I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

Which eSims are currently being called for?

For Connecting Humanity: if you sent an eSim more than two weeks ago and it is still valid and not yet activated, reply to the email in which you originally sent the eSim. To determine whether the eSim is still valid, scan the QR code with a smartphone; tap the yellow button that reads “Cellular plan”; when a screen comes up reading “Activate eSIM,” click the button that says “Continue.” If a message comes up reading “eSIM Cannot Be Added: This code is no longer valid. Contact your carrier for more information,” the eSim is activated, expired, or had an error in installation, and should not be sent. It is very important not to re-send invalid eSims, since people may walk several kilometers to access wifi to connect their eSims only to find out that they cannot be activated.

If a screen appears reading “Activate eSIM: An eSIM is ready to be activated” with a button asking you to “Continue,” do not click “Continue” to activate the eSim on your phone; exit out of the screen and reply to the email containing that QR code.

How do I purchase an eSim?

If you cannot download an app or manage an eSim yourself, send funds to Crips for eSims for Gaza (Visa; Mastercard; Paypal; AmEx; Canadian e-transfer), or to me (venmo @gothhabiba; paypal.me/Najia; cash app $NajiaK, with note “esims” or similar; check the notes of this post for updates on what I've purchased.)

You can purchase an eSim yourself using a mobile phone app, or on a desktop computer (with the exception of Simly, which does not have a desktop site). See this screenreader-accessible guide to purchasing an eSim through each of the five services that the Connecting Humanity team is calling for (Simly, Nomad, Mogo, Holafly, and Airalo).

Send a screenshot of the plan's QR code to gazaesims@gmail.com. Be sure to include the app used, the word "esim," the type of plan (when an app has more than one, aka "regional Middle East" versus "Palestine"), and the amount of data or time on the plan, in the subject line or body of your email.

Which app should I use?

Try to buy an eSim from one of the apps that the team is currently calling for (see above).

If the team is calling for multiple apps:

Nomad is best in terms of data price, app navigability, and ability to top up when they are near expiry; but eSims must be stayed on top of, as you cannot top them up once the data has completely run out. Go into the app settings and make sure your "data usage" notifcations are turned on.

Simly Middle East plans cannot be topped up; Simly Palestine ones can. Unlike with Nomad, data can be topped up once it has completely run out.

Holafly has the most expensive data, and top-ups don't seem to work.

Mogo has the worst user interface in my opinion. It is difficult or impossible to see plan activation and usage.

How much data should I purchase?

Mirna el-Helbawi has been told that large families may all rely on the same plan for data (by setting up a hotspot). Some recipients of eSim plans may also be using them to upload video.

For those reasons I would recommend getting the largest plan you can afford for plans which cannot be topped up: namely, Simly "Middle East" plans, and Holafly plans (they say you can top them up, but I haven't heard of anyone who has gotten it to work yet).

For all other plans, get a relatively small amount of data (1-3 GB, a 3-day plan, etc.), and top up the plan with more data once it is activated. Go into the app’s settings and make sure low-data notifications are on, because a 1-GB eSIM can expire very quickly.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Check back regularly to see if the plan has been activated. Once it's been activated, check once a day to see if data is still being used, and how close the eSim is to running out of data or to expiring; make sure your notifications are on.

If the eSim hasn't been activated after three weeks or so, reply to the original email that you sent to Gaza eSims containing the QR code for that plan.

If you purchased the eSim through an app which has a policy of starting the countdown to auto-expiry a certain amount of time after the purchase of the eSim, rather than only upon activation (Nomad does this), then also reply to your original e-mail once you're within a few days of this date. If you're within 12 hours of that date, contact customer service and ask for a credit (not a refund) and use it to purchase and send another eSim.

How can I tell if my plan has been activated? How do I top up a plan?

The Connecting Humanity team recommends keeping your eSims topped up once they have been activated.

See this guide on how to tell if your plan has been activated, how to top up plans, and (for Nomad) how to tell when the auto-expiry will start. Keep topping up the eSim for as long as the data usage keeps ticking up. This keeps a person or family connected for longer, without the Connecting Humanity team having to go through another process of installing a new eSim.

If the data usage hasn't changed in a week or so, allow the plan to expire and purchase another one.

What if I can't afford a larger plan, or don't have time or money to keep topping up an eSim?

I have set up a pool of funds out of which to buy and top up eSims, which you can contribute to by sending funds to my venmo (@gothhabiba), PayPal (paypal.me/Najia), or cash app ($NajiaK) (with note “esims” or similar). Check the notes of this post for updates on what I've purchased, which plans are active, and how much data they've used.

Crips for eSims for Gaza also has a donation pool to purchase eSims and top them up.

Gaza Online (run by alumni of Gaza Sky Geeks) accepts monetary donations to purchase eSims as needed.

What if my eSim has not been activated, even after I replied to my email?

Make sure that the QR code you sent was a clear screenshot, and not a photo of a screen; and that you didn’t install the eSim on your own phone by scanning the QR code or clicking “install automatically."

Possible reasons for an eSim not having been activated include: it was given to a journalist as a back-up in case the plan they had activated expired or ran out of data; there was an error during installation or activation and the eSim could no longer be used; the eSim was installed, but not activated, and then Israeli bombings destroyed the phone, or forced someone to leave it behind.

An eSim that was sent but couldn’t be used is still part of an important effort and learning curve. Errors in installation, for example, are happening less often than they were in the beginning of the project.

Why should I purchase an eSim? Is there any proof that they work?

Israel is imposing near-constant communications blackouts on Gaza. The majority of the news that you are seeing come from Gaza is coming from people who are connected via eSim.

eSims also connect people to news. People are able to videochat with their family for the first time in months, to learn that their family members are still alive, to see their newborn children for the first time, and more, thanks to eSims.

Some of this sharing of news saves lives, as people have been able to flee or avoid areas under bombardment, or learn that they are on evacuation lists.

Why are different plans called for at different times?

Different eSims work in different areas of the Gaza Strip (and Egypt, where many refugees currently are). The team tries to keep a stockpile of each type of sim on hand.

Is there anything else I can do to help?

There is an urgent need for more eSims. Print out these posters and place them on bulletin boards, in local businesses, on telephone poles, or wherever people are likely to see them. Print out these foldable brochures to inform people about the initiative and distribute them at protests, cafes and restaurants, &c. Also feel free to make your own brochures using the wording from this post.

Select your the cafe collaboration and store.

Tap "Search by date" and then you select the date you would like to book.

Tap the time frame you'd want to reserve.

Verify that the time and place is correct, then tap "Proceed to application".

Cancellations and Refunds

Reservations can be made until 10am the day before the desired visit. Anytime after that will not be possible to book. You are limited to reserving to only 6 slots. Reservations can be cancelled until 10am the day before the reservation and can be done through the LINE app. If you must cancel for any reason, any time after that, you must contact the store so you can receive a refund.

Additional Information

Walk-ins are possible only if there is a vacant seat or a cancelled reservation.

Pets are not allowed to enter the store.

Entry is granted 10 minutes earlier before the reservation time.

If you do not appear within the first 15 minutes of the reservation, it will be treated as a cancellation.

Be sure to prepare for your check-in in advance. You will need to bring an ID and use the LINE GALLERY mini-app to scan the QR code when entering the store.

Elementary aged customers can enter with a guardian.

Reservation and visitor benefits will only be distributed to those who visits the store.

There will be a limited supply of goods.

If you are late to your reservation time, there will be no extension.

Plush Generation 3

As many of you noticed I brought up about new plush coming to Webkinz. For those who are hearing this the first time I wanna break down all the information in a simpler way to understand everything I know.

Gen 2 Plush Current State

The Gen 2 plush first launched in 2020 has not created a new plush since March 2024 which is really weird considering it has been a year and 2 months since the last plush was created. With 0 word from Webkinz or Ganz as to when the Next plush will be and based on the sales records for the current Gen 2 plush it’s safe to say it did not go well for the relaunch.

Toy Store’s Confirming

Recently 2 Toy stores and some comments of people claiming to work at stores say that the plush is coming but we will focus on the 2 official toy stores that will. First Toystore to confirm is Learning Express store. Specifically the one in Lake Zurich, Illinois. The owner has made a few posts confirming he has the paperwork and was planned to be part of a pre launch in May. However on a recent update the plush toy has been delayed till Fall.

The second toy store to confirm is Playthings etc. located in Butler, Pennsylvania however it was based on someone’s contact with the store as the store is not promoting the upcoming launch.

Ganz Displays

Recently a lot of user have found that Ganz has uploaded new Displays to their website for Webkinz. Take note that the QR codes are just filled QR’s and don’t lead to anything Webkinz related. But the displays have an availability date set for September 1, 2025.

While many people may speculate that this could be built for the Generation 2 plush. That is not possible. One reason being that the Generation 2 plush didn’t have displays just the boxes they came in and printable posters. As well a user pointed out that the shelves on the Floor Display have 2 different hights with the bottom 2 carrying larger plush while the top 2 appear to have room for smaller plush sizes.

What do the plush look like

This is the million dollar question. That many are asking. Myself at this time I cannot confirm what the new plush will look like. There is a user claim that there is 12 plush planned for launch with the plush looking like the classic Webkinz Plush but at this time. We don’t know.

When to expect the plush

While myself among many others don’t know when the next generation plush for sure know when the new plush will launch it is safe to say we could expect the plush somewhere around late September or early October as we enter the Christmas holiday shopping season.

Myself working in retail I feel this is a good approach for Ganz as many items do get purchased during Quarter 4 or also known as the Golden Quarter. But as for now it is the waiting game for any information or Statements Webkinz may release. Stay tuned as I will update when info comes available.

The description says “delivery is guaranteed” and that the brown powder can be shipped safely to Europe, the US, the UK and beyond: “If you are interested,” it says, “kindly contact with me.”

The advertisement appears harmless, but it is far from it: isotonitazene is a type of nitazene, a class of synthetic opioids up to 40 times stronger than fentanyl and up to 500 times more powerful than heroin.

Nitazenes were developed in the 1950s by a Swiss chemical company as a new type of painkiller, but the drug was so potent that it was never approved as a medicine. Even trace quantities can cause an overdose.

Decades later, nitazenes have re-emerged in the underground drug market: they have been detected in counterfeit prescription medicines, including fake oxycodone and benzodiazepines pills, and in street drugs, including cocaine, heroin and ketamine.

The UN drugs agency and countries around the world have warned of the major health risks posed by nitazenes. The super-strength opioid has already caused hundreds of deaths in Europe, the UK and North America.

A months-long open source investigation by Bellingcat and publishing partner Postimees has identified a trove of more than 1,000 online adverts selling six of the most common types of nitazenes and offering worldwide delivery.

The investigation team analysed the websites, social media accounts and contact details related to the ads, and searched business registries for information on companies associated with the drug sales. 

It established that a series of entities linked to the advertisements match listings for companies on China’s corporate register — including one registered company that is advertising scores of nitazenes online.

Requests for public information, including court files and customs records, uncovered additional evidence linking nitazenes shipments seized in Europe back to China.

The findings come as recent geopolitical events threaten to exacerbate the flood of nitazenes globally. In 2019 China banned all variants of fentanyl, a potent opioid that is fuelling the most lethal drug crisis in America’s history. And in 2022, a “poppy ban” imposed by the Taliban led to a massive drop in opium production in Afghanistan, the source of virtually all the heroin supplied to Europe.

Experts say these factors have opened up a vacuum for alternative synthetic opioids – such as nitazenes – to emerge. “At some stage we know for sure heroin will dry out, and then there’s a danger that some of those people [drug users] may go into nitazenes,” said Thomas Pietschmann, a senior research officer with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. “And that’s a particular danger because of its high potency.”

Y'all. I just had the wildest afternoon. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Got a call from my local sheriff's office. Amygdala immediately hijacked. Guy tells me that they have a warrant for my arrest because I was in contempt of court due to missing jury duty. I petty much immediately say I never received a summons.

"Well, we have a signed document here that you received this on January 26th, and were meant to be at the courthouse on February 19th." I repeat that i never received anything. He says well there's a way that they can contest it if i come down to the sheriff's office and they investigate my signature.

They gave me two citation numbers and swapped me to their payment department, who preceded to tell me that I was under a "make and maintain contact" order AND a gag and suppress order. Explained that per the 1st, they have to stay on the phone with me while I head to the sheriff's office otherwise cops will stop me to arrest me. And I can't tell anyone about this except legal council. 🚩

So I'm still freaked out, and i go to my bank to get cash as instructed before I'm meant to head to a "federal kiosk" with the qr code so i can get "citation information" so that I don't get arrested as soon as I step into the sheriff's office.

Except the supposed federal kiosk is supposedly a yellow and black atm at a gas station. And there isn't one at that gas station. And the guy says it's a coinhub. And there's been enough things over the hour that I was on the phone with these guys that I've already felt like i was being scammed. And so I confront him on it, they tell at me a bit threatening to arrest me but when I didn't back down at that threat they just hung up.

So uh .... that's a scam going around nationally folks. Don't get fooled.

What do I put on a medical ID?

I made a post 10mo ago about getting a medical ID and what to put on it. I've since made 3 other medical bracelets and I've learned a lot.

What should you put on it?

This is highly individualized to your specific conditions and needs, but you should prioritize the information that emergency services need to be aware of.

Allergies: are there any allergies that EMS needs to know that could have contributed to a medical emergency.

Medication: Do you have any meds that have serious interactions with common meds? Are you on blood thinners? Do you have rescue medications? Example: I am on Metformin and it can send you into lactic acidosis under anesthesia, so I have to stop it days before any scheduled surgeries. This isn't possible for emergency surgery so they need to know this.

Conditions/Past Medical History: if you're like me, it's possible not all of your medical conditions will fit onto one ID. Choose the ones that are most likely to cause a medical emergency or be relevant in one.

Implants/Medical devices: certain medical devices can interact with medical imaging. And it's important for EMS to just know it's there. I've had medical professionals almost tug on my GJ tube because they thought it was an IV tube or EKG lead.

Identification: up to you- but would be helpful to get access to your records at the hospital. If you carry your ID/license on you, you can probably get away with not listing your name and birthday. Be careful putting identity information if you think you could lose an ID bracelet easily.

Other relevant information: blood type, diet considerations, where to find your rescue meds

Here are my medical bracelets! I have a general one, a medication ID, and a bracelet with my port details.

If you can't wear bracelets, they make other medical ID necklaces. they also make IDs that can go over your watch band. I prefer bracelets because there's more room.

I generally don't recommend the ones that require you to use a USB or scan a QR code, because I find it highly unlikely that EMS would waste time to do this. A lot of companies will send blank ID wallet cards that you can fill out with more extensive information.

Make it yours! Add as little or as much information as you want, but make sure it's medically relevant. Paramedics don't need to know you have seasonal allergies.

Table at the 2025 Zine Pavilion in Philadelphia! #ALAAC25

The #ZinePavilion is a space on the exhibit floor at the American Library Association’s annual conference to display zines, meet zine library workers, and talk about how zines and libraries are a great pair. It’s like a mini zine fair at the largest gathering of librarians in the world, with over 14,000 attendees, including librarians, archivists, writers, publishers and guest speakers. This year's conference will be held June 27 to June 30 in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

We’re looking for zine makers, distros, and zine libraries who would like to table at the Zine Pavilion. The exhibit hall is open Friday, June 27th (5:30 pm – 7:00 pm), Saturday, June 28th (9:00 am – 5:00 pm), Sunday, June 29th (9:00 am – 5:00 pm), and Monday, June 30th (9:00 am – 2:00 pm). Tablers can table for one day or up to all four. Tables are free, but space is limited. Priority will be given to local zinesters. We hope to let everyone know if they’ve been accepted to table the first week of May. Contact zinepavilion@gmail.com with any questions.

nomad esim walkthrough

if you’ve been wanting to donate esims but aren’t sure how the process works, it’s very straightforward! this is image heavy so most of it will be under the cut but here’s how to go through the process

first you’ll want to go to gazaesims.com and scroll down to the provider links and click on nomad - middle east

that will take you to this page where you can scroll down and select what size plan you want to buy (i just did 3gb for this example)

once you select one and click buy now it will ask you to sign in or create an account, once you do that it will take you to the order summary page which looks like this

scroll down a bit more and there’s a place to add a promo code if you have one (or use nomad points for a small discount if you’ve bought esims before), there also seems to be a 5% discount for middle east plans rn but i don’t know how long that will last

click proceed to checkout and at the top of the next page (you may have to scroll up) is where you put in your payment information, they have options for credit card, apple pay, and paypal

at the bottom of the page is two check boxes to click and then you can check out!

it will then take you to the confirmation screen and tell you where to go to install it, but don’t do that! if you install it then whoever it gets donated to can’t use it!

next you’ll need to wait for the email with the qr code to come through, it usually takes a minute or two but the email you’re looking for has the subject “here is how to access your nomad plan!”

a little farther down in this email is the qr code for the esim, take a screenshot of it and start an email to gazaesims@gmail.com, put the type and size of plan in the subject (you technically don’t have to but it helps them keep things organised and they can tell people what kind of plan they’re getting that way), insert the screenshot of the qr code, and send!

and voila! you have helped someone stay in contact with their family and friends :)
