Sometimes I do spend quite a long time "perfecting" my first draft, maybe too long. But to be fair it at least means when I do my second draft it does make it easier for me so I think it is worth spending the time to make it as good as possible the first time through.
One short story of mine that I have recently finished and want to publish soon I noticed I made a couple of small mistakes. Whether it be simply spelling or forgetting a speech mark, it's good to fix these things before your work is open to the public.
I'll speak about it more soon but it's a story very much influenced by Greek/Roman mythology but set within my own fantasy world.

If people are sad about The Wizard Facism game coming from someone you used to look up to and admire, may I suggest an author whose books are filled with nuanced characters and strong, dynamic women?
Tamora Pierce has been writing since the 80’s and has two worlds of magic and fantasy and bonus!!! Isn’t a transphobic POS.

Breaking 3 Writing 'Rules':
If you have ADHD or ASC or are some other flavor of neurodivergent, the 'rules' many big name authors post about how they've reached success can actually make you feel REALLY BAD because you can't always do the same thing.
Building a positive relationship with writing can make all the difference in getting you writing more.
'Write every day.' - Don't write every day, write when the mood strikes. But you can trick your brain into work mode by trying different things. Put on your shoes when it's time to write. Light a candle. Put on the same playlist every time. After a while, it'll be like a light-switch. When you light the candle, your brain will find writing easier. Just don't force it. When you try to force writing, you build up frustration and resentment if you don't get anything out. Some days just won't be writing days. That's FINE, lots of authors don't write every day (even if they say they do).
'I write 1000 words every day!' - Well, if you WANT to write and are struggling, a goal of 1000 words seems really far away. So do incremental goals. One sentence. One paragraph. 100 words. Usually by then you're in the flow of things and you can write 1000 words pretty easy. And again, celebrate every single one of those goals so you want to keep doing it. If you have to? One sentence, walk away, come back later, add another, GOOD JOB, two whole sentences!
'Sit down and block out x hours every day just for writing.' - Actually, the best way I've found to write is to tell my brain the deadline or end time is really, really soon - so I write in 20-30 minute chunks, and then walk away or take breaks and come back if I want to later. By setting that arbitrary shorter deadline, my brain can see an end and will work harder and focus more because it knows it's just for a little bit. If 20-30 minutes is too long, start with 15 minute chunks.

i love writing desperate, enraged knights. those who scream at the sky, covered in dirt and gore and spit, a bloodied sword grasped in one sweaty hand, an item in remembrance of kinder days or the flesh of a friend/lover in the other.

Writeblr Intro
Well, guess there's a first time for everything. Had no idea folks did this until recently.
Hi ^-^ My name is Sy, I'm 29 years old, queer and a cis-female. I've been writing fictions on and off since my late teens, and I just recently began writing with serious intent. English is my second language, so I apologize if I mess up the spelling or grammar on something. I'm currently in school for computer programming and living with my grandparents, whom I take care of as well. I hope to meet some kind mutuals and share ideas with them ^-^
My hobbies are simple, mostly just video games, reading, writing, annoying my cat, and just vibing. I'm a homebody now, so I don't get into too many crazy shenanigans anymore (if my liver could talk, it'd have stories for days).
I like to write in high fantasy settings, but I tend to experiment with modern AUs from time to time. I have dabbled in Star Wars universe fictions, thanks to a gaming club I've been a part of for nearly three years.
Current WIPs
Ravens of Fate
Star Wars in-universe story of espionage, sabotage, and questioned loyalties. Post Episode VI Imperial POV.
Unnamed WIP
My serious attempt at writing my own story. High-fantasy military team charged with the protection of their sovereign's only daughter. An adventure with lots of action, some angst, and plenty of queer shenanigans. Doesn't have a title yet, but working on it!
If you're also a fellow writer, please interact with this post! I'd love to follow more writeblr blogs and meet new folks.
Well, that's all I got for now. My inbox is always open, so feel free to drop in there. Hope to meet some of y'all soon ^-^

Just My butch husband and his familiar being nosy neighbors
We’re working on the final edits and some promo material for my partners debut novel, The Heretic Prince!
If you want to read queer fantasy written by a queer author, please check out @thehereticprinceseries , my beautiful butch has written a captivating high fantasy following the interwoven fates of three queer main characters, with an incredible journey of transmasculine chivalry, a pining sapphic romance, and a gay coming of age against a backdrop of magic, espionage, and a budding conspiracy to undermine the false-prophets of an oppressive theocracy

Hello!
I am a new author who is working on my first book. I dont have alot of friends irl so id like to share and get feedback on my work.
Some stuff you should know about my story :p
♡ High fantasy with heavy romance elements.
♡ Multiple perspectives including those of an antagonist.
♡ a fully (i hope) fleshed out magic system
♡ A trans girl protagonist (because i've been able to find exactly 0 fantasy adventure books with a trans-fem as the love interest let alone the protagonist)
♡ Animal sidekick
♡ Smut 0_o
Basic Synopsis:
In a realm divided between those with magic and those without, a long-held grudge ignites. Seeking retribution for past wrongs, a powerful figure leads a magi uprising against non-magi society. Amidst the clash, loyalties are tested, alliances form, and a looming battle threatens to shatter the kingdom's fragile peace.
Ive always dreamed of being an author. I really enjoy fantasy books but most lack proper trans rep. I hope i can be the of the people.

Listen, I grew up loving a certain book too. But especially in this day and age, you have to put your money where your mouth is.
Tumblr media
I haven't read the *other* book, but when you live overseas and feel like you can't do much to help the oppressed, the least you can do is be smart about who you're giving supporting, whether it be authors or artists, companies or celebrities.
Just sayin'.

I'm definitely guilty of this. Sometimes I'll literally have the document open and I'll still sit here just thinking about future chapters or even some small stories that I want to write. Though I do believe it is always good to put a lot of thought into what you do end up writing anyway, at least that's the excuse I use.
Recently I've been writing about a new underground city in my world and in short it has led me to a lot more thinking than it has actual writing. I've researched so much about volcanoes, magma and anything related to it. It's definitely fun and nice to learn all this stuff that I probably never would have found out otherwise.
It's also important to me that although it's fantasy, I still want it to make some sense.

I'm finally making the leap and announcing it-- Ghosts of the Steel Road will be arriving on September 26th of this year!
This novel has been a long-time coming, and while there's still some work to do, I am so excited to be able to say I'm a self-published by the end of this year.
More to come on my website in the next few months, but feel free to ask any questions about it as time goes on!

5 Ways to Improve Character:
Personal advice on how to improve writing characters and giving them depth!
Add a gesture or the lack of one. Have a character that doesn't move when others might. Have a character that fidgets. Have a character that always coils hair around their fingers. Have a character that always nibbles their nails when they're thinking or bites their lips. Give them a gesture - YOU make them, so can they.
Know where they're going. I firmly believe you start a character at the end. If you want a character to end up a confident leader, have them start out with no confidence and always following. If you want a character to end up in love, have them start without it. If you want a character to end up with friends, have them start without any. Always start designing a character by what you want for them in the end, and doing the opposite.
Give them speech patterns. We have speech patterns, distinctive ones. So can characters. Internal thoughts, out loud, in first person - your character has a way of thinking, and a way of putting those thoughts out there. Have a character that never says more words than they need to. Have a character that thinks and thinks until they blurt things out and it never comes out quite right and then they have to explain it. Have a character that almost always just asks questions. Subtle but distinctive patterns of speech and thought can create stronger characters.
Clothing matters. What do they wear? Why? What personal objects do they carry with them? What is in their pockets, precious? Not just that, but colors, how they wear things, what they choose not to wear. How do they tie up their hair? What kind of shoes do they like? Do they wear a jacket, a cloak, a sweater? Are they one of those people who wears shorts in the snow?
Know how they grew up. Your characters were raised to believe certain things, raised a certain way. How did their upbringing affect how they present themselves? Toxic masculinity? Feminism? Soft and sensitive? Communicative? One of those people that always asks for what they want, or one of the people who tries to lead others around to what they want indirectly? Even just giving them the barest bones of an upbringing can help you form a character. Loving family, friends, no family, no friends, moving a lot, always living in one place - every aspect of those adds to a character's insecurities. If you have a character that always lived in the same place who then goes on an adventure, they will miss home. If you have a character that has always moved around who now has to stay still, they'll face entirely new challenges in maintaining social relationships.
Just one or two minutes of thinking about these things can give your characters some major depth.
