Costa is in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney with good friends Manu and Jude, lending a hand with a garden project for a neighbour. Their mission is to set a tea patch and wicking bed planters for a member of Manu’s Farm It Forward movement, Riri, who is vision impaired.
Riri explains that she lost her eyesight more than 30 years ago but she never had the courage or confidence to walk down her street on her own, as there are no footpaths. But when she heard that Farm It Forward had set up at the end of her street she took the plunge to walk down there. “I met Manu and that’s how it all started,” she says.
“When you can’t see, you tend to stay indoors a lot,” Riri says, “but this will get me out.”
To create two no-dig patches, Manu and Jude first lay down some cardboard across the whole area to help suppress weeds. The sticky tape and staples have to be removed first. Next, they build two long rows of compost and soil mix to form the raised no-dig beds, leaving a pathway in the middle between the beds that they then cover with mulch.
At the end, two wicking beds are made up and planted out.
When the work is complete, the team invites Riri out to help her explore her new gardens.

till morning comes, let's tessellate
Tumblr media
Pairing: Mark Webber x fem!reader Words: 1219 Warnings: flirting, dirty talk, bratty behaviour, cockwarming
In which you're willing to play with fire
---
It’s far too hot, is the only way you can describe the weather. Having grown up in Europe, it always messes with your brain a little whenever you and your husband spend the better part of January in his home country of Australia, where it’s very much summer instead of winter. Mark doesn’t mind; he will happily work out in the garden while you prefer to remain in the shade of the plum trees as you read a book in the hammock Mark had hung for you. Which is what you had been doing until watching your husband doing manual labour proved too much of a distraction. You can’t help but clench your thighs together as he walks back towards the house, wiping his brow with the shirt he had taken off already. There is no way you can continue reading now, not when Mark lifts one of the logs of a fallen tree up onto his shoulder to carry it into the shade. The threadbare fabric of the oversized t-shirt you found in the back of his closet rubs over your nipples and you can’t help but bite back the whimper that’s threatening to come out at the feeling. Fuck, you are so turned on already and all he’s done is carry wood. Mark looks up at you, giving you a knowing smirk.
“What’s a girl gotta do to get her husband to give her attention?” you pout, e-reader now forgotten in your lap.
“You always have my attention, sweetheart,” Mark responds, dropping another log next to the ones already there.
“Besides, you were reading,” he adds, an eyebrow raised. He has you there; the world could go up in flames without you even realising whenever you’re engrossed in a book. Whatever witty retort you might have come up with dies on your lips as he swings the axe and chops the fire wood for the pizza oven you had surprised him with for your anniversary. Your breath catches in your lungs and your clit throbs as you watch the muscles in his back move under his bronzed skin.
“I’m sure Fernando would’ve,” you say instead once you’ve found your tongue. Mark just hums, amused at your sudden brattiness.
“I wouldn’t bet on that, but sure darling,” he says, raising the axe again. Mark’s got a point, even if it pains you to admit that.
“Jenson definitely would,” you counter instead. At this point you might as well fully commit to riling him up.
“Sweetheart, you work with him and know just as well as I do, he would not give you the attention you need,” Mark replies. Damn this man, you think as you grow hot all over at the implication of his words. Jenson is just as much a tease as you can be, and while this makes for great TV as you wind each other up, you need a man who-.. Well, frankly you need a man who can put you in your place, sometimes literally. Just the memory of Mark throwing you onto the bed as if you weigh nothing has you clenching your thighs to alleviate the ache you feel.
“That’s what I thought,” he muses as he watches you. You huff, folding your arms over your chest which causes the shirt to bunch up a little higher up your thighs. Mark’s eyes catch the way it shows off your legs, lust quickly replacing the bemusement in his eyes. Oh, you’ve got this man right where you want him. Trying not to show just how smug you’re feeling, you place your e-reader on the little side table as you sit up on your knees –which, given the fact that you’re in a hammock, is easier said than done.
“Maybe I should give Sebby a call. If all you’re gonna do is talk, I might as well have a little fun,” you taunt, shrugging a shoulder as you give him your most innocent look. You know you’re playing a dangerous game, bringing up his last teammate. Mark and Sebastian were competitive to a fault, and while you never even considered giving in to Sebastian’s advances on you, you know the fact they vied for your attention always brings out this possessive streak in your husband.
Mark drops the axe and saunters over to you.
“Is that so, sweetheart? What exactly do you think Seb can give you? Hm? Bees?”
“Among other things,” you quip, anticipation swirling low in your belly as he towers over you. One hand comes to rest on your chin, lifting your face up so he can look you in the eyes. His thumb drags on your bottom lip, making your eyes flutter closed, and for a brief moment you think he will make you suck on it. Your eyes snap open as soon as you hear his chuckle.
“You always talk such a big game, but as soon as there’s even a possibility of me giving what you want, you fold so quickly. What happened to using your words, darling?”
“‘S more fun this way,” you mumble, and you feel your cheeks heat up in embarrassment.
“Getting punished for being a brat is your idea of fun?” Mark asks, eyebrow raised. You shrug once more.
“You know how much I love it when you spank me,” you say as plainly as you can while you need to fight the urge to squeeze your thighs shut. One of Mark’s hands drags up your thigh and under the t-shirt. Biting your lip, you look at him waiting for the moment he will realise this t-shirt is the only thing you’re wearing.
“You are incorrigible.” “Mm, that’s a big word for you, baby.”
“It’s not the only thing that’s big, sweetheart,” Mark says with a grin that has your heart beat stuttering. His hands move to your ass and you have just enough awareness to wrap your arms around his neck before he lifts you up. In hindsight, it’s quite impressive how he manages to get in the hammock with you.
“Wha- what are you doing?” you ask as he moves you into his lap, both your knees bracketing his hips.
“Oh sweetheart, wasn’t this your plan all along? So desperate for my cock that she forgot all her manners,” he coos, pulling his shorts down just far enough to free himself.
“Oh, fuck,” you whisper as he drags it along your slit, rubbing over your clit with each pass.
“Mm, thought so,” Mark muses, lifting you up slightly so he can align himself with your entrance. He slowly sinks you down onto him, and you can’t help but pant at the stretch when he bottoms out.
“Mmhmm, that’s right sweetheart. You just wanted to be full, didn’t you?”
“Uhu..” you whisper, unable to come up with any sort of comeback or sassy remark. Placing your hands on his pecs, you try to roll your hips to get some friction, but Mark halts your movements.
“Mark,” you whine, “please, need you..”
“Oh but you have me, sweetheart. Only good girls get fucked. Naughty girls will just have to make do with cockwarming.”
“So mean,” you pout, earning you a kiss.
“Make you a deal, read your book like the good little girl I know you can be, and maybe I’ll let you come.”

how they ask you out/how you ask them out - part two
Tumblr media
Valtteri Bottas:
You were immediately different from the get go. Compared to the many extroverted women that Valtteri had both dated and encountered throughout his career, you were an introvert. You knew how to be civil, how to talk to strangers but you much preferred more intimate situations where conversations can be a lot more personal and meaningful. Valtteri loved the way you would immediately turn to rambing away about random things when you were nervous, something he had encountered when he asked to buy you a drink the very first night he met you. It was absolutely refreshing to encounter someone like you, someone as genuine as you.
It was very slow at first; he followed you on Instagram, you asked for his number, he would ask how you were, you would ask how his training was. There was a lot of back and forth and it was clear the two of you were waiting for either person to make the first move. Tiffany was quite enjoying sitting on the sidelines as the two of you would privately message her with updates about the conversation or how to ask the other one out. It was honestly quite sickeningly cute really.
You felt your phone buzz as you were getting ready to finally leave your cafe after a long and very busy day. Summer holidays in Australia were absolute mayhem, especially being located at the beach, however there was nothing like the busy period that was the Winter holidays with families hoping to get the last bit of sun at the beach before they went back to their cold hometowns. You opened your phone, half expecting it to be a text from a coworker about a shift cancellation or something but instead your heart raced when you saw a certain man's name on your screen.
Valtteri: i’m on a break and decided to come to australia, how about i take you out for dinner?
Y/N: you know, australia is pretty big and i’m fairly certain you’re nowhere near my town
Valtteri: let me rephrase. i’m on a break and decided to come and surprise you now can i please take you out for dinner?
Tumblr media
Mick Schumacher:
It was almost as if Nigel knew when Mick had come home from a race weekend. The growing puppy would lay in his spot near the window and as soon as he spotted the headlights of Mick’s car he bounded out of the house and through the paddocks and gardens to greet Mick on his front step. You would apologise profusely when Nigel came running back with muddy paw prints, a belly full of treats and a tired but smiling Mick walking behind him, but Mick always insisted that it was okay, which it was. It was a non-tradition tradition he now loved, though as much as he loved Nigel, he wouldn’t mind coming home to someone like you.
He had developed a crush on you after a few months, grateful to have a neighbour like you. You would always offer dinner when Nigel led him back, and it was partially because you lived in a big house with lots of horses and Nigel and you desperately needed other forms of social interaction, but you too had also developed a crush on Mick. After your first meeting, you couldn’t help but look him up. You knew nothing about the sport when you first found out just how well known he was but you decided to watch some and soon found yourself cheering for him.
Half an hour after Nigel disappeared to greet your neighbour he came back, this time with a single rose through his collar and a note. You looked around outside and raised an eyebrow when you saw no Mick. You called Nigel inside, the puppy sitting with his tail wagging as he eagerly waited for you to pat his paws dry. You immediately went for the note, opening it to see some messy scribbling that was only just decipherable.
How about you come to mine for dinner?
Tumblr media
Kevin Magnussen:
The sex was absolutely insane. He was just as much into his own pleasure as he was into yours and he spent ample time trying to make you cum, watching you as you squirmed in the hotel bed. Kevin was obsessed with the way you sounded when he got you to your peak, the way you moaned out profanities or softly said his name. He loved making you feel this way, making you come undone and it was all because of him. God, if your brother found out what the two of you were doing it would honestly be a civil war in the Haas Racing Team.
It first started off as cheeky flirting with Nico trying to keep the two apart. Nico loved you immensely, he was the big protective older brother and he also loved Kevin and the way they rekindled their friendship and how he had become a true friend in such a short amount of time. Nico was supportive of you when you finally decided to go no contact with your parents and he supported Kevin when he went through his divorce with Louise so if he ever found out that the two of you were casually having sex, he would go off.
“You know,” Kevin began as he settled you into his arms, your body absolutely tired from the past couple of hours. You rested your head on his chest, listening to his heart rate as the two of you both cooled down. “We can get food sometimes, no expectations of sex.” You raised an eyebrow, looking up at him.
“Like, as friends or..” You trailed off. You wouldn’t say no, to engaging in something other than casual sex with him. Sure, he was a lot older than you and was your brother’s teammate but he was gorgeous and a gentleman. He was very respectful and the two of you were clearly compatible sexually.
“We can make it as a friendly date or a date date.”

Adeia 2023: Modern Festival to Demeter
On a global scale, we’re dealing with a climate crisis that is putting food sources at risk. On a more local level, conflicts and abnormal weather are creating risks of bad harvests, resources shortages and/or inflations. We are aware that not everyone is impacted directly by the current ongoing issues, but we hope that this festival (or at least the idea) can be useful beyond these and be seen through a wider scope of praying for food security at large.  We named the festival Adeia, from the ancient Greek ἄδεια, which conveniently can signify both “abundance”/”plenty” and “freedom from fear”/”security”. All things the festival aims for. - @thegrapeandthefig’s original post
With El Niño threatening, a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, and record warmest winter almost Australia-wide, the upcoming summer is looking to be dry, hot, and ripe for bushfires.
The gods I am propitiating for my Adeia are Demeter Soteira (saviour), Herakles Alexikakos (averter of evil), Zeus Hyetios (moist/fertilising rain), Hermes Nomios and Apollon Nomios (protectors of pastures and shepherds), Olea (nymph of my garden), and Djarlgarra (local river god).
My menu includes:
Butterflied pork sausages with garden flowers and parsley
Flower shaped oranges with cranberry centres and honey on a bed of barley
Bread on a bed of garden parsley
Rain water in a pitcher
Tumblr media
We call upon you in our time of need Benevolent gods, givers of good.
Crises threaten world-over and hardships befall many, and now again we raise our voices in plea.
If these smoky offerings please you, and these sweet drinks warm you, look well upon us. Kindly gods, bless our coffers and larders again, and see abundance flow to our house. And should strife visit our doors, grant us the fortitude to endure.
May Demeter’s lawful eye oversee policy development, so great changes can sprout in years to come
May Zeus meter his life-giving rains, so dry or soggy fields remain moist year-through
May Hermes keep a watchful eye on the flocks and farm-hands, that flystrike and heatstroke never hinder them
With outstretched arms I sing praises to you, bold Djarlgarra, he who holds moisture for our sun-stricken land
And to sweet Olea I gift equally sweet fruits, that you may keep my rain barrels at bursting and my garden fertile

Railway Sleepers for Sale: The Perfect Choice for Your Landscaping and Construction Needs
When it comes to landscaping, gardening, or outdoor construction projects, choosing the right materials is essential to achieving long-lasting results and enhancing the visual appeal of your space. One material that has stood the test of time is railway sleepers. Once used to support train tracks, these durable and versatile wooden beams have now found their place in homes and gardens across the world. If you're looking for quality Railway Sleepers For Sale, you've come to the right place.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Railway Sleepers?
Railway sleepers are highly sought after for their rugged, natural beauty and exceptional strength. Whether you're building retaining walls, raised garden beds, steps, or outdoor furniture, railway sleepers are a fantastic option. Their durability allows them to withstand the elements, making them a reliable and long-lasting choice for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Another advantage of using railway sleepers is their aesthetic versatility. Available in a variety of wood types, from hardwood to softwood, sleepers can add a rustic, organic feel to your garden, patio, or landscaping project. The natural grain, texture, and color of the wood make them a popular choice for anyone looking to create a timeless, earthy look in their outdoor spaces.
The Benefits of Using Reclaimed Railway Sleepers
One of the most popular options on the market is reclaimed railway sleepers. These sleepers have been salvaged from decommissioned railways, giving them a distinct, weathered look that adds character and charm to any project. Reclaimed sleepers are often more affordable than brand-new ones, making them an attractive option for those looking to undertake large-scale projects on a budget.
Aside from their affordability, reclaimed railway sleepers are also an eco-friendly option. By repurposing old sleepers, you contribute to recycling efforts, reducing the need for new timber and limiting deforestation. Plus, the aged appearance of reclaimed sleepers gives them a unique, rustic look that cannot be replicated by new wood.
Red Gum Sleepers: A Premium Choice for Durability and Strength
Among the various types of sleepers available, Red Gum Sleepers stand out as a premium option. Red gum wood is native to Australia and is known for its exceptional hardness, density, and resistance to decay. These characteristics make red gum sleepers ideal for structural applications such as retaining walls, garden edging, and outdoor furniture.
Tumblr media
Red gum sleepers are also highly resistant to termite attacks and other pests, ensuring that your projects will remain sturdy and reliable for years to come. Their natural resistance to weathering makes them perfect for outdoor use, where they can endure exposure to the elements without rotting or warping. If you're looking for sleepers that combine durability with a visually appealing deep reddish-brown hue, red gum sleepers are an excellent choice.
Railway Sleepers in Landscaping
One of the most popular uses for railway sleepers is in landscaping projects. Their versatility allows them to be used in various ways, including as garden borders, retaining walls, steps, and raised garden beds. Here are some creative ideas for using railway sleepers in your outdoor spaces:
Garden Beds: Raised garden beds made from sleepers offer a practical and aesthetically pleasing solution for growing plants, flowers, or even vegetables. They help to define garden spaces while keeping soil contained, making maintenance easier.
Pathways and Steps: Railway sleepers can be used to create rustic pathways or garden steps. Their natural texture adds charm to outdoor areas, providing a non-slip surface that blends seamlessly with the surrounding environment.
Retaining Walls: If your garden has sloping terrain, retaining walls made from railway sleepers can help prevent soil erosion and create level planting areas. Their strength and durability make them perfect for this type of structural work.
Garden Furniture: Create custom benches, tables, or planters using railway sleepers. Their sturdy nature and natural beauty make them perfect for crafting outdoor furniture that is both functional and decorative.

Creative Ways to Use Bricks Beyond Walls
Tumblr media
Image from Pexels
When you think of bricks, you often imagine sturdy walls and facades. However, this kind of material is actually versatile enough to be used beyond what is depicted as traditional applications. That said, brick suppliers in Australia are exploring creative ways to use bricks beyond the usual wall design. Well, we can’t deny the fact that the possibilities are endless for bricks, from transforming outdoor spaces to incorporating bricks into stylish indoor elements.
To help spark your creativity in using bricks beyond your walls, below are a few design ideas you can use for your home.
Ways to Incorporate Bricks to Your Home
There is no doubt that bricks are versatile materials that can be used more than for building walls. So, if you're looking for creative inspiration on how to incorporate them into your home, it’s time that you discover more of it today!
Decorative Applications
Brick Pavers and Pathways
It’s time to combine functionality with aesthetic appeal by using bricks on your driveway, walkway, or garden path. One good example is pavers. They are durable enough to withstand high-traffic areas, so you won't have to worry about them cracking or fading over time.
Since brick suppliers offer a variety of colours, sizes, and shapes, you have many options to choose from. With this, you can lay the bricks in various patterns to create a visually appealing driveway or outdoor space.
Tumblr media

Outdoor Fireplaces and Barbecues
If you often hold outdoor parties or gatherings, consider creating a custom brick fireplace or barbecue station as it is one of the creative ways to use bricks for your home. Since bricks can tolerate high temperatures and have excellent heat-retaining abilities, they're the perfect material for roasting smores, cooking pizzas, and more!
Furthermore, bricks are resistant to weathering. This allows them to maintain their structural integrity even in harsh climates. As a result, you can enjoy your fireplace for numerous parties over the years.
Garden Features
Bring your garden to life using bricks as built-in raised garden beds. An elevated bed makes it easier to manage soil quality and drainage, and it can even help improve the quality of your plants.
Raised planters also reduce the need to bend and kneel while gardening, making the overall gardening experience much easier. Fortunately, brick suppliers in Australia offer a range of colours and textures. If you like, you can stick to classic grey bricks to keep the focus on the beauty of your plants.
Interior Design Elements
Brick Accent Walls
Bringing exposed bricks into your interior can create an interesting accent wall that blends rustic charm with modern elegance. With the right colour and texture, bricks can add warmth to contrast the smoothness of painted surfaces.
Tumblr media
Image from Pexels
To maximise your accent wall's impact, consider placing it in a prominent location in your home, such as behind a main seating area, bed, or dining table. Since this is one of the creative ways to use bricks, it can draw the eye's attention and create a stunning visual element in your space.
Brick Backsplashes
Brick backsplashes are becoming a popular design choice for various homeowners. They provide a charming look to elevate your kitchen. Contrary to popular belief, brick backsplashes are relatively easy to clean. That is why brick manufacturers recommend you use mild soap and water to remove grease and grime.
In addition to that, you must learn to stay away from harsh chemicals or aggressive scrubbing, as these will damage the surface of the bricks. To prolong your backsplash's lifespan, periodically check for signs of wear or damage so you can fix them promptly.
Architectural Details
Incorporating bricks into architectural details, like archways or columns, can add character to your home. Depending on the type of brick you choose, you can create simple or ornate designs to liven up your space.
For example, if you want to create a subtle statement, go with white or tan bricks because they go well with most neutral colours. But if you want a bold design, glass bricks make a stunning impression.
Functional Furniture and Fixtures
Brick Benches and Seating Areas
Bricks create an outdoor seating area for relaxation or entertaining guests. You can even blend them into your garden using the same bricks as existing brick pathways or raised garden beds. If you're struggling to find matching materials, some brick suppliers in Australia offer brick-matching services to help you.
While brick surfaces are hard, you can make the seating area more comfortable by adding cushions or incorporating the benches with wooden or metal seating.
Creative Room Dividers
Room dividers are excellent for separating larger rooms into smaller sections without building an entire wall. To make your room divider unique, consider using bricks. Fortunately, the material comes in different textures and finishes, so you can select one that blends well with your interior.
Some Australian brick manufacturers have a virtual design tool on their website that guides you in choosing the perfect material for your home. Thus, it ensures you'll have the perfect colour and texture that matches your aesthetic.
Choose Austral Bricks for Beautiful and Everlasting Bricks
Bricks are used for more than wall construction. In fact, there are creative ways to use bricks as functional or decorative pieces to accentuate your home. You can even utilise them to create unique fire pits or some practical items like outdoor benches or planters.
To ensure you get high-quality bricks, make sure to get them from reputable brick suppliers in Australia, like Austral Bricks. We understand that home building is a lifetime experience and we strive to make it a positive one. Also, we believe a home built with Austral Bricks is a place to live, love, and be you. Termite and Pest Control in Brisbane
Tumblr media
The best way to protect your home from termite attack is with a Termite Management System which comprises a combination of a Termite Baiting and Monitoring System or a Termiticide Chemical Treatment Zone. Ideally, a complete Management System should be installed at the time of new construction.
Safeguard one of your biggest investments from this destructive pest by engaging a fully Qualified and Licensed Pest Control Brisbane expert. To know more about Termite and Pest Control Brisbane, visit the Bug Out Pest Solutions website or call 0426263320.
Termites are one of Australia’s most destructive pests. They chew through timber flooring, timber framing and structural beams causing costly damage to your home and property. Termite inspections can save you thousands in repair costs by identifying termites early.
A full termite inspection is a detailed visual inspection of your house as per Australian Standards. This includes accessing roof cavities, checking the sub-floor and foundation areas for evidence of active termites or previous termite activity. We also check skirting boards, doors, windows and frame work for damage. The inspection will note present conditions that encourage termite attack such as high moisture content in walls, construction faults, garden beds raised too high and structural timber in contact with soil.
A full and thorough termite inspection will take between 1.5 and 2.5 hours for a standard home. It’s a small investment to ensure your family’s safety and the protection of your home. A termite inspection is a must-have for any property owner.
Termites can be extremely destructive to homes in Brisbane. Often they are only discovered once it’s too late and extensive damage has already been done. Following a termite inspection a professional pest control company can provide solutions to protect your property from these wood-destroying pests.
A termite barrier system is the best option when it comes to preventing future attacks. This is a chemical barrier that is applied around the perimeter of your home and is injected into concrete foundations and soil. This chemical kills the termites that come into contact with it through direct injection or ingestion. The barrier can offer protection for up to ten years.
A termite baiting system is also an option. We use the Trelona Advance Termite Bait System which is not only effective in killing termites but is a smart monitoring and baiting system that can be used as a stand alone or with a physical barrier like Sentricon AlwaysActive.
Protecting your property from termites is one of the most important things you can do as a homeowner. Termite barriers are an effective way to do this. Typically, they’re made of either a physical barrier (made from materials injected with termicide) or a chemical soil barrier.
In Queensland, it’s mandatory that all new homes have a physical or chemical termite barrier installed during construction. This prevents termites from getting to your home and causing serious damage.
If you’re thinking about having a termite barrier installed, it’s essential to choose the right company for the job. You want a company with experience and a solid reputation in the industry. They should also use high-quality materials and follow all the latest industry norms and rules.
Also, make sure they offer transparent pricing. Different companies will have different prices for their barriers, so it’s important to compare apples with apples. The best option is to choose a company that uses the proven protection product, Termidor.
Termite infestations cause more damage to Australian homes than storms, fires and floods combined. It’s a serious problem that can lead to costly repairs, and unfortunately, home insurance doesn’t cover this type of damage.
Regular termite inspections conducted by our local Brisbane team can help you minimise the damage and repair costs. Early detection, often through the observance of mud shelter tubes or cracking paint and wood debris around door frames and window architraves, can allow us to intercept the termites before they enter your home.
The best way to protect your home from termites is by installing our Sentricon Always Active Termite Monitoring and Baiting System. The system involves a series of plastic monitoring stations, loaded with a termite attractive element and slow-acting termiticide, placed every three metres around the external perimeter of your property. The station is inspected on a quarterly basis and, if live termites are found, the slow-acting bait is applied to commence colony eradication. Spruce Up Your Yard: 6 Amazing Ideas
Tumblr media
Because it's an extension of your living area, your backyard demands the same level of care and maintenance as the inside of your house. There are endless methods to turn your yard into a beautiful refuge, regardless of whether you have a large garden or a little urban space. In this post, we'll look at six incredible suggestions for reviving your outside area and creating a comfortable spot for entertainment and leisure. Lush Landscaping with Native Plants Increasing the amount of vegetation in your yard is a certain method to improve its aesthetic appeal. Consider using native plants in your landscaping rather than only importing species. These plants are a low-maintenance, environmentally beneficial option because they are adapted to your region's climate. Native plants draw in local wildlife, giving your surroundings a lovely touch of nature. To build a landscape that includes these species, research the local native flora and speak with a local horticulturist. This will ensure that your space looks good all year round. Mulch the plant beds as well to keep moisture in and weeds down to ensure your garden flourishes. The Magic of Outdoor Lighting Don't let the sun go down and have people overlook your outdoor area. Thanks to outdoor lighting, your yard may become a mesmerizing wonderland after dark. Consider other illumination alternatives besides the typical porch light, such as string lights, lanterns, or LED spotlights. Along with providing direction, pathway lighting enhances the magic of your landscape. A lighting system with programmable capabilities might be installed, enabling you to alter the mood with the push of a button. You may draw attention to the beauty of your yard's prominent features and create a captivating ambience for gatherings at night with well-positioned lighting. A New Fence for Privacy and Security Making sure that you and your family have a secure and private space in the backyard is one of the first stages in renovating it. Both of these goals may be accomplished by installing a new fence, and it will also improve the overall appearance of your outside space. A well-designed fence becomes even more important in Australia, where outdoor living is valued as a part of the culture. For the best results, consider hiring the best chain wire fencing contractors in Sydney, for instance. This type of fencing is a functional and long-lasting choice that can offer security without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. It preserves your privacy while providing a clear view of your surroundings. A Functional Outdoor Kitchen An outdoor kitchen is a great addition to the garden for individuals who enjoy cooking and socializing. It raises the bar for outdoor dining considerably. An external kitchen lets you cook and serve food without losing out on the festivities because it has a grill, countertops, a sink, and even a refrigerator. Imagine preparing delectable dishes in your patio kitchen while having a BBQ with guests. Thanks to the elegance and ease of an outdoor cooking area, your yard will become the preferred location for meetings and special occasions. Additionally, consider including a pergola or shade building to make the cook and guests comfortable in various climates. Create an Outdoor Fireplace Retreat Picture yourself relaxing by a roaring fire on a chilly evening while taking in the beauty of your garden area. This fantasy can come true with an outdoor fireplace. It acts as a focal point and gathering place for family and friends. Depending on your preferences, you can choose a conventional wood-burning fireplace or a contemporary gas fireplace. Consider adding cosy outdoor seats and a gorgeously planted space to create a compelling outdoor hideaway. This improvement is a flexible investment because it adds warmth and extends the time you may use your yard in the winter. A Relaxing Water Feature Your outdoor environment might feel quieter with the calming sound of flowing water. A water feature may be an eye-catching focal point in your yard, whether a flowing waterfall, a serene pond, or a straightforward bubbling fountain. It fosters a peaceful environment and draws local animals like birds and butterflies. Your yard can become a private getaway from the bustle of daily life when surrounded by the sight and sound of water. Include cosy seats close by to really appreciate your water feature's therapeutic qualities. Your water feature can even be enhanced by adding colourful fish and aquatic plants. Your backyard is a blank canvas ready to be painted into an exquisite outdoor haven. You can build an area that not only increases the value of your home but also serves as a haven for entertainment and leisure all year long if you adapt these ideas to your tastes and financial constraints. Hannah shares some tips on how she gets the best results from the heavy clay soil at her home.
There’s an old saying that clay soils can break your back, but sandy soils can break your heart. Few of us are lucky enough to have the perfect loam soils, but all soil types have their pros and cons.
Add compost - this can help improve any soil. It helps sandy soils retain water and nutrients and improves the drainage of clay soils. When Hannah started her garden, they removed all the topsoil, shaped the hillsides, then replaced the topsoil, mixed with compost and aged manure.
Use raised beds - these create better drainage and soil depth, allowing you to grow a wider range of vegies. Hannah’s range is between 20cm-40cm.
Choose plants that suit your soil - Brassicas normally do well in clay and kale and broccoli are two of Hannah’s family’s favourites, so they grow a lot of these. Top-heavy plants like corn, cabbage and Brussels sprouts benefit from the firm anchorage their roots can get in clay, and moisture-loving plants like lettuce, celery, and leafy greens benefit from clay’s ability to hold water. Peas and beans do well too, as do smaller root crops such as radish and small beetroot.
Keep an eye on changes - soils change over time, become compacted, get overwatered, or lose nutrients and general condition. Hannah prepared two beds the same way, but one is pumping out great-looking crops while the other’s harvest looks sick; Hannah will pull out the poor-looking veg, give the soil a bit of a boost, and start again.
How to improve clay soil - a great start is to add gypsum - this causes a chemical reaction that helps bind the small particles of clay together, forming larger particles that allow water and air to move around more easily. Hannah then adds canola meal and compost to feed the soil.
Will potatoes break up clay? This is a common belief and Hannah has experimented with this over the years, but her best results come from planting spuds into a prepared no-dig bed. You can also lay the potatoes at soil level and gradually build up layers of compost, mulch and manure on top. She believes it’s the extra organic matter that improves the soil, not the potatoes!
Recruit some worms - another way to improve your clay soil is to build a worm tower in your soil. All you need is an old bucket - Hannah uses a 20L food container. Drill some holes in the sides and base (for the worms to get in and out) and bury it into the garden bed. Add some food scraps and worms and cover it with some mulch to keep the worms cool and moist, plus a rain lid on top; Hannah uses and upturned washing up bowl. The worms will eat the scraps, create aerating burrows as they move around, and enrich the soil with their castings.
By getting to know your soil and playing to its strengths, you’ll get the best out of your garden.

Each lesson culminates in an assignment which is submitted to the school, marked by the school's tutors and returned to you with any relevant suggestions, comments, and if necessary, extra reading. Aims - Describe the system for naming plants, list the components of flowers, and gather materials - Explain the cultural practises that can be used to grow orchids. - Explain the methods for orchid propagation. - Describe the procedures for tissue culture propagation. - Provide an outline of orchid-friendly protected plant producing facilities. - Describe how a greenhouse is managed on a daily basis. - controlling diseases and pests in an orchid flower crop - Describe how to manage an orchid business and how to harvest and process an orchid crop. - Describe the marketing strategies used for orchids used as cut flowers. - Name a significant orchid group. Where Are Orchids Grown? Both epiphytic (also known as lithophytes) and terrestrial (also known as geophytic) orchids are the main focus of growing media for orchids. Epiphytic orchids are those that grow on living, dead, and tree fern trunks. Rock outcrops are the natural habitat for lithophytes. Orchids that grow on the ground are referred to as terrestrial orchids, albeit some of these orchids really grow in leaf litter rather than the mineral soil below. With soilless mixes, some terrestrial orchids will also grow pretty easily. Several of the orchids that are raised for cut blooms are lithophytic. They are typically cultivated in pots filled with a mix of rocks and bark. The same cultural methods used for epiphytic orchids will work for many lithophytic orchids. In general, composted bush debris, peat moss, medium- to coarse-grade sand, and modest amounts of soil (often only 15-20% of mix) can be used to cultivate the majority of terrestrial orchids. Reduce the sand component if the soil you're utilising is particularly sandy. Sand should make up roughly 50% of the mixture overall. The mix should have adequate aeration, and should almost completely dry out before watering. Sometimes substances like perlite, charcoal, and fine gravel are used to help with drainage. Orchids that grow epiphytically can be grown on wood slabs, cork, or bark. Many epiphytic orchids can be grown effectively in pots as well. Pots made of unglazed terracotta and plastic are both often used. Unglazed clay pots are particularly well suited to orchids that need adequate drainage because they are quite porous; nevertheless, they are also pricey and can be difficult to lift.   WHAT CAN YOU ACHIEVE FROM THIS COURSE?   If orchid cultivation is already your passion, you might wish to expand on it by opening a business. Even if you already have experience in the field, you might need to take a course or acquire new information. This course will assist you in achieving your objectives in the orchid growing sector with the assistance of our skilled instructors.   Read the full article

10 Fruits And Vegetables Best Planted During Autumn
Tumblr media
Autumn is the perfect time to plant fruits and vegetables with the help of a tree lopping Sydney expert. During this season, the air temperature is just right and the soil is saturated with moisture, making it a great environment for producing nutritious produce. While not all fruits and vegetables are suitable for planting during autumn, some thrive in these conditions and can provide a bountiful harvest come springtime.
Fruits and vegetables grown during the autumn season in Sydney can offer an abundance of flavour and nutrition to the home gardener. From apples and pears to spinach and kale, many fruits and veggies flourish when planted during this time of year.
To help you make the most of your autumn gardening efforts, here is a list of fruits and vegetables best planted during this season in Sydney.
Apples
An excellent choice for those looking to get their hands on tasty fruit from their garden, apples require minimal maintenance and can often be harvested throughout the year depending on what variety you choose. Apples are rich in vitamins A, C and K as well as fibre which helps promote digestive health.
Tomatoes
An easy-to-grow staple, tomatoes can be planted in small pots or raised beds and placed near sunny windowsills or patios where they’ll receive plenty of sunlight throughout the day. Tomatoes are nutritional powerhouses full of lycopene which has antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol levels and even protect against certain types of cancer.
Broccoli
Broccoli is an excellent leafy green to grow during autumn in Sydney due to its resilience against colder temperatures; plus it’s packed with calcium, iron and vitamin C for optimal nutrition benefits! Plant broccoli seeds directly into your garden bed or container before covering them with soil to ensure successful germination.
Carrots
One of the most popular root vegetables around, carrots are best planted during autumn because they require cool weather for optimal growth but don’t stand up too well against warmer temperatures found later in spring/summer months. Carrots contain heaps of vitamins A, B6 and C as well as potassium which helps regulate blood pressure levels within our bodies.
Fennel
Also known as sweet aniseed or finocchio, fennel is a low-maintenance crop that requires little effort planted correctly during autumn months; plus it’s full of antioxidants such as quercetin which helps fight off harmful free radicals in our bodies! Fennel can be used raw or cooked within savoury dishes to bring out its unique flavour profile known for its slight licorice aftertaste.
Zucchini
A versatile summer squash variety native to Italy but now grown all over the world, zucchinis require consistent watering but other than that demand very little attention from growers; plus they contain essential minerals such as manganese which plays an important role within our metabolic systems helping break down proteins & carbohydrates within the food we consume!
Peas
Easy to grow either directly into your garden bed or within containers due to their short growing season & shallow root systems; peas make an excellent addition to any home vegetable garden providing a wealth of nutrients such as protein & dietary fibre which helps lower cholesterol levels & regulate blood sugar levels within our bodies!
Potatoes
Another classic winter staple grown all over Australia due to its hardiness against colder climates & easiness when it comes to cultivating them at home; potatoes offer a range of vitamins & minerals such as vitamin C & magnesium helping bolster immune systems while also keeping us fuller longer thanks to their high starch content!
Radishes
Radishes have been cultivated since ancient times due to their peppery flavour profile & ease when it comes to growing them at home even without too much expertise needed; radishes are packed with essential nutrients such as folate which helps promote healthy pregnancies among women while also boasting dietary fibre content helping keep digestion regular throughout winter months!

My father's house was a lowset timber home on a quiet street, close to the hustle and bustle of a main road and local stores. That's how most houses were in Brisbane, Australia; neatly tucked away in suburban silence, but not too far to walk to visit your local cafe and baker. When he and my stepmother Judith bought the home 9 years ago, the backyard was nothing more than a blank canvas of dried grass and promising square meterage. The far right corner of the yard had a faded 3 x3 concrete foundation laid, but the previous owners clearly never used it; it was as bare as the yard surrounding it. The yard itself was the perfect slow-burn project for creative boomers who bear a gusto for DIY and have cash to burn on woodchip and flora. Shortly after moving in, the dust had settled, and so began the slowburn project. First it was large riverbed stones trucked in to create a large perimeter, like a semi-circle cut in half (the neighbours fence being the 180 degree slice through the centre), and then the soil within was turned up and fertilized. Judith went to work planting all sorts of foliage, garnishing the garden bed with an old sundial and birdbath. She also planted an olive tree, a lemon tree, and an array of wattles. The bare concrete foundation was an eyesore, invitingly empty and full of promise too. Dad knew what to do with it. He set about drafting the "architectural design" for what he called "The Spirit House"; a soon-to-be ensemble of “borrowed” wood from abandoned construction sites and flaking doors embedded with stained glass. He'd seen a photograph of a similar construction in a copy of Better Homes and Garden years ago, and loyally kept the page bookmarked and tucked away neatly in his catalog of treasured magazines, patiently awaiting the time that he could piece together his own masterpiece. Amongst this catalog were magazines that covered Harley Davidsons, vintage Holden vehicles and tattoo parlour mags, all printed well before the mid 2000's. That was Dad in print. He was a dreamer, a rebellious aesthete; and very well organized.
Over the short timespan of just 6 and a half years, the Spirit House and surrounding foliage bloomed into existence. The Spirit House, despite it's eclectic assortment of materials, stood beautifully quaint with his stained glass doors and flaking white paint, exuding an air of history from many decades now gone. The grass was green, the olive tree standing over 9 feet tall (but stil not bearing any fruit). Judith had realised that the original garden bed surrounded by riverstones was a lot of work for her plants to survive. She turned her attention to three raised zincalume graden beds, placed neatly in a row in the opposite corner to the Spirit House. There, her green thumb and specially chosen soil and fertilizer could now reach full potential. Chillis, lemongrass, cucumbers and zucchini flourished thick and fast. Cherry tomatoes, basil and rosemary too. That's another great thing about Brisbane Australia; somehow the best of each season would bless this corner of the world; gardeners across the world would be envious of the cool winters of sixteen degree days with bright sunshine and blue skies, inviting strawberries and mandarins to bloom, while the summers topping just 30 degrees (most days) allowed for bright garden beds of flowers.
Naturally, I was the primary caregiver of the garden whenever Dad and Judith would go travelling. Their trips were frequently sporadic, but I didn’t mind. The garden was a pleasure to behold on quiet afternoons, and even better enjoyed from the verandah sharing a joint with my gal friend, Bella. She was British, (just like Judith) and also a green thumb.
“What’s that new one ?” Bella inquired through a puff of THC.
She was pointing at a long climbing shrub; the plant itself stood a metre tall and with purplish and white flowers. In fact, I’d never seen them up until two weeks back when Dad returned from another trip.
“I don’t know. Dad’s super excited about it though, he thinks it may be a new species.”
“Oooh! A botanical discovery right here on this verandah. Where did he get it from?”
“Hmm, yeah, don’t know Bell. He’s limited to working in Australia cause of COVID obviously. Far north probably.”
“No sneaking off to Dubai this time.”
“Haha! Not that I know of. Speaking of which, apparently they don’t get have COVID there, everything’s business as usual. So maybe he is sneaking off to Dubai.”
Bella grinned. “Can’t wait to sneak off to England the minute it’s open.”
“Innit Bell.”
“Innit Reese.”
We both looked back at the curious plant.
“It is a bit funky isn’t it.” I stated.
“Very funky,” Bella concurred as she stood and wandered closer to the pot the shrub was sprouting from. I stood too and took a closer look. “It looks hairy too ooh I bet you don’t wanna touch it, I think that’ll make you itch.” Bella was right; the plant was still young with bright green stems covered in thick, short hairs. It’s flowers were just sprouting, and so were the beginnings of what appeared to be seed pods. I lit up the Google search on my phone.
“Its a velvet bean?” I mused carefully, scanning the top responses to my hurried description in the search bar.
“Could be could be Reese. I am no botanist, but velvet beans are indeed climbing shrubbery with itchy powers.”
I chuckled. “Definitely no touching.”
A year later, we discovered it was not a velvet bean.
