Targaryens I Adore
Alysanne Targaryen: She dedicated herself to helping the nobles and small folk and banned the first night. Supported Rhaenys being queen and called out Jaehaerys. I don’t doubt she wanted to kill Viserys and Daemon over their disgusting treatment of their wives and children.
Aemma Targaryen: Aemma had a life of sadness but remained strong and remained kind, I highly doubt her father and siblings forgave Viserys for raping her. Aemma and Alicent deserved better.
Rhaena Targaryen: Rhaena had a tragic life, but she defended her mother’s memory and put Rogar in his place.
Alyssa Targaryen: If Alyssa was alive, I doubt she’d allow Viserys to treat Aemma and Alicent like trash along with Alicent’s children. Alyssa would literally strangle Viserys and Daemon over their appalling behaviour.
Daella Targaryen: Daella was a sweet girl, who was liked by a lot of people and adored in the vale by her stepchildren. I find it sad that Alysanne didn’t allow her to be buried in the Eyrie like she wanted.
Visenya Targaryen: Visenya took no one’s bullshit and would’ve killed Daemon for what he did to his wives and children. I’m pretty sure she approves of Aemond claiming Vhagar as does Baelon.
Rhaenys Targaryen: Rhaenys would be disappointed in her namesake and despise Viserys and Daemon. There’s a reason why Rhaenys was loved by the small folk.
Aegon II: Aegon had a life of tragedy and deserved better along with his siblings. He fought to ensure that Alicent and Helaena were known as queens, wanted statues of his brothers built and rightfully distrusted Corlys. Also, he loved his children and Jaehaera was everything to him.
Aemond Targaryen: Aemond had a life of misery and devoted himself to protecting his family and didn’t run like a coward from Daemon. Hell, he probably knew he was going to die but went down fighting and took down Daemon.
Helaena Targaryen: Helaena was a kind, beloved young woman and when she became queen, the small folk and servants loved her even more. She was literally an advisor to Aegon and she didn’t deserve to go through the horror Rhaenyra and Daemon put her through. Her death caused the small folk to go after Rhaenyra who wanted justice for her and her children. Dreamfyre went on a rampage after she died.
Daeron I: He was a brave boy and his siblings and mother loved him dearly. He went out like a hero and loved his dragon deeply.
Rhaella Targaryen: Rhaella had a life of tragedy and sadness but tried to protect her children and cared about Elia and her grandchildren. What Aerys did to her was disgusting.

In a universe where Rhaegar wins and Jon becomes a Targaryen prince, how do you think the family dynamics will be between the siblings + Rhaegar/Lyanna/Elia? Really interested in your opinion on this
Um. Bad?
aksjdjdj. The last blackfyre rebellion wasn’t that long ago not to mention Egg wasn’t too fond of Brynden so I think in general, Westeros is just incredibly wary of boy bastards who are castle raised. And even if Rhaegar does some plural marriage stuff, I do think there will be some bastard stigma still attached to Jon regardless.
Bigamy has not been done by the Targaryens since Maegor the Cruel. THE CRUEL. Not a great precedent here.
The last Targaryen who worshiped the old gods was Bloodraven, which is again, not a super great precedent to be invoking.
The Faith is in general pretty shitty about bigamy.
There were rumors that Daemon Blackfyre wanted to do some old school Valyrian stuff like marry Daenerys, take a second bride, etc., and considering all that shit went, once again, bringing to mind Daemmy B. is just a colossally bad idea
Also, “winning” in this situation means Rhaegar has at minimum killed Robert & Jon Arryn, and sent Ned to the Wall (but honestly probably offed him too), and Lyanna has walked into a situation where almost her entire family was killed by Rhaegar’s. Benjen is probably feeling some type of way. Storm’s End is probably still in a siege, because even after Robert dies, I simply cannot see Stannis giving up, because he simply has to trust that they won’t slaughter him and Renly for rebelling and he's not going to trust in that after Aerys and Rhaegar murdered so many Lords without a good reason. Jaime has killed Aerys (but protected Elia & the babies). Elia has spent months as a hostage, only for Rhaegar to come back MARRIED AGAIN with ANOTHER SON.
it’s a mess. an a tricky, unsure situation. rhaegar winning the war doesn’t mean the kingdom is back together. this one is so much different than the blackfyres or the dance because people had real, legit concerns with his father beyond succession or "but I wanna be king wahh!" rhaegar (and rhaella!) completely blow past those very rational, legitimate fears just to say “we’re in charge bitch.” it’s going to make for a very unhappy populace and a very uneasy peace. it’s going to make the situation between his children incredibly tense & toxic. So…..
I get stuck here a bit. Lyanna IS a child and not at fault for anything that happens and I will die on that hill with my head held high but the rest of the realm will not see it that way. I’m unsure if Elia would either. I would like to think they’d have a similar relationship that Naerys & Melly Blackwood had, wherein Naerys doesn’t hold it against Melly that her father sold her virginity to the King because Melly is kind to her (and probably fairly young) and Melly grows fond of the sad, sickly, sweet Queen that is just trying to survive the humiliation being heaped onto her. But this is a different situation - Lyanna isn’t a mistress, she’s a wife. An equal. Her son, like Maegor, like Aegon II, like Jacaerys, is a tiny bit of a threat to Elia’s. While fostering love & acceptance between the three is the ONLY correct and moral choice, I don’t know how likely it is. Rhaegar has a lot to deal with, and since Jon is not Visenya, I think Rhaegar probably feels a bit duped - he did everything right to have his third head of the dragon and yet he was given a boy that looks nothing like him. Lyanna probably feels very alone. Elia feels incredibly betrayed and bitter. And there’s likely a large Dornish faction at court pushing Lyanna out in this scenario because I’m not totally sure how the North is going to react to all this, so I don’t know if Benjen sends a Northern faction down South to look after her or just washes his hands of the whole thing (would Rhaegar even allow them at court after half the Starks were in open rebellion? What does court look like in the face of a justified rebellion that is snuffed out?).
Anyways, I think even best case scenario, this is a really fucked up situation that is going to lead to a lot of strife. My money is on Lyanna and Jon spending most of their time on Dragonstone or straight up holed up in their own separate apartments, away from Court and trying to lay low. I think they’d be heavily traumatized, and have terrible attachment issues probably on par with Rhaenyra/Aegon. I think Elia becomes close with Jaime because of the incredible risk he took trying to protect her, and since Tywin doesn’t sack the city, I think there’s a not unlikely chance Elia tries to bring the Martells closer to the Lannisters politically because of it. Tywin & Cersei probably won’t like that but I think Tyrion might fare a bit better if Elia sees use in befriending Jaime’s little brother and the technical heir to Casterly Rock (and i’m not saying dorne is a egalitarian, no ableism paradise - oberyn in my opinion steps over the line with tyrion - but considering the use of a wheelchair for Doran and the comments about Elia being not to healthy, I think they’re a little more accommodating of disability, which means Elia is simply pragmatic enough to look at Tyrion and see an opportunity. I think).
Elia, Rhaenys, and Aegon come out of things fine. Elia looks after Viserys and Daenerys and probably they come out better. But Lyanna and Jon are in their worst case scenario here without Ned to protect them and with Jon as a threat to Aegon's claim. So what I want to say is that Elia sees this as a Naerys/Melly situation and takes Lyanna under her wing, protecting her from the whispers at court about how she's a grasping, upjumped whore who worships strange, silent gods. She would take in Jon (probably called Aemon) and encourage a closeness between the three children, comforting Jon when he feels out of place by pointing out that Rhaenys also doesn't look like a Targaryen. That Elia would caution forgiveness for Lyanna's sake, and encourage Rhaegar to have a Northern faction at court to support Lyanna - even if it's literally just a handful of ladies and knights to remind her of home - and to forgive Stannis and Renly, to name Stannis as Lord of Storm's End and make promises of peace, that Aerys had stepped over the line and Rhaegar has taken a wife from the North and a wife from Dorne to ensure that doesn't happen again, that they will call a Great Council to discuss together perhaps having a larger small council that can counteract the King.
But I think in reality it's likely that Elia attempts to freeze Lyanna and Jon out and they are both perfectly happy sticking to Dragonstone and ignoring everyone.

Calling for ASOIAF experts!
So here’s the story: someone asked me about Rhaegar leaving Elia and their two children in King’s Landing versus Rhaegar leaving them on Dragonstone before he left King’s Landing and died at the Trident, and I wasn’t able to find a quote in any book confirming one or the other.
Here’s what I have:
Meanwhile, King Aerys was becoming ever more estranged from his own son and heir. Early in the year 279 AC, Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone, was formally betrothed to Princess Elia Martell, the delicate young sister of Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne. They were wed the following year, in a lavish ceremony at the Great Sept of Baelor in King's Landing, but Aerys II did not attend. He told the small council that he feared an attempt upon his life if he left the confines of the Red Keep, even with his Kingsguard to protect him. Nor would he allow his younger son, Viserys, to attend his brother's wedding.
When Prince Rhaegar and his new wife chose to take up residence on Dragonstone instead of the Red Keep, rumors flew thick and fast across the Seven Kingdoms. Some claimed that the crown prince was planning to depose his father and seize the Iron Throne for himself, whilst others aid that King Aerys meant to disinherit Rhaegar and name Viserys heir in his place. Nor did the birth of King Aerys's first grandchild, a girl named Rhaenys, born on Dragonstone in 280 AC, do aught to reconcile father and son. When Prince Rhaegar returned to the Red Keep to present his daughter to his own mother and father, Queen Rhaella embraced the babe warmly, but King Aerys refused to touch or hold the child and complained that she "smells Dornish."
The World of Ice and Fire, The Targaryen Kings - Aerys II
Here, we know Rhaegar and Elia lived on Dragonstone, and Rhaegar came back to King’s Landing later to present Elia and their daughter Rhaenys to his parents.
As cold winds hammered the city, King Aerys II turned to his pyromancers, charging them to drive the winter off with their magics. Huge green fires burned along the walls of the Red Keep for a moon's turn. Prince Rhaegar was not in the city to observe them, however. Nor could he be found in Dragonstone with Princess Elia and their young son, Aegon. With the coming of the new year, the crown prince had taken to the road with half a dozen of his closest friends and confidants, on a journey that would ultimately lead him back to the riverlands. Not ten leagues from Harrenhal, Rhaegar fell upon Lyanna Stark of Winterfell, and carried her off, lighting a fire that would consume his house and kin and all those he loved—and half the realm besides.
The World of Ice and Fire, The Fall of the Dragons : The Year of the False Spring
This is after the Tourney where Rhaegar crowned Lyanna his queen of love and beauty, where apparently Elia and their children are back at Dragonstone.
When the news reached the Red Keep, it was said that Aerys cursed the Dornish, certain that Lewyn had betrayed Rhaegar. He sent his pregnant queen, Rhaella, and his younger son and new heir, Viserys, away to Dragonstone, but Princess Elia was forced to remain in King's Landing with Rhaegar's children as a hostage against Dorne. Having burned his previous Hand, Lord Chelsted, alive for bad counsel during the war, Aerys now appointed another to the position: the alchemist Rossart—a man of low birth, with little to recommend him but his flames and trickery.
The World of Ice and Fire, The Fall of the Dragons: The End
Elia, Rhaenys and Aegon are now back in King’s Landing. The question being: when did that happen? Between the two last passages, there’s only another one which doesn’t mention Elia or the children, only Rhaegar taking all the Kingsguard with him to the Trident except for Jaime:
When Prince Rhaegar at last marched up the kingsroad to the Trident, with him were all but one of the Kingsguard who had remained in King's Landing: Ser Barristan the Bold, Ser Jonothor Darry, and Prince Lewyn of Dorne. Prince Lewyn took command of the Dornish troop sent by his nephew, the Prince Doran, but it is said that he did so only after threats from the Mad King, who feared that the Dornishmen looked to betray him. Only the young Ser Jaime Lannister remained in King's Landing.
The World of Ice and Fire, The Fall of the Dragons: Robert's Rebellion
Which is also confirmed by Jaime when he thinks about the last time he saw Rhaegar:
The day had been windy when he said farewell to Rhaegar, in the yard of the Red Keep. The prince had donned his night-black armor, with the three-headed dragon picked out in rubies on his breastplate. "Your Grace," Jaime had pleaded, "let Darry stay to guard the king this once, or Ser Barristan. Their cloaks are as white as mine."
Prince Rhaegar shook his head. "My royal sire fears your father more than he does our cousin Robert. He wants you close, so Lord Tywin cannot harm him. I dare not take that crutch away from him at such an hour."
Jaime's anger had risen up in his throat. "I am not a crutch. I am a knight of the Kingsguard."
"Then guard the king," Ser Jon Darry snapped at him. "When you donned that cloak, you promised to obey."
Rhaegar had put his hand on Jaime's shoulder. "When this battle's done I mean to call a council. Changes will be made. I meant to do it long ago, but . . . well, it does no good to speak of roads not taken. We shall talk when I return."
Those were the last words Rhaegar Targaryen ever spoke to him. Outside the gates an army had assembled, whilst another descended on the Trident. So the Prince of Dragonstone mounted up and donned his tall black helm, and rode forth to his doom.
A Feast for Crows - Jaime I
There’s no mention of Elia, Rhaenys and Aegon, nor is there any reason to believe Rhaegar would have left them in King’s Landing knowing Aerys’ state of mind. And since Aerys did prevent Elia from leaving for Dragonstone and kept her and her children hostages in King’s Landing, it makes sense to come to the conclusion that between Rhaegar leaving for the Trident and news of his death reaching King’s Landing, Aerys ordered Elia and her children back to the capital.
But where is it said?

Terrible Fic Idea #49: Robert's Rebellion, but make it gender swap
The thing I love about Robert's Rebellion is that its causes and motivations are far from clear. Was Lyanna kidnapped and raped? Did she go willingly with Rhaegar and chose to stay with him even after her disappearance led to war? Was Robert fighting for the woman he claimed to love or the Iron Throne? Every side has its own opinion, and that is just so viscerally real I can't help but love it.
So naturally I thought: what can I do to twist the narrative even further? Or: What if Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen were gender swapped?
Just imagine it:
In 281, King Aerys and Queen Rhaella have two living children: Rhaelle, 21 and heir apparent to The Iron Throne, and Visneya, 5.
For lack of viable Targaryen alternative, Rhaelle married the Dornish Prince Elias Martell two years previously, but it's far from a love match. They try, but active, outgoing, worldly - even mystical - Rhaelle has little in common with sickly, introverted, salt of the earth Elias. The more they try to make their marriage work, the more they rub each other the wrong way.
Then the tourney at Harrenhal occurs and Princess Rhaelle meets Lyman Stark, the third son of Lord Rickard, and it's love at first sight.
(She's also introduced to Robert Baratheon, who falls in love with her instantly, but the feeling is very much not returned.)
The first signs of trouble come when Lyman Stark wins the tourney and crowns Princess Rhaelle queen of love and beauty. It's not unheard of for unbetrothed knights to crown members of the royal family, but the way he does it sets the Dornish party on edge.
Rhaelle and Lyman begin corresponding after the tourney and, shortly after Rhaelle births her second child, she disappears from the Red Keep.
Robert's Rebellion hits all the same notes, but in a slightly different key.
Brandon Stark, rather than demanding the return of his sister, enters the Red Keep with his father to answer Aerys' summons. When neither profess to know the location of the crown princess, Aerys has both executed. It's this that sparks the rebellion, with Robert being the face of it not for the theft of his betrothed but for his proximity to the Iron Throne. (There should be a decided feeling that Robert would have tried for the throne if Rhaelle ever succeed her father.)
Elias dies at the Red Fork. Jaime kills the Mad King before he can blow up King's Landing. Princess Rhaenys and Prince Aegon are killed by Lannister knights. Robert takes the throne. Visneya and Daenerys are spirited off to Essos.
Throughout it all, there's no sign of Rhaelle or Lyman.
Ned eventually finds them both at the Tower of Joy, where he learns Lyman caught a fever and died shortly after learning of Brandon and Rickard's death. Rhaelle has been keeping his bones next to her bed a la Gustav II - and has recently given birth to a young son she's named Aenys.
When Rhaelle refuses to hand over Lyman's bones or return to the capitol, a struggle ensues. It should never be clear if Rhaelle went the Juliet I'd rather die without my beloved route or if Ned accidentally wounded her during the struggle.
Ned claims Aenys as his bastard son, renaming him Jon, and canon proceeds apace.
Very little should change in the lead-up to the books save that Rhaelle's actions are held up by men in power as just another reason women shouldn't be allowed to inherit. Dorne insists that the crown princess was kidnapped from her loving marriage with Prince Elias, the North insists that she went with Lyman willingly. Robert mourns in his cups over his lost love Rhaelle, who he would have treated so much better than Prince Elias, but still maintains the strongest bonds of brotherhood with Ned Stark, who he doesn't blame for Lyman's actions, saying he would have stolen Rhaelle away too if given half the chance. He also still wishes to murder her sisters hiding in Essos to secure his throne.
...and that's where the plot bunny runs out. What happens during the events of canon because of these changes is very much dealer's choice.
Bonuses include: 1) The rampant misogyny endemic to ASOIAF and the clear suggestion if you just treated women as human beings you wouldn't be in this position, but Rhaelle's decision to run away with Lyman not treated as a victory of feminism so much as an abdication of the responsibility she accepted when named crown princess; 2) Suggestions of Aerys' madness echoing in all members of the Targaryen family at various points throughout, but never explicitly seen in another until the Tower of Joy; and 3) Ned, remembering Rhaelle's final moments, always looking for signs of a similar madness in Jon and openly encouraging his desire to join the Night's Watch.
And that's all I have. As always, feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you decide to do anything with it.

Rhaegar Targaryen || Jon Snow (1/2)
Political Maneuvering to overthrow the ruling King: Aerys Targaryen
If this tale be believed, 'twas Prince Rhaegar who urged Lord Walter to hold the tourney, using his lordship's brother Ser Oswell as a gobetween. Rhaegar provided Whent with gold sufficient for splendid prizes in order to bring as many lords and knights to Harrenhal as possible. The prince, it is said, had no interest in the tourney as a tourney; his intent was to gather the great lords of the realm together in what amounted to an informal Great Council, in order to discuss ways and means of dealing with the madness of his father, King Aerys II, possibly by means of a regency or a forced abdication.
Jon Snow
Political Maneuvering to overthrow the ruling House: House Bolton "Your Grace, I know where you might find more men. Give me the wildlings, and I will gladly tell you where and how."
He turned to find Clydas standing beneath the broken archway, a parchment in his hand. “From Stannis?” Jon had been hoping for some word from the king. The Night’s Watch took no part, he knew, and it should not matter to him which king emerged triumphant. Somehow it did. …Stannis had taken Deepwood Motte, and the mountain clans had joined him. Flint, Norrey, Wull, Liddle, all…. The Night’s Watch was sworn to take no side in the quarrels and conflicts of the realm. Nonetheless, Jon Snow could not help but feel a certain satisfaction.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Heir to King when House Targaryen had almost come to an end, Viserys was too young: Aerys Targaryen
The new king had already provided the realm with an heir in the person of his son Rhaegar, born amongst the flames of Summerhall. Aerys and his queen, his sister Rhaella, were young, and it was anticipated that they would have many more children. This was a vital question at the time, for the tragedies of Aegon the Unlikely's reign had trimmed the noble tree of House Targaryen down to just a pair of lonely branches.
Jon Snow
Heir to King when House Stark had almost come to an end (in the eyes of the world), Rickon is too young: Robb Stark
"So you pray. Have you considered your sisters? What of their rights? I agree that the north must not be permitted to pass to the Imp, but what of Arya? By law, she comes after Sansa . . . your own sister, trueborn . . ."
". . . and dead. No one has seen or heard of Arya since they cut Father's head off. Why do you lie to yourself? Arya's gone, the same as Bran and Rickon, and they'll kill Sansa too once the dwarf gets a child from her. Jon is the only brother that remains to me. Should I die without issue, I want him to succeed me as King in the North.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Maester Aemon: Mentor
"He (Rhaegar) shared my belief when he was young, but later he became persuaded that it was his own son who fulfilled the prophecy, for a comet had been seen above King’s Landing on the night Aegon was conceived, and Rhaegar was certain the bleeding star had to be a comet. What fools we were, who thought ourselves so wise!”
Jon Snow
Measter Aemon: Mentor
"Kill the boy and let the man be born. You are half the age that Egg was, and your own burden is a crueler one, I fear. You will have little joy of your command, but I think you have the strength in you to do the things that must be done. Kill the boy, Jon Snow. Winter is almost upon us. Kill the boy and let the man be born."
" Knowledge is a weapon, Jon. Arm yourself well before you ride forth to battle."
Rhaegar Targaryen
Black Heart
“Rhaegar won, damn him. I killed him, Ned, I drove the spike right through that black armor into his black heart, and he died at my feet. They made up songs about it.”
Jon Snow
Black Heart
Once a man had said the words his blood was black. Black as a bastard’s heart.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Thought to be the Prince who was Promised: Prophecy
“No one ever looked for a girl,” he said. “It was a prince that was promised, not a princess. Rhaegar, I thought… the smoke was from the fire that devoured Summerhall on the day of his birth, the salt from the tears shed for those who died.
Jon Snow
Indicated to be the Prince who was Promised: Prophecy
I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, and R'hllor shows me only Snow.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Nature: Brooding
"Not sour, no, but … there was a melancholy to Prince Rhaegar, a sense …” The old man hesitated again.
Jon Snow
Nature: Brooding
Lord Stark’s sullen bastard had known Jeyne Poole, and he had always been fond of his little half-sister Arya.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Shadow of Birth: Summerhall
He was born in grief, my queen, and that shadow hung over him all his days.
Jon Snow
Shadow of Birth: Bastardy
Even his own mother had not had a place for him. The thought of her made him sad. He wondered who she had been, what she had looked like, why his father had left her. Because she was a whore or an adulteress, fool. Something dark and dishonorable, or else why was Lord Eddard too ashamed to speak of her?
Rhaegar Targaryen
Only a Stark girl brought him Joy: Lyanna Stark
“But I am not certain it was in Rhaegar to be happy.”
"It was said that Rhaegar had named that place the tower of joy."
Jon Snow
Only a Stark girl could make him smile: Arya Stark
Arya never seemed to fit, no more than he had… yet she could always make Jon smile.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Dark Eyes: Dark Purple
His silvery hair was blowing in the wind, and his eyes were a deep purple, darker than this boy’s.
Jon Snow
Dark Eyes: Dark Grey
Jon’s eyes were a grey so dark they seemed almost black, but there was little they did not see.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Loyal Lords/Knights wanted him/considered him as the King.
If he had not gone into Duskendale to rescue Aerys from Lord Darklyn's dungeons, the king might well have died there as Tywin Lannister sacked the town. Then Prince Rhaegar would have ascended the Iron Throne, mayhaps to heal the realm.
On the morning after the battle, the crows had feasted on victors and vanquished alike, as once they had feasted on Rhaegar Targaryen after the Trident. How much can a crown be worth, when a crow can dine upon on king?
Jon Snow
Loyal Lords and Wildlings want him/consider him as the King or their Leader.
Edmure and the Greatjon are prisoners, true… but you are forgetting  the envoys that Robb sent to Howland Reed… Galbart Glover, Maege  Mormont, Jason Mallister…(all witnesses to Robb's Will) they are all alive and free.
As to what is and is not moot… the key point is, only a =king= can legitimize a bastard……
GRRM SSM, August 06, 2000
"Tormund has given me his oath. He will serve with us until the spring. The Weeper and their other captains will swear the same or we will not let them pass."
None knelt, but many gave him their oaths. "What Tormund swore, I swear," declared black-haired Brogg, a man of few words. Soren Shieldbreaker bowed his head an inch and growled, "Soren's axe is yours, Jon Snow, if ever you have need of such." Red-bearded Gerrick Kingsblood brought three daughters. "They will make fine wives, and give their husbands strong sons of royal blood," he boasted. "Like their father, they are descended from Raymun Redbeard, who was King-Beyond-the-Wall."
Rhaegar Targaryen
Black Armour
Yet when the jousting began, the day belonged to Rhaegar Targaryen. The crown prince wore the armor he would die in: gleaming black plate with the three-headed dragon of his House wrought in rubies on the breast.
Jon Snow
Black Armour
“The next time I see you, you’ll be all in black.” Jon forced himself to smile back. “It was always my color. How long do you think it will be?”
“Snow,” an eagle cried, as foemen scuttled up the ice like spiders. Jon was armored in black ice, but his blade burned red in his fist.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Body
It was not the first time the queen had made note of Waters, a lean young man with grey-green eyes and long silver-gold hair. The first time she had seen him, for half a heartbeat she had almost thought Rhaegar Targaryen had returned from the ashes.
Jon Snow
Body
Jon was slender where Robb was muscular, dark where Robb was fair, graceful and quick where his brother was strong and fast.
Rhaegar Targaryen
Lyanna Stark and Robert Baratheon (Unwanted Betrothal)
"Not ten leagues from Harrenhal, Rhaegar fell upon Lyanna Stark of Winterfell, and carried her off,"
Jon Snow
Arya Stark and Ramsay Bolton (Unwanted Marriage)
That did not make them easier to say. His fingers closed around the parchment. Would that they could crush Ramsay Bolton's throat as easily.
He thought of Arya, her hair as tangled as a bird’s nest. I made him a warm cloak from the skins of the six whores who came with him to Winterfell… I want my bride back… I want my bride back… I want my bride back…
Rhaegar Targaryen
Breaks vows for a Stark Girl: Marriage
Prince Rhaegar loved his Lady Lyanna, and thousands died for it.
Jon Snow
Breaks vows for a Stark Girl: Night’s Watch

Dragon’s Reign,  A Song of Ice and Fire AU
Tumblr media
Inspired by @fromtheboundlesssea’s Into the Unknown series and @j-morgan-fly‘s fic, The Snow Bound Dragon. Rhaegar lives and Aerys and Rhaella’s other children also lives.
Tumblr media
Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys are the only children of Aerys and Rhaella who grew to adulthood, their other siblings died young. But, what if all their children lived?
Robert’s rebellion is crushed and the Targaryens still rules the Seven Kingdoms. After the death of King Aerys II, the new king, Rhaegar, pardoned the rebels, including the Lannisters, for their crimes against the Crown.
Rhaegar’s younger siblings and his children knew what he had done. What Aerys had done. Ever since then, they atone for their family’s sins, in their own way, to secure the peace in the kingdom.
But peace is a fragile thing. It takes courage to secure it. It takes wisdom to maintain it. And... winter is coming. Will the Seven Kingdoms unite against the imminent threat to the North before it’s too late?
Children of King Aerys II and Queen Rhaella Targaryen:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Headcanons I:
Aerys thought of betrothing Shaena to Rhaegar, but she refused, insisting that she doesn’t wanted an unhappy marriage like her parents. So, she married Daeron, her younger brother, who she has a close relationship with. This prompted Aerys to find a bride for Rhaegar of “proud Valyrian blood”.
Tywin refused the betrothal between his children, Cersei and Jaime, to Oberyn and Elia, because Tywin wanted his daughter to marry Rhaegar.
Tywin proposed a marriage between his daughter Cersei and Prince Rhaegar. Aerys reject the offer rudely, and instead betrothed Rhaegar to Princess Elia Martell, to spite Tywin (because he’s crazy).
In this AU, Rhaegar took advantage of Lyanna and abducted her before she could marry Robert.
When they heard that Rhaegar ran off with Lyanna, they’re enraged. Rhaegar’s younger siblings symphatize with Elia and took turns in taking care of her and her children.
The Targaryen siblings already HATED their father, and later, Rhaegar, for their actions sparked a rebellion.
Robert died in the battle. Lyanna died in childbirth. Elia lives.
Stannis becomes Lord of Storm’s End and Renly as his heir.
Viserys isn’t mad in this story. He has a mother-figure (Shaena) who took care of him, the same with Daenerys.
Viserys, with the help of his older siblings, withstood the abuse he received from his father. He’s suffering from night terrors ever since.
Daenerys is currently chillin’ in Dorne.
Whatever Rhaegar’s scheming (because of his obssession with the “three-headed dragon” prophecy or TPTWP), they always thwarted it in their on way.
They’re DONE with Rhaegar’s bullsh*t and they tolerate his shenenigans when they’re in public.
Tumblr media
Next is Rhaegar’s children: Rhaenys, Aegon, and Jon. Yeahhh. Tamzin Merchant is my fancast for Daenerys.
Sorry for any mistakes in grammar and for my crappy editing. I hope you like a brief summary of this AU.

Parallels between Aerys II Targaryen and Cersei Lannister (and why they are both foils to Dany)
In this post, I gathered all the parallels I could find between Cersei and Aerys II after recently rereading Cersei’s chapters and Aerys’s section in TWOIAF. While a lot of people have made good points criticizing how Cersei was written (namely, as incompetent, misogynistic and irredeemable, at least in the canon timeline where her fate is already sealed) considering her special place in the narrative (namely, as arguably the female character who most frequently and openly questions and challenges the validity of Westerosi patriarchy, as well as the only major female villain of the story and the only woman among the three Lannister siblings), it’s also true that GRRM intended her to be paralleled with Aerys II in many ways, which will be laid out here.
Recognizing how Aerys II and Cersei are alike is particularly important for emphasizing that both characters were written as foils to Daenerys, so I will also explain how Dany doesn’t share their similarities.
Both believe they are destined for greatness
Aerys II:
Aerys II did not lack for ambition. Upon his coronation, he declared that it was his wish to be the greatest king in the history of the Seven Kingdoms, a conceit certain of his friends encouraged by suggesting that one day he might be remembered as Aerys the Wise or even Aerys the Great. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
The Lord of Casterly Rock deserved rainbows. He had been a great man. I shall be greater, though. A thousand years from now, when the maesters write about this time, you shall be remembered only as Queen Cersei’s sire. (AFFC Cersei II)
That’s not the case with Dany. Her titles (the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, Mhysa, Azor Ahai, etc) were given to her by other people, she doesn’t think she’s special despite birthing dragons and receiving multiple prophecies and she’s incredibly hard on herself for every mistake she makes. She simply doesn’t have an exaggerated sense of her importance or abilities like Cersei and Aerys II do.
Both are cut by the Iron Throne
Aerys II:
Yet still the blades tormented him, the ones he could never escape, the blades of the Iron Throne. His arms and legs were always covered with scabs and half-healed cuts. (AFFC Jaime II)
Cersei:
The barbs and blades of the Iron Throne bit into her flesh as she crouched to hide her shame. Blood ran red down her legs, as steel teeth gnawed at her buttocks. When she tried to stand, her foot slipped through a gap in the twisted metal. The more she struggled the more the throne engulfed her, tearing chunks of flesh from her breasts and belly, slicing at her arms and legs until they were slick and red, glistening. (AFFC Cersei I)
While Cersei was only cut in a dream, this moment is still significant because the Iron Throne is infamous for only harming and ‘rejecting’ the bad rulers. GRRM could have written a similar dream for Dany if he wanted to make her and Cersei follow the same direction, specially in AFFC/ADWD where he noted multiple times that they’re meant to be paralleled and contrasted. Instead, while Cersei’s first chapter in AFFC begins with her dreaming of being on the Iron Throne and being cut by it, Dany’s first chapter in ADWD begins with her dreaming of a house with a red door. Also, while Cersei wishes she could sit on the Iron Throne but is unable to because only the King and the Hand can sit on it, Dany willingly gives up on the privilege to sit on an elaborate throne and chooses an ebony bench that "did not befit a queen" in Meereen. So, not only the author emphasized that Dany doesn’t want power for its own sake (but rather to help people) and that she wants to be at the level of her people, he also didn’t take the chance to portray her as a bad ruler (because she is a good one) like he did with Cersei and Aerys II.
Both feel excitement and pleasure at the sight of wildfire
Aerys II:
Frustrated, Aerys turned to the Wisdoms of the ancient Guild of Alchemists, who knew the secret of producing the volatile jade green substance known as wildfire, said to be a close cousin to dragonflame. The pyromancers became a regular fixture at his court as the king's fascination with fire grew. By 280 AC, Aerys II had taken to burning traitors, murderers, and plotters, rather than hanging or beheading them. The king seemed to take great pleasure in these fiery executions, which were presided over by Wisdom Rossart, the grand master of the Guild of Alchemists...so much so that he granted Rossart the title of Lord and gave him a seat upon the small council. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The sight had filled him with disquiet, reminding him of Aerys Targaryen and the way a burning would arouse him. A king has no secrets from his Kingsguard. Relations between Aerys and his queen had been strained during the last years of his reign. They slept apart and did their best to avoid each other during the waking hours. But whenever Aerys gave a man to the flames, Queen Rhaella would have a visitor in the night. (AFFC Jaime II)
Cersei:
Cersei thought of all the King’s Hands that she had known through the years: Owen Merryweather, Jon Connington, Qarlton Chelsted, Jon Arryn, Eddard Stark, her brother Tyrion. And her father, Lord Tywin Lannister, her father most of all. All of them are burning now, she told herself, savoring the thought. They are dead and burning, every one, with all their plots and schemes and betrayals. It is my day now. It is my castle and my kingdom. (AFFC Cersei III)
~
Cersei felt too alive for sleep. The wildfire was cleansing her, burning away all her rage and fear, filling her with resolve. “The flames are so pretty. I want to watch them for a while.” (AFFC Cersei III)
~
Jaime knew the look in his sister's eyes. He had seen it before, most recently on the night of Tommen's wedding, when she burned the Tower of the Hand. The green light of the wildfire had bathed the face of the watchers, so they looked like nothing so much as rotting corpses, a pack of gleeful ghouls, but some of the corpses were prettier than others. Even in the baleful glow, Cersei had been beautiful to look upon. She'd stood with one hand on her breast, her lips parted, her green eyes shining. She is crying, Jaime had realized, but whether it was from grief or ecstasy he could not have said.
The sight had filled him with disquiet, reminding him of Aerys Targaryen and the way a burning would arouse him. (AFFC Jaime II)
That never happens with Dany. She does describe the flames positively during the ritual to hatch the dragon eggs, but so does Jon Snow and GRRM himself. She does claim the fire as hers, but it has to do with her magical intuition as she puts two and two to birth her children and is ultimately validated. Most importantly, unlike Aerys II and Cersei, Dany a) never feels excitement while watching things burn for their own sake, b) never takes pleasure viewing or imagining her enemies burning and c) is never compared to Aerys II to highlight any disturbing behavior from her part. She is called the Mad King’s daughter by her enemies (the slavers and Mace Tyrell), but the characters around her and the ones who have nothing to gain by defaming her (Barristan, Tyrion, Illyrio, Quentyn) reiterate that she’s nothing like him. Meanwhile, two of the people who have known Cersei the longest (Jaime on the quotes above, Tyrion) compare her to Aerys II.
Both grow paranoid with time; they imagine implausible scenarios in which their perceived enemies are working (often together) against them, accept their baseless fears as truth and make hasty decisions based on them
Aerys II:
The march of the king's madness seemed to abate for a time in 274 AC, when Queen Rhaella gave birth to a son. So profound was His Grace's joy that it seemed to restore him to his old self once again...but Prince Jaehaerys died later that same year, plunging Aerys into despair. In his black rage, he decided the babe's wet nurse was to blame and had the woman beheaded. Not long after, in a change of heart, Aerys announced that Jaehaerys had been poisoned by his own mistress, the pretty young daughter of one of his household knights. The king had the girl and all her kin tortured to death. During the course of their torment, it is recorded, all confessed to the murder, though the details of their confessions were greatly at odds. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The birth of Prince Viserys only seemed to make Aerys II more fearful and obsessive, however. Though the new young princeling seemed healthy enough, the king was terrified lest he suffer the same fate as his brothers. Kingsguard knights were commanded to stand over him night and day to see that no one touched the boy without the king's leave. Even the queen herself was forbidden to be alone with the infant. When her milk dried up, Aerys insisted on having his own food taster suckle at the teats of the prince's wet nurse, to ascertain that the woman had not smeared poison on her nipples. As gifts for the young prince arrived from all the lords of the Seven Kingdoms, the king had them piled in the yard and burned, for fear that some of them might have been ensorcelled or cursed. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Captivity at Duskendale had shattered whatever sanity had remained to Aerys II Targaryen. From that day forth, the king's madness reigned unchecked, growing worse with every passing year. The Darklyns had dared lay hands upon his person, shoving him roughly, stripping him of his royal raiment, even daring to strike him. After his release, King Aerys would no longer allow himself to be touched, even by his own servants. Uncut and unwashed, his hair grew ever longer and more tangled, whilst his fingernails lengthened and thickened into grotesque yellow talons. He forbade any blade in his presence save for the swords carried by the knights of his Kingsguard, sworn to protect him. His judgments became ever harsher and crueler. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Once safely returned to King's Landing, His Grace refused to leave the Red Keep for any cause and remained a virtual prisoner in his own castle for the next four years, during which time he grew ever more wary of those around him, Tywin Lannister in particular. His suspicions extended even to his own son and heir. Prince Rhaegar, he was convinced, had conspired with Tywin Lannister to have him slain at Duskendale. They had planned to storm the town walls so that Lord Darklyn would put him to death, opening the way for Rhaegar to mount the Iron Throne and marry Lord Tywin's daughter. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
And when the triumphant Prince of Dragonstone named Lyanna Stark, daughter of the Lord of Winterfell, the queen of love and beauty, placing a garland of blue roses in her lap with the tip of his lance, the lickspittle lords gathered around the king declared that further proof of his perfidy. Why would the prince have thus given insult to his own wife, the Princess Elia Martell of Dorne (who was present), unless it was to help him gain the Iron Throne? The crowning of the Stark girl, who was by all reports a wild and boyish young thing with none of the Princess Elia's delicate beauty, could only have been meant to win the allegiance of Winterfell to Prince Rhaegar's cause, Symond Staunton suggested to the king. (TWOIAF The Fall of the Dragons: The Year of the False Spring)
~
When the news reached the Red Keep, it was said that Aerys cursed the Dornish, certain that Lewyn had betrayed Rhaegar. He sent his pregnant queen, Rhaella, and his younger son and new heir, Viserys, away to Dragonstone, but Princess Elia was forced to remain in King's Landing with Rhaegar's children as a hostage against Dorne. (TWOIAF The Fall of the Dragons: The End)
Cersei:
“I am counseling you. If you will not yield the regency to me, name me your castellan for Casterly Rock and make either Mathis Rowan or Randyll Tarly the Hand of the King.”
Tyrell bannermen, both of them. The suggestion left her speechless. Is he bought? she wondered. Has he taken Tyrell gold to betray House Lannister? (AFFC Cersei II)
~
“Lord Manderly hacked the head and hands off the onion knight, we have that from the Freys, and half a dozen other northern lords have rallied to Lord Bolton. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Where else can Stannis turn, but to the ironmen and the wildlings, the enemies of the north? But if he thinks that I am going to walk into his trap, he is a bigger fool than you.” (AFFC Cersei VII)
~
“No doubt. Tell me, was it our little queen who commanded you to kill Lord Gyles?”
“K-kill?” Grand Maester Pycelle’s eyes grew as big as boiled eggs. “Your Grace cannot believe ... it was his cough, by all the gods, I ... Her Grace would not ... she bore Lord Gyles no ill will, why would Queen Margaery want him ...”
“... dead? Why, to plant another rose on Tommen’s council. Are you blind or bought? Rosby stood in her way, so she put him in his grave. With your connivance.” (AFFC Cersei IX)
~
She knew Joff was too strong for her, Cersei thought, remembering the gold coin Qyburn had found. For House Tyrell to hope to rule, he had to be removed. It came back to her that Margaery and her hideous grandmother had once plotted to marry Sansa Stark to the little queen’s crippled brother Willas. Lord Tywin had forestalled that by stealing a march on them and wedding Sansa to Tyrion, but the link had been there. They are all in it together, she realized with a start. The Tyrells bribed the gaolers to free Tyrion, and whisked him down the roseroad to join his vile bride. By now the both of them are safe in Highgarden, hidden away behind a wall of roses. (AFFC Cersei VI)
Cersei’s case is complicated in that she has valid reasons to be anxious: prophecies come true in her world, the Tyrells did kill Joffrey (she’s right in that regard, at least) and the coin found in the cell could be evidence that the Tyrells were involved in Tyrion’s escape. The problem is how she deals with her suspicions. To defeat Margaery, she projected her experiences on her (every widow definitely has sexual appetites, so Margaery definitely has lovers), held on to the few dubious signs that she was cheating on the king (Margaery asking Pycelle for moon tea or having a lively court), tortured an innocent man to confirm the story she needs to incriminate Margaery and arrested several innocent people. Besides that, Cersei also: alienates Kevan by avoiding his recommendations and giving important titles to other cousins based on her hunch that he was bought by the Tyrells (quote above); avoids giving the Tyrells help when the ironmen attack the Shield Islands based on her baseless suspicion that Stannis made an alliance with the ironmen and was, therefore, behind the attack on the Shield Islands with the intention to turn Cersei’s eyes away from the Storm’s End and Dragonstone (quote above); forces Pycelle to "confirm" what she wants to believe because of her guess that he helped the Tyrells kill Gyles Rosby (quote above). And these are just some of the major examples.
Dany has moments when she is unsure of whether the people around her are reliable or not. She questions if Reznak is trustworthy or if he, Hizdahr and the Green Grace joined forces against her or if Groleo could be one of the three prophesied treasons, but she remains willing to listen to their advice and never undermines or punishes them solely based on her suspicions because, unlike her father or Cersei, she has a healthy distrust of others.
Both choose to be excessively and needlessly brutal against their enemies and the people who offend them (even when their offenses are relatively minor and/or not supported by facts)
Aerys II:
When one such reported that the captain of the Hand's personal guard, a knight named Ser Ilyn Payne, had been heard boasting it was Lord Tywin who truly ruled the Seven Kingdoms, His Grace sent the Kingsguard to arrest the man and had his tongue ripped out with red-hot pincers. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The march of the king's madness seemed to abate for a time in 274 AC, when Queen Rhaella gave birth to a son. So profound was His Grace's joy that it seemed to restore him to his old self once again...but Prince Jaehaerys died later that same year, plunging Aerys into despair. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)

When Darklyn and his family were presented to him in chains, Aerys demanded their deaths—and not only Darklyn's immediate kin but his uncles and aunts and even distant kinsmen in Duskendale. Even his goodkin, the Hollards, were attainted and destroyed. Only Ser Symon's young nephew, Dontos Hollard, was spared—and only then because Ser Barristan begged that mercy as a boon, and the king he had saved could not refuse him. As to Lady Serala, hers was a crueler death. Aerys had the Lace Serpent's tongue and her womanly parts torn out before she was burned alive (yet her enemies say that she should have suffered more and worse for the ruin she brought down upon the town). (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
"M'lord, begging your pardon, Her Grace said those as didn't meet their numbers would have their hands crushed," the anxious smith persisted. "Smashed on their own anvils, she said."
Sweet Cersei, always striving to make the smallfolk love us. (ACOK Tyrion III)
~
"Y'Grace," he said quietly, "the boys caught a groom and two maidservants trying to sneak out a postern with three of the king's horses."
"The night's first traitors," the queen said, "but not the last, I fear. Have Ser Ilyn see to them, and put their heads on pikes outside the stables as a warning." (ACOK Sansa VI)
~
“I hope you did not wake them, Ser Boros. Let them sleep.”
“Sleep?” He looked up, jowly and confused. “Aye, Your Grace. How long shall—”
“Forever. See that they sleep forever, ser. I will not suffer guards to sleep on watch.” (AFFC Cersei I)
~
“His Grace should send the Wall a hundred men. To take the black, ostensibly, but in truth …”
“... to remove Jon Snow from the command,” Cersei finished, delighted. I knew I was right to want him on my council. “That is just what we shall do.” She laughed. If this bastard boy is truly his father's son, he will not suspect a thing. Perhaps he will even thank me, before the blade slides between his ribs. “It will need to be done carefully, to be sure. Leave the rest to me, my lords.” This was how an enemy should be dealt with: with a dagger, not a declaration. (AFFC Cersei IV)
~
“Send some of your whisperers to these shows and make note of who attends. If any of them should be men of note, I would know their names.”
“What will be done with them, if I may be so bold?”
“Any men of substance shall be fined. Half their worth should be sufficient to teach them a sharp lesson and refill our coffers, without quite ruining them. Those too poor to pay can lose an eye, for watching treason. For the puppeteers, the axe.”
“There are four. Perhaps Your Grace might allow me two of them for mine own purposes. A woman would be especially ...”
“I gave you Senelle,” the queen said sharply.
“Alas. The poor girl is quite ... exhausted.”
[...] “Yes, you may take a woman. Two, if it please you. But first I will have names. (AFFC Cersei V)
~
“I cannot have Falyse spreading tales about the city. Her grief has made her witless. Do you still need women for your ... work?”
“I do, Your Grace. The puppeteers are quite used up.”
“Take her and do with her as you will, then. But once she goes down into the black cells ... need I say more?” (AFFC Cersei VII)
Dany doesn’t act like this. She burned the masters in Astapor to protect her retinue and punished the Meereenese leaders who ordered the crucifixion of the slave children, but she also spared all the Yunkish masters and most of the Meereenese masters. Her leniency is the root of her problems in ADWD, since it allowed them to retaliate against the abolition of slavery. Additionally, Dany doesn’t punish Ghael for spitting on her, she doesn’t punish a boy for trying to attack her, she doesn't punish Xaro for threatening her to her face, she chooses not to follow her councillors' advice to punish the former slavers indiscriminately and so on. You can read more about how Dany's tendency is to avoid using violence in this meta.
Both use torture to get people to confirm what they believe or what's convenient for them
The king had the girl and all her kin tortured to death. During the course of their torment, it is recorded, all confessed to the murder, though the details of their confessions were greatly at odds. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
“Tell us how you pleasured the little queen. [...] How many of them did you have carnal knowledge of?”
“None of them. I’m just a singer. Please.”
[...] Lord Qyburn ran a hand up the Blue Bard’s chest. “Does she take your nipples in her mouth during your love play?” He took one between his thumb and forefinger, and twisted. “Some men enjoy that. Their nipples are as sensitive as a woman’s.” The razor flashed, the singer shrieked. On his chest a wet red eye wept blood. [...]
By dawn the singer’s high blue boots were full of blood, and he had told them how Margaery would fondle herself as she watched her cousins pleasuring him with their mouths. At other times he would sing for her whilst she sated her lusts with other lovers. “Who were they?” the queen demanded, and the wretched Wat named Ser Tallad the Tall, Lambert Turnberry, Jalabhar Xho, the Redwyne twins, Osney Kettleblack, Hugh Clifton, and the Knight of Flowers.
That displeased her. She dare not besmirch the name of the hero of Dragonstone. [...] The Redwynes could not be a part of it either. [...] “All you are doing is spitting up the names of men you saw about her chambers. We want the truth! [...] Horas and Hobber had no part of this, did they?”
“No,” he admitted. “Not them.”
“As for Ser Loras, I am certain Margaery took pains to hide what she was doing from her brother.”
“She did. I remember now. Once I had to hide under the bed when Ser Loras came to see her. He must never know, she said.”
“I prefer this song to the other.” (AFFC Cersei IX)
Dany doesn't act like her father or Cersei in that regard either. She allows the use of torture (which is normalized in her world) to question people regarding the murders of former slaves, but she stops it once she realizes that the results are unreliable because, unlike her foils, she cares about punishing the actual perpetrators, not about having her beliefs confirmed at any cost.
Both are often cruel, rude and disrespectful to others
Aerys II:
At the great Anniversary Tourney of 272 AC, held to commemorate Aerys's tenth year upon the Iron Throne, Joanna Lannister brought her six-year-old twins Jaime and Cersei from Casterly Rock to present before the court. The king (very much in his cups) asked her if giving suck to them had "ruined your breasts, which were so high and proud." (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Over his Hand's strenuous objections, the king doubled the port fees at King's Landing and Oldtown, and tripled them for Lannisport and the realm's other ports and harbors. When a delegation of small lords and rich merchants came before the Iron Throne to complain, however, Aerys blamed the Hand for the exactions, saying, "Lord Tywin shits gold, but of late he has been constipated and had to find some other way to fill our coffers." (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Tyrion, as the babe was named, was a malformed, dwarfish babe born with stunted legs, an oversized head, and mismatched, demonic eyes (some reports also suggested he had a tail, which was lopped off at his lord father's command). Lord Tywin's Doom, the smallfolk called this ill-made creature, and Lord Tywin's Bane. Upon hearing of his birth, King Aerys infamously said, "The gods cannot abide such arrogance. They have plucked a fair flower from his hand and given him a monster in her place, to teach him some humility at last." (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
Cersei stared at her, aghast. “Your lackwit sister gets herself raped by half of King’s Landing, and Tanda thinks to honor the bastard with my lord father’s name? I think not.” (AFFC Cersei II)
~
She wanted a storm to match her rage. To Jocelyn she said, “Tighter. Cinch it tighter, you simpering little fool.”
It was the wedding that enraged her, though the slow-witted Swyft girl made a safer target. (AFFC Cersei III)
~
“Would Your Grace honor her white knight with a dance?”
She gave him a withering look. “And have you fumbling at me with that stump? No. I will let you fill my wine cup for me, though. If you think you can manage it without spilling.” (AFFC Cersei III)
~
“Very well. Get off those saggy knees and try to remember what it was to be a man.” Pycelle struggled to rise, but took so long about it that she had to tell Osmund Kettleblack to give him another yank. (AFFC Cersei IX)
For the vast majority of the time, Dany is kind and courteous. Her detractors tend to question that fact with two main arguments: a) she laughed at Quentyn; b) she is intolerant about Meereenese culture. Their first argument is very weak. Dany didn't laugh at Quentyn, she laughed about the reason why Quentyn is called frog and then forgot to explain why she did so in the Common Tongue. Even then, though, Quentyn is so overwhelmed by her kindness that he only remembers that "the queen had always spoken to him gently". Their second argument is also unconvincing because Dany's dislike of several aspects of Meereenese culture has to do with their ties to slavery (case in point: the fighting pits) and, even then, she makes several concessions to culturally adapt. Additionally, unlike Aerys II or Cersei, she doesn't express her critical thoughts (which are way less common and way less derogatory than Cersei's) verbally.
Both give rewards and promotions to those who blindly obey and agree with them, regardless of whether they’re experienced, competent or trustworthy
Aerys II:
He was also vain, proud, and changeable, traits that made him easy prey for flatterers and lickspittles, but these flaws were not immediately apparent to most at the time of his ascension. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
His father's court had been made up largely of older, seasoned men, many of whom had also served during the reign of King Aegon V. Aerys II dismissed them one and all, replacing them with lords of his own generation. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The king replaced him as Hand with Lord Owen Merryweather, an aged and amiable lickspittle famed for laughing loudest at every jape and witticism uttered by the king, no matter how feeble. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The Mad King could be savagely cruel, as seen most plainly when he burned those he perceived to be his enemies, but he could also be extravagant, showering men who pleased him with honors, offices, and lands. The lickspittle lords who surrounded Aerys II had gained much and more from the king's madness and eagerly seized upon any opportunity to speak ill of Prince Rhaegar and inflame the father's suspicions of the son. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
"A weak ruler needs a strong Hand, as Aerys needed Father. A strong ruler requires only a diligent servant to carry out his orders." (AFFC Jaime II)
~
The Kettleblacks would charm her, take her coin, and promise her anything she asked, and why not, when Bronn was matching every copper penny, coin for coin? Amiable rogues all three, the brothers were in truth much more skilled at deceit than they'd ever been at bloodletting. Cersei had managed to buy herself three hollow drums; they would make all the fierce booming sounds she required, but there was nothing inside. (ACOK Tyrion IX)
~
My councillors. Cersei had uprooted every rose, and all those beholden to her uncle and her brothers. In their places were men whose loyalty would be to her. She had even given them new styles, borrowed from the Free Cities; the queen would have no “masters” at court beside herself. (AFFC Cersei IV)
~
Grand Maester Pycelle had wanted an older man “more seasoned in the ways of war” to command the gold cloaks, and several of her other councillors had agreed with him. “Ser Osfryd is seasoned quite sufficiently,” she had told them, but even that did not shut them up. They yap at me like a pack of small, annoying dogs. (AFFC Cersei V)
~
"She would have done better to leave the tower and burn her Hand. Harys Swyft? If ever a man deserved his arms, it is Ser Harys. And Gyles Rosby, Seven save us, I thought he died years ago. Merryweather ... your father used to call his grandsire 'the Chuckler,' I'll have you know. Tywin claimed the only thing Merryweather was good for was chuckling at the king's witticisms. His lordship chuckled himself right into exile, as I recall. Cersei has put some bastard on the council too, and a kettle in the Kingsguard. (AFFC Jaime V)
Besides the Kettleblacks (as shown above), Cersei rewards many other people that are rarely, if ever, willing to question her - Harys Swyft, Orton Merryweather, Aurane Waters, Gyles Rosby, Meryn Trant, Qyburn (the only one who doesn't turn his back on Cersei after she falls from power), etc. The only one that disagrees with her decisions regularly is Pycelle, which is why she rebukes him quite a few times throughout AFFC. Also, while Cersei considers Aerys a weak ruler, they both believe that their Hands should be servants that know their place and follow them blindly.
Dany doesn't restrict herself to only listening to the people she agrees with. She welcomes dissent multiple times throughout the books and so, consequently, her council gives voice to multiple groups (from the Unsullied to the freedmen to the former slavers to the Dothraki).
Both alienate and undermine important allies because of disagreements that could have been mended and fears that lead both rulers to perceive these potential allies as enemies
Aerys II:
The growing rift between the king and the King's Hand was also apparent in the matter of appointments. Whereas previously His Grace had always heeded his Hand's counsel, bestowing offices, honors, and inheritances as Lord Tywin recommended, after 270 AC he began to disregard the men put forward by his lordship in favor of his own choices. Many westermen found themselves dismissed from the king's service for no better cause than the suspicion that they might be "Hand's men." In their places, King Aerys appointed his own favorites...but the king's favor had become a chancy thing, his mistrust easy to awaken. Even the Hand's own kin were not exempt from royal displeasure. When Lord Tywin wished to name his brother Ser Tygett Lannister as the Red Keep's master-at-arms, King Aerys gave the post to Ser Willem Darry instead. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Perhaps seeking to gain advantage of His Grace's high spirits, Lord Tywin chose that very night to suggest that it was past time the king's heir wed and produced an heir of his own; he proposed his own daughter, Cersei, as wife for the crown prince. Aerys II rejected this proposal brusquely, informing Lord Tywin that he was a good and valuable servant, yet a servant nonetheless. Nor did His Grace agree to appoint Lord Tywin's son Jaime as squire to Prince Rhaegar; that honor he granted instead to the sons of several of his own favorites, men known to be no friends of House Lannister or the Hand. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
Lord Denys, seeing that Aerys's erratic behavior had begun to strain his relations with Lord Tywin, refused to pay the taxes expected of him and instead invited the king to come to Duskendale and hear his petition. It seems most unlikely that King Aerys would ever have considered accepting this invitation...until Lord Tywin advised him to refuse in the strongest possible terms, whereupon the king decided to accept, informing Grand Maester Pycelle and the small council that he meant to settle this matter himself and bring the defiant Darklyn to heel. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
Garth the Gross on the small council and his two bastards in the gold cloaks ... do the Tyrells think I will just serve the realm up to them on a gilded platter? The arrogance of it took her breath away.
“Garth has served me well as Lord Seneschal, as he served my father before me,” Tyrell was going on. “Littlefinger had a nose for gold, I grant you, but Garth—”
“My lord,” Cersei broke in, “I fear there has been some misunderstanding. I have asked Lord Gyles Rosby to serve as our new master of coin, and he has done me the honor of accepting.”
Mace gaped at her. “Rosby? That ... cougher? But ... the matter was agreed, Your Grace. Garth is on his way to Oldtown.”
“Best send a raven to Lord Hightower and ask him to make certain your uncle does not take ship. We would hate for Garth to brave an autumn sea for nought.” She smiled pleasantly.
A flush crept up Tyrell’s thick neck. “This ... your lord father assured me ...” (AFFC Cersei II)
~
Cersei had named her cousin Damion Lannister her castellan for the Rock, and another cousin, Ser Daven Lannister, the Warden of the West. Insolence has its price, Uncle. (AFFC Cersei III)
~
“I have been remiss. With a realm to rule, a war to fight, and a father to mourn, somehow I overlooked the crucial matter of naming a new master-at-arms. I shall rectify that error at once.”
Ser Loras pushed back a brown curl that had fallen across his forehead. “Your Grace will not find any man half so skilled with sword and lance as I.”
Humble, aren’t we? “Tommen is your king, not your squire. You are to fight for him and die for him, if need be. No more.”
She left him on the drawbridge that spanned the dry moat with its bed of iron spikes and entered Maegor’s Holdfast alone. Where am I to find a master-at-arms? she wondered as she climbed to her apartments. [...]
Aron Santagar was Dornish, Cersei recalled. I could send to Dorne. Centuries of blood and war lay between Sunspear and Highgarden. Yes, a Dornishman might suit my needs admirably. There must be some good swords in Dorne. (AFFC Cersei V)
~
He had even had the temerity to object to her sending to Dorne for a master-at-arms, on the grounds that it might offend the Tyrells. “Why do you think I’m doing it?” she had asked him scornfully. (AFFC Cersei VI)
~
“Your Grace, let me take Dragonstone.”
[...] No one had given Cersei such a lovely gift since Sansa Stark had run to her to divulge Lord Eddard’s plans. She was pleased to see that Margaery had gone pale. “Your courage takes my breath away, Ser Loras. [...] Swear to me that you shall not return until Dragonstone is Tommen’s.”
“I shall, Your Grace.” He rose.
[...] Pycelle had to struggle to keep up. “If it please Your Grace,” he puffed, “young men are overbold, and think only of the glory of battle and never of its dangers. Ser Loras ... this plan of his is fraught with peril. To storm the very walls of Dragonstone ...”
“... is very brave. [...] I have no doubt that our Knight of Flowers will be the first man to gain the battlements.” And perhaps the first to fall. (AFFC Cersei VII)
Dany doesn't do this; instead, she makes plenty of concessions to appease her influential allies, from wearing the tokar to marrying Hizdahr by Ghiscari rites if he gives her ninety days of peace to allowing Hizdahr to reopen the fighting pits to accepting a deal between Meereen and Yunkai that allows the latter to reinstall slavery. All of these decisions are ultimately mistakes since they unwittingly prioritize the privileges of the former masters over the rights of the former slaves, but they still show that Dany is capable of making alliances in a way that Aerys II and Cersei aren't due to their black and white thinking.
Both are extravagant rulers who plan grand schemes that are never realized
Aerys II:
His Grace was full of grand schemes as well. Not long after his coronation, he announced his intent to conquer the Stepstones and make them a part of his realm for all time. In 264 AC, a visit to King's Landing by Lord Rickard Stark of Winterfell awakened his interest in the North, and he hatched a plan to build a new Wall a hundred leagues north of the existing one and claim all the lands between. In 265 AC, offended by "the stink of King's Landing," he spoke of building a "white city" entirely of marble on the south bank of the Blackwater Rush. In 267 AC, after a dispute with the Iron Bank of Braavos regarding certain monies borrowed by his father, he announced that he would build the largest war fleet in the history of the world "to bring the Titan to his knees." In 270 AC, during a visit to Sunspear, he told the Princess of Dorne that he would "make the Dornish deserts bloom" by digging a great underground canal beneath the mountains to bring water down from the rainwood.
None of these grandiose plans ever came to fruition; most, indeed, were forgotten within a moon's turn, for Aerys II seemed to grow bored with his royal enthusiasms as quickly as he did his royal paramours. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
“Would that we could do the same to the rest of this foul castle,” said Cersei. “After the war I mean to build a new palace beyond the river.” She had dreamed of it the night before last, a magnificent white castle surrounded by woods and gardens, long leagues from the stinks and noise of King’s Landing. “This city is a cesspit. For half a groat I would move the court to Lannisport and rule the realm from Casterly Rock.” (AFFC Cersei III)
~
A group of merchants appeared before her to beg the throne to intercede for them with the Iron Bank of Braavos. The Braavosi were demanding repayment of their outstanding debts, it seemed, and refusing all new loans. We need our own bank, Cersei decided, the Golden Bank of Lannisport. (AFFC Cersei VIII)
That's not the case with Dany either. Throughout her reign, she only makes reasonable and attainable decisions to improve Meereen's economy, such as planting grapes, beans and wheat, replanting olive trees, making an alliance with the Lhazareen and freeing the slaves of the hinterlands to bring crops to the city.
Both are unpopular with the common people
Aerys II: (note that Tywin himself is unpopular with the smallfolk)
They cheered Father twice as loudly as they cheered the king, the queen recalled, but only half as loudly as they cheered Prince Rhaegar. (AFFC Cersei V)
Cersei:
As she made her way through the ragged throng, past their cookfires, wagons, and crude shelters, the queen found herself remembering another crowd that had once gathered on this plaza. The day she wed Robert Baratheon, thousands had turned out to cheer for them. [...]
No one was smiling now. The looks the sparrows gave her were dull, sullen, hostile. They made way but reluctantly. (AFFC Cersei VI)
~
Thrice that day she heard the sound of distant shouting drifting up from the plaza, but it was Margaery’s name that the mob was calling, not hers. (AFFC Cersei X)
We have yet to see how the common people in Westeros will view Dany, but she is very popular among freedmen and slaves from all over Essos, so she doesn't fit this either.
Both feel threatened by the shadow of Tywin Lannister
Aerys II:
By this time, King Aerys had become aware of the widespread belief that he himself was but a hollow figurehead and Tywin Lannister the true master of the Seven Kingdoms. These sentiments greatly angered the king, and His Grace became determined to disprove them and to humble his "overmighty servant" and "put him back into his place." (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
“Lord Tywin was a great man, an extraordinary man,” he declared ponderously after he had kissed both her cheeks. “We shall never see his like again, I fear.”
You are looking at his like, fool, Cersei thought. It is his daughter standing here before you. (AFFC Cersei II)
~
She was tired of Jaime balking her. No one had ever balked her lord father. When Tywin Lannister spoke, men obeyed. When Cersei spoke, they felt free to counsel her, to contradict her, even refuse her. (AFFC Cersei V)
This is not a perfect parallel because Cersei alternates between hero-worshiping and drawing inspiration and strength from Tywin to resenting the control he had over her, so much so that she lists her father alongside her enemies and takes pleasure in the fact that he's now dead. Even so, both Aerys II and Cersei feel that they were owed the treatment that people gave Tywin.
This doesn't happen with Dany because she doesn't feel threatened by anyone nor does Tywin play an important role in her story.
Both feel threatened by a younger, more beautiful, more popular would-be king/queen
Aerys II:
The cheers of the crowd were said to be deafening, but King Aerys did not join them. Far from being proud and pleased by his heir's skill at arms, His Grace saw it as a threat. Lords Chelsted and Staunton inflamed his suspicions further, declaring that Prince Rhaegar had entered the lists to curry favor with the commons and remind the assembled lords that he was a puissant warrior, a true heir to Aegon the Conqueror. (TWOIAF The Fall of the Dragons: The Year of the False Spring)
~
The lickspittle lords who surrounded Aerys II had gained much and more from the king's madness and eagerly seized upon any opportunity to speak ill of Prince Rhaegar and inflame the father's suspicions of the son. (TWOIAF The Fall of the Dragons: The Year of the False Spring)
~
(TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
~
The memory was still bitter. Old Lord Whent had announced the tourney shortly after a visit from his brother, Ser Oswell Whent of the Kingsguard. With Varys whispering in his ear, King Aerys became convinced that his son was conspiring to depose him, that Whent's tourney was but a ploy to give Rhaegar a pretext for meeting with as many great lords as could be brought together. Aerys had not set foot outside the Red Keep since Duskendale, yet suddenly he announced that he would accompany Prince Rhaegar to Harrenhal, and everything had gone awry from there. (ADWD The Kingbreaker)
Cersei:
Her mood was not improved when Mace Tyrell arose to lead the toasts. He raised a golden goblet high, smiling at his pretty little daughter, and in a booming voice said, “To the king and queen!” The other sheep all baaaaaaed along with him. “The king and queen!” they cried, smashing their cups together. “The king and queen!” She had no choice but to drink along with them, all the time wishing that the guests had but a single face, so she could throw her wine into their eyes and remind them that she was the true queen. (AFFC Cersei III)
~
“Your Grace, she ... she is the queen ...”
“I am the queen. (AFFC Cersei IX)
~
It was a pity that Maggy the Frog was dead. Piss on your prophecy, old woman. The little queen may be younger than I, but she has never been more beautiful, and soon she will be dead. (AFFC Cersei IX)
Cersei's case is more justified in that she believes that, by defeating the YMBQ, she'll also prevent her children from dying and the valonqar from killing her.
This doesn't happen with Dany.
Both lost a child (children, in Aerys’s case) and fear for the safety of their remaining child (children, in Cersei’s case) to the point that these concerns become intertwined with their fears that someone is out to get them
Aerys II:
Cersei:
I am dreaming still, Cersei thought. I have not woken, nor has my nightmare ended. Tyrion will creep out from under the bed soon and begin to laugh at me.
[...] A dream, that’s all it was, a dream. I drank too much last night, these fears are only humors born of wine. I will be the one laughing, come dusk. My children will be safe, Tommen’s throne will be secure, and my twisted little valonqar will be short a head and rotting. (AFFC Cersei I)
~
Cersei had a sudden vision of the dwarf crawling out from behind a tapestry in Tommen’s bedchamber with blade in hand. Tommen is well guarded, she told herself. But Lord Tywin had been well guarded too. (AFFC Cersei I)
~
The younger queen whose coming she’d foretold was finished, and if that prophecy could fail, so could the rest. No golden shrouds, no valonqar, I am free of your croaking malice at last. (AFFC Cersei X)
Like in the previous parallel, Cersei's bad reactions are more justified due to the fact that prophecies come true in her world and due to her understandable sense of self-preservation.
This doesn't happen with Dany.
Both had unhappy marriages and believed that their spouses weren’t the right ones for them
Aerys II:
What Tywin Lannister made of this is not recorded, but in 266 AC, at Casterly Rock, Lady Joanna gave birth to a pair of twins, a girl and a boy, "healthy and beautiful, with hair like beaten gold." This birth only exacerbated the tension between Aerys II Targaryen and his Hand. "I appear to have married the wrong woman," His Grace was reported to have said, when informed of the happy event. (TWOIAF The Targaryen Kings: Aerys II)
Cersei:
“...Your father will find another man for you, a better man than Rhaegar.”
Her aunt had lied, though, and her father had failed her, just as Jaime was failing her now. Father found no better man. Instead he gave me Robert, and Maggy’s curse bloomed like some poisonous flower. If she had only married Rhaegar as the gods intended, he would never have looked twice at the wolf girl. Rhaegar would be our king today and I would be his queen, the mother of his sons.
She had never forgiven Robert for killing him. (AFFC Cersei V)
The major difference in this parallel, of course, is that Aerys raped his wife and Cersei was raped by her husband.
This doesn't happen with Dany.
Comparisons in the text between Aerys II and Cersei
"Let all of King's Landing see the flames. It will be a lesson to our enemies."
"Now you sound like Aerys."
Her nostrils flared. "Guard your tongue, ser." (AFFC Cersei III)
~
"Westeros is torn and bleeding, and I do not doubt that even now my sweet sister is binding up the wounds … with salt. Cersei is as gentle as King Maegor, as selfless as Aegon the Unworthy, as wise as Mad Aerys. She never forgets a slight, real or imagined. She takes caution for cowardice and dissent for defiance. And she is greedy. Greedy for power, for honor, for love. Tommen's rule is bolstered by all of the alliances that my lord father built so carefully, but soon enough she will destroy them, every one.” (ADWD Tyrion VI)
Again, as I said above, the comparisons between Cersei and Aerys II come from two of the people who have known Cersei the longest (Jaime, Tyrion).
Meanwhile, Dany is only called the Mad King’s daughter by her enemies (the slavers and Mace Tyrell). The characters who actually know her and the characters who have nothing to gain by defaming her (Barristan, Tyrion, Illyrio, Quentyn) reiterate that she’s nothing like him.

What are your thoughts on Jaehaerys and Alysanne?
Personally, I think Jae was a not as good as portrayed man/ruler. Master's were on his payroll given what we read in fire and blood. Poor Alysanne was always a secondary monarch and he refused to hear her at the worst moments. The things we've read in f&b about Jae that we're so horrible yet passed off as great. That Barth was so in love with him, like dude his wife left him 3 times for legit reasons and here is Barth just blowing bubbles. Also interesting is that all their children died except the ones away from them. Also I won't ever like Jaehaerys for making Otto hand of king.
Daemon was far better than Jae and daemyra rules, always.
Hi there 🤗 and sorry for the delay (this is going to turn into my catch phrase or something).
I think part of me agrees and the other part disagrees about Jaeherys.
I definitely think the fat man tries to sell Jaehaerys and Alysanne off as these perfect rulers/people and while they do have a lot of good things about them and they did a LOT of good to Westeros, I do think they are far from being exempt from criticism and maybe not as "light" as George thinks they are.
While Jaehaerys does get a lot of heat I do think he came into power in very hard circumstances and he handled most of his hardships in life quite well, doing a lot to improve the lives of the people of Westeros. Was he misogynistic? Yep, but so was pretty much everyone - especially men in Westeros - so I cannot really fault him too much there. And on that account I don't even think he was that bad tbh.
For instance, neither his daughter Daenerys nor his daughter Alyssa seemed to be particularly fond of female activities (e.g., both like to play with swords; both had more of a more outgoing rowdy personality not very fit for a princess). Yet in no instance do we see Jaehaerys trying to force them to be more feminine or forbidding them to play with their brothers or even complaining about them. Yes he did want all of his daughters married, but was that truly so different from what other fathers and men of Westeros - and even in our day and age - wanted? I don't think so.
I also give him a lot of credit to have waited to consummate his (first) marriage with Alysanne because he thought she was too young. Especially since at the time he was a teenage boy with his hormones raging (I assume XD). Here from what I have seen in the asoiaf universe, he was the exception not the rule, and we have a LOT of other examples where men did no such thing (e.g., Viserys with Aemma, Aegon II with Helaena, later Aerys II with Rhaella... these are just a few at the top of my head but I am sure there are a lot more examples).
And here I will call Alysanne to the stand because a lot of the things she blamed Jaehaerys for are rich in this popcorn's opinion.
Let's begin with the whole man versus woman ruler. So, for Alysanne a woman could rule just as well as a man, and primogeniture should determine who comes next in the line of succession... funny then that she did not speak in favor of her sister Rhaena to become queen, same with her niece Aerea, since according to what Alysanne believed, they would come before Jaehaerys in the line of succession, and before her children by him.
She seemed to have amnesia though, because then she pushed for her daughter Daenerys to be queen, and later for her granddaughter Rhaenys... very convenient in my humble opinion that she did this while ignoring her sister and niece.
Sex didn't matter according to Alysanne you see... when it was her line called into question.
Sorry but on this issue my eyebrow goes higher at Alysanne than it does at Jaehaerys. I think one of the traits I have less patience for is hypocrisy and Alysanne, you just blew my f_cking mind.
Not to mention that when the issue was between Viserys and Rhaenys, Jaehaerys didn't decide in his grandson's favour. Instead he called for a great council and let the lords of Westeros decide this matter. And here I give him several points. This was the right thing to do in my opinion. Was the right person chosen? I honestly don't know because while Walserys sucked we don't have any in-text evidence of Rhaenys as a ruler/manager of anything, so I don't know if she would have been better or not. I can speculate sure, but I will be basing most on headcanons not on actual canon. And another thing, in democracy is the right person always chosen? Nope, but I do believe it is the best system we have so far.
Another reason why Alysanne quarrelled with Jaehaerys was the issue with Daella, blaming him for her death. Several things to unpack here.
First, Daella was not marrying/getting pregnant young by asoiaf standards. She was eighteen when she died, I recall, and we have a lot of examples of women becoming mothers at seventeen (e.g., Rhaena, Rhaenys tqwnw, Rhaenyra, Alyssa...), and much younger as well (e.g., Aemma, Helaena, Rhaella, Daenerys, Naerys...). Second, as for her constitution, not only was that not unique - e.g., Dany and Naerys and Aemma - but women in House Targaryen seemed to have a 70% chance (I pulled this number from my backside but it's high) of dying in labour either they were more robust, or thinner, two examples at the top of my head of women not built small/thin but who still died in labour would be Alyssa and Laena.
I don't honestly think it was fair of Alysanne to blame Jaehaerys and the only thing I can side with her on was that there was no need to push Daella to be married if she didn't wanted to. But... at the same time it was what most fathers did, and in Jaehaerys's defense he did allow Daella to choose who she wanted, and she did seem to be quite happy in the Vale with Lord Rodrik Arryn.
And then, to make Alysanne's arguments even richer, we have her pushing for Viserra to be married and not even allowing her to choose who she wanted - unlike what her sisters were allowed to do. And sorry Aly, I am not giving you a pass on this one. Your behaviour was inexcusable.
But wait! There’s more!
Tumblr media
Funny that Alysanne was so outraged with Daella getting married at 16/17 and becoming a mother at 18, but crickets were heard about her granddaughter - Daella’s own daughter *gasp* - Aemma Arryn being married to Viserys at 11 (!!!) and bedded at 13 (!!!). Where was your outrage then Alysanne? Ah yes in the same place where the outrage at Rhaena and Aerea being ignored was, gotcha girl 😊
I know it might seem I don’t like Alysanne but I do. I just don’t let anyone escape with their bullsh_on my watch. This all being said and I do love Alysanne, she did a lot for the women and men of Westeros, and there’s a lot to like about her.
My heart went out to her suffering and I cried genuine tears when she mentioned how the Mother loved her children more than she did because she had taken so many of them.
Tumblr media
Regarding Saera I was not as shocked as most people might have been to be completely honest. I try to put myself in Jaehaerys's shoes and if my daughter/son told me like "Oh yeah I gave my V card to three dudes/chicks, what about it?". Hum... this would raise freaking too many red flags on the spot.
Tumblr media
I would not insult them - much less call them a whore - and I would mostly blame myself for it like yep... on a scale of 0 to 10 I failed an 11 with this child. At the same time, considering the universe these characters lived in I mean... what else would people want Jaehaerys to do? Honestly I even give him points for not beating her. This was NOT a kind universe to women.
Do I think he was too cold and went overboard? Yes absolutely. If he was a man of the XXI century would I find his behaviour disgusting? Absolutely yes. But he wasn't. And I am judging him according to his own universe not mine.
Final thought on this: Bad, but, in my view, nothing that makes him a monster or would make me lose my slept at night. I live in a fairly conservative country and let me tell you a lot of grandfathers/fathers I have known would have done much worse than Jaehaerys did - I am not saying it's right, it's not! Nevertheless, looking at the overall context it's not like he was behaving in an odd way or was being too cruel by his society’s norms.
All of this said and the thing I was most disgusted about concerning Jaehaerys was his take on the First Night, and in no small part was this because of his grade A+ hypocrisy. So, he sees no problem with it... but if it was another man taking Alysanne’s V card there would be an issue? This to me is some serious sh_t, because while he does realize this is wrong he’s very #notmyproblem about it. He does listen to Alysanne in the end but.. I mean... come on...
I really can’t stand people being hypocrites. Like own your sh_t, people.
Tumblr media
Now, comparing him to Daemon, I still think Jaehaerys was miles (many miles) ahead of Daemon and he was a far better ruler/person overall.
In my opinion the issue is just how the two are presented to us that actually makes Jaehaerys look worse, and Daemon look better.
When we are told about Jaehaerys we are told we are about to read about a man who was so wise, so good, #bestkingevah, so then when he falls short, our expectations aren’t fulfilled and we get angry. With Daemon on the other hand, there’s no hiding who he was. The narrator tells us we are about to read about a f_cking douchebag I mean he’s called the Rogue Prince... the bar is low so we aren’t expecting much and maybe we get to the end like “Well this wasn’t so bad...”
If the issue, however, is who of the two is more interesting, to me 100% it’s Daemon. And he’s the one who entertains me the more as well and who in my opinion is more memorable. But then again he’s maybe in the top 5 favourite characters ever so I am biased af XD
Final thoughts, I laughed so much when you said the maesters were on his payroll so thank you XD and I mean... you are 1000% right, they were, and I do admit maybe he comes off as so good because of it. Then again, the Greens show that there was just so much you could do when you had nothing to work with 😔😌 And about Otto, that we will never forgive Jaehaerys for. ✊✊✊✊✊✊
And YES DAEMYRA 4 EVER best and hottest ship ever ❤❤❤ #haterscry
All the best to you, Anon ❤😘 this was a really fun ask!
PS: I don’t mean to fat shame GRRM, but he did create Lysa after an ex-girlfriend, kills off almost every woman in labour, allowed them to ruin Dany, and is selling off to H*O so that grants everyone the right to refer to him as the fat man/the old man. Get f_cked, George.

AU: Aerys II and Rhaella, the kings of the new world (2/2)
Rhaegar I Targaryen- He was king of the Seven Kingdoms after the death of his father and kingdom for fifteen years full of prosperity, peace and a stable economy. Rhaegar was considered cultured, expert in weapons and intelligent being known as "The Harp King". His queen was Elia Nymeros Martell, the second Dornish woman to be queen consort of the Seven Kingdoms. Rhaegar's heirs were his sons Aegon VI and Rhaenys Targayen who his descendants were united with the lesser branches of the Targaryen house.
Rhaegar passed away in 309 A. C., at 50 years of age, his body was found lying next to his dragon Silverfire. It is believed that the king had a cardiac arrest while feeding his dragon or others that his soul fused with the dragon's being both one.
Shaena Targaryen- she was the second daughter of the kings and considered one of the most beautiful women in the Seven Kingdoms. At the request of her brother, Rhaegar Targaryen, Shaena was betrothed to Stannis Baratheon, the second son of Steffon Baratheon even though he did not have the possibility of inheriting Storm's End. Despite this, Aerys accepted the commitment because of the great friendship she had with Steffon Baratheon and because his brother, Robert Baratheon, refused to break his commitment to Lyanna Stark.
The marriage was stable and Stannis felt a certain passion for his beautiful wife with whom he could have four children: Steffon, Aegon, Vaegon and Rogar; and a daughter, Rhaelle. Despite her daughter not being Mistress of Storm's End, Rhaelle became Mistress by marrying her Lord cousin Orys Baratheon, son of Robert Baratheon and Lyanna Stark.
It is unknown when Shaena passed away, but it is believed that she may have died shortly after hers, her son Vaegon, after falling down the stairs and breaking his neck. Shaena probably died of grief.
Daeron Targaryen- He was commander of the City Guard during the reign of his father and his brother. He married Lady Lysa Tully, daughter of Hoster Tully in an alliance to win favor with the Tully. Although his wife came to love him, Daeron had several lovers and it is believed that one of them was his sister Shaena, but it has not been confirmed. Lysa gave Daeron two daughters, Minisa and Shaera, even though Daeron had many illegitimate children it is known that he came to love his daughters whom he called "My pussy" and "My sun."
Daeron passed away in 300 A. C., at 31 years of age being stabbed by a servant who was trying to steal some jewels from the dowager queen Rhaella. His body was cremated and his ashes lie alongside those of his family.
Aegon Targaryen- He was the most unknown son of the kings and considered the least interesting. It is known that he was the least favorite son of Aerys II and therefore Aegon was sent to Antigua to become a master even though he maintained contact with his mother and his brother, Rhaegar.
Aegon had a close relationship with his uncle Aemon Targaryen, who was a master in the Night's Watch and through letters advised the young man on the work of the church, the septon, and the maesters.
Jaehaerys Targaryen- He was the king's favorite son and the hearsay counselor of his brother, Rhaegar I. He was considered as attractive as his brother Rhaegar, but Jaehaerys had shared a bed with women since his teens.
He married the daughter of the king's hand, Cersei Lannister and both were very attracted to each other, but when his wife got pregnant Jaehaerys sought out other lovers which infuriated Cersei.
It is legend that the prince and his lady argued heatedly over Jaehaerys extramarital affairs, but it is also known that they had passionate reconciliations from which seven children were born: Aerys, Tywin, Daena, Shiera, Joanna, Jaime and Aegon.
It is believed that her children Shiera and Jaime were not the prince's since it is known that Cersei had some encounters with other men and one of them is believed to be her own brother, Jaime Lannister.
Jaehaerys passed away in 313 A. C., at 39 years of chickenpox, but it is believed that he was poisoned by his own wife, Cersei in revenge for the infidelities. His sons Aerys and Tywin passed away from gray psoria and his daughters Daena and Shiera joined House Lannister.
Viserys Targaryen- He was an advisor to the edicts of King Rhaegar I and the favorite son of his mother, Rhaella. He was considered a young man very similar to his mother, calm, quiet and obedient, but with the passing of time he became a more confident, faithful and sometimes impatient man, but he is always remembered as a faithful brother.
He married her little sister, Daenerys with whom he felt great affection and little by little he began to feel attracted to her. The two were married in 298 A. C., and it is known that their marriage was passionate and calm, having four children in common: Visenya, Rhaena, Alyssa and Vaegar.
Viserys was forced to leave his post as edicts counselor because of his fragile health and it was discovered that he suffered from gout. In the year 317 A. C., Viserys fell down the stairs, killing himself in the fall at the age of 41.
Daenerys Targaryen- Known as "the mother of dragons" she was the most popular daughter of the kings since thanks to her the dragons returned to her life.
The princess herself always felt a great fascination for dragons, which had disappeared centuries ago. It wasn't until 293 A. C., when she was executed by a young man for stealing from the crown and it was decided to burn at the stake. In those moments, Daenerys put a dragon egg and when the flames stopped taking the condemned man, a baby dragon hatched being a miracle for everyone who looked. The princess took the dragon in her hands and named it "Balerion" in honor of the Black Terror.
After the death of her father and the coronation of her brother Rhaegar, he appointed her as a dragon breeder, the princess being in charge of taking care of the dragons and their eggs.
Daenerys got married in 298 A. C., with her brother Viserys Targaryen with whom she was more united and they had four children in common to whom she was full of love, in addition to giving each one a dragon egg.
In the year 317 A. C., her husband brother Viserys passed away and Daenerys mourned him for a year, but the rest of her life she had some secret lovers and the best known was Daario Naharis, a mercenary from Tyrosh whom the princess met while flying through the Free Cities. on his dragon, Balerion. This romance was a scandal for her kingdom and Rhaegar forbade Daenerys to visit Yunkai, in addition to threatening to take her to a convent and the princess agreed to leave Daario to be with her children.
In 333 A. C., Daenerys and her dragon Balerion mysteriously disappeared along with three dragon eggs, creating the legend that the mother of dragons has become a protective deity of dragons casting curses on those who dare to hurt or kill the dragons and their offspring .
(If in this Universe Rhaegar does not screw up with the theme of the three heads of the dragon, Rhaella's dead children live and Viserys is not the paranoid and cruel brother seen in the books)

I had this fic idea where: Calla, Haegon, their mother and youngest siblings didn't escape and they were taken as hostages in the Red Keep. Calla kind of ends up "playing the game" and trying to forge a better life for her mom and siblings while trying to overcome her trauma of losing her brothers and dead, her anxiety over Daemon II not being around and not having any contact with him and Haegon most likely going to the faith. And she also has survivors guilt. Basically this is a "Calla plays the game while trying to survive" (this includes her glaring at BR and lowkey planning his death, finding Matarys endearing because he's actually fairly nice and so is his brother/dad, she also looks like her mom. OH AND SHE DYES HER HAIR QUITE OFTEN)
Basically my question was: how much would have changed if Calla, Haegon and their mom and younger siblings didn't get to escape?
That’s a really interesting, elaborate fic idea, dearxstorm! If you end up writing it, make sure to link me and I’ll write a comment! Calla has the potential to be an interesting character, and your characterization of her in the prompt sort of lines up with my own (having the Sweetness hiding Steel personality); I like the idea of a psychological story of her dealing with the loss of her family while trapped in a court that hates her at best. I also like your headcanon that she dyes her hair, because it’s a physical identification with her mother’s people; all too often, in asoiaf as in other works of fantasy, the heroes of noble families identify more with their father’s house at the expense of their mother’s (the young Starks identify more with their father’s house to a lesser degree than the others, but even the young Greyjoys are krakens rather than Harlaws, the young Martells don’t consider themselves half-Norvosi, forget about Aegon V + siblings identifying themselves as something other than the blood of the dragon), and it’s the villains that tend to include parts of their mother’s heritage (the Baratheons of king’s landing include a lion in their sigil, the Greens from the Dance of Dragons owed their initial success to their Hightower mother). In addition, Essosi women are almost to a woman treated horribly in Westeros; divorced (Mellario, Larra), exiled (Rohanne), or tortured and killed (Mysaria, Tyanna, Serala, Serenei), so it’s great you decided to single out Rohanne’s Essosi influence on her children as something neutral to positive.
As for your question about what would happen if Calla+family didn’t manage to escape, I asked warsofasoiaf about it years ago; his response that Bl00draven would’ve had them all killed, while certainly in-character (his consistent character trait is harming boys to accomplish his goals), isn’t particularly satisfying for writing a fanfic with these characters. We see Da3ron II took lands and hostages from those who knelt; Lord Bracken’s son died during the Great Spring Sickness, perhaps as a hostage in King’s Landing; Eustace Osgrey’s daughter and only heir Alysanne was sent to the Silent Sisters at age 7, while Standfast went from a prominent lordly house to one of landed knights. Daemon’s lands and titles were likely under attainder, being of fairly recent creation. In Westeros, killing (mostly male heirs) or sending to the Faith (more likely female heirs) the child rivals to one’s lordly power seems to be the norm (most infamously Aegon and Rhaenys Targaryen on Tywin’s orders, but also Cerelle Lannister by her uncle Gerold, Rohanne and Cerelle Tarbeck were sent to the Silent Sisters and Rohanne’s young son was likely murdered during the Reyne Rebellion, the extermination of Houses Darklyn and Hollard bar one after the Defiance of Duskendale). So I tried to look at examples from medieval history to see if I could save the younger Blackfyre boys:
As much grief as I give GRRM for not being historically accurate while claiming he’s true to life, the gendered fate of young male and female rivals who were captured seems to pass muster: with boys usually being killed or “disappeared” (Arthur of Brittany was imprisoned then murdered by his uncle King John of England, the Princes in the Tower mysteriously vanished with the prime suspect as their uncle Richard III) and girls either imprisoned (Arthur’s sister Eleanor was imprisoned for 44 years until her death by her uncle John and cousin Henry), forced into a convent (Gwenllian Princess of Wales by Edward I, Joanna la Beltraneja was given a choice between this or marrying her infant cousin Juan by his mother Isabella of Castile), or married to steal their lands/unite claims (Arthur’s mother Constance was betrothed to his father from age 5 after her brother was forcibly disinherited from the duchy of Brittany, and I’m still not sure what happened to him; Eleanor de Montfort was eventually married to Llewellyn of Wales after she was captured and imprisoned by the English).
I think the best hope for the Blackfyre boys is for them be rescued and taken to Tyrosh (although Bl00draven would probably try to separate them to prevent all of them taken at once).
A longer-term option is for Rohanne’s relatives in Tyrosh to try to negotiate their release, probably with a solemn oath never to return to Westeros (happened with the Charles VII’s cousin Charles Duke of Orleans who spent 25 years in various English prisons after his capture by the English at Agincourt until his old rivals the Burgundians negotiated his release; Amaury de Montfort, despite having taken holy vows, was captured along with his sister Eleanor and only by swearing never to return to England and the Pope plus Llewellyn intervening was he released).
Failing that, maybe Baelor Breakspear could try to go ‘the Dontos Hollard route’, asking for clemency out of the boys’ age/birth, and sending them to King’s Landing as squires, and probably make sure they don’t return to their old lands. I doubt they’d be allowed to wed, but I suppose Rohanne could petition for a restoration of Daemon’s old lands to House Blackfyre (as Anne Scott managed to save her lands from her husband Duke James’ attainder after the Monmouth rebellion, and her two surviving sons by him were able to marry and inherit and were loyal to the crown), and they could be wed into a loyal Red house of Da3ron’s choosing; it’d be her grandchildren inheriting these lands (Elizabeth I imprisoned her cousin Katherine Grey for the rest of her life for secretly marrying and had her separated from her two sons, but they were allowed to marry and her grandson became the next Duke of Somerset, despite his family reputation). Not Daemon II if he’s been captured with the others, but possibly Aenys. I’m not saying this is a likely scenario considering the characterization of Bl00draven and the actions of Da3ron II to the other children of rebels, but it’s a kinder solution that maybe Baelor might come up with.
I don’t imagine that these boys will be sent to the Faith, but rather the Night’s Watch seems to be the place for defeated rebels/men sentenced to death; so in all likelihood at least the elder ones could be sent to the Night’s Watch once they’re old enough. Westeros as well as medieval history has shown how easy it could be to take someone from a convent/monastery and use them to take their lands/incite a rebellion (Robar abducting Rhaella from the Faith; Marie of Boulogne was abducted from her convent by Matthew of Alsace to forcibly marry him to steal her lands), plus these vows can be undone (at least in medieval Italy, where sometimes cardinals had to leave the Church to get married to continue their family line; it’s implied in the sentences of Lucinda and Priscella that septas can break their vows) so I think at least the elder ones would not be allowed.
The Blackfyre girls have a higher chance of not being murdered. The worst case-scenario that I could unfortunately see happening is sending them to the Silent Sisters along with poor Alysanne Osgrey, which seems to happen to the most dangerous of noblewomen (rebel queen Marla Sunderland, sasser-of-kings Maris Baratheon, Ellyn Reyne’s daughters Rohanne and Cerelle), all potential heiresses for another rebellion (not likely with so many brothers, but if they manage to escape and another uprising coalesces around them who knows). Another option would be to the Faith to be septas, which happened to more minor noblewomen men wanted out of the way (Rhaella and Megette’s daughters for their “inconvenient birth”, Lucinda Penrose and Priscella Hogg for their roles in the plot to kill Daenaera).
A particularly painful scenario would be confining them in the Maidenvault until/if a new king decides to release them as their grandmother Daena was. Considering that the next king is Aerys, I doubt they would be released (like Eleanor of Brittany) or marry
It seems not uncommon in Westeros for an ambitious man to marry an heiress of the previous ruler to become suo jure lord of her lands (Tyrek Lannister’s marriage to the infant Lady Ermesande Hayford, Dickon Tarly’s marriage to Eleanor Mooton, Lancel’s marriage to Amerei Frey to steal Darry, and most famously Orys Baratheon’s forcible marriage to Argella Durrandon). The problem with doing this in regards to the Blackfyre girls is that considering their father’s lands are probably under attainder, they don’t have lands to inherit, much less a dowry. Of course, Rohanne could try to petition for a creation of new lands, possibly in exchange for giving up their claim to the throne (Princess Renee of France gave up her claim to the duchy of Brittany in exchange for being made duchess of Chartres by King Francis I, so she could finally be allowed to marry). Another idea would be to send them abroad for matches to Essosi cities the Reds have ties to, such as Lys and Pentos. In a happy scenario, the Blackfyre girls were allowed to marry with permission; to show that Da3ron is serious about healing the realm, he or Baelor could betrothe Calla and Matarys (not expected to inherit the throne; your prompt said they were getting along!). What happens after his death in the Great Spring Sickness is anyone’s guess.
In the edgy scenario, the girls marry without permission, possibly to a Velaryon descendant of Baela’s (just going by my theory of at least some Velaryons as Blackfyre supporters); it seems in medieval England that some potential female claimants to the crown did marry secretly to men with more distant claims (Lady Katherine Grey as mentioned before, but also Lady Arabella Stuart two generations later, to Grey’s own grandson), thus frustrating the desires of their monarchs to marry them abroad. Sometimes they were able to escape their captors and raise their children in exile, eventually allowed to return to their home country; the most famous of these was Margaret Beaufort and her son Henry, who later won the English throne by right of conquest with weak dynastic claim.
A lot of these scenarios ignore the canonical cruelty of Bl00draven and the vindictiveness of Da3ron with regards to the Blackfyres and their supporters; I don’t imagine that they would show mercy to the defeated rebels, and warsofasoiaf’s scenario that they would all be secretly murdered is definitely a possibility. They also ignore Rohanne’s characterization (such that it is) of a take-charge noblewoman who was in my opinion unquestionably a pro-Blackfyre rebel that used her money and influence in Tyrosh to provide a home for the exiles and orchestrated their escape (the idea that Aegor Rivers helped Rohanne escape to her own country seems to diminish her achievements); I don’t think she would be asking the Targaryens for any favors, considering in canon she knew them well enough that she preferred to flee than surrender to the House that gave Bl00draven high office. Barring the “Bl00draven kills them all” scenario, I don’t think she would be executed due to her sex and that she’s from foreign nobility (especially if her male relative was still Archon), but we have no idea if the Faith is an option for her (did she convert? Considering the characterization of GRRM’s other Essosi women as holding to their homeland’s traditions, I doubt it); it’s likely to me she would be separated from her children, who would be governed by Red supporters (maybe if Rhaena is still alive, she could coach the girls?), an emotionally hard punishment for her (considering all of her canonical actions involve her children, it seems she loved them very much). It’s possible she might be sent back to Tyrosh as a gesture of goodwill to her family, after some years of confinement; or she could be sent to a remote location, like Cassandra Baratheon upon a forced marriage to Walter Brownhill.
tl;dr If the Blackfyres and Rohanne aren’t going to be murdered after being captured: the boys would likely go to the Night’s Watch once old enough, or imprisoned in the Red Keep and married under ideal conditions; the girls might go to the Faith, imprisoned in the Maidenvault, married off to non-Tyroshi Essosi, or secretly married; Rohanne would likely be briefly imprisoned, separated from her children, and either sent to the remote countryside or Tyrosh. What happens to them depends on how merciful the Reds are feeling, and how much of a risk they deem them to be. Just expect that if someone leads a rebellion in their name, for the boys to die.

Hi, I'm curious about your opinion on a seldom discussed asoiaf matter: Rhaegar Targaryen's relationship with his mother, Rhaella. It's bugging me since there's little to no mention of it in any of the books. Safe to assume that Viserys was close to her, her crown was his last joy according to Dany. Dany herself sadly doesn't count, she only has stories about their mom. But Rhaegar has plenty of years. He must have seen her misery as well. Surely he didn't just stand aside and did nothing right?
It's a seldom discussed matter for a reason, we simply don't have enough material on their relationship and only mere snippets on them entirely. I have opinions and views of my own, but none of them are fully backed up by canon- because the info just doesn’t exist :(
Rhaegar was born to thirteen-year old Rhaella during the Tragedy at Summerhall- an event that was said to overshadow him throughout his life. As per royal etiquette, I can only assume that baby Rhaegar was brought up by wetnurses and tutored by maesters as a child, with limited access to his mother. This would have been exacerbated by the fact that within the first eleven years of Rhaegar’s life, Rhaella lost FIVE babies. Her role was to provide Aerys with heirs and spares, and for a very long time, it ended in grief. I’m sure Rhaegar would have known of his mother’s misery, but there’s literally nothing to illustrate that point. Royal children did not share the same maternal relationship as children today, and whilst I’m certain Rhaella loved her firstborn, I just don’t know if they were super close on account of her losses, as well as Aerys’ increasing madness.
I’ve done some rambling below the cut just to try and explore this further. Hope it makes sense lol!
To start off with, Rhaella and Aerys’ marriage was never a happy one. Aerys was unfaithful, and Rhaella clearly disapproved.
Sadly, the marriage between Aerys II Targaryen and his sister, Rhaella, was not as happy; though she turned a blind eye to most of the king’s infidelities, the queen did not approve of his “turning my ladies into his whores.”
This led Rhaella to eventually dismiss her friend and lady-in-waiting Joanna Lannister, who as everyone knows, married Aerys’ Hand, Tywin Lannister. Her marriage suffered as did her health when she lost 5 babies in a ten year period.
Relations between the king and queen grew even more strained when Rhaella proved unable to give Aerys any further children. Miscarriages in 263 and 264 were followed by a stillborn daughter born in 267. Prince Daeron, born in 269, survived for only half a year. Then came another stillbirth in 270, another miscarriage in 271, and Prince Aegon, born two turns premature in 272, dead in 273.
This tidbit had escaped me entirely but when Tytos Lannister died in 267AC, Tywin returned west and Aerys accompanied him with Rhaegar.
Though His Grace left the queen behind in King’s Landing (Her Grace was pregnant with the child who proved to be the stillborn Princess Shaena), he took their eight-year-old son Rhaegar, Prince of Dragonstone, and more than half the court. For the better part of the next year, the Seven Kingdoms were ruled from Lannisport and Casterly Rock, where both the king and his Hand were in residence…
This highlights a period of almost a year where Rhaella and Rhaegar were separated. Again, I can only assume they missed each other- as any mother and child would- but nothing is written of it. It was also during this time that Aerys’ relationship with Rhaella began to show cracks.
At first His Grace comforted Rhaella in her grief, but over time his compassion turned to suspicion. By 270 AC, he had decided that the queen was being unfaithful to him…
Aerys began imposing restrictions on Rhaella at this stage, forbidding her to leave Maegor’s Holdfast and having two septas share her bed. This probably extended to her relationship with Rhaegar too, sadly.
The march of the king’s madness seemed to abate for a time in 274 AC, when Queen Rhaella gave birth to a son. So profound was His Grace’s joy that it seemed to restore him to his old self once again … but Prince Jaehaerys died later that same year, plunging Aerys into despair….
Nothing is mentioned of Rhaegar during these troubling times, but again, I can only assume he was kept separate from the inner workings of the queen’s court and wasn’t fully exposed to his mother’s troubles. We also know he was a solitary child during his early years and preferred books until the age of ten when he decided to take up arms too. He was seventeen when Viserys was born, and was “everything that could be wanted in an heir apparent” and yet it was still overcast by Aerys’ deteriorating mental health. It’s also worthy of note that once Rhaegar came of age, his role in the workings of the court would have increased; he may have sat at council meetings and been prepared for the role of heir. This paired with the fact that he continued to read, train vigorously, and travel to Summerhall on his own indicates that he didn’t really have much of a “family environment” to speak of. I always wonder where he got his love of music from, and I’d like to think Rhaella enjoyed his sad songs and harp skills- but again, WE DON’T KNOW :’(
The birth of Prince Viserys only seemed to make Aerys II more fearful and obsessive, however. Though the new young princeling seemed healthy enough, the king was terrified lest he suffer the same fate as his brothers… Even the queen herself was forbidden to be alone with the infant…
I don’t think Rhaella and Viserys were as close as could be hoped during Viserys’ early childhood. Aerys was extremely paranoid, particularly after the defiance of Duskendale which broke him irrevocably and turned him against his wife and heir.
Convinced that the smallfolk and lords were plotting against his life and fearing that even Queen Rhaella and Prince Rhaegar might be part of these plots, he reached across the narrow sea to Pentos and imported a eunuch named Varys to serve as his spymaster…
Similarly, when Rhaegar wed Elia in 280AC, Aerys did not attend, nor did he allow Viserys to attend. Since there’s no mention of Rhaella being prohibited, we can safely assume that she was in attendance.
They were wed the following year, in a lavish ceremony at the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing, but Aerys II did not attend. He told the small council that he feared an attempt upon his life if he left the confines of the Red Keep, even with his Kingsguard to protect him. Nor would he allow his younger son, Viserys, to attend his brother’s wedding…
Rhaegar and Elia took up residence on Dragonstone after the wedding, presumably because Rhaegar and Aerys were definitely at odds at this stage and rumours and paranoia were rampant. There were talks of Aerys possibly disinheriting Rhaegar, Rhaegar deposing Aerys etc. Again, no clue on how Rhaella would have felt about this- but you can probably guess! The only slight snippet we have is when Rhaegar presented Rhaenys in court.
When Prince Rhaegar returned to the Red Keep to present his daughter to his own mother and father, Queen Rhaella embraced the babe warmly…
This certainly gives us an insight to how pleased Rhaella would have been to be a grandma, so I can imagine this reunion would have been very dear to her too. Fast forward to the Tourney at Harrenhal, neither Rhaella or Viserys were present, and had been left behind at the Red Keep. During the Rebellion, we know Rhaegar meant to win the war and bring about change- for his own family too, “... changes will be made. I meant to do it long ago, but... well, it does no good to speak of roads not taken…”
But when Rhaegar was slain at the Trident,
When the word reached court, Aerys packed the queen off to Dragonstone with Prince Viserys…
Nothing is mentioned of her reaction to her firstborn’s death (but we can imagine) nor the nine months Rhaella and Viserys spent together, but it must have been a time fraught with worry and fear as King’s Landing fell and House Targaryen was unmade. I feel most deeply for Rhaella’s life, and I wish we had more detail on her direct relationship with her children- particularly Rhaegar- but alas, there is not much to work with. All I can say is, despite her woes and losses and the abuse she suffered, Rhaella was a strong woman, she held her own and was dignified until the end. I’m certain she adored all her children, and the pain she suffered throughout her life affected her acutely, but she remained with her faculties intact and was able to possess the fortitude to carry Daenerys to full-term and deliver her safely, before sadly perishing herself.
RIP Rhaella, your daughter is amazing and you would be so proud of her, and Rhaegar’s legacy also lives on. VIVA LA HOUSE TARGARYEN!!!! I really hope this answered your question, if not, it certainly made me sad AF to research all this.

Queen Rhaella Targaryen was the daughter of King Jaehaerys II Targaryen and her sister wife Queen Shaera Targaryen. At the urging of her father, she became the wife of her brother Aerys.
When she was still a princess, her ladies-in-waiting included Joanna Lannister and Prince Doran Martell's mother. Joanna had arrived in the capital in A.D. 259. to attend the coronation of Jaehaerys II Targaryen and stayed as princess Rhaella's maiden.
Before getting married, Princess Rhaella was madly in love with Ser Bonifer Hasty, who wore her garment and won a tournament, naming her Queen of Love and Beauty. They had a brief but passionate romance until Ser Bonifer was considered a very low birth to a Targaryen princess.
At the behest of a forest witch friend of Jenny of Oldstones, then-Prince Jaehaerys decided to marry his teenage children; King Aegon V, in disagreement, washed his hands in frustration. According to Ser Barristan Selmy, there was no affection between Aerys and Rhaella on the day of their marriage.
After the Summer Refuge Tragedy, which occurred in 259 AD. and where King Aegon V and his eldest son Prince Duncan the Younger died, Aerys became the crown prince, with Rhaella as his future queen. On the day of the tragedy, Rhaella gave birth to her first child, Rhaegar. Aerys and Rhaella were young and it was anticipated that they would have many children, a matter of vital importance at the time, when the possible heirs to the Targaryen House had dwindled to an alarming number.
The marriage between Rhaella and Aerys was very unhappy. Although Rhaella turned a blind eye to most of her husband's infidelities, the queen could not bear to make her maids her lovers. The relationship between the king and queen was further strained as Rhaella was unable to give Aerys more children. Queen Rhaella had miscarriages in 263 and 264 AD, followed by Princess Shaena, stillborn in 267 AD. Prince Daeron, born in 269 AD, survived only half a year. Then came another child born dead in A.D. 270, another miscarriage in A.D. 271. and Prince Aegon, born two months premature in 272 A.D. and died the following year. At first, the king comforted Rhaella in his pain but over time his compassion became suspicious. By 270 AD, King Aerys II had decided that the queen was unfaithful to him and that this was the reason why he could not give her another child; She claimed that none of the stillborn children, abortions, and stillbirths had been fathered by her.
Thereafter, Aerys II prohibited Rhaella from leaving the Maegor Keep and decreed that two septas would share their bed each night so that the queen remained faithful to her vows.
During the following years, the behavior of King Aerys II became increasingly erratic, although it seemed to decrease in 274 AD. when Queen Rhaella gave birth to a son. So deep was Aerys' joy that she seemed to restore her former character. However, Prince Jaehaerys died later that same year, plunging Aerys into despair. In his rage he decided that the prince's nurse was to blame for his death and beheaded the woman. Not long afterward Aerys announced that Jaehaerys had been poisoned by his own lover, the pretty young daughter of one of his knights. The king tortured the girl and all her relatives; Before dying, everyone confessed to the murder, although the details of their confessions did not match.
In 275 A.D. King Aerys fasted for fifteen days and made a "walk of repentance" throughout the city to the Great Sept of Baelor to pray with the Supreme Septum. Upon his return, the king announced that he would henceforth only sleep with his legitimate wife, Queen Rhaella. This new fidelity was apparently well received by the Mother because the following year Queen Rhaella gave the king another son. Prince Viserys, born AD 276, was small but robust and more handsome than any child King's Landing had ever seen. However, the birth of Prince Viserys failed to change the behavior of the king; He became even more obsessive and fearful, even going so far as to put knights of the Royal Guard to see that no one touched the baby without his consent, not even Queen Rhaella.
In 280 AD, when Prince Rhaegar returned to the Red Fort to introduce his parents to their first daughter, Princess Rhaenys, Queen Rhaella welcomed the baby fondly while King Aerys refused to touch or hold the girl, complaining that "it smelled of Dorniense".
In later years, the relationship between Rhaella and her husband deteriorated. They only slept together when Aerys had executed and burned someone; Jaime Lannister recalled that burning someone always turned Aerys on. The last time was when Aerys burned Lord Qarlton Chelsted; Ser Jaime heard Rhaella cry as she was abused. The next day, she was sent to Dragonstone to escape the imminent King's Landing site by the rebels during the Usurper's War. Her maids said there were bruises, bite marks, and scratches all over the queen's body.
In Dragonstone the queen found out she was pregnant. When the capital fell two weeks later, she, her unborn son, and little Prince Viserys were the last known survivors of the Targaryen Dynasty. When news of the looting of King's Landing was heard, Rhaella proclaimed Viserys king. The queen spent her entire pregnancy on Dragonstone, where she gave birth to her second daughter, Daenerys. She died shortly after the stress of childbirth.
I do not have much to say, she deserved a better life than to be with a man without love and who became more and more violent, more paranoid and wilder. At least she has the consolation that her daughter and her possible grandson fought for their rightful throne, in the end she sowed the future of House Targaryen.

daenerys is the only daughter and youngest child of king aerys ii targaryen, the "mad king", and his sister-wife, rhaella. her father died during the sack of king's landing before she was even born. the usurper robert baratheon installed himself as king, having defeated aerys in the conquest known as robert's rebellion. her pregnant mother and brother viserys, fled to the island of dragonstone, the ancestral home of house targaryen, to escape robert. daenerys's brother rhaegar targaryen was killed in the war by robert. the forces of house lannister murdered rhaegar's wife, elia martell, and their children, rhaenys and aegon, during the sack of king's landing. as a baby, she was taken into exile in the free cities with her brother, viserys, who regularly abused her growing up. as a young woman, she is forced to marry dothraki horselord khal drogo in exchange for an army for viserys, who wishes to return to westeros and recapture the iron throne. she served a brief tenure as the de facto queen of the andals and the first men and the twenty-first ruler of the seven kingdoms, after claiming the throne from her predecessor cersei i lannister, who was killed in the battle of king's landing. however, she was never formally crowned, nor did she sit upon the iron throne. daenerys eventually succumbed to the "targaryen madness" of her ancestors after a series of terrible personal losses, grief, and betrayal.

my portrayal will be a mixture of the books and the show. i honestly hate where they took dany’s storyline in the show, so i will not be incorporating the “mad queen” plot. she does not remember burning king’s landing or her death at the hands of jon snow. her canon is taken directly after the battle of winterfell. believing that she died during the battle, dany wakes up in a strange new time and place. thinking it’s the afterlife, she has adjusted as well as can be expected of someone from her world, which is not all that well yet. she is delighted to find that her three dragons ( drogon, rhaegal, and viserion ) are here with her, though they are once again babies. she currently works as a veterinary technician.
