You woke up in a strange room, not knowing where you were. Now that you think about it, you couldn't really remember how you got there, or why you were hooked up to a bunch of machines. You tried to sit up, but it caused your entire body to ache.

Suddenly, an unfamiliar woman walks into the room with food in hand. When she sees that you are awake, she practically throws the food to the side and rushes to your bedside. "Oh my god, you're awake!"

You feel like you should remember who she is, but no matter how much you push yourself, nothing comes up. Seeing the apprehensive look on your face, the woman backs up slightly. "Are you okay, honey? It's just me." You scan her face one more time before finally asking, "I'm sorry, who are you?" She laughs before seeing the seriousness in your eyes.

"What do you mean? It's me, Jenna. Your fianceè." You shake your head, making Jenna look even more concerned. "I'm sorry, I really don't know who you are. I don't even know who I am." That makes Jenna begin to freak out, and she calls a nurse into the room.

A woman comes running into the room with a man in a white lab coat, who you quickly figure out is your doctor. Jenna quietly explains what is going on to him, and he looks at you clinically but also with some concern in his eyes. He approaches you slowly with his hands raised, as if you are a wild animal backed in a corner, and he begins to talk.

"Hey there, Y/N. My name is Dr. Kemp, and I am the man who is treating you. Right now, you are in NYU Langone in New York City. You were involved in a car accident and you sustained a head injury that put you in a coma for about a week. We're glad you're safe and awake. Do you remember anything?"

You begin to remember some things, mostly your name and where you are from. Suddenly, the moment that sent you to the hospital comes crashing back. It causes you to begin to panic, which makes the nurse and doctor spring into action. They calm you down and sit you up again, making sure you are okay.

You clear your throat, trying to formulate your words. "I remember some stuff. I can recall my childhood, most things about myself, and the accident. But I really can't remember her. I'm sorry." This makes Jenna choke out a sob, and you look at her with apologetic eyes. You know it isn't your fault, but you wish that you could force yourself to find the memories.

Jenna stands up quickly, muttering something about getting some air before practically running out of the hospital room. You sit there, wishing that you could make things better. If only you could remember.

"-And they don't remember anything about us. Our entire relationship is gone. We've been together since senior year. They're the love of my life, and they don't even remember me. What the fuck am I supposed to do?" Jenna cries into her phone. On the other end, Emma Myers tries to calm her down. "Jenna. Since when do you just give up? You have so many memories from over the years, so show them to them. Bring them back to us."

Jenna thinks about it before nodding with renewed determination. She quickly hangs up, apologizing and saying that there was something that she had to do. She then ran to her car, quickly driving off towards your house.

Meanwhile, you are sitting in your room, praying that Jenna comes back. You hoped that she wouldn't give up on you, and in the meantime, you would work on getting the flashes of your life back in focus. You sat there, trying to concentrate when Jenna came running back into the room with a posterboard and a box.

You watch her, confused, as she sets her stuff up on the table in front of you. When she pulls some photographs and loose items out of the box, you realize what she is about to do. She stands in front of you before clearing her throat and starting.

"My name is Jenna Ortega. I am an actress, and I am your fianceè. You are Y/N Y/L/N, and you are the love of my life. We met in our freshman year of high school, and we became best friends." She hands you a picture that you quickly realize is the two of you at a young age, standing together and grinning at the person behind the camera.

"I started acting when I was only nine, but I was on this show called Stuck in the Middle when I was twelve. I continued to play that character until I was fifteen, which intersected with when I met you. You were always my biggest cheerleader, and you supported me no matter what. I quickly developed a crush on you, but I could never tell you how I felt. I carried that flame for you all the way through sophomore and junior year, and well into senior year. You had started to flirt with me, more heavily than you normally would, towards the end of junior year, but you hadn't ever done anything. Senior year was when you finally asked me out."

You let that sit for a second before a memory comes back to you.

You were normally a calm, cool, and collected person. That was a part of your charm, and it was what made girls flock to you. You liked the attention, but only one girl could make you weak in the knees and make you lose your indifferent demeanor. Jenna fuckin' Ortega. Your best friend, and your crush since the end of sophomore year.

Until the end of junior year, you thought that there was no way in hell that she would ever like you back, but then you started to notice little things. She would stare at your lips while you were talking, she watched you all the time and when you caught her she would look away, blushing, and whenever you playfully flirted with her she got incredibly flustered.

You decided that you should shoot your shot, and all you could do was hope that this doesn't ruin your friendship.

You sit back for a second with a shocked expression on your face, before you smiled at her. Jenna looks at you, slightly confused, before she realizes what had just happened. "Do you remember?" You smile and nod, before frowning slightly.

"Not everything. I honestly can't remember asking you out. I just remember deciding to. But I remember you, Jenna." Her smile doesn't falter, as she is just happy that you remember her now. She continues on with her presentation, hoping to jog the rest of your memory of your relationship.

"I said yes, and we've been together ever since. We've had our ups and downs, but it's been amazing overall. Now, you proposed to me about two months ago, in our apartment bedroom. We haven't told the public about our relationship just yet, so you couldn't do it in a public space. It was super romantic, so of course I said yes. I was so happy that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with me, and it almost got taken away from us because of your accident. I just need you to remember, because I can't lose you."

You smile tearily at her, before you are hit full force with the weight of your relationship.

Being with Jenna was the greatest thing that had ever happened to you. You realized that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with her, and you quickly decided to propose. Not knowing what ring to get her, you called her sister and Emma to come and help you. They helped you choose the perfect ring to propose with, and you quickly ran home to get set up. You put flower petals on the ground, and you lit candles, and you got fancy champagne and food. When Jenna got home, she saw everything set up, and she was pretty confused.

She quickly walked into your room, where she found you pacing and muttering to yourself in a suit and tie. She cleared her throat, making you whip around and exclaim, "Oh shit, you're early." She gives you a confused look, before looking around and trying to put two and two together.

"Are you cheating on me?" She knows that her question is dumb, and that you would never, but she doesn't know what else to think. The laugh that you let out makes all of the panic in Jenna's body leave, before you step up to her and hold her face in your hands. "I'm not cheating on you, baby. I just..." You clear your throat before getting down on one knee.

Jenna's confusion grows until you pull out a ring and hold it out in front of you. She gasps and begins to tear up. You let out a wet laugh before saying, "I love you more than anything, Jenna. We've been best friends since freshman year, and that has never changed. Sometimes I like to tell people that the only thing that changed about our relationship was that we make out now." That makes Jenna let out a laugh, and you smile up at her. "I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So, Jenna Marie Ortega, will you marry me?"

Jenna nods and exclaims, "Yes! Of course!" You quickly jump up and pull her into a tight bear hug before sliding the ring onto her finger. You then kiss her passionately, making her sigh into your mouth. You were engaged to Jenna fuckin' Ortega.

You stop Jenna quickly before waving her over and pulling her into a kiss. When you pull back, Jenna is now on the hospital bed next to you. You rest your head on hers, and you whisper, "I remember. I remember it all."

You see her smile, and you know that finally, all is right in her and your world.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who is presiding over the Trump election interference case, donated to county prosecutor Fani Willis, financial disclosures show.

The judge donated $150 to Willis in June 2020, while working for the Justice Department.

“The donation itself is more or less a token amount and was made prior to his becoming a judge,” legal analyst Philip Holloway told the Daily Caller. “But failure to disclose to the defendants a political donation to the prosecutor can be seen as a present appearance of a conflict of interest. Judges are required to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest.”

Gov. Brian Kemp (R), who refused to launch a criminal probe into Willis, appointed McAfee to the bench and was subsequently sworn in on February 1, 2023.

Previously, McAfee worked for Willis in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office before she won the election in 2020, the New York Times reported in August.

BUT also seeing crazy dem registrations and after labor day expecting another spike in enthusiasm as people lock in. Georgia election board fuckery and kemp's attempts to have his cake and eat it too also very concerning, but polling is consistent there??

Today President Joe Biden pardoned more than 2000 former military personnel who had been convicted of engaging in consensual sex under a gay sex ban in the military that has since been repealed. People covered under the pardon can apply to have their military discharges corrected and to recover the pay and benefits the convictions cost them. “[M]aintaining the finest fighting force in the world…means making sure that every member of our military feels safe and respected,” Biden said in a statement. 

Biden said he was “righting an historic wrong.” “This is about dignity, decency, and ensuring the culture of our Armed Forces reflect the values that make us an exceptional nation,” he said.

On this date in 2015, the Supreme Court handed down the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, which said that states must license and recognize same-sex marriage because of the Fourteenth Amendment’s requirement that citizens must have the equal protection of the laws and cannot be deprived of rights without due process of the laws.  

In the New York Times today, Kate Zernike explained how the public conversations about abortion have shifted in the two years since the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that recognized the constitutional right to abortion. The state bans that went into place have illustrated that abortion is indeed healthcare, as people suffering miscarriages have been unable to obtain the imperative medical care they need. 

Zernike quoted pollster Tresa Undem, who estimated that before the 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision overturned Roe, less than 15% of Americans thought that abortion was relevant to them personally. Now, though, Undem said, “it’s about pregnancy, and everybody knows someone who had a baby or wants to have a baby or might get pregnant. It’s profoundly personal to a majority of the public.”

In the three weeks since Biden announced restrictions on asylum applications for undocumented immigrants, the number of people trying to cross the border has dropped more than 40% to its lowest level since he took office. This information will likely come up in tomorrow’s scheduled debate between the president and presumptive Republican nominee Trump, who has made it clear he intends to accuse the president of promoting immigration policies that bring criminals into the United States.

Former representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a military veteran who joined the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol and who has fiercely criticized Trump, today endorsed Biden for president. 

In a video, Kinzinger said: “[W]hile I certainly don’t agree with President Biden on everything, and I never thought I’d be endorsing a Democrat for president, I know that he will always protect the very thing that makes America the best country in the world: our democracy. Donald Trump poses a direct threat to every fundamental American value. He doesn’t care about our country. He doesn’t care about you. He only cares about himself. And he’ll hurt anyone or anything in pursuit of power.” 

On CNN tonight, Georgia governor Brian Kemp told Kaitlan Collins he did not vote for Trump in his state’s Republican primary, although he said he would “support the ticket” in November so that Georgia would remain in Republican hands. It was an interesting statement, since he could easily have deflected the question or simply said he voted for Trump if he cared about avoiding Trump’s wrath. But he appeared not to care, suggesting that Trump’s power even with prominent Republicans is slipping. 

Two Republican voters from Pennsylvania told MSNBC tonight that they are voting for Biden. When asked whether they think there is “a silent Biden voter out there,” one said, “I do. I know there is…. We don’t want to talk about it, but we’re all going to vote for Joe Biden.” 

By a 6–3 vote, the Supreme Court today blessed the practice of taking “gratuities” as a gift for past behavior by an official, distinguishing them from “bribes,” which require proof that there was an illegal deal in place. The case involved a former mayor from Indiana who helped a local truck dealership win $1.1 million in city contracts and then asked for and received $13,000 from the dealership’s owners. The mayor was found guilty of violating a federal anti-corruption law that prohibits state and local officials from taking gifts worth more than $5,000 from someone the official had helped to land lucrative government business.

For the majority, Justice Brett Kavanaugh suggested that the law prohibited officials from accepting “gift cards, lunches, plaques, books, framed photos or the like” in thanks for an official’s help, although David G. Savage of the Los Angeles Times noted that the law came into play only when the gift was worth more than $5,000. 

Savage pointed out that as the federal law in question covers about 20 million state and local officials, the decision could have wide impact. This decision that officials can accept “gifts” so long as they are not “bribes” might have something to do with the fact that Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have accepted significant gifts from donors—Thomas’s count is upward of $4 million—and it doesn’t relieve the sense that this Supreme Court, with its three right-wing Trump-appointed justices, is untrustworthy.

Writing for justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and herself, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said, “Officials who use their public positions for private gain threaten the integrity of our most important institutions.” 

Yesterday, House Republicans released draft legislation to fund the Justice Department and the Commerce Departments for fiscal year 2025, which starts October 1. They propose to slash nearly a billion dollars from the Department of Justice in retaliation for its bringing cases against Trump, and both to cut funding for the FBI and to block the construction of its new headquarters. Attorney General Merrick Garland called the cuts “unacceptable” and said that the “effort to defund the Justice Department and its essential law enforcement functions will make our fight against violent crime all the more difficult.”

In a secret vote yesterday  by a House panel that fell along party lines, House Republicans also agreed to say that the last Congress’s construction of the January 6th committee was invalid and illegal. This enabled them to back a last-ditch effort by Trump ally Steve Bannon to stay out of jail. After Bannon refused to respond to the committee’s subpoena for documents and testimony about the January 6 attack, a jury found him guilty of being in contempt of Congress. 

Today, Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) filed a brief with the Supreme Court saying that Bannon was right to ignore the subpoena because the committee was illegally organized. Politico’s Kyle Cheney pointed out that the lawyer for the brief is not a House lawyer but rather comes from America First Legal, a public interest organization put together by Trump loyalist Stephen Miller to challenge the legal efforts to rein in Trump’s orders when in office. 

Finally, Milwaukee journalist Dan Shafer reported in The Recombobulation Area today that event bookings expected for the week of the Republican National Convention, which is set to begin on July 15, four days after Judge Juan Merchan sentences Trump for his 34 criminal convictions, have not materialized. Estimates were that the convention would bring $200 million in economic impact to Milwaukee, but that now appears to be optimistic. “[This is] certainly nothing like we were told or promised,” chef Gregory León told Shafer. With locals staying home to avoid the downtown area during the convention, “[i]f the [reservation] book stays the way it is, we’re not going to make enough money to cover costs.”

Law enforcement officers in Georgia have arrested three top organizers behind a bail fund in Atlanta that has been aiding protesters against Cop City.

Atlanta police arrested the organizers, the CEO, chief financial officer and the secretary for the group behind the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, at their homes on Wednesday morning. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the three were charged with money laundering and charity fraud.

Activists called the arrests an escalation in the state’s attempt to crush the Stop Cop City movement, with participants being hit with increasingly harsh charges.

“This is a major escalation –– they’re arresting those who defend the arrested,” wrote Atlanta organizer Micah Herskind. “The implications of these arrests is that not only can you not protest, but you cannot defend those who are arrested for protesting. There is no first amendment in Atlanta.”

In a statement, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) spoke as though the organizers and other anti-Cop City activists were already found guilty of their charges from the GBI. He said that he was “proud” to have arrested the “criminals” who he says “facilitated and encouraged domestic terrorism,” referring to terrorism charges against Cop City protesters.

The city of Atlanta is pursuing a $90 million plan backed by both Republicans like Kemp and Democratic Mayor Andre Dickens to build an 85-acre police militarization compound in a forest in the area. If built, Cop City would be the nation’s largest police training compound, and activists say that it would only worsen brutality by local police, as evidenced by the violent response to nonviolent protesters — all while razing a forest to do so.

The Twitter account for the Defend the Atlanta Forest/Stop Cop City movement[] pointed out that the Atlanta Solidarity Fund has aided in lawsuits against the Atlanta Police Department over its arrests of a journalist and protesters in the movement. “This is retaliatory,” the group wrote.

Activists have also pointed out that the GBI’s statement about the arrest, as well as Kemp’s, seem to suggest that the state is preparing to use Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) charges against the bail fund, which the Atlanta Solidarity Fund has been predicting for months.

The organizers have said that the state appears to be creating a “flimsy narrative” that the group is a criminal organization. So far, over 40 activists have been charged with domestic terrorism for protesting the compound.

What's the deal with North Carolina and Georgia?

So we have our first weird quirk of this presidential election - North Carolina seemingly polling much less favorably for former President Trump than Georgia, even though he won NC and lost GA in 2020. Indeed, my polling average has Mr. Trump leading by over two points in the Peach State but only half a point in the Tar Heel State, so today I wanted to analyze the phenomenon more closely and come up with a few different factors that might be contributing to this.

First, let's go over the one that Republicans will want to talk about and Democrats fear, polling error. In 2020, President Biden led polls in North Carolina by a point more than he did in Georgia, yet lost the former by about 1.5% while winning the latter narrowly. Clearly, this is the same situation and a harbinger of a red wave, right?

Calm down there. First, yes, state-level polls produce outcomes like this from time to time, but it defies logic to assume that pollsters didn't attempt to correct for their genuinely disastrous misses in 2020. Second, there are more undecided voters in North Carolina, which could certainly cause the gap to close as we trudge towards November. Finally, even if we ignore those first two factors, the current polling gap between the two Southeast states is bigger than 2020's - so any polling error must not be the only factor.

This brings us to a possibility that liberals would prefer - the post-Dobbs coalition applying to its first presidential election. For those who haven't seen me use this term before, this describes the depolarization of party coalitions along racial lines in favor of increased polarization along religiosity lines - a phenomenon we started to see in 2020 but really took hold and accelerated in 2022. If it accelerates this year, it would be a boon for Democrats along the Rust Belt and in more secular Sun Belt states like Arizona and Nevada. Certainly, there's some compelling evidence that these demographic shits might be a factor or even the primary driver of the disparity - for one thing, at the state government level, North Carolina actually voted to the left of Georgia on average last cycle! Part of this is the across-the-aisle appeal that Governor Kemp and Secretary Raffensperger have proven to have, but it was still somewhat of a surprise to see that outcome in practice during the midterms. Georgia also had 6% more black voters compared to North Carolina (relative to overall turnout), so the racial depolarization aspect of this equation makes sense here, and we're seeing the strong polling along the Blue Wall for Vice President Harris that would match our hypothesis.

That said, I have a couple of problems with this theory. First, North Carolina actually has more evangelicals in its voter pool than Georgia, so religious polarization should be a problem for Tar Heel Democrats. Second, we're not seeing big polling surprises in Florida, which is more secular but is still a Southeast state, is extremely racially diverse, and just came off an R+20 election in 2022.

Finally, let's look at the boring option, a different pool of pollsters in Georgia vs. North Carolina. It's August, so we aren't going to see a glut of data yet (which is reflected in my model). So let's just do an apples-to-apples comparison of polls from both states around the same time and by the same pollsters, based on which had more favorable margins for Ms. Harris:

GA +2 (Morning Consult, late July)

GA +1 (Redfield & Wilton, late July)

NC +1 (BSG/GS Strategy Group, late July)

NC +6 (NYT/Siena Group, mid-August)

GA +2 (Redfield & Wilton, mid-August)

That's a much slimmer difference in North Carolina's favor on average, and really driven by one massive outlier poll (by the New York Times, but still!) It looks very likely that we're dealing with selection bias at the moment.

So in conclusion, the North Carolina rating being to the left of Georgia is probably a nothingburger driven by small sample sizes, but watch to see more signs of the post-Dobbs coalition going forward - it could make the 2024 map look weird.

Roger Stone, the longtime Trump confidant and adviser, recently said that Georgia Gov. “Brian Kemp is going to prison” and “The federal penitentiary is [the] only place he's going.” Stone’s remarks come in the midst of Donald Trump and his right-wing media allies promising political retribution against the former president’s political enemies, including the Republican governor.  [...]

Stone is a longtime adviser of Trump’s and has said he's known the former president for more than 40 years. Axios and CNN reported in March that Stone is a regular presence at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. He has also hosted Trump officials like Alina Habba and Jason Miller on his radio show.  Trump has also repeatedly attacked Kemp this month, calling him “a bad guy” and “disloyal.”  Around the time that Trump reignited his attacks on Kemp, Stone signaled something even darker: The Trump confidant indicated that the governor will end up in prison.  Stone wrote on August 4 on social media: “Trump won Georgia and it was stolen and Brian Kemp is going to prison. The lowest form of life known to man. A true piece of shit.” He also wrote: “Stacy Abrams beat Kemp's ass. and he knows it. The federal penitentiary is only place he's going.” 

Longtime Trump toady Roger Stone hinted that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) will be headed to jail.

See, that's where we disagree. I think the idea of the Romney-Democrat voter is a stone cold lie; some R voters may virtue signal about abandoning Trump, but is it really believable they actually did it? Trump got more popular votes than Romney ever did.

Romney-Democrats didn’t generally vote for Trump! They’re like, wealthy college-educated types who think Trump is crass and either blanked 2016 or voted for Hillary (and then Biden). These are like, NoVa Biden-Youngkin voters, you know? They may vote Republican downballot but generally they’re not anti-choice or anti-LGBT on a legislative level, they’re just rich and judgmental lol. Basically, these are the people who think Mitt Romney’s 47% comment and Hillary Clinton’s deplorables comment are both correct lmao.

A lot of people in Arizona in particular are also McCain republicans who ended up voting for Biden in 2020 because Cindy McCain endorsed him and ended up voting for Mark Kelly and Katie Hobbs not least since Kari Lake said that McCain Republicans should fuck off. John McCain’s sons are out there doing fundraisers for AZ Dems like these people aren’t Trumpists at all.

My point is that it remains to be seen what all these people do if and when the Republican Party becomes the party of Glenn Youngkin and Brian Kemp like will ancestral Republicans stay loyal Democrats or will they revert to the GOP?
