Iwaoi - Too Late (Hanahaki)
The Gist: Oikawa could have anyone that he wanted... except for one.
wc: 2k
warnings: ANGST.
(The timeline for this fic is non-linear, sorry in advance for the whiplash!)
---
They used to hold hands.
He used to know the feel of Iwaizumi's hand- calloused, warm, big- as well as his own. He isn't sure, but he thinks it was around the beginning of middle school that Iwaizumi stopped reaching for his hand on the walk to and from school, or during lunch, or at night while they star gazed.
Now, Iwaizumi held girls' hands. He was into the small, delicate type of girl. The twig like ones with slender little limbs and long hair, and a small, perky bust. Tall, lean, muscled, strong and male Oikawa Tooru did not fit into that box.
---
It was in seventh grade, during health class, that Oikawa first learned of the Hanahaki disease. He sat in the desk beside Iwaizumi's, listening with a cocked head as the teacher pointed to the text projected on the board.
"Moving on to a disease that, today, is almost entirely eradicated... we have the Hanahaki disease. While it used to be more common, today it's only seen in the rarest of cases. How might one have a chance of catching it? Unrequited love. That is to say, loving someone who doesn't love you back. There is no medicinal cure; the only way to survive Hanahaki is to have surgery. Since the disease progress in stages, the sooner you catch it, the better your chances are of a full recovery."
Oikawa raised his hand.
"Sensei, what if you can get the person to fall in love with you?"
---
"Iwa-chan!"
The set sailed elegantly through the air to meet the ace's palm, before smacking through the two person block and onto the opposing side of the court. The nameless opponents from Raion Academy cursed as another point in the practice game went to Seijoh.
And... Seijoh was at match point.
Oikawa gave Iwaizumi a victorious smirk.
Iwaizumi responded by shaking his head, "Oi, they're about to serve. Pay attention, Shittykawa!"
The match ended with Seijoh's victory, of course. As the other school packed up to leave, Oikawa wiped at his minimal sweat with a towel. Chocolate eyes moved across the gym, before landing on his ace, who was still working through some cool-down stretches.
His Iwa-chan. Except, no. That wasn't really right. Iwaizumi was indeed not his, regardless of how much Oikawa wished him to be. An itch started in his throat, and he coughed. And, despite being halfway across the gym, Iwaizumi's head whipped around, green eyes drilling into the setter.
"Hey, you better wear your hat home, dumbass! The last thing we need is our captain getting sick."
Oikawa struck a pose, "my, is Iwa-chan worried about me? I'm so flattered!"
"Shut up!"
The cough returned on their walk home, and Oikawa wondered if he'd caught a cold.
---
"What do you mean, 'something went wrong'?! Is my boy gonna be okay? Is- is anything else impaired?" Oikawa Namiko tossed a gaze to the closed room door behind her, where Iwaizumi leaned against, gaze lost.
The doctor remained stone faced, brushing a dark strand of hair out of her eyes and gripping her clipboard a little tighter. "I'm sorry Oikawa-san, we had not anticipated this either. The only consequence of the surgery should have been losing only his feelings for that boy. Not... anyways. This must have been a complication due to how late Oikawa came to us. He had already progressed so far through the stages..."
---
They lay side by side, enjoying the tranquil summer night. The stars twinkled above them, as Oikawa pointed out an array of constellations. And then, they basked in a comfortable silence. Oikawa turned his head. Iwaizumi was still staring up at the clear night sky, defined jaw pointed up.
The moon's light cast a cool spotlight over his warm skin, and Oikawa's lips parted. Beautiful. He was beautiful, in every sense of the word. Then, Oikawa's eyes lowered. Their hands were a mere few inches apart on the grass. He could shift his closer, brush his fingers over Iwaizumi's. He could. But he wouldn't.
Because that would cross the boundary of their friendship into... a different kind of territory. One Oikawa wasn't ready to face. Not now. Not today.
Maybe, not ever.
But, it was okay to wonder. To imagine, what it would be like if Iwaizumi was his. If he could hold Iwaizumi, kiss Iwaizumi, show him his heart so that he could understand how deep his feelings ran.
Iwa-chan, he would whisper, I love you.
---
The waiting room of the clinic was quiet. An old lady sat across from him, her arm in a sling. A young boy and his mother sat a few chairs away, the little boy cradling a garbage bin to his chest. Ah, he really didn't like hospitals.
Oikawa lowered his gaze and twiddled his thumbs. I'm gonna do this. I'm going to get the surgery. Then Iwa-chan and I can go back to being just friends, like we're supposed to be. Before I screwed everything up.
"Oikawa Tooru," a voice called. He looked up, like a deer caught in headlights, at the nurse dressed in pink garb.
"I-I-"
"Sensei, what if you can get the person to fall in love with you?"
She smiled, albeit bitterly, "well, then you'd be a miracle worker, Oikawa. See, out of all those inflicted with the disease, 95% are cured only through the surgery. This is because love is a fickle thing, you can't force it. Only 5% have been able to make their person return their feelings. It's all about luck."
Luck, huh. Oikawa Tooru hated luck. It was a lot like talent. Something you had, or something you didn't, and if you didn't- oh well. No, he liked to rely on hard work and determination. In volleyball, he sought to prove that he could make it without being a genius.
So what if he hadn't been lucky enough to be born a genius? He'd make it.
So what if he'd been unlucky enough to contract Hanahaki? He'd beat it.
He hated luck. So screw it. Screw luck. He'd fight through this new obstacle like he did every other. With sheer will power, and some hard work.
"I'm sorry!" He blurted, before bolting, the clinic doors swinging shut behind him.
No more running away. He couldn't give up. Because, his feelings for Iwaizumi were too precious to forfeit.
---
Oikawa awoke with a hacking cough, and, slapping a hand to his mouth, he hastily rolled over onto his side. A few disgustingly wet coughs later, and something soft kissed his palm. His tongue tasted... sweet.
He pulled his hand away, and there sat a small, yellow petal.
He stared at the thing covered in his saliva, a pensive frown on his face. What was the meaning of this? Had someone snuck a flower into his salad yesterday without his knowledge? It did sound like something those hooligans Hanamaki and Matsukawa would do. Because, come on, there had to be a reason he just hacked up part of a flower petal, right?
Perhaps he could have brushed it off as an odd one-off, if only it didn't happen again. And again. And again. Every time, the same, yellow petals. He spent more and more time bent over sinks and toilets, choking for air until the damn things came up. He thought back to seventh grade health class.
Hanahaki.
----
He didn't know what the fuck his plan was, or what the hell he was doing. All he knew, was that he needed to do something, because screw giving up and letting the Hanahaki win. Why should he have to forfeit his precious feelings? They seemed to make up so much of his heart these days... he wondered what would even be left once they were extracted.
Oikawa raced out from the train station and bolted through the streets. As he rounded the bend onto Iwaizumi's street, he froze. Laughter echoed throughout the still night air, before Iwaizumi swallowed it up with a firm kiss to his girlfriend's cheek.
A little part of his heart wilted.
The girl waved him off before heading down the opposite side of the street. It was then that Iwaizumi spotted him.
"Oikawa? Where've you been? We went over to your house earlier to see if you wanted to tag along to the movies, but you weren't home." Iwaizumi's face was still flushed, from the cold or from his recent activities with his girlfriend, no one would ever know.
"I was out shopping, but I didn't find what I wanted." Oikawa shrugged and waved the topic away, "wanna catch up on some homework?"
"Sure."
They sat in Iwaizumi's room, working through a set of math problems together. Eventually, Oikawa broke the silence.
"Did you hear about Ichinose-san, Iwa-chan?"
Iwaizumi lifted his head, and nodded. "That she had Hanahaki? Yeah. I think it's silly, that she left it so long she almost didn't make it. I mean, really, are there any feelings worth your life?"
Yes, Oikawa wanted to say, there are. Instead, he hummed, "ah, so Iwa-chan thinks she should have gotten the surgery right away, instead of waiting?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I do."
There's still hope. Don't give up. A tiny voice. A tiny glimmer of light through the billowing darkness. You're gonna beat this. Oikawa's hands clenched at the material of his shorts. It was now or never, there wouldn't ever be a perfect time, not in this world. He had to confess. You're gonna be that 5%, you're going to beat this.
And then another voice rose to combat, like you've "beaten" Shiratorizawa?
And once more, he was plummeted into darkness.
He knew what must be done.
---
Yellow Freesia.
That was the name of the flower he'd contracted, the flower that was literally growing inside of him, determined to suffocate him from the inside out. After doing some googling, Oikawa discovered that the flower originated from Africa, and that they were zygomorphic, and named after some German botanist. The most hilarious part?
They represented friendship. Fucking friendship. Oh, the irony.
It seemed that even the flower itself was mocking him. As if trying to kill him wasn't enough.
---
Oikawa Tooru awoke with a nurse hovering over him, breathing hot air onto his forehead as she gasped, "he's awake! Grab me a phone." She turned back to him, smiling and showing off a lipstick stain on her tooth, "welcome back, dear. Would you like to contact someone? A parent? A friend?"
Slowly, as he blinked dazedly around the tiny, white room, Oikawa's memories returned to him. Ah, right. I came here to get a surgery, without my parents' knowledge. It was for Hanahaki, but I can't seem to recall...
"Ah, yes. Thank you." He politely took the wireless phone and dialed his mother.
She arrived shortly after, his sister and Takeru in tow. Oikawa Namiko burst into the room, wrapping her son up in her arms. He... couldn't remember the last time he'd hugged his mother. Being wrapped up in her strong embrace brought a rush of feelings through him, and the tears came before he could stop them.
"Oh, Tooru, why didn't you tell me?" Namiko whispered into his hair, holding him tighter. "My dear boy... how much you must have been hurting..."
When she finally released him, his sister was next, giving him a more chaste hug while Takeru plopped down on the edge of his bed.
"Are you okay, Uncle Tooru?"
Was he? Physically, he was tired, but okay. The surgery had went well, especially considering how much the Hanahaki had progressed in his body. But still... he had a lingering feeling that something was off. He couldn't exactly place it, but it remained like an annoying itch.
Just then, a boy his age with spiky hair came running into the room, muddy shoes leaving a trail in his wake. He was wet- he must have got caught in the rain, without his coat. Green eyes rapidly searched the room before landing on him, and the boy stomped forward.
"Shittykawa, I'm gonna kill you once you're better. You... how could you not tell me? About it, about who it was for... I would have done something. I would have helped you confess, or been there for you if you still wanted the surgery. You don't- you don't always have to do this kind of shit alone. That's what I'm here for." After his long winded speech, the boy stepped forward and wrapped him in the tightest hug yet.
Oikawa faltered.
"I'm sorry, but... who are you?"

VASYL STUS, REGRESARAS A UNHA TERRA LIBRE
“We must keep vital in ourselves a sense of scandal so overwhelming that it affects every significant  aspect of our position in history and society. We have, as Emily Dickinson would have said, to keep the soul terribly surprised. I cannot stress this enough.”
(George Steiner, In Bluebeard’s Castle – Some notes towards the re-definition of culture)

(O poeta Vasyl Stus lendo)
Cando me quitan a vida, non necesito migallas lamentables.

No entanto, Stus tenta conciliar esa resistencia interior co mundo, coa natureza do mundo.

A escuridade. O abismo. O borde.

(Dmytro Stus, fillo do poeta)

KOKIA YouTube livestream [2020.05.16]
KOKIA has wrapped up yet another livestream, with today’s 1 to 1 Live for you stream called ‘animal musical’. And an animal themed show it was indeed! Running longer than the average stream, KOKIA went through a lot of her animal songs from her tontonton project and even introduced some new tracks. In case you missed it, I have included a tracklist and a report below with a couple of more screenshots.
Tracklist:
1. Animal musical introduction (Owl) 2.  Fukurou ~Fukurou ga shiraseru kyaku ga kita to~ (‘Owl ~a guest has arrived, the owl reports~’) 3. Miiakyatto (‘Meerkat’) 4.  Kirin ~nagai kubi shita kirin-san~ (‘Giraffe ~the long-necked giraffe~’) 5.  Raion ~Yowamushi raion be my friend~ ('Lion ~cowardly lion~’) 6.  Tanuki ~matsuri no yoru~ ('Raccoon dog ~festival night~’) 7.  Pinku no zou (’pink elephant’) 8.  Roba ~sonna ni ooku wa shiranai kedo~ ('Donkey ~I don’t know about that much’) 9.  Hito (‘human’) 10. Kujira ~mama no daiji-san irasshai~ ('Whale ~here is mama’s treasure~’) 11. Animal musical curtain call (chicken)
Pianist: Souta Seta
Tumblr media
After sound checking, KOKIA disappears off-screen for a bit to ‘transform’: upon return, she is wearing an owl hoodie and launches into an introduction song to welcome us to today’s performance. Of course, the first song proper is Fukorou, ‘owl’.
Tumblr media
After shedding the hoodie, KOKIA returns to introduce a new song: Meerkat, fitting the animal theme and today’s theme as well, with the lyrics going ‘Stay home’. Other savanna animals follow with the giraffe (she still has the finger puppet) and the lion, who seems scary but just wants to be friends. She has a hoodie for him, too!
Tumblr media
Another transformation later, KOKIA reappears in a light kimono to introduce the next song: Tanuki, about the raccoon dog. They’re real animals, but also a popular creature in Japanese folklore in which it often fights with the fox, or kitsune, and the song is about a sumo fight between the two of them in a shrine garden. KOKIA is an enthusiastic referee and pianist Seta seems to join the cheers in the chorus!
Tumblr media
After a slight technical hitch, KOKIA returns with a song about an elephant: Pinku no zou, ‘pink elephant’, which doesn’t actually feature on the tontonton albums, even though the second album has an elephant song… (This particular arrangement of Pinku no zou can also be heard on the ALIVE album by the way, as it’s pretty different from the first album version.)
Now that she’s back in her normal clothes, we can see the t-shirt she’s wearing underneath, and she indeed shows of her 1 to 1 Live for you shirt in different colors. You can get one yourself to show your support at the official webshop!
Tumblr media
Next up is a beautiful and all new song which is technically still animal themed: Hito, meaning ‘human’. Followed by a touching rendition of the song Kujira, ‘Whale’, KOKIA then ends the livestream with a ‘Please, stay home and stay safe! I love you, everyone.’
Just kidding - the piano picks up in a much quicker tempo now, and KOKIA hops back into screen having transformed one more time as she gives her chicken themed encore!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that final bow, the stream ends for real. Hope you had fun along with KOKIA!

Lgbt manga pt. 2
My last lgbt manga post mostly consisted of gender representation, so with this post I’ll try to incorporate more gay/lesbian/same sex representation! Just for clarification I have read all of them!!
For obvious mangas that I have not recommended on this list, itll stay like that. Either because they are already well known and popular, or its because despite being popular, it has some very problematic themes that arent portrayed in a negative spotlight, ultimately idolizing the problems (cough cough) or are the ‘kill your gays’ trope and have tragic endings which defeats the purpose of this list.
Tumblr media
1. My Son is Probably Gay by Okura
This is such a sweet manga. The story follows a mom who slowly sees that her son might be gay because he’s very upfront with his feelings and isn’t very good at lying. However instead of assuming and forcing him to come out, she lets him be and quietly supports him from behind the scenes. His brother also seems to have taken the hint as well and is showing support in his own way. I guess this is what the “I’m proud that you had the courage to tell me, and I’ve already had a hunch anyways” parents see before we come out to them.
Tumblr media
2. Dasadanan by Herb Mandu
The reason why I’ve been refraining from posting about same sex couples is because some of them are put in the genres where they sexualize lgbt couples. However I can safely guarantee you that Dasadanan is very lgbt friendly! Seyeon receives a confession from his childhood friend Kang Chan and he doesn’t know how to respond. Seyeon’s other friend whos a girl gets into a fight with Kang Chan cause she also loves Seyeon. However the girl gets into a lesbian relationship at the end, and there are some other gay couples in it too!! It is very fluffy and lovey dovey, and there isnt a lot of angst stuff in it so if you want to read something comfy this one is your go to!!
Tumblr media
3.  Raion Gotoki no Kuni kara by Hakase
Although it is labelled as yaoi, it is actually surprisingly wholesome??? Makoto’s family is registered as a host family and an exchange student moves into their family!! However the exchange student is a masaai warrior (or in better terms from a masaai tribe). Overnight Makoto researches on the subject to learn more about the student they will be housing and tries to come up with a greeting in their native language  to welcome them. The exchange student Nairobi shows up at his house, completely fluent in english (or japanese depending on if we’re talking about the original manga) but when he finds out that Makoto wrote down a greeting in his language it warms his heart. The art depicting the masai people are actually very nice!!! Nairobi even has dreads. Even though there is only one chapter out right now, I can’t wait for more!!
Tumblr media
4. Hero-san and Former General-san by Sometime
There are an alien race disguised amongst humans named Antinoids! Honey Trap, an antinoid, fights the human hero in a mecha bunny suit named Rapid Rabbit. When the mask comes off, it turns out Rapid Rabbit is a girl! Honey Trap quickly falls for her, and is therefor unable to kill her. Confronted with this by her boss, she is fired. Honey Trap suddenly jobless and homeless, runs into Rapid Rabbit and starts living with her. She then starts teaming up with her to fight against her old business! It is very sweet and humorous, I loved it since I first read it.
Tumblr media
5. Gay Fuuzoku no Mochigi-san: Sexuality wa Jinsei da. by Mochigi
An autobiography of Mochigi, a gay former-sex worker who lives out in the countryside! This autobiography describes the sex industry in japan also. If you’d like to support and follow the author, here is his twitter, and here is his amazon to buy his works!
Tumblr media
6. Boys Run the Riot by Gaku Keito
The protagonist, Ryou is a trans guy. He suffers from dysphoria and tries his best to go past the school’s rules to wear anything but a girls uniform. He even binds his chest (with ace bandages, even though thats unsafe and potentially hazardous). He has a crush on his friend, Chika. In his second year of highschool, a new student arrives by the name of Satou Jin. Although everyone is terrified of him because of his looks (looks like a gangster) and his mannerisms, he’s actually a bright and cool guy. When trying to start a brand together, Jin’s old friends point out Ryou and ask if he’s a girl. In an arguement, Jin convinces Ryou to tell him his true feelings, and so he comes out tohim. Jin instantly accepts him for who he is. Although there are only two chapters translated into english atm, there are about 20+ raw chapters untranslated (fairly recent too, at the time of posting the last chapter was released 22 hours ago). I hope that a scanlation team picks this manga up to translate the rest because I absolutely love it!!
Tumblr media
7. Half & Half by Nanami Mao
Hina reminisces about her first love named Itsuki, even though she has a boyfriend. One night, she has a dream about him. The next morning a tall, beautiful girl shows up at her doorstep, its actually Itsuki! She herself is a trans woman, and is now living how she wants to live. Hina slowly falls back in love with her first love, even if she is a girl now. She also defends Itsuki and becomes an ally for her, and even supports her. This shit is cute and I love it
Tumblr media
8.  Kyou Kara Yonshimai by Satou Nanki
Three sisters suddenly receive an email from their supposed brother, Kashiwa who left for college 2 years ago and is suddenly coming back home to live with them! When Kashiwa arrives however, he had actually transitioned to a woman! The three try to get adjusted to the new change, and live with a fourth sister. This is labelled as romance because of the main protagonist, Sakura, having a love subplot. Kashiwa also has a girlfriend as well.
Tumblr media
9. 19 Days by Old Xian
If this artstyle looks familiar, you’d be right! Old Xian has a manhua that is a collab with Tan Jiu, the one who wrote Tamen de Gushi, a very popular manhua about two girls in a relationship and their misadventures. 19 Days is exactly like it, about two childhood friends (who fall in love) and their misadventures. It slowly evolves into a plot-driven story, which introduces two other characters.
Unfortunately, this is where my list ends because its very hard to find lgbt manga!! However I’ll continue searching for more! I’ll add them on when I find them!

---
¹ This cutesy pun fits better in Japanese, where wonderland is pronounced more like “wanda-land”.
² Penguins aren’t actually chatty, but PERAPERA is either cute wordplay or just a mnemonic to remember the term “emperor”.
³ This conversation relies heavily on a pun that more or less has to be forced in English. IKUMEN—>relatively new term that refers to dads that are super-involved in child raising, such as stay-at-home dads IKEMEN—>much more common word for a good-looking or stylish guy
⁴ Similar to chatty penguins, scattered (“barabara”) is a play on capybara. The power of unity most likely refers to the fact that their groups are highly social and can consist of up to 100 capybaras during the dry season.
