on top of these changes.
Tackle them one at a time and start with technologies that are the most directly related to the work you do. If you have a website with online chat, start by learning about bots. Or if you use a lot of video content, play around with 360-degree video.
Elements such as artificial intelligence and virtual or augmented reality are even more complex but are likely to become integrated parts of the website design landscape down the road. At a minimum, you should know what they are and what the potential uses might be.
13. Get Comfortable with SEO
Tumblr media
While many web designers think an SEO specialist can handle getting a website ready for search engines to read, there’s a lot of design work that’s connected to SEO.
From the way images are uploaded to creating clean code that’s fast to including meta descriptions on pages and elements, the designer should incorporate search thinking into their workflow.
Freelancers, this is vitally important for you as well. Most clients are savvy enough to ask for an SEO-optimized website. If you work alone, you need to know enough to create a solid framework that Google can read (and be able to refer the client to an SEO specialist if more work needs to be done).
14. Play with a Website Builder
A website builder can be a great way to get comfortable with best practices and how to start building and designing websites.
Most of these tools have plenty of templates and allow you to customize elements and even add code snippets. For simple sites, many website builders also have a free plan where you can create a personal portfolio page or basic website that serves as a playground for you.
Then pick apart the pieces within the website builder. Look at how they are designed and coded to get a feel for how it all comes together. You’ll be amazed what you can figure out just by picking another design apart.
15. Find a Mentor
Is there someone you work with that you admire as a web designer? Take them to lunch and pick their brain about the industry.
Finding a mentor that is willing to work with you and help you think about the field and how to learn web design on your own can be invaluable. And while you can probably find a mentor in an online community, nothing is better than a live person that you can meet face-to-face periodically. (Maybe it is worth having online and in-person mentors.)
16. Join the CodePen Community
Tumblr media
Once you start getting comfortable with some code and programming, you want to join the CodePen community. The open-source community allows you to share and edit code snippets in a social network of sorts.
Here’s a little more from the site’s founders: “CodePen is a social development environment. At its heart, it allows you to write code in the browser, and see the results of it as you build. A useful and liberating tool for developers of any skill, and particularly empowering for people learning to code. We focus primarily on front-end languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript and preprocessing syntaxes that turn into those things.
17. Take a Class
For some learners, a more formal classroom setting is best.
There are a ton of classes available – in-person and online – for you to learn web design basics. Start with a local college or online learning hub such as Udemy or Coursera. Pick up a class at your current ability level and just keep moving forward.
18. Want to Do Something? Google It
For the not-so-traditional-learner, find the answer to the web design problem on Google. There are so many tutorials and videos available that can walk you through almost any problem – and solution.
The key is to search exactly what you need to know and look to a reputable source for the answer. Here’s another tip when it comes to tutorials and videos – more recent content is probably going to give you a better, more complete and more relevant answer. (Remember, some of this stuff is changing fast.)
19. Pay Attention to the User Experience
Nothing can make or break a website like user experience design. You need to plan for it and understand it.
Here’s how the Interaction Design Foundation describes UX design:
User experience (UX) design is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and personally relevant experiences. This involves the careful design of both a product’s usability and the pleasure consumers will derive from using it. It is also concerned with the entire process of acquiring and integrating the product, including aspects of branding, design, usability, and function.
UX designers, or designers who are aware of the process of experience formation, seek to create and shape the factors influencing the process deliberately. To do this, a UX designer will consider the Why, What, and How of product use.
20. Pay Attention to Design Trends
What does modern website design look like? It’s not a trick question. To design modern websites and user experiences, you need to know what users want and how they are interacting with it. If the last time you downloaded an app or looked at a website on your phone was 2016, you’ve got a lot of ground to make up.
Creating website designs that have modern touches and trends integrated into the design will help your projects stand out. How do you know what’s trending? Keep reading sites like this and pay attention to what other designers are doing. Take note of colors and styles and features that are included in websites you visit frequently.
21. Create Without Color
Tumblr media
Start every design without color. A great designer once told me that if your design works in black and white, it will be flawless in color.
That might not always hold true, but it is a great starting point.
By creating designs in black and white, you can see where elements contrast and how they play together. You’ve stripped out any emotional associations with color or eye movement that happens because of it. This simplest form of design will give you an idea if something works as a concept before you move on to finalizing it.
22. Learn to Love Google Fonts
Tumblr media
Google Fonts is your friend.
Regardless of how you feel about Google, the ability to browse, sort and select typefaces that you know will work in website designs is important. You don’t have to think about licensing or if typefaces are compatible with specific browsers or not.
The limitation is that you only have what’s in the Google Fonts library to work with. But if you try you can find something that will fit almost every project. It’ll save you a lot of time in the long run.
23. Pick Apart a UI Kit
Download a user interface or icon kit and pick it apart.
Just as you can inspect the code of a website, look at how design elements are constructed for the web. Take note of the scale and grid, look at the color mixes and how files are organized within Photoshop or Illustrator.
Look for a kit to download that includes elements in multiple formats for high-resolution displays. (Downloading a bunch of JPEGs isn’t going to serve you all that well.)
Then try to build or customize an element or two of your own.
24. Become a Typographer
Modern website design has a strong focus on typography … good typography. From hero headers with giant words to layers of text that draw a user into the design, understanding the principles of how to pair type elements and construct engaging text blocks is vital.
Start with Ellen Lupton’s Thinking with Type. (There’s also a book of the same name.) Lupton is the authority on typography and her information will have you thinking like a typographer in no time.
25. Jump into JavaScript
When you are starting to feel pretty good about dabbling with web design, challenge yourself again to learn JavaScript. After HTML and CSS, it is the most important language of the web.
JavaScript is the tool that allows designers to implement complex things and interaction on web pages. It’s what makes a slider slide or that parallax animation animate.
Learn JS has an interactive tutorial to help you get started.
26. Update Your Portfolio
Tumblr media
Once you start designing for the web, make sure to update your portfolio with web design projects. This simple action will help you show yourself … and others … that web design is part of your repertoire.
An updated portfolio can help potential clients see what your “style” looks like. Make sure to showcase layouts, colors, typography and different techniques that show what you can do.
27. Challenge Yourself
With so many shortcuts and code snippets to help you fix almost any website issue you are having, don’t get lazy. Remember to challenge yourself continually to learn new skills, new technologies and keep improving your web design game.
The one thing about this field is that it is constantly changing; there’s always something new to learn or try.
28. Maximise Your Experience
Get out there and design. You have to start designing websites to be a web designer.
Start small, but take on projects with others. Ask to join in on a project with a team at work. Tackle a small website for a friend. The more experience you have building websites, the better and faster you will get.
What are you waiting for? Stop procrastinating.
29. Ask for Feedback
Use your network to collect feedback on your website design projects, no matter how small you think they are. Listen to this feedback – even if you don’t like it and see what you can learn.
Aside from visual preference, did the person providing feedback offer suggestions for making the website function better? Could they easily understand the goal of the design? Did they connect with the messaging?
30. Keep Learning New Things
Tumblr media
To be a great website designer, you just need to keep playing, trying and learning new things. Make a point to network and communicate with others in the field so that you can stay on top of techniques and visual changes that are in-demand.
If you are looking to learn website design, then this is probably already something you regularly do. But this is an evolving field, and it keeps changing almost every day. Just ask anyone who is doing it.
